Coming to you live from the Cross Country Mortgage Campus

Bally BTT, an official sports betting partner of your Cleveland
Brown's on eight fifty ESPN Cleveland.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
You are your hosts, Bo.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
Bishop and Nathan Zegura.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
Oh baby, we are outside. The fans are arriving.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
You are looking live.
Speaker 2 (00:42):
We are doing it live, and you are looking live.
Merely Bo the great Zi, this is gonna be I
like that one that's fast, bring these back. I think
that was the Tiger. Remember when Tiger said I'm not
going to work callers on a golf course and then
for him every club went in full panic and was like,
oh my god, how are we going to make sure
because everything said you have to have a ad to play.
And then I would say, that's probably around ten years old.
(01:04):
Is that fair?
Speaker 3 (01:05):
No, it's it is actually not fair.
Speaker 4 (01:07):
This is actually a I would say at most at
most five years old.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
Really at most we.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
Get a look at that logo. Let me wep my
beak on that logo. We're still brown face mass that
would have ever been Yeah, yeah, that's nice. It's like
a golf Henley.
Speaker 4 (01:22):
Oh right, it's great, especially on a day like this.
It also hugs the physique. Oh you like that, you
love that, you got the shades on. Our future is
very bright, uneventful, huh.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Now that no news has nothing to we have a day.
Ye give us a day a day if you're just
if you're just flipping on your radio or your stream
and have been off of social Some pretty big news
this morning is after ten NFL seasons, linebacker Jordan Hicks
announced his retirement from the NFL. Thirty three year old,
sort one hundred and thirty one games in his career Eagles, Cards, Bikes, Browns.
(01:54):
He's a Ohio native. I remember, I'm old enough to
remember him in the recruiting process. He was a five
star ye out of the Dayton area that that chose
Texas over Ohio State and then just had an awesome
career and was gonna be, you know, really central to
our plans on defense.
Speaker 4 (02:10):
Did this come out of nowhere for you? Came out
of nowhere for me and a great many others. Yeah,
this was certainly a surprise to uh to I think
everybody in this building that you know, Jordan Hicks was
not going to be playing this year and it. Boy,
it was a linebacker room where we were saying, not
that long ago, man, how are they gonna, you know,
(02:32):
get everybody, all the guys they like on this roster.
And you know, I go back to the fact that
we're a team that lives in nickel. Yeah, and our
starting nickel or sub package linebackers were Jordan Hicks and
Jeremiah Usukormoa year ago. Neither of them will play football
this year, That's right. And so you know you brought
in Jerome Baker. But now Jason tarvor Is has got
(02:55):
his hands. Well, he's gonna have Carson Schwessinger now I
think becomes your my of the present. Yeah, and so
he's gonna have it. He's really gonna have to ramp
up quickly. I mean, you think about what is the challenge.
The biggest challenge for a Mike linebacker is you're really
the quarterback of the defense. And so you're the one
(03:16):
who when you're making checks or you think something and
the quarterbacks making checks and you're making checks to their checks,
and you're playing that chess match. That's what the great ones,
the great ones at that position know what's coming before
it comes and you talk about the Fred Warners and
the Rokwan Smith's and the guys of that level. That's
(03:37):
what they do, that's what separates something. You talk about
quarterbacks who know that a lot of times, they know
our plays as well as we do. They know what's
coming as well as we do. And so that is
a big advantage in this league. And that is not
something that the Cleveland Browns are gonna have from that
experience level at that mike linebacker position.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
Now, Devin Bush has done it in the past.
Speaker 4 (03:58):
You know, mamud Diabat's onliness years, but has not been
a full time starter in this league. And so when
you think about this schedule and you think about the
fact that over the first four weeks, you're going to
be going against Joe Burrow, kind of from Carson Swessenger's standpoint,
ye Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, Jordan Love, and Jared Goff.
(04:20):
I mean, think about the fact that we talked about
on the Quarterbacks program that the Lions a year ago
noticed something that happened in a game against the Chicago
Bears where Jordan Love actually stumbled out of center, and
they brought that back in a purposefully deceitful stumble called
stumblebum to get the same mike linebacker to react the
(04:43):
same way for a touchdown on a tight end leak,
and that's exactly what they got. So you're talking about
the mike linebacker is really kind of the key in
the chess match that's going to be played, and Carson's
not going to have a lot of that background information
that a Jordan Hicks will have for those matchups. So
he's done a great job by all accounts. He know
Jason Tarver was thrilled with what he's done. But this
(05:05):
is a significant loss. And it's a significant loss because
not only is he not going to play for the
Cleveland Browns, it's also is he going to He's not
gonna get that knowledge passed on to him in meeting
rooms or on the field in real time from Jordan Hicks.
(05:26):
And so this is a significant, significant loss, I think
for the Cleveland Browns because of that. Now you drafted
Carson Swessinger third overall. I'm sorry, thirty third overall, just
picking the second round, so that what he's going to
be an impact player? Well, guess what, In the words
of John Cena, the time is now, Yeah, I mean
the pressure on him is immense.
Speaker 3 (05:46):
Yeah, I mean immense.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
If you think about when he was drafted, we were
holding out hope that you would still have Jeremiah husu Koramo.
I think most of us probably saw the writing on
the wall a little bit with that. But at the
same time, you were holding out hope. I mean, there
was nothing definitive at the time of draft, and you
certainly thought that Jordan Nickx would be there. Now you
look at Carson Sweesher and you say, wow, like he
is going to be in every down line he needs
(06:08):
to be quickly and every down linebacker, a dynamic player,
a captain of the defense all now.
Speaker 4 (06:15):
Now, it's got to happen right now, right now, and
you're you know, the good news is in his room
around him, You've got guys that you know, have been here.
Devin Bush at least for one year. He's the now,
he's the most senior guy. He and Jerome Baker are
the most senior guys in that show. Bush has one
year in the system. Jerome Baker doesn't even have a
game in the system yet.
Speaker 5 (06:34):
No.
Speaker 4 (06:34):
Mamoud dia Bat probably has the most reps of anybody
in this system, and he's been here.
Speaker 3 (06:38):
He's a third year guy.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
Yeah, you know.
Speaker 4 (06:40):
And then you've got the the second year players when
Winston Reid and Nathaniel Watson, Bookie Watson, that to me
looks like that's your six linebackers. If the Browns do
keep six, at the end of the day, they may
go five. But I think for special teams, that's one
of the things I always tell fans when you're out
here at your training camp, watch the punt teams. Watch
the first team punt teams. Watch who's in those protections
because often and those are guys that you know, certainly
(07:02):
the special team coordinator thinks is going to be here
and gets them the reps accordingly. But this was a
big This is a big one. I mean, here we
are a couple of days in. We don't have the
guy that was we thought was gonna be our starting
running back. We have we have not yet seen the
guy that would then be the running back if it
were not to be quin Shawn Jenkins and Jerome Ford,
(07:24):
who's who's dealing with a little bit of a nagging injury.
We had yesterday a quarterback situation that you know, we're
gonna talk with Kevin Stefanski, but I guarantee the word
that he would say that was untenable. Yesterday we had
a red zone period where Shador Sanders did not get
a real rep because of bad snaps, multiple bad snaps
and then twice.
Speaker 3 (07:45):
You know, we talked about it after the first ay.
Speaker 4 (07:47):
Julian Aquara and Cam Thomas and Joe Tryon Shoyinka are
so far ahead of the third string tackles. Yeah, these
are pros who have sacked the quarterback many times the
National Football League. I'm pretty I think a Quora may
have been a fourth round pick. Thomas was a third
round pick. Tryon shoyinco was a first round pick against
guys that were not drafted, that are trying to, you know,
(08:09):
make a team. Here as maybe that fourth tackle and
it has been rough. So basically, in four plays, one
was a bad snap like eight yards wide left. Two
of them, Aquara may have been able to receive the
snap he was in the backfield so quickly. Another one
was a bad snap where he ended up getting sick.
He didn't get a pass off in a red zone
because of the five in front of him, and so,
(08:31):
you know, how can you even evaluate a quarterback in
that situation. Now they did stay after and the rookies,
both Gabriel and Shador, got more eleven on eleven work.
That was part of you know, kind of like an
opportunity period for those young guys. But you know, you
were trying to get good red zone work there and
you were not able to get it for Schadeur in
this case because of what was going on around him.
Speaker 3 (08:50):
So you got that to deal with.
Speaker 4 (08:52):
And if you're trying to get these evaluations, you know,
that makes it almost impossible. Like that was almost a
wasted five play series right there for the offense, and you.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
Just you don't have any to waste. No, you're trying
to do this, which comes to that, and it's something
we're monitoring every day, and obviously you're monitoring it. Yesterday
we'll do training can't practice number three today, which'll be
here in about little less than an hour. But the
reality is when you are you can't. This is a
real truth. You really cannot prepare four quarterbacks. No, you can't,
(09:24):
especially when two of them are rookies, and so this
has to be paired. It's it's happening already. And so
yesterday it was Flaco first, and then Kenny and then
Dylan and then Shador. That was kind of the way
that it went. But there's just no way, there's no
way you can get four guys ready. So in pretty
short order, this, if this is truly a four person competition,
(09:48):
which it's hard to believe that it's possible that it
could be, this has to be tightened up really really quickly,
very quickly. Based on what you just said, right there
is just the latest example of it.
Speaker 3 (09:58):
Yeah, and that's tough.
Speaker 4 (10:00):
That's really tough because you want, especially for these young
guys to get good, good reps and good opportunities, and
certainly yesterday you were not afforded that. Now hopefully as
things ramp up, you will, things will get better and
they'll be tightened up. I mean, if i'm you know,
our third string center right here, you know, Brady Latham,
(10:21):
I gotta I gotta make sure my snaps are on point, right.
I mean, that's that's just the elementary deer Watson, like,
we got to get that the bass, got to get
to the quarterback and give him an opportunity to make
a play.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
I don't know if you guys we're getting some type
of a buzz. There's just popping something that's happened over there.
I think it's away.
Speaker 6 (10:37):
We'regan.
Speaker 4 (10:38):
We're good, Yeah, we're good. Defense has looked very good.
Obviously the front has looked very good. I thought yesterday
Mason Graham really popped, especially when you went back and
watched the tape. He was in the backfield a lot.
And I think that there is palpable excitement and good
reason for it for this front. And you know, we
talked yesterday with Joe Tryan Shoyinka about you know, the way,
(11:00):
and they've got legitimate waves that tackle. Yesterday Alex Wright
got to start over McGuire opposite Miles. Miles is always
in the backfield, he's a problem, but Alex Wright was
making place. McGuire's making plays. Try and shink is making plays,
so Chuir's making place, Cam Thomas making places. They got
six defensive nds making plays, and then in the middle.
I thought Mason Graham really stood out as well Malie Collins.
And you know, we're excited to see him get to
(11:21):
be next to at some point my call, which we
have not yet gotten to see as he is day
to day.
Speaker 3 (11:26):
But then again, aren't we all was that Eisen? I
think it was Eisen and DP.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
Yeah, I think that's what it was. I think I
think it was it was old school.
Speaker 3 (11:35):
Sports, end your day to day. But then again, I
think it may have been It may have been DP.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
It was DP or eyes and I can picture them
both saying it. Yeah, I don't remember which one said
it first. So true, so good, all right? So when
so that that's what's happening. We will have a practice
here in about forty eight minutes where we're going to
start to get going. We see some guys already starting
to mill about out here and start to get loose.
(12:00):
It's it's interesting. I don't think it was a former
player or not. I'm not sure, but there was a
rather large human who looked in the size range yeah,
wearing a Nick Chubb jersey, and I just thought, God, almighty, Yeah,
that's this speaks to there are a ton of guys
that are here for the recent successes, and then there's
(12:20):
just a ton of new faces as well. And this
linebacker room is probably gonna up being the best example
of it. But yeah, a lot of new faces. I
think we got the head coach making his way over here.
Speaker 4 (12:30):
We quick note the Browns have signed Winston Wright and
undrafted rookie out of East Carolina who's a wide room
for And the reason is yesterday we were having to
have equipment.
Speaker 3 (12:38):
Guys catch passes. We didn't have enough receivers.
Speaker 2 (12:40):
Coach Tfanski will no doubt talk about that among other things.
Coming up next you listen to Cleveland Browns Daily on

about to commence. The man in charge of it is
sitting to our left, your two time NFL Coach of
the Year, Kevin Stefanski, joining us. Two practices in how
(13:25):
we doing? Man, we have work to do.
Speaker 7 (13:27):
You know that's the overwhelming feeling of coaches is you
get out here and you're like all right, we got
to clean that up.
Speaker 6 (13:32):
We got to clean that up.
Speaker 2 (13:33):
We got to clean that up.
Speaker 7 (13:34):
And the fun part for us is making corrections and
then try not to make that same mistake again. So
you want the coaches the players to feel an urgency
early in camp, and they certainly feel that.
Speaker 4 (13:44):
But we got a long way to go before we
get into some of the news of the day. Obviously,
where are we in the ramp up period? Fans coming today?
What can people expect to see out there?
Speaker 2 (13:54):
Yeah, so you can.
Speaker 7 (13:55):
Today's the first day that you can put on shells
or what some people call spiders. They're the soft things
on anywhere's shoulder, so not shoulder pads just yet. Those
don't come till next week. So we've been in helmets
the last two days. Finally the shells go on. I
think it's a two hour limit on when you can
be on the field, And what happens is the league
starts that clock the second you start coaching your players,
(14:16):
So we'll get started I think at about one forty today.
Once that starts, you got to basically hit the horn
and exit the field by three forty. So they're very
serious about the ramp up in terms of time and
what you can do. So we're those are the parameters
that we're under. But we'll get into some really good
work in today. We'll get some team drills, some seven
on seven drills, obviously special teams. So we'll kind of
hit a bunch of different areas, including the red zone today.
Speaker 4 (14:35):
So is this like Brown's time. If it says practice
starts at two, it really starts at one. That's on
my high school coach.
Speaker 7 (14:41):
Yeah, if you're on time, you're late, right right, So
but now we I guess practice starts at two, but
really we start one. P fifty starts with our special
team's jog through, and you'll start seeing guys trickling out
here at one forty. So that's when the coaches can
can start coaching.
Speaker 2 (14:55):
Coach the news this morning of Jordan Hicks's retirement, how
does that hit you? Any sense that it was coming?
Where's the organization with that?
Speaker 7 (15:03):
Yeah, no sense that it was coming. Jordan's a guy
that I have a ton of respect for, and I
respect his decision. Obviously, he thought very long and hard
about this, and he got in here and felt you know,
obviously talked to and I'll let Jordan's pick for himself,
but he was. You know, I have so much respect
for him and I want what's best for him.
Speaker 6 (15:22):
Obviously.
Speaker 7 (15:23):
You know, Jordan's in the category of players. As an
offensive coach, there's guys that you coach against that are
a pain in the butt to go against. It particularly,
there's these linebackers and safeties that call out to play
before it's even coming.
Speaker 2 (15:34):
He's in that category.
Speaker 7 (15:35):
Now, having said that, being on the same side of him, you.
Speaker 6 (15:38):
Love him great.
Speaker 7 (15:39):
He played really good football for US last year, and
he's played great football in his career. You know, Jim
and Jordan have a long history. But I can't say
enough about the player because he played really good for us.
But the person off the field just a rock star
human being. I wish him a ton of success in
whatever endeavors he has after this. But he's been really
good for the game of football.
Speaker 4 (16:01):
A lot of the chess match that happens is between
that Mike linebacker and the play caller at times, or
the quarterback, the checks, the checks to the checks, all
of that.
Speaker 3 (16:09):
And now you know, we start off with Joe.
Speaker 4 (16:10):
Burrow and Lamar and Jordan Love and Jared Goff and
We're likely going to have a guy in Carson Swessinger
out there who has not done that. So how do
you you know, we talk about getting the quarterbacks ramped
up ready to go. This is the quarterback of the
defense in many ways. Get him ramped up and ready
to go.
Speaker 7 (16:25):
Yeah, I'd say Carson among a bunch of those guys, Nathan,
I'd say, I really, you know that entire group of
linebackers will be up to the challenge. You know, you
got to replace guys sometimes due to injury. Sometimes in
this case, you know, Jordan is retiring, which is totally
a decision that we all respect. But those are shoes
to fill and we have candidates. Like you mentioned Carson.
He's a young player, but he's very mature. He's a
(16:48):
thinking man in this game. So there's a lot that
we feel like he can handle mentally. But he's a
young player. So I can think of even yesterday, there's
a couple of mistakes that are made at that position.
And then you with great players, like you know, young players,
you want to be a great player is get you
make a mistake, you make a correction, you don't make
it again.
Speaker 3 (17:06):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (17:07):
Coach Last week talked was at the end of mandatory
mini camp, and we talked about this plan that you
were going to put together with the quarterbacks and just
acknowledging that there just isn't enough reps. There's never be
enough reps. As a coach, how's it gone so far
and will there be any adjustment or is the plan
going the way you thought it would be in terms
of making sure everybody gets the reps enough.
Speaker 7 (17:25):
Yeah, I think we're comfortable and confident in the plan
through these first four days. I obviously you have a
plan moving forward, but you want to take in information.
I want to see how these guys are performing in
different areas. And that's not you know, just an individual
or just in a team period or justin seven on seven.
It's really an all encompassing evaluation. So I think the
guys are doing a great job. You know, That's one
thing I would point out. You know, with four quarterbacks
(17:48):
that you're repping, these are four good guys. These are
good people. These are guys that love football, that love
to practice, that love to sit in there in the
meeting room and really talk. Also, I am we are blessed.
I'm so fortunate to sit in there and and talk
football with Joe, Kenny, Schadur, Dylan and these guys, and
(18:08):
they're we're coaching them up off the reps. Uh Deshaun
in there, Tommy Reese, Bill Musgrave. This is a fun
group that can really dive into all the things about
football that that we love. So that's what I appreciate
about those guys. Now, I haven't said that like you
like you said Bo, you know you're trying to maximize
all their reps. I'm sure every single one of those
guys would want every single one of the reps. I
get that, But how can you get better even if
(18:32):
you're behind, standing behind and getting that mental rep that.
That's what we're trying to do. Even in walkthrough, you know,
I would say this, we're maximizing our time and walk through.
So we're even doing a lot of two spots in
walk through, both offensively and defensively to make sure that
we're utilizing the time available to us as best we can.
Speaker 4 (18:48):
As the head coach, you get to be happy about
anything that happens. It might be better for the defense
one time better. I can't lose, can't lose. Kenny had
the great crosser to Jerry Judy the first day yesterday
Delpit ended up getting him was when he went back
and watched it was just a case of the ball
being too far inside.
Speaker 2 (19:03):
Yeah, and that's you know, that's football.
Speaker 7 (19:05):
I think playing this quarterback position, it's an occupational hazard
that you're gonna throw an interception. Sure, that's gonna happen
in football. Can you learn from it, that's the great thing.
So with that play in particular, we're probably a hitch
too late. And then and then we gotta as quarterbacks,
got to know our miss. You know, there's some incompletions
that you're like, hey, of course you'd love to complete that,
(19:26):
but I love your miss. I love that it was
out in front and those type of things. So it's
all learning. I thought it was a great play by Grant.
I thought it was a good route by Blake, great
play by Grant. That that's two sides making each other
better just by competing at the highest level.
Speaker 4 (19:38):
You talked about those reps and how they are hard
to come by, and we had a red zone period
I say with Shador where snap issues defensive guys in
the backfield, you weren't able to really get probably from
the quarterback perspective, what.
Speaker 3 (19:49):
You wanted out of there.
Speaker 4 (19:51):
It's a good win for the defense, obviously, but how
do you kind of try to balance that out going forward?
Speaker 2 (19:56):
Yeah, you have we have to clean a lot of
that up.
Speaker 7 (19:58):
You don't want reps that the balls on the ground
and a fumble exchange or or whatever false started off sides.
That's that's that's hard for us to evaluate. So we
will repeat those plays. We repeated those plays that we
could get the reps. You don't want to just have
those plays going to the ether, so you just repeat
them and make sure that you don't miss them.
Speaker 2 (20:17):
Coach, how do you balance you have so many you
look at kind of where we think a lot of this,
You have so many rookies who are gonna have to
be major contributors obviously Mason and Carson and Dylan and
who knows what else, but a lot of rookies in there.
How do you balance early camp giving them all that
they can handle, but not giving them too much where
they're drinking out of a fire hose and drownding.
Speaker 6 (20:37):
What's this?
Speaker 2 (20:37):
That's a good question. It is a balance.
Speaker 7 (20:39):
You know, there's things that we're doing offensively that in
a game plan you'd really want to streamline and make
it easy and okay, hey we're doing this and reminder
of this in camp.
Speaker 3 (20:49):
We want to see what they can handle.
Speaker 7 (20:50):
We want to challenge our guys, and we know that
with challenging your guys, there may be some things that
aren't perfect. That's okay. I'd rather that than than just
build so slowly. So the other piece of that bows
we're trying to find out about our players from a
skill set standpoint and what can and can't they do.
And that's important to know. None of us are perfect.
(21:10):
So there's certain things that a player does and sees
really well, and there's certain things that they don't. So
let's find out what those things are. With rookies, you
have a tape on them, you have the off season program.
We haven't put pads on yet. So the evaluation process continues,
not just in terms of who's going to make our
fifty three, but also what are our guys good at.
What will be our strengths as a football team, what
are the things that we got to minimize maybe some
(21:32):
of our weaknesses.
Speaker 3 (21:33):
You talk about competition all the time, and I think
take miles out of it. We know what his role
is going to be.
Speaker 4 (21:39):
That defensive end room. There seems to be a lot
of talent in there. You guys bring in Tryon Shayinka,
you bring in Oquara camp Thomas played well for US
last year. Alex's back, Isaiah, is that a room that
you've kind of enjoyed watching early? Obviously you want the
pads on and see what it looks like, But it
feels like there are constantly plays being made from that
defensive end position.
Speaker 8 (21:56):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (21:56):
Our backup defensive line is very deep. Yeah, you've seen that.
Where are our ones, twos and threes are playing really
at a high prose.
Speaker 6 (22:04):
They're pros.
Speaker 7 (22:05):
You got a guy like you mentioned Juliane and Joe
and these guys that have played a lot of football.
So it's a deep, deep group, which you know, I
appreciate that because we like to play multiple guys.
Speaker 2 (22:15):
Coach, have a great practice. Yeah, everybody, stay healthy, Appreciate
your time.
Speaker 3 (22:19):
Yeah, appreciate you guys.
Speaker 2 (22:19):
All right, there he goes, Kevin Spansky joining us here.
Practice number three set to start in about thirty five
minutes from now. Lots to get to here. Look forward
to painting the pictures for all of it. According to
the new clock. Oh, the new clock, the new clock fifty.
That's true, That's true. You listen to Clear the Brons

Speaker 7 (22:54):
H Right.
Speaker 2 (22:54):
Welcome back, you Clue the Brown Staley presented by vallely Bet,

Kevin Stefanski.
Speaker 7 (23:10):
Against our police officers, Officer Philip Wagner, who lost his
life in this uh TO officers were injured, Officer Peter Gale,
Brent Payne. We are thinking about the community of Lorraine.
We're thinking about everybody in law enforcement that keeps us safe.
It's a it's a tough, tough news and I know
(23:33):
they're going through it and I just want them to
know we're thinking of them as they go through this
where they're they're start certainly in our thoughts and prayers,
I just want to make sure that we acknowledge that
before we get started. Want to acknowledge Jordan Hicks obviously
a player, a person that I have an amazing amount
of respect for. Jordan played really really good football for us,
(23:55):
played at an extremely high level, and he was even
better off the field than in what he was able
to give to this football team. So an amazing career,
one that needs to be celebrated. And just want you
to know that we support him. Obviously in his decision.
We'll miss him, but he's somebody that I have a
ton of respect for him. So if that'll take any.
Speaker 9 (24:16):
Questions about that linebacker lift the linebacking Cory. It's such
a young group below Jerome and Devin. Just how much
more does it require them to I know they've played
some football, but not as much. How much is requirding
to kind of grew up as much off as on
the field.
Speaker 7 (24:35):
I think that oftentimes happens Chris and football. When you
lose a player dude injury or retirement or whatever, there's
opportunities that come up for younger players. And you know,
in this day and age, young players play early in
this at these positions, so they may be counted on,
and that's why we're working so hard. That's why we're
trying to be efficient with everything we do, maximize every
(24:57):
rep and minute that we have with these young men
to get them.
Speaker 2 (25:00):
Ready to play. He was thinking about retiring.
Speaker 7 (25:07):
I would, yeah, I would let I don't want to
speak for Jordans, I'll let him speak for for himself.
But uh, you know, we talked earlier this week and
I support whatever. I obviously support whatever decision he made.
Speaker 2 (25:21):
Kevin. Yesterday at the end of practice, is that what
you call an opportunity period?
Speaker 7 (25:24):
Yes, yeah, We've always done that, you know, I am thinking.
I asked coach Schwartz if I can rebrand it to
hungry Dogs because coach has a great line that hungry
dogs run faster. So that may just be called our
hungry Dog period, but that's copyright Jim Schwartz. But the
idea there is, you know, some of the guys that
(25:47):
aren't inting a ton of reps, let's go get a
team period yesterday where we'll do skills and drills today,
we'll do a seven on seven another day. It's just
an opportunity for those guys to get better.
Speaker 9 (25:58):
Kevin, I know You've been asked a lot about Shugar
since he has come in. Just all the attention, all
the focus, everything that you know, he he generates, you know,
as he says content, how of just the way you
how impriss have you been?
Speaker 6 (26:11):
Just the way he's handled all.
Speaker 3 (26:13):
Of that that that's come his work.
Speaker 7 (26:15):
Yeah, I think Chador does a nice job of keeping
the main thing the main thing. He's working very hard
in the building, in the meeting room, in the weight room.
Out here on the field, he's working hard and keeping
his head down and attention that comes with it. And
in this day and age, that's something that our guys
do a great job of off the field, is including
our fans and what they're doing. But he does a
(26:36):
great job of keeping the focus where it needs to be.
Speaker 2 (26:39):
You've been in the mix of place the first two
days he with his job.
Speaker 7 (26:45):
Yeah, I think all those things are what will work
through Tony. I don't think that we're setting a depth
chart in any way.
Speaker 2 (26:52):
Since we talked to and we asked.
Speaker 5 (26:54):
Him about that, he really hasn't got a chance to
want with the starters. And I know it's one of
the two days.
Speaker 7 (27:00):
But will we see a little bit more of that
or or maybe the twos or something like that.
Speaker 3 (27:04):
Today.
Speaker 7 (27:05):
Yeah, like I told you, guys, we'll continue to rep
these guys throughout the last couple of days. Next week
we'll move guys around. I think for any of our players,
it's really just focusing on what you have in front
of you. And he's done a great.
Speaker 6 (27:19):
Job of them.
Speaker 2 (27:19):
Because Mike Worts gonna be up there to day.
Speaker 7 (27:21):
Mike will be out here today he's dealing with a
hand injury, but he maybe if he's not out here,
he's inside getting treatment.
Speaker 10 (27:28):
So there was you signed a receiver this morning?
Speaker 7 (27:31):
Did have anything to do with everything? Has everything to
do with everything, Scott, It's all connected. Yeah, yes, we'll
dream forwards, not today, but but progressing.
Speaker 10 (27:42):
He's close Kevin period at the end that resident at
the end where Sugar was out there yesterday's bats and
I think there's a penalty. I guess what are the
coach Mots offered that especially for him and maybe how
he can handle that when things are going badly.
Speaker 7 (27:57):
Well offensively, we have to do a much better job there.
Speaker 8 (28:02):
That We had too many.
Speaker 7 (28:04):
Operational issues, just center quarterback exchange. We had a false start.
So we can do a better job. And then you know,
we repeated those plays that we could get some reps.
But I think there's opportunities for quarterbacks. Even there will
be a play where the quarterback is likely sacked, you know,
if you're playing real football, But we continue to play
(28:24):
as quarterbacks so that we can get a rep of
off schedule, get a rep of scramble drill. So even
in those moments where yeah, things didn't go the way
that you want them. It's not clean, it's not three
and the hitch balls out, I think there's still plenty
to learn from those reps.
Speaker 11 (28:36):
Would be easier though, or I don't know easier is.
Speaker 8 (28:39):
The right part.
Speaker 7 (28:40):
But when you are watching a good gala in the
center stamp change story is challenging.
Speaker 2 (28:48):
Do you want to see him work with some higher
level of talent.
Speaker 6 (28:52):
To see what he can actually do?
Speaker 7 (28:54):
Yeah, I think it's I understand the question. I would say,
we will continue to rep the guys in different with
different teams, centers, all all of that. And that was
you know, that was a we need to be better
in that period there, Mary Kay, which we will be today.
But you know I was saying earlier everything our players
(29:14):
do is a it's an all encompassing evaluation. It's it's
a it's never gonna be about one player, one period
here and there. It's gonna be about everything they do,
including uh, you know this preseason.
Speaker 10 (29:25):
Kevin Martin Anderson, he said himself he was not happy
with the last season.
Speaker 6 (29:32):
So what have you seen from him? I know it's
tent a couple of days here, but even many Kevin
now that may may be better.
Speaker 8 (29:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (29:39):
MJ is a very determined young man. I appreciate that
he feels like he didn't play at his best. I mean,
he's right, He's got such a high ceiling. We've seen
him play at such a high level over the course
of time. He will bounce back. And it's no there's
no secret to it, there's no magic want It's just
from him working really, really hard. He's a kid that
is in here all the time, constantly working at his craft,
(30:01):
working on his body. So I expect him to have
a big, big bounce back here.
Speaker 12 (30:05):
Kevin Dylan is talking about it, like when he's not
getting actual reps the stuff he does Janson or Gabriel, Oh,
Dylan Gabriel. When he's not getting actual reps, you know,
he values, those Nunnal reps and things like that. What
are your expectations of these guys when they're not actually
taking reps.
Speaker 8 (30:20):
It's a good question.
Speaker 7 (30:21):
I think you'll if you watch behind one of you know,
you have one player in there right, A lot of
times you'll see the quarterbacks behind walking through the play
as it's happening about twenty yards behind. I think that's
one way to get it. I think we have those
walk through rooms up there where you can put it
on a specific angle where you can get a full
speed rep and it's a terf floor in there, so
(30:41):
you can take a drop. So that's one way to
replicate it. But the term we've used is we're trying
to steal reps any which way we can. Of course,
the absolute best way is to be in in the
moment and get that rep. Unfortunately, you're not gonna get
every single rep, so how you find ways to steal
those you have to get creative about it. Good, good,
Thank you guys, appreciate it, Thank you.
Speaker 2 (31:03):
All Right, there you go. Coach from the Podium. Presented
by Vivid Seeds Perchash Official Fan Experience package today for
the Ultimate Game Day, our team is matriculating its way
out here. We spent much of the early part of
the program and coach addressed too, with the sudden retirement
of Jordan Hicks. You just saw Carson Swesssinger run out
onto the practice field.
Speaker 6 (31:23):
Man.
Speaker 2 (31:23):
He's a big dude, buddy, and.
Speaker 4 (31:24):
Two hundred and forty pounds, big, big guy can move.
Tarv likes his bend his hips. He was saying he
could walk with his hips. But whatever, whatever was, apparently
it's good for football, according to Tars. Tars was fired up.
But you know, you're very fortunate to have him in
that room as the coach, so much experience and defensive
(31:45):
coordinator in this league, defense coordinator in college.
Speaker 3 (31:47):
Uh, and you know you're gonna need that.
Speaker 4 (31:50):
You're gonna need the osmosis there because it's on right now.
It is absolutely on for Carson Swestinger right now. We
talked about that room. Meah mamud Diabotte could get some looks.
Devin Bush, you know, will get some looks. But you're
gonna need two or three of those guys out there,
and Carson's question is definitely going to be one of them.
I mean, I don't think there's any doubt in my
(32:10):
mind that he is now the guy in that linebacker
room that is going to have the biggest out, biggest
say on how that unit performs this year.
Speaker 2 (32:20):
I mean it's between I mean it's yeah, I mean
cap of the defense.
Speaker 4 (32:25):
He's the quarterback of the defense. And he got back
kind of what I talked about at the beginning of
the show. Kevin Sefanski put for you in real terms
there saying, when you are a play caller and you
have got that Mike linebacker on the other side, he said,
and sometimes it can be a safety. But those guys
who know what you're doing before the play is run
because they just they've studied so well, they know your formations,
(32:45):
they know your tendencies, and the advantage that that absolutely
gives a defense and why it's a pain in the
butt for a play caller and an offense. Well, here's
the thing that is now the situation honestly for you
know that that's where Carson Swesssinger has to get. That's
where he's got to get. And right now you know
he's hasn't played it a game. Yeah, come to say,
(33:09):
what's up to Gerard our broadcast colleaguely pure joy, absolute joy.
Speaker 2 (33:18):
He's going. He's going the old school way there, layering it.
You go with a nice layer there to get that
sweat in.
Speaker 3 (33:23):
Yeah, I'm not at uh, not interested in sweating so much.
Speaker 4 (33:29):
That's what that's all about right there, and he's going
to get after it, and we're actually well positioned.
Speaker 3 (33:33):
He and Denzel Ward.
Speaker 4 (33:34):
This is one of the things that people come a
training camp and you'll notice during special teams periods. You know,
Denzel Ward's not in special teams now during the season,
he actually will do some some field goal block because
he's so darned good getting off the edge and doing that.
But when they're in those periods, he will come over
with Brandon Lynch typically kind of right where we're situated here,
what direction are we on?
Speaker 3 (33:51):
Gibe? Is this northeast south or west? Looking west? There
you go, man, that Montana upbringing. You know, you just
like you just look to the guy and you're like.
Speaker 2 (34:00):
Yeah, we're in the northeast corner of the brown spot,
and I don't know which way you're looking. Word, where's
the horizon, where'd the sun come from? Where's it going?
Speaker 3 (34:11):
Head west? Young friend.
Speaker 4 (34:13):
So they're gonna do a lot of work kind of
in this this section, which is great. By the way,
Bernie here over there signing a bunch of autographs. Always
great to see the great Bernard.
Speaker 6 (34:22):
It's awesome.
Speaker 2 (34:22):
Join us at two o'clock.
Speaker 3 (34:24):
That's right, that's right.
Speaker 4 (34:25):
Well, and then we're gonna be able to break a
little news. I think I don't know if that's even
out there yet.
Speaker 3 (34:29):
What what we have? A little surprising. I don't know, Bernie,
news and what's not?
Speaker 2 (34:34):
I think it's news. No, no, no, no, no, no,
Like I don't know if it's been out there.
Speaker 13 (34:37):
I don't.
Speaker 3 (34:38):
I don't think.
Speaker 2 (34:38):
I haven't seen anything.
Speaker 3 (34:39):
I haven't seen anything about it. And I'm a part
of it. So that's right, right, at least I think
I am.
Speaker 6 (34:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (34:45):
A couple of notes around the league. The Raiders release
defensive tackle Christian Wilkins with the designation of terminated Bested
Veteran due to how Wilkins treated the rehab from his
foot injury suffered last season. The Raiders voided the remaining
thirty two million dollars a guaranteed money left on his
co He has filed aggrievance with the NFLPA is a
twenty nineteen first round pick from the Dolphins. The Raiders
signed in to a four year, one hundred and ten
(35:07):
million dollar extension last year. That's a big one.
Speaker 4 (35:12):
They voided thirty five million dollars of his guarantees. Thirty
five million dollars of his guarantees.
Speaker 2 (35:19):
That is you think that'll hold up.
Speaker 3 (35:22):
It feels like it is without precedent.
Speaker 4 (35:24):
I can't think of a time where somebody got that
kind of money taken away from them because the team
did not like how they rehabbed.
Speaker 3 (35:29):
But that's where we are.
Speaker 2 (35:32):
That is where we are. No rehab necessary for Justin Fields.
A big scare yesterday at Jets camp, thinking potentially in Achilles.
Turns out it was a tow. He was back at
practice this morning after being carted off. Officially he's day
to day, but he was there today, So I guess
he's not even.
Speaker 4 (35:48):
That he's gonna be. He's fine, It's fine. Cart was
made a bigger deal. I guess we got. We got
a young a young guy out there working with the
corners and b Lynch.
Speaker 2 (35:58):
I like to see that.
Speaker 13 (36:00):
I wonder if doctor Jacob that would be uh, that
would be be Lynch's son. Oh yeah, that's the youngest
one man Oh cool, that's the youngest one. He was
with us at Mandatory Mini camp.
Speaker 3 (36:13):
Well, I was with my youngest son at that moment
as he was fresh, very new to the world, very
new to the world.
Speaker 2 (36:25):
All right, let's we're gonna take a quick time out
on the other end of this. On the other side
of this quick time out, sure where Sanders will be
at the podium you listen to Cleveland Browns Daily eight
fifty ESPN Cleveland.
Speaker 1 (36:38):
Cleveland Browns Daily presented by bally Bet, an official sports
betting partner of your Cleveland Brown's on eight fifty esp
and Cleveland.
Speaker 2 (36:50):
All Right, let's head back from the podium, presented by
Vivid Seats first your visual fan Experience package today for
the ultimate game day. Here is rookie quarterback shout or Sanders.
Speaker 8 (36:58):
Less to be here?
Speaker 14 (36:59):
Of course, I'm happy all y'all here, happy, uh that
the fans are able to be here, and I'm excited,
you know, to be a part of his team.
Speaker 2 (37:09):
Had the way talk can grow with Doug back there.
Speaker 14 (37:12):
Yeah, for serious a respect thing. You know, I know
a lot of people want the content. I know i'm'a produce,
so uh nah, I I never want to make anybody feel,
you know, any type of way about anything. So it
was important that he gets everything he needs to say
out and everybody captures what he has.
Speaker 8 (37:29):
And then now you know I'm here, should hear?
Speaker 9 (37:31):
How do you maximize I know that the reps are
being divided up to put four? How do you maximize
the time when you're not getting the reps?
Speaker 6 (37:39):
What do you?
Speaker 3 (37:40):
How do you what's what do you do to to.
Speaker 8 (37:42):
Kind of take advantage of that?
Speaker 14 (37:44):
I would say, just have a deeper level of understanding,
because I know whenever I get my opportunity, I gotta
maximize it.
Speaker 8 (37:52):
So that's that's something you have to change in the mentality.
Speaker 14 (37:58):
Uh standpoint, And a mental standpoint is though, Okay, I
just gotta think about what I could do to get
better even if I'm not getting reps in yeah, it's
no problem.
Speaker 7 (38:11):
Some kinds of call about the mental intensity that they
wanna have at at training camp these first two days
and going into the third.
Speaker 2 (38:18):
What's your mindset and how are you approaching that intensity?
Speaker 8 (38:21):
I would say just learning.
Speaker 14 (38:22):
Uh every day, Uh, of course I'm learning different things
cause I know the opportunity will come, and whenever it comes,
I wanna be able to know the ins and outs
and know the full everything, so I don't wanna really
make too many mistakes.
Speaker 8 (38:37):
Uh when it's my time, we do you feel like
you're getting the uh the most comfort comfortable you know
coming back from any camping in the first companies in
a training camp, I say, definitely the playbook.
Speaker 14 (38:44):
Yeah, I'm getting I'm getting uh super com super comfortable
in the playbook for sure, and it's helping me out,
you know, uh overall in the film should like to
sell you guys, since.
Speaker 15 (38:54):
That you guys are a little short on bodies here
with house catchers like watching you yesterday and and early
part of practice and sometimes you're throwing to some of
the equipment guys, like how do you maximize those opportunities
even when it's not a past cutcher that.
Speaker 6 (39:06):
What's gonna be acrosster?
Speaker 8 (39:08):
Uh doesn't That doesn't really phase me.
Speaker 14 (39:12):
You gotta understand, we we went, we came all the
way from HBCU to a Power five and then out
we here. So at this point, if you look around,
it's nothing, there's nothing, you know, that's that's a challenge.
Speaker 8 (39:23):
I say, how were you approaching.
Speaker 10 (39:26):
The four main competition as you get to training camp
and as you get closer to y season and that week.
Speaker 14 (39:31):
On, I'm focused on doing me. I'm focused on learning
what I need to learn. Uh, simply, it are you
thinking about winning that job for a week on?
Speaker 8 (39:42):
I don't think.
Speaker 14 (39:42):
I don't think nobody in this organization is here if
they're not tryna win. Honestly, Uh, I think you know,
they tryna win to who gives out the best water
and gatorades out here? So it it's definitely competition everything
in life. Uh, it's so many cameras out here. It's
definitely competition with content obviously, So I think everything in
life uh boils down the competition.
Speaker 10 (40:05):
You've been a star for your entire life.
Speaker 8 (40:07):
So how difficult is it to be patient that you said, waiting.
Speaker 6 (40:11):
For your turn?
Speaker 14 (40:12):
I'll say it's different phases in life, different things in
life you have to go through, you know, And that's
that's all it is. I'll say for me, it's building blocks,
you know. Sometimes I always always had to get uh
overly prepared and had to worry about a lot of
different things. Uh, just from my youth to high school
(40:33):
to college, and I never had a chance to I'll say,
sit back, and learn more in depth of everything. So
I was always thrown in the fire and and I
always I always exceeded expectations.
Speaker 7 (40:48):
So yesterday Andrew Berry mentioned.
Speaker 8 (40:51):
That, uh speeding Huh I figured so.
Speaker 6 (40:57):
Yeah, so he said that you.
Speaker 9 (40:59):
Know, it wasn't smart.
Speaker 6 (41:00):
He said, he talked to you, he said, Kevin.
Speaker 5 (41:02):
Uh, Kevin said he also talked to you.
Speaker 6 (41:05):
So I'm just wondering, you know, what did you learn
from that incident?
Speaker 5 (41:08):
Yeah?
Speaker 8 (41:09):
I definitely learned how to drive fast at all.
Speaker 14 (41:11):
So I I I really I really don't even drive
like that much anymore that much anymore, but I really
don't drive fast at all. So I definitely follow the rules.
And I hope everybody learn from my situation. You know
that not drive fast at all was a long, hot.
Speaker 2 (41:28):
Day and you're the red zone period looked a little frustrating.
How frustrating was it?
Speaker 9 (41:34):
That was?
Speaker 4 (41:35):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (41:36):
Praps, you're at at the end.
Speaker 8 (41:37):
Nah th This is the thing I I it's I
don't never take anything.
Speaker 14 (41:41):
It's frustrating because I know everybody tries they best, so
like even you know, throughout everything and cause and everything,
I was never frustrated ever at teammates and everybody cause
I know everybody's going out there doing their best. So
if you doing your best and you tell me, you
look me eye and tell me you doing your best.
I know I'm out here trying to do my best.
I know I make mistakes. I know you make mistakes.
So it's like, why would I be mad? We all
(42:03):
in similar situations, So that doesn't really frustrate me at all.
You know, it doesn't frustrate me being able to have
an opportunity to We have days on days on days
and days just the relationships, and you know, you could
look at somebody, I'd be like, my bad bro, Like
that's that's that's what was I'm like, all good, It's
no problem, uh because those how much time everybody has
(42:27):
to spend together. It's about relationships overall. So I don't
I don't want any memories of me, you know, being
negative or being mad at any situation that happen.
Speaker 2 (42:37):
We saw you at the book like you were at
the Rainbow.
Speaker 6 (42:39):
UH Jurists event and UH really embedded in the community,
which you've done so much of that since you've been
here in this short time.
Speaker 2 (42:46):
Why was it important for you to be there and
just be doing all the things that you've.
Speaker 14 (42:50):
Been doing anything, Well, I say, it's definitely it's something
I feel like God put me here to do, you know,
re but whatever the situation is here, uh, the fact
I'm able to bring light to the community to uh
different situations, that's that's of course my calling. So yeah,
I'm just excited that, you know, one decision and one
(43:12):
thought is able to impact so many lives and and
how people remember that. So that's kind of That's kind
of like how I go about things. Nothing's ever like
I say, pre pre planned or well thought out plan like,
it's none of that. It's okay, I've one thought, all right,
let's do it, like and then that's just how that's
(43:33):
just how it goes.
Speaker 8 (43:34):
I know you say you're trying to maximize those reps,
and you know factor matter.
Speaker 7 (43:37):
I think it's probably like the fust amount of practice
reps you're getting, like maybe your your whole foot walk career.
Speaker 9 (43:42):
Like, I'm curious when you can't take me inside what
is before practice?
Speaker 6 (43:46):
Look like? What is after practice?
Speaker 7 (43:47):
Look Like you talked about you.
Speaker 11 (43:48):
Know, the virtual walk, virtual reality, like you spend more
time with doing Okay, CONSI take me into.
Speaker 14 (43:54):
That horn, that horn is sick. My fuck, bro, I
don't know who who cries the golf cars? Are they
fixing that? Because that is it is doing me all
my thoughts interrupted? Man, y'all could cut that.
Speaker 8 (44:11):
It don't matter.
Speaker 2 (44:12):
Yeah, but just what is what is like before practice?
Speaker 13 (44:14):
Like?
Speaker 8 (44:14):
What is after practice?
Speaker 3 (44:15):
Look like?
Speaker 8 (44:15):
To make sure to hate you?
Speaker 14 (44:16):
Yeah, see, it ain't me, It ain't me doing that.
I don't know what it is, all right. I guess
they're busy right now. Before practice, of course, it's jotting
down all the plays and it starts the night.
Speaker 8 (44:31):
Before of course.
Speaker 14 (44:32):
But training camp you get a lot of different plays
each day and you don't know who's gonna get in wet.
So that's the that's the exciting challenge that it is, Like, Dan,
you don't even know what rep you're gonna get, so
you gotta be ready for everything. That's how it is,
you know in games also, so dt down the plays,
understand conceptually what it is. I'll say from Ricky Minnie
(44:56):
camp and O T A S to now, I learned
more and depth with everything, you know. So I'm just
excited I'm able to uh have this approach with things
and take full advantage of it.
Speaker 3 (45:08):
What about after practice?
Speaker 14 (45:09):
Oh, after practice, after practice, for sure, I gotta get
a good meal in so that's the first thing, get
a good meal in recovery, of course, and then uh
getna iPad watch everything. Then then I can't give you
too many details, and I try to cause I gotta
when I go in practice, I gotta maximize my moment,
so I gotta study our defense too.
Speaker 8 (45:30):
So that's what it is.
Speaker 6 (45:32):
All of us keep getting asked the same question, and
none of us have the answer.
Speaker 13 (45:36):
So maybe you could give us the answer.
Speaker 2 (45:38):
Why aren't you getting any reps with the ones at
any point?
Speaker 14 (45:41):
Uh, I don't think that's I don't think that's that's
not my place, you know, to answer to, To even
be able to give the answer to that.
Speaker 8 (45:51):
I feel like that's not in my control.
Speaker 14 (45:55):
So I'm not even gonna think about that or have
that even in my thought process of why. It is like,
it's a lot of people that wanna have the opportunity
to be at this level, and I'm here and I'm
thankful to have the opportunity.
Speaker 8 (46:06):
So whenever that is, it is.
Speaker 14 (46:08):
But it doesn't make me feel down or it doesn't
make me feel left out or anything, because I know
who I am as a person, I know who I
am as an individual, and I know what I could
bring to this team. So I can never feel less
than you know, in any circumstance.
Speaker 6 (46:25):
Your dad went down and visited, Yeah, so is he
gonna come here and.
Speaker 14 (46:30):
Visit you as well? Yeah, I'm not sure. I'm not sure.
I'm telling you when I tell you I was cut
off from the world, I ain't it been. It been
hard to even make phone calls, you know, obviously, cause
you gotta have the decompressed time. Uh, for sure, after practice,
So I taught, But recently I've just been following up
with the other former.
Speaker 8 (46:50):
Like Buffalo players and stuff like that. So that's really
who I've been talking to.
Speaker 11 (46:54):
Sure, when you say that, you know, there's been a
little bit of everything as far as when you first
got here to to now just in what regard it's
just as far as like you know, growth and adjusting. Yeah,
but what what's been the most impactful or significant point
for you since you came in, Uh that rookie minie
camps and now as you're getting to the early part
(47:14):
of the better.
Speaker 8 (47:15):
Training camp in the football world. Yeah, it's a lot.
It's hard. It's hard.
Speaker 14 (47:25):
It's hard to answer that because what's important and what
I feel like the biggest thing could have been last week,
is could have what I just learned today or yesterday.
So it's always it's always consistent growth and it always
feels like I just sawve you know, a puzzle or
anything like all the time. So regardless if it's even
(47:46):
relationships with the od line, relationships with the receivers, talking
to Denzel, you know, playing with him, like playing with
all the dbs, different type of stuff like that, is
it's always it's always big, you know, it's always a
big moment. So I can't say what's exactly the biggest moment.
I'll say just even connecting with the kicker like in
(48:07):
the in the sign is just talking about God and everything.
Like it's a lot of different moments and like unscripted
things that just happen, So that could be the biggest moment.
Speaker 15 (48:16):
We heard from Bill Musgrave today. What's it been like
working with him, especially knowing your.
Speaker 14 (48:21):
Dad, Yeah, cause cosmus Grave cool, Yeah, he real cool,
and he always he always tells you definitely old terms
like he he's like a history book, like he tells
you so many stories about different things.
Speaker 8 (48:34):
So it makes it makes the room definitely, you know it.
Speaker 14 (48:39):
It's a bunch of different age ranges in the in
the room, so it makes everything like, dang, he remembers.
Speaker 8 (48:46):
A lot of stuff from back then. I don't know it.
It's new stories every day. So it's like and I'm
fully bought in. I've never met them before coming to
I'm believe.
Speaker 14 (49:00):
I would say, I would say probably in what was
before you got drafted, whatever that was.
Speaker 6 (49:06):
Yeah, well, I mean like I mean, I.
Speaker 8 (49:07):
Guess, yeah, the pre draft process for sure. Yeah, I
mean like before that you had I don't think so,
and I don't remember back then, probably not.
Speaker 10 (49:16):
We know you have a huge followings. Fans are gonna
be out here the first time today, first time you
get the practice in front of Brons fans. What do
you think that's gonna be?
Speaker 8 (49:24):
Like?
Speaker 10 (49:24):
What do you think the receptions can be.
Speaker 14 (49:27):
I'm definitely focused on getting completions when I get out there.
So the external is cool. I'm thankful for and I'm
thankful for all y'all coming out here, being able to
document everything and doing what y'all gotta do. But hey,
when I get out there, I'm not thinking about it external.
I'm thinking about more, you know, in the organization, thinking
about getting the play calls, executing my job, doing what
(49:47):
I gotta do.
Speaker 2 (49:48):
You got time for a couple more.
Speaker 9 (49:50):
You've actually been involved in the community a lot since
coming to helping out fans.
Speaker 2 (49:54):
Like the fire of the affortments.
Speaker 3 (49:56):
What do you think about so far?
Speaker 8 (49:58):
How do you like it? How have you felt with
the fancy and that it's yeah, nah, it's it's it's exciting.
Speaker 1 (50:06):
Uh.
Speaker 14 (50:06):
Whenever we at the KFC thing, it was so many
people there, it's crazy. So it that type of stuff
is just cool because, like I say, you live each
day at a time. You don't know when anything happens.
You know, you could be alive one day and past
the next day. So it's like I like to be
able to at least make my impact and for you
(50:28):
to actually, you know, feel my energy while I'm here,
you know, and while I'm alive, and why anybody else here,
cause who knows. Anybody could get a job somewhere else
and then be gone the next day, you know, and
all you have the last thing is just the last memory.
So I wanna at least make sure you know my
impact and my m. What I'm remember for you know,
here will always be good at any point.
Speaker 11 (50:49):
What do you feel like that the biggest adjustment for
you has been going from college now being here, whether
it's something on the field, whether it's the schedule now
changing off the field.
Speaker 6 (50:57):
What it's been like.
Speaker 8 (50:59):
I would say death.
Speaker 14 (51:02):
Definitely, like Chiloh not being there, I would say that's
the biggest thing. That's the biggest change, Cause, like you know, Charlotte,
he always he's the type to always find out and
set up all like the house and stuff or set
up all the different stuff. So now there's definitely a
lot of responsibilities.
Speaker 8 (51:17):
I I gotta take care.
Speaker 6 (51:19):
Of now.
Speaker 2 (51:21):
Real quick.
Speaker 6 (51:23):
We've seen a lot of guys, you know, come through
your rookies and.
Speaker 11 (51:28):
You know, especially when you're so close to your family.
Speaker 5 (51:32):
You know, some guys do get homesick.
Speaker 7 (51:34):
They they don't adjust well to a new city. It
it doesn't really seem like you're having that problem.
Speaker 4 (51:41):
But I mean, is that s is that?
Speaker 2 (51:43):
Is it so different to be.
Speaker 15 (51:45):
In a completely new environment away from I mean, you're.
Speaker 5 (51:47):
So close to Shiloh, so close to your dad.
Speaker 6 (51:49):
Yeah, how's that gone for you?
Speaker 12 (51:50):
Just to be here and your whole new Digs.
Speaker 8 (51:53):
Well, I got a home here, so I'm comfortable.
Speaker 14 (51:55):
So so so I'm r extremely comfortable and we talk
on FaceTime, so it's no different Like, yeah, we're guys,
Like we're just gonna be on FaceTime. So it's no,
it's no truly difference, I'll say.
Speaker 2 (52:09):
But one thing.
Speaker 8 (52:10):
One thing. He definitely gives me tips and stuff.
Speaker 14 (52:12):
So I've got like a cold press juicer and then
like I've been having to do that because he lived
like three doors down from me in Colorado and I
just walked to his house get juice. But now I
gotta do it myself. So that's the hardest adjustment with everything.
But other than that, I'm thankful for y'all coming out,
you know, thank y'all.
Speaker 3 (52:33):
All right, there you go.
Speaker 2 (52:34):

the Great z is here, and the immortal Bernie Kozar
is here. This is a real treat. We paint a
lot of pictures.
Speaker 3 (53:35):
Burne.
Speaker 2 (53:35):
We've never been able to paint training camp pictures with
the likes of you, my friend.
Speaker 5 (53:38):
I'm super honored to be out here today. And as
much as I want to relive forty years ago training camp,
the elbow is a little deteriorating with its skills, so
we're gonna leave it to our four quarterbacks here to
man the ship.
Speaker 4 (53:53):
Well, yeah, you were talking with Kevin Stefanski and he said,
he do you want me to run a dagger concept
for you?
Speaker 3 (53:57):
Like I want to throw a check down and be
on my way there. Bernie out here at training.
Speaker 5 (54:02):
Camp did remind him of a couple of my more
famous plays of I have on the longest passes and
Cowboy here. That's right, I threw it eighty eight yards.
It was one yard from me to Emma Smith, he
ran eighty seven. But we are here in the spirit
of Cleveland Brown's camp and to talk about that. I
also learn that play from throwing to the great Eric Medcalf,
(54:22):
who would take a two yard checkdown and take it
to the house.
Speaker 6 (54:26):
So really good memories.
Speaker 3 (54:28):
Yes he would. It is awesome. And so you're with
us now on Cleveland Browns Daily.
Speaker 4 (54:32):
But we've got a little bit of news to share
with with our fans as well, and that is that
you're gonna join me after a lot of our training
camp practices for training camp insiders. So we're gonna break
down today the action that we see, will have an
interview with Joe Flacco as well. So I'm excited to
be working with you, and I think that's gonna be
a lot of fun to let people kind of get
inside the mind of the great Bernie Cozar about all
(54:53):
the things you're seeing out here.
Speaker 5 (54:54):
Well, I'm excited to be doing training camp daily with
you breaking it down with let's go baby, you're stuck dating.
Speaker 2 (55:00):
I'm in Bertie. Let's go Bertie. Obviously, the sport has
changed so much. Training camp has changed so much from
the time when you played. I mean one of the
things that I asked Kevin about this at the end
of mini camp we had him on here today. How
can you possibly, in this amount of time, with these
few reps get a quarterback ready, let alone four? How
(55:22):
would you handle this? I mean this obviously would never
happen in your day where you have this limited amount
of time, But in this day and age, how would
you get a quarterback ready?
Speaker 5 (55:30):
Yeah, it's tough, yes, for the quarterback, whether you have
four or not, and or any team now getting him
ready for the start of the season. We say a
stat we start against the Bengals and we see I
think the Bengals are one and ten in their first
two games with Zach Taylor and Joe Burrow. So how
you start and how you practice in training camp? I
(55:52):
made the mistake when we were younger.
Speaker 8 (55:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (55:54):
I love the old school, I love the history and
tradition of what we did, but.
Speaker 5 (55:59):
We probably shortened our careers and the team's careers, and
we probably hurt our efficiency as the team went on.
So I air now on the side of probably a
little less contact from a team perspective at this time
of the year, but that does amplify the issue of
how you get your team and how you get your
quarterbacks ready, and trying to get four guys ready.
Speaker 6 (56:22):
With three preseason games right.
Speaker 5 (56:24):
Now is a tough task. And I love what we're
doing in training camp. I love what we do at practice.
One of the main things those quarterbacks, it's really we
want to focus and say it's live until there's really
the thread of death, the thread of a Miles Garrett
Watts running you over. Okay, Trey Hendrickson if he does
(56:44):
come back, let's stay out for the first week of
the season. But you know, until the thread of that
guy decapitating you, how you really handle yourself as a
quarterback is to be determined, and that is going to
amplify the issue too.
Speaker 4 (56:58):
When you come out here and you watch these quarterbacks,
what are the things that you're looking for. What are
the things that tell you that you like what you see,
that this guy can lead the Cleveland Browns.
Speaker 5 (57:11):
I think, first, if I would have been doing this
show last year, and I would have had to sit here.
Speaker 6 (57:17):
I would have and I'm not hiding from who the
quarterback question is, but first I would go to what's
the system?
Speaker 5 (57:25):
Okay, And I'm not saying it's to be a homer
and not because I'm here with the Browns or I
saw Kevin Stefanski before that. I unequivocally believe in this
system of under center, running the ball in play action.
If unquestionably, I made a mistake at the end of
my career and now happened to be in the Dolphins,
(57:45):
and you guys didn't see it as much, but I
made a massive mistake thinking guy had to be cool
and be the shotgun two minute quarterback call and plays.
The game of football has evolved, we have, but some
things have stayed the same. And it's imperative to be
able to run on the ball, have your hand on
the ground, be under center. So last year's system of spread,
I don't believe is what is continuent and consistent to
(58:08):
do for any team in the NFL. So just first
and foremost, the change to Kevin system will help any
of us qbs. It would have helped me at the
end of my career. It will help these four guys
make a transition into it. So that in itself is
going to make I believe our offense in the quarterbacks
(58:28):
better than.
Speaker 6 (58:29):
We were at this time last year.
Speaker 5 (58:32):
And now, which guy could really handle that play accent?
That played that layering. That's going to happen early. And
I kind of tend towards and it's not an indictment
of anybody, but I tend towards the veterans early because
look at it, it's hard to play good offense. In September.
We have kind of a new offense. We don't know
(58:52):
what the defensive coordinators are.
Speaker 6 (58:54):
Doing against it. It's a lot of creative plays.
Speaker 5 (58:58):
By October of October, you have four or five six
games under your belt, You got your continuity and consistency.
I believe our offensive line will start becoming more like
a glove like we were in Unison a couple of
years ago. I say, implemented this system, and I believe
that's going to massively help the quarterbacks transition, whoever the
one is who wins it.
Speaker 4 (59:19):
So you talked about the system, and you talked about,
you know how that actually helps a quarterback For a
guy like Kenny Pickt. We've all seen Joe Flacko. We
know what he can do across his long career and
certainly in his time here running this offense, and it
was explosive over three hundred yards in every game. But
for a guy like Kenny Pickett, because he would be
in that veteran group, you know, fifteen and ten as
a starter. When he was in Pittsburgh, he never was
in a system that people said would necessarily suit his
(59:41):
skill set. And ironically, when they brought in Arthur Smith,
that probably would have been a system that suited his
skill set, and he was out of there at that point,
goes to Philly. Now he's here with us. Our fans
have seen Kenny Pickett, and they've seen him through the
lens of that's the Steelers quarterback and you know, not
necessarily so prolific throwing the ball, and we don't like him.
Does that system for a guy like Kenny Pickett? Does
(01:00:04):
that matter as much as anything? And perhaps we'll see,
you know, in a good outcome, right, a different Kenny
Pickett here than we saw with the Steelers.
Speaker 6 (01:00:12):
So I absolutely agree with Luria.
Speaker 5 (01:00:14):
I think you're going and I'm gonna sound like just
a homer or just being positive for positive sake.
Speaker 6 (01:00:20):
And I so promise you I'm not. I really believe Kenny.
Speaker 5 (01:00:24):
I love Joe flackwell, of course, but I absolutely believe
Kenny Pickett has not run this type system. He would
have flourished in the Arthur Smith system and will do
very fine in the system. The worrying about he hasn't
done this stuff. He's not as fleet a foot as
some of the others. He's fleet to foot enough. He
has very good pocket awareness. He'll this system will be
(01:00:48):
good for him too. That's what makes coach Kevin Sting
and Andrew Berry's decision so tough. All four of these guys,
you're gonna be able to lay a case why they
could play quarterback within this system and lead the team.
Speaker 2 (01:01:00):
Bernie, when you come out here and you watch and
your eyes go to the quarterbacks, what signs are you
looking for, especially with the two young guys, that they're
getting it? What lets you know?
Speaker 13 (01:01:12):
That?
Speaker 6 (01:01:14):
So great question? You know, whether I'm palking to younger quarterbacks?
Speaker 2 (01:01:19):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (01:01:19):
Look, we're all as humans trying to pretend we're cool,
even me on the show right now.
Speaker 6 (01:01:24):
We're trying to act act again.
Speaker 5 (01:01:28):
Yeah, So the qbs now and acting like you know
what you're doing, believe in what you're doing. There's words
that say that, and then there's your action. So we
all have the right words, but then how do you
back that up? And when you're able to really look
them in the eye see what they're doing, then when
they're able to actually make those plays. So kind of
(01:01:49):
looking at that fire in the eye. We used to
hear the acronym EFNY false enthusiasm.
Speaker 6 (01:01:54):
Yeah, you know, we'll say the right things.
Speaker 5 (01:01:57):
Man, You look into the eye and get into the
soul and a quarterback, you know, in that huddle with
ten guys in there and really embracing the spirit and
soul and getting in there. So what they look back
and gaze into your two eyes, even if you've got
no clue what you're doing, they believe you got it.
Speaker 6 (01:02:15):
And that's and that is an art body language.
Speaker 4 (01:02:19):
And how hard is that that command of the huddle,
that command of the play call. You have to believe
in what you're saying so that they believe in it.
For guys, nowadays, can you mention if you came out
of college, you never called a play in the huddle?
Speaker 6 (01:02:30):
Yeah, so it's that's it's unfathomable for that. And again,
like I in nineteen eighty five, I said it, I
said the right things.
Speaker 5 (01:02:39):
I believe in myself. I know I could do it, yeah,
but I didn't know it until you do it. Yeah,
and then when you really do it, you really do believe.
So like Joe Flacco's done it, you know, can you
pick It's kind of done it, so they will get
it kind of quicker.
Speaker 6 (01:02:55):
The Rooks did it in college and they did it
really good.
Speaker 5 (01:02:58):
And actually like both young quarterbacks because one of the
things that both of them showed is be their their
pocket presence and calmness of their hips and feet.
Speaker 6 (01:03:12):
So it's close.
Speaker 5 (01:03:12):
If the fans are watching on them on the remote
today and seeing how close Nathan is to me. You know,
in a pocket you're able to throw and you're looking
up field, but look it, I'm gonna get clocked from
Nathan right away.
Speaker 6 (01:03:24):
He's two feet from whatever.
Speaker 5 (01:03:27):
But in a in a quarterback, you know, in practice
day we know that he's not getting wiped out, So
you could stay calm, you could stay confident in there
in a game you don't know, and then until that
really happens, and you see how you're gonna respond. And
I noticed, whether it was watching Shador Sanders scrambled last
year or Dylan Gabriel in the heat of battle when
(01:03:48):
they're making plays happened. Their feet and hips stayed calm
and they were able to keep their head up the field.
And for young quarterbacks, death of US quarterbacks is when
the head drops, so to keep still calm, feet head up.
They really make plays around the line of scrimmage. And
that ability to to kind of adapt, I think there's
gonna be good for them.
Speaker 4 (01:04:09):
I looks like we're gonna get some one on ones here,
Kenny Pick said Tillen working on m. J Emerson and
m j Emerson all over him wanting a flag there
may have gotten it, but I thought this pretty good
coverage had every right there.
Speaker 3 (01:04:23):
So we've got the receiver corners here.
Speaker 2 (01:04:28):
There you go, Kenny going first, good cover, Yeah, now
Joe will go go, Joe will go second. Here can't
four inch pythons in honor of the Great hole. There's
flat outs. Woh that was that was right past an
(01:04:51):
ear hole right.
Speaker 4 (01:04:51):
There, that went right over Denzel's shoulder. But Judy couldn't
bring him in there. What did you love about one
on ones?
Speaker 3 (01:04:57):
Bernie?
Speaker 13 (01:04:58):
So?
Speaker 5 (01:04:58):
What I really love about one on and I know
we're fixated and watching the quarterbacks, I would obsess on
fixed you and watching the receivers.
Speaker 6 (01:05:05):
And in this press coverage so aggressive at being physical
and receivers not.
Speaker 5 (01:05:11):
Dancing at the line of scrimmage, getting physical into the
defensive back because technically defensive backs aren't really.
Speaker 6 (01:05:18):
Going to be able to touch and hold you without
getting a penalty.
Speaker 3 (01:05:21):
That's a nice route there from Luke Flory.
Speaker 4 (01:05:23):
That's the first one for the offense there before that
had been pretty much a lockdown, which you don't see
a ton of in one on ones, But the Browns
cornerbacks and secondary that is certainly something that they take
pride in. Right here, that's the end player of gage
of can't even get out of the breaks there.
Speaker 2 (01:05:37):
The two ropes, by the way, should mention down at
the other end.
Speaker 3 (01:05:40):
So they're doing running backs and tight ends.
Speaker 2 (01:05:42):
Yeah, Dylan, and down at the other end, the south
southeast end.
Speaker 4 (01:05:46):
There there's Joe Flakilair's a veteran Deontay Johnson. He's a
guy Bernie pro bowler, former thousand yard season He's somebody
that I think we're gonna need to be able to
kind of recapture some of that form that he's had
in other places.
Speaker 2 (01:05:59):
OB he was in Pittsburgh with Kenny Pickett for a while.
Speaker 5 (01:06:02):
I actually like, I know he's had a underachieving career
at this point, and some people have, you know, not
thinking he's come up to his full potential. I actually
like guys like that because they know this is one
of their last chances, so they need to produce Bernie.
Speaker 2 (01:06:19):
It's so interesting, like watching Kenny throwing down nice completion.
On the other side, Cedric Tillman against m J. Anderson
shoulder Joe Flacco throws the most effortless ball, like.
Speaker 5 (01:06:33):
Yeah, that's I mean that fading through their judy with
Denzel covering him was I was quiet only.
Speaker 6 (01:06:40):
Because it was so artistically beautiful. It was gorgeous, Like
I'm at this, just so artistically beautiful.
Speaker 4 (01:06:49):
The receiver is getting it going a little bit now.
It's a nice back shoulder throw from picket there because
MJ had great coverage, Tilma was able to go up
there and get it. Caden Davis now working picket on
a deep end. I means gotta be up. There's the
straps thing.
Speaker 6 (01:07:04):
I know that kids do that.
Speaker 2 (01:07:06):
They're big on the straps.
Speaker 4 (01:07:07):
It's pretty tough when we're this far away and you
can see the jersey in his hand. We're on the
offensive side, right, Bernie. Oh, nice little double move from Florida.
But good recovery, great recovery. Ball hung a little bit
in the air from Kenny picket probably like a little
less air under that one, and that's an easy touchdown.
Speaker 5 (01:07:26):
Oh, Judy, geez, Yeah, good point, Nathan Kenny, you'll figure
that out. In Cleveland Stadium, you see Joe throwing his
fades with sauce and flat and when when you get
too much wind down to the stadium and you're a
little too much arc on it, you want to get
it up and down, especially in windy conditions.
Speaker 3 (01:07:44):
Get it there, especially when the guys open. Get it there.
Speaker 4 (01:07:46):
Mj Emer sitting with the PBu. Great coverage there on
Cedric Tillman, Bertie, Let's talk about for a second we've
had since we haven't talked to you, the big announcement.
There will be an enclosed Huntington Bank Field in brook Park,
and I imagine domes for quarterbacks are our music to
their ears, no elements, no well.
Speaker 5 (01:08:05):
For I was with Mayor Mayor Ed and the you know,
God blessed our northeast Ohio. What's happening in Cleveland, But
what's happening with brook Park and Mayor ed and the
development for the state of Ohio. I just think it
is unbelievably well, what's what's happening there with it? But
(01:08:25):
as a guy who was a five to five running
quarterback who is incredibly unathletic, I needed those bad conditions
to bring.
Speaker 2 (01:08:33):
To bring the players down to my level.
Speaker 6 (01:08:35):
But now, as an old man in.
Speaker 5 (01:08:37):
My sixties, I so want to go to an indoor
man cave to enjoy the fruits of our labor, but
to be able to showcase our state. Okay, and it
has things like Super Bowls and National championship games and
is just exciting To be.
Speaker 3 (01:08:53):
Part of it is exciting.
Speaker 4 (01:08:54):
So they just finished on each side one rep by
the way, that was a heck of a ball from
Kenny Pickett right there.
Speaker 3 (01:08:59):
It just was not caught by yeah, Gage Lardovin.
Speaker 4 (01:09:02):
But on the other side it was the tight ends
and the running backs, and I saw the defense doing
push ups down there. So that means that either Dylan
Gabriel or should do or got one for the positive
on the offensive side.
Speaker 3 (01:09:15):
But one on ones are fun.
Speaker 4 (01:09:16):
That's always my favorite thing about the first day of pads,
the padd first day of padded one on ones, you know,
and you.
Speaker 5 (01:09:20):
So stutey pointed out how effortlessly and gorgeously Joe Flacco
throws the ball.
Speaker 6 (01:09:26):
You know, silky.
Speaker 5 (01:09:27):
If I could reflect back on maybe myself and some
mistakes I made.
Speaker 6 (01:09:32):
Is I had to overthrow.
Speaker 5 (01:09:34):
I wanted to throw spiral so at times, not only overpractice,
but you would overthrow in training camp. So Joe Flacco
have an eighteenth year being in training camp being able
to mechanically and effortlessly throw and then save his arm
too for the duration that I'm really smart.
Speaker 3 (01:09:52):
That is a good thing. Give Bay, how much rope
do I have here?
Speaker 4 (01:09:55):
And if I want to try to get us a
little bit of a vantage point here, because it looks like.
Speaker 2 (01:09:58):
We're gonna go room, we're gonna you have to pop
that under the table.
Speaker 3 (01:10:03):
All that.
Speaker 4 (01:10:05):
We got eleven on elevens for those wondering it is
Carson Sweessinger at the mike linebacker position with the retirement
of Jordan Hicks. That looks like Joe Flacco under center
for the Browns here and there's a run to the
right side. And Mason Graham, he's been a guy that, really,
when you're watching him in these situations, has started to
make a lot of plays. He was on the ground there.
You want to see everybody's staying up. But this is
(01:10:27):
gonna be such a tough front, Bernie. And when the
way Jim Schwartz does it, you know they're getting up
the field and they're able to go all out because
they know they're going in waves. It's like, give me
what you got for a few plays and we're gonna
get somebody else in there who's gonna go after that quarterback.
Speaker 5 (01:10:40):
When I think of Jim Schwartz and the rushing up
upfield defense, I can't think of the great Doug Deacon
say getting ready for the.
Speaker 6 (01:10:47):
Wide nine alignments.
Speaker 4 (01:10:50):
You see try and showy inco well out there. Wide
play action from Flacco comes back to the left, tipped
at the line of bage there. That was bad and ball.
I don't see anybody doing that. The Ken Bam Tumbo
taking credit for it, but it looked like a bad ball.
As he was looking for David Djoku in the left flat.
Speaker 3 (01:11:06):
This is fun.
Speaker 4 (01:11:07):
It's it's not quite football, but it's as close as
we're going to get for a little while.
Speaker 3 (01:11:11):
And that's fun.
Speaker 5 (01:11:11):
You know, bias towards the Dave and a jok who
shout out and part of the implementation matter, the you
and you matter.
Speaker 6 (01:11:19):
But even apart from that.
Speaker 5 (01:11:20):
The implementation back at Kevin's offense and a miss so
missed the multiple tight ends last year and I believe
with the draft pick tight end and with Dave and
a Joker, you're going to see more of that twelve
personnel and that's going to help our running game in
our play action game.
Speaker 4 (01:11:38):
And there they were having a shotgun inside of Dylan Samson,
who looked like he had a nice little hole there.
And he's got the first SEC Offensive Player of the year.
Speaker 2 (01:11:44):
Durability will be he's in smaller dude, and so that's
that's part of it. But yeah, I mean he was
I mean, he didn't play much in the High State
game and they obviously felt the brun of that. Bernie
was going to ask you about because one of the
weaknesses on this team, I think, you know, Nathan and
I talked about we ranked the position groups like Jerry
Judy at the time very very strong. But then that
room needs a lot of guys to really step up.
But could the solution to that also come from the
(01:12:07):
tight end room and more of a focus on David
More and now Harold Fannon, who could play in the
slot a lot. Is does it matter where it comes from?
I guess so.
Speaker 5 (01:12:17):
The short answer, and not in the spirit of being
a Homer, is absolutely you could create stuff like this.
And then the great words of my awesome mentor, Gary Danielson,
who's still announcing.
Speaker 6 (01:12:30):
Still college games and stuff.
Speaker 5 (01:12:32):
Gary Danielson said that you can't stay regularly Dow does
not have to go to four and five receivers on
third down and second and long, so we have success
with multiple tight ends.
Speaker 6 (01:12:44):
I actually think doing multiple tight ends on second and long.
Speaker 5 (01:12:48):
Third and mediums, third and shorts for sure should be
part of our game plan.
Speaker 4 (01:12:52):
We try to get them in that base defense and
then take advantage of that third linebacker. So going to
the second team, now that was a blown up screen
there that d was all over. This is the first
time we've seen this. Kenny Pickett working with the second
team in these eleven on eleven periods, a little run
to the right side and a nice bounce out there
from the undrafted free agent Marshall. Right now, you've got
Pierre Strong, you've got Samson, you've got Marshall in the backfield,
(01:13:15):
Jerome Fod not ready to go. Obviously, we know what's
going on with Quinn Shawn Judkins. So these are the
running backs here. I'm kind of surprised we haven't got
another one. I saw Legs in camp.
Speaker 2 (01:13:25):
Ride receiver signing this morning and wondering if if maybe
there needed to be a running back one as well.
Speaker 4 (01:13:30):
Potentially, Yeah, and if we can't get our snaps going,
we're gonna need even more. We're gonna need more stuff
going on into that room as well. Canny Pickett now
with the second team, was Flacco with the first team
in the eleven on eleven Which is good to see
Picket dropping back under pressure scrambles, they come out to
(01:13:51):
the right and he is a much better athlete and
runner obviously in his time.
Speaker 5 (01:13:58):
Better And and if people were watching what Kenny Pickett
that they're even in practice moving up in the pocket.
Young quarterbacks, you tend to drop your head like I'm
looking in the camera right now, really imperative, keep your
eyes look him downfieled and Kenny kept his eyes downfilled.
He has the opportunity to as you approached the line
(01:14:18):
to still make a throw like that.
Speaker 6 (01:14:21):
In that case, he ended up running it.
Speaker 2 (01:14:22):
At this point, Bernie's making earlier though too. And we
just saw it and you know, come to life right
here on the practice field where he's plenty fast enough.
Oh yeah, like he's he's got enough scoot. I mean,
he's plenty elusive. It ain't ran for a lot of
yards at pit too.
Speaker 4 (01:14:35):
Yeah, And we saw it last year Joe Burrow, who
they said wasn't much of a runner, go for what
fifty four? I think it was against the Giant's longest
run of his career. And I'll goold laugh about that.
On quarterback they were talking about that wasn't the longest
run his career. They ended up showing highlights of him
in like Pop Warner football run like eighty yards. All right,
So back to the one. So this is again, this
is a new kind of we have not seen this.
(01:14:56):
As they ramp up here on Day three, Flacco under center,
pitch right, try to get a cutback, and there's nowhere
to go against this defensive front. I think this front
especially we get my callback here, Bernie. The addition to
Mason Graham, Eliite Collins, who is a professional pass rusher
in the middle, you bring in try and Shoyinka, he's
a former first rounder. They've got a lot of guys
up front, and right now, try and show inca run
(01:15:18):
with the ones there you go opposite of Miles Garrett.
So you'd have right now with the guys that are
out there, you got three first round picks on that line.
Speaker 5 (01:15:25):
And if you've got to have talent and excessive talent
on the D line, that's essential to have it there.
With the way teams, yes, you need pass pressure, but
the way teams are now starting to run the ball
within our division, and particularly with Baltimore and Pittsburgh, to
be able to match up with a line like that
to neutralize the other team's offensive lines imperatively important.
Speaker 3 (01:15:46):
Oh, Bernie, that would have been one that you liked, right, sir.
Speaker 4 (01:15:49):
So the Browns came out in thirteen personnel ran the
hard play action looking for a shot, and the Browns
defensive line said, we have other ideas and the ball
was not thrown and that's kind of been one of
the stories of the early going. And you expect that,
right Bernie, the defense to be ahead of the offense
early in camp.
Speaker 5 (01:16:04):
Yeah, and you're not really allowed to bang and hit
plays right now. So thirteen personnel is typically a run personnel,
and teams that are going to play the pass and
pass rush against that, coach Stefanski will be giving them
a big dose of power football, if that's if that
would be the case.
Speaker 2 (01:16:22):
Bernie, How cognizant were you, guys? And so different? I mean,
I'm sure you were already in pads at this point.
You're probably doing two a days, maybe three days, who
knows compared to you know, how little work we get
to put in now. But how cognizant were you?
Speaker 6 (01:16:32):
Guys?
Speaker 2 (01:16:33):
Of you hear that old line about taking care of
each other your teammates, Like, was that something that was
even discussed in your era?
Speaker 5 (01:16:40):
You kind of tried to discuss it if you were
a wily veteran who could be a dictator.
Speaker 6 (01:16:47):
Basically, it was preservation and.
Speaker 5 (01:16:49):
So much of Like there were so many guys on
the team that were vying for spots and there wasn't
guaranteed contracts, So it was kind of kill or be killed,
you know, to.
Speaker 2 (01:17:00):
The team gladiators. Man, it's crazy like this brutal to
what we know now compared to the you know, the
way that it was done for so long.
Speaker 4 (01:17:07):
By the way, speaking of right now, we have not
gotten a pass off yet. Joe Flacco right there fleshed
out Joe Tranchoy ink Adam Zack ended up tossing to
the ball boys in one of those beautiful looking bucket
hats for the season here, very nice looking bucket hats
this year. But this Brown's defensive front is going hopefully
this continues, is going to be a problem.
Speaker 3 (01:17:24):
But this isn't It's a good offensive line right now.
Speaker 4 (01:17:26):
And that pressure coming off of the right side of
that offensive line is Kenny Pickett, is it? Is it
Picket peck in there with the twos. Yeah, So this
is the first time we've seen that a sequence of
ones and twos only and only the veteran quarterbacks here
and see if maybe Pickett can get something going, try
to runt the outside. Jerome Baker had that one well
sniffed out. The veteran who's gonna have to play a
big role now in might have the retirement of Jordan Hicks,
(01:17:48):
and the fact that obviously Jeremiahusu Kormo will be unavailable
this year.
Speaker 5 (01:17:53):
You know, I'm digressing back to your question about did
we take care of ourselves in the old day? In
one respect to reminds me of his stories, I'm looking
at the gold post.
Speaker 3 (01:18:01):
You know.
Speaker 5 (01:18:01):
Typically at first when I came in, I wasn't the
starting quarterback, Gary Danielson. So I'm the backup quarterback. So
the backup quarterback typically in that day was the holder
and stuff. If I massively improve it holding, I will
then suck.
Speaker 6 (01:18:15):
I'm so bad at it. So I did not want
to do that.
Speaker 5 (01:18:20):
Okay, So Matt Barr is our kicker, and like he's good,
so like I don't want to hold for him and
get hurt. So we have the backup kicker. Come and
I pull a Charlie Brown, Lucy, I pull it out
home sell, he pulls his hammy, he goes, he goes on.
I r for two weeks. He was gonna get whacked
(01:18:41):
because Barr was going to be the kicker. So he
loved me because he got two months.
Speaker 6 (01:18:44):
Of salary and an accredited season.
Speaker 2 (01:18:48):
That's nice.
Speaker 4 (01:18:49):
That's nice too's out there, good pressure from mguire and
right mean, that's he talked about just waves on this
defensive it's got to be the success.
Speaker 2 (01:18:57):
Yeah, for us to have success, that front and that
backend has got to be among the very best in
the sport. It really does.
Speaker 4 (01:19:03):
Picky did a good job right there, flushing out to
the right, finding Luke Floory on a little comebacker and
that was probably the first positive pass play we've had.
Speaker 2 (01:19:12):
And his coach was on with us. They're not in
pads what do you call them, spider shell, spider or
something like that, kind of like a more of a
lightweight shoulder pad situation. So that's where and you get
a little bit of physicality with this. I mean you're
grabbing and you're pushing and shoving and stuff, so you
get a little bit of that before you ramp up
to full contact next week.
Speaker 4 (01:19:30):
It's definitely more physical than we've seen at this portion
of training camp in the last few years. I know,
they're taking care of each other, they're not going to
the ground, but people are going hard and people end
up on the ground in those situations. Right there, Pierre
Strong ended up on the ground at the end of
that that toss play, and that reminds me kind of
I haven't seen us run.
Speaker 3 (01:19:45):
The tosses quite like that.
Speaker 4 (01:19:47):
Bernie reminds me of when Kyle Shanahan was here in
twenty fourteen. And those is the toss in zone still,
it's still the zone concept. But he just wants to
get the ball yeah, to the back as quick as possible.
Let him start to read the flow.
Speaker 5 (01:19:58):
Yeah, And that's not the old qu like stupid body right,
it's actually like a quick screen. We actually called boss
back on strong safety support and it's kind of a
zone read with the full back. H back come back
and take out the secondary support which should be the
strong safety.
Speaker 4 (01:20:16):
So that was a keeper there. Can he Pickett with
the play actions? The Browns called those play action boots.
It was a playfake on a run to the right,
keeps it back to the left. He's running left, flips
his hips. Had a one on one down the field
for Caden Davis, but good coverage again and that one
was almost picked off.
Speaker 2 (01:20:32):
Looks like Dylan Gabriel going to get this rep here
with the ones. So Dylan Gabriel now with the ones, Yeah,
and it's the one offense. So Dylan was going to
go with the ones against the one defense here, this
is a massive opportunity for him.
Speaker 3 (01:20:46):
So it's some of the one defense.
Speaker 4 (01:20:48):
It's it's great Usome and it's MJ but it's some
of the backup linebackers, some of the starters on the line,
but Denzel, Denzel starts. It's the one corners. Yeah, Gabriel
looking looking looking and that would have been assibly another sack.
Again this right now, defense it is not fair. It
is defensive domination. And now that one is more concerning
(01:21:08):
to me because that's Cam Thomas, it's it's Mason Graham,
so it isn't but I didn't end Miles, so that
is that's there. Cam Thomas is in opposite Miles. But
it's three of the four starters there, starters at cornerback
as well, and it looks like your backup safeties and
backup lif hey.
Speaker 5 (01:21:26):
So this is half levity, okay, and half seriousness to
Nathan said earlier about our offensive bias here.
Speaker 6 (01:21:33):
And I love coach Schwartz, but I'm old enough to
be on some staffs.
Speaker 5 (01:21:38):
Where he was on back in the day here in
the nineties, and when the defensive alignment in these early
stages of training camp, and we didn't have pads on.
Speaker 6 (01:21:47):
Used to drive us offensive guys nuts.
Speaker 5 (01:21:50):
They rush, they rush, they stand up like trees and
we can't chop them down like we're gonna do in
a game.
Speaker 4 (01:21:58):
Another one for Dylan here under center, that's a run
play and out the other side was Pierre Strong.
Speaker 3 (01:22:06):
He's got some acceleration.
Speaker 4 (01:22:07):
And you know, right now, you'd say for Pierre Strong
once after the draft, you would say, Okay, probably a
long shot. But where we are right now, he has
an opportunity, you know, to really try to seize a
role on this football team because of the uncertainty in
that position, and that's a position that we can't really
afford uncertainty. That's going to be such a huge part
of our identity. Burnie, you talk about getting under center,
(01:22:28):
being able to run the ball. If you're going to
be a team that's gonna win by playing good defense,
being mistake f you on offense, running and then using
that play action to hit shots where they are available,
you gotta be able to run it first.
Speaker 5 (01:22:39):
Yeah, high school colleges and even pro teams, and you've
seen this at the beginning of the first two practices.
When you see people report on what's been happening on offensive,
then you hear all the legal procedure couple drop snaps.
For the fans out there, don't lose your mind. That
happens the beginning of training camp. And because we were
mostly and most teams have been shotgunned most of their
(01:23:01):
life to go to under center, you're gonna have some
of those issues here in camp, so to get them
out of our system now and to stay with them
because during the season you're gonna need the under center
snap exchanges.
Speaker 4 (01:23:14):
But I just play there a little kind of a
fake run and they turned around and toss it on
a reverse the cad and Dave's now in there, and
this is the threes.
Speaker 3 (01:23:21):
This is Chadour with the threes and hopefully that line can.
Speaker 2 (01:23:24):
Do as Baker's in on this At linebacker.
Speaker 3 (01:23:27):
Good specially needs all the reps he can get.
Speaker 4 (01:23:30):
Shotgun to Shador looking quick on a quick out complete
to the sideline there to Luke Floria, who has been
pretty much the one guy that's been able to get
the football spent in this session. But Chadoor decisive. How
important is that Bernie coming into the National Football League
from the college game where the windows closed quicker, The
(01:23:52):
time to throw is significantly quicker to be decisive like
Shador was on that play. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:23:57):
And and a lot of a lot of high school
college kids don't have the anticipation they throw in high
school and college to open receivers because they tend to
be wide open and stuff. When I was impressed with
Shador in film study even before the draft was his anticipation.
I didn't have that early anticipation until my second or
(01:24:19):
third year in the NFL.
Speaker 6 (01:24:21):
To be able to let it go early like he
did in college and then nowhere to go with it
is impressive.
Speaker 3 (01:24:28):
A lot of people talk about that line at Colorado.
Speaker 4 (01:24:30):
Yeah, and it probably can lead to some bad habits, yes,
but it can also lead probably to some good habits
where you know that if I get the look that
I want, and I know what they're doing, and I
know where I'm supposed to go with the ball, and
I have to read this one player and that determines
where the ball goes, which is a lot of what
these offenses are, that'll probably get you in some good
habits knowing I got to get this ball out.
Speaker 5 (01:24:49):
Yeah, And It makes you accelerate your game. It makes
you be a lot more resourceful. And then again it
calls you out right away if you can't stay calm
feet or move, if you got happy feet, if you're
patent the baby, all those little signs that come up,
he's not doing any of those.
Speaker 4 (01:25:08):
That's what I'm doing the baby. A lot of burbro
the baby right there. That was a play action keeper
right there. Shador with a good job getting out to
the tight end. Brendan Bates and that was that was
a smoother operation there all around.
Speaker 2 (01:25:19):
Yeah, it really was. We will continue to paint the
pictures of training Camp day number three. On the other
side of this quick time out, you listen to Cleveland
Browns Daily on eight fifty ESPN.
Speaker 1 (01:25:28):
Cleveland Cleveland Browns Daily presented by Bally Bete, an official
sports betting partner of your Cleveland Browns on eight fifty
esp and Cleveland.
Speaker 2 (01:25:44):
Hell can help serious lawyer Serious injuries called one eight
hundred elch Ohio for a free case for you. Elkin
Elk is a proud partner of your Cleveland Browns. That
was fun Man eleven on eleven's How and this was
you mentioned this well, it was happening first time that
we had seen with the ones v ones in that
Picket went second, Then Gabriel got some ones versus mostly ones,
(01:26:06):
and then Chaudeur at the end got some threes, and
then there were a couple of ones in at linebacker
as well. So really a long look at all of
the quarterbacks and the offense, and I would be kidding
and it would be not truthful for me to say
it when anything other than not great offensively.
Speaker 3 (01:26:21):
No, it did not.
Speaker 4 (01:26:21):
It was dominated by the defensive lines up there now there,
and I love it on living period.
Speaker 3 (01:26:25):
That's just kind of walked through pace. They're just getting
looks and walking through.
Speaker 4 (01:26:28):
The quarterbacks aren't throwing the ball or doing some of
the pointing and whatnot as they continue to ramp up
here before the pads come on next week. No, that
was that was definitely dominated by the defensive front in particular.
In fact, I don't know Flac or Picket were really
able to get a lot of passes off there.
Speaker 3 (01:26:46):
Gabriel was not.
Speaker 4 (01:26:47):
And then Chadour at the end got a couple of
quick hitters that he executed well against the threes. But
you know, kind of going back to it unless things
change right now, you know, I think you're looking at
as we always said, Picket or Flacco are going to
start at the beginning, and it feels like Gabriel is
going to get currently more opportunities and Shador really has
not gotten opportunities to showcase himself outside of you know,
(01:27:12):
being with the threes, and so sure, if that doesn't change,
then you can go ahead and say he is not
going to be You could definitively say he's not going
to get an opportunity to be the starter early in
this football season. But we'll see how this thing evolves
as it goes on. That's what I think is going
to be more interesting where it starts and then what
it evolves to at that position.
Speaker 6 (01:27:31):
Well.
Speaker 2 (01:27:31):
Also, my goodness, you think about I mean, we only
get to see him for this little time that they're
on the field, but it's an all day evaluation, of course,
and the meeting rooms are so poor of that stuff.
And when Kevin was with us and he was telling
us about everyone in that room, these four guys, him, Bill, Tommy, Deshaun,
I mean there's it's a massive room of quarterbacks, yeah,
with a lot of experience and offensive minds with a
(01:27:52):
lot of experience.
Speaker 4 (01:27:52):
Yeah, they've all played, They've all played the position. There
isn't a single person there that didn't play at a
very high level. Tommy obviously in college, and Bill Musgrave
makeing into the football league along with the rest of them.
So there is a lot of knowledge. Bertie, what goes
on in those quarterback rooms. You're gonna have this practice, right,
You're gonna go in there, you're gonna watch the film together.
Speaker 2 (01:28:10):
What is that?
Speaker 6 (01:28:11):
What is that like?
Speaker 2 (01:28:13):
Yeah, you know what I was as you were saying that.
Speaker 5 (01:28:15):
I was kind of reflected back on an interview. I
saw Joe Flacco a week or two ago, maybe it
was a month ago, but he was talking about asking
are you a mentor to the young quarterbacks are there?
Speaker 6 (01:28:27):
And he didn't say I'm a mentor. Matter of fact,
he said, no, I'm not a mentor, but.
Speaker 5 (01:28:32):
For the young quarterbacks and for people out there listening,
and for you if you're in that room.
Speaker 6 (01:28:37):
And you're a young quarterback just watching what he does.
Speaker 5 (01:28:40):
He is mentoring by how he conducts himself, how he
threw that fade against Denzel to Judy, how he's going
to talk to coach Musgraves and coach Reeves afterwards when
they all watch that play together, the younger quarterbacks to
watch how he's handled himself and even can he Pickett
as a veteran to be able to be around Joe Flacco.
(01:29:02):
This is enormously positive for the young guys and even
coaches to be able to listen to see what's kept
you in the league.
Speaker 3 (01:29:11):
When you played.
Speaker 4 (01:29:12):
Was there the access to you know, you'd add of
a practice and then you'd be able to immediately go
in and watch your reps on film?
Speaker 3 (01:29:17):
Was it that quick?
Speaker 6 (01:29:19):
No matter of fact.
Speaker 5 (01:29:20):
The jealousy, the jealousy today of the way I mean,
I used to run down a faxed copy of.
Speaker 2 (01:29:29):
The pre snap alignment of.
Speaker 5 (01:29:31):
The defense and I thought that was the greatest thing
since Christmas morning.
Speaker 6 (01:29:35):
Okay, so let.
Speaker 5 (01:29:36):
Alone to have a laptop of your plays, or to
immediately go in after the film after practice and not
need I'm gonna really show my age, not need the
splice her for the eight millimeter to cut it off
would be really helpful.
Speaker 2 (01:29:50):
Bernie, you mentioned you get nostalgia. There's a couple of
guys out there in the bright orange cleats and I
just can't help but think of Webster slaughter spray painting
up those cleats that bright orange. I see some of
those out there, Buddy, man.
Speaker 5 (01:30:03):
I can't I digrassed with those beautiful orange cleats. Who
I used to love throwing a fade to Webster Langy
going for touchdowns on it.
Speaker 6 (01:30:12):
But I remember the first time an old municipal stadium
with that little.
Speaker 5 (01:30:16):
Box locker room in there, and these guys are like
in there with all the spray paint cans and buzzing
away like were buzzed on paint spray and in this thing.
Speaker 2 (01:30:27):
Come on, cut me some slack.
Speaker 3 (01:30:30):
Outdoors.
Speaker 2 (01:30:31):
They weren't Nike wasn't making them. To make up yourself.
Speaker 5 (01:30:34):
This is right in the showers, okay, doubled is our
locker room.
Speaker 2 (01:30:39):
That's great in between m Ris right right, Uh, this
is good. That's great.
Speaker 3 (01:30:47):
Little special teams to wrap things up here.
Speaker 2 (01:30:49):
That's it, gentlemen.
Speaker 6 (01:30:51):
Oh there you go.
Speaker 2 (01:30:52):
Not even what a time to be alive. This was great, Bernie.
This was so much fun, mane any brother, and it
was great to to paint the pictures. These are some
