Speaker 1 (00:05):
Welcome to this post game edition of the From the
Podium podcast. I'm Gabe Kolera. The Browns fell in Week
six in Pittsburgh to the Steelers by a final score
of twenty three to nine. On this episode, you'll hear
from head coach Kevin Stefanski, quarterback Dylan Gabriel, and defensive
end Miles Garrett. We start with head coach Kevin Stefanski,
who gave his thoughts on the loss.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Yeah, you can't do those things and expect to go
on the road and win, and just frustrated to not
play clean football on offense, defense and special teams. Just
can't do it on the road first, a good football team,
and we got to get it fixed, because you know,
before you start winning, you gotta stop losing. We're doing
(00:44):
some things right now that are preventing us from winning.
So we'll get a fixed with that. I'll take any questions.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
One offense, Well, yeah.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
I don't think it's as simple as that, Zach. Obviously
today we weren't able to run the ball effect and
then got uh behind there two t uh in in
the second half.
Speaker 3 (01:07):
You know, ero for three in the red zone.
Speaker 2 (01:09):
I know those are two minute drives, Uh it a
lot of them, but uh, we gotta gotta find a
way to to score points, gotta run the ball efficiently,
gotta find a way to be better in the past
game all all the above what.
Speaker 4 (01:24):
Some of the Steelers did. Did you been running over
something that?
Speaker 2 (01:28):
Yeah, I mean I obviously give credit to your opponent,
but we just, uh we gotta do a better jobs.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
Is there any thoughts mean you getting old home, tallest
offense and.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
Get Yeah, there's a lot of things that we need
to do better. And obviously I'll look at all things
some of you will consider. There's there's a long list
of things we gotta do better.
Speaker 5 (01:48):
Kind of Uh you Dylan was basically beat off this
home kind or game hit sixteen times, save six times?
Uh can need you know? He really didn't have much
of a chance so many as to help.
Speaker 4 (02:02):
Yeah, can you just talk about when.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
Yeah, he's a tough kid. We gotta keep him clean.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
Obviously when the game turns into how it turned a
two score game, Uh, you have to drop back, and
that's a tough team to drop back versus.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
But he he kept battling.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
Wasn't for a lack of effort by him or or
by anybody made some plays, but uh, we just gotta
be better. Tumbled something from Yeah, I think you learn
in every game, win, loser, draw, And obviously we know
this kid's tough. We know he's tough, He's gonna keep fighting.
We just gotta around him, make some plays. We gotta
coach him up. Uh, we gotta be better. Uh, and
(02:38):
getting our guys in position, all all the above, Kevin, how.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
Do you think Tyson given his first game the game
was there any on?
Speaker 4 (02:49):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (02:49):
I thought Tyson, uh, you know, did a good job
considering when he got on.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
Campus, got him up to speed. Uh.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
Obviously they have a great player over there, made a play,
but uh really was pleased with how he was able
to to get up to speed in this game.
Speaker 4 (03:01):
Just any wan.
Speaker 5 (03:04):
Have a bit about it?
Speaker 4 (03:05):
All the issue worse?
Speaker 2 (03:07):
No, Yeah, we Uh, we were just trying to fight
there till the end. You I think you went six pies,
but they were costly.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
Yep, they were.
Speaker 4 (03:17):
You know how disappointed? How do you I guess?
Speaker 2 (03:19):
Yeah, very disappointed. You know the first Jerry's a leader
for us.
Speaker 6 (03:24):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
I think he was a retaliation type thing. And and
we've preached that we teach that we don't. We can't
do that. Uh and those are real yards uh that
that that are hard to overcome.
Speaker 3 (03:32):
So uh, we have to be better.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
Got gotta again, it gets to the point of need
to make sure you're playing clean.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
Uh, then give yourself a chance.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
It's it's hard when you when you uh you know,
make life harder on yourself.
Speaker 7 (03:47):
You tell what you've talked about, how it drops haven't
been an issue practice, But they're out there again today.
Speaker 4 (03:52):
What are you seeing? I guess contribute to day.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
I just gotta keep working.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
Yeah, no, no, nothing technically, Uh, just gotta keep working.
Speaker 4 (04:01):
How would you just still in second start? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (04:04):
Uh, Like we talked about, I think he uh he
was battling. Uh obviously not good enough offensively and that's
players and coaches, but he was battling.
Speaker 6 (04:11):
Yeah, the offensive line situation, specifically the tackle situation. Just
I mean, it seems like every time you you think
you you you got the answer solved or look toward
the solution, a another problem creates. I mean, just how
frustrating is it and how I mean, where do you
go from here to?
Speaker 2 (04:29):
Kind of Yeah, we'll just coach up the guys that
got Obviously we know, injuries are part of this game, Chris,
and we just we expect the guys that are out
there to go perform, but we'll get them coached up
when you we'll.
Speaker 6 (04:38):
Get your roster.
Speaker 4 (04:39):
You know, all the workies that.
Speaker 5 (04:41):
You had out there today.
Speaker 4 (04:43):
Uh, I mean, these guys just are.
Speaker 5 (04:44):
Gonna have to grow up the fast against teams like
this and just deal with uh just cross physical natuas.
Speaker 4 (04:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
I I think you know our young players Mary kay,
Like we've talked about that, they all work very hard.
You know that they're they're gonna make young mistakes because
they're young players. But really like how this team, how
that group battles, so they they will only get better.
Speaker 3 (05:10):
Do Yeah, all of the above, all the ni name something,
we got to do it better.
Speaker 5 (05:19):
Just how uh can you put into words just how
disappointing the frustrating study it is to come in here
and have this kind of.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
Game is kind of a little Yeah, this is the NFL.
It's uh, it's uh. We have to be better and
that's a that's the the we. I have to be
better for this football team. Our coaches have to be
better for this football team, our players have to be
better for this football team. But bottom line is there's
things that will hold you back from winning and you
gotta knock.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
Those out so you give yourself a chance.
Speaker 4 (05:49):
Where did you see the growth in.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
The first Yeah?
Speaker 2 (05:54):
Another young player, Uh that we're counting on. You know,
we trust him does does a nice job in these games.
I obviously we we have a ton of confidence in
them as well.
Speaker 4 (06:03):
Ruh Uh. You know though you have a lot of
workings this year.
Speaker 6 (06:05):
Go there's a lot of guys who know four and
nineteen over the last twenty three games.
Speaker 4 (06:10):
How concerned you're bout keeping those guys with the program? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (06:14):
Uh, we're focused on what's in front of us, Tony,
I understand the question. But uh, our teams focused on
on what they got in front of him.
Speaker 5 (06:21):
Do you think there's a risk and can you keep
talking to jeredy or Jered you keep spreading more and
hearing more about the drops? Is it just kind of
beat on itself?
Speaker 2 (06:29):
And Yeah, he's been in this he's been playing this
game for a long time. I think he's got great confidence.
I have a ton of confidence in him. Ball's gonna
keep coming his way.
Speaker 7 (06:39):
And then uh, it's how see who's gone one in
five offense of the seasons almost How do you just
sort of go about keeping and things positive at all?
Speaker 3 (06:51):
Sh Yeah.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
I think with our football team, ya, I know we
have young players, but we have a bunch of veterans
that understand, uh what we have in front of us.
They understand, you know, we're not uh in in the
business of looking behind.
Speaker 3 (07:02):
We're just not. We gotta focus on what's in front
of us.
Speaker 5 (07:04):
On the h not being clean where jillis and nouns
doctorship was there? I mean, were you surprised that you
didn't docussion?
Speaker 2 (07:13):
I did not see the play. I s I'd know
the result of the penalty, but I'd not see the play.
Speaker 4 (07:18):
Did you see the running you do a part?
Speaker 3 (07:20):
Uh? Yes? Do recall? Yeah? Uh uh you know it's hard, I.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
Tell you put out the the younger players from learning
the wrong habits, are taking the right lessons.
Speaker 4 (07:35):
From your strutch.
Speaker 3 (07:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
I I think, like we talked about, you learn when
loser draw, and it's it's frustrating in these moments of course. Uh,
But I got guys in there that understand what's in
front of us. They understand, uh, the things that we
have to clean up, and then we got leadership on
the football team that will bring the young guys along.
Speaker 4 (07:51):
Someone would live doing. Do you worry a little bit
rotating or a tackle and the drops issues that that
could voting him to be about environment?
Speaker 3 (08:02):
Yeah, we just uh he he's got to operate, uh I.
Speaker 2 (08:07):
Regardless of what's going on around you. Their injuries are
a part of every football team, so uh yeah, he's
just got to keep continuing to stack these uh games,
stack these reps.
Speaker 5 (08:16):
Do you well say, what can you see about how
Jerry larger operated involved?
Speaker 3 (08:22):
Are probably right? Yeah, great player.
Speaker 2 (08:25):
Obviously they uh you know again, give them credit, give
their offense credit, their defense credit.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
Did a nice job.
Speaker 2 (08:30):
But he uh he was was accurate throughout the day,
made plays, did a good.
Speaker 1 (08:35):
Job up next quarterback deal in Gabriel.
Speaker 8 (08:37):
So uh probably not obviously not happy we won or loss,
but yeah bodies yeah physically sure, Yeah was it out
there with uh.
Speaker 5 (08:48):
Those guys just being off and took sixteen hits success
just how physical aggressive of them.
Speaker 8 (08:55):
Yeah, they're a really good team, and I think on
the second there's things that I can help to do
to try and get it out uh as quick as possible,
just so we're not in the negative. Uh on first
and second down. So uh things you know, we gotta
learn from.
Speaker 4 (09:11):
When little struggles drop back a lot, Pat, what would
you should you do that?
Speaker 8 (09:21):
You know, I think here and there there's times where
you know, I definitely need to be better and uh
creating completions. Uh, and then us you know, working together
to to find that you know, we got we gotta
create chunks, uh, explosives. That's sometimes just runners right yards
after catch or maybe that's down the field, but that's
also just doing the easy things at a high level.
(09:42):
And I think at times, you know, we're not doing
that and that starts with me. But yeah, we gotta
we gotta fin answers.
Speaker 5 (09:49):
Is it just a pointing that you guys, you know,
have some pandies and going ways that you want and you
can't keep going quins on and then kind of VNT
realizes what.
Speaker 4 (09:57):
He's able to do for you guys, right.
Speaker 3 (09:59):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (09:59):
The think it's a it's a balance, right. I think
at a certain point in the game where we're trying
to you know, you catch up in a sense and
be more aggressive. So we kind of we're a little
different in that end. But I think early on we
tried to get that going and of course take our
chances when we can.
Speaker 3 (10:16):
In the past game, Kevin said, it's a.
Speaker 7 (10:19):
Long list of things, you guys gotta be better.
Speaker 4 (10:20):
To you where does that go to start?
Speaker 8 (10:23):
I think sustaining drives, you know, I think there's a
lot of positives in certain areas, and then you know
whether it's a negative play or you know, a penalty
here and there that you know sets us back in
the series where you're gonna get in third and long
and they've been really good at that and during long,
so at that point, you know, it's a lot tougher
to sustain drives. But when we are ahead and being
(10:47):
really good on first and second, then all of a sudden,
you know, on thirds you're converting, you're building momentum and
being able to sustain drives where you're in the plus territory.
And then I think when you're in the plus territory,
you can't you can't score for you know what I mean.
You gotta go score touchdowns and not field goals. So
I think there's a lot for sure to work on,
and we're gonna have to just take it one by
(11:08):
one and all get better. But like I said, it
all starts with me as well.
Speaker 4 (11:14):
Study when you under pressure.
Speaker 8 (11:17):
Yeah, I think there's there's gotta be comfort within a pocket,
and you know, I think anytime you can operate in
that with pressure, you know, there's obviously less guys and
uh coverage, so you want to take advantage of that,
but also being able to use and uh extend plays
as well. But that I think there's a combination of
(11:39):
the two that you've got to balance, uh to where
you're not moving unnecessarily and creating your own pressure, but
then also being comfort you know, comfortable in the pocket
when there's you know, games and stunts going on.
Speaker 4 (11:53):
Atmosphere.
Speaker 8 (11:57):
I think every atmosphere is unique to it's itself. But
as a competitor, you you want to continue to make
it process oriented and uh there's a job to do
it and do it at a high level. And you
gotta play good on the road. Like we play home games,
we play away games, so either way, you gotta play
good football when you're struggling.
Speaker 7 (12:16):
As all difficulties, when you have big drops or big
MONI deal with that.
Speaker 8 (12:22):
It's all things we're all gonna learn from, you know.
I think it's hard to just say there's drops, there's
a lot of ways that I can be better to
help them right and uh times that we can you know,
work through those certain things. But within plays, it ain't
gonna be perfect.
Speaker 4 (12:38):
It never will.
Speaker 8 (12:39):
But in the moments that we're in it, it's a
lot more crucial to sustain drives and and you know,
get catches to keep going. But like I said it,
I don't want to get it misconstrued that that all
starts with me as well?
Speaker 4 (12:51):
Doesn't you talk.
Speaker 6 (12:51):
About the negative plays, the enlities is in particular, how
do you clean those up? Because it seems like the
last couple of weeks especially there's you know, you have
a play just does do zill time ability that that
trying of gains any sort of positive momentum.
Speaker 8 (13:05):
You ever any It's tough, uh I that's part of
playing the game as well. Playing penalties. I I think
limiting you know, pre snat penalties is huge, but playing
penalties are gonna happen. It happened on both sides, so
at times we benefited from it as well. But uh,
you wanna of course limit those for.
Speaker 5 (13:22):
Sure, I know, you know, for you guys, is not
any kind of histories, but do you when you look
out there, you see all your students playing in there?
You know, first second, do you feel like as a group,
as an offense that you guys are really in out
kind of grow walk together, but grow.
Speaker 4 (13:40):
Walk together the fastest, ye you know.
Speaker 8 (13:42):
I try not to look big picture and just be present.
I think other people in our building have the ability
to look at that, But for me, it's like, how
can be good? How can we be good right now
and be the best version of ourselves. We obviously know
that there are younger guys that are uh hungry and
have ex you know, are gaining experience.
Speaker 4 (14:00):
At the moment.
Speaker 8 (14:02):
But like I said, there's there's gotta be growth day
to day, week to week, and it's it's got to
translate to a better outcome.
Speaker 7 (14:09):
You talked about that settling for field goals, So how
do you be better that you be better inside the
red zone?
Speaker 3 (14:16):
And how top is it when you don't score?
Speaker 8 (14:18):
Yeah, it's it's tough. It gets tighter and coverage is tighter.
There's a lot more pressure as well. So I think
in that case, you gotta be on your p's and
q's and and being able to show eyes quicker, getting
the ball out. But also, like I keep going back
to creating completions and when you do that, you don't
go broke taking a profit and you continue to move forward.
(14:39):
That you know, three yard gain and you know the
plus ten is is huge, you know, or even a
four yard gain. So just being able to help yourself there,
but don't yeah, don't wanna we want to score touchdowns in.
Speaker 6 (14:53):
The right now?
Speaker 4 (14:56):
What is the mindset?
Speaker 8 (14:57):
Where do you go from here?
Speaker 5 (14:58):
How do you fi?
Speaker 9 (15:00):
What can you guys do?
Speaker 3 (15:01):
Well?
Speaker 8 (15:02):
The good part is there's a lot to to learn
from and grow from. So uh, I think we'll have
a lot of you know, things to look at and
address so that that's you know, positive, But like I
said it, it has to go back to action and
getting work done so that there is a different outcome.
Cause nobody in the building likes is feeling and we
(15:24):
we definitely don't wanna keep that roll.
Speaker 1 (15:26):
So finally, defensive end Miles Garrett.
Speaker 3 (15:28):
It's tough. Uh, that's all.
Speaker 5 (15:29):
Like I said, when els, when you look out there, Uh,
if you guys are a team in transition, obviously there's
so many young guys out there, how hard is I mean,
everybody thought so, But how hard is it to come
even if you're played into battering russ your football team
or whatever.
Speaker 9 (15:46):
Really, so many young guys, I mean, no team's gonna
care that we have young guys. Guys around the league,
younger old are expected to make plays. And we had
young guys step up and knew that. But there's there's
no no, there's no no expectation of like you when
you come in. You know, there's you know, there's le
(16:08):
less expected of you or more expected of you. The
job is to win, no matter how wold you are.
Speaker 4 (16:14):
Moms, how do you say always you win as a team.
Speaker 5 (16:17):
But this seems like every game the script is kind
of the same word offense.
Speaker 4 (16:22):
Really it's going around the time more it a little
more more your than to getting both up. Kind of
what was your mind?
Speaker 3 (16:30):
Yan?
Speaker 9 (16:30):
That's frustrating It it's frustrating to lose the same way
every time. It's frustrating.
Speaker 4 (16:34):
It's hell.
Speaker 1 (16:37):
A one was like, well is how do you what
hold do you play in just kind of keeping your
lot fons off the team more than what the last year?
Speaker 4 (16:45):
What would be used for that.
Speaker 9 (16:48):
Got a con team to the same person every day
coming in work off, showing guys, you know what it's like,
what's what's expected of you to be a professional and
uh a manic character? Come in and just be who
you are. Don't let the environment in the situation to
find who you are.
Speaker 4 (17:04):
Is it a tough situation for everybody obviously if you're
doing or that way out there or had a movie
that the eating and can't getting up? Did they tell
you something about him and show the shows in the
ninety to day?
Speaker 9 (17:16):
I don't think anyone uh had any m misunderstandings to
who he was as uh as a player and a person,
you know he has he has a lot of heart,
He's tough as hell, and uh, you know he knew
that it was gonna be tough getting through this game,
cause they're gonna send a whole bunch of looks, a
whole bunch of blitzers and they have some so they
have some really good rushers over there. So you know,
I'm not surprised that he he got up every single time.
(17:36):
That's just many years.
Speaker 7 (17:37):
What did they do when as to neutralize you? But
you know you didn't have a second game? Was it
just Aaron getting a ball in his hand and don't
triple cheme sing or did they try anything good to they?
Speaker 9 (17:49):
Nah, discripts pretty much the same if you wanna, you know,
stop us at the D line front. Uh, you know
they gotten trunk formation. Uh they they chipped got that.
He got the ball out, you know, as quick as possible.
And now there weren't a lot of situations which even
if I was running but nagger, you know that I
coulda got there. So I think that was a situation
(18:10):
for for all of us. You know, the way he
was getting it out or spinning it out to other
other side. No, he he moved uh no behind the
line scrimmage more than he has in the last couple
of years. And you know that that wasn't buy you
know mistake.
Speaker 4 (18:22):
When you watch those their.
Speaker 7 (18:23):
Pass rushers able to get after it because they had
a two or three score lead. What goes through your head.
Speaker 4 (18:31):
Must be nice.
Speaker 5 (18:34):
And of one in five?
Speaker 4 (18:35):
What can you say to your guys? What do you
say to that bottle about the kind of do you think?
Speaker 1 (18:41):
Together?
Speaker 4 (18:41):
And moved forward for this? Put it back together?
Speaker 9 (18:46):
I would I wouldn't say any have any broken men
And just a matter of being that same person every day,
you know, don't like I said, don't let the situation
defind you. You know, k continue working, continue working on
your craft and uh, I know, stay together, you know,
further apart we go. Uh the worst outcome will be
so only grow tired there as a team. Uh no,
(19:07):
trust on you know your brother, and no, we'll find
a way out of it. Oh.
Speaker 2 (19:10):
Well, as you went through the beginning of your career
for years, so you're obviously how did you any.
Speaker 4 (19:16):
Other guys, how did you avoid living the wrong habits?
Speaker 5 (19:20):
What mass too?
Speaker 4 (19:20):
How did you learn from that?
Speaker 2 (19:21):
Still in the same.
Speaker 9 (19:24):
Uh, well, I mean wins and losses. Uh, you you
gotta learn from the los losses. Mother, you you learn
from the winds. You know the winds you're right and
high and you can't expect to you don't really you know,
take a lesson from that. But when you lose, you
have a time to you know, reflect and uh look
in the miror see see what it took to to
(19:45):
get to those wins. You know who you are and
uh know what you missed, so that the plus happening
a great vet and Joe, you know, Joe Thomas was
no pivotal and no becoming the Russian that I am.
The player that I am and help me be a
just all around good person. Know what, the discipline that
he came came with every single.
Speaker 4 (20:05):
Day, I'm gonna take two more.
Speaker 5 (20:07):
Joe Thomas and or throughout all those men loosing years
talked about just how hard it was to continue tously
fire himself up over and over and over again. Do
you find yourself getting to the death point where you
have to dig in a little dab to try to
fight it within yourself.
Speaker 1 (20:26):
To keep going as hard as every Yeah, that'll do it.
