Speaker 1 (00:05):
Welcome to another edition of the From the Podium podcast.
I'm Gabe Klea. Today was day one of Mandatory Mini
Camp at the Cross Country Mortgage Campus in Maria, and
we got to see the squad back on the field.
On this episode, you'll hear from head coach Kevin Stefanski,
quarterback Dylan Gabriel, quarterback Shadoor Sanders, and defensive end Miles
Garrett up versus head coach Kevin Stefanski, who discussed what
(00:26):
he saw from his team on day one a mandatory
mini camp.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Guys are working very hard. Pleased with what we got
done today. We'll be back inside for more meetings we'll
walk through and a bunch of NFL mandatory meetings that
we're trying to knock out in this camp, and then
back out here tomorrow, but really pleased with the work
that the guys put forth today. With that, I'll take
any questions Kevin, the.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Kind of the modified seven on seven that you got
going on there with the offensive line, and what's what's
kind of the process that you're trying to what's the
accomplience you're pregnant copege.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
I think with seven on seven you're always looking for
ways to get that as close to a team drill
without making an eleven on eleven, which you certainly can do.
It's harder to do that in the way the rules
are written in the off season program. So when you
do do seven on seven, you've seen some teams walk
out there with bags or tennis rackets or something. So
(01:20):
this is something we're trying to do, is put our
offensive line out there, let our other offensive lineman run
games and stunts so they're still working their blitz pick
up and the quarterbacks get to feel the pocket, get
to feel with what that's like.
Speaker 4 (01:30):
Are you trying to be as many reps to the
three new quarterbacks as you can before you get to
training camp.
Speaker 5 (01:36):
I'm excluding flack up because perhaps were really.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
Reduced, right, Yeah, just being trying to be intentional about everything.
Tony and certainly Joe had fewer reps today. That's obviously
on purpose, and just trying to find out get as
much of an evaluation on the guys as we can.
Look like Dylan.
Speaker 4 (01:58):
Obviously went first in your first set of eleven on
eleven's and it looks like, I don't know, it looked
very efficient, Like the licenres starting to.
Speaker 6 (02:04):
Come out for you to do interesting.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
Yeah, I'm pleased with all the young guys mary Kay
and their development. Uh, there's a lot that goes into this,
and uh, these guys work extremely hard. It's uh something
that I would say each position we're asking them to
do something that is a little bit different than what
they did in college, and certainly at the quarterback position.
There's a lot that goes into it. These guys are
all well coached when we get them, but there's uh
(02:27):
things in the NFL game just the rules are different
in some areas. So I think all these guys are
making really good progress.
Speaker 7 (02:32):
Kevin, this is the first time when least seen Deontay
Johnson out there. What are your impressions on games?
Speaker 2 (02:39):
Yeah, Deontay U you know, doing a nice job obviously,
Uh getting up to speed with terminology and those type
of things. And I think we'll just continue to work.
But uh, it's good to have matter.
Speaker 8 (02:49):
In terms of your your.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
Play action passing, how do you think the two rookies are.
Speaker 6 (02:53):
Gapping to it?
Speaker 2 (02:55):
Yeah, I would say for us Tony from a system,
we want to be able to do to get under
center and run play action being the gun and run
play action being the pistol. I mean, we don't want
to limit ourselves in any way. I think the quarterbacks
as a group are all capable of doing all of that.
I think that's that's the really fun part with this
group of quarterbacks. They can kind of do it all.
(03:17):
It's it's a I think it's an impressive group across
the board, But I don't think there's a desire to
you have to do this or you have to do
that at the I don't think anybody's done much of
it in the college game. I was at a high
school camp last night. Coach Lombardo and the Saint Edward
Eagles had their quarterback camp for young kids, and I
(03:39):
went over to see coach Lombardo U and he was
teaching under center, and he said, how many of you
guys are under center in grade school? And not very
many hands went up. So I think as we get
them out of high school, out of college, there's just,
you know, fewer reps of those going around, so not
many guys come in the league with under center.
Speaker 6 (04:00):
Miles.
Speaker 4 (04:00):
How nice to see Miles in the house and just
looks like he's obviously in great shape and has worked.
Speaker 9 (04:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
Good to have Miles in the building obviously being around
his teammates and as you can imagine, is in great shape.
And you know, it's good for us to just see
where these guys are, get some work in and and
obviously expose them to some of the different nuances to
what we're doing.
Speaker 5 (04:20):
How important you start the conversations between the quarterbacks themselves
to getting you know, not just the rookies on you know,
up up to you, but even the you know, a
guy like Joe, you know.
Speaker 9 (04:33):
On the scene.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
Yeah, I've told you guys before and this is the truth,
and it's it's true today even I thought the discussion
that occurs in the quarterback room is outstanding. It's it's fun,
it's high level discussion, it's it's it's new for the
two young guys. But to hear the experiences of Joe,
Kenny Deshaun, I think it's an impressive thing for those
young guys to absorb. And there's a lot of different
(04:56):
stories that we hear of the guys and when we
have different reps from their careers that they can talk through.
But all of that is just invaluable for a young
coryback to do anything this week we'll see. Yeah, they're
they're working hard, they're getting close. What that mean for
you young guys, Yeah, more reps, more reps for those guys,
and we've asked a lot of them that they've done
(05:18):
a great job. They work extremely hard. Coach Osa, coach
Brabo Brown or are working hard with those guys, get
them up to speak.
Speaker 6 (05:25):
Been such a Nick chob So you just come on.
Speaker 9 (05:31):
Getting his chance without Texan.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
Yeah, obviously, you know, excited for Nick.
Speaker 8 (05:35):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
I haven't talked to him yet, but reached out to him. Uh,
you know, he's a you guys know how I feel
about him. He's a huge part of our success here,
a huge part of of uh this franchise. So we
wish him luck and you know it's something that we'll
obviously stay in touch with him throughout this year's time
for Chow in the off season at some point, Yeah.
Speaker 5 (06:00):
Quarterbacks, including to Sean, how involved is he in those
meetings behind the scenes and what do the young guys
get out of his present?
Speaker 2 (06:05):
Yeah, that's the value we have and and veterans in
that room, Deshaun says, you guys know, not practicing, but
he's rehabbing, attacking his rehab and you know, being a
resource for young players, which I think is a is
a great message about being a great teammate, being available
to all your young players, young and old, being available.
Speaker 8 (06:23):
To your teammates. And what do you think he gets out.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
Of Yeah, I would hope any player that's here, whether
they're rehabbing or you know, practicing, whatever it is, I
think there's value in being around your teammates. Kevin, we
were talking about modifying.
Speaker 8 (06:38):
Seven on seven of a little bit to help the
quarterbacks to feel.
Speaker 6 (06:40):
In the pocket.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
Like I imagine that's an effort to try to help
them play on time. Is that accurate, I'd say it's
it's all the above, Nate, I'd say it's playing on time.
It's under spatial awareness. It's feeling where the guard is
going to be, a feeling where the tackles are going
to be. It's it's finding lanes to throw. When you
have a shallow cross coming from left right, you have
to find that lane in the B gap the C
(07:02):
gap as it moves across. So it's just trying to
give them a little bit more of a visual. Other
we've I've been exposed to people have done it a
thousand different ways, but this is just one way that
we feel like is valuable, and it's also valuable for
our offensive line because they can work their stunts and
games during that time.
Speaker 10 (07:17):
When it comes to a couple more that position, going
through the progressions the way you're done getting rid of
it when you do.
Speaker 11 (07:26):
How hard is that going?
Speaker 6 (07:27):
Well?
Speaker 2 (07:28):
I think that's it's the bedrock of being efficient on
offense is getting through progressions on time and accurately. Obviously
once the ball comes out, but being able to get
through a progression is not as easy as it sounds.
Speaker 6 (07:40):
Your eyes are.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
Studying the defense defenders and seeing what they're doing, and
then ultimately you're listening to your feet. To quote an
old Gary Kubiak line, I mean you have a prescribed
drop for a play, and that drop and those hitches
will take you where the ball is supposed to go. So, uh,
whenever you do seven on seven, you know, naturally that's
an advantage offensive drill because there's no pass rush. But
(08:02):
you want the quarterbacks to put themselves in the game
as much as they can and stay true to their feet,
stay true to their progression.
Speaker 5 (08:08):
Kevin Joel last week was talking about increased toughness, feeling
like there's increased toughness, emphasis on that. How much has
there been a topic of conversation, not just but the
offensive line, but across the board, you know, increasing toughness,
you know, building that up a little bit.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
I think the easy part is to talk about it.
That's the easy part you can do. I think the
hard part is making sure that we have you know, players,
coaches are are We're putting them through a program that
is calousing up our bodies, our minds. So the work
is hard, but the easy part would be to talk
about it.
Speaker 1 (08:43):
Quarterback Dylan Gabriel discussed his preparation headed into his first
NFL season.
Speaker 11 (08:48):
When you take those reps with the first team offense
against the first team def it's how valuable is that
in Does your mindset change it all out?
Speaker 6 (08:55):
Yeah?
Speaker 12 (08:55):
I think you know, you'd like to say that you
don't change the circumstances, and you know, I try to
approach every single day like that, and uh, control what
you can, and that's just being you know, ultimately your
best in that moment, and the best competitors I've been
around have been the best of being present.
Speaker 9 (09:13):
Then you talk the et.
Speaker 5 (09:14):
Community came about you know, your process of of picking
up a new playbook, you know is es basically just
have to go through it. How do you feel like
you've gotten through it so far? It's only been a
month or so, But how do you feel that that
process is contro.
Speaker 6 (09:26):
For Yeah, I'd say two words.
Speaker 12 (09:29):
Just continuous improvement, you know, and in this profession, you know,
I had to think there's a bunch of progression and regression,
but just your ability to to manage that as fast
as possible. I I think that, you know, allows you
to create improvement at a a faster pace. So I
just been approaching it like that and you know, eager
to learn every single day. Just approach you know this
(09:50):
like a you know student in.
Speaker 4 (09:52):
Your college career with three different teams that you do
might want not play.
Speaker 6 (09:56):
Action from under center. Yeah, of course, you know.
Speaker 12 (09:59):
I think you know, at one point, I I was
the the play action you know king. I guess we
we did a lot of play action, you know, early on,
but uh, you see f But you know, I think
you know, that's just part of it. You'd you'd love
to use play action to your advantage. But anyway, in
any sense you you gotta be president in that moment
(10:21):
for that key play and and adjust, but definitely have
have done play action which you.
Speaker 4 (10:28):
Look across the I'm sorry, what's it like for you
to look across and see Miles Garrett over there and
and know that you've got to operate with someone like that?
Speaker 12 (10:38):
Well, yeah, I think in one play, you know, you
definitely see that, you know, in one of the team periods.
But you know, very happy he's on our team. But
also you know, just as competitor. Uh, that's what you
look forward to, you know, playing against the best and
you know him being able to to be out here today,
you know, and let's compete.
Speaker 6 (10:54):
That's that's huge. And getting everyone back together. Yeah, Chems Trades.
Speaker 2 (10:59):
Was talking about line during seven on seven to try
to help the quarterbacks feel a pocket.
Speaker 10 (11:05):
Have you ever done a seven on seven.
Speaker 6 (11:07):
Like that before you came here?
Speaker 2 (11:09):
And then it's so like, do you feel there's a benefit?
Speaker 12 (11:12):
Yeah, I think you know, everyone's had their their way
of doing it. You know, I've had tennis rackets in
front of guys walking forward. I've had shoulder pad shields
nine on nine. Uh I I've done kind of the
the mixture of it. All, but you know, all to
to find a solution to you know, one problem. So uh,
I have done it. But you know level that we're
doing here at different for you, uh in.
Speaker 13 (11:34):
The NFL, but you have a good time for you
where it feels like you're creating a connection with the receiver.
Speaker 14 (11:41):
In your years of college and have you started to.
Speaker 12 (11:42):
Feel that, Yeah, I think it's just reps, you know,
and you try to maximize your reps with guys, but uh,
you know, anytime you can get extra reps as well,
you know, that's huge. But trying to balance that out
with with timing it is is key and something you
need to do. But uh, I think you know, just
from day one to this point, there's continuous improvement for sure.
Speaker 14 (12:03):
So when you've had a few weeks out there now
with Joe and Kenny also out there, what what have
you been how's it been like working with them, I guess?
Speaker 6 (12:10):
And how have you picked their brains? Yeah?
Speaker 12 (12:12):
I think just a diverse room, you know, diversity and
experience and and you know, you just appreciate those guys
because I think what we've done as a room really
well is the inability to dwell on the past, you know,
We're just extremely present, And you know, I was just curious,
does anyone know how much you know minutes? Like Joe
has played in the playoffs, Like the guy's played six
(12:35):
hundred and six nows. Like this guy knows the game
and has done at a high level. So I think
there's a lot of juice in the squeeze. But you
got to ask the right questions, and uh, that's what
I try to approach every single day. But same with Kenny.
Speaker 7 (12:48):
Did you research that on your own and he came
up with that he had six hundred and six steps,
or that one of the coaches or what.
Speaker 12 (12:55):
Well, I'm not gonna walk into a situation not know
what I'm walking into, So you know, I like to
to know a little about my teammates. And I think
just in general, Uh, if you approach the game as
a student, you learn every single day and you improve
every single day.
Speaker 6 (13:08):
So that's just how I've been.
Speaker 5 (13:11):
Reality.
Speaker 12 (13:13):
You know, I think there's there's a balance to everything.
You know, you could ask me the same thing. Do
I get much out of film? Do I get much
out of Walkers? I think for any player, you gotta
find what works for you. And for me, I've loved
the balance of a lot of things. You know, walkers
are key for muscle memory and being able to visualize.
I think film helps you get clear pictures defensively, but
(13:35):
also you know, see different looks in a certain concept.
And and I think virtuality, virtual reality kind of you know,
goes in that boat as well. So I would say, uh,
I've used it before. I've used it, you know, as
as much as I can. But also film, walkers and
just talking ball. So it's it's kind of a mix
(13:56):
of everything.
Speaker 9 (13:58):
Rookie Minnie campa Otis and now your versity made a
previdy gip.
Speaker 6 (14:01):
What was the biggest challenge for you in all three
steps as behind her?
Speaker 12 (14:04):
Yeah, I think just being able to adapt as quick
as possible, you know. I think that's a a challenge
for anyone. There's there's a time within that that you
have to work through. But I think just I I
go back to being president, you know, and and not
being able to you know, dwell on a ah a
regression or get too high with a progression, you know,
and being just even killed throughout that. So I've been
(14:27):
trying to just stay balanced in that way. But every
single day there's something to get better at. So just
approaching it that way for sure, you talking.
Speaker 14 (14:37):
About there's always something to get better at when you're
uh going through the the seven on seven and eleven
on seven, uh other.
Speaker 1 (14:45):
At this stage, how do you measure success? Y?
Speaker 12 (14:49):
You love to stay process driven? You know, I think
for a lot of people, you know, it's it's a
results based business.
Speaker 6 (14:56):
So let's not get that wrong.
Speaker 12 (14:58):
But you have to have a process behind it to
be able to create consistent results. And you know, I
think whether it's a microwave mentality or you know, that
Amazon lifestyle of wanting it right away, sometimes it's just
not the case. So being able to have a process,
stick to it, continue to listen to your coaches, you know,
(15:18):
and try to get better that way, That's what I
want to do on to build a solid foundation so
that you know you're you're banking on the process and
then allowing that to have you know, consistent results del
any version of the importance of asking good questions to
be able to fully get the most out of Kenny
and Joe's experience.
Speaker 7 (15:36):
What are some of the questions you've asked and what
are their answers to those situations?
Speaker 12 (15:39):
Yeah, I think for the most part, it's it's more
so their experiences, whether it's a certain concept or you know,
what they've done in the past, just day to day
and a daily routine. But it's also just shooting, you know,
and just being the guys, because I think that's when
you're able to just connect the most, you know, in
an authentic way. And for me, I just asked myself like,
(16:02):
have I been my most authentic self today? And and
that's through just asking real questions that they got real
answers to. Can you give us an example of just
one of those conversations that we could mean the picture? Yeah,
I would just say, you know, when we talked through
a certain concept.
Speaker 6 (16:16):
Couldn't give you the name.
Speaker 12 (16:17):
But you know, if if you think conceptually about a play,
it it could truly the intent to play could change
just based on how you think of it. And uh,
we we had to play this this you know, off
season of you know, maybe if it's manner zone, you
play it this way, you see it this way, but
a footwork, you know, uh, your eyes starting somewhere could
(16:39):
change the whole play. So appreciate you know, Joe and
Kenny for their perspective on that it looks.
Speaker 4 (16:43):
Like they are heaping a lot on your plate not
only to get you ready to play, but also to
kind of figure out what works or what might not
work as they're putting this whole new scheme together.
Speaker 6 (16:54):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (16:54):
So I'm just wondering, Uh, you know, how do you
find that to be where you are kind of have
to having to take uh some of the heat or
the brunt of figuring out this offense at while you're
at learning it.
Speaker 12 (17:08):
Yeah, I that's the challenge, right, But as a competitor,
you you walk into that challenge and uh face it
head on. Uh that's what you appreciate about the game too.
And you know, I think everyone in this game sees
themselves as starters and that belief of self is why
a lot of guys are in the NFL. So you
just continue to improve, continue to challenge yourself and not.
Speaker 6 (17:31):
A lot of people love it. But failure creates growth.
Speaker 12 (17:34):
Yet we live in a you know, production based business,
so it it's hard for people to to understand that
balance you like amate.
Speaker 6 (17:44):
See that again?
Speaker 2 (17:45):
Have you ever had a teammates as a Warren Drone?
Speaker 12 (17:47):
I have Paul rublt six eleven tackle so uh, Yeah,
I've I've seen I've luckily been able to play the
three first round tackles, seen six eleven Germany tackles. So uh,
you know, Dulan's just adding to the the repertoire of
of diversity. So I'm I'm appreciative.
Speaker 6 (18:05):
Of that guy, the sixth eleven guy. What did he wait? Gosh,
I couldn't tell you.
Speaker 12 (18:10):
I wasn't with him when he he hop on the scale,
But I hope a a good way.
Speaker 6 (18:14):
You know.
Speaker 11 (18:15):
How do you balance trying to stay process driven with
thinking about winning the starting job, you know, maybe evaluating
yourself versus the able three guys?
Speaker 12 (18:24):
Yeah, I think for many people that's tough, you know,
And and I'll go back to like failure creates growth.
But we are in a production based business, so it's
hard for people to balance that. And for me, you know,
I just continue to stick to the process, you know,
and and try to create completions, try to be understanding
of the situation. But also, you know, I I have
(18:45):
belief in in myself, you know, and and everyone at this.
Speaker 6 (18:49):
Level does as well, that's why they're here.
Speaker 12 (18:51):
But for the most part, you know, how can you
create value right away today?
Speaker 6 (18:56):
And be the best.
Speaker 12 (18:57):
And I keep going back to it, but the best
competitors are the best the same present. So my ability
to be right where my feet are, be with you,
and you know, be as honest as I can.
Speaker 6 (19:07):
That's all I can do. How do that fall to
the Bradfield? Felt good?
Speaker 12 (19:12):
You know, I think Jamari is just you know, a
talented and individual, but just how smart he is and
understanding maybe a man beating play, but uh to be
able to create leverage and win in zone coverage. It
allows it, you know, to be a lot easier on
my end and then him making a you know, outstanding catch.
(19:34):
So he's he's great in the time I've been around
him and look forward to continuing that.
Speaker 6 (19:39):
Kenny and Joe.
Speaker 2 (19:40):
How involved is is DeShawn behind the scenes.
Speaker 11 (19:42):
And it would be picked up from him.
Speaker 6 (19:44):
Great question.
Speaker 12 (19:45):
You know, He's been a guy I've connected with as well,
you know, and he's actually a guy sit by and
you know our online meetings, even in our you know,
offensive unit meetings. So just being able to be around
him and you know, nudge him and ask a question,
h you know, whether it's for confirmation or or his thought.
But also when we're talking through concepts. I think it's
super cool that we do have five guys in the
(20:07):
room that kind of can speak to their own experience.
And even Deshaun this morning, you know, talking through a
concept and kind of how he sees it in in
the red area. And you know, I even go back,
that's it can change the play, you know in a
big way, just how you think of it. So you know,
appreciate him a bunch too, just sharing all his knowledge.
Then what what is you mention the the for his
(20:28):
Amazon lifestyle Like, Yeah, Amazon lifestyle is like and I
don't mean Amazon in the jungle, I mean Amazon like
Amazon Prime. You know, you get on your phone and
you order it's there to you right away. Well, I
and I'm not saying we should wait seven days, right,
but I'm just saying sometimes there's there's some work, you
know within that or a microwave just eating your food
(20:50):
up in thirty seconds rather than cutting it up, seeing
the process of it. You know, I think, uh, throughout
that journey, it's it's a lot more warrible and you
learn more through that.
Speaker 9 (20:59):
When you're now it's the last one.
Speaker 11 (21:01):
When you're not taking reps and you're watching what are
you looking for the most and what are you focusing?
Speaker 12 (21:06):
Yeah, I think you want to take as much mental
reps as you can and you want to work through
the footwork and try to play through the progression yourself.
But within that too, within a practice, you know, whether
it's conversations with you know, coach Musgrave or you know
any quarterback back there and see it, Hey, how'd you
see this? I think there's a there's a balance of
you know, discussion, but also a mental rep so I
(21:27):
try to manage it that way.
Speaker 1 (21:29):
Quarterback Shador Sanders discussed how he's getting settled in as
a pro.
Speaker 5 (21:32):
How have you felt that you've played so far or anything?
Speaker 13 (21:37):
I know every day's room for improvement and in a
lot of different areas in my game, So I never
feel I'll say full, I'll say I'm always hungry.
Speaker 6 (21:47):
Uh.
Speaker 13 (21:48):
And it's a lot of aspects in football that you
could you could get better at its weight room, it's
knowing the play as it's physically, it's throwing different you
can always get precise on more things. So I feel,
uh like I put in my day's work, but I
know I'm far from where I wanna be.
Speaker 9 (22:05):
What have you talked about it?
Speaker 7 (22:07):
But when you first walked in the door right before
Brookie mini camp there to where you are now?
Speaker 6 (22:12):
Where do you think you have grown the most?
Speaker 13 (22:16):
I say, spiritually. Uh, That's why I say I've grown
the most. Uh after drift, you know, getting getting closer
to God and and definitely talking to him consistently, having
a real relationship, uh with him.
Speaker 9 (22:29):
That's why I say I've grown the most.
Speaker 5 (22:31):
At shoulder, just the conversations with Joe, with Killy even Yeah,
just how valuable are those for you? And how much
do you just y you were able to just learn
from from just you know, talking through things, whether it's
a YEA or or I I any any part of it.
Speaker 9 (22:46):
You know, this job, Uh, it's real.
Speaker 13 (22:48):
It's real fun having those guys in the room though,
cause we all or quarterbacks, we all feel, you know,
similar ways, but nobody you know, always talks about it.
So Jones the old guy in the room. So I
joke with Joe all the time. Uh, every day I
see him, and Uh, Kenny he had his experiences throughout
his career overall, so then we just share a lot
(23:11):
of the same uh things. And Dylan, of course we're
the same age group, you know, those guys are older,
so so Ma and then we the same age group.
So we just talked about experiences, you know, just in
colls and everything so far.
Speaker 14 (23:25):
So what kind of jokes do you crack with?
Speaker 6 (23:27):
Jokes?
Speaker 9 (23:27):
Hee was like, you've gotta smell a couple of times
out there during practice.
Speaker 13 (23:30):
Yeah, I mean, I can't. I can't tell them all
my jokes. Now, I can't tell you all my jokes.
But like whenever, whenever you see him, where they miked
up or anything like that, all that stuff is real.
Speaker 9 (23:40):
That's real questions.
Speaker 13 (23:41):
But I don't know cause it being spur in a moment,
you know, and then like after that, then okay, it's
time to lock back in. Like our minds always consistently
and constantly moving. So I honestly don't even remember what
we talked about on the field, honestly.
Speaker 6 (23:55):
And on that note of walking in, it seems like
great as y'all were going over to the sideline for
film review joke giving you some pretty detailed advice on something.
Speaker 10 (24:02):
What was he walking you through?
Speaker 13 (24:03):
Do you remember, uh, just how to get through the reads?
Uh quicker and I and those type of things. And
I asked him, well, hey, alright, let me know what
what you think, like what I need to do.
Speaker 9 (24:14):
So it's like he's seen it.
Speaker 13 (24:15):
He he played it, and like that's he he's a.
Speaker 9 (24:18):
Pro, you know.
Speaker 13 (24:19):
So it's like I I'll be dumb, I'll be a fool,
and I get insight for somebody to had success.
Speaker 9 (24:24):
Over all the years that he had coached, he said.
Speaker 5 (24:27):
That not many college quarterbacks run play action from under center?
Speaker 6 (24:31):
Anymore? Has that been?
Speaker 9 (24:34):
What kind of challenge hits that been? Cause it's well,
it was good that I grown up.
Speaker 13 (24:40):
I've grown up, uh l, Little League and all that
stuff under center, so it it bring me back to
lily days. So I got a good foundation and now
I definitely I definitely am gonna improve on that. But
I have a good solid foundation and uh just prep
for Pro Day and all that different type of stuff.
Real make me more comfortable with everything. Everything in life
(25:03):
and any aspect is gonna be a challenge. So it's
just are you gonna be the one over come to challenge?
Are you gonna let the challenge get you? So that's
how I attack it. And I just want to always look,
uh the most professionals possible.
Speaker 3 (25:15):
This is one of, if not the first time that
you can up in the back of the line for
for repless, How are you managing that that part.
Speaker 6 (25:22):
Of the challenge.
Speaker 9 (25:22):
I'm managing it real will.
Speaker 6 (25:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (25:25):
Overall, it's it's a mentality. It's mental.
Speaker 13 (25:28):
It's a lot of uh people in certain situations in
their own life, you know that's that may not be
at the forefront, that may be had that at one
point in time, but you gotta know it's gonna be
bright days eventually whenever the time comes. So you just
always got to be prepared and you gotta mentally take
it as.
Speaker 9 (25:46):
Just the experience.
Speaker 13 (25:47):
You know, for anything in life, you gotta go through
different things so you can understand the message that you know.
Speaker 6 (25:54):
God's trying to give you.
Speaker 13 (25:55):
So that's why everything I'm way more grateful for just
to come out here, to be able to throw the
ball around and just be able to get on the field.
Speaker 9 (26:04):
Like everything off the field, it is what it is.
Speaker 13 (26:07):
But everybody know when when it's time to get on
their grass, then you know, you know who I am.
Speaker 10 (26:14):
For this first off season work on program in your
first training companies always obviously a lot of talk about
like well can you be the starter as a fifth
round pick, like what you make the team? Like, what
is your goal when we get to you know, September
and the games.
Speaker 13 (26:28):
My my goal is to be the best teammate and
to be as possh as I can be. So in
every aspect I view things as I got time. I
got time to be able to grow and mature, you know,
and be able to understand the ins and out to
the defenses and be able to get the good insight
from the vents in the room. So I look at
it as you know, a plus like I got I
(26:49):
got time to actually be able to really have a
great understanding and whenever, you know, it's time for me
to play it and it's tough for me to play.
But I'm not looking too far in the future about
all that. I'm looking about every day and practice because
I had some missus out there today that you know,
we gotta go in there and correct it by reasoning
in and out drops a little bit faster from under center.
Speaker 9 (27:08):
So that's the main thing.
Speaker 13 (27:09):
I'm focused on the small things, and over time the
big things will happen.
Speaker 7 (27:14):
Your spiritual growth. When you first start what what made
that happen?
Speaker 6 (27:18):
Now?
Speaker 13 (27:19):
Well, I wouldn't say now it's I always know when
when God's talking to me. Like last night, if any
of y'all see I tweeted, I tweeted something because you know,
when you sleep your most vulnerable. So then that's when
I got like real bad. You know, I got, I got,
I got. God talked to me in that time. So
(27:42):
and I'm able to recognize that because before protal is
the same thing. So that's how I know I'm on track,
you know, That's how I know I'm living in my purpose.
And I understand, Uh, everything happened for a reason. So
I just got a message like that night, and I
just sleep in my flask later on last night. That's
lever my flash light on last night cause I was
too scared.
Speaker 6 (28:05):
Go back to the.
Speaker 14 (28:06):
Reps and maximizing the reps you're doing, and you talked
about a lot of the work you do inside the
building too, Just how do you how do you think
we're handling that and maximizing the the chances you're getting
out here by also doing work inside and after practice
and things like that.
Speaker 9 (28:19):
Oh well, that's no different than what that's that's normal.
Speaker 13 (28:22):
That what we grew up doing and what we've been
doing at Colorado and Jackson. So I just feel like
I'm back in my element. You know, it's grass, it's
fresh grass. You hear the birds outside. You understand what
piece is at this point in life, So you know,
I'm back in my element.
Speaker 9 (28:36):
I'm excited to be here.
Speaker 6 (28:38):
A couple more sugar.
Speaker 11 (28:39):
You more comfortable?
Speaker 6 (28:40):
Now do you like?
Speaker 9 (28:40):
Do you do you feel I look more comfortable? I
look more comfortable.
Speaker 13 (28:45):
Huh so, yeah, of course I I I feel more
comfortable here. I would say, it's just it's just a mindset,
this adjustment. You gotta go and understand the situation that
you're in and be able to approach that and get
the best out of it. So it life is just
based on how you view different things. So you could
view things as you're not getting reps in a negative way,
(29:07):
or you could view it as Okay, when it's my
time to get out there, let's be proactive and let's.
Speaker 9 (29:12):
Get warm, let's get going.
Speaker 13 (29:13):
So there's no excuses because when you get out there
and nobody cares how many reps you got. Whenever you
get in the game, nobody cares if you took a
snap before, you know, like they care about everybody cares
about production. So that's the main thing when you get
out there. You gotta be able to produce.
Speaker 2 (29:30):
Talking to Joe Flacco about going through the reads quickly
and like, how important do.
Speaker 6 (29:34):
You think that?
Speaker 13 (29:35):
Well, I talked to Shallow too. Shallow always be okay,
Shallow always be telling me about that.
Speaker 9 (29:39):
So how important do you think that?
Speaker 2 (29:41):
And just playing on time getting rid of it quickly?
Speaker 10 (29:43):
Like how important is that aspect of your game to
transition into that.
Speaker 13 (29:47):
Nfl Oh, well, I think it's extremely important. I took
a lot of saxon college, so I know how that
feels on your body, I'll say. So it's definitely going
going through the progressions and getting comfortable and on where,
knowing the ins and outs of everything, so you gonna
feel you are. I already have a different type of
confidence by myself regardless, but now when you go out
(30:09):
there you know the ins and outs and everything, then
it's a whole different type of confidence.
Speaker 9 (30:13):
You know you go out there with.
Speaker 13 (30:15):
So I'm definitely getting to that point, I would say.
And by the time I'll say training camp come, then
you know I'll be there.
Speaker 4 (30:25):
You work with anybody in the break between now and
training camp, in particular, anybody different that you have worked
out with people before, whether it be a quarterback trainer
and or you have done that, But will you also
maybe get together with any of these quarterbacks or any.
Speaker 6 (30:40):
Of these receivers.
Speaker 13 (30:41):
But yeah, I right now, I gotta focus on this walkthrough.
That's about it be later on and I gotta practice tomorrow,
So I can't mentally. I gotta focus on one thing
at time. I can't think about what I'm gonna do
for the break where I'm gonna be at, you know,
So I gotta be with my feet where my feet is.
So I'm here right now, and I just gotta focus
on coming out tomorrow having a strong day and uh
(31:01):
and walkthroughs, understanding the ins and out?
Speaker 9 (31:04):
Seris, did joy you mentioned.
Speaker 14 (31:05):
God talking to you?
Speaker 6 (31:05):
What does that look like or feel like to you?
Or where were you?
Speaker 3 (31:08):
Like?
Speaker 6 (31:08):
Take me take us through what that.
Speaker 13 (31:09):
Was like when last night you said I was in
my hotel room. Yeah, I was in my hotel room.
I just I was just talking a couple passes yesterday,
you know, just about my purpose, just about everything here and.
Speaker 9 (31:24):
It it's a lot of going on.
Speaker 13 (31:26):
It's a lot going on, I'll say in my mind
an and I understand, you know what piece is.
Speaker 9 (31:32):
So that's why I break. I know I'm going home
one time.
Speaker 13 (31:34):
I know I'm going home, so I can just little
things in life like just feeling the wind, hearing the birds,
all that different type of stuff. It's something that you value.
Now it's some of my value. So that was the
main thing, hearing, hearing what he was saying and understanding
the message of what it is like he was telling
me yesterday.
Speaker 5 (31:54):
You gonna hear Scott and Antony, when are you talking.
Speaker 11 (31:56):
About staying prepared for those reps that you do get?
How do you think you on taking advantage of it?
When we're out here. It seems like you've had some
success throwing the ball. Do you feel like you're taking advantage.
Speaker 8 (32:05):
Of those opportunities?
Speaker 13 (32:07):
Yeah, for sure, But every time I ball hit the ground,
I feel a little bit of unsuccess.
Speaker 9 (32:11):
So so they don't. I don't really feel I don't
really feel great.
Speaker 13 (32:15):
Whenever I know it's a completion on the field and
I don't and I don't get to it. So that's
what I'm hard on myself about and that's what I
wanna make it. I always improve every day, and you
know football is always gonna be good and bad. So
you just clean up the bad stuff one one day
at a time, and after price, I work on throws
you know that I missed or things like that, and
mentally later on go through the film and everything, so
(32:39):
then you could come out tomorrow and be prepared and
learn from that woe mistake.
Speaker 5 (32:43):
Have you done any virtual reality here?
Speaker 9 (32:45):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (32:47):
Yeah, what's that one? It's cool. You take your benefits
from it?
Speaker 9 (32:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 13 (32:54):
I I can't say yes or no because I gotta
spend more time on task with it. You know, everybody
learns different. I'm more like a active learner, So I
like I like seeing. I like being able to pictures,
being able to walk through like real life type stuff.
Speaker 6 (33:08):
So I like it. I like it.
Speaker 4 (33:11):
Sure, I saw I heard of your dad mentioned on
a recent podcast that you know he's still kind of
going through his health challenge.
Speaker 13 (33:20):
Any Yeah, I don't know what's going on. So I'm
here not to talk about pops in them. I'm here
for the quarterback of the Cleveland Browns. Yeah, I just
you know, my question was.
Speaker 4 (33:30):
So, if you don't mind answering this, do you kind
of have to just like you said, be where your
feed are and that I'm sure that's something that would
be worried to you if you let yourself kind of
think about it here.
Speaker 9 (33:42):
Sorry, is that something that you're trying to just I'm focused.
Speaker 13 (33:45):
I'm focused on learning this playbook and everything I gotta
do to be the most successful quarterback I could be,
and be a best teammate I could be. Outside of that,
I don't really have no thoughts or you know, really
opinions on anything outside this game.
Speaker 1 (33:58):
Finally, All Pro defensive end Les Garrett discussed some of
the new faces in the defensive line room.
Speaker 8 (34:05):
Get exact ability feels good. I mean I've been back
here a couple of times. I mean, don't really make
my president a wear it to you all? Got you
all sorry.
Speaker 11 (34:19):
About as Last week, Jim Schwartz said he expects your
best season out of UH twenty five, and he's thought
it was because some of the stuff for the off season.
Right's the huge contract, everything that went with that. Do
you feel that pressure.
Speaker 8 (34:31):
To have your best season? The great power? Uh, with
great power comes God responsibility. So that would make him
my uncle Ben run.
Speaker 6 (34:39):
Uh.
Speaker 8 (34:40):
I mean I look forward down in my best season
for sure, and UH, I think it's trending that way,
been really good, and uh, I think everything is putting
in that direction. And I liked you know where we're
we are as a a defensive unit's really firing, really rolling,
and uh, I think it's really clicking as far as
so the uh this scheme in the especially early on,
(35:01):
that's that's big.
Speaker 3 (35:02):
Do you agree with that sentiment that you know with
what rep or comes great responsibility leaders?
Speaker 8 (35:09):
Yeah? I do. And responsibilities never changed, the power has
never changed you. So to day I stepped forth, uh,
you know here at this facility, you know, with this organization,
I've I've had a opportunity to to have a a
platform and to set a standard. And I got continue
to to be the the leader for this team and
set that standard in my house.
Speaker 7 (35:29):
When you asked them for that trade, y, you said
that you didn't think this team was was ready to win.
That's why you wanted to be traded. So how do
you as uh assess the roster as it is right now?
Speaker 8 (35:43):
How do I assess it? Well, that's what many camp
and training camps for you know, we assess it every
single day, go seeing our guys, you know, uh attack
h the practice field, how they come in and prepare,
you know, from day to day. And now if they
don't get it, you know, you make 'em get it,
you know, tr you know, like I said, being that leader,
setting that standard and uh know, showing guys how it's done.
(36:03):
They sort of expecting them to to know it. You know,
guys come from different places, come from college, and you
gotta you gotta push 'em in the right direction. You
gotta guide 'em.
Speaker 7 (36:11):
But do you think this team could be better than
you thought it would be.
Speaker 8 (36:15):
I know they'll be better. I know we will be better.
Speaker 10 (36:17):
When I was, what are your early what are your
early impressions of these young quarterbacks? Obviusly we've seen him
for the past couple of months, got got some reps
with them, uh today, just what are your impression seeing
them on the field in the building?
Speaker 8 (36:28):
Well, oh oh, look made out a divine intervention. I
mean I only really saw Dyling today, you know, as
far as getting reps in this team, and it was
composed likely running the offense pretty well. His eyes got
pretty big when I you know, got free and I
(36:50):
was face up on 'em. But you know, all of
'em look pretty no calm, no, just you know, going
through their textans, going through their calls, you know, making
them plays they need to make. I'm not doing too
much right now, and they'll They'll have time to continue
to they'll display their talents and you know, it's just
one day, one day at a time, continue to, you know,
earn the trust or you're coaches and your teammates and
(37:12):
I think you know they'll be able to open up
the game.
Speaker 4 (37:14):
So you just express the utmost confidence that you know
this team will be better than you.
Speaker 11 (37:19):
Thought it was gonna be.
Speaker 4 (37:20):
So just wondering what's kind of giving.
Speaker 8 (37:21):
You get busier at this point. We being here, I
always standing in communication with the the guys, seeing how
they're working, and continue to, Uh, there'll be a presence
even while I I'm not no physically here, but I'm
back and now it's it's time to go.
Speaker 2 (37:38):
Do you have any conversation and the guys like does
coming back after the technical seas.
Speaker 8 (37:43):
And everything that happens everything? For sure, yup. I've talk
to the guys and you know, they they understand, you know,
it's it's it's a it's a business and you know, uh,
we we love what we do and and you know
I love this team and he understand that. You know,
I was no to do what's best for me. And
you know, after talking with him and like I said,
(38:04):
you know months ago, you know, talking with A B
and and keV. You know, what's what's best for me
and what's best for this team. You know, eventually out
of line and know we we you know looking forward,
you know, to the future of this team and and
how we can, uh you know, achieve the the goals
that we want to do with how.
Speaker 11 (38:22):
They who the most out of your teammates.
Speaker 7 (38:26):
Everyone knows what you can do as an individual move
mine for you guys to get this thing.
Speaker 14 (38:31):
On tracks, it it it has to come.
Speaker 11 (38:33):
From the players.
Speaker 14 (38:34):
So what can you do to help extract the very
best out of your teammates?
Speaker 8 (38:41):
Think, the the intensity and the urgency just has to
take another level, uh t take it another level up
rather and uh now, I can't expect you know, someone
else would do it on any other side of the
ball or any other position. Room. You know, gotta be
the leader in the entire team. And uh you know
(39:02):
that's that's what's been uh laid out for me. You know,
like like you've said, you know, Jimmy said it, you know,
Kevin said it, and I'll I'll take the reins and
I'll I'll be that guy.
Speaker 9 (39:11):
What's a mess?
Speaker 3 (39:12):
Saygoing message to Nick Chubb as.
Speaker 8 (39:14):
You start to the new job this room. I love Nick,
and I think a lot of the guys go out
in this locker room and still feel the same way,
you know as I do. Uh It it crushed us
to see him get injured. You know, I'll have to
battle through and then you know it happened again, so
you know we we want the very best for him.
Uh happy to see him. Uh I'm still able to play,
(39:37):
still able to do his thing. You don't wanna see him,
you know, go back to being the player that he
was and have a smile on his face, continue to
you don't ball.
Speaker 5 (39:44):
Out and keep lobbying to get here and back.
Speaker 8 (39:47):
Yeah, I'm that was part of my uh talks with
uh Ab you know, a couple of months ago, you know,
asking you know the situation with neck and know how
that's gonna that's gonna work out, and you know how
we can get him back here cause you know, I
know he he means a lot to the fans that
he means a lot too to us as well in
the locker roo him. So you know, it's a it's
(40:09):
a emotional blows and not have him here, but you know, well,
you know, we we gotta keep on moving, keep on trucking.
You know, we we got some very talented, you know
backs in that room. You know, some some young, hungry
guys who have a hell of an example, uh to
watch and some some shoes to fill. But uh, you know,
he's he's one of the best to to ever do
it in the Brown and Orange, and we appreciate everything
(40:29):
he's done.
Speaker 11 (40:30):
You you've seen him, You've seen him work behind the
scenes like most people have. You've seen him overcome you know,
these injuries.
Speaker 2 (40:39):
But I've obviously there's gonna be questions about what he
looks like moving forward.
Speaker 11 (40:43):
What what do you think his future will look like?
Speaker 8 (40:46):
Now? I I won't put any kind of parameters, expectations
or limits on his his future and what he can
do as he's broken through all the shiblings that and
we set forth for him, you know, with the the
recovery from the injuries that he's had, how substantial they've been,
and yet he's you know, come back excelled and be
(41:06):
able to play at a high level. You know, it's
it's tough enough being you know, on the NFL roster
and to come back being to being the guy again
and and you know, telling to rock. You know, he's
he's special and I hope he continue to be there.
Speaker 6 (41:17):
Do you an for him?
Speaker 3 (41:18):
But help him, help them strength and be to see.
Speaker 8 (41:20):
Him find success somewhere else.
Speaker 6 (41:23):
Used to stuff to.
Speaker 8 (41:25):
Think that's strange, ye, wrong, wrong way to put it.
Mixed feelings maybe, no, No, mixed feelings. You know. I
I hope, oh, open with the best for him. Now
that doesn't change whether he's you know he or anywhere else. No, Well,
if if we play him, I I hope to to
punish him, but hm, you know if seeing him on TV,
you know, just playing on Sundays or or Mondays or
(41:45):
whatever it is. You know, I'm I'm gonna be happy
for him cause he's he's able to play his game
and that's a privlem.
Speaker 11 (41:50):
Oh else, they drafted Mason.
Speaker 1 (41:51):
To give you a little out up front, what are
your early.
Speaker 14 (41:54):
Impressions off him and what do you think he's gonna
be able to do for you?
Speaker 9 (42:00):
Okay?
Speaker 8 (42:00):
Uh, I think he's hungry, he's Uh, he's pretty quiet,
but you know, I I see him, see him watching
a lot, I see him learning and uh he he
just how do you think of a really inquisitive you know,
staying near to make sure that he hears every like
every detail and uh, you know, just picking up on
things you don't see him, you know, taking a thing
(42:20):
from the uh the meeting room to the playing field,
not not really asking me any questions, but just you know,
naturally you know, picking up on those cues.
Speaker 12 (42:28):
Uh so you were.
Speaker 2 (42:29):
Off on the side.
Speaker 8 (42:30):
What do you talk to him on one or one head?
Speaker 2 (42:32):
You guys are wought to do some things.
Speaker 11 (42:33):
Is one of those conversations like it?
Speaker 8 (42:35):
How much can you help him?
Speaker 7 (42:36):
Is he trys to you just so much?
Speaker 6 (42:37):
Tap call?
Speaker 8 (42:38):
Yeah, I mean he's just trying to get my uh
bit of my my cues, my mindset as far as
going against him, not that that tap of position on
that side and uh you know what made me do
what moved, what triggered this response and this reaction, and
they're trying to walk through it with him, and uh,
you know, help him, don't get rid of some tennessees
(42:58):
that he he uh he has on that side and
just you know, try to shopping him up a couple more.
Speaker 2 (43:03):
We well, we're go.
Speaker 4 (43:04):
You mentioned this a little bit, but we talked to
Jimmy has Long at the owner's meetings and and he
did say there this is a little different than what
Jim Schwartz said, but he did challenge you to step
up your leadership and and become even more of a
leader than you have him, which I think we've watched
you grow in that area over the years.
Speaker 2 (43:20):
But uh, do you have more in that.
Speaker 4 (43:22):
Space that that you feel like you can do?
Speaker 10 (43:23):
And how did you feel about you the same way?
Speaker 8 (43:26):
Nah, I don't feel anyways by him saying, you know,
that's his uh expectation, that's be his expectation from the beginning.
And uh and I think losing a leader like Nick
as well, Uh, it definitely puts more of a expectation
on to to gain more leadership in other areas. And
you know, he he pointed at me, and they'll put
(43:47):
the the the red donnoy in that's fine. You know,
I'll continue to to grow as a as a leader
in a as a player, which I expect you every
year and uh gonna do what I can, you know,
he uh, he gave me that, uh, that power, and
you know, I gotta gotta be responsible for and.
Speaker 7 (44:03):
D my holes when you just said in the interview,
you said, uh, you had a suspicion who the quarterback
would be.
Speaker 6 (44:10):
So did you know that they're.
Speaker 7 (44:11):
Gonna go get Joe Flacco, d M I had an
idea you thought it would be him.
Speaker 4 (44:16):
Yeah, And you guys had so much fun that you're
I mean, what is it like do you have Joe back?
And does that give you, regardless of what happens in
the competition, knowing that Joe is in the building, Joe
in the h Joe's in the house, does that give
you some excitement, comfort, whatever?
Speaker 6 (44:31):
How do you feel about Uh?
Speaker 8 (44:33):
He's a calm, cool presence in the in the QB room,
which I think you always need when you have young
guys in there. And I mean it doesn't hurt at
any time, even if you have a veteran you know,
just someone to give you know, some sound, insightful and
advice now to help you, you know, walk through things.
That's that's always no, uh, not a great asset. So
(44:53):
you know, to have that in the QB room, which
is the most important room in the in the building.
That's great.
Speaker 11 (44:58):
What Scott Rodgers uh coming into the AFC arts?
Speaker 8 (45:01):
What I think about it? Facing choice of years, I
think it's a good opportunity to put them in the graveyard.
Speaker 1 (45:08):
