Speaker 1 (00:09):
Welcome to the From the Podium podcast, where we feature
all of our daily press conferences rolled into one podcast
to help you get ready for the twenty twenty five
regular season. I'm Brock Dannahy and on today's episode, you'll
hear from Joel Botonio, Denzel Ward, Miles Garrett, and Kevin
Stefanski on day one of practice. First up is pro
(00:31):
bulguard Joel Botonio, who previews the Browns quarterback competition ahead
of training camp.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
See Joe, after thinking about whether or not you come
back to this year.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
Where are your motions kind of starting training caper from? Yeah,
I'm excited. I think we're in a good place. The
team seems to energize and ready to roll. But personally,
I'm excited. I feel really good physically right now. You know,
We'll see how it feels a couple of weeks, but
right now I feel good and read ready to go.
Speaker 4 (00:56):
Joe, You've been through so many different camps. Which do
you think the personality of this cham and just manancity
could get from previousology.
Speaker 3 (01:06):
Yeah, we talked about intensity, we talked about energy, We've
talked about we gotta start fast and we gotta you know,
keep building up. We have a couple of joint practices.
Those always bring up to intensity. So I think I
think we're you know, we're gonna have a high intensity
you know, physical training camp.
Speaker 5 (01:21):
Is there a one camp that sticks out that would
have more high intensity and more physical than any.
Speaker 6 (01:28):
Of you can remember?
Speaker 7 (01:29):
I think early in my career, I didn't. You don't
know what you don't know.
Speaker 3 (01:31):
So like my first and second year with Pedtin, there
was a lot more allowed, like you could do half
line still, you could do like inside run tackling drills
and stuff, and so those always felt a little bit
more physical. Then we've kind of progressed to just I
think that's more of an NFL wide thing though.
Speaker 8 (01:46):
Since veterans don't play a lot in free season games,
how much to do those two joint practice that's helped
in terms of getting ready.
Speaker 7 (01:54):
Yeah, there's a positive to them.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
I think if you have a good team that you're
going against and you you get controlled red you know,
in a cold should environment, sometimes they get a little
out of place, especially if it goes more than a
day or two, because you know, one team wins the
first day and the next team comes back angry because
they got yelled at the night before. If you have
good practices, it can be very helpful.
Speaker 9 (02:13):
Joe, can you guys just right off last year as.
Speaker 6 (02:17):
Nothing been right?
Speaker 7 (02:19):
It's part of that.
Speaker 3 (02:20):
But I don't think I think we have to take
some accountability. Like we were out there playing games. I
know we weren't in a perfect position all the time,
but at some point, you know, as a player, I
think everybody looked in the mirror and was like, what
can I do to be better? Not just oh, last year,
we you know, we didn't like the play calls. We
didn't like this. It was you know, you have to
you know, take a step and try and improve yourself
a little bitterly.
Speaker 10 (02:40):
To every season, believing that you guys have a legitimate
chance to you know, to make the playoffs and get
yourself just you know, really pumped and hyped out for
that type of mind crowd.
Speaker 7 (02:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
I mean I'm personally forever optimistic. That's just how I've
been my whole life. But I think, honestly, truly, every
NFL team goes into training camp, you know, knowing they
have a chance. Like we have a majority of our
team back from two years ago. We went you know,
eleven and six and made the playoffs and made a run.
We do know we have to play better and we
(03:11):
have to improve and do some things right. But I
think the mentality of the team and the work we're
going to try and do gives us that optimism. Why
do they think expectations are so low the team nash
As we played very bad last year. We were, you know, disappointing.
I think everybody was disappointed. You know, I went on
sixteen one to fifteen three and thirteen. I feel like
(03:32):
that was probably my most disappointed year just with what
we had done the year before and the players we had,
so it was very frustrating. So I understand why the
outside world wants to write us off because it makes
sense on you know, from what you were looking at
the year before.
Speaker 4 (03:48):
That a good place for the team to be.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
Yeah, it's fine, We're gonna try and not look at
the noise, you know. I think we're going to try
and work, and I think guys have chips on their
shoulder and everybody's motivated differently, but I think there's a uh,
you know, positive and motivation for our guys.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
This quarterback.
Speaker 7 (04:08):
And what was the question.
Speaker 4 (04:12):
Who orges as you're study.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
Yeah, it's a big thing. I mean, the starting quarterback
NML is probably the most important position. So I know
they're gonna have a good battle. I know the guys
are ready to work and it's gonna be a good competition. So, uh,
you know, I'll look forward to whenever it's announced for.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
Guys talking about what has gone on or what's going on.
Speaker 7 (04:32):
Yeah, there's been some there's been some talks for sure.
I mean, is.
Speaker 2 (04:35):
It something that you feel bodify, that you feel like
you resolved.
Speaker 7 (04:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
I mean we're definitely in a vulnerable position right now
as NFL p A, and it feels like there's some
you know, internal breakage inside the nfl PA that is
causing some rift. So it's something we definitely need to
get figured out and and try and put a stop
to it and you know, catch our breast and get.
Speaker 7 (05:01):
Back to it.
Speaker 4 (05:02):
If you've been as with this team.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
Yeah, I'm I'm the second alternate. Shelby Harris is the
main alternate, so he's our voting rep. But I've been
on some calls.
Speaker 7 (05:11):
Obviously.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
I'm pretty close friends with J. C. Tretder, so I
have some you know, just some discussions with him in
the in the whole situation, and there's probably some things
I can't say or won't say, but you know, it's
it's the players are trying to, you know, figure out
a way to get us in the right position. And obviously,
you know, with the whole Boyd situation and what kind
of went down, it uh puts a you know, a
(05:34):
bad light on on the whole nfl PA. But I
think the players that are on the executive committee that
are voting reps are trying to do the right thing
now and find you know, a good interim candidate.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
Joe, does this quarterback competition feel different? I mean, you've
been too plenty of plenty of them. Does this feel different?
Because of the dynamics? There's four guys, two of more
veterans tuber rookies. Did you approach at day one?
Speaker 3 (05:57):
Yeah, it's it's four quarterbacks that you know, everybody's trying
to compete and play, and it's it's a big number
of guys with limited reps, you know what I mean,
So it'll be interesting to see how they do it. Luckily,
you have a guy like Joe that has some experience
and has some playing time, and Kenny's played a lot.
I think it's just gonna be whoever's you know, most
comfortable in the system and can make thrills. I think
all of them are talented, you know, and all of
(06:18):
them have that ability to be a starting quarterback in
this league, maybe not today but in the future.
Speaker 7 (06:22):
So it'll be a good competition.
Speaker 4 (06:24):
After atas and in mini camp.
Speaker 3 (06:27):
How do you feel about the day and Joe to
play about the count, I think he's a lot more
comfortable than he was when he was asked to play
last year. I think you see, he's a guy you
see Flash with all the time. There's there's some great
plays and for him, we've talked about just the consistency.
He's obviously worked to get his body in better shape
and he's coming into camp in good shape, and it's
(06:47):
just gonna be a consistency play to play battle, you know,
guess scope against guy like Miles in practice and there's
gonna be some wins and some losses, and it's just
having that mental attitude to come back and try and
get better from him.
Speaker 4 (06:58):
Tell me what given Assis, if the lands so big?
Speaker 7 (07:02):
Playing more or that, Yeah, it helps.
Speaker 3 (07:05):
Mean if you can get to your spot and you
have those long arms, like it takes a lot to
run around the guy or run through the guy. You know,
sizes is a very strong trait. And I think when
he's focused and he gets to a spot and he
plays long like, he's a very good tackle.
Speaker 2 (07:21):
How much time did you think about this could be
my last train?
Speaker 7 (07:25):
Hi, not too much.
Speaker 3 (07:27):
I'm really trying to live in the moment and just
you know, one practice, one meeting everything at a time.
There'll be time, you know, when it's over to think
about that stuff.
Speaker 2 (07:37):
When you showed up last year, did that ender your
mind that it could be the last one?
Speaker 11 (07:41):
No?
Speaker 7 (07:41):
Okay, I did not think about that.
Speaker 12 (07:43):
Getting back to the you know, emphasis on the one game,
getting fall out quickly just you know, helps someone who's
been walking around as long as you have.
Speaker 9 (07:54):
Just how excited are you to get back to that
type of a scheme that really to work for a
couple of years.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
Yeah, it's old Lineman's you know, dream offense in that
sense like you know, you hey, we're gonna run the ball,
we're gonna play action. You know, we're gonna take our
shots when they're there, quick passing game. But it's something
we have to make happen. Like it's great to say,
but if the running game's not working, if you're not
you know, converting those runs in the play action alsoff,
it turns into a drop that game. Like, no matter
(08:22):
what you say, if you're down by two touchdowns early,
you're gonna start dropping back. So it's something that we
have to make come true. But we are excited with
the foundation up.
Speaker 1 (08:31):
Second Pro Bowl cornerback Denzel Ward says the success of
the Browns this year hinges on the defensive side of
the ball.
Speaker 6 (08:39):
How does this defense get back to where it was
two seasons two?
Speaker 13 (08:42):
Yeah, just consistency, coming in, working hard again on the
same page with things, and just being out here and
getting those reps out here with the guys and just
knowing that that's our goal to be the best defense
in the NFL and we gonna get there. We're gonna
make it happen.
Speaker 6 (08:57):
What do you think happened last year?
Speaker 2 (08:58):
I mean, you guys weren't weren't bad last year?
Speaker 7 (09:00):
Up, you were just warned what you were here before.
Speaker 13 (09:02):
It's different, Mm what was different?
Speaker 11 (09:05):
Uh?
Speaker 9 (09:06):
I don't know.
Speaker 13 (09:06):
That's that's that's kind of tough. I mean, like I said,
we weren't bad, but it's tough holding that number one spot.
So I think we just gotta come back with a
uh hungrier mindset and hungrier and uh just to get
back to that number one spot. And uh, I think
we got the guys capable of doing that.
Speaker 14 (09:21):
Tactually not ramping up anything, but what is the tone
that needs to be set today?
Speaker 13 (09:25):
Specifically a come out here, go as hard as you can,
push it to the limit, run fast, you know, we
it's our first day, so mistakes might happen, but uh,
just continue to work hard and and push through it.
Speaker 14 (09:35):
Is there some of that maybe lingering chip on the
shoulder disappointment from last yeason that you.
Speaker 4 (09:39):
Guys can take into this?
Speaker 7 (09:41):
Uh?
Speaker 13 (09:41):
Yeah, I guess like last year's last year, we on
a whole new year, new team, knew everything, So we
come up with a with a hungry mindset, We ready
to get to it.
Speaker 6 (09:48):
How you going off fourteen.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
Last year after anything, the playoffs a year before.
Speaker 15 (09:52):
It's kind of what's being done inside the ability to
get back playing me anywhere?
Speaker 13 (09:57):
Yeah, I think it's the mindset really, like I keep
uh speaking on us, a mindset like we all hungry,
we all wanna get to it and were just being
intentional about all our things that we're doing in the
building and the meetings and uh things that's being said.
And then I definitely when we come out here on
the practice field, everything's gonna be intentional kind of going
off that to you.
Speaker 15 (10:15):
Know, the mental dream that comes about three fourteen teams
and going into a new shape.
Speaker 9 (10:19):
Off, how do you rebound for you.
Speaker 4 (10:21):
Know what happened last year?
Speaker 13 (10:23):
We we we zero and zero right now, so it
only not three and fourteen.
Speaker 6 (10:26):
We zero and zero.
Speaker 13 (10:27):
You know, everybody on the s clean slate, and uh
this is new year, man. So like I said, we
ready to get to it. Uh we go work hard
to win some games for the city, and uh we
gonna make it happen.
Speaker 8 (10:37):
D Do you feel like any success you guys have
this year is gonna start with you guys on the
defensive side.
Speaker 13 (10:41):
Definitely, That's definitely our mindset. We feel we push this
team and uh we take a lot of product on
the defensive side of starting fast and and being the
the juice and and bringing helping our offense side and
special teams and so, uh we're gonna take a lot
of produe in that and trying to start fast for
these guys and help them as best way as we can.
Speaker 4 (10:57):
And then when.
Speaker 15 (11:00):
In the springs, four of them off right as camps
here and it begets like, where where do you think
things stand with that? And I imagine you're.
Speaker 13 (11:08):
You're goal there, Oh yeah, God, my goal is definitely
still the same to pick those guys off. But uh yeah,
we just gotta wait and see. Really, you know, I
think the best guy's gonna be out there. Yeah, and
so we gotta get more reps out here, see see
who's doing what and compete. I think that's the biggest thing,
going out there and competing. And those guys are gonna compete. Uh,
they're gonna make us better. We're gonna make them better.
Speaker 15 (11:27):
I mean as a DV if it's that kind of
ramp up the energy free like there just hasn't been
an open any competition.
Speaker 7 (11:33):
Or yeah, so long does that energy?
Speaker 11 (11:35):
Nah?
Speaker 13 (11:35):
I think it definitely does. Definitely ramps up their energy, uh,
I know, ramps out the energy for those guys. And
and the competition, I think it's a it's a good,
great competition and looking forward to seeing it.
Speaker 16 (11:44):
Things will Harden kind of put himself in matter two
years ago and particular as a step back this past year.
Just what do you notice about how he's sort of approach.
Speaker 6 (11:53):
You can see, especially knowing you just go through.
Speaker 4 (11:55):
That last year.
Speaker 13 (11:55):
Yeah, man, I think he's hungry. He's hungry this year.
He's been working every day and uh, just his mindset
coming in. He's what he wants to be the best.
He wants to get back to playing that great ball
that he was playing, and uh he's he's gonna get there.
So y just continue to taking the day at a
time and then working hard and coming out here on
the field and doing what we're supposed to do.
Speaker 14 (12:11):
Uh m Ja's obviously probably one of them. But who
are some of the guys on your side of the
ball that you're looking for as a leader to take
a lead or continue their development from the spring, Guys
that you think.
Speaker 13 (12:20):
Are gonna have a stand up like a leader from
a leader person leadership position, or players seeing like as
it's as their teammate.
Speaker 15 (12:27):
What what are you wanting to get out of this camp?
Speaker 4 (12:29):
Who are you looking to.
Speaker 13 (12:30):
Stand out looking at I'm looking for Mason Graham. I'm
looking for him to get in that backfield. You know,
I'm not trying to cover for too long out there,
so you go to help my guy Miles out on
the D line. But uh, definitely Mason. I'm looking I'm
looking forward to all those guys, all our new guys
we got, uh Carson and everybody. So just looking for
everybody come out here, compete and uh try to be
(12:50):
the best.
Speaker 7 (12:50):
How much is that.
Speaker 5 (12:51):
Pressure, you know, guys like Mason and Miles, and and
how important is that the kind of working hand in
hand to create those turnovers that you got they then
you guys.
Speaker 4 (13:00):
Need to get this year.
Speaker 13 (13:01):
So say that one we're talking for.
Speaker 5 (13:02):
How important is that the pressure that they get, you know,
increasing the pressure in terms of kind of proportionally increasing.
Speaker 13 (13:09):
Number, Yeah, yeah, no, huge, huge. I mean we work
together a D line and the defensive backs. I mean
those guys getting pressure on that quarterback. Uh l puts
a quarterback in bad position to throw a ball overthrow
or something like that, and uh gives us opportunities to
get more hands on the ball and take it away.
Speaker 16 (13:25):
You guys talk so much about trying to make you
secure the takeaways this time, and I know you guys
joke about, like, you know, just sitting.
Speaker 7 (13:31):
The judge machine.
Speaker 6 (13:32):
Yeah, is it that simple?
Speaker 2 (13:33):
Like, I know it's it's it's kind of easier since.
Speaker 16 (13:35):
The don't But how do you know about trying to
make that a bigger puys?
Speaker 6 (13:39):
Actual?
Speaker 13 (13:40):
Yeah, that's a priority. I mean that as as really
as it good. I mean getting on the drugs machine
like yeah, it's like we may joke about it, but
just actually going and being intentional about those times, the
times you're on the drugs and catching the ball and
putting yourself in different different positions to uh catch the ball,
and uh, I think it's gonna translate out here. So uh,
it's definitely a focus. There's definitely a focus and something
I know I'm personally, uh go take a lot of
(14:01):
pride in and doing so I'm gonna I'm gonna try
to get an interception today, so if I don't, y'all
called me out on it, you know. So I'm trying
to get one to day.
Speaker 15 (14:09):
And I know the record wasn't what you wanted, But personally,
do you feel like last year was your best year?
Speaker 13 (14:13):
Uh? Personally, yeah, I do feel last year was uh
probably my personal best year. I'm just trying to do
the best I can to help this team win and
uh put them as best position as I can. But
I said this, this is a team game. We need everybody,
so you need everybody playing their best ball. And but
I can only uh control myself, and you know, so
I'm gonna try to put my best foot forward and
(14:34):
help this team.
Speaker 2 (14:35):
And everywhere along with team successful, Defensive player of the
year harder for it.
Speaker 6 (14:41):
But do you ever think about that?
Speaker 13 (14:43):
Uh? Yeah, yeah, I think I'm capable. I'm definitely uh
a Defensive Player of the Year caliber player, and but
I just I take things a day at the time,
you know, rewards and all that stuff that'll come down
the road whatever, But my focus is just the be
best I can uh each day, mentioned Mason earlier.
Speaker 16 (15:02):
You know, you know the draft picks obviously your guys
are specifically, how do you from a leader, as a
leader on this team just kind of help those rookies
get through their first camp and start apparent for darts.
Speaker 2 (15:11):
What type of things can you sort of share with
them like that?
Speaker 13 (15:14):
Yeah, just stand in constant communication with them and tell
them about my experience and uh, it's just it's just football.
There's nothing, nothing too crazy to us. So just come
out here. Play football, enjoy your time, try to be
the best you know, work hard when I say it,
so another nothing no secret sauce.
Speaker 1 (15:29):
Next All Pro defensive end Miles Garrett talks about improving
on his performance from last year and going for another
Defensive Player of the Year award.
Speaker 4 (15:39):
What do you think the mood of the team is?
Speaker 11 (15:40):
Since you guys are looking positive and guys looking forward
to get on the field, prove themselves and uh and
just you know, getting better each and every.
Speaker 2 (15:50):
Day, what do you how do you enter your nine?
So how do you enter the camp with expectations for
yourself and this team?
Speaker 11 (15:59):
Expectations a higher than ever. You know, I expect to
you know, bounce back from last year myself and and
uh no defensively and as a team. So you know,
the the standard doesn't change or at least it done lower.
It just it just uh raises them proves you know,
I think you know, we have guys who are are older.
You'll understand. You know, both sides that are good coin
don't come from a really good season, come from really
(16:20):
bad season. They can happen just like that. So you
you've got to, you know, take that into account every
every single day. When you're training and and uh getting
to know your guys. You know, you know, uh the
margins for this game are very thin.
Speaker 2 (16:31):
What else are you yere? You talked about like raising
for you're good and taking it to that next level.
Speaker 9 (16:37):
Even with the Defensive Player of the Year in the
trophy case, all the accolades and.
Speaker 15 (16:41):
All the records you've.
Speaker 6 (16:42):
Already a masked.
Speaker 10 (16:43):
Do they did.
Speaker 6 (16:44):
Disappoint in your career too?
Speaker 2 (16:45):
So did you come into this season have you.
Speaker 9 (16:49):
Uh pinpointed in what the level beyond that is and
how do you get there?
Speaker 11 (16:55):
I mean, I expect to get to the Super Bowl. Uh,
that's our expectation every year. And I expect to to
run back to the Defensive Player of the Year, So,
you know, keeping both both those things in mind, I
have to be the very best player I can be
every single day, whether we're we're practicing or playing sooner
step in step from the building, I have to be
uh best version of myself and the best leader I
can possibly Lese.
Speaker 15 (17:15):
I know every year it seems like you talk about
a different theme or focus for your off season.
Speaker 4 (17:20):
You had to define that this year?
Speaker 6 (17:21):
What what do you think it was?
Speaker 11 (17:25):
Mm? Letting that InterVoice out and everything that you know,
I try to keep in and uh, you know, uh
my inner monologue, how I you know, go out th
throughout the day do think about things or just letting
no people hear that, you know, hear my thoughts and
allow that to to speak volumes and uh and guys
really you know, grab hold it and uh be able
(17:46):
to take it and and uh inspire them, motivate them
and so we can we can improve, you know, not
not just keeping that to myself anymore.
Speaker 2 (17:53):
How about is there you guys are such a good
defense I'll get twenty three? Is there's so good?
Speaker 11 (18:00):
Up?
Speaker 2 (18:00):
Maybe you just rolled out expected that last year and
it didn't have.
Speaker 4 (18:05):
Or how would you explain that?
Speaker 6 (18:07):
I would explain what why? Y?
Speaker 2 (18:08):
You guys didn't play as well defensively a last year
as you did in twenty three?
Speaker 4 (18:14):
And do you expect this to be more like two years?
Speaker 7 (18:18):
Yeah?
Speaker 11 (18:18):
I mean we expect to to raise the bar again.
Uh it's hard to stay at the very top of
the as far as defensively and know we have to
come in and you now understand that, you know last
year is gone. You can't expect for no teams not
to adjust or to you know, just things to to
roll over and and uh, no teams to fear us,
especially after one year. You know you have to prove
(18:40):
that ye year and a year out that you'll be
the same same person or it'll come back better. You know,
each and every time you step on the field. And
I think, guys, really, you know I've come to understand
that now after you know, a a down year from
us defensively last year, we eles.
Speaker 14 (18:54):
I question about mean, what is the tone that you
want to see you'll especially starting today? But at did
you guys ramp up and get into the stom.
Speaker 11 (19:01):
Work Petwia needs to be said light the team uh
needs to be focused and intense. You don't needs to
and then be intentional every time you step foot on
the field, every time you walk into the classroom. You
gotta know exactly what you're doing and you know how
you can improve and improve the man next to you.
Speaker 2 (19:17):
How else, obviously quarterbacks so important. So how do you
view coming in not knowing which one of four guys
could be your weakness?
Speaker 11 (19:24):
Story that's got nothing to do with me. That's all
off to Kevin and know whoever you decide is is
the best fit for for what we're trying to do offensively.
You came one, we're gonna we're gonna rock rock beside
and and I think, now all these guys are very capable,
and uh, you know we have confidence all of them.
But you know, the found decisions on on Kevin and
you know we'll we'll roll without.
Speaker 10 (19:45):
What gives you the feeling or the confidence now that
you've been around this version of the twenty twenty fifty rounds,
the feeling that you guys can make that legit run
again at the super.
Speaker 8 (19:56):
Bowl, at the playoff.
Speaker 11 (19:58):
Uh, the fact that we came up off such a
uh down year and and guys weren't satisfied. Uh No,
guys were really disappointed cause they knew, you know, what
we had in the locker room, how within ourselves, and
you know it wouldn't be a let down if you know,
this was the expectation. But it is because we we
know we are we are far more in the tank.
Speaker 13 (20:17):
Uh.
Speaker 11 (20:17):
You know, we have a a great core unit, a
lot of young guys and you.
Speaker 6 (20:21):
Know we c we there's a lot of a lot
of juicer squeeze.
Speaker 11 (20:24):
So you know we're gonna continue to you know, try
to find uh, uh the best ways to put guys
in position to make the place for us, you know
where that's our offensive defense and even special teams. And uh,
I think you know we'll really don't be able to
turn the page. You know this year coming up, and
is there a lesson from.
Speaker 2 (20:39):
Twenty to twenty four?
Speaker 9 (20:40):
Your coin lazy team, you can carry it in twenty
twenty five to not only make you a ah A
a better team?
Speaker 2 (20:48):
What else to uh help you get through?
Speaker 11 (20:52):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (20:53):
You know, any adversity that eventually will pomp off.
Speaker 11 (20:56):
Don't take things for granted. It's never gonna be easy
matter and what position you play. You know what your
record is, what your record was. No each any given sunday,
you know both both teams have a chance. So you
know you've you've gotta, you know, come out and be
that same player every time you step on the foot
on the field. You can't. You can't have a a
slow step.
Speaker 6 (21:16):
You can't.
Speaker 11 (21:17):
You don't forget your assignment. You know all those things
you know that they feel like no minute details or
you know j it's just you know, one bad step
now that that can lead to no m uh, a
big play, a touchdown, don't whatever it is, you know
that that's how know, those things accumulate and you end.
Speaker 7 (21:36):
Up on where we were at last year.
Speaker 2 (21:37):
Hey, given how frustrated you were at the end of
last season, they how were you able to get to
this place right now where you have this optimism. You
have such high expectations for this team.
Speaker 11 (21:49):
You gotta channeling, you know, I have such high expectations
for the team, cause I have such high expectations for myself. No,
the team's gonna go outside go I'm gonna you know,
try to be the the driving factor behind UH and
create a standard in which everyone has to chase every
single day.
Speaker 6 (22:04):
What about is what did you think?
Speaker 11 (22:05):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (22:06):
Now you saw a Mason Graham and OTAs.
Speaker 7 (22:08):
Many kuh did you have and all that?
Speaker 2 (22:10):
What do you think he can do to help this defense?
Speaker 12 (22:14):
Uh?
Speaker 11 (22:14):
I mean from what I've seen this office, I think
he's worked as I saw. I've seen him in multiple
different places, whether it's past or summer Houston. UH with
Malik Uh, you know back up here after that, you
know he's you know, he's put in the work and
know he's really dedicated to the crap. So I really
believe now he'll get out there and make a uh
uh a hell of an impact, you know, very early mm.
Speaker 2 (22:35):
See plant class.
Speaker 10 (22:36):
I mean in the off season, Denzel just like really
went to to bat for you, you know, when you
were having your trade demand and things like that, and
he really sort of just supported the heck out of you.
Talks about how the two of you together, uh can
leave this defense in this football team. So my question is,
h how have you seen Denzel grow as a player
(22:59):
and as a leader and how what about the synergy
between YouTube guys just helping.
Speaker 8 (23:05):
To pull this team off.
Speaker 11 (23:06):
Well, he's been my brother since uh he stepped foot
on uh this facility grounds, and he's always on my
back and it's it's always been vice versa sell uh
and I appreciate him of standing by me through through everything.
But you know, he's he's been a leader. He spent
a leader in that that DV room, and I just
can't continue to try to, you know, elevate his voice
and make him heard through uh the whole team. And
I think he is, but you know, can't have anyone
(23:29):
no feeling like there they they can't be you know,
that leader for the entire team. And I feel like
just empowering him and no other other leaders across the team,
other players across the team to you know, make their
voices heard, you know, leading by example, balso, uh leading
with their voice. You know that that'll you know, create
a even more powerful environment and where you can really
(23:50):
grow and then uh improve.
Speaker 4 (23:52):
And so'll mention that you.
Speaker 14 (23:53):
See as a guy that he's keeping his eye on
is an impact layer, like you said, and somebody he
wants to see continue to grow in camp.
Speaker 4 (23:59):
Is there?
Speaker 14 (23:59):
Guys, are you're set of the ball that you've got
your eye on that kind of looking to see take
another step or continue their development.
Speaker 6 (24:08):
I'll say.
Speaker 7 (24:10):
MJ, MJ for sure.
Speaker 11 (24:12):
Now, I think he knows that he didn't have the
year that he wanted to last year, and uh, I
know he he had a great year before that, and
you know he wants to you know, continue to improve.
He wants to prove that he's the guy you know
in that room. And you know that should always be
the mindset no matter who's in your room, whether it's me,
whether it's Denzel, you know you you're you're out to
show that you know you're the very best you or
(24:32):
whether it's on your team or across the league, and
I wanna see him, uh, you know, achieve those goals
for himself, Grant get back to to to playing ainst
that Pro Bowl level. I wanna see you know, those
linebackers step up, especially the young ones. I think, uh
dB has a lot to prove, especially if you has
a lot to prove. And uh, you know who's gonna
be at the the end next to me and I.
I think a lot of guys are are are really
(24:54):
taking hold of that challenge. You know, Jack has made
it very very clear that you know, it's it's up
for grabs. So look at it like that. Uh, You've
got to attack every single day. You can't let off
the gas, uh do for even one play wh else.
Speaker 2 (25:07):
Back in any camp, I know you spend a lot
of time for.
Speaker 4 (25:10):
Him when you go on how what what didn't you
guys play in one of those guys.
Speaker 6 (25:13):
That you in one of those conversations with.
Speaker 4 (25:15):
Lincoln, how much can you help him in a.
Speaker 2 (25:18):
Position he's trying to scow und links to the right side.
Speaker 11 (25:21):
You can see just tryna, you know, walk him through
mine and my my my process while I'm I'm rushing
what I'm seeing. You know what I'm trying to set
up from from like lambade or lane traps and uh,
you know, trying to you know, get him to a
point where, you know, if if he can know see
those things in me, you can see those things and
and many of the other rushers across the league.
Speaker 6 (25:42):
And I'm not the same.
Speaker 11 (25:43):
Style as those those other guys, and but I can
try to, you know, emulate that and give him a
a look so he can he can be aware of
those things and h and be prepared when the time comes.
Speaker 2 (25:52):
You mentioned it ends on the other side of Yet,
what do you see out of the one of the
new guys, Joe, Uh, how do you think.
Speaker 4 (25:58):
He can be impact to see?
Speaker 6 (26:00):
Uh?
Speaker 11 (26:00):
I think he's quick. I think he's he's explosive and
uh I I think he works hard. Now he's this
first time he's been you know, asked to really rush
this much. So I think he's he's really been up
for the challenge. And you know, he's really adapted to
the new role, you know, pretty quickly. Now we just
gotta you know, get all the the the move set
you know, you know, uh defined and crystal clear. But
(26:22):
right now I think he he's really uh he's really
turning in the right direction.
Speaker 15 (26:27):
Well else, I no, Julian Jnzell talked about this a
little bit, but it seemed like in the spring, you know,
we saw more competitive periods and offense where stephens periods.
And does it feel like that sense of urgency or
that focus is heightened coming into campus year?
Speaker 7 (26:41):
For sure?
Speaker 11 (26:42):
I mean even you know, talking about it today, uh
the d line has put a real emphasis on uh
on one on ones during practice, you know, having uh
a board, a a set up for you know, uh
no wins and losses and know just you know, taking
hold of that looking at it where you know, if
the guy with the most wins is probably gonna be
(27:03):
the guy who's lining up on Sunday, the guy with
the who's getting off the quickest or no, no beating
this guy compared to this guy. I think all those
things will be taken into account and you know it'll
be something that the whole team pays attention to instead
of you know, just our group's individually.
Speaker 1 (27:22):
Lastly, coach Kevin Stefanski discusses how they are approaching this
year's training camp.
Speaker 8 (27:27):
Okay, good to see everybody, you know, excited to be
back at stay one for the veterans, we the rookies,
the coaches. We've been in here for a bit, but
getting some really good work done. So, as you know,
exciting days for our guys when you're back in the
building for the first time and getting around the players,
and I think the guys have the right attitude being
(27:49):
understanding the work that has to get done. We're excited
for the fans get out here on Friday across Country
Mortgage Campus. That will be fun. They always bring that
energy for us. So ready for the start of this thing,
but we know that there's so much work that goes
into this. On the Quin Shawn Judkins situation, I don't
have much to add. These are things that we take very,
(28:11):
very very seriously. We're gathering information. I know you guys
will talk to Andrew tomorrow, but I don't have much.
Speaker 6 (28:18):
To add on that situation. But with that, I'll take
any questions.
Speaker 2 (28:24):
Are all contact with Quin John during this situation.
Speaker 8 (28:28):
Yeah, I would say, not going to comment much further Jeff,
other than we're gathering information.
Speaker 5 (28:33):
Kevin along those lines, I know you're not gonna spit
on this specific topic, but this is another off season
where a situation like this has come up. How concerning
you is that and how much do you I mean,
I know you you address it with but do you
feel like you have to do more to emphasizes.
Speaker 8 (28:53):
I would tell you again, this is something I take
very seriously. We take very seriously. It's not something that
we want to be a part of. We want to
be shining the light on the good things that our
guys are doing in this community. Having said that, I
do know we go the League mandates a certain amount
(29:15):
of education in all areas, so certainly in this area,
and we decide to go above and beyond that, and
we will continue to do that. And if there's more
ways that we can reach players in any area, in
any area of education, we'll continue to look at that.
Speaker 4 (29:32):
We have three different sort of times for your practice.
Speaker 8 (29:36):
To mess up your tea times, Tony, Yeah, guys, you know,
typically we've practiced at about two o'clock in the afternoon.
There's guys like practicing early in the morning every once
in a while, so tried to make sure we do that.
And then just the way some of our meetings were
structured these first couple of days, felt like we get
out here in the afternoon Obviously it's gonna be warm
today and tomorrow. You need to acclimate to the heat.
(29:57):
I know, September seventh down at our place be anything.
It could be ninety, it could be sixty for all
I know. So, uh, we do need to acclimate to
the heat.
Speaker 2 (30:05):
Kevin, with the uncertain cho on, you, do you feel
like you need to at a running back camp.
Speaker 8 (30:09):
I think we'll see over the next few days weeks
as as we gather inform information.
Speaker 7 (30:14):
But I don't really I don't know.
Speaker 2 (30:15):
Yet for at least the time the time being moved
your room up to, like the piece.
Speaker 7 (30:20):
Your number one got rid of.
Speaker 6 (30:21):
Yeah, that's I think that's fair, saying more one more time, more.
Speaker 4 (30:26):
Than cance can game. How would you describe the changes you've.
Speaker 6 (30:29):
Made for this trend? Well, you know, we'll see.
Speaker 8 (30:33):
I haven't been out there just yet, but certainly how
you structure practice, Tony, the league mandates that you ramp up,
and they they mandate the amount of time that you're
out here, so you are beholden to that. They mandate
when the pads can go on, so you have to
abide by that. So we can't put pads on until
next week.
Speaker 15 (30:52):
Uh.
Speaker 8 (30:52):
Having said that there's things that we'll do in camp
that are maybe we'll be out here a little bit more,
maybe doing a little bit more from.
Speaker 6 (30:59):
A repetition stand point than previously.
Speaker 13 (31:01):
Kevin, when it comes to the quarterback competition, what is
your ideal timeline.
Speaker 6 (31:06):
To make a decision on that? Yeah, I think with
all things depth Shart, certainly quarterback.
Speaker 8 (31:11):
I have a plan that's in pencil, and you know,
we have to take in information every single day, taking
how guys are handling certain situations, and then adjust from there.
Speaker 6 (31:21):
But we'll get to those type of decisions later on.
Speaker 4 (31:24):
But is it possible that maybe like your decision could
can linger all the way up.
Speaker 6 (31:28):
Until like maybe you know, the until an active's come
out on week one.
Speaker 8 (31:32):
You're saying, listen, I think the big thing for me
is putting our guys in position where we can evaluate them.
Speaker 6 (31:39):
I think they did a great job in the spring.
Speaker 8 (31:41):
All four of those guys will continue to put them
in some situations, but ultimately we'd love to make a
decision sooner than later.
Speaker 4 (31:49):
Do you expect with the quarterbacks will be the same
as many camp.
Speaker 8 (31:54):
I wouldn't say that, you know, not the same per
se Tony, but we'll continue to roll guys in there.
Speaker 6 (32:00):
This week. We got four days before and off day,
so I'll take a look at how we do it
this week and then we'll huddle up.
Speaker 8 (32:07):
I think our off days on Sunday this week, we'll
huddle up on Sunday and decide how we want to
handle next week.
Speaker 4 (32:11):
Kevins, we hit two joint practices.
Speaker 6 (32:13):
How much of account of that the kids that with
a four way QB competition.
Speaker 8 (32:17):
Yeah, I think it's certainly. Uh, the benefit is in
that you're going against a defense that's not your own.
Both sides, our offense, our defense really get to know
the other side of the ball for the Cleveland Browns
really well. So to be exposed to a different look, certainly,
to be exposed to different players, I think you can
gain some valuable valuable information when you're talking about evaluating players.
Speaker 4 (32:38):
We're chun you just.
Speaker 9 (32:39):
Would be the field of the way you did two
on one, two on another, and how did you like
how they'll worked during.
Speaker 6 (32:46):
Okas and media.
Speaker 8 (32:47):
We'll do that for a few periods this week. Today
we'll have one period like that. You know, with anything,
there is cost to everything you do, so you can't
have forty plays on either Felix, that's gonna have cost
to your the rest of your players. So being very
intentional about what we ask our guys to do because
(33:08):
we're trying to get it's not just about one position.
We're trying to get all of these guys ready to play.
Speaker 4 (33:12):
You have a new sports science a lot of changes
to they contribute to how you skip him.
Speaker 6 (33:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (33:20):
I take in information certainly from sports science, from medical
really we we kind of look at health and performances
as all encompassing when it comes to those type of
discussions and decisions, Tony, So certainly listen to uh.
Speaker 6 (33:32):
To everybody to so I can so I can make
good decisions.
Speaker 5 (33:35):
Which does I wish is Quinn Seawn's absence put more
on Dylan's play, you know? And what have you seen
so far from Dylan.
Speaker 8 (33:45):
Just you know the off season and every clean Yeah,
I think Dylan Sampson's done a great job from the
moment he's gotten here. He's very conscientious, very intelligent, been
very impressed with what he can do, and a bunch
of different facets of the game. Uh, you know, we're
still gonna bring him along based on how he performs.
So I think you'll see again over these next four
days and then into next weeks as we put some
(34:07):
practices under our belt, we'll be making evaluations on all.
Speaker 13 (34:10):
Of our guys fourteen last season, what's being done, you know,
inside the building, and ensure that meaningful game will be
playing in December in.
Speaker 8 (34:18):
The Yeah, I think for us that the focus really
has to go on day one of practice. We can't
we're not playing game till September. But what we can
do is get ready to play a seventeen game plus
season and that that's really about how we work and
that's what the guys are focused on today. What do
(34:39):
you expect to Yes, yeah, I think we'll see Dave's
doing as you know, as you can imagine a great
job rehaving. So we'll just, uh, we'll just keep seeing
how he's how he's.
Speaker 6 (34:50):
Progressing through his rehabit. Why was it an as supposed to?
Speaker 8 (34:54):
Yeah, I can't get into a ton of details there,
but Dave's working very hard, my call is, and I
know he's up up to.
Speaker 6 (35:03):
Uh doing a nice job.
Speaker 8 (35:05):
I mean, obviously the focus for Mike right now is
getting healthy and he's working very hard both in the
training room and in the weight room.
Speaker 6 (35:11):
He's doing a really nice job.
Speaker 4 (35:15):
Who also played time in the pre season.
Speaker 8 (35:18):
I think remains to be seen again, H have a plan.
I want to talk through that with the coaches as
we get into those type of games. You know, this
is the first time, Tony where we've had a uh
a preseason practice versus our week one opponent, so that
how does that factor into some of the decision makings
for that game as well? So all things that I'm
i'm uh talking about with our coaches now.
Speaker 7 (35:41):
Have a new will.
Speaker 14 (35:42):
Both described the home that they want to see as intense, hungry,
and so for you, especially in this week as first week,
what do you need your team's tone to be on.
Speaker 8 (35:52):
The people that were yeah, you know week one, day
one for training camp. Uh, everybody's healthy, excited. Uh, it's
been a long off season, so uh, their their focus
is where it needs to be. They're gonna push each
other on both sides of the ball. But we have
a lot of work to do. I think that's a
big thing that our guys understand. I think it's forty
(36:13):
six days till Sunday, September seventh, so uh, that's a
lot of that's you know that's a lot of opportunities
for us to get better every single day, and that's
what we're gonna do today.
Speaker 2 (36:23):
I know you said you can roll the quarterbacks at
least for this first week, but is it okay to
start reading into taking more for us?
Speaker 8 (36:30):
Are you asking for permission to look? I'll leave that
up to you, guys. Give you permission to make what
you want of it.
Speaker 2 (36:36):
Does a matter who's taking the first team rep today?
Speaker 6 (36:39):
Yeah, I think you'll see at a bunch of different positions.
Speaker 8 (36:41):
We will work guys in in different areas, so uh
I know it will get reported on who's in there
first and and it may change.
Speaker 6 (36:48):
It will change tomorrow.
Speaker 8 (36:50):
So I caution you to read too much into it
until we get much later on in the press first
week when you reassess how you handle the quarterback since
that maybe somebody gets produced.
Speaker 4 (37:03):
Reps.
Speaker 6 (37:04):
Not Yeah, not necessarily.
Speaker 8 (37:06):
Again, I have y Y I have opportunity to talk
to Tommy Reeves, Bill Muskgrave or our coaches just in
and how we wanna outline this. We've had an entire
off season program with our guys, so uh W. What
I try to do is have a plan for this
first block of four days. UH have a plan for
for the next block, but I'm ready to We are
(37:26):
ready to adjust as necessary throughout this thing. And then
ultimately we wanna make the best decision for the football team,
but al we also wanna gather information so that I
can make that decision the lines of situation and.
Speaker 4 (37:40):
The education market.
Speaker 2 (37:42):
Your you worried along the.
Speaker 10 (37:48):
Singing like this happens, but you say going there there
being the seed.
Speaker 8 (37:55):
Yeah, I can only tell you that, y y, You're
right in that with messaging, you have to to make
messaging sticky. You have to make ways for guys to
uh to understand where you're coming from. So uh, I
give a lot of credit to Ron Brewer and our
player programs group that changes up the programming, if you will.
And in terms of how you reach players, it's something
(38:15):
uh that we again just uh we take the allegations.
Speaker 6 (38:19):
Here very very very seriously.
Speaker 11 (38:21):
UH.
Speaker 8 (38:21):
And I also want to make sure that we're doing
everything in our power from a coaching staff position, from
everybody near our building, that we're educating our guys in
a bunch of different areas. But that's something that we
will always look at ways to reach our guys that's
that's uh eternal.
Speaker 13 (38:37):
To all of this summer.
Speaker 6 (38:39):
You could, yeah, would be one of those changes you
think it could be. I got to see two injury questions.
Speaker 4 (38:47):
Obviously, you guys put to Sean on the active publish.
Speaker 13 (38:49):
Is there any update to stand some of you guys
have to say anything with the initial statement.
Speaker 6 (38:54):
No, I don't think any update. He's doing a great job.
Speaker 8 (38:56):
He's working very hard, doing a great job in the
weight room, in the training room, meeting rooms, so everything.
Speaker 6 (39:00):
That he's able to do right now, he's doing a
great job. And then is there anybody who wasn't based
on pumper n.
Speaker 13 (39:05):
Five who you expect to be still a little limited
in their participation firsteason?
Speaker 6 (39:10):
Nobody comes to mind.
Speaker 4 (39:11):
Yeah, Kevin, in terms are the sports side stuf hard
man start times?
Speaker 2 (39:16):
Is there any talk about maybe stag or in each.
Speaker 8 (39:18):
Day because I know a couple of teams like go
twenty six hours between practice for the time. Yeah, we
we had a conditioning test yesterday at three o'clock, so
didn't wanna start prior to that time for today certainly,
and then obviously now you're worried about today's practice, how
that affects tomorrow so th that factors into the decision
making UH based on what the lifts we're doing with
(39:40):
the players, what type of workouts we're doing.
Speaker 6 (39:42):
That helps us UH decide when we wanna be out
here on on the practice field.
Speaker 16 (39:46):
I and then you talk a little bit about why
half where intactl.
Speaker 2 (39:50):
Is is that something you guys are interesting can be.
Speaker 8 (39:52):
Back sooner off that list or later in camp or yeah,
I I I can't go much farther past today with
with a a bunch with all of our injured players.
Speaker 6 (40:01):
He's he's right where he needs to be. He's working
extremely hard. He looks good. But I can't put a
date on it just yet talking about.
Speaker 14 (40:08):
The quarterback battle. But there are areas honest team where
guys are.
Speaker 2 (40:12):
Looking to take a lead or continue their development.
Speaker 14 (40:14):
How much emphasis is it for guys like MJ Diabande
to take that leap and need to get a strong
twenty twenty five season, early inner developed.
Speaker 8 (40:23):
Yeah, I think it's a good point about we have
a lot of young players in this football team, and
I've seen the leap that you mentioned. I've seen that
from players. Sometimes it happens year one to year two.
Sometimes it happens year two to year three. So what
we try to focus on in this building is getting
better every single day. We take the development of our
players very seriously, and and I know our guys take
(40:43):
it seriously their partners in their development. So I have
a bunch of young guys that I am expecting that
that they do do have that quote unquote leap because
of the work that they're putting in.
Speaker 4 (40:52):
Even this time.
Speaker 15 (40:53):
There's probably something that Pager's going to have to answer
for us.
Speaker 10 (40:56):
But last year when Mike Half had an incident, he.
Speaker 11 (40:59):
Was right back here, right now, way on the football field.
Speaker 8 (41:02):
I'm just curious, why is when shown that I would
let Andrew. Uh, I mean, I I ask Andrew tomorrow.
Speaker 6 (41:09):
Uh, Mary kay. But I don't.
Speaker 8 (41:11):
I can't add much to it other than to say,
all these situations are different and all we can do
is take in all the information that we have available
to us. But uh, that's something I'm sure Andrew kind
of traps.
Speaker 6 (41:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (41:27):
Are there any players who radically zoomed up in the
in the teams with big.
Speaker 8 (41:34):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (41:35):
I would tell you.
Speaker 8 (41:37):
The fun part for me being around this football team
in the spring and then seeing how they operate. Uh,
just coming back in really good shape. Uh, this is
a group that wants they get to work. They're they're
not so concerned with things outside of their control. They're
they're gonna push each other. I think that happens when
you have your best players that that practice hard, and
I think that's something that we we have here.
Speaker 6 (41:59):
Uh, well have our best.
Speaker 8 (42:00):
Players will push all these young guys and but in
terms of improvement and who those players are, that's what
training camps for to identify those type of guys. So
you can you know, crown a mister Berea.
Speaker 13 (42:13):
That does it.
Speaker 1 (42:13):
