Speaker 1 (00:19):
We approached the midway point to the fourth quarter. The
Cavaliers project a one oh five ninety nine league. The
Hexo Basketball Game headway, I don't another big Bucky big Man. Wow,
Donovan Victual surprising even himself. Five Freeze on the ninety
has thirty seven broadcasting live from Rocket Mortgage field House
(00:45):
on the sunny shores of beautiful Lake Erie Green right
Wing three, God Ain't Green? Oh my goodness, Danny Green
is red hot in downtown Cleveland. Hello, you tuned in
to Wine and Gold Radio. Surprise, surprise, surprise. No, you're
(01:11):
your host? Rafa is this moron number one? And Jogi
put more on number two on the phone you Hey, everybody,
and welcome to Wine and Gold Radio. Wine and Radio.
I am Hayden Groves, Robi Rodi Jogi and he is
(01:32):
Chris fiedor Rodi Pero rolled the yard Perdez burrito. That
was probably a little too much rolling. No, not all
the ards, I roll Likenandez is not no at the end,
or maybe there's a double art like Caro Hernandez. Yes, okay,
(01:55):
very good, uh, and welcome to Wine and Gold Radio,
Season three, episode something can't even remember from continuance cadence.
That's right. We fell off a little bit, but now
we're right back on it. Man, So not right. It's
not our fault, but we're not going to point fingers.
Regular season is over, Easter Sunday, Sunday, end of the
regular season. Crazy, didn't it fly by? My ninth season
(02:18):
with the Cavaliers coming to an end? That's crazy. I
can't believe it is. This is my twentieth season comes
to an end. Do you have a end of season tradition?
I do what is yours. At the end of every season,
I watch I kind of get myself all set up
with all my kind of treats and everything like that.
And I watched Days and Confused. How is that related
(02:40):
to because that's kind of the it's the end of
the school year. The movie is and then it's like an,
I never watched that movie. You never watched Days That Confused?
Oh rafa have you ever seen it? No? That was
our surprise, guest. I stop the moment, the moment we
cleanse the playoff spot. I stopped shaving my playoff beer,
(03:01):
your playoff beard. I didn't. When we clinched, I shaved myself.
So I'm going to grow the nice beard. Yeah, so
that's my tradition at the end of every season. But
it's coming to an end, and it flew by. I
think it flew by. And I have to be careful
because I am mistaken by the kind of people. And
then I was I remember less when we were in
the finals, I was, I was a victim of racism,
(03:21):
but like confused racism. But it betook me as an
Arab blaming me for the problems that wow, And I
didn't know what to say back. I just I just say,
I don't know what you're talking about. You're fresh back
from well not fresh back, but you joined us on
(03:41):
the road trip in Orlando from the final four? Yeah? Man,
which final four is that for you? How many? My six?
This was my sixth four because in the pandemic there
was none. So final four games were pretty good. Actually
one was good. You know what the final we were
so accustomed to, like the Buss beater and and the
(04:01):
march madnetto you know, it's like, but Connecticut they served
to win. The mean, they didn't dismantle every single opponent
in the tournament. What they did in Houston, they did
throughout the brackets, It wasn't something that they just came
up and just played well. For sure, they made everybody
look bad. Double digit wins and and a team that
(04:23):
was not ranked prior to the beginning of the tournament
of the of their season, and then they ended up
doing what they did, and then you know, Miami didn't
show up. I think Miami, out of the four teams,
Miami is the one that kind of the event. The
scenery kind of was a little big for them from
the beginning because they were shooting shoot like one point
(04:44):
seventeen to start the game, and then so they stayed
played five minutes and then they went five different stretches
during the game of at least three minutes without a bucket.
You can't win games like that. It was boring. I
hate to say it. I mean, I'm I got my
buzzard beater always great. Let me ask you, did you
(05:05):
get to meet Bill Walton again? It was Bill Walton, Yes,
you know, he was so funny and dreamed to meet him.
Robert terrey As who was here from Barcelona from later
he was from Spain. He was coming. He came for
Noche Latina for his second year and then he came
I invited him to join me for the Final four
and to join me in Orlando for the first game,
and he met he met Bill Walton, and Bill Walton,
(05:28):
you know, he's always been a little singular, a little
a little different than everybody. So but even before the pandemic,
he didn't like people shaking his hand, getting close to work,
even before the pandemic, like Fitz pump you and I'm
filthy too, so he probably you know I've been I've
been doing this for him with worst for one for
seven years, so I know how to greet Bill when
(05:51):
I see him, and he is the sweetest dude that
He always greased me by my first name and asked
me how's everything going. Obviously we had a lot to
talk about this I'm around because Luke is here, but
we talked about his boy and everything. But Robert asked
him for a picture and Bill goes, okay, but outside
because he caught him in the tunnel coming out into
the into the into the into the ball outside and
(06:14):
then he said, you walk first, like work in front
of me, like he didn't want him. He doesn't like
people getting because it's Bill Walton man. Everybody wants to
get close to him. Everybody wants to take pictures with him,
and he does takes the picture, but he likes like
the person who's taking a picture to be in front
of him as opposed to next to him. It's Bill Walton,
(06:36):
all right? Uh? And then also tomorrow, actually today, I'm
sorry today, you're going to do on Saturday, You're doing
Guardians Baseball. Yeah, Carlos Baerga, me and car he's in
the He's in He's in the Guardians Hall of Fame.
I believe I should know he should be. He is.
He's in the Guardians of him and we I actually
(06:57):
have worked a game with him before, but this is
the first time that the Guardians are actually starting the season.
Octavio did the opening day game. We're gonna yeah, We're
gonna split duties on the play by play. I don't
know how Carlos is gonna like that. You're switching from
one guy to another. So I'm doing I'm doing today's
and then I'm doing the two games of the of
the Yankee series starting Monday, and doing Monday and Wednesday
(07:21):
afternoon game one of close. It is gonna be seventy degrees?
Did you shoot? Everybody should come any sports radio dot
com is where you can listen to the Guardians and Espanio. Also,
you get your hands, you get your hands and everything. Man,
I'm you're in every podcast in Cleveland for starters. Wait,
but I have a question. Yeah, you guys are knowledgeable
on on on Cleveland sports and stuff. I am wondering
(07:42):
how many people have called games of all three major
sports include four if you include the Monster, because I
don't know Monsters of the I don't think anybody, because
Cleveland to me is my new home. Yeah, and you
know how much I love the city. You know how
much I love the people. And I was just thinking
about it yesterday. I'm like who. I wonder who, because
(08:04):
there's some great broadcasters here, right, I wonder how many
have done. I don't think anybody. I don't think any Indians, Calves,
I'm Musters. I wonder like I'm trying to think no,
because Nev Chandler wouldn't have done no, Jim Mueller. I'm
trying to think of any of the old guy old
Browns guys because that's kind of the odd one. Because
Joe Tate obviously did. The Cavaliers and Indians and you guys,
(08:25):
you weren't around, so just called me the voice. One
guy is young he used to be and you can't
quite appreciate this, but I'm sure our listeners can't. It
used to be Joe Tate and Bruce Strennan to an
Indians games together, right, and it was yeah, and it
was exactly how you would imagine it would be. Yeah. Yeah,
(08:46):
but again explosion and the team sucked. It was terrible.
So I mean it was just they had to be
entertaining and they were, so that was a good one.
But that's really cool. That's a cool accomplishment. And like
I tell you, man, and I'm not being like cheesy,
it's it's important that you do this because out there
there's a kid out there that I thought it's all about.
(09:07):
You know again, I listened to Joe take Grown Up
and like it changes a little kids. So they're listening
and could say, hey man, this is what I aspire too.
It's cool. I think we're hoping that I can do
a world serious again. I don't know world serious before,
but that's who do a home team the way I
did the Cavs Finals would be just yeah, is it
going to really bump you out? When the Indians when
the Guardians kick the crap out of the Yankee No, man,
(09:27):
my whole loyaltyam You know, I always I was born
a Yankee fan. I'm not gonna lie that. I never
hide that, Okay, but my loyalties with the Guardians because
I'm part of them now, I'm part of the team.
You know, it doesn't matter. I mean, the Yankees have
cost me. You're not gonna be like a man, Okay,
not at all. And I'm just hoping that we are
(09:49):
able to lift the Rafa curse close to the lake
so that way we could cry. Hey Browns, if you're listening,
the curse of Rafa is a real thing. If if
if the last two years haven't taught you anything, then
you're sleeping at the switch man, because yeah, for sure, Hey,
let's talk some Calvs took the last took both games
in Orlando. I love these two game sets. I love
(10:11):
these two game sets. And you talked about our record
in these two game sets seven on one man, and
we talked about how it was going to be important
for them too. You know, in Miami they experienced the
first time of adjustment from one game to another. Unfortunately,
in the second game. We had some some some people
injured like Alan and DG were not were not part
(10:32):
of it, but they get they experienced a little bit.
Considering it was in Miami, it was probably like only
two quarters, like the second and tire with people in
the stand because people get it really late and leave
the really But you know, in Charlotte they took care
of business, care business. In Brooklyn they really took care
of business. It was like a playoff atmosphere because there
was still a lot in play. Maybe the nets were
(10:52):
like right behind our tails, you know, trying to get
to the fourth spot. So I think seven on one
record it speaks a lot of things for the coaching staff,
for the guys, and and and just to take care
of business. To me, the biggest lesson is when the
first one agreed and then you're playing, you're playing with
house money agreed, and you know the pressure is on
(11:13):
the other side. The same thing coming in here we got.
They fought so hard for home field advantage, right, they
play so well at home. We only one we're the
only one of the top sixteen with a losing record
on the road. So that's something that changed at the
end because we did we did much better seven in
the last nine. And yeah, we did much better on
the road, right, And I think that have to do
with the mindset going into the end of the season
(11:34):
and you know, time big time because you're going in
the medicine regard to me. And then you know, we
talked about our guys getting their feet wet, like putting
the toes in the water. I mean, there's no bigger
pool to get man. Stage lighting. Let's not talk about
anything that goes on and on the stands and in
the broadcast booth, but like in the state, in the
on the court. Yeah, the stage lighting, the crowd. I
(11:57):
love stage light. That's the one thing I wish we
would do that is amazing to and that I mean,
they're going into the lions. Then in terms of feeling
what everybody's talking about the playoff feel, yeah, no, it's
gonna be uh, they're gonna be you know, jumping right
into it. Um. So you know, hey, let's let's see
how they do. I wonder if I should bring cheese
(12:17):
to put on the mouse trap in my broadcast booth
in that's right, you get your invested. But by the way,
me being a New Yorker, the size of the mouse
trap they put in that. New York City rats probably
use it as a bench bar, right, they're probably using that.
They're using it as a trap or something. They're using
baits friends on it. Madison Square Garden. I'm I'm not
(12:39):
gonna lie. It's a pain in the ass. It just
is for everybody they and I think they like it
that way. I think this year it ended. It entered
the Rougher list of me requesting the right. I'm telling
the owner of pushing the bottom when they like implode
it because it's just bad. This run bad. They treat
me bad, treat everybody bad. I have to. I have
to swallow a lot there because I can't get in trouble.
(13:03):
Yeah right, yeah, so, and you gotta watch it because
you know the owner. Man, he'll kick people out of
the arena. He'll do the faceward, do the face recognition.
I used a word for him. He'll do the face.
You're on the street street. That's why when we go there,
you're just gonna feed even sweeter. Oh, I can't care
a business. I cannot wait. I really can't wait. Playoffs, baby,
I just can't wait. Hey, let's bring in our special guest.
(13:24):
Let's bring him in. He's sitting there, He's waiting with
bated breath. He's like, what the hell are these guys
talking about? Man, they're gonna open my micro wi let's
do it. Bring in the Golden boyd muchacha. What do
you got for us today? Um? So I have to say.
You know, you said you just shave. You're not gonna shave.
I can't really grow anything facial hair wise. You just
(13:47):
decided I'm just gonna I mean, I've been growing my
hair off for a little while. I'm not gonna cut
it until we're done playing basketball. Good might cut it
to a moment after. That's cool. Man. Yeah, I'm not
a fan of the mullet. Yeah, why not? Manun Like
I said, because I'm you're we're both from the eighties.
(14:07):
It was dumb in the eighties and it's dumb now. Yeah,
but I don't. I don't like. It's bad enough that
a mustache you see back that the mustache came back.
But what do you say about mustache? I've never dressed
a white man with a mustache or a black man
with that one. Again, it's not my rule. Where do
I go? I heard, what are I going that you're
good man, you got a beard. So and again Hispanic dudes.
(14:29):
Yeah between there, just like yeah, you're you're fine, Okay,
you're fine rafto. Yeah yeah, So you're gonna have playoff hair.
That's gonna be your bit. I mean, it's just you know,
it's just it's kind of cool. I'm on the hair
I've had, you know, see, I'm all far request and
you know what if you want to go with the mullet,
like just for a few days day t yeah, because
I that we haven't such cool hair. It would be
(14:50):
a shame for you to wear a mullet. It would
be I mean, it would be in a front to
a person like shave on the size. It's like going
a little the shorter on the it's it's the safe
business in the front, part in the back, business in
the front, party in the back. So it's a little
shorter on the side, shorter you know up top. And
then yeah, just kind of I don't know, no, you
killed I like that saying yeah, I like that saying
(15:12):
better than I like the mullet. Yeah, so so say
maybe it's just like you know, I take a vacation.
It's just vacation hair type of thing over the summer
and then when I come back, Yeah, I say, you know,
back to back to grow for a little bit. Yea,
like when I shaved my beard, I always shave it
into a mustache for a day, just the food. Yeah,
just to see what a jerk I looked like, you know,
So then you leave it all the way like roly fingers. Yeah,
(15:33):
I do like do like a food manchoo or yeah.
So all right, what you what do you got? Man um?
So we gotta talk about the masters right like it's
one of the most speaking of mullet. The the the
amateur player Bennett, who's in second place starting the turn around,
he got a one. He's playing with he's got a mullet. Yeah,
I'm rooting against him. He's playing with the leaders today.
(15:54):
He had three. Soon they're doing at the end because
of the rain. They had a rain, they had a
rain delay, and they finished the second round on Saturday,
so they might have to imagine that he's gonna he
started playing with with Homer and Scheffler the first two
rounds and now he's gonna go with Ram and Kepca.
That's pretty big, big, big time. So this is what's
going on and the Masters right now, you know, the
(16:15):
Arabs started this new golfee leave, right, so they took
some of them. Some of the big shot like pil
Michelson came, I know, the mullet guy, Cam Cameron David
who won a tournament last year when the Open he
was open. So now it's kind of like something that
(16:37):
I guess nowadays people love like evil and good. Now
it depends on which side you're on. It's like, oh
my god, I leave guy he's winning the Masters, which
I'm pity shure they're gonna use to promote the league
and KEPCA wins the Masters and then you know, because
they don't they're not allowed to play on the regular
PA event. They only they only played the Grand Slams,
(16:57):
so the Majors. So if they what it is, they're
only las are only allowed to play the Major because
they're the ones that are qualified for it. And the
only way you qualify now for them is winning the tournament.
And they don't want to play any regular ones because
that's different. Right, Yeah, they don't let them play because
they left. They left the PG Why did they let
him in the Majors? Then, well, they just say, hey,
because the majors are not run by the PGA. Everybody
(17:20):
runs their own thing. See I'm learning something, So they'd
be interested to see that angle, you know, I want
to you know, if Kepka wins, everybody's like, oh my god,
leave this this. You know. I'm sure kept a live guy. Yeah,
and he has done really well in the majors all
his career. He's gonna he's gonna be his fifth major.
So if he wins, what are the implications that means
(17:42):
that he's qualified to play the majors for the next
three years? Probably I don't know what the exemption rules are.
But also because they you know, and that would really
like Jeff Rod I'm pretty should live. He's gonna use
it as say we got the best golfer because you know,
when you win a major, you you you're playing against
the best Yeah yeah, golfers in the world. Yeah right,
(18:02):
So I don't know, I'd be interesting to see what happened.
But we've ever been in the Masters? What have you
ever been to the Masters? No? I'm actually got trying
to snooze snique my way in there to do it
because Westwood one who does the basketball, Piven and four.
Kevin Coogler, who is the voice in English, goes to
Augusta after that to do the to do the Masters
(18:25):
on the radio, and so I've been trying to convince
him to do them in Spanish. That would be like
for me, there's two things that I really would like
to rest man, which is the Masters and the Stanley
Cup finals. Those are two things that I like, I
really really would like to throw in there. It's gonna
happen for you. The Masters one day, You're gonna one day.
I'll make sure I'll going through the media entrances, get
(18:48):
like a media path, get a media path. Okay, well
that kind of answered my like my question because Masters,
you know, of course started this week. Like it just
kind of came up in conversation a couple of days ago.
Like if there's a sporting event that you have not
been to that you want to go to, what is it? Um,
you know, I would love to be to do Wimbledon.
(19:10):
Just I don't know if it has anything to do
with me, but most of the sporting events I haven't
been to, the stiff ones, the Master's Wimbledon, you know,
like in women and you can players only were white
when they play. Yeah, like so but women would be
cool to you know, to go to the to the
to the All England Club, the Masters and it's like
(19:30):
I'm a I'm a golfriend. So I would love to
walk those holow grand How about you me? I would
I would always on my bucket list. I'd like to
go one year tour all SEC football games. Really yeah,
Bama LSU and like Florida LSU that I would like to.
I've been through the swamp. I would like to do that.
(19:51):
And I would like to see a big football soccer
and what am I supposed to say here? Soccer soccer?
I would like see big soccer. Okay, so I'd like
to go would a big soccer game, and like, but
I want to get India and would do the World
Cup when it comes here. And I want but I
want hooligans. I don't want I want misbehavior. That's what
I do. I do know what, you know what I
would like to Damn, I forgot. I just thought about
(20:13):
the event that I really think, why don't I want hooligans?
Why don't I want man? You you? I want to
get like a real experience. World Cup is yeah, but toity.
I don't want to. I want to, like you want
to get the experience on the fans, man, I want
minute fans singing for ninety minutes. You know. The Olympics
would be great, like like a one hundred meters that, Yeah,
(20:34):
that would be like that'd be cool. Have you ever
got to No, I've never done that. I would do
any sport. I would do any sporty they if they,
if they, if they invited me to do that. Okay,
but I and trees fell at the Masters. I know
that too. I saw that. Oh yeah, right, I'm seventeen. Man.
I wish I had been there, you know. Yeah, I
put my hand, oh my god, right hand now to
(20:55):
get get a check from my ghost. You'd be a
one armed billie, are you know? Walk out of like
next I was watching a report. You know, the concessions
are really cheap at a ghosta National, which is for
a buck fifty. Yeah, the beer is at buck twenty five. Yeah,
they kept the prices down, Like, hey, you can buy
(21:16):
like five sandwiches, a beer, and an ice cream sandwich
for like twenty bucks. Why takes one of the first
paychecks to get into the Masters, And yeah, that's what
they understand that. But I mean it's like, is it
like that's like their tradition that we're never gonna raise
they their concessions are really cheap. So that's pretty cool. Yeah,
I thought it was cool. All right, Okay, what else
you got, Michael? Um, you know, we talked about the Guards.
(21:39):
You know, of course home opener was Friday. I think
it's the third straight home opener they've lost the Guards.
Um is uh is calling baseball fun? Yeah? You enjoy
calling baseball? Baseball it's my favorite support. Yeah, it's it's
always I don't know, it's always uh, you know, like
being a journalist and journalism major and all that kind
of thing, Like it's it's you know, I think it's
(22:00):
always kind of fun to think about the differences in
like calling different sports. In baseball is just constant talking
and story. Well, I'm not toally excited about it because
you know, now with the pitch clock, it changes completely
how you call the game because there's not that much time.
It's fifteen seconds in between pitches. I love it, so
there's not much time to love it to go around.
(22:22):
So that's something I'm gonna experience today for the first time.
Just to see how that works. But I'm not one
of those that believed in shortening the game is gonna
get more fun more fans. But hey, if i'm home
earlier than I'm all for that. I think it's great.
But you know, I can't wait to hear from players
like by Erga and some of the players how does
(22:44):
that affect their game? Because I was watching yesterday the
game and I and I and the first thought I
had was, Man, this pitch working, This pitch is working
really fast. I can't believe they're stepping out like taking
over rythm. And then I realized it's like it's the
pitch clock. Yeah, the second, then the second they outs
made on a roller for example, the clock start again,
(23:04):
and the picture the batter has to be in before
I think the catcher has to be down before twelve.
They heat have to be facing the picture before eight seconds,
and then the picture has to the only two throws
to first base. That's interesting, I think. I think that's
I think the pitch clocks that affects a little bit.
That affects a little bit. But what I don't understand
is if a picture could have I don't know what
(23:25):
they call it disengagements or disembarkments. Like if a pitcher
can have two of those per at bat, why doesn't
a batter get two times per ape bat? Batter only
gets one. Yeah, I think that's kind because I think
the batteries are the one that had made this game longer.
Like I remember no, No would take a pitch step
(23:47):
off after every pitch, right, all that stuff right, like
bad he like, dude, you haven't done anything. Step Yeah.
And that's the reason why they did it, because some
of the heaters just leave the batter box for no reason. Yeah.
I mean, but you know you make hard Grove called
the human raindow human raindo Yeah, because it takes along
in the box when they when they change the when
(24:09):
they changed the rule, they put videos of like some
of the longest a bad before new and there was
there was like there was an instance where a guy
put out two players while this dude took two pitches. Wow,
I just you know, just like I think in his glove. Yeah,
it's too much. It was like a whole f inning,
(24:30):
a whole half inning. Yeah, was done by the time
that one app bat was over, and he's like taking
time and like you know, so I agree with that
it's not perfect, and hopefully as the years going they'll
they'll tweak it. But I love that the game is
a little quicker. I hate it, like there's too much
jerking around. Yeah, And I think by the time we
get to the playoff, everybody should be used to the
(24:52):
cadence of the game. So if he happens in the playoffs,
like he didn't in the in the in the in
training camp where a game was decided because I dude
took too long and a picture or a catch it
took too long, so they gave an extra ball and
they walked him and the game was all or whatever
it was. I think it struck out then, like, if
he happened to you in the playoff, then you haven't
been around. Yeah, right, right, So I'm I'm okay with
(25:13):
the rules. I don't understand how bigger bags is gonna
help base stealers. Well, they don't gotta they don't gotta
go far to touch the base. Yeah, but it's not
like they put them and they can, you know, and
a head first dive, there's more to grab. Yeah, you
can get to the outside the back. I mean, I mean,
you you know, like baseball so quick. The difference between
(25:33):
the difference of two and a half inches or three
inches or whatever it is is. Yeah, it's called Ricky
Henderson's fault man. You know. In his record base stealing,
it's like one hundred and forty something. Last year he
stole more than like twenty sixteen. Yeah in the major Yeah. Yeah,
greatest leadoff man of all time. I think, I think steel,
(25:55):
I think like steals and the throw down and all that.
There's one of the best players baseball. It's awesome. The
only time where they appraise you for stealing man in baseball?
What else you got, golden boy? Um, that's about it.
All right, that's good. Are you excited for the Knicks series?
I am. I'm really I'm really excited. And I mean this,
you know this like this is my first I don't
count last year, like the NBA doesn't even count playing stats. Yeah, yeah,
(26:18):
especially for US. It was what do they put those
in the ABYSS? They don't count as regular season, they
don't kind of playoffs. That's crazy, man. Yeah, they're almost throwaways.
I mean they yeah, and now after they're after the
regular season eighty two games, that should be they conform
the Eastern Conference is the only one that is all set. Yeah, right,
Toronto hosting Chicago for nine and ten, and Miami is
(26:40):
hosting Atlanta in atlantaftery going to the conference final. It's
like in the playing again. Yeah yeah, and then you
know the Nets against the Sixers, no Ben Simmons, they
shut down. And then US against the Knicks. Yeah, I
think the most compelling match by the first round in
the East is US. I'm not just saying that, all right,
we are the most I mean that Kev's Knicks is
(27:02):
the best one. Yeah. Yeah, Because I'm telling you man
Celtics and Box waiting for maybe maybe somebody against Miami.
It's a little bad, that's fine. But I mean right now,
I think that we have the storylines. But I think
about the team to Chicago, they haven't really had like
season through right home about right there, Like I said,
in the East, there's nothing else really that I'm looking
(27:23):
at the first round that how about the Westmount Dallas
is out officially now and Dallas do you see how
see do you see that tweet? Because they still had
a chance to make it to the plane, but apparently
they have a top ten protecting exactly that they owe
to the Knicks because of the Porcingas deal, and by
(27:44):
not making the playoff, they get to keep that pick exactly.
And if I'm Dallas, that makes total sense for me
because you're building, You're building now. I don't think you're
not You're not going to resign Kyrie, I don't think so.
I can't see they're going nine and I just can't
see it. They better have for Luca because like I
got to hit on this pick. Like I tell my
(28:04):
buddies in Dallas, I've seen this movie before. You know
we got a superstar that's taking a shut off. Yeah, right,
you know what you want to the Luca Peel that
manag Jersey. I truly, I truly think though, I truly
think our series against Nick is probably the best, maybe
most compelling first round series. Whoever gets Houston in the
(28:25):
West will be interesting too, But Golden State in the
between Golden State and two LA teams, I think that
I think the Kings came between Kings Warrior. Whever we
get the Warriors is gonna be a good series. M Yeah,
And I'm excited for the Kings Tamma because in those fans,
he might be he might be Mike Brown against the
Warriors in the first at all. I would I'll take it, man,
I love that. I would love that. So those guys
(28:45):
can't score, so they can't play. Yeah, so that's and
that's a you know again, I feel so I'm so
happy for Mike and I'm so happy for that franchise
because it's a cool franchise. It sucks that it's been
on who want MVP? It's gotta be embid really, Yeah,
why he's got a you know what I mean, embiid
or why does that? Why does he have to be embaid?
(29:05):
I don't know, because I just think he's earned it.
I mean, what about joking a triple double? He almost
averaged a triple double, but I mean to first place
in the West. I don't know, I really, I've been
surprised how the media has has campaigned for MBS to
win the tectunderstands when I'm going to get something new, Yeah,
I know, like I feel like it's like it's it's
(29:25):
his time and he and he will be another international player.
I mean, he is an unstoppable for us. Well, how
do you say whistle in Spanish? He gets that, I'm
not gonna go there man, but it was your MVP.
I think I gave it to the Joker and b
doesn't How many games does be played? I have no idea,
but I'm sure. I'm sure jokes play more. Yeah, that's
(29:49):
my that's my point. Yeah, And i know now it's
all analytics and I'm ignorant when it comes to that
in terms of like like that. I think they have
as many that's now that they're doing baseball sixty sixty
six games, I would say the Joker played what seventy?
I don't know. I'm surprised how media has campaigned that's it,
(30:11):
you know, I'll be honest that my answer was sixty eight.
But I don't think the last like two weeks Yoki
just played too much. Yeah. Yeah, but I'm too prised
how everybody has campaign like Perkins right, the media, it's
just like it because it is no longer like they
have pushes so much for him being to win. Yeah,
(30:33):
I guess so. So my answer was kind of lazy.
I just kind of answered like yes because he has
I think he's going to win. But I mean, you
could give it to Jannest, you could give it to him,
you could give it to and I don't think anybody
could argue if you gave it to any of the
three of them. Really, yeah, where either those three? Can
you managine there's gonna be another international player you're gonna
get in the MVP. Man, that's huge? All about it? Um? Hey,
(30:53):
let's let's take a quick break and then uh, and
then we'll be back with a special guest. Okay, right
back on Wine and Gold Radio, Whine and I'm Gold Radio. Hi,
this is JB. Bickerstaff And I would rather run sprints
all day and I never listened to Wine and Gold Radio.
(31:14):
There's more of this? Why are you laughing? Of course
I'm not laughing. Of course after this on Wine and
Gold Radio all day yesterday. He's a sho from He's
(31:37):
not as from the Hey, this is Jake from the
Shardon Polka Band. And here's a little polka for Wine
and Gold Radio, Gold Radio, Wine Lord Radio, Wine Radio,
(32:04):
Whining Gold Radio. Oh, here the Calves go again. So
let's talk to our favorite friends, Jake, Mike Rappa and
there's Joe Whine and Gold Radio, Wine and Gold Radio,
(32:29):
Winning Radio, Wine Radio, Wine and Gold Radio. Who now
(32:57):
back to Wine and Gold Radio, give me that ball? Hey, everybody,
welcome back to segment two of Wine and Goal Radio.
We had to play the polka because Rob has been
killing me about it all year long radio. It's really
kind of rough. We had. We got a bulka band
(33:17):
to do the song for us. You gotta play. Appreciate
that the guy did the polka, but it's anyway, the
guy did the polka. Let's welcome our special guest, Robin Lopez. Rollo.
Can I call you Rollo? What is it was? Roficuity? Okay, Rollo,
Welcome to Wine and Gold Radio. First time on wrapping
up the regular season tomorrow. How did it go? I mean,
(33:38):
did it seem like it flew by? To you? It
seemed like a pretty typical season. I wish I had
a more exciting I mean in pace wise, you know,
because everything typical is good after the twenty twenty season.
But yeah, how I like talk about the the Orlando
game on Friday night or Thursday and it actually, uh,
how much fun was that for for the guys? Just
kind of some guys that didn't get to play too much? Oh,
(34:01):
I mean that was a great game. Um, you know,
the team's always felt extremely together. There's always at a
high level of trust, and I think that's that's partially
responsible for guys who have been out there, you know,
on the bench, cheering for everybody playing spot minutes, being
very to step in, feeling comfortable when stepping in and
(34:23):
doing their job. Hey, you know, I got I'm gonna
have to do the questions that all the fans want
to know. But first of all, i gotta tell you
one of the biggest owners I've had in my twenty
five year broadcasting career, it's that I got to play
Rollo once a week for four weeks because I was
the Spanish version of Robin Lopez on the Red Challenge
(34:44):
reading challenge that we have with a partner, Cleveland Cliffs.
So you know, Robin was like, we were promoting reading
on two second and turgraders, and Robin was doing it
in English, obviously, and I got to be Rollo in Spanish. Man,
So that was kind of cool. I know you like reading,
and I'm pretty sure it was special to you to
help promote the love for reading in in our youth. Absolutely,
(35:04):
I mean, we gotta get that Rollo on the show.
He sounds far more interesting than I could ever be. Well, like,
I hate to say it, but like I saw you
walking around with a book on the road and you're reading.
Are you reading? Time about? Yeah? What are you reading?
You can't go home again? Yeah, okay, I've only read
I read elect the Cool at Acid Testing. Oh I'm right, Tom, No,
I'm not Tom Wolf. Thomas Wolf. Yeah. I think he
(35:27):
wrote like in the late twenties, early thirties and he
passing like thirty. Ok So yeah, no, no, no, you're
good Wolf. Yeah. Okay. See that's how old were you
when you discover you could that love for reading? How
did that be? How did that start for you? It
was always imparted in me? Kind of Um, we always
(35:51):
I guess there's some parental gifts and trades. There's kind
of snubbed a little bit. You either take them on
and you snubbed them. And my mom, my grandmother, they
always they always foster a love of reading, and they
always they were always avid readers themselves. There are some
of your favorite authors? Oh? Um, I love Great Morrison Okay,
(36:12):
he um does Colm books and uh novels. Um. And
then I also love Lewis Carroll um and then um,
have you ever in any Jonathan friends? And because I'm
trying to read it right now, and how's it going.
It's it's going, man, it's not. It's not an easy read, man.
(36:34):
I mean the books are thick, the paragraphs are thick.
And also as a writer, it's really intimidating because he's
just way up here and you know, you're writing five keys,
you know what I mean. So it's intimidating. But it's right,
and it's really cool that you're a reader. I think
that's that's just really cool. So you went to the
to the Guardians opening day Opening days for me tonight
(36:57):
because I'm doing I'm calling the game. But you you
you you Golden doodle Labra doodle or what what? What? What?
What breed are they? Golden doodle? Muppet? I know you
have too, Mimi. I'm Muppet became an instant favorite in Cleveland.
Now he's gotta be like the number one breed now
in Cleveland. And do you always take your dogs around?
(37:17):
Like that goes? I'm a dog lover as well, But
do you always take them around? I had to bring
up it, I felt because I was I was ducked
out of Mariners gear. Yeah, yeah, I couldn't go there.
I had to have something to kind of soften edge.
Where where does her because I always where the Mariners
live on the road. Where does your love of the
Mariners come from? Is it from? So? My brother played
for the University of Washington in nineteen ninety five and
(37:38):
we moved from California up to o'clar brown would be
Island until you five. Was one of the year they
went to the American League Championship and they killed the
Yankees and they lost to some team in the Midwest. Yeah, yeah,
I remember, but I got there. Everybody knows about Robin
and I'm Brooke right, and I actually I don't know
(37:58):
how many people have been able to call gain so
both Lopez brother because he Brooke was at the Nets
when I was the voice of the Brooklyn Nets. And
this season I forget. I think it was in LA
in the West Coast trip. I'm doing the game and
I see in front of me a guy that looked
very much like a Lopez right, and I thought it
was Brooke, you know, got a you know, short hair,
(38:19):
kind of a you know, nice California ten. And I'm like,
I'm looking at the schedule and I'm like, well, Milwaukee
doesn't play till tomorrow, so it's probably Brooke coming over
to see, you know, probably play here the night before.
But then we went somewhere else and then I see
him again, so I asked, I asked Roller up like,
because he looks just like you guys. Looked like he
could be the triplet. Is he the oldest one or
the youngest one? Brother? Yeah, he looked just like. He
(38:43):
looked just like Broke and Rollers. I thought it was like, man,
people would think it's like Brook over here hanging out.
So we have to talk a little. Cavaliers playoffs coming up.
You've been to the playoffs, six trips to the playoffs,
and you also played in New York. What's that atmosphere
gonna be like? And for young guys like this, are
they're gonna be ready for the mecca in the playoffs.
(39:05):
It's hard to say what the mecca in the playoffs
will be like because we gonna make the playoffs when
I was there, But I think these guys are ready,
no question. U. I enjoyed seeing everybody's reaction to making
the playoffs, notching fifty wins because it's been such a
journey for a lot of guys here. They've come a
long way in a few short years. So to see
that progress, that's that's something special. And then like this
(39:29):
group of I want to talk to you about this
group of big guys because every group of big guys
are kind of unique, obviously, and this group is a
unique group. You got Jared Evan, super quiet mambady, who's
kind of a character unto himself. And then there's you.
How would you characterize this year's group of Bigs's definitely
very special, definitely one of gotten unique. I think big
(39:51):
men they're kind of since they're forced to stand out
because they are so hard to miss, right, they don't
have a problem developing personalities like that. Yeah, I'll continue
with the with the fans question they always ask me,
and they always say, why do you always sit on
the floor that's from my back? Okay, okay, that's yeah,
just preventative, and it's always like Donovan always kind of
(40:13):
usually it's done and say, I'm very kinds of his elders.
And then the other question why and again I don't
know why they asked me like under one, under one
informing the fans, but you wear Dame Lillard's shoes and
I don't know if I overheard somebody to talk about
you said, you don't get them from Dame the shoes,
that you buy them on your own. Yeah, I mean,
(40:34):
I know, I know if I asked Dame to give
me a pair of shoes, he would no, no question,
you would help me out. But no, I just I
picked these up myself. I'm I'm not trying to trouble
everybody that's different. Georgie will definitely call me and say, hey,
send me five pairs. And then this year, like you know,
you've you've obviously developed a good reputation for beefing with
(40:56):
the mask Ats, but it seems like you've kind of
scaled back a little bit this year. Oh you know,
I think they finally learned their lesson. Yeah, if they
stepped to me, I have no problem handling them. And
it seems like at this point they finally got through
their furred, podded skulls that I'm not somebody to cross
because I saw at one point stuff who I know
you probably have a pretty good relationship with because you know,
you just played in Orlando. But I know he kind
(41:18):
of came over towards you and they he kind of
he was weary, what kind of mask. What do you
what is it? Stuff doesn't magic dragon? Yeah? Magic dragon? Yeah,
I like but he puts the things out of his
nose like that. That's kind of cool. And you guys,
you guys got to go to Disney World. Around a
group of guys. We went to Universal and then we
went to Disney World. Him in to Disney World as
(41:40):
I was a little kid. Did they still do all
this stuff like the and more? Yeah, the Magic Parade
and a last all that stuff. Yeah, we hit all
the highlights in each park. I think the guys had
a really good time. They were huge. J I didn't
have a pair of Mouse series. He was you, Ja
Howel and I think Skinny Delon right, um, Dean Dylan
(42:03):
Yeah yeah, and then Zay and Evan. Who's the biggest nerd?
The biggest nerd? That's hard, that's hard to say because
I think, um, there's a few guys who are nerds
are proud of it. I know Ja myself, I think
we'd probably be in the top two. Yeah. Now you
are a little older than these guys. You're not a
(42:24):
Pokemon guy, are you not so much? Yeah? Because I
feel so old man, and I definitely came. I was
in fifth or sixth grade when Pokemon crazy first hit
back in the late nineties. Um so I enjoy Pokemon,
but there are some players you're crazy about. I know Cole,
Anthony and Orlando. He's a huge Pokemon fan because I
(42:47):
know Ja is like and don't have a Twilight Zone
thing where he's a big Twide Zone. I love the
Howling Man. Which one is? Which is the one where
the the Covenant of Brothers of religious brothers have the
devil locked up in a cell? Oh yeah, I've never
(43:09):
seen it. I'm totally way over my head. Never seen
Twilight Zone. No, not the one with the gremlin and
the and the wing of the plane, none of that stuff.
I was probably learning English at that time when it
came out. It was way way with me. Oh man,
thank you so much for joining us. We really appreciate that.
Are you going You're not going to the Guardians game
again today with the dog? Are you? I don't know
(43:30):
if the dogs got but I'm gonna be okay, very
good Indian Spanish man. Well, we'll send you a shout out. Oh,
no question, Thank you man, Thank you for joining Thank
you so much. Thanks a lot. This is a Donovan
Mitchell and you're listening to Wine and Gold Radio. You
wouldn't expecting that. Worry. Yeah, there's more of this. Woe
(44:00):
mouse gotta you're your after this on Wine and Golden Radio.
Another Golden weekend. That's his shot. John. We ran a
(44:21):
lot of that for him last year. Tim John Tim,
John's your middle name, right, not that either. Out for
three ball. No, goodbye, Wannamaker Air. Come the cavaliers. Don't
worry camp he We'll be fine. No. Back to Wine
and Gold Radio. I'm a man, I'm forty. Okay, everybody,
(44:42):
Welcome back to Segment three Radio, Whine and Gold Radio
and our special guest. Our next special guest is gonna
help out awards award time. I know it's award time.
And I just before before you even introduce her, she
just told a story off the air about someone that
was old and they were in their forties. Ye, the
old lady not really old, all right, we are really old.
(45:03):
We are really really old. Forty she was forty, that's
what she said. That means you are like, oh my god,
senior citizen. It's kind of what happened to you at
the food bank the other day when they were talking
about your fellow seniors having having to weed more like
right a fellows, right yeah, and having yeah, I have
to gun my stuff. Now. Uh, we're joined in segment
(45:25):
three by Rookie of the Year. We can finally say
it now, yeah, Rookie of the Year, Devin Booker, the
real Deven Booker, Devin, welcome to play a gold radio Finally.
We didn't want to bring you on. We kind of
knew you were gonna win it about like maybe last show,
(45:45):
but we didn't want it. We wanted to make sure
you didn't blow it because you were going to Orlando
and we thought, well maybe you could. You know, you
made your first your second road trip of the year.
We didn't want you to. You know, we don't want
to jinx you. Detroit. That's not a road that's not
a road trip. You drove there yourself with Kelsey, one
of our writers. I've drove down there with her. Oh
that's kind of cool, Like it's still not a road
trip though this is a road How was it? It
(46:09):
was everything I expected it to be, Okay, I know,
like bj he told me, SI song was like how
many times? Like did you smile the whole time because
I know that like you your teeth was big and
your mouth was wide open, like you were excited, and
I was like, I know, he's like I can't wait
to like hear about how you react and ever see
the room and all of that. Like I guess him
(46:30):
and Strom had like a little deal going to see
how long it was going to take me to smile.
Not that long. I'm just a happy person. So it's cool,
isn't It was just amazing He picked a good one too.
That that was a good trip. Oh yes, I went
from staying smart in Houston to going through to the
Grand Lakes in Orlando. Yeah the st yeah smart at
(46:55):
the end. Yeah this, I mean Orlando was really cool.
We won both games. Sam Sam Coombs, he was leading
this rookie of the Year thing well everywhere and then no, no, no, no,
wait wait wait I have to file a complaint. No,
not a complaint, but what is it, like, like, what
is it that the MAVs file the other day? Protest?
(47:17):
I file a protest to the league on the podcast
department because Sam Coombe was not a rookie and he
would be. It's not his fault, it's not his fault.
But I just but he's a third year guy, and
there's no trophies for third year guys, not at all,
you know. But Devin Booker came in. She'd been strong
all year. She got she got Phoenix is fake. Devin
(47:38):
Booker to autograph of Jersey. That amazing. That's how cool
is that? When do you find out there was somebody
that had had your name and that was kind of famous.
I'm gonna be honest with you. It was like my
senior year, um of high school. So twenty seventeen, I graduated. Um,
that's what you in high school? Yeah you, yes, I did. Yeah,
(48:05):
thirty years, that's right. Graduate. But um, I know, like
me and all my friends when we all graduated, we said, like,
what we're gonna do for the rest of our lives? Um.
And one of my friends who is in NFL right now,
his name is Geno Stone, he said he wanted to
go to the NFL, and I said, well, you know,
I want to work for the NBA and I'm gonna
(48:26):
do it one day. And he was like, you're gonna
work in the NBA and there's someone there that's name
is Devin Booker. And I was like, what are you
talking about? So I did my research on it. I
was like, wait a minute, we have the same exact name.
It's kind of weird, but might have spelled differently. Um,
but your first name is spelled differently. So you're the
(48:46):
real thing, but I'm the real thing. That's what he Usually,
there's a few players that you that you able to
develop relationship when they're like Ja was one of the
guys that I knew very well before he came here.
When he was when he was because it's Ja. He's
like always smiling, and so I don't know Devan at all,
but I kind of think it's cool when when when
(49:07):
I heard he's signed he signed a jersey for you. Yeah, no,
that's what he. I kind of was just indifferent to
him before. When I when I saw that, I thought, yeah,
now he's all of a sudden kind of skyrockets because
that's when he goes crazy. A good thing exactly, he Devin.
Can you hold on one second, we have to pause
for legal ID. This is Wicked Rubia and you're listening
(49:28):
to Wine and Gold Radio, Cleveland, Ohio. I'm Medicana. Okay,
So how was your first season? Does tell us about
your first season because you're under the as you know,
the iron fist of BJ Evans he down. Yeah, we'll
discuss that. Thank you everything. Like, hey, I think of
like the current affair, remember when they have the GIF. Yeah,
(49:52):
because he doesn't. I don't mean it as a negative,
but BJ, he runs a tight ship. He runs the
It's the tightest ship in the company. It's like the
computer team. Computer team is all over the place. Man,
You're exactly get to do whatever he wants. But it's
like BJ runs all Okay, See that's that's what I mean. Nobody,
nobody knows what you do. Man. It's like the PR
(50:15):
team is run with precision by BJ. And that's why
you guys are all so good. So how was your
first season as a communications assistant? That's what I am
right now. Um, Honestly, I if you would have told
me in high school like this is what I would
be doing, I'd probably laugh in your face. Yeah. Um.
But now that I had the opportunity and shout out
(50:36):
to BJ, because he's the one that basically gave me
my shot and that's all I needed. Um, I feel
at home here, like this is my family. Um. I
love working under BJ. And Sharom and Sam, Like they
are so hard on me because they want me to
be great and that's all they tell me all the time.
Um so to learn so much my rookie year and
(50:57):
then here we are my first year in the NBA. Yeah,
and we're going to the playoffs too, so like that's
like that's a dream from true as well. Enjoy it.
I'm trying. I am trying then, um, from the coaches
to the players, like everyone's just so nice. Players love you,
oh my gosh, swear and the feeling is so mutual.
Like I don't think I could have asked for a
(51:19):
better job. And I'm just so excited to be a
part of this organization and I can't wait to see
where it takes me. Hopefully I can be you know,
like the longest one here. I don't know. And now
you're at gradual University of Michigan, right, No, so I
graduated from the University of Akron goes it shout out
to Yeah, and I'm allowed to ask you this because
(51:43):
you're still young enough and they never to ask a woman.
But you're how old? Um So I'm twenty three, I
will be twenty four, twenty first, so far ahead of
the game exactly. Oh my god, exactly what were you
doing a construction? I was a road crow. I was
I don't even my twenty three that was like my head,
(52:03):
I was, I was nowhere near anything professional. Oh my god, Devin,
that's keep going. Hey, can you stick around for thank you? Yes?
I can. We have to thank you, know, we have
to thank the PR department again. We have to thank
b J who he does. He keeps everything straight by
(52:23):
running arn fist as you know. Cherome. You gotta love
working with Cherome because I left room. That's my mentor.
Oh you couldn't again picked a better mentor. He's he
is the best. He really is. The place will fall
apart without him. Jerome was given, was given Devin a
little a little roun because she was She said she
(52:44):
was gonna be down there like let's say three fifteen,
and she came down to like three sixteen, and Cherome
was like he was gonna It was the other way around. Yeah,
So I was like, why are you making Devin wait? Man? Okay, yeah,
all right, in the heat in the I was there. Yeah,
(53:08):
that's right, that's right. Yeah, that's because it is run
like clockwork. Man, the pier department. That's why I love
you guys, Slick and Sammy who I don't know. Maybe
we'll come up with some kind of trophy for him.
I guess, like a participation trophy. I guess just give it.
You know he's from me, So you can give him
a gift card for red lobster. I promise he will
(53:29):

(54:12):

the great Joe Fritchard, who I loved you, Joe frien
He's you're going to if you're gonna department. At some
point you're gonna have to make the call to Joe

to know Lucy Varis. Please tell me you know, Lucy,

road chief runs. She works with the with the Community Department,
Community Service Department, and she does hold the cops cares.
So she's the person to know. We call her the

the pickleball league here in Northeast Ohio. But he's the
only one that plays in the eighty plus division dominates
does dominate, and he's also without a walker, and he
(56:28):

my hotel room for a bid day this day? Did
