Speaker 2 (00:16):
Hello friends,
Welcome to the Champions Mojo
podcast.
I am your host, Kelly Pallas, and, as usual, I am with my
co-host, Maria Parker.
Hey Maria, hey Kelly, it'sgreat to be with you here today.
Yes, and Maria, this is aspecial edition of Champions
Mojo from the Pool Deck and wehave a great interview for you
(00:40):
today.
It's brief, it's short, butit's powerful.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
Yeah, interview for
you today.
It's brief, it's short, butit's powerful.
Yeah, I wasn't there, but I wasable to listen to the interview
and some great takeaways.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Yeah, we hope you'll
stick around and catch the
takeaways.
And here we go.
I'm on deck at the US MastersNationals with none other than
CG Young from the CG SportsCompany, and I'm going to give
you a quick introduction that CGis not only a great swimmer
himself, but he is a sportsagent, attorney and, I would say
(01:13):
, the agent for Olympic swimmers.
You rep Lilly King and KatieGrimes and you're just the man
to go to, but you are also andthis is the cool part you're
also a swimmer as well.
So you've just swam the 50breast.
You're just the man to go to,but you are also and this is the
cool part you're also a swimmer.
So you've just swimmed the 50breast.
You're out of breath.
How was that swim for you?
Speaker 4 (01:30):
The swim was pretty
good.
I swam the 100 yesterday.
That was fun.
Really hurt at the very end,but it just felt good to come
out and race.
So I was actually at the ParisOlympics a couple of weeks ago,
so that was good.
But I was out of the water forabout two weeks but it was
really fun just to come here andsee a lot of friends get some
racing in and I'm pretty happywith that.
(01:51):
50 breaths too, even though I'mstill breathing really hard.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
That's what the
on-deck is all about catching
you.
So one of the things that welove to do for Champions Mojo is
master swimmers have real lives.
So you're a master swimmer andyou obviously are a busy sports
agent just coming back from theOlympics.
I also know you've got apparelat the end of the lot going.
So how do you balance yourtraining to be as fast as you
are and also run such asuccessful business?
Speaker 4 (02:16):
Yeah, so right now
I'm swimming about three times a
week Monday, wednesday, fridaymornings typically between 2,500
or 3,000 at the most.
But I have a really fun group,a really great master's group,
and I coach it also, but I coachfrom the water, so that's a lot
of fun, it's reallyentertaining.
But I like swimming with peopleregardless of speed or ability.
(02:38):
It's just fun to have a group.
Otherwise I'm not going to bevery motivated if I do it by
myself.
I try to get in the weight roomwhen I can, but mostly it's
just swimming and just enjoyingwhat I'm doing and not worrying
too much about like practicetimes and stuff like that,
although I try to, but at theend of the day you got to
balance it and then when I'm notdoing that, I'm just, I'm just
(02:58):
working.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
I know you take
mental preparation very
seriously.
You have a lot of people thatyou represent that do a lot of
mental training.
What about that approach foryou?
Speaker 4 (03:10):
Yeah, I guess
mentally on the outside.
So I try not to take like meetsand stuff like this too
seriously and try to give myselfa little bit of grace.
I think that's important too inMasters.
It's not always about beingfaster than last year or
anything.
I think the fact that you'rehere and doing it and healthy is
the most important thing.
I was pretty motivated in He-1for the men's 50 press.
(03:32):
I think the average age was 89and a half years old and I think
that's a great goal that Iaspire to, more so than times or
first place or anything likethat.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
Yeah, has there been
any swam here so far?
That set itself apart for you.
Speaker 4 (03:48):
Don Hubbard swam the
hundred breaths yesterday and he
won or two at, I think, 89 or90 years old.
That really really stood out tome.
That was really great.
On the women's side, a friendof mine, jenna Campbell, who got
back into swimming throughtraining for triathlon, so this
is just part of her training.
She does running and biking, but she threw down a two double.
(04:12):
Oh no, a 202 flat long course,200 meter free as a master
swimmer, which is incredible.
And I asked her and she wasjust kind of like, yeah, I
swimming is a in as a third ofmy training.
It's not everything I do, butI'm much more relaxed and I'm
going very close to my best time.
So that was pretty motivatingas well.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
Yeah, yes, I actually
interviewed Jenna yesterday and
right after that, veryimpressive, incredible.
Speaker 1 (04:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:35):
So the last question
is there anything that I haven't
asked you that you might wantto share with our listeners?
Speaker 4 (04:40):
Yeah, one of the
things that I do for work is
it's really important for me asan agent to really get to know
my athletes, my clients, to knowtheir backstory, know what's
special about them, because alot of that is what I'm
presenting to companies on whythey align really well.
And a few years ago we found asecret weapon and it was if we
booked our clients and ourathletes on the Champions Mojo
(05:03):
podcast.
Kelly and Maria do such a goodjob of getting these athletes to
feel comfortable.
Many of them are introverted, but getting them to feel
comfortable and sharing theirstory sharing not just what they
do today but why they startedgetting into it, their family
hobbies, all sorts of stuff andwe've used that more than
probably any other piece ofmarketing to prepare not just
(05:25):
myself, but I have other agentsat the business now and it's
part of their required readingand homework if they're ever
going to represent one of ourathletes in the field.
So it's our secret to success.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
I love it.
You plug me, I plug you.
If you know an Olympic swimmeror an Olympic athlete out there,
they need to sign up and haveCG Young represent them with CG
Sports Company.
Thanks, cg, really appreciateyour time.
Speaker 4 (05:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (05:50):
Thanks so much for
cheering me on.
It's great to see you.
Stay tuned for the takeaways.
Want to succeed like a champion?
Five-time Olympic coach BobBowman, coach of Olympic legend
Michael Phelps, says Kelly'sbook Take your Mark Lead is a
powerful addition to yourpersonal improvement library,
and learners from all walks oflife will gain key insights and
enjoy this inspiring book.
(06:11):
Take your Mark Lead debuted asan Amazon number one bestseller
in five categories and isavailable online.
And now the takeaways.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
All right, cg Young,
a man that is near and dear to
our hearts.
And Maria, what was your?
Speaker 3 (06:29):
first takeaway oh,
he's great, but I love that he
said that he gives himself grace.
He's out there competing.
He doesn't have to do that, buthe's out there competing and he
says you know, I just come outhere, I have fun, I see people
and I don't always have toimprove.
I mean, I think if we do wantto improve, there's nothing
wrong with ambition to getbetter.
(06:50):
But sometimes you have to giveyourself grace and I love that
word Like, oh, I'm just going togo out there and do the best I
can and I'm not.
You know, you work your buttout and you really want to see
improvement.
But I love that he giveshimself grace.
Speaker 2 (07:06):
Yes, that's your word
, which you have taught me and
I've learned so much from youabout giving myself grace.
So glad to hear him reiteratethat.
My main takeaway is that he hasso much fun by training in a
group.
That's why he does it.
That's what it's all about.
He wouldn't show up if he wasdoing it alone and I agree so
much with that, and you know weencourage you if you're out
(07:28):
there training alone, find agroup.
There's probably a group youcould train with, even if it's
one other person.
So he is just having fun in agroup and that's really what
Master Swimming is about.
So loved, loved that interview, love CG and so glad we finally
got him on Champions.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
Mojo, he's great.
Speaker 2 (07:48):
Yeah, all right, love
you Maria, love you Bye.
