Are you ready for a break? Yes?
Speaker 4 (00:17):
Are you ready for a break?
Speaker 3 (00:18):
Absolutely?
Speaker 4 (00:19):
Ready for a break? Yeah, and so much for that.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
It's time for the Break on Dallas Cowboys dot Com
right with Ambar Garcia, Brian brought Us, Votch Lombardi and
Derek Eagleton.
Speaker 4 (00:38):
It is Thursday August seventh, twenty twenty five, Season twenty one,
episode number twenty one. What was the latest edition of
The Break? We were live moock Start California. We're presented
by LGLG as the world's number one o at TV
brand for eleven years in counting see why at LG
dot Com Forward slash O led Evo. We got our
crew back with us today, Tommy Yarsh, Nick Harris, Amber
(00:58):
Garcia of course joining in feeling much feeling much better today,
you're not. So We're ready to go. We got a
lot we're gonna get into today. We're gonna take a
big picture look at the at this team. Uh from
a camp rap standpoint. Uh, this is the last show
that we're gonna do out here from California on Monday,
Amber will be back in studio with Brian and votch Uh.
(01:21):
And so I figured, with it being the last episode
that we do here from ox Dart, we should take
a big picture look and we should talk about some
of the stories that come out of this camp, what
our thoughts were going into camp relative to what they
are now. Uh, And we'll hit a lot of different
topics in that. In that vein. Let's start first, though,
I want to get some observations. Cowways had a joint
practice earlier this week with the Los Angeles Rams who
(01:43):
came out here to Oxtard. Let's start first by giving
me just kind of a It doesn't have to be
specific to a moment or a player. We'll do that
in a second, but just giving me a general what
were your general thoughts of what you watched the joint
practice between those two teams.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
You know, I thought overall it wasn't a great day
for the Cowboys on really on both sides of the ball.
I just think it was inconsistent. I think that, you know,
Brian Scheinheimer was talking about how, hey, we're going to
keep things pretty vanilla. We're going to use the seven
higher in these preseason practices. But you know, at the
same time, Number one, every team is for the most part,
(02:18):
being pretty vanilla. Unless you're a Sean McVay led group
and you've been around the league and people have years
worth of film on you guys, you can be a
little bit more selective and open the playbook up. But
you know, in Brian Schoenheimer's case, just being vanilla, that's fine.
But when you look at, you know, the offensive and
defensive lines and how you can get push up front there,
that's something that it doesn't matter what you're calling, right,
that's something that every single rep is going to show
(02:40):
you what you've got there. And I think that at
times the offensive and defensive lines that weren't great. You know.
I think when you face a front like Los Angeles
where they've got Jared Verse on one side, they've got
Bradon Fisk and plenty of other talented pass rushers and
defensive linemen, it's a little bit difficult, especially when you've
got Tyler Smith out for the most part and Nate Thomas,
who is the second year filling in for you at
(03:03):
left tackle. I thought Nate Thomas had an okay day
looking back on it, I think it was a little
bit better than I thought initially, but nonetheless there's still
some there's some good mixed in there, but didn't see
a lot getting established in the run game on offense.
You didn't really see great stuff in the secondary on defense.
So certainly a lot to improve upon and a lot
(03:24):
that we're going to want to have to see for
there to be, you know, improvement and feel better about
this team going into the season.
Speaker 5 (03:29):
Yeah, you said something in there I definitely agree with.
When it came to the trench play, it doesn't matter
if you're vanilla strawberry, mint chocolate chip, but you have
to be able to win your one on one matchups.
You have to be able to create some push, especially
whenever your head coach is coming in here trying to
preach physicality and you've had a physical camp and then
the Rams coming here and just overpower you physically. And
so that was probably the biggest thing that stood out
(03:51):
to me. Isn't a red flag, no, but I think
it could be labeled as a concern going into the
preseason game on Saturday, and I'm sure we'll get into
some guys that were going to be excited to see
in the preseason game, but you know, you would hope
to see some improvement in the trenches just because there
was some tough work there. You also mentioned the secondary, Tommy,
I agree with your point there. I had talked to
a couple of Rams reporters before that joint practice and
(04:12):
they were like, hey, man, who's been the guy that's
had a lot of picks out here, because Jimmy Garoppol
is gonna throw at least two or three and he didn't.
And Jimmy Garoppolo actually looked great against this Cowboys secondary,
which was which is a little disconcerning going into going
into this preseason game.
Speaker 6 (04:28):
Yeah, I still remember last year when the Cowboys faced
the Rams in that practice. It did not look great,
and then you saw how the season panned out. Now,
totally different story here. You have a completely different squad
that you're working with, and I think, yeah, you should
give a little bit of grace when you have a
new head coach and this is his first time kind
(04:49):
of facing another team. But at the same time, just
like these guys mentioned those one on ones and those
competitions there and not everything was terrible, by the way,
Like there were some good play. Is that we're played
on offense. We Joe Milton. That throw that he made
that was very impressive was his hello sixty four or so.
Speaker 5 (05:09):
I had a sixty five other sid at seventy five
seventy five.
Speaker 6 (05:14):
That was exciting. I'm like, oh, yeah, here we go.
But then he kind of hurt his thumb a little bit,
and now I wonder, I mean, if that's going to
affect him.
Speaker 3 (05:25):
This it should Yeah, he just he should be.
Speaker 6 (05:27):
Expected to go back in there.
Speaker 7 (05:29):
He should be practicing today.
Speaker 6 (05:30):
Actually, well great, So it's just a little bit disappointed
because you were hoping based on everything that you've seen
leading up to all these fights that the cows have
been getting on during practices, You're like, Okay, they they're
the physicality is there. They're willing to go in there
and then bring the energy and five and then you
(05:52):
see the turnout. What happened yesterday was kind of not
what I personally expected.
Speaker 5 (05:57):
On one thing, I will mention, were you at the
twenty two Denver joint practice out in Colorado?
Speaker 6 (06:03):
No?
Speaker 4 (06:03):
I was you?
Speaker 7 (06:04):
Were you remember that one? That one was? That one
was tough for the Cowboys.
Speaker 5 (06:07):
Broncos went five and twelve out your Cowboys went twelve
and five. So, like, is it is it something that
we should be raising the panic button and raising the
red flags and sounding the panic button. I don't think so,
but I think it is something you can take with,
you know, a little bit of grain of salt at
this point in time, especially when you look at one
on one matchups. I think something you could take away
is that, Okay, hey, if Nate Thomas has to start
a couple of games at left tackle to start the season,
(06:29):
you know we'll see I don't think that's gonna be
a good scenario because we saw him against an all
Pro caliber type of edge rusher and Jared Verse, and
he couldn't really answer to that, to that calling. So
you know, Week one he'll get Philadelphia, Week two he's
gonna get in New York. That's really strong edge rushers
on both of those squads. So you know, you hope
you have Tyler gotten back for those two games.
Speaker 4 (06:49):
Yeah, we're gonna get into some moments and some players
that stood out. I will start that though with I
thought the best moment really for the Cowboys came closer
to the end of practice. Two minutes real Yea and
Dak just drove the team right down the field and
into scoring position. And uh and that's where I kind
of wonder, like all that we've seen, speaking of what
coach was saying about, you know, the scheme and not
(07:12):
really showing much, I think two minute drill allowed them
to kind of maybe do a little bit more than
maybe they were doing before and maybe you saw a
little bit more of their rhythm and how they could
they could you know, work their rhythm in order to
move the ball down the field. I don't get so,
you know, one way or the other. I've seen also
some practices where I'm like, man, the Cowboys look really
good and then it wasn't once you got into the
(07:33):
season that wasn't.
Speaker 6 (07:33):
What so, But I think it's more of the build
up leading to this practice, like while we've been watching
through these couple of weeks of training camp that you
you just mentally hope and expect something better and then
it turns out to be that way. But again, yeah,
that doesn't mean, oh, the season it's gonna be terrible.
Speaker 4 (07:50):
And you know, it really extends even beyond for me,
it extends even beyond a joint practice. It's even in practice.
I've just seen this so many times where I'll leave
training camp and there have been years on I'm like, man,
this team looks really good, and then we get in
the season it's like, no, they weren't that guy and
yeah and there. And there are other times I'll go
into training camp and I'm like, man, I think they
got problems everywhere, and then they get in the season
(08:12):
have a.
Speaker 7 (08:12):
Great year sixteen. Yeah, So it's just that's the whole part.
Speaker 4 (08:15):
Twenty sixteen was a good example because if you remember,
Dak was having horrible practices out here, and when they
said we're gonna roll with Dak, I think everybody in
the media is like you, sure, yeah, you're positive.
Speaker 7 (08:25):
You don't want to.
Speaker 3 (08:28):
You positive, wanted to something else.
Speaker 4 (08:29):
But that's the thing, Like, I just feel like sometimes
it's very difficult to project off of what you see
out here, and it really sets the media up for
failure because you watch out here, and the guys that
look awesome out here may not be that once they
get into the regular season or once they're facing other teams.
The guys that are just kind of middling along sometimes
out here, season gets here and all of a sudden,
(08:49):
now they're playing, and so I just I think you
have to take it all the great and salt. You
have to look at it and you have to also
the way I think about it is you have to
think about each player on a progression, like are they
getting better as can up goes on? Are you seeing
things from them from a technique standpoint to show you
they're getting better?
Speaker 6 (09:04):
Like?
Speaker 4 (09:04):
Those are the things I look at more than the
end result, necessarily because I think the end result can
be deceiving a training camp.
Speaker 5 (09:10):
Yeah, and I think the twenty sixteenth Dack example is
a perfect example of, Hey, you know, training camp matters,
but I don't think you should be putting a ton
of stock into it just because when that preseason rolled
around for him, I mean, he was his completion percentage
of what over seventy percent in the preseason and looked strong,
and it made sense whenever Romo went down that you know,
Dak would be the guy to at least at me
at the time, viewing from the outside, ind all I
(09:31):
see are the preseason games.
Speaker 7 (09:32):
I'm like, Okay, yeah, that makes sense.
Speaker 5 (09:33):
And so the preseason games, I mean, it's gonna matter
a lot for some of these guys, especially if we
talk about the running back battle, right, Jaden Blue has
been the guy out here at camp. I think we
can probably all agree on that. But who's to say
Javonte Williams doesn't go out there and puts on a show.
What if Deuce Vaughan has like an eighty five yard game.
We're gonna start talking about some different things coming out
of this preseason game on Saturday.
Speaker 6 (09:50):
Well, again to y'all's twenty sixteen point, why may that
year as successful as it was?
Speaker 4 (09:58):
What did the run game?
Speaker 7 (10:00):
What made that offensive line?
Speaker 6 (10:01):
Offensive line? Offensive line? That's where it starts, though, with
the offensive line being able to have that completely solidified,
and that's gonna be huge with what they're able to
put together here with that offensive line, keep them healthy,
bring them back to being one hundred percent, and that's
gonna dictate how your whole season goes.
Speaker 5 (10:20):
And if you want to learn more about that offensive
line here in a couple of weeks plug, go ahead,
go ahead.
Speaker 6 (10:25):
That was great.
Speaker 7 (10:26):
You're so good at this, you know I try?
Speaker 6 (10:29):
Yeah, it airs next Thursday. Documentaries.
Speaker 4 (10:33):
Actually, we start our documentary series today. So we've got
a Deep Blue in its eleventh season. This will be
episode number one of the eleventh season that we have tonight,
Dirty Dozen, Uh, Kurt Daniels and a lot of other folks.
I shouldn't be throw out names consumers. I do that,
then I'm like, I forgot somebody. But our team, thank you.
(10:54):
Our teams are working on that and they're doing a
fabulous They did a fabulous job. That'll air tonight on
all of our channels. It'll be live stream, uh. And
then next week we'll have uh the Wall to UH
two point zero that that Amber.
Speaker 6 (11:06):
Worked Frederick and Tyrone Smith.
Speaker 4 (11:10):
And then we're doing our final one the week after that.
On Coach Joe, if you've never heard of Coach Joe,
I know for people in my generation, everybody knew Coach Joe.
He was one of those kind of coaches that was
never a head coach in the NFL, but certain his
name rang out like everybody knew who he was because
of the personality and all those things. Fascinating story and
a lot of interesting stuff in that one too. So
(11:31):
you want to check down Chaz Green didn't make the cut.
Chaz Green as in being Wow, you threw out he
threwout his lowlight. All right, here's what we're gonna do.
Let's let's go through it. Let's get some camp, some
some observations from practice. You can give me a player
(11:51):
and a moment from practice that stood out from the
joint practice that stood out to you.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
Start with you, Tommy, let me see player that stood out?
Speaker 6 (11:59):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (11:59):
Can I I do too? I'll do the ceed Lamb,
George Pickens Duo. I think that you know that that
looked as advertised. I think that even if Dallas doesn't
get something necessarily going in the passing game, when you've
got two guys like that that you can motion them
onto the same side of the field, you can move
them around and put them in different spots, it's gonna
be very difficult for defenses to cover, not just them,
but opening things up for guys around them like Jake
(12:21):
Ferguson or Jonathan Mango or Jalen Tolbert and things like that.
So that looked really good, and I think that's gonna
be the key to Dallas's offense this season. You think
about twenty twenty three, the Cowboys run game wasn't necessarily great,
and Dak Prescott just slings the pill around and has
an MVP caliber year, So it wouldn't shock me at
all if that's a similar offensive approach.
Speaker 4 (12:39):
Ahead, you can't throwing something real quick. On that note,
one thing that stood out to me regarding those two
guys is they would get in some red zone work
and it wasn't back to back plays, but it wasn't
far apart. Both of them caught what would have been
I think touchdown passes and they both got flags for
offensive passing appearance, And it made me wonder, like, is
that gonna be some than that These are both very
(13:01):
they're both very aggressive receivers. Is that something that's going
to be more of an emphasis for referees because what
we see out here a lot of times when the
refs come out is they're trying to emphasize the things
that they're going to emphasize as the season goes on.
It makes me wonder, with guys that are aggressive receivers,
are they going to be hit a little bit more
this year with offensive pass in affearance?
Speaker 3 (13:19):
And I think Brian Schottenheimer and mentioned to us that, hey,
we're asking these officials to throw flags a little bit
more often, maybe for some of the little stuff that
you don't often see a flag throwing for, just so
we can get these guys prepared for, Like, Hey, you
got to be real careful in this kind of scenario,
right if you're hand fighting, you can't do this and
you can't do that. So that might be the case,
and that might be just a hey, you know, when
the season comes around, this is something that depending on
(13:41):
who the official is and depending on where they're at,
they can flag you for. So, you know, I don't
hate that at this point in the year. It doesn't
concern me too much at this point in the year.
And then as far as the moment, I think there
were a couple of thrills that Dak made the CD
where just anticipation and you know, CD's at the top
of his break and then works to the sideline and
Dak just puts it right in the zone and you know,
(14:01):
seems able to go after the catchen and pick up
some extra yardage. And those are the kind of things
that you know, he didn't necessarily see as much of
at the start of the twenty twenty four season because
they didn't have time and Ox Gnard together. Now they've
got it and that's going to help you starting week one.
Speaker 5 (14:15):
Yeah, the player that stood up for me and we're
talking about a joint practice specifically Cavante Turpin, and there's
been such an increased role for him on this offense.
And I mean it was so evident, right, I mean,
he was he was multiple receptions. It was funny because
I think it was the second play of the team period.
He caught an out route. He was lined up in
the side, he caught it out, and safety Cameron Kitchens,
(14:35):
who was a draft show pet cat of mine a
couple of years ago, came downhill and blew him up
and he dropped it. And I don't think he dropped
another pass the rest of the day. He was being
fed to, whether it was Dak or Joe Milton. Multiple receptions,
he had a couple of touchdown passes, and you know,
there's been an increased emphasis to get him involved offensively.
It makes sense now that he has a six million
dollar price tag. It's like, hey, you got to find
(14:55):
some sort of value for him on the offensive side
of the ball. They've put that intentional effort, whether it
be him lined up in the slot, seen him outside
even a couple of times out of the backfield, and
you're starting to see him really maximize those opportunities and
It was really good to see him maximize those opportunities
against a different opponent because those different opponents, they're used
to his speed in the return game, they're not used
to his speed it offensively and he's a smooth route runner.
(15:18):
I think he's finally putting it together offensively. From a
schematic standpoint. I think that's always been his biggest hurdle
is like, Okay, can he get to the understanding level
of Hey, this is going to be your job on
this play, because on the next play it's going to
be your time to actually make a grab or make
a big play. And it worked out great for him
in that joint practice, I thought, and then the moment for.
Speaker 6 (15:36):
Me before you move to the moment, so we can
stay on topic, on the same topic, because that was
the same guy I had in mind as well, and
he's the guy done. It wasn't just that joint practice.
It's been all throughout camp sure, and I forgot who
I was standing next to on this highline. They post
a questions like, oh, wow, he's so little. I think
this is the first time they had seen him in person,
(15:58):
and was like, whoa, he's he looks like a little kid.
He's so small, and again it brings the question of,
like the way that you've seen him being utilized this
this training camp, how much he's been getting the ball,
what are you guys expecting him to do during the season, Like,
is he gonna be able to I can't think of
(16:19):
the word in English. My brain switched to Spanish and
hold up, hold up throughout the whole season.
Speaker 8 (16:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (16:26):
I think the interesting thing about this is I don't know,
you guys can correct me. I don't know that I've
ever seen a guy with his build in the NFL
to really be able to have a comparative, right, you
had shorter guys in the NFL. Typically those shorter guys, though,
are pretty stout right. He's not. He's a slight guy
and short, And that to me is like, I don't
(16:48):
know if I've seen a guy that they're gonna that
they will use as much as I want them to
use him, so that I can have a comp to say, Oh, no,
he can hold up, because this guy was able to
hold up.
Speaker 7 (16:58):
Yeah, that's a that's a that's a good point.
Speaker 5 (17:00):
I'm trying to think of something that kind of right
off the top of my head, because you think about
like short slot weapons. First one that comes to mind
is obviously Tyreek. But that's a stout dude. I mean, yes,
he's got some weight.
Speaker 6 (17:08):
Uh was pretty small, but not a skinny.
Speaker 4 (17:12):
Yes, that's my point. Like, that's the thing. I don't
know anybody had his bill that that you were giving
the ball, particularly giving the ball out of the backfield.
Speaker 7 (17:19):
That's crazy.
Speaker 4 (17:20):
That's a that's a that's a big ask.
Speaker 7 (17:22):
Even Darren Sprolls was.
Speaker 4 (17:24):
A big guy. I mean he's short, but he was. Yeah,
it's kind of like Maurice jell Drew like might be short,
but he was. He was a bowling ball right, And
and so I don't know if there's a good comp
I mean, Tommy, don't.
Speaker 3 (17:34):
Know if you have. The only person that I can
think of off the top of my head, just because they're
the way that they're built and the weight is so
similar is Tess Johnson, the rookie out of Oregon. Tampa
was in Tampa Bay right now.
Speaker 4 (17:46):
And did they even use him even close to as
much as the Cowboys. We want the Cowboys to use
Cavante Turpin Uh.
Speaker 3 (17:52):
Well in college, Yeah, I mean that he was he
was really good at Oregon. And you know the thing
with him going into this when we watched him at
the Senior Ball and then going on to the calm
was okay, what is what does what do his testing
numbers look like? Is at the Senior Bowl and mobile
Nick and I were there, I mean, it was like, man,
this guy's this guy's beating everybody because he's just faster
than everybody. And then he ends up running a not
so a great time and that kind of plummets his
(18:12):
draft stock. So but that's that's the kind of like
smaller guy who can who can be that gadget for you,
but not certainly not as quick as Turpin is. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (18:21):
But here's the other thing I will mention on the
Cavante Turpin topic, when we talk about this practice and
and all the things that you think were wrong and
those kinds of things. I think that's more what coach
might have been getting to when he said scheme, because
there are ways that they can back a team off.
Let's say, for example, you know the run game doesn't
look great. There's a way to get them to be like,
(18:42):
all right, we want to see a light box, and
here's how we're gonna force you to give us a
light box, we're gonna put CD, we're gonna put pickings,
and we're gonna put Kavanti Turpin out in routes. You
want to keep a heavy.
Speaker 3 (18:52):
Box, do it?
Speaker 4 (18:53):
Yeah, see how it goes right and that, and I
think that's more. The point is we have ways to
be able to manipulate a defense. We're not gonna show
those things out here necessarily, but we have ways will
manipulate a defense, and now will create opportunities for us
to be better in some areas where we looked at
it in practice and we're like, that wasn't very good.
Speaker 5 (19:09):
And if you're Shottenheimer, you just hope, pray and beg
to any anything you believe in that the run game
can just be at least average, right, just so it
could keep that second level. Honest, If you just can
just have an average run game, this passing attack is
going to be one of the best in the leaders.
Speaker 4 (19:23):
And against a light box, that's where you have opportunities.
This is not gonna be the kind of power scheme
is gonna say, give us a heavy box and we'll
still run on it. I don't know if that's necessarily
what they even want to do. I think they're like,
we got good, we got really great skill positions. We're
going to force you to go handle them, and if
you go handle them, we're gonna create opportunities for ourselves
to be good.
Speaker 3 (19:42):
In the Leaka if you see if they see a
heavy box audible and.
Speaker 4 (19:46):
Hey, yeah, pickings go just going them like everybody will go,
you know for verts. Yeah, okay, did you have some
moments and players? You always said your player.
Speaker 7 (20:00):
My mama was a Joe Milton bomb. I mean that
was that was good stuff.
Speaker 4 (20:03):
That was good stuff. As coach said, he got a
little pissed off enough of this, pissed off more during
the season. That's fine, I hear Okay, I'm cool if
he doesn't, but during the season.
Speaker 8 (20:13):
For sure.
Speaker 5 (20:14):
The content machine, Derek, I want to see it today.
Speaker 6 (20:17):
Well along that line, let me wait until the coaches
walked by before I say what I was gonna say.
L La la la la. Okay, because this is not
a good thing that I'm gonna Okay, I'm gonna talk low.
Speaker 7 (20:34):
Do you hear me?
Speaker 6 (20:35):
Good? Chris like that? Okay? Good? As m R. Because
I talked very loud, you know, my Hispanic in me.
Speaker 7 (20:40):
A m b A R.
Speaker 6 (20:44):
You you're killing it today. No, my moment was more
of a vie because I went out there and standing
on the sideline, and I'm not saying like, hey, let's
be all aggressive, let's have everybody fighting out there. But
to me, I want to at least feel tense. I
want to feel like I'm watching a practice and I'm like,
(21:05):
what's gonna happen? What is whoa? Whoa? No, it was
like so chill. Everybody was kind of like just watching,
like having a good time, and I'm all about having
a good time. But it just didn't have the intensity
that I was hoping that it did. And usually when
there is that happening, when that is happening on the field,
(21:25):
you feel it. Watching from the sideline, everybody's just like
on their toes. And we talked about it earlier about
the aggressiveness, and I think that was just something that
I was lacking from that day overall.
Speaker 4 (21:38):
Which feel were you watch Because I know on the
on the field where the Cowboys offense was playing, there
were a couple skirmish skirmishes didn't actually get to the
point of business.
Speaker 6 (21:49):
Granted I was only a practice half the time because
I was sick and the song was getting to me.
I watched half of practice. I was like, I'm out,
But the half, the first half that I was out there,
it was not it was noting.
Speaker 4 (22:04):
What I did notice when those little dust stuffs started
was everybody was quick to pull their guy back. And
I think probably a lot of what you were seeing
Amber and and maybe the results of those dust ups
not turning into anything is I think both coaches probably
told their teams, look, we're trying to work. We're not
gonna put up with all the extra stuff. If it
gets to that point, you'll get kicked out of practice,
(22:25):
because we've seen that out here, and Seat Nhammer is
very adamant, like, we're not gonna do the extra curriculum.
We're not gonna do the things that ultimately get you
kicked out. And if you do it out here, you're
gonna be kicked out like it's a game. Ye and uh,
And I think that may be what you were saying.
But but I agree with you from the standpoint. Even
with that, yeah, even that, you still have to be aggressive.
This is an aggressive sport, right, This is still aggressive sports.
(22:47):
You still got to be aggressive. And I think I
think there was some of that. I just think it
was probably not. I'll put it like this. In years past,
almost every time, almost every time there is a joint practice,
it ends up at some point it's very heated where
everybody gets and it wasn't that. This was probably the
most friendly joy practice, yes, ever I've ever seen out
(23:11):
of here, the best way.
Speaker 6 (23:12):
To put it. And because I'm using comparison years prior
of coming here a year after year, and you you
you know that when you're about to have a joint practice,
it's gonna be exciting, it's gonna be tense. And it
felt very friendly. Nothing wrong with that, but it's just
it was very.
Speaker 4 (23:28):
But it definitely was a different feel. All Right, we're
gonna take our first break when we come back. We're
gonna get into our camp.
Speaker 8 (23:33):
Rap.
Speaker 4 (23:33):
I got lots of questions with these guys. We'll probably
only getroughlf of them because everyone likes to talk.
Speaker 3 (23:37):
But that's okay.
Speaker 4 (23:38):
We'll get through a lot of them. We'll see who
we can go.

Welcome back. It is the second segment of The Break,
live from Oxen dot California. The players are starting to
trickle onto the field for their walkthrough. They got a
practice coming up this afternoon. I think I'm love forty
five Pacific time, so not really afternoon, right at afternoon.
This segment brought to you by Blockchain dot Coming right here,
We're gonna go, Here we go. We're gonna talk about
camp from a big picture perspective. Have some questions for you, guys.
(26:55):
Let's start with the biggest of the biggest of questions
coming into camp. I want each of you to tell
me what was your biggest concern for this team and
after watching all these practices, has that increased or your
level of concern increased or has it lessened? S are
you telling?
Speaker 3 (27:12):
I think my biggest concern coming in was whether or
not these guys had enough bodies at defensive tackle to
be able to hold up against the run. I would
say that my concern level is still there, but an
area that it's grown in because I really thought, like
you know, when you look at this team as a whole, okay,
where defensively are they going to struggle? And I thought
it was defensive tackle, no question about it. After these
(27:35):
last couple of practices, I think corner is starting to
grow as a bigger concern for me. You know, Yes,
the Rams had Davante, Adams and pukin Nakula and two
two at well and that's a really good group, and
you know it's vanilla, they run in two coverages, whatever
it is. It was still just like you know, and
while I was talking about intensity and there being a
lot of intensity on one side of the field, there
(27:56):
wasn't really a lot on the other side because the
Rams offense is just kind of having their way in
the passing game frankly, and you know, it's kind of
hard to get fired up or anything like that when
you just keep getting beat and they were. You know,
it wasn't any sort of thing where it's every single play,
right like the Cowboys defense one here and there. But
you know, you better hope the Trayvon Digsavone rebel get
(28:17):
healthy and can get back on the field for you quick.
Speaker 5 (28:19):
Yeah, that especially stood out to me in the red
zone period, it was like touchdown, touchdown, touchdown. I mean
there was there was no red zone efficiency defensively through
the in the past game and Jimmy Garoppolo was having
his way with that Cowboy secondary. For me, kind of
along the same lines, my biggest concern coming into camp
was just the ability to stop the run, and that
certainly factors in with the defensive tackle position, but I
(28:40):
also kind of extend that to the linebacker position in
the safeties as well. I mean, I'm talking about the
spine on the defense, and I would say that my
concern is still there probably about the same, and granted
it was it was pretty big concern for me coming in,
so it's it's still at a big concern level for me.
But you know, I'm not one hundred percent confident in
the defensive tackle group, especially after the joint practice. Parry
(29:00):
On Winfrey was about the only one that I can
look at and say had a few good reps. And
the linebackers, I have confidence in guys like Jack Sanborn
and mare Slia Foul. I just don't know if they
have enough guys who are disciplined enough in the run
game to to be able to help help in that area.
If the defensive tackles cannot. You wish you had a
(29:21):
defensive interior that can assist that second level, but I
don't think you're going to have that, and so you're
gonna be asking your second level to do quite a
bit here early in the season and stopping the run
as early as Week one against Sakuon Barkley, and I
just I don't have a lot of confidence in that.
Speaker 6 (29:34):
Yeah, I'm on the same page as both of you.
But Number one was the cornerback situation and also being
not knowing what's gonna happen with Trevon Diggs, and more
so because you knew it's gonna It was gonna take
a while for Trevon Diggs in the recovery process, but
(29:55):
it's what it's looked like. Why you see when he
on the sideline, what is he doing? Or better yet,
what is he not doing? So that has been a
growing concern that I expected him to be more into
the program and he hasn't been. And I think that's
(30:17):
gonna carry into the season. Once he's healthy and back
on the field, It's just gonna affect the whole cornerback
situation because you're already struggling there and some of these
guys have made really good plays and have stood out
career elim He's a guy that has been making place,
But that doesn't mean the problem is solved. You still
have to weigh what's gonna happen in the preseason and
(30:38):
how's that that's gonna look in the regular season. So
I'm very concerned there.
Speaker 4 (30:44):
All right, let's let's look at the rookies and I'm
gonna give you four names. I want you guys to
tell me which of these rookies not necessarily has been
the best out here, but which of these rookies has
you most intrigued for what they can become between Tyler Booker,
Donovan Azraku, Jayden Blue, and pil.
Speaker 3 (31:01):
Maffa Donovan Azaraku. That's that's an easy choice for me.
Speaker 6 (31:05):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (31:06):
I'll give Nick credit that he was on Donovan oz
Auraku way before anybody else. I mean, going back to
the Senior Bowl and even before that, I remember him
telling me like, Hey, this kid at Boston College is
a real deal. And at the Senior Bowl I would
always like look over around him and be like, it's
your guy again, isn't it. Yep? It was. And he
was showing up a lot there he was, and he's
showing up a lot here too. You know, I thought
(31:27):
it was interesting. I saw him do a lot more
bull rush in the joint practice than anything else. I
don't know if that was by design, because you know,
part of what makes him so good is he's so
active with his hands and he has great pass rush
moves that he uses to beat tackles. And he was
just straight bull rushing. I don't think that's his strength
necessarily so, but he's trying to get that speed to
power and strength to power to get into the backfield.
(31:47):
But yeah, absolutely, you know, he in this defensive end
room as deep as it is for him to be
showing up a lot in these practices, considering who's around him,
it says a lot. And I think this guy's got
a high ceiling.
Speaker 4 (31:58):
Let me ask you this question about that. You just
made that he was he was kind of just stuck
on bullrush and that's not what been what we've seen
out here, Like he has a repertoire of moves. Does
that go back to maybe, hey, let's just kind of
keep things very simple, because I do know guys. Guys
create books on each other, Like most of the veteran
NFL players, they know the guys that are going to play,
(32:18):
and they have a book on them. Here's what they
like to do, here's what they don't like, and here's
how you can potentially beat them. Do you think maybe
part of that was he was being coached to just
keep it, keep it pretty normal. He may keep it
basically maybe because that's not what we've seen, and that's
always I'm asking, right, that's not what we've seen.
Speaker 3 (32:35):
Maybe, But at the same time, you know, it's a
lot of the same things we saw him doing Boston
College and that film is out there, Yeah, and you
know there's been film posted of him from practices against
his own teammates, so it's not necessarily a secret what
he can do, right. But at the same point, I
get your point too of like, all right, if you know,
if you're an opposing tackle, you want to get as
(32:55):
much information you can and you can get on a guy,
and hey, what kind of situations does he use this
move in that movie? Man? So maybe, But at the
same time, you know, I think you just kind of
for a rookie, just just let him go.
Speaker 4 (33:06):
And it's truly more of a question. I was thinking
the same things you're like, why did he not show more? Like, well,
I wanted to see him get out here do all
the things we've been seeing him do, and it didn't
feel like it was that.
Speaker 3 (33:17):
Yeah, and it really didn't. I don't know if you've
got anymore I think.
Speaker 5 (33:20):
I think also it just could have been a teaching
opportunity or a learning opportunity for for Donovan Azzaraku and
a in a setting it's not a preseason game. You know,
he'll get that opportunity on Saturday, right, And when you
go back to his time at Boston College, Deep Arsenal
of pass rush moves deep deep deep, the bend, the athleticism,
his ability to get up and under it is there.
They know that he has that. I think it could
(33:41):
have been a learning opportunity for him to just to
be like, Okay, you have this world class speed at
this position, let's figure out how to translate that into power,
speed to power. And it could have just been an
opportunity like, hey, work on speed to power.
Speaker 4 (33:53):
That's all he wants to work on that.
Speaker 7 (33:54):
In a preseason game.
Speaker 5 (33:54):
You can open up the arsenal a little bit and
and you know, maybe you'll have an added element if
you're able to fix out, you know, some pole rush things.
Speaker 7 (34:01):
Today. I think that was probably more so the thinking.
That's just me theorizing though.
Speaker 6 (34:04):
Yeah, I got a chance to when Dak did the
car wash, I asked him, hey, who has been on defense?
A painting the butt for you? Like who has been
in pain? And he that was one of the guy
he mentioned. I have trouble saying his name. Yeah is Iraku?
Is Iraku? Him and career Elim were both someone that
(34:28):
he highlighted. So that just goes to show again, when
the starring quarterback is noticing you, you're making a name
for yourself and that means you're doing something good on
the field.
Speaker 4 (34:37):

It won't get through, but it will be the cline, just.
Speaker 4 (37:56):
Gonna have me sitting there on hold. All right, let's
let's get to some more question. Keemon Hall is currently
listed as a starting nickel. They did put out the
the unofficial depth chart. I guess going into this first
preseason game, my question for you guys is do you
think he's ready for a starting role and do you
expect that Bland will slide the slot once Diggs is
ready to return.
Speaker 7 (38:16):
I'll open with that second question.
Speaker 5 (38:18):
Yes, I think when Diggs is ready to roll, it'll
be Diggs and kyer Elam on the outside and doron
Bland at the slot, and.
Speaker 4 (38:26):
Real quick, just for clarity's purposes, what will happen when
they're in their base do you expect that's a good
question or Bland will be on the field. I guess
it would be Bland, but I don't know that I'm
asking that question.
Speaker 5 (38:37):
I would probably go with Bland just because he is
that proven reliability over the course of you know, multiple seasons,
whereas kyer Elam has just had a strong offseason. But
I think kyer Elam has done enough to you know,
earn a starting job throughout the year no matter what.
As far as injuries go. I think the wildcard would
be when Savone Revel comes back. Do they think he's
going to be ready at some point to potentially start.
That'll be a fascinating question. Or is he just now
(39:00):
he'd probably be an outside guy.
Speaker 3 (39:01):
Yeah, yeah, that building is definitely an outside guy. But no,
I'm with Nick, what's Trevon Diggs comes back? I think
you keep Elim and Diggs on the outside, push Bland inside.
As far as Keemon Hall goes, is he ready, I mean,
he's had some good days in practice, gonna have to
be Yeah, yeah, he's gonna have to learn to be
I think that you know, if we played, if they
played Philadelphia tomorrow, he's probably your starting Nickel. And that's
(39:26):
a scenario where you don't kind of like you were
talking about earlier, Derek is like you just kind of
there are some guys who have great camps and it
doesn't really translate into the season. And vice versus, so
you don't put I don't put too much stock into it.
But he's had some good days. He spit some good
stuff together out here, and the Cowboys have other options
they can put there. They've had one day Thomas play
some there. They've had his real mcquamou play some there.
(39:47):
I struggle seeing mcwualm who playing in a slot, just
because how big he is. But yeah, if if season
started tomorrow, I think on halls are starting, NIKEL.
Speaker 5 (39:54):
Can I throw one one name out there that I
think people should be keeping an eye on. And I'm
not sitting here saying he's going to be the starting
Nick one week.
Speaker 7 (40:00):
One.
Speaker 5 (40:01):
I just think you need to start factoring him into
the conversation. Is an undrafted free agent Zion Childress. He's
had a really strong camp out here, and the more
coaches you talk to, he's starting to get brought up
unprompted at this point. And it always starts with hey,
what about this kid, and they're like, oh, yeah, great,
and then it's them bringing up this kid on their own.
And Zion Childress has certainly been that. He's starting to
(40:21):
really stand out as far as the undrafted rookies go.
Speaker 6 (40:25):
I agree with everything they said with Hall. I just
hope it's not a situation similar to what happened with
Kaylene Carson into the season, where you just it kind
of gets to you mentally a little bit. I don't
think that will be the case, but that's something that
you always think about when a guy like that is
kind of thrown into the mix in that way. So
(40:45):
hopefully he continues to progress and it carries over all.
Speaker 4 (40:50):
Right, we got a final two questions here, give me
an offensive star off camp and give me a defensive
star of camp. Let's start with the offensive side.
Speaker 6 (40:59):
Well, that's see, we talked about him Urban. That's a
no brainer. He has been the most consistent guy from
beginning to this point where he continuously shows up every
single time and he's all over the field.
Speaker 5 (41:17):
I'll go a different way, just for you know, variation purposes,
ceedee lamb. I mean, he's he has had a pretty
great camp. I mean, you expect it. It's one of
the best receivers in the league. He's paid as one
of the best receivers in the league. But you know,
he talked about a couple of weeks ago about how
the presence of George Pickens has really been able to
open him up, and you can see that, and it's
it's really translated.
Speaker 3 (41:36):
Well, I'll go with his counterpart, George Pickens. I think
you can tell that he's comfortable. I think you can
tell that he's benefiting from having a quarterback as veteran
Leiden and consistent as Dak Prescott, which at times he
didn't have in Pittsburgh. And I think that this offense
is going to be all the better for it. He's
a he's a deep threat. He can go up and
get it. One of the better, if not the best,
contested ball catcher in the NFL right now. And you
(42:00):
know when you've got a quarterback like Dak Prescott who's
not a friend to take a downfield shot, and you've
got a guy like Pickens who can go up and
get it. They've shown that they can do it a
couple of times already here, and now you put the
pads on and really see those contested catches start to
come up in game settings, and you're gonna see the
same thing.
Speaker 4 (42:14):
Defensive star camp.
Speaker 5 (42:17):
I'm gonna have to go with Donovan Azarakuho. I mean,
he is he has really proven to be a versatile
pass rush weapon. And you've seen him find success against
the first team, the second team, Tyler Guidon before he
got hurt, Nate Thomas, even on the other sideline U
against Terrence Steele, Donovan Azaraku is going to be a
problem this year.
Speaker 3 (42:35):
Yeah's still mine, You're still yeah, still mine. But I'll
go Kaye or Elam. You know, going back to OTAs
was like, you know, we would all kind of look
at each other and be like another day another Kayri
Elam PBu or another Kayri Elam interception and for the
most parties done a lot of the same things here
at camp, just being around the ball, playing the ball
really well. Already has multiple interceptions here and you know
(42:58):
he has done i think more than what the Cowboys
expected when they acquired him via trade, and boy do
they need it. And you know, you would hope in
their sec that it translates to the season and he's
able to do the same thing for you on the outside.
Speaker 6 (43:11):
Yeah, Elim would be the one that has been the
more noticeable given the position, but I would say other
guys that have had moments, he hasn't been like consistently.
But for example, Solomon Thomas. Some of the plays that
he has made. You see the power that he has
and what he could potentially contribute. There's still some missus there,
(43:32):
but he has had moments as well as Mary Sleuth Fau.
I think going into his second year, right, Yeah, those
interesting time. Yeah, second year. Yes, last year he was
thrown in there, he did great in the season, and
then this year, I think that's just he's taken that
next step. You see the progression that he's had. He
(43:52):
looks a lot more comfortable on the field, knows exactly
where the ball is going. Again, not one hundred percent perfect,
but I love what I'm seeing from him.
Speaker 4 (44:01):
Yeah, I agree. I think I would have probably thrown
out Maris as well. I think he's been and it's
kind of sneaky because at linebackers sometimes hard to really see,
and certainly it's kind of like linebacker and running back,
the thing that you pay them most to do tackle
and not get tackled, you don't see out here. But
I think Maris there are a lot of things if
you watch him, a lot of things that really like
about his game right now, and he's usually around the ball,
(44:24):
and I think he's one of those playmaking type linebackers,
and so I'm interested to see as the season gets in,
number one, how they're going to deploy him, and then
number two, what he can really do with with more reps,
because I expect you will hopefully get more reps this season,
we can see how he continues to grow. All Right,
that's a wrap. Wraxtar Man. We appreciate you guys joining us.
Thank you guys for sitting in this week. It was
(44:45):
