Speaker 1 (00:14):
Coming to you live from the Cross Country Mortgage Campus
in Barrie, Ohio. This is Cleveland Browns Daily on eight
fifty ESPN Cleveland, presented by bally Bet Sportsbook, an official
sports betting partner of your Cleveland Browns. Please bet responsibly.
Here are your hosts, Bo Bishop and Nathan Zegura.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
Right, let's do live on a game day Friday edition
of Cleveland Brown's Daily. I am merely bow down in Charlotte.
Is the great z Gibees in your room? You've been
there all week? How are you, buddy? You ready to
play some football tonight?
Speaker 3 (01:30):
Yes? Please, thank you. Let's go. Let's get to this game.
We've been here for a while. We got a brief
bit of action on Wednesday morning.
Speaker 4 (01:39):
Yeah, but that was it.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
And now here we are. We're ready to roll for
the preseason opener tonight. Obviously it is one of the
nay the most anticipated I think Cleveland Brown's preseason game
I can remember, although that is probably very much recency bias.
I think the first time we got to see Bake,
people were pretty excited about that. I think the first
time we got to see Johnny football people were very
(02:03):
excited about that. But that was, you know, in the
last five years, certainly, or at least in the last decade,
this would be, you know, top three preseason games that
people are excited to see. And so am I because
so much talk has been made about it, so much
quite frankly ignorant talk from the national perspective about this
game and what it means and what the Browns are
doing as it relates to Shadoor Sanders and now we're
(02:25):
just gonna go out and play football. Now we're just
gonna go out there. We're gonna play football, and we're
going to see how it goes. So I am excited
about that.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
We really don't have a comp for this. There's nothing
I was trying to think. I mean, because you're right
the other two instances you mentioned Baker's debut and you
thought about John Football's debut.
Speaker 4 (02:45):
I was there for Brady.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
Quinn's debut at the stadium, and that one had a
lot of juice of like wanting to see Brady go.
I'm sure Tim Couch. Look, anytime you have a quarterback
that you draft in the first round, there is juice
to seeing them in your uniform for the first time.
And that is something that is not unique. That's something
that everybody who drafts a first round quarterback. There is
(03:07):
that juice to see that quarterback. What makes this so
different are the circumstances that made this possible tonight with
a fifth round pick, which is what should do, or
is a fifth round pick basically getting the ball and go.
Speaker 4 (03:23):
I mean, we just I.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Couldn't think of another example of this of a fifth
round pick getting the ball like this, and then beyond that,
a fifth round pick who is on a short list
of one of the most famous college football players of
the last three or four years, and then this is
the debut, So like that part of it, I couldn't
think of a comparison for Buddy. I really couldn't. I
really racked my brain trying to. I couldn't pick up one.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
Let me take it a step further, because there isn't one.
You're right, but this game the get in and talking
to people in the ticket industry, this game it's bigger
than your average regular season game in Charlotte. It's got
a higher get in than lots of regular season games
(04:08):
in our home stadium. People. I think, not just loc
I think people are coming here to see this. I
think people around the country. Are are transfixed by this.
He is a draw. This would be he's a draw.
He's a draw because you're looking at prices right now
that for this Carolina Panthers game against the Cleveland Browns
in the preseason by somebody I know and trust very
(04:28):
well in the ticket industry and the ticket market, this
will be the biggest Carolina game since, like Bryce Young's debut.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
I'm just looking at lower Bowl right now, using ESPN
as an example. I just popped on to see what
it was like. You can't sit in the lower Bowl
for tonight for preseason game number one on the road
for the cheapest one in Here's one hundred and twelve
bucks and it's in the end zone and it's towards
the back. Anything near is fifteen fifty. For the most part,
(05:00):
people give those seats away the preseason games, like season
ticket members. That's what you do, You give your season ticket.
You know, you give your seats away to folks who
can't normally attend. And the idea that you'd have to
pay multiple hundred dollars to get into this game tonight
to sit in the lower Bowl is a stupefying thing.
And it speaks to just how unique this is. The
other thing with Baker and with Johnny, you drafted those
(05:22):
guys to be franchise saviors. Shardur Sanders was not drafted
to be a franchise savior. He was not drafted to
be a franchise quarterback. He's a lottery ticket. And that's
the way it has to be viewed. Also, the circumstances
like if Kenny Pickett were not nursing the hamstring, if
Dylan Gabriel were not nursing the hamstring, this script would
look totally different. Like all of the things that had
to happen for him to be just given the game
(05:45):
and he's earned it. He's done all the things right
for sure, but like there's also nowhere else to go
with it.
Speaker 4 (05:51):
All of the snaps are his snaps, right.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
I think if you had everybody up, it's maybe Kenny
Pickett starts or Dylan Gabriel starts this game and they
play a lot and Shador maybe plays the fourth quarter. Yeah,
but he's gonna get, you know, Kevin s Fan said
fifty plays or so last night on The Kevin Sefanski Show.
He's gonna get, you know, well into the second half,
and this is an incredible opportunity. And people say, oh,
(06:15):
he's being set up to fail. He's you know, he
didn't get any reps with the ones. How can he
put him out there? This is the preseason. He's not
playing with the ones. Our ones aren't playing and their
ones are playing for a series maybe two, He's gonna
be with the guys he's worked with, the twos and threes,
going against the twos and threes of the Carolina Panthers.
I mean, that's the reality of it. And you know,
(06:36):
you'll have some interest in that first or second offensive
series for as long as Carolina will keep its starters
out there. But the reality is he is going against
or with the guys he's practiced with, against the guys
that are at the equal footing of the Carolina Panthers.
So no, this is not he is not being set
up to fail. In fact, I know that he's being
set up. They're trying to have it be set up
(06:57):
for success. They would like to see this be very successful.
Why wouldn't they foreshad door standers. He's their quarterback. We
are in search of a quarterback, and yeah, we've documented
it well, like if you've listened to the show right now,
you know the quarterback deal, and if you have don't,
I'm sure we'll reiterate it ten more times over the
course of the next ten days. But you know he
(07:19):
had a big catchup to do. He has put that
work in. He is still the fourth quarterback on this team.
And if it weren't for the injuries and the fact
that Joe Flacco is an eighteen year veteran in his forties,
he wouldn't have this opportunity. This is a great opportunity
for George Sanders. Sure is man because the reality is
the game is played between the white lines, and the
(07:41):
game is played when it is a game. It's not
played in practice. Ask Allen Iverson. It's not played on whiteboards,
it's not played in meeting rooms. No, you want to
show that, listen. I may have a lot to learn
in some of those other areas about my process, about
what it takes to be an NFL quarterback, but all
the things you have to be able to do, snap,
just call in the plays, all of that. But when
(08:02):
I get out there, if I can handle that operation,
let my talent shine through. You know, this is a
guy that you would expect to make a lot of plays.
It's all we've seen him do every time he stepped
on a football field, whether it were at Jackson State
or at Colorado. So that that's what's the opportunity here.
And that's why I think it is going to be
interesting because two things. Number One, you don't see this
very often. And when's the last time the guy that
(08:24):
everybody wants to see got three quarters. Never in the
first preseason game.
Speaker 2 (08:30):
Never never, no, never, No, you haven't And you know
you're watching some of the action last night, like Jalen Milroe,
the third round pick out of Alabama, who a lot
of people link to us at one point.
Speaker 4 (08:39):
Remember at one point we're gonna have to.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
Trade up to get Jalen Milroe all the way to
number two.
Speaker 4 (08:45):
Yeah, what you're gonna have to take him at too.
You can't got to take him at too. May have
to take Milrod too.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
He ended up going in the third round of Seattle,
and he played the end of the game last night.
He went six to ten through for sixty yards, ran
for another thirty eight, but he played the end of
the game and Drew Locke played the majority of the
game last night, getting all that.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
And nobody's counting his reps. Nobody's saying, oh, what what
are is? What's he getting in practice? Oh there's they're not.
I think the problem the disconnect for so many people
is that coming out into the draft process, right when
we were at the Combine, for example, the only two
(09:25):
quarterbacks in this draft that were even remotely presented as
kind of franchise saviors were cam Ward and Shaudor Sanders. Now,
clearly the league for a variety of reasons, which we've
talked about quite extensively, but the league didn't feel that
way about Shador Sanders. It did about cam Ward. He
went number one overall. Jackson Dart ended up going what
(09:45):
late in the first round.
Speaker 4 (09:47):
Yeah, and we.
Speaker 3 (09:48):
Haven't heard anything about his reps. All we've seen is,
you know, Jameis Winston throwing the ball off the goalpost
and not having to do Walkers. But you haven't heard it,
by the way, that's great, unbelievable. It's all. He is
incredibly endearing and entertaining.
Speaker 4 (10:03):
There's no question, yes he is.
Speaker 3 (10:06):
But yeah, so like you, you're not having this his own.
This is a unique phenomenon created by perhaps you know,
as we've talked about everybody who watched him on film
first or second round grade. Well, there's obviously things beyond
the film the cause him going in the fifth round
of this draft, but people still view him as that
guy because anybody who watched tape, myself included, was like,
(10:27):
I love watching this guy play. Are there some bad habits?
Of course? Was he behind a bad offensive line with
no running game? Yes? Did he hold the ball and
take too many sacks? Of course? So that's things you're
going to look at. That's something you know, Kevin Stefanci
talked about last night on The Kevin Stefanski Show. Are
we playing that by the way, Gibbe in this No,
so he you know, he said, we want to see
him get the ballut, we want to see that pocket move.
(10:49):
We want to say him not you know, not take sacks,
be decisive, all of those things. But there's a lens
out there that he should be candid everything. But the
reality is he is a fifth rom pick and the
second quarterback picked by our team. Yeah, in this draft.
So it's it's really a fascinating thing. I think that
(11:09):
everybody who's been around and everybody who's local that has
watched it understands that while it was said to be
a four person quarterback competition, he's never been in the competition.
We've been saying that, Well, if he doesn't get the
reps today, he's not in the competition to start. And
he's not. And I don't know that Dylan Gabriel is.
Dylan Gabriel is getting some work. They like him a lot,
They are very pleased with Dylan Gabriel. But it's really
(11:32):
between Flacco and Pickett, and with Pickett on ice right now,
it's looking like Joe Flacco, who's been available and been
you know, excellent so far in this camp.
Speaker 2 (11:42):
Yeah, the the the circumstances that led to this opportunity,
and that's the way that it has to be. So
yesterday when you were when you were talking to coach
on the on the Coaches Show, and and he kind
of you went over like kind of the plan. What
what are fans going to see tonight from us?
Speaker 3 (11:56):
Offensively? I think you're going to see, you know what
this Kevin Sevanski offense is. I do think you'll see
him under center. I think you'll see the play action
boot game all of that, get him in some space,
allow him to throw it. I think he's going to
throw a lot, and I do think you're also going
to see some situations where we get into you know,
ten personnel, where we get into no tight ends. We
(12:20):
go four wide, We spread it out and put Shador
in the shotgun and let your Door, you know, operate
some quick game out of the shotgun, things that he's
comfortable doing. I think they're going to put him in
positions to succeed tonight. It'll be a mix I think
of what will be like the backbone of our offense
and then some things that shouldn't concepts that Shad Door
is comfortable with. And so that's that's my expectation. And
(12:41):
obviously the best thing we can do for him is,
you know, that offensive line gives them some time guys
get open, and then when we do, when we run
the ball, that we're able to run it. You know,
that's that's gonna help that under center. It's going to
help that play action game, all of those things. And
so I think it's going to be it's going to
be I think, wildly entertaining, and I hope that you know,
Chador comes out and shows people, you know, what he
(13:01):
is capable of doing. And all the things that people
who saw him on tape that were convinced that this
was a guy that could really kind of transform things
that you know, he gets that up. This is this
is the stage, right. I don't know that any rookie
quarterback in the National Football League this year is going
to get a stage like this right out of the gate.
He's the only one.
Speaker 2 (13:21):
No, yeah, the circumstances he's he's yeah, no, it is.
It's it's such a specific opportunity that that's come his way,
and it's kind of a perfect storm of things that
have led to this point. Beyond Shador, obviously, we know
we're not going to see Dylan because he's otherwise he
would be starting of the of the rest of the
(13:42):
rookie class. Do you anticipate seeing them all tonight?
Speaker 3 (13:45):
I do? I do, Yes, I do. I think you'll
see Mason Graham and Carson Swessinger. You will not probably
see them a lot. You know, Let's get them some
work and let's get them out, because these are huge
pieces that we're going to be counting on. But you know,
when you look at it, I also don't think you'll
need to see I wouldn't say Harold Fannon is gonna
play a ton you know, I think that obviously he's
(14:06):
going to play. But I think that, you know, when
I was talking about getting into some of that ten personnel,
I think part of that's gonna be because you know,
Fantom won't be out there. You will see you know
the rest of the guys. But you know, kind of
in my mind, offensively, we're not gonna see those quarterbacks
you talked about. I'm not sure if we will see
Jerome Ford or not. It certainly it seems possible to
me that we could see some some Jerome Ford, but
(14:28):
perhaps we will not won't see Judy, won't see Tillman,
won't see the starting offensive line, won't see Najoku. And defensively,
I think that really the only guys that I think
for sure you won't see will be Garrett Collins, new
some Denzel and probably Grant delp it would be my guest.
But I think other than that, you're gonna see.
Speaker 2 (14:48):
Everybody what And we'll get into the Caro Carolina's side
of this in a second when we do go kind
of behind enemy lines. How much did you watch last
night of the preseason football?
Speaker 3 (15:02):
We watched a decent amount. We were you know, we
were out at the at a local watering hole and
had the games on and we're able to catch a
little bit of the action. I'd see Joe Burrow, you know,
just go right up and down the field for two drives.
Jamar Chase get him in the end zone. I thought
he looked very good and sharp and everybody's happy, eat
and get out there. We saw in the Indie Baltimore
game Keaton Mitchell with somebody who I talked about. Looks
(15:25):
like he is fully back, and that is an incredible
kind of thunder and lightning combo where they're gonna be
able to run him out there after Derek Henry's beating
people up and then he's just gonna run away from him.
That's pretty scary, honestly, because he was a real home
run hitter that first year. For his injury last year,
Indy Anthony Richardson not recognizing to throw the ball into
the unblocked guy and you get two guys wide open
(15:47):
over there, and now he's got a finger injury. Yeah,
And we got to see our guy dtr for a
little bit there, and we watched the start of the
Raiders in Seattle, which is wild to me that for
that's a pre seas they didn't later Seattle.
Speaker 2 (16:02):
I feel like that should have been a week one
of the regular season, right, Yeah, with Pete going home.
And then of course the old AFC quest, right, I
mean that's there's those old AFC West you know, feelings
with those teams when the when the Seahawks are in
the AFC back in the back in the good old days.
Speaker 5 (16:17):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (16:17):
I it was interesting watching It was interesting watching the
Cincinnati game because as you're watching it, you're like, oh, wow,
like look at all this. I mean, Burrow goes nine
out of ten, I mean miss his first throw, hit
the next nine like they look like mid season. And
as I'm watching, and I'm just thinking to myself, what
are they doing out there? Like they they he hits
(16:39):
uh Jamar Chase on an out. That's a ball that's
thrown a little bit behind him, and Chase does what
he does. He kind of comes back for it and
then makes a spin and he goes to the barn.
The other one he threw back shoulder, which was stunning,
but the one on the out, he kind of under
threw it a little bit and then Jamar turned it
up field, and I'm watching this and I'm just thinking
to myself, like if if I'm Bengals ownership and Jamar
Chase is sprinting down the sidelines, I'm thinking the whole time, like,
(17:01):
don't shift into.
Speaker 4 (17:02):
Fifth gear, dude, like just pop a hammy, just coast.
Speaker 2 (17:06):
And it did seem like I will say this, those
did seem like there was a conscious effort from the
Philadelphia defense. There was one instance when a defensive lineman
pulled up might have been Jaalen and I wasn't Jalen Carter.
It was one of their defensive lineman kind of pulled
up before hitting Burrow, and it was kind of like
maybe that there was like a little bit of dialogue
like hey, don't hit him, like stay out of that,
(17:26):
because he did noticeably pull up when he got close
to Burrow.
Speaker 3 (17:31):
Yeah, and I think there was we saw some of
that around the league. I think maybe there's just some
talk about making sure you keep everybody you know protected
and safe. This is the preseason. Because there was another
in one of the games we were watching where somebody
could have taken a shot Gino Smith and now he
was a Seahawks, So maybe it was one of his buddies,
but absolutely did not take the shot that they could
have taken. So you know the throw you're talking about
that out to Jamar, which was in very many ways
(17:54):
similar to the one that was thrown where he did
a walk off. I want to say against Dallas last
year it was Dallas. So on quarterbacks they talked about it,
so that ball is actually thrown right where he wants
it to if they read in Burrow's mind, if he
sees that the corner that he's beaten him so definitively
(18:17):
on the out, there really isn't enough room to throw
it outside and have him turn it up. He'll throw
it to the inside shoulder, so it stops him and
allows him to naturally turn up because if you think
about the momentum of the corner who's so trailing, he's
trailing so much so that when he stops, he's already
bringing him back, so that guy can't stop in time
to get it. So that's how they get those catch
(18:37):
and runs on that out. So he's actually throwing it.
In quarterbacks they talked about I was like, dude, that's
so good that he throws that. He throws that to
the inside shoulder. If he's beaten him so much on
the out that the other guy's like really trying to
extress himself to get out so that he's catching it
and turning and that guy has no chance to put
on the brakes. It's like in top Gun, it's basically
(18:59):
he's already putting on the air break and he flies
right by.
Speaker 4 (19:01):
He flies right by. That's quarterback, master class quarterback and receiver.
Speaker 3 (19:06):
And the page they see it like talk about I
want it on my inside shoulder.
Speaker 2 (19:12):
So two days at L s U. Yeah, two years
at L s U. Then all this time in the
pros like that type of connection. It just takes year
upon year and rep upon rep to be able for
Burrow to be able to notice, Oh, he's so beat
him on the out that if I put it here,
because on an out, you never would want a kid
thrown it to the inside on and out. You always
want it to the boundary, unless you're doing it at
(19:34):
this level.
Speaker 4 (19:34):
Of master class.
Speaker 3 (19:35):
And then really I feel like, yeah, so that was
and they did.
Speaker 2 (19:40):
I mean, plus he turns right into the sprint. Yes,
I mean he's already turned right back into the sprint,
and then he's gone and it's no one's catching it.
Speaker 3 (19:47):
They've thrown that many a time. Actually, last night when
I was, I was while I was on at the bar,
I was, I was regaling people with that tail and
they're like, oh, wow, that's really good. I'm like, I
knew you would appreciate that, because that was one of
that It's when I'm when I do the morning Bottle
with Luca, I often throw quarterbacks on in the background,
and that's a that was a good that was to me.
That was that And there were some really good golf
stuff obviously, and the whole show's great, but that was
(20:09):
one where I was like, oh, man.
Speaker 2 (20:11):
As you're watching it, and obviously they're not our team,
we're not hosting Bengals daily, but do you find yourself
when you watch these fur you know, these massive, massive
stars playing the preseason. I can't help but just be like, yeah,
just get out of here, unhurt. Like that's in hits constantly, of.
Speaker 3 (20:27):
Course, because there's the reward is nothing, right. The reward
is that they hope that this is going to allow
them to start the season faster than they've done in
years past. Right, Yeah, but like the fact that he
played in this preseason again, really probably doesn't have much
bearing to do with how he comes out and plays
in the future. Now they may say different, and who knows,
they're playing against us. I hope that it doesn't. I
(20:47):
hope they continue to struggle early in the year. But yeah,
you don't want to see anybody of consequence in the
NFL get hurt like Rashaun Slater gets hurt and is
done now for the year. Down for the Chargers. That's
a devastating blow. That's awful. Nobody wants to see any
of that stuff. That is not what you ever want
to see in the preseason. So yeah, I'm with you.
I think that it is a very It's kind of
(21:09):
like i'd liken it too when I'm watching, you know,
my buddy's in a ladder match in the WW if
I know somebody in that where I'm like, all right,
I know you're doing this. I know it's a it's
a big part of the show. It's a big it's
you know, but like, just don't get hurt. Just don't
get hurt. Yeah, because it's the league's better with Joe
Burrow in it. The league is better with Jamar Chase.
It's the league's better with its stars being stars and playing,
(21:33):
so you don't want to see it. Now, it could
happen no matter what. I mean. We've lost MJ Emerson
in a no contact situation, so you never know when
it can happen. But yeah, you absolutely, I'm watching that
being like, all right, cool that he got good work,
get him out of there.
Speaker 2 (21:47):
Yeah, that's that's as I'm watching this stuff, that's all
I'm thinking. And then i'm you know, you think about
Anthony Richardson and you've detailed like you know what happened
on the play. But I mean, he has a dislocated
pinky now. And this is a guy who they drafted
four overall. He's going into his third year. He only
played he only started twelve games at the University of Florida,
(22:07):
that's it. And he was basically a fifty percent passer
at his time at the University of Florida. They fell
in love with him with the measurables and the physicality
and all this stuff at the draft. But this guy
has not played enough football. Man, He's not at all
played enough football. And you just see like the project
that he would be. And he's probably one of those
guys who needed like a two year red shirt would
(22:28):
have been the right thing to do with him. And then,
quite honestly, something you and I talk about in the
off season a lot like go play in the UFL
for ten games, like he needs a lot of ball,
a ton of ball, and the things that got him
in a last And so if you're an Indy, you're like, Okay,
we're in year three with this guy. We drafted him fourth.
We don't even really know what we have. I mean,
(22:49):
that's the thing that's so hard about this is like
what do they have with him? Like, if you put
yourself in their shoes, it feels like they're kind of
ready to move on. But at the same point, what
is he twenty three?
Speaker 3 (23:00):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (23:01):
Young, Yeah, it's crazy. I don't know what you do there.
And now he's not gonna get much of a chance
because he's gonna be down for a while.
Speaker 3 (23:10):
Yeah, I mean, it's one of those things. And this,
you know, he's this is in addition to as you've
talked about at nauseum, is inability to necessarily throw the
ball accurately consistently. He just can't stay healthy. This is
just another another knock in that in that you know
in that repertoire. It's, uh, the preseason is a fascinating
(23:31):
thing because it's football tonight. We're doing it in a
way that you know, makes a lot of sense to me.
They're still guys that I'm gonna want to see them
make plays and then see them get out of there
right away. But it's tough when you have somebody that
you've invested in for the season. But like we said,
Rashawn Slater happened to practice, I'm Jammerson happened to practice. CJ.
(23:52):
Gardner Johnson out looks like he avoided serious injury at
leastays of what I saw last night. I haven't looked
into it this morning, but it seems like, you know,
he avoided serious injury that happened to practice. So it's
it's just hard. It's part of the unfortunately, it's part
of the game rights, it's part of the business. Yeah,
but yeah, I'm with you. You want to mitigate risk, but
(24:13):
the truth is every time you put a helmet on,
even if you're in shorts, there's a risk of injury
out there. They're just always is.
Speaker 2 (24:22):
Yeah, three more games tonight, including ours, of course, that
is a seven o'clock kick. Also kicking at seven o'clock
is Detroit at the Falcons and then the Kammis and Patriots.
Speaker 4 (24:34):
I have not seen anything.
Speaker 2 (24:36):
I don't know is Rabel having Drake mayplay because everything
coming out of there is I mean, they did the
joint practices, so my hunches.
Speaker 3 (24:42):
No, I would think not, especially as em.
Speaker 4 (24:45):
In Washington did the joint practices.
Speaker 3 (24:47):
Yeah, and it felt like there was a little bit
of you know, bad blood there in that we had
people brawling, coach brawling, all of that. It looks like,
according to some reports, maybe one drive if he plays
at all, it'll be one drive, Okay.
Speaker 6 (25:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (25:06):
It sounds like he's had a great camp and played
very well in the joint scrimmage with Yeah.
Speaker 3 (25:11):
People are saying he outplayed h.
Speaker 4 (25:12):
The Red skincamis.
Speaker 3 (25:14):
Yes, I'm thought he out played Jane Daniels, which would
be incredible. I mean, people, they're very high on him,
There's no doubt about it. They are very very high
on him.
Speaker 5 (25:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (25:22):
Yeah, And I think the best example and the biggest
proof of that is the fact that Raves went there
because Rabes could have gone anywhere, he could have waited,
and he was only going to go to the right spot,
and that one is certainly the right spot, and they're
off to a nice start. So we had preseason three
games last night, three more tonight, and of course the
headliner being ours. Those are your hot topics today, presented

down in Carolina to take on the Carolina Panthers in
preseason game number one. What do you anticipate? I get
you kind of. I think you alluded to this earlier, buddy,
(26:44):
but it sounds like maybe a series of two for
the Carolina starters from Canalis tonight.
Speaker 3 (26:49):
Yeah, that's what he was saying. You know, I think
if they have some success on the first series, that
they will go ahead and they will call it after
one series. If they don't, I'd like the three and
out off and simply I certainly could see them come
back out for a little more work. And you know,
this is a team that I think is gonna be
pretty fun to watch. On offense, They've got a good
offensive line, you know, Austin Corbett and Robert Hant, Taylor Moten,
(27:10):
Damian Lewis and then Akuano. I always struggle with his name,
e kem Equano. Ikuanu. That's the first round pick, Ikwanu.
And by the way, that that's it ikwan who had
a tough time with Miles Garrett in practice. I'm sure
he's thrilled that he is not going to be playing
in this game. But they've got they've got good skill.
(27:32):
You look at you know, they draft a Tetaro McMillan.
They've got Adam Thielen, They've got Xavier Legit, they've got
Hunter renfros In. Now we'll see. He hasn't really done
much since twenty twenty one, but we'll see, if you know,
he's still left in the tank. But they've got some
good receivers they can I like Jatavian Sanders, who is
their tight end out of Texas fourth round pick a
(27:53):
year ago at thirty three, catches for three hundred and
forty two yards. They like him a good deal, and
then they really can run the ball. They've got who
would have had this? The Panthers might be the only
team in the NFL that has two guys on their
roster that ran for one thousand yards in the NFL
last year. I can't think of anybody else who would
(28:13):
fit that bill.
Speaker 4 (28:15):
They had two thousand yard rushers last year.
Speaker 3 (28:17):
Well, they had one, Chuba Hubbard, who ran for a
career high on ninety five yards. He was eighth in
the NFL and rushing yards. He ran for ten touchdowns
four point eight yards of Cary they signed to a
big extension, but one of their big free agent signings
this offseason was Rico doubtell. He ran for one thousand
and seventy nine yards last year for the Dallas Cowboys.
They drafted Trevor Etn. Now people, I don't know if
(28:38):
people remember, but they drafted Jonathan Brooks last year, and
then he tore the same knee. Yeah, tore the same
knee again, which is very said. And then you got
Bryce Young. Bryce Young in his last three games last year,
seven touchdowns, no interceptions, had one hundred plus rating in
all three. And then his final game last season against
Atlanta in the game Atlanta had to win. It was
(28:59):
a playoff game for a Lanta. They had to win
to get into the playoffs. In that game, Bryce Young
completed seventy four percent of his passes for two hundred
and fifty one yards, three touchdowns, no picks, one hundred
and twenty three rating, highest of his career. Andy added
two rushing touchdowns. So at the end of the year,
Bryce Young was cooking. So they've got a big, good
(29:20):
veteran offensive line. You know, Ikwanu is in his fourth season,
He's a first round pick. Damian Lewis in his sixth
was the third round pick. Corbett was a second round
pick in his eighth year now, Robert Hunt as second
round pick in his sixth and Moten was a second
round pick now in his ninth year. So they've got
big dudes up front. Austin Corbet's the smallest one, and
he's like morphed into Joel Bottonio. He just looks like
(29:41):
a complete off. It's like crazy. They just all end
up looking like stut offensive lineman. So I think they're
a pretty fun team. McMillan in Legit and Legit is
built crazy. He is so thick in his lower body.
It is a wild McMillan's a big guy. And then
they got feel I mean, they've got some real talent here.
Speaker 2 (30:02):
Yeah, the running that you mentioned Doubtell Trevor Etti and
at Georgia last year was a guy that didn't have
the year probably people thought he would have ye, but
but he's an explosive player too. So the running back
room has got good depth to it, you know, kind
of beyond that. So my hunch is then for them offensively,
when once Bryce goes away, are they going to give
Andy Andy Dalton or will they go right to Jack Plumber.
Speaker 3 (30:24):
Now it'll be Andy Dalton, who obviously a three time
pro Bowler played started five games for them a year ago,
completed sixty six percent of his passes, nine or eighty
nine yard, seven touchdowns, six picks. He's the number two,
he'll play I think a lot. I think that kind
of similar to you know, when Burrow was in there.
They're just gonna try to get the ball out quickly.
I don't think they want to expose him to our
(30:44):
pass rushers with hit that second offensive line, because I'm
gonna tell you right now, our pass rushers are very good,
the depth of our pass rushers very good. So I
think Dalton he'll be in there for a while, but
I expect them probably to try to do whatever they
can to keep him safe. Is not going to be
you know, a lot of deep, dry and throwing the
ball down the field. And then Jack Plumber will come
in at the end. And Plumber up was the quarterback
(31:05):
at Louisville, I guess before Tyler Shuck went ten and four.
They're back in twenty twenty three and had a nice season.
Speaker 2 (31:12):
Yeah, So that's that's And then defensively from them, you know,
mostly are they gonna play their ones defensively to a
series or two?
Speaker 4 (31:20):
Is that kind of the feeling you got.
Speaker 3 (31:21):
Yeah, I don't think we'll see Derek Brown. He didn't
participate in the joint practice, so I'm seen a reason
why they would put him out there. The Pro bowler
from twenty twenty three last year, missed all but one game,
got to suffer a knee injury early in that season.
So they're looking for him to get back into form
because in twenty twenty three he was unbelievable. Two sacks,
fifteen quarterback hits, one hundred and three tackles, most tackles
(31:41):
by a defensive tackle in the history of the National
Football League he had in that Pro Bowl season. They
made some moves up front. They brought in Bobby Brown
from the Rams. You're gonna hear me say that a lot.
They brought in Trishaun Wharton from the Kansas City Chiefs
is two times Super Bowl champs. So they've got some
big guys up front in this in this three four
ash Robinson's three twenty, Wharton, you know, Bobby Brown's three thirty,
(32:03):
Browns three twenty. And then at the second level that's
really where they got in. They made some moves in
terms of bringing people in. They brought in Christian rose Boom,
the linebacker from the Rams who had a cur high
hundred and thirty three tackles a year ago. They brought
in Patrick Jones from Minnesota who had a career high
seven sacks a year ago. And then they drafted Nick
Gordon from Texas A and M previously at Purdue, who
(32:27):
had last year five sacks fourteen tackles for lost at
Texas A and M. He was their second round pick.
In the third round, they draft Princely Uman and mell
Yellen Uman and me Yellen Uman Miel. They've got some
names there, Uman Ellen, Princely Uman, me Ellen out of
old miss.
Speaker 2 (32:44):
You and Sicily. I'm gonna have your hands full time
called Princeley. When your name Princely, you don't really need much.
Prince went with one name. You're just adding a lead
to that.
Speaker 3 (32:51):
Prince Lee fine, he's a guy that you know they
like off the edge as well. In their three four
had you know, almost twenty five college. So that's where
they're that's where they've kind of changed there. And back end,
Jace Horne, the pro bowler, he's gonna be out with
a hand. But they brought in Trayvon Merrick who had
been with the Raiders, who had a career high hundred
and four tackles last year. They got Mike Jackson, they
(33:13):
got Nick Scott, they brought Lathan Ransom, the buck guy. Yeah,
it was their fourth round pick this year. So yeah,
that's where they're at. And then Shaw Smith Wade is
their their nickel who was their fifth round pick year ago.
Had a nice season as a as a rookie. So
that's that's where they're at. They play three four big defense,
big guys up front, not as big out on the edges.
(33:36):
So it'll be and I think it'll be a fun
matchup for the Browns. But yeah, they're good. They're gonna
get their starters in there on both sides of the ball.
Speaker 2 (33:42):
Yeah, it feels like Tampa has Tampa's the cream of this.
And then it's kind of a race between Atlanta and
Carolina for who's got second. And I think most people
think it'll be Atlanta, but there is there's some juice
for this Carolina team.
Speaker 3 (33:56):
There's definitely some juice for this Carolina team, There's no doubt,
and and a lot of it has to do with
I think how fun we have thought. You know that
this offense can be. We gonna ask you, I mean,
housekeeping's coming in. We're good on the radio, Thank you very.
Speaker 4 (34:13):
Much, Come on in. How long you've been there? Like
six nights? You probably know him my first name?
Speaker 3 (34:20):
Yeah, unbelievable.
Speaker 4 (34:22):
All right, there you go.
Speaker 2 (34:23):
There you are behind enemy lines for the Carolina Panthers
for the preseason debut tonight between your Cleveland Browns and
your Carolina Panthers.

Speaker 4 (35:30):
Here is ze one on one with coach.
Speaker 3 (35:32):
All Right, coach, before we get into the preseason opener
tomorrow night, let's take a step back and look at
yesterday in that joint practice that was first opportunity to
get some work against another football team. Overall, big picture,
how do you think that the Cleveland Browns did.
Speaker 5 (35:46):
Yeah, I was really pleased with yesterday.
Speaker 7 (35:48):
I thought the guys competed like crazy, which is part
of this when you're going up against somebody in a
different color jersey. So they did a nice job really
on the offensive side, defensive side, special teams, just of
that effort that's required.
Speaker 5 (36:01):
Was it perfect? No, that's what you know.
Speaker 7 (36:03):
We're chasing that perfection, but we can teach off of
some of the moments.
Speaker 5 (36:07):
But I thought our.
Speaker 7 (36:09):
Really good players played really good, and I think that's
that's a great thing for us as these guys are
starting a round into you know, football shapes not the
right way of putting it, because it's not a conditioning thing.
But as they round into football form getting ready for.
Speaker 3 (36:22):
A week one well, one of the things that you
talked about kind of I think day one training camp
we got to you know, callous our minds, callous our
bodies and for the first time in year tenure here
and if I'm wrong about that, correct me. But we've
had multiple live tackling periods, including one that was a
twenty plus minute period. So let's just go to the
genesis of that decision. How did you arrive at that point?
And I can tell you I heard and talk to
(36:44):
multiple guys come outfield who were like, we were ray
more prepared for this joint practice than our opponents were.
Speaker 7 (36:50):
Well, I would tell you we did go live previously,
but it was in COVID, so I don't know if
that Maybe that year doesn't count because there was no preseason.
So in our yes, we have gone live. But I
think the big picture, Nathan is every season you look
at your football team and you try to figure out
what they need to get ready for the season. And
I look at what we've done in the past or
(37:11):
haven't done in the past and are there are there
opportunities or are things that can get our football team
ready for a week one. So thought that there were
some opportunities to change up a little bit of our
practice schedule, as you mentioned, and certainly the live part
is a part of that as well, and then going
against an opponent in week one of the preseason.
Speaker 5 (37:29):
We have not done that before.
Speaker 7 (37:30):
So I think if you couple those live periods with
an extra practice versus a team in Week one, that
leads to a lot of the decisions and not playing
the starters in the game versus Carolina because they've gotten
upwards of call it thirty six forty plays in a
live or very competitive thud period versus another team.
Speaker 3 (37:51):
Did you get the sense your players enjoyed it? I
certainly get sense that they felt very good about where
they're at because of those periods.
Speaker 7 (37:57):
Yes, And listen, we've all been around a lot long
time where live was just part of it, used to
be just part of training camp, and there's been Listen,
the evolution of football is real and the safety and
something we take very seriously. Having said that, if there's
opportunities to do it in a safe environment and you know.
What I would point out is the guys we had
all those live plays and we didn't sustain injuries from those.
(38:20):
And the reason is we had buy in from our
football team, and our defensive players tackled up high. We
didn't have any low tackling. We didn't have any cut blocks. Obviously,
we didn't bring the tight end across and cut the
defensive end down. So I think there's ways to do
it and do it in a safe environment.
Speaker 3 (38:37):
So it was a good success yesterday. He saw what
you wanted to see. Let's talk about the quarterbacks because
all of them did get some work, and we know
that we won't see Joe and then Kenny and Dylan
are nursing their hamstring injuries. But what did you see
in the periods that they were able to get.
Speaker 7 (38:50):
Yeah, I thought they all did a nice job trying
to get everybody as much work as as we can
when we're down here. Obviously, Shador will get the majority
of the game, so he's going to get call it
fifty plays of game work work, which I think will
be great for him. I think Snoop will get him
in there later in the game as well. Want to
be smart about that with the fact that Tyler just
(39:11):
got here, so don't want to just throw him out there,
but if he's ready, we'll get him out there as well.
And then in the practice itself, trying to make sure
that they all get get their moments. Obviously, Kenny and
Dylan are limited by their injuries right now, so they
could really only do seven on seven And if we
put them in a team drill, it was catch, set,
throw and get the ball out, not asking them to
move too much.
Speaker 3 (39:32):
How about Snoop, it was with the and I know
it was very well liked in the locker room and
certainly in the building last year in training camp, and
you get him back in here, sign him on a Tuesday,
he gets on a plane and he practices on Wednesday.
Speaker 5 (39:42):
Yeah, I love him.
Speaker 7 (39:43):
He Snoop's one of my favorite guys, favorite teammate. This
guy just loves ball. I mean eats it, drinks it,
sleeps it. He just wants to spend every waking minute
in this meeting room watching tape. So it's been really
fun just having him back around. His energy is infectious
and the kid just wants to be part of a
football team. And luckily we were in need of somebody
(40:05):
that could come in and operate quickly. The fact that
he was with us last season. Although we've evolved quite
a bit, he has enough of a general understanding of
our terminology where he can go.
Speaker 5 (40:14):
Out and play.
Speaker 3 (40:16):
Everybody's excited to see the rookies first preseason game. You
get to see him, You got to see them in
the competitive situation yesterday. But you know, from Mason on down.
We mentioned the quarterbacks, but Mason and Harold and you
know Dylan and Carson, how did they do in your eyes?
And are you also excited to see them actually play
football for the first time?
Speaker 5 (40:33):
I am. Now.
Speaker 7 (40:34):
You know, it's interesting because Dylan Samson has been tackled
it feels like fifty times in practice by our guys,
so I've seen in fact, by Carson, I've seen a
lot of that. So I think this first game is
really a step in that direction. Let's get them in
their uniform, let's get them through pregame warm up, let's
get them some game action. But it's not an extended look.
(40:55):
That extended look will come later. But they've gotten a
ton of good reps in practice and in these joint sessions.
Speaker 3 (41:02):
When you look at kind of this rosters you go
through and maybe from injury. Some of the questions that arise,
for example, in the cornerback room, how big is this game?
In your evaluation of Okay, we've got Greg and we
played Greg outside, we've played Greg inside. We know where
Denzel is going to be, but we need to find
that third corner. Is that going to be a nickel
that's going to keep Greg outside the whole time? Or
is that third corner? Actually do we like it? You know,
(41:23):
we go with the base, We have Greg outside and
when it comes to the nickel, he slides back in
as he did with MJ. How big is this game?
And really the next probably two weeks for that position?
So the fine, Kay, who's cornerback? Who's cornerback for?
Speaker 5 (41:34):
Yeah, it's a big deal.
Speaker 7 (41:36):
And that's what training camps about the preseasons about it
is while we're getting the team ready, we're also evaluating
our players. And part of an evaluation is putting them
in the best position literally to succeed. So where and
you know, take an offensive player, is the best inside
as a slot receiver? Is the best outside as a
tight end? Hey, do we like him inline or do
(41:57):
we like him more? As an F So that's the
same conversation you're with a lot of your corners. It's
this guy a better inside outside player. Does they have
flex So I think part of it with MJ's injury
is we do have to see what the best combination
is for our players. Greg's a football player. Greg could
play inside, Greg could play outside, Greg could play safety.
In the meantime, we'll get him some work outside as
(42:17):
Greg gets healthy, and then figure out our guys that
we feel really good about what they look like inside.
And I'd point out two guys in particular, Cam Mitchell
and Miles hard And have played for us and have
played well and played inside. So we just are going
to continue our evaluation of them over the next few weeks.
Speaker 3 (42:33):
So these they'll play a lot then correct. Okay, one,
I think we always like, you know, the Alberia guys,
and I think certainly in the receiver room, we got
a couple of Luke Florida has made a lot of plays,
has look very good, created separation, and Gage Larvindans consistently
made plays as well. For those guys, this is kind
of a real reward, right, an opportunity on a big
stage to put keep going forward like that, when you
(42:54):
see these young guys that you guys are able to
kind of find and they're able to have that success.
Number one, as a coach, I'm sure that's got to
be somewhat warding. And number two, you know, what do
you want to see when with the lights on with
those guys?
Speaker 7 (43:05):
You know, I think the big thing and you mentioned
the lights and it's true, and we'll actually meet with
the rookies about this very thing. You have to take
the practice field to the game field. What you don't
want to do is, hey, the lights are on, I
want to go perform. I want to go do something
different than I've done on the practice field, And that
would be the complete opposite of what.
Speaker 5 (43:20):
You should do.
Speaker 7 (43:21):
You should just take that preparation, all the work you've
done in the on the field, in the meeting rooms
and apply that into the game, regardless of the fact
that they're keeping score and it's in a game setting
under the lights like you mentioned. But if those guys
just continue to do what they're have been doing, they'll
be just fine.
Speaker 8 (43:37):
All right.
Speaker 3 (43:37):
Yesterday or we saw some field goals attempted at very
small uprights, but they weren't even straight. I don't know
exactly what they were going for with those uprights.
Speaker 6 (43:45):
They're called the skinnies.
Speaker 3 (43:46):
Yeah, we've seen skinnies, though we have skinnies, but they're
at least still upright here. We're very wonky. Nonetheless, Dustin
Hopkins was splitting these wonky uprights. Seems like he's had
a very good off season kicking the ball. What have
you seen from him? Because two years ago he was
so good, but it's so instrumental in many ways in
our ability to get to the playoffs. Last year not
as good from him. What have you seen? And how
confident that he can return to that?
Speaker 9 (44:07):
For him?
Speaker 5 (44:08):
Yeah, I'm very confident.
Speaker 7 (44:09):
And he's been with the team all spring long. He
committed to being at the off season program, committed to
getting better. He's been incredible through offseason, been incredible through
these training camp practices, and then this is again the
next step for him is going in these preseason games
and grooving that ball and seeing that ball come off
your foot and make sure that your technique is where
(44:30):
you want it. But I want to get him some
opportunities in these games as well, just so he can
take all that hard work that he's been doing in
the off season and applied here.
Speaker 3 (44:39):
One thing we've been kind of searching for during your
tenure is a kick returner, and it feels like in
DeAndre Carter, we have one. For a variety of reasons,
they have never quite yet made it to the season. Well,
knock on wood that that is not the case one
more time. How do you plan to use him? Because
I know you want to get him some work. At
the same time, it's like we know the history. We
want a Week one against Cincinnati.
Speaker 7 (44:59):
DeAndre I won't return in this game. He's gotten a
ton of good work in practice.
Speaker 5 (45:03):
He's a vet.
Speaker 7 (45:04):
We've seen he has a ton of reps on tape.
So we'll get him some work in games coming up here.
But this one felt like the right decision was just
to take a look at some of the other guys.
Speaker 3 (45:13):
Has he shown you a little more, maybe even as
a receiver than perhaps we expect. I only have the
five hundred yard season with the Chargers, but he's made
a lot of places.
Speaker 7 (45:19):
Yeah, he's a guy that we really really trust. You
can put him out there really playing any position. You
know he's gonna do his job, do it at a
high level. Run his route, catch the ball. Pretty simple
thought process. But he's a guy that we're not saying
is just a returner. He can give us depth in
the wide receiver room.
Speaker 3 (45:37):
One of the things I think is always cool about
it when I observe you coaching is when the legend
comes back, you're always so interested in talking with him.
I loved being a flyball when he came over and
talked to Bernie and I during that preseason practice. Well,
you have a legend back right now who's coaching the
hof Joe Thomas and really has kind of taken to
one under his wing, and it's been awesome watching. I
(45:57):
know Joe's super thrilled to be doing it. It seems
like the Wand is really thriving under his tutelage. That's
gotta seem like a cool bonus. And Joe Batonia said,
you guys are trying to pull together a fund to
bring him in full time here. But what's it been
like seeing Joe work and work with a guy like
the Wand.
Speaker 7 (46:13):
Yeah, coach Thomas as we call him, is doing a
great job. Yeah, I don't think we can afford him unfortunately.
Speaker 3 (46:20):
Knows big rate, big rate coach.
Speaker 7 (46:22):
But Joe's Joe is obsessed with technique. He loves technique.
I mean, he just he could talk it all day.
So we're we're just taking we're pulling that out of him.
And and certainly Dewan is a beneficiary. But I'll tell
you our line coaches are loving having Joe around and
just hearing how he talks about the game, the minutia
of that position. I don't think the average viewer or
(46:44):
listener gets a feel for that, and and how much
goes into this these players along the offensive line. It
can look thankless at times, it can look you know,
just physical times, but there's a lot of thought that
goes into it.
Speaker 5 (46:57):
And Joe's uh.
Speaker 7 (47:00):
Desire to pass along his knowledge of technique has been
fun to watch.
Speaker 3 (47:04):
We got give me right next to us give me.
I think we need to find the clip. There was
a clip from Browns Daily a few years ago where
I asked Joe simply the question, what went through your
mind from the time the play was called to the
time the ball was snapped? He talked twenty minutes NonStop
about the checklists and now he'd get treel segs because
of where his toe was. And he used to drive
to like just the minutia for somebody that good and
(47:27):
then to think that they're also a supercomputer and it's nuts.
Speaker 5 (47:30):
Yeah, it's incredible. And again.
Speaker 7 (47:33):
All of that, what he's doing is trying to pass
that along to our young players. Obviously, Dewan playing left
tackle and Joe knows that position. Well, I think that's
we're so lucky to be able to have a guy
that can stand there talk to. Dewan has the credentials
that you know, there's not very few have in the
respect and it's been fun to watch.
Speaker 3 (47:54):
All Right, we'll get you out here on this one
because I know we like one on ones and I'm
sure you get in the film room after a joint
practic and there's some good ones. Miles. The Eurostep was
pretty good. But did Alex write? And so great to
see him back. Basically flipping a guy, a human grown,
a giant grown man over that had to get you
pretty fired.
Speaker 5 (48:11):
Well. He did it in one on ones. He also
did on Kickoff.
Speaker 3 (48:14):
Yeah, he did flat somebody.
Speaker 7 (48:16):
Alex is he's a no, no fair dodge and he's
going straight ahead and uh, you don't get get out
of his way. But that's uh he's got a great
skill set. Great to have him back out there healthy,
but he plays the game really at one speed and
you saw it the other day.
Speaker 3 (48:30):
For a guy like him, Take Isaiah, Joe, Tryan Shainka
who's come in acquires looked good time. I mean, there's
a lot that room has a lot of guys. Is
this a real opportunity and it's a rotation Survey's gonna play,
that's the way Jim does it. But you know you're
gonna get a little bit against the starters. Like are
those twelve plays where you see maybe guys who are
in that mix for a role. Okay, now you're going
against their starters. Is that some real good tape to
(48:51):
try to pull out of here? Yeah?
Speaker 7 (48:52):
I think yes, it's all part of the evaluation. But
but you're exactly right, those those back up that end
position is extremely competitive and I like all those guys.
They all play with great effort. So that's definitely one
to watch and they're gonna make tough decisions for us.
Speaker 3 (49:10):
You know, it's gonna be a lot of fun. I'm
sure you're excited to see your team play some football
tomorrow night. Coach, Thanks for the time and best lucky Thanks.
Speaker 2 (49:15):

The Twisted Tea Hotline brought to you by twisted t
hardeceed tea official sports a swistficial sponsor. Rather your Cleveland Browns,
keep it twisted, Cleveland, Chris. We were trying to put this.
You've been around, You've done a lot of this stuff. Man,
this is such a unique experience tonight for a fifth
round pick. Essentially, Hey, here's the ball, enjoy the game,
Gonna get a ton of snaps.
Speaker 4 (50:37):
Everyone's been clamoring for it. You're gonna get it.
Speaker 2 (50:39):
Do you have anything like this in your career in
terms of what is otherwise a meaningless first preseason game
to have this type of juice behind it.
Speaker 8 (50:48):
Yeah, So he's not the first, like fifth rounder or
whatever to start game one of a preseason. I mean
last year, for example, the Panthers started Jack Plumber, whom
I think you're gonna see plenty of tonight. So guys
have started when you're like, huh, okay, that's interesting. But
there has never been a player like this that I
(51:09):
can remember that has entered the NFL draft the way
that he did and now continues to be the narrative
that he is. No. I mean, there's nothing I cannot
come up with a name. I can't come up with
a situation in terms of a team that has been
searching for its quarterback. It feels like for the better
part of three plus decades. It's just I cannot wait.
(51:33):
I think it's gonna be absolutely insane in a fun.
Speaker 3 (51:36):
Way, Chris, what is it that you want to see
or you're hoping to see from Shador Sanders tonight?
Speaker 8 (51:43):
So, by the way, I couldn't be invited down to
the room. It's you and Gibbie. And there's what happened, Nathan.
Speaker 3 (51:49):
Now you could certainly come down. I'm in Gibbe's room.
Gibbe is gone. The only the person's been in here
so far is the housekeeper. Give's on the bus, and
then I got to take this comrax down. So I
don't even know if there's another head said here. To
be honest with you, I don't know what our capabilities are.
Speaker 8 (52:05):
By the way, better leave, Better leave a tip for
the for the house saying, let.
Speaker 2 (52:10):
Me ask you guys a question. Do you guys tip
daily or you tip at the end.
Speaker 3 (52:13):
Of the stay, you tip at the end of this
at the end of the day.
Speaker 4 (52:17):
That's what I think too.
Speaker 2 (52:18):
But then I the thing I was concerned about is
what if it's a different housekeeper, or do we just
assume they all pool that.
Speaker 8 (52:25):
Yeah, it's like uh servers and uh bus boys and
bus girls. Right, you got pool?
Speaker 2 (52:32):
So I hope so because I did. I never know
what to do on that. I do what you guys do,
but I just some Every once in a while I
think about it, I'm like, God, this is like day
three of a five night or like, am I sure
it's going to be the same person all the time?
Speaker 5 (52:45):
I hope they?
Speaker 8 (52:47):
After which drive? Do we have this discussion? Should Joe
Thomas and I have this discussion?
Speaker 4 (52:52):
Do that when Shador goes out?
Speaker 8 (52:55):
Ah? Nice build programming both.
Speaker 3 (52:58):
That's right.
Speaker 4 (52:59):
I'm here for you. I'm here for you, buddy.
Speaker 8 (53:02):
Hey, it's actually a legit question. It's really good.
Speaker 4 (53:08):
What do you want to see from him tonight, suure,
not Joe oh or.
Speaker 8 (53:13):
The house cleaner? I'd like mince mince on the pillow.
They don't do that anymore. Thing of the past, good
callback Rose. So what do I want to see? I
would like to see him stripe it a couple times.
I want to see some good throws downfield, you know,
I really do. But most importantly I want to see
(53:37):
that he looks like he belongs. Too. Often you get guys,
particularly guys who've been sacked a lot in college, try
and keep plays alive. Everything's got to be extended, the
philosophy of throw it away and live for another play.
Like what quarterback every year leads the NFL in throwing
(53:58):
the ball away? Do you guys know what this is?
Speaker 3 (54:00):
I guess is Patrick Mahomes.
Speaker 8 (54:02):
No, it's always Aaron Rodgers, always interesting. He lives to
see another day, and that's why his interception numbers are
always so low, when his touchdown numbers were through the roof,
because he understood that the defense is going to screw
up at some point. It's a little bit. I hate
to mix sports because I know, Nathan, you're not a
(54:24):
huge baseball guy. But I was day I know, but
not anyway. I about jumped through the phone when Desciliano
goes the other day that Gavin Williams is throwing a
no hitter, and you guys are like, who I wanted
to come to you guys, you.
Speaker 3 (54:39):
Have to understand that is that's that's just yeah, that's yeah, yeah, yeah,
because he talks baseball all the time on our showing
where I was like well.
Speaker 4 (54:47):
He tries to sneak it in. And so every time
is that it is that a team?
Speaker 8 (54:52):
What is sport?
Speaker 4 (54:53):
I don't even I don't know what that is?
Speaker 8 (54:54):
Got it, got it, got it all right. The only
reason I'm doing a guys all U l A.
Speaker 4 (55:00):
Guys just want to talk baseball all the time.
Speaker 8 (55:02):
Not true. I'm using this as a football reference. Baseball
guys will tell you the only way that home runs
happen is when pitchers make mistakes. And a lot of
times in the NFL, the defense will do something that
will open the door for the offense. Sometimes it's an
amazing throw, right, it happens, but occasionally something gets screwed up.
(55:24):
There's a community, so it's okay to live to see
another play. And I want to see that part of
his game that would show maturation, that would show that, yes,
he's worked on something that was a shortcoming for him
in college. Things of that Nature's he's not going to
know it all tonight, right, we know that, and so
(55:44):
that it's okay. You want to see him improve in
an area or two, not in twelve.
Speaker 3 (55:51):
No, I think that's right. I think to me, it's
kind of the pre snap operation in the huddle, getting
people lined up, all of that, and then post snap
right be to deve get rid of the football, don't
hold on too long, don't try to make too many plays,
and I think you know, come to Fancy is going
to give him a play book tonight that are things
that he's comfortable with and things that he they feel
(56:12):
confident that he's going to be able to excuse him
that he feels confident, and that's what we're going to
get to see here tonight. Beyond Shador, which is obviously
what I think everybody's eyes are upon. I mean, we've
seen the ticket prices for this game are are ludicrous
and more than a Carolina Panthers regular season game, So
clearly that's what the majority want to see. The reality is,
you know, he's not going to be the day one
(56:33):
starter for the Cleveland Browns. Beyond that, what is it
that you are really excited about to see tonight?
Speaker 8 (56:43):
I don't know how long either of them will play,
but Mason Graham and Carson Schwetzinger, Yeah, you know the
strength of this team is going to have to be
that side of the football. And I know that Kevin
Stefanski spoke glowingly about both of them. Nathan on the
on the call we were on with him, and you know,
he was saying that Mason Graham is a guy that
(57:04):
you'll be able to line up next to Miles Garrett.
I know some people when we drafted him were like, well,
he was a read and react guy at Michigan, and
can he really go forward or is he just a
side to side dude that can hold the offensive lineman
and then make a play. But I think that, you know,
just because he did something well at Michigan doesn't mean
that he can't do something exceptionally well in Jim Schwartz's defense,
(57:26):
So is he going to become Aaron Donalds? Okay, probably
not Aaron Donalds, kind of a one on one guy,
and maybe that that's ever to play at the position.
But can he create matchups for himself and Miles Garrett together,
That's something that's appetizing. And then Carson Swessinger, Let's be honest,
when we drafted him at the beginning of day two,
people are like, Okay, interesting story, but off ball linebacker
(57:49):
for the first pick when this team has other needs. Well,
we all know that Joka, he's not going to be
there in twenty twenty five at the very least. And
then the Jordan Hicks thing came out of pretty much nowhere.
So he goes from well, how's he going to fit
in this room to damn, that's a good pick hopefully.
And I really believe that this guy, he hasn't played
(58:11):
a ton of football in terms of getting opportunity right.
He was a walk on at UCLA. He rode the
Pine and was a special teamer for years, and his
one crack at starting, he lit the world on fire
and did a great job for them. And I expect
him to do the same. And I honestly believe that,
like ten years down the line, we're going to look
back at that pick and say, there's a few that
(58:33):
we really got right. You know, after the first round,
Nick Chubb and I think that a Carson Swesssinger might
not be in the same breath, but you might look
back at it and say, damn, good pick.
Speaker 5 (58:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (58:46):
And the crazy thing is, as you're talking about those guys, Chris,
you say to yourself, boy, they all really need to
be now. I mean, Mason Graham needs to be an
absolute dude up front, like an impact maker right away.
Sweesssinger is going to play. I mean he's good. I mean,
he's gonna play all the time. He's gonna start, He's
gonna be gonna be one of the focal points, you know,
of the defense. And then you stay in that rookie
(59:07):
room because we're waiting on quinch On Judkins. We kind
of all think the offense is going to be kind
of built around his style, and he's obviously not here.
I think about Fannin, like, so you're talking about a
d tackle, a linebacker, and a tight end. And if
going going back before we drafted, would I have thought
those would be the position marks and the importance that
they're going to play on the season.
Speaker 4 (59:26):
Probably not, that.
Speaker 2 (59:27):
Wouldn't have been on my Bengo card, but all three
of them, to me, if we're gonna have success, they've
got to be great and and you're gonna fans are
gonna get their first look at those guys tonight, YEP.
Speaker 8 (59:37):
I mean, I think Harold fan is gonna be terrific
in this offense. I really do. I'm excited in part
because he reminds me like he runs a little bit
the way that Carlos Bierga used to run in the
nineties for the Indians once again. I know another baseball reference.
Speaker 3 (59:53):
Carlos BERGA now you're talking. Now you're talking. My that's
my time frame. Now now I'm dialed in.
Speaker 8 (59:58):
But it's the only it's the only funny running that
I can compare it to, because I'm kind of a
funny runner. I'm more of a wabbler than anything else.
The dudes who have kind of an unorthodox running style,
I'm all in on, Like, I think there's a real
big place in society for people like that. We need
more of them. And so Harold Fan and go do
your thing.
Speaker 4 (01:00:20):
I'll tell you what.
Speaker 2 (01:00:20):
You drop a Cory Snyder reference up on this show.
And I'm just gonna be like Vince Vaughn and say,
kindly leave, like if we get to that point. But
where we're getting at and Allenson and Allen Andy.
Speaker 8 (01:00:32):
Allenson, I saw him, No, my brother met him at
a high school baseball game in California. He looked over
and he goes, he texts me, he goes, I think
Andy Allenson is a parent on the other team. I
was like, you have to go say hi, And sure
enough he introduced himself. Andy Allenson loved every minute of it.
Speaker 3 (01:00:52):
Andy Allenson was on the wrong end and probably the
expected end of There was a when I was a
younger lad there was an A's Indians brawl and Mark
Maguire got the better of Andy Allenson, which is probably
no surprise in retrospect.
Speaker 8 (01:01:08):
Well yes, but it will never never compared to the
pat Corrals attempting the karate kick against Dave Stewart that
ended badly for the then Indians manager. Please go spin
up that clip on YouTube, youngsters.
Speaker 3 (01:01:23):
I certainly well by the way, Dave Stewart was not
a man.
Speaker 4 (01:01:26):
Who goes to Dave Stewart.
Speaker 3 (01:01:28):
Yet somebody, somebody is a glutton for been.
Speaker 4 (01:01:32):
Sure of going at Nolan. Come on, man, you can't
do that.
Speaker 2 (01:01:37):
Yeah, all right, So so we I think we this
is all going to be the the I'm curious from
your vantage point out out on the left coast because
one thing that's been really frustrating and this will be
about Shore tonight. I mean, we can act like it's
about other things, but it's it's mostly gonna be about
Shudre and one thing that's been frustrating Chris for us locally,
and those are like Nathan I in the building obviously,
(01:01:58):
the incredible disconnect. Be queen, what's actually happening with Shador
and what is perceived to be?
Speaker 9 (01:02:06):
What?
Speaker 4 (01:02:07):
How do you think that?
Speaker 2 (01:02:08):
How did it get to this point where there's such
a disconnect, and and what do you make of how
the Browns have handled him?
Speaker 8 (01:02:16):
There's been a disconnect since day one, right, I mean
it started in February when we were all at the combine.
He didn't throw there, but we were all trying to
figure out, Okay, well, there's a ton of teams in
the top ten who need quarterbacks, Like, is somebody gonna
come up and move? Like we feel like cam Ward
is the number one guy. We're pretty sure that's the
(01:02:36):
way it's going to go. But then you know the
Browns are next. Well somebody like do they love Shador?
Do they not? I mean, let's go back seven months,
six months, and remember what happened there. We all there
were there were way more people that thought he was
going to be a top five or top ten pick
(01:02:56):
than thought he had any chance of forget about tumbling
to the fifth round, but getting out of Night one,
he wasn't going to get past Pittsburgh guys. That was
not going to happen, not going to happen, And then
all of a sudden it did. And I remember I
was working the pre draft show with MJD and David Carr,
and David Carr looked at me and he said, Chris,
(01:03:18):
I'm not so sure he goes in the first two nights.
I was like, Dcor, that can't possibly be. He said, no, dude,
I'm serious, And sure enough he went day three. Well,
there's still a lot of people that see him as
the top five pick in the draft. Yeah, and they're
not going to move off of that, and that's their prerogative.
By the way, he might end up being that talented
(01:03:40):
in the NFL. I think it's a lot longer shot,
but it could happen. So that's where it all started.
And then it continued with people who I believe are
doing a disservice, and some of them are on National
TV of saying that the Browns are miss managing him.
(01:04:02):
He's a lottery ticket, guys. It's exactly famous lottery ticket,
but he is a lottery ticket. And if I've done
the research in the last ten drafts, if you include
this one that we just had, that's dating back to
twenty sixteen, there will only be three quarterbacks that were
drafted after the first night that are going to start
(01:04:24):
on opening weekend, assuming everybody's healthy. And the three are
Jalen Hurts taken in round two, and oh, by the way,
drafted after they had just given their starting quarterback one
hundred million dollar deal. So everybody's like, Howie Roseman, what
the hell are you doing? Dak Prescott who fell to
the fourth round. I think he had a legal issue
(01:04:44):
that dropped him to the fourth round, probably would have
been a second rounder. And then Brock Purty, who's the
greatest lottery ticket since Tom Bremer, who was the last
pick in the draft. That's it. That is it. So
to look at him I is anything but that to
me is unhealthy. I'm not telling people how to look
(01:05:05):
at it, but it's that's the way I see it. So, yes,
it makes sense that he's fourth on the depth chart.
Speaker 3 (01:05:11):
Yeah, yeah, listen, you're right about it. And we went
through it last year. Of the teams that went to
the playoffs, the only team that went to the playoffs
that didn't have a quarterback drafted in the first round
was the Super Bowl champions Philadelphia Eagles. In terms of
and the Steelers last year World rust in the third.
But and then maybe I was talking maybe it was
the top twelve offenses. Do you remember what it was?
But maybe it was top twelve offenses in the NFL.
(01:05:33):
It was all first rounds except for Hurts, and six
of them were first or second overall picks. That's what
it was, top offense, right right, It's yeah, that's that's
the league. And I guess Russ if he starts for
the Giants technically would count as well. But it yeah,
it is a lotder ticket. And that's the exact verbiage
we've used on this program. I think that the disconnect
for a lot of people is that when you watch
(01:05:55):
him solely on tape, there was not a single person
that we spoke to at the combine, and we talked
to everybody at the combine who does this for a
living that didn't view him as a first story, second
round prospect, and yet he goes in the fifth round.
So that tells you that there are things that are
not readily apparent on tape that caused him to slide
the way that he did. And so that's why we've
(01:06:15):
heard he's got a bigger learning curve than Dylan Gabriel
or maybe other rookies that are coming into the league.
There's no doubt his tape at Colorado was good, very
accurate with the football. Yes, you can say he held
onto the ball too long, tried to make plays, was
behind a bad offensive line, took too many sacks. Those
are things that you want to see tonight that he's
you know, made adjustments on absolutely, but it's going to
(01:06:36):
be all the things that we don't see that are
going to have a bigger say on whether or not
Shad Door Sanders is able to become a starting quarterback
and a successful one in the NFL. Then really what
it is that we do see now, you would imagine
that what we don't see will manifest itself in what
we do see. But there's a lot that goes into
playing that position. And I think that that's kind of
the disservice that's been done is that he was you know,
(01:06:59):
you had ranting and raving throughout this draft of what
a Shaka was, and people who are very well respected,
right mel Kiper was beside himself as this was unfolding.
He was Bucky Brooks's top quarterback in this draft, So
you have a lot of people that were surprised, and
it's created kind of and he's already a ready made
superstar in many ways that it's created. Probably the most
(01:07:19):
unique there was a movie. They said, it's it's a
perfect storm. It's the perfect storm of everything in this
society coming to together for a preseason football game.
Speaker 8 (01:07:32):
So let's just look at it and accept it for
what it should be tonight.
Speaker 3 (01:07:37):
Yep.
Speaker 8 (01:07:37):
And that is the celebration of a kid who has
worked hard to get to where he is. He's going
to get an opportunity. I don't know, regardless of how
he plays, how much it moves, what the Browns think
of him, I don't know. You would think you would
presume that if he lights it up, if he throws
for two hundred and eighty yards and a couple of
(01:07:59):
touch downs and only gets sacked once and plays a
clean game, well we know what everybody's going to be
talking about Monday nationally. But it's so interesting what we
think is noisy and what people inside of a professional
sports organization think is noisy. It's really interesting because we think,
(01:08:20):
oh my god, here's the title wave that's coming with
what you drafted shador standers into a team that's looking
for a franchise quarterback. They have to hear it. I
don't think they do. I don't think I think they
are have tunnel vision on what their process is. And
we can sit here and criticize the process because we
can see what has gone right and what's gone wrong
(01:08:42):
on the field, so people can have an opinion about that.
But about the stuff that we can't see, Nathan, that
you just talked about, that stuff is so important and
when it comes out of the mouths of people who
have played the sport, to me, that's borderline irresponsible because
then you're throwing out a new narrative out there that
you know is not one percent accurate. Yeah, and that's
(01:09:04):
a tough one. It's more than just an opinion. Then
you're starting to dismiss some things they are facts, and
that's a tough.
Speaker 2 (01:09:12):
Go buddy, enjoy it. Gonna be a fun one tonight.
Look forward to to hearing you as we all watched,
and I thank you for your time as always.
Speaker 8 (01:09:20):
Pal all right, I always appreciate it. And Nathan, you're
gonna have to even though it's not your room, it's
Gibbie's room. You're the one who's gonna have to leave
the tip because your last one out.
Speaker 3 (01:09:31):
And we know Dan I will say, I do see,
I see a bill. I do see a bill on
his desk, So good job, Gibbey.
Speaker 8 (01:09:38):
Well hold on, of course, if it's a single, then
we know where it was he mistakenly left.
Speaker 2 (01:09:43):
Oh god, oh God, Rose just a side swipe of
Gibby when he's unbelievable.
Speaker 4 (01:09:52):
We're for it, for it.
Speaker 8 (01:09:53):
I'm sure, I'm sure I'll be getting a text for
that one. All right, buddy boy.

Browns Andrew Siciliano breaking down a conversation with tight end
Harold Fannin junior before his first NFL game.
Speaker 10 (01:11:12):
Right, Harold Fannin, you got real football, like a couple
weeks of training camp in the books. You guys got
the joint practice. But now on the eve of your
very first NFL game, how are you feeling? How excited
are you for this?
Speaker 7 (01:11:24):
Uh?
Speaker 9 (01:11:25):
I mean I'm feeling great, you know what I mean,
obviously very excited to get out there and go out
there and you know, just play football again.
Speaker 5 (01:11:31):
And uh yeah, I mean that's really it's.
Speaker 6 (01:11:33):
Really exciting, family, coming, friends, anyone.
Speaker 10 (01:11:35):
I know it's the road and the rain in Charlotte
in the preseason, not a home game, but anyone gonna
be in the stands.
Speaker 5 (01:11:40):
Uh No, but I know people are gonna be watching.
Speaker 10 (01:11:42):
So yeah, have you thought about I mean, I'm guessing
you did as a little kid, but now the moment's here.
Have you thought about like running out of the tunnel
for the very first time as an NFL player.
Speaker 9 (01:11:52):
No, I never really thought that far, but obviously I'm here,
so you know, obviously now I'm thinking about it.
Speaker 5 (01:11:56):
Yeah, it's definitely gonna be a dope.
Speaker 6 (01:11:58):
Experience, anxious nerves at all. Man, I'm just ready to go.
Speaker 9 (01:12:02):
Man, it's been a long wait, you know what I mean, Camp,
I'm just ready to go.
Speaker 10 (01:12:06):
Did you get a little taste of it with the
joint practice, I mean, did that feel like kind of
a little bit of a move up in weight class
at all?
Speaker 9 (01:12:15):
No?
Speaker 5 (01:12:15):
I mean it just felt like practice. You know.
Speaker 9 (01:12:16):
Obviously a game day, you know everybody's gonna be turned
up way more.
Speaker 3 (01:12:20):
So.
Speaker 5 (01:12:20):
Yeah, just ready for that.
Speaker 10 (01:12:22):
So everyone always says they have their like welcome to
the NFL.
Speaker 6 (01:12:27):
Wow moment.
Speaker 9 (01:12:29):
Have you had that moment yet Oh where I was
just like, wow, not yet, you know what I mean.
Speaker 5 (01:12:36):
Hopefully I don't have it this game either.
Speaker 6 (01:12:38):
You'll know it when you see it, right, Yeah, most definitely.
Speaker 5 (01:12:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (01:12:41):
Okay, So as we get ready for this game, have
you any idea how much you're gonna play?
Speaker 9 (01:12:48):
Yeah, I mean, obviously we're gonna rotate and things like that,
you know, get all the guys in rep.
Speaker 10 (01:12:52):
But yeah, I'm definitely playing this game. Yeah, okay, good,
we're looking forward to that. Shitt Or is playing as well,
same rookie class here. Have you have you thought about
what that moment's going to be like for him? Pretty
cool rookie quarterback getting his first start on the road
in the preseason.
Speaker 9 (01:13:07):
Yeah, I mean for him, I mean, that's definitely gonna
be dope, you know what I mean. Everybody asking all
the questions and you know, I guess tomorrow would be
the time for him to prove it.
Speaker 10 (01:13:15):
You know, are you getting that like from friends and
family like what's the guy like?
Speaker 8 (01:13:20):
Uh?
Speaker 9 (01:13:20):
Yeah, I mean everybody you always want to know, you
know about the quarterbacks of the Browns. But I mean
tomorrow's just shot man, you know, I'm you know, I'm
behind him, obviously I'll be playing with them.
Speaker 5 (01:13:29):
So we're gonna show it's.
Speaker 10 (01:13:31):
A shot for everybody here. Let's go back to the draft.
Andrew Berry said, do you play chess.
Speaker 5 (01:13:35):
By the way? No? No, no, no.
Speaker 10 (01:13:38):
Well, Andrew Berry called you the queen on the chessboard,
Like the queen is the most powerful player on the board.
Go left, can go right and go up, can go down,
could go diagonally, and and he said that you're the
queen of the chessboard because hey, you could stand up,
you can go out wide, you could put your hand down,
we could put you in the backfield, you could run
the jet suite.
Speaker 6 (01:13:57):
You could do almost anything.
Speaker 10 (01:13:59):
What's that like when you get out there during training
camp and you don't just have like a traditional tight
end role to learn, You're you're kind of learning every
bit of the offense.
Speaker 9 (01:14:11):
I guess, just like I guess like learning the playbook
might be a little bit distressful. But like when you
just when whenever we just hide the ball we play,
I mean, it's just football. At the end of the day,
I say, I guess I'm gonna have to, you know,
stay a little longer, get some extra work done. You know,
just actually know what I'm doing, how they want it done.
Things like that, but yeah, it's just football.
Speaker 6 (01:14:30):
The other thing he said is people just.
Speaker 10 (01:14:33):
Assume you're not a blocker because you've got these big stats.
But most people say when they look at tight ends
coming out of the draft that they want to see
a willingness to block, right Like, as long as the
guy's able to as I say, like put his face
in the fan, like, be willing to block, then we
can work with that player coming into the NFL.
Speaker 6 (01:14:54):
How do you feel your blocking game is going?
Speaker 9 (01:14:57):
I feel like you described it perfect, you know what
I mean. It ain't pretty, but you know, obviously I
just got to get the job done, you know whatever,
to you know, help the team to win.
Speaker 6 (01:15:04):
I mean you have to line up against Miles sometimes
in practice.
Speaker 5 (01:15:06):
Right yeah?
Speaker 8 (01:15:09):
Sometimes?
Speaker 5 (01:15:10):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (01:15:11):
What's that been?
Speaker 5 (01:15:12):
Like?
Speaker 9 (01:15:13):
Oh?
Speaker 7 (01:15:13):
Man?
Speaker 9 (01:15:14):
You know, I just sometimes you sitting there like, man,
I hope he dropped back in coverage, which he never does.
But it's definitely a learning experience. And obviously he's better
than me because you know how great he is at.
Speaker 5 (01:15:25):
What are he doing?
Speaker 10 (01:15:26):
But you know you're not the only one, right Like
if he beats you, like Dwan's got to deal with it.
Joint practice yesterday, Iky Aquanu, the Panthers left tackle who's
a former top ten pick, Like there was one move
or like Miles, Miles kind of did a euro step
on him and the dude just whiffed.
Speaker 6 (01:15:44):
So, I mean, you're not alone.
Speaker 9 (01:15:46):
In this most definitely not. I mean everybody kind of
just got to experience it. But uh yeah, man, well Miles,
you're not really thinking about you know, you know, you
just really think I just need a hold up for
this amount of time. You're not really thinking about blocking
or dominating them in a pass or anything like that.
Speaker 10 (01:16:02):
Harold Fanner, what said the tight end room been like
for you? What's David njok who taught you? If anything
so far? He's he's got a big personality.
Speaker 9 (01:16:11):
Yeah, I feel like just David h I definitely say
like it's or around him. I definitely just he just
kind of got to just want you to show your personality,
you know, just be yourself really and you know, obviously
working with them, you know, being on the field with
them is you know, it's been awesome. Obviously got a
lot of experience, so just trying to take you know,
how he does his game and try.
Speaker 5 (01:16:30):
To kind of put that into my game.
Speaker 10 (01:16:32):
You're not gonna totally walk into his shoes, so to speak,
like you're gonna keep your shirt on walking around the building.
Speaker 8 (01:16:38):
Right.
Speaker 9 (01:16:38):
Yeah, Yeah, not not that far. Just saw a little
bit more personality, not that much.
Speaker 10 (01:16:43):
We'll hope to see some of that personality. Hope to
see maybe even in the end zone as well. Harold
fan in good luck in your NFL debut for the
Browns against the Carolina Panthers.
Speaker 5 (01:16:53):
Yep, thank you, appreciate you are there.
Speaker 2 (01:16:55):
You go, Andrew with Harold Fannon Junior who will make
his debut tonight as well.
Speaker 5 (01:17:00):
Well.
Speaker 2 (01:17:00):
Obviously the headliner issued Or Sanders, who will debut tonight.
Bernie Cozar knows a little bit about debuts at the
quarterback position.

He is the iconic Bernie Cozart and he joins us there.
This is a fifth round pick. He's gonna get a
ton of plays. We heard from the Coaching Show last
night from Kevin Stefanski fifty reps or so for Shador.
The ball has been given to him. Bernie, you one opportunity,
I would say, Shaudor has one tonight, my friend.
Speaker 11 (01:18:23):
Yeah, I'd like to sit here today talking to you
like this mature wise beecheran quarterback, But right now I
feel like that little boy fanboy looking forward for the
first preseason game. That's for a guy who played twelve
years in the NFL. I'm almost embarrassed to be saying
(01:18:43):
how excited I am for a preseason game, but really,
deep down, at the end of the day, I really am,
and for Shadoor to get this opportunity tonight, I'm really
looking forward to this. And Bo earlier in the week
when we were together talking about me, you and Nathan,
we are really concerned about horrible weather today and it
(01:19:04):
hasn't been optimal the last couple of days. But it
looks like it's a positive weather day to day with
not a ton of rain and win, so it'll be
a I believe it's kind of a fair representation for
Shudre to kind of showcases resourcefulness that we've been seeing
in training camp so far.
Speaker 8 (01:19:21):
I'm really looking forward to it.
Speaker 3 (01:19:23):
All right, Bernie, take us into kind of your mind.
What is it that you're watching for. Let's start pre snap.
What are you going to be watching for for Shador
Sanders pre snap tonight?
Speaker 11 (01:19:35):
So watching for the traditional things you would expect of
confidence control, being on time, not the pre snap penalties,
and not being overly rushed. But a lot of that
goes about saying and maybe a big expectation knowing how
in a preseason game without the starters, substitutions in any
(01:19:59):
situation and even with experience, is a challenge. So that's
that in itself is a challenge for it. But I'm
kind of looking for, really how the evolution of his
game of trying.
Speaker 8 (01:20:14):
Not to do too much today.
Speaker 11 (01:20:15):
I really like how in training camp he's been taken
with the coach to Fansky system, is giving and playing
within himself.
Speaker 8 (01:20:23):
And I.
Speaker 11 (01:20:25):
Besides kind of wanting to see that type of maturity
and kind of confidence that he's showing in practice, I'd
also like to see him kind of have that transfer
obviously to the game tonight.
Speaker 2 (01:20:37):
Bernie, as you've observed all of uh, you know, quite
most of his reps in training camp, what do you
think Kevin and Kevin said last night in the coach
we're going to put him in positions as many as
we can. What what what? What does he What would
that be? How would you define that like positions? What's
what can Kevin do offensively based on what you've seen
shudor do in camp that will lead to success tonight?
Speaker 11 (01:21:01):
Great question, and that's where there's a lot you could
do in preseason football at the end of my career,
I was a little bit challenged in my athletic ability
and my ability to be a top tier quarterback. So
I was able to really manipulate my plays and manipulate
my personnel groups in my last two years in the
league to actually fool people to be one of the
(01:21:23):
highest rated preseason quarterbacks. So you can do certain strategic
things within your play calling to really help things out
in the play action game, in the screen game, and
in the bootleg game. Those type things tend to work
really good in preseason anyways. That's a staple part of
(01:21:43):
our system. So yes, he could. We could almost fabricate
him looking good with those type plays that I bluntly
was able to do for myself at the end of
my career. Unfortunately, though, that sometimes doesn't give you the
best chance to see who you are. And maybe we
don't want to be giving up some of our easy
(01:22:04):
plays because Cincinnati will be looking at this into three
game breakdown, So there's a kind of a chess match
of what plays are we showing because we want to
see Shador look good, But we don't want to give
up all of our easy good plays because we want
to save those for the Bengals and Trey Hendrickson and
Al Golden their new defensive coordinator. So it's a little
(01:22:26):
bit of a balance, and I'm really looking forward to
seeing how coach Safanski calls the plays for Shador, and
I'm also looking forward to seeing what personnel guys we
have with them, because the Panthers are playing their starters early.
Speaker 3 (01:22:43):
Bernie, and they will play those starters, and so those
are going to be very valuable reps, I think early
for this Browns offense and defense going against the starters
of the Carolina Panthers. So I asked earlier about pre
snap for Sudar. Post snap, what tells you that he's
made progress and improved on some of the things that
the Browns want to see him work on and that
he wants to work on.
Speaker 11 (01:23:04):
So post snap is to me the really the differentiator
of guys that you know are going to make it
long run and eventually I believe all the quarterbacks be
able to do that pre snap stuff no problem. But
I'm absolutely excited. And it's not for fans, even myself
(01:23:25):
not to panic if it doesn't materialize. But the reason
why I'd like Shador Sanders coming out of or going
into the draft and come watching him last year, Nathan,
me and you talked about it on air or on air,
and privately, I love his confidence and his hips and feet,
(01:23:47):
how calm they are right before he's about to get
wiped out and there's no threat of quarterbacking that accept
in live situations. So this live situation, he's going to
show him great maturity and present and confidence in the
training camp pocket. He showed that awesomely in the college pocket.
(01:24:07):
I love to see that tonight in an NFL preseason pocket,
when that that that point two second throw right before
you're about to get hit. Love him to see him
make those throws like he's been throwing and then come
out of this game all of our starters and our
guys with no injuries.
Speaker 2 (01:24:27):
Bernie, what what do you about your preseason debut?
Speaker 11 (01:24:34):
God, if that I thought I was in Buffalo and
I was running a very similar offense to what I
believe Schador and the Browns would be running this year.
I was not smart enough at that point in my
life to actually realize how blessed I was that that
was helping me. Okay, and it did help me, And
again I played it all these cool games, and I
(01:24:56):
got so excited.
Speaker 6 (01:24:58):
I had it.
Speaker 11 (01:24:58):
I did a bootleg to hit a first down at
the end of my first preseason game against the Buffalo Bills,
and I thought I'd won the super Bowl, and the
awesome great Robert Jackson came up to me and goes, hey, bro,
you're pretty excited for a preseason game. And I'm like,
damn it. My coach told me to act like I
did that before. Coach, I'm like trying to pretend to
(01:25:22):
it's cool Miami quarterback and I'm jumping around like a
little boy because I ran a bootleg and hit a
flat for four yards, So I see. So I'd like
to see caution, Shador and everybody. I mean, it's exciting,
enjoy it. You will remember this forever, you know, or
until the dementia hits you. So I go for it
that I and embrace the moments.
Speaker 2 (01:25:44):
Yeah, it's it's it's going to be a special moment, buddy.
It's it's always a pleasure to have your perspective. Thank
you so much for your time, and we'll all be
watching tonight to see how all of this goes.
Speaker 4 (01:25:53):
Thanks buddy, look looking forward to you matter.
Speaker 11 (01:25:56):
Go Browns.
Speaker 2 (01:25:58):
There he goes, the great Bernie Cozar joining us on
the Twisted Tea Hard Iced Tea Hotline, official sponsor of
your Cleveland Browns. Keep it Twisted, Cleveland, our final keys
for tonight's game coming up next, you listen to Cleveland
Browns Daily on eight fifty ESPN Cleveland.
Speaker 1 (01:26:19):
You're listening to Cleveland Browns Daily on eight fifty ESPN Cleveland,
presented by bally Bet sports Book, an official sports betting
partner of your Cleveland Browns. Please bet responsibly, all.
Speaker 2 (01:26:40):
Right, Welcome back in Cleveland Browns Daily presented by ballely
Bet sports Book, official sports betting partner of your Cleveland Browns. Look,
this is uh, this is the Shadoor Sanders debut.
Speaker 4 (01:26:50):
It's uh.
Speaker 2 (01:26:51):
He's gonna get a lot of reps in this one.
There's a lot to look forward to. I think it's
as unique a preseason game as you're ever gonna ever
gonna have. And to to steal Z's analogy from earlier,
it's a perfect storm that's allowed us to get to
this point. You've seen every snap. You've seen it all, buddy,
all preseason long, all training camp long. What are you
looking for tonight? Offensively from the Cleveland Browns and specifically
(01:27:13):
from Shure Sanders.
Speaker 3 (01:27:15):
Well, I just want to see him get in and
out of the huddle quickly. I want to see him
have the command of the play calls in the huddle,
being able to get that verbiage out to his team,
get everybody lined up, and so that you're not up
against the clock, so he's got some opportunity to assess
the defense, assess what's out in front of him. You know,
it's preseason, should be pretty vanilla, but I think that's
first and foremost the operation of it. So I don't
want to see pre snap penalties. I don't want to see,
(01:27:37):
you know, scrambling to get the playoff before zero, having
to burn time outs. I want to see him get
the plays in, get them out to his teammates, and
go quickly and efficiently, and then post snap, you know,
I want him be decisive with the football. I want
him to read it the way that he's been taught
to read it. You know, if you get into those
boot level concepts, read it top down, don't read it
(01:27:58):
down up. Read it top down, because if that vertical
is there, you take it. But if not, then you
come down and you can get rid of the football.
There was a play in the joint practice ins Carolina
where he boot it out and I think he had
Luke Floria wide open on the corner. He threw it
underneath one, which is still positive play. But if you
read that top down, that's a shop play. That's an
opportunity there. I want him to be decisive with the football.
(01:28:19):
Don't try to hold onto it too long, don't try
to play hero ball. You know, we heard the stat
earlier that Chris No doubt got from Pittsburgh Peepa about
Aaron Rodgers being, you know, leading the league and throwing
the ball away every year and living to play another day.
We don't want to see him take a lot of sacks.
You want to see him be decisive. You want the
ball come out quickly, on time, in rhythm. You'd like
(01:28:40):
to see us get that run game going. Because I
really do think one thing that'll be interesting, how does
he do with some of that hard back to the
defense play action, not just the boots, but that hard
play action that Joe Flacco is so good at and
that you really help, you know, suck those linebackers down
so you can hit the ball over the top of them.
So it's really about that. We always a very accurate
(01:29:00):
thrower when everything's in a rhythm. I want to see,
you know, how does his velocity hold up in the
intermediate You know, that's one of the questions that some
people did have about him. And you know this NFL windows,
these guys are going to be playing all out. I
haven't seen a problem with tho. I see a guy
who's incredibly accurate with the football, has more than enough arm.
But you want to see that in the game. You know,
sometimes in games you can revert to hap it's like
(01:29:22):
throwing it off your back foot or not stepping into
the throw and really ripping it. So I want to
see him out there in this game situation. Do those
things just be comfortable? There could be some sex. You know, listen,
you get through backup offensive lines in the NFL. They're
not that good. That's a problem around the league. But
if he can be decisive what the football, be accurate
with it, play within the structure, and operate this offense,
(01:29:45):
you know, I think he's going to do well and
it's going to be a lot of fun to watch.
Speaker 2 (01:29:48):
Yeah, it's he's going to be put in a position
to succeed, and I think he's ready for it. Some
comments from Dion had an availability out of Colorado today
and just that he's they've already talked three times. Like
it's got to be a crazy thing for him. This's
the first game that he's played. I don't even know
since when where his dad's not the coach. I mean,
(01:30:08):
it's his entire college career, most of his youth career,
Like Dion coached him like this, this is new territory
for him too. So it's a surreal thing that's going
to happen tonight. It's it's really really cool. Beyond that though, there,
you're gonna get a look at all of these rookies.
You're gonna need to see some depth guys. With the
injury to mj Emerson, You're curious to see what some
of those corners. We need those guys in a very
(01:30:29):
big way. You're gonna get to see Fannin, Mason Graham
for a little bit. All of those things exciting, Hi, buddy,
have a great call, my friend.
Speaker 4 (01:30:38):
I know that you will look forward to it.
Speaker 2 (01:30:42):
Here is your lineup tonight three right now, in fact,
the Browns game day with Ken and Gerard, then five
o'clock Browns Kickoff Show with Andy and Tayvas, and then
at seven o'clock get His Kickoff from Bank of America
