Speaker 1 (00:02):
The following is a production of Dallas Cowboys dot Com
and the Dallas Cowboys Football Club.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Cowboys.

Speaker 1 (00:12):
This is Cowboys Storyline with Nick Eatman.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
What is up? Welcome to Cowboys Storyline. It is Wednesday,
August thirteenth, and man, I think for the first time.
I was just thinking about this for the first time
since January, the last week of the season. First time
I've gone back to back days since then. So we've
obviously spaced it out, go every other day, but because
of the way the schedule kind of falls and people

(00:43):
trying to break down it from camp and come back
from camp, got to go two days in a row,
which's this is what happens in the preseason, right We're
starting to ramp things up to where we get to
go every single day. I know that's what you guys want,
That's what I want, and that's what we're getting to
do today. So get a chance to talk to you
guys a little bit. A couple of callers already online

(01:03):
that I don't believe called yesterday, So that's that's good.
We're trying to space it out as much as possible.
But yeah, let's just let's get right to it. It'll be
and we kind of know, we know the drill, we
know what's going on. We got a game coming up
this Saturday at AT and T Stadium against the Baltimore Ravens.
I would expect to see more players in this game
than we saw before, maybe a little bit of the

(01:25):
of the starters in some positions, not all, but some.
And like always, you know, selfishly, you want to play
the backups in a little bit of the starters, and
you want the other team to play all their starters
so you can get the best evaluation, especially with a
team like Baltimore. So we'll see what happens. Let's get
started here. Let's go to Anthony in Miami's first. What's up.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
Nick the quick? What's up, my guy?

Speaker 2 (01:53):
How you doing?

Speaker 3 (01:56):
I'm doing pretty good. How you doing? You're back in
Texas and everything? Squid away, wife be kidd olds.

Speaker 4 (02:01):
Everything good.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
Everything's good. Kids at school doing their thing. Yep, college.

Speaker 5 (02:08):
I know that's what I'm talking. I know you're the
man for the job. Hey, let's shout out, shout out
Paul Man.

Speaker 3 (02:13):
Paul. You might not you might not be no cow,
you might not be no.

Speaker 5 (02:17):
Mema, but you.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
That's go. That's right. Like, hey, Paul, Hey, I'll give
him credit. I give him credit man yesterday or yesterday
he was like, oh the phone line, and that's that's
kind of tough, you know. Credit. He was giving Chris
props today. He was kind of like, I want this
phone line. Let's go, let's do it. He was a
pumped up manant.

Speaker 3 (02:37):
He had me. He got me. Hey, he got me
squid away. So we good on that. Let's look at
some things right quick lost because it's bout from to
this day. All right, Joe Milton, everybody, Joe Milton, Joe Milton.
That we know Joe Milton was a talent, but he
was a radic. We do that already. Now you take
two plays for that game. And if Joe Milton makes
that the bomb which the guys opened by five yards, mingo,

(02:58):
So you made Mingo, you took away his sta. You
can't miss that throw, Joe, not with your rocket on.
So you take you take that throw and that with
that that deep over, that deep over. Now come ond
you're supposed to have a rifle. You can't miss that
one by ten yards. But if he hits those you
know what I'm saying, we're saying, good things because the
the Bombers a touchdown, so we're saying good things about

(03:18):
them basically, So let's give him some time. You know,
I think him and will grill too confident backups. So
we just hope that stayed and has a healthy season
so we won't have to see them.

Speaker 5 (03:28):
Let it take care of that. He tacond point, Malik Davis.
Look here, man, nobody got excuses. Remember when we come
on the show, Nick, we do certain things. We say poems,
we say rhymes, we do this, we do that. You say,
somebody set the bar. He set the bar on people coming.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
Back from injury or not being signed and can't play,
and you know we got to sit out a week
to get the muscles lag. We don't want to know nothing, no, no.
If he can do it and have a performance like that,
you're gonna have to do it too. So he set
the bar that last, but not least, we gotta stop
getting down there pre season, regular season, and season out
of season.

Speaker 5 (04:02):
We can't keep getting.

Speaker 3 (04:03):
Down there and kicking thirty five yard field goals. It's
already set back eighteen. So that means you inside the
red zone. We do that with our starters. That's a
problem for us. You can't have those unities that set back.
We know we got an automatic kicker, but man, let
the man kick fifty five yard fieldals and stuff like that,
fifty two from the thirty five or something. We can't
keep getting.

Speaker 5 (04:23):
In the red zone and self destructive. That's going to
be a major problem. Can't wait till the documentary. That's
my era, You're I love it. I can't wait.

Speaker 3 (04:32):
So I looked at this call to get on.

Speaker 5 (04:34):
I'm a nice day niggas.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
All right, thanks man, appreciate it. Wait to kick us
all strong. A lot of stuff going on in here.
And you mentioned the documentary. You know, I've got a
chance to watch some of the the one coming up
this week tomorrow night tomorrow it'll you will see the
documentary of The Wall two point zero with Travis Frederick,

(04:57):
Tyron Smith, Zach Martin. Really good, it's really well done.
It did a nice job with that, and I think
you're gonna you're gonna enjoy it. You know, it's not
it's not just about three offensive linemen. I mean, it's
it's about just this bond h that they created and
how good they were together, and really really is a
good job so I know they're not done with it yet,

(05:19):
but we'll see it Thursday, Thursday night, Tomorrow night, they'll
they'll have it out there. And then of course the
one we're still working on, Joe Avazano. I'm excited about
that one as well. And put people that may not
know about him. You know, you're a little bit of
a younger generation. I think if they give it a chance,
they'll see just what what a character he was and
and to be the special teams coach, but to be

(05:39):
a lot more than that. It's been a lot of fun,
all right, Anthony. You got a lot of stuff here
at Milton. Yeah. I mean one, yeah, you can say that, well,
if you hit this and hit this, I mean he
would have had a great day. Well yeah, I mean
that's that's the way it is a lot of things
in sports, you know what I mean. If the guy
would have made ten of the three pointers that he missed,
you know, he's got a record setting day. So he's

(06:02):
got to hit him. And then that point goes to
the third point. I'll skip the Elik Davis part for
a second. The red zone. You got to remember this,
just fans have to remember this. Coaches want to see
certain things in practice. They're like, oh, this is good,
this is good. Not so good, man, I can't wait
to see what we do in the game here. So

(06:25):
you know, I'm not saying running the ball is not
a important thing, because it certainly is definitely in the
red zone. But if MafA gets a touchdown here, or
Malik Davis or whoever else runs the ball, like, that's
good to see and that's good for the offensive lineman.
But you also want to see kid Milton make this play.

(06:46):
Let's throw the ball down here a little bit. I
want to see him make this play. Sometimes. I've seen
Bill Parcells used to do this on third and nine
at the thirty two yard line going in. He'd run
a draw, get four yards. He think he could get
the first down. No, but he wanted to see his
kick or kick a forty eight yard field goal on
the road. There's things that that coaches want to see

(07:09):
that that you you're looking at it and me everyone's
looking at it, like, score, score, touchdown? Did they score?
They did score it in the red zone. Well that's
a fail. Well true, But are you are you giving
everything that you want to see? Are you showing all
of your best plays. I mean, you know you've got
some two point plays down there, you got some plays
from the three four yard line, or you just want
to run a fade and hope the guy makes the

(07:31):
catch and all that. So I get it. I get it.
You can worry about the red zone. But it's kind
of like special teams, like in the preseason. You're just
trying to kind of survive and get through some of
these things. It's still true early for panic and Milik Davis.
To me, that's an example for life. That's not just
an example for being a football player. That's saying, hey,

(07:51):
be ready, be ready for the phone to ring. That's
that's that's what we all have to do in our
in our life, you know, in different I say that
sometimes if I ever talk to students that asked me
about getting this job, I mean, I'm sorry. The Dallas
Cowboys aren't just gonna come calling. I got lucky. The
Yankees aren't just gonna say, hey, we need you to

(08:12):
do this. Just be ready for your opportunity when you are,
be ready to jump on it. Malik Davis, be in shape,
be in football ready shape without being on a football team,
and you get signed and you go in and you
do that. He's going to be on a practice squad.
If he's not on the roster, he'll be on a
practice squad, someone's practice squad because he shows he can
be ready. All right, let's go to Lester and Minnesota.

Speaker 3 (08:35):
Heynick.

Speaker 2 (08:36):
What's up? Man?

Speaker 5 (08:37):
What's up?

Speaker 2 (08:38):
How are you doing?

Speaker 6 (08:40):
Hey?

Speaker 5 (08:40):
I'm all right, man, Yeah, I got a little concern.
What about my office and my defensive line?

Speaker 2 (08:49):
Man? Yeah?

Speaker 5 (08:50):
First let's go with the defensive line. Hey, I think
we need some help there, man. And what's up with
Wilkins from the Raider? They let him go or something?
I mean, I know he hurt, but we like her players,
so I mean when he's not heard, he's like top
six defensive lineman. Is he available? I mean, we could

(09:15):
definitely use him.

Speaker 2 (09:18):
I don't know. I don't know if he's a good
fit for the for the for the locker room, I
don't think. I don't think he's been a good fit
for the places that he's been and uh, you know,
from what it looks like, Yeah, he can play, but
I think there's a lot more to it than there.
I don't think he's he's I'll be surprised if he

(09:39):
gets if he gets picked up, and I just don't
see him being a fit here for the Cowboys.

Speaker 5 (09:44):
Okay, he got a little bit of attitude problem.

Speaker 2 (09:48):
Well, do some research, Hey, do some research. See what
you find on Christian Wilkins. It's it's it's it's interesting.
I just don't see him being being on the team here.
You know, there's there's some there's some reasons why I
think he got to let goes. I mean, you're taking
a thirty six million dollars hit on the on the
cap or something like that. There's a there's multiple reasons there,

(10:10):
and so I just don't see that being a route
that they go. I could be wrong. I mean Jerry's
done some some things like that before. But uh, I'd
be surprised if he gets picked up here.

Speaker 5 (10:21):
All right, I'll do a little research there because I know,
you know, we got we had Halley and a few
other players before with some problems.

Speaker 2 (10:30):
Was his name party, the guy.

Speaker 5 (10:31):
From the Bears, little little Ronzou and the Renzou or whatever. Anyway,
I do some research. Man, my offensive line, I think
we need to play some some of the starters.

Speaker 7 (10:42):
Man.

Speaker 5 (10:43):
Yeah, I don't think any starters played.

Speaker 3 (10:46):
I might be wrong, but I.

Speaker 5 (10:47):
Didn't see any starters in there. They need that. They
need to practice too, they need the continuity, et cetera,
and so forth. Because they're one unit. You know, they
never come out when they get on in and they
don't come out. They don't whitch them out during the game.
They're just saying, as long as no one's hurt. So
you know how I am within my offense of a
defensive line. And then I know how you feel about this,

(11:10):
but I'm gonna say it anyway. I think we should
play some more starters, including that, even if it's just
one series, to get them out there. And also, man,
where's my running game? I thought it was.

Speaker 3 (11:23):
Gonna be a physical team.

Speaker 5 (11:25):
I know it's only the first game or whatever. Maybe
our coach is looking at different things. But to be physical, man,
you gotta run the ball more than what they were doing.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
Yeah, all right, all right, let'ser appreciate the call. We're
gonna keep it, keep it moving here. You know my
thoughts on on the offensive line running game. I feel like,
thanks for the call, Let's appreciate that, all right. I
gotta get that line open so we can get another

(11:58):
call in eight a eight eight, five five two two
ninety seven. That is the number to call. That's what
we're back at our regular number here and back at
our studios at the Star, almost said Valley Ranch. Not
sure why that's only been nine years the offensive line,
like this whole debate on playing the starters versus the

(12:21):
you know, the backups. I I'm with you about wanting
to see it, but I don't. The risk reward is
not there for me. It's just not think about it
like this. How long do you think it's going to
take if if a guy plays, I mean, you're asking
for a series or two. Is that really gonna change much?

(12:43):
They don't play until September the fourth, But if you
think it is cool, but how much if say the
guy Dak doesn't get that, when are they going to
be When is he going to be back to like normal? Okay,
just because they didn't, you know, because he didn't get
any work in the pre season. When do you think
that is a week? Two weeks? Do you think by

(13:05):
the second game they'll be good all the all the Okay,
that's you know, I'll give you two weeks, two weeks,
not till week three? All right? I mean certainly can't
go oh and two. But my point is is that
by not playing them in the preseason, it's it could
take a week or two, maybe even more than that.

(13:25):
But what if they do play and they get hurt.
What if it's an injury that's not a week or two.
What if this is a season long injury. We're seeing
it all around the league. Torn acl here, torn Achilles here,
you know. I mean, the Cowboys had some players with
the neck injury and out for the season. So all
I'm saying is is that the risk versus the reward
not playing the guys in the in the preseason, You're

(13:48):
you're saying maybe the first game or maybe the second game,
they're not going to be at their best. And you
can't guarantee me that playing one series here against Baltimore
is gonna make Dak ready to go like he's never
been before against Philip. I don't know if I believe that.
I just think it's not going to be more than
a week or two. And you can't guarantee me that

(14:10):
any injury that happens is only going to be a
week or two. I mean, so when you weigh that
in there, and and the lack of depth that they have.
I'm sorry, I have to I have to be at
full strength against Philadelphia and I can't risk that. So
that's that's what I would That would be my argument
there for the stars, for the star players like that. Now,

(14:31):
a guy like Tyler Booker. Booker, I think he could
play some and he's he's a starting guard. But I'm
just saying for not ever playing football before, I'm okay
with him getting out there. All right, let's go to
Anthony in New Orleans. Anthony not as.

Speaker 6 (14:48):
Noney in New Orleans. But anyway, listen the first time
call it, but a long time. My question is should
should I be worried about if Michael Parker has been
onna sign him? I think they will. But then the
second thing, how do we look as far as running back?
I'm not sold on a running back position? Can you
enlighten me on that?

Speaker 2 (15:05):
Sure? Sure? Did you say you were from New Orleans
or not from New Orleans?

Speaker 6 (15:09):
From New Orleans, Bonnie Rave, But I've been a Cowboys
fan since I was seven.

Speaker 2 (15:13):
All right, I hear it, man, that's all sixty three? Okay, Well,
all right, Anthony, appreciate that. Thank you for the call.
And I Micah Micah in the running game. There we go,
we got to here we go first time colored. There
you go, Paul. I thought I heard it first, but
I didn't. I didn't hear the first part of it.
All right, born and raised the New Orleans Cowboy fan.

(15:35):
That's not easy. I mean, of course, because that's a
passionate fan base there that you're dealing with with the Saints.
But the Micah situation, I think it's it's going to happen.
I really do. I think he's going to sign. I
think this we'll get to the point where let me
let me say, all right, Anthony's still there, Yeah, all right,

(15:57):
all right, all right, well we're gonna all in the
out here. Thank you for the call, Paul. Let's get
to let's clear the line for that, and then let
me answer this off the air. Micah. I do believe
Will Will will sign before the season starts it. If not,
I think he's going to to be there. I mean,
he's yeah, he's gonna come back and play, whether he's

(16:18):
on a contract or he's not on a contract. But
I definitely think he will. He will sign, and and
and you know they'll come to an agreement where he's
he's gonna be out there. He's not gonna be missing
game checks. So uh, and he knows he can't be
bad when he's out there, So he's gonna get himself
ready to go, get back here, ramp this thing up
so he can be at full strength and hit. If
he doesn't have that contract yet, he's going to prove

(16:40):
why he should have it. So you can't go out
there and say all this and hold out and then
go and get one tackle and no sacks against the
Eagles and they lose the game, and then your leverage
is not good there. So all right, let's go to
let's go to the running back question, and Paul, can
we can we clear the line please? I still have Anthony,

(17:03):
thank you. So the running back question, I it's still
it's it's the most debated spot, probably because nothing is
settled from top to bottom. You if Phil Maffa went
out and had one hundred and twenty two yards rushing
against the Ravens scored a touchdown, there would be some
talk that he should start. I don't think that that's

(17:24):
gonna happen, but I'm just saying we got a guy
that might be on the team. Maybe he's gonna be
in the running back rotation. Same with Javonte Williams, same
with Miles Sanders, same with Jayden Blue. Jaydon Blue is
gonna be on the team. Maybe he's the starter, maybe
he's the third down back. Maybe Javonte Williams is the starter,
Maybe he's the third down back. Maybe Miles Sanders is

(17:44):
the starter. But maybe Miles Sanders isn't on the team.
And then what about Malik Davis? Now is he can
I'm just saying nothing. It's a very intriguing position, but
nothing is settled at all, and I don't know if
it's going to be in the in the just by
based off of preseason games. I'd like to see these
guys run the ball, But if you're not going to
play your offensive line for that long, and then what
kind of test are you really showing them? So we'll see,

(18:08):
you know, not one hundred percent sure about running back
and all that to be said, there could be a
guy on another team that gets cut and released that's
a better option than all of the guys I just mentioned.
And that's a position where you can just go in
there and say, you know, run the football. Now the
pass protection is a big deal. You got to trust
them there. But if a guy could run the ball

(18:30):
and he's in football shape, he should be able to contribute.
It's not the hardest position to figure out a new
offense and stuff like that. It's really more pass protection
than anything. But it's wide open. Running back is absolutely
wide open. I think there's probably six or seven options
there and they've only got four or five on the roster.

(18:51):
I didn't even mention Deuce fond but I just I don't.
I don't see it now. Hunter Lypke's going to be
involved somehow. But for Deuce he gets these chances. He
may be more than you know, not as much as
some fans want to see, but he just doesn't do
a whole lot with it. I just have a hard
time thinking there's going to be a spot for him.
All right, let's go to our next caller. We've got Greg.

(19:12):
He's in the Outer Banks. That's North Carolina in Southeast Virginia.
It's gotta be first time caller, Greg. What's up?

Speaker 8 (19:19):
Hey man, I am a first time caller. How are
you doing?

Speaker 6 (19:22):
We go?

Speaker 4 (19:23):
So?

Speaker 2 (19:24):
Are you what state are you actually in?

Speaker 8 (19:27):
I'm in North Carolina I'm in the kill Double Hills,
North Carolina, where the right memorial is. Okay, you can
see it out my window. Yep.

Speaker 2 (19:35):
Nice. All right, So I have North Carolina and Virginia
written down here. So that's that's good. But definitely for
first time.

Speaker 8 (19:42):
For me, early an hour from Virginia. Most of the
people from Virginia come down here to vacation.

Speaker 9 (19:48):
Cool.

Speaker 2 (19:49):
All right, Well man, the first time caller, What do
you got? What's on your mind?

Speaker 8 (19:54):
Well, you know, we talk about the offensive line, and
I worries there. I think that through as the season goes,
it's gonna work its way. It's gonna fix itself due
to reps. I think our wide receiver room is pretty
much set. We just got to figure out the fourth
and fifth receiver. I think our linebacker course is set.

(20:16):
We got to work on our corner course. But what
our real real problem, and it's been for several years now,
is the one tech. And I think we need to
accept reality and say the experiment is over and let
MASI go. I think Mazzie needs to go, and I
think Douche needs to go. I mean, as much as

(20:37):
you love them, uh, it's just it's just taking up
roster spots, and we need to figure out, especially the
one tech. We need to figure out the middle of
the line because we cannot stop the run. We cannot
stop the run, and we gotta have we gotta have
some we gotta got some beef there that you know,
we can't have people paying one tech and losing weight.

(20:58):
I mean, it's just it's not it's just not gonna work.

Speaker 2 (21:02):
Yeah, because go ahead ahead.

Speaker 8 (21:05):
You look at you look at Baltimore, you know in
their offensive line. You look at Los Angeles and their
offensive line. I mean, they just overpower you. And of course,
you know you can work with that with technique, but
still when it comes right down to it, and you
go to Philadelphia and you know you got Henry running

(21:25):
right down your your face, they don't have to do
anything else. I mean, you know, they could throw the
ball a few times, but it's just just handle the
ball off and there's nothing we can do to stop it.
And we're just going to wear a defense totally out
and we don't even have backups for that.

Speaker 2 (21:44):
Yep, you're not You're not wrong about what Philadelphia could do.
And and and you know that's they are all these
receivers and tight ends, but they don't have to do
all that, and they're gonna they're going to establish the
run right off the bat, Greg, did you have anything
else before I address that?

Speaker 8 (21:59):
Or that's it?

Speaker 2 (22:01):
Okay, well man, thanks for the call. Good to hear
from you. Always good to hear from a first time caller.
So call us back for sure. Glad that you're a
part of the show.

Speaker 8 (22:09):
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (22:10):
All right, Okay, you know the the Mazie stuff. I'm
I'm kind of in between. I think where a lot
of fans are on experiments over time, to go the
experiment or having him be a starter, I think you
got to look at other options. I don't think he's

(22:31):
he's the guy there like that they wanted him to do,
like but has to go. I don't think he's counting
that much money on the on the cap where you
would you know you're saving all this. Here's the thing,
it's gonna be, it's almost impossible for him to actually
to meet expectations at this point in his career. I mean,

(22:53):
it's gonna be really, really tough because you're a first
round pick and it's already two years where you just
have done anything, and the expectations now are so low
that when he doesn't get knocked off the ball or
actually makes a play, you're like, WHOA. Everybody in the
press box like Mazzi, it's not what you what you
wanted to be. But I'll say this, like on the

(23:19):
flip side, here's a guy that that it's not like
Micah Mica has had three different coordinators in the last
three years and he just goes and rushes the passer
and does his thing and and you know, this has
been good at it. And Dearon Bland's had different you know,
uh coordinators and all that overshown some as well. But Mazzi,

(23:39):
this hasn't you know, this hasn't been a good a
good situation for a guy that not only has had
three different schemes that he's been in with with Quinn
and then Zimmer and now Eberfluss scheme, but he's playing
at different body weights, he's playing different positions. There's just
been no consistency in his situation and then therefore there's

(24:00):
been no consistency in his play. If that sounds like
an excuse, that's not the intent. What I'm saying is
is there has been a lot of things that have
changed in this defense. Some players have been able to
adapt better than others, and it hasn't been that way
for Masie. So he could stand to have a little consistency.

(24:22):
And so that being said, I don't know if I'm
ready to just cut ties, but counting on him all
the time as a starter, I don't think you can
do that. So if there's an in between, then that
that's me. I'm gonna take a break here real quick.
On Cowboys storyline, We'll be right back after this.

you might have them walked through or so on Friday,
getting ready for Saturday's game against Baltimore at AT and
T Stadium. And then after that that's when you'll see

(26:57):
next week. That's when they'll have the two night practice
says out here and just kind of getting this thing
closer and closer. Another preseason game after that at home,
and then start to cut that roster down and get
it down to fifty three and get the practice squad guys,
and it should be a lot of fun. So that's
kind of the schedule. That's where it stands here and
we'll stay tuned. I wish I could tell you the

(27:19):
the podcast schedule. I know it'll change a little bit
next week as well. All right, let's go to Rick
in Webster, Massachusetts.

Speaker 8 (27:29):
Rick.

Speaker 13 (27:29):
What's up, hey, Nick?

Speaker 14 (27:31):
How are you doing good?

Speaker 2 (27:32):
How are you?

Speaker 14 (27:33):
I'm all right? Yeah, speaking of the roster things looking
forward to at the thirty's game, hopefully we get Booker
and a few other people who didn't play playing so
you can see what they're all about.

Speaker 13 (27:47):
Yeah, but for roster.

Speaker 14 (27:49):
Thing, sincy and stuff people putting out, you know, like
projections and stuff like that, beating some of those old things.
Winfree Sky I think should make teams and Childress and
mostly and those are the two main ones. Yeah, that

(28:11):
didn't make a team. And I said this should be
on the team. Oh awesome, So it said they wouldn't
be on the team. I think he's a multi switched,
he's a multi flex player, so he should make a team.

Speaker 2 (28:24):
Well, I mean, yeah, he could play you can play
guard and play tackle. I don't know if he's proven
they can play either one. Well, I mean, and that's
not a knock on him, it's just yeah, you got
position flex. But sometimes position flex hurts those young players
because they're they're they're playing a little bit here, they're
playing here and they need to be focused all the
time here. And so I mean, here's the guy. I mean,

(28:46):
just he had trouble lining up on the line of
scrimmage two plays in a row. But he's got some
skill there, there's no doubt about it. This is his
third year. He's he's got some something to his game.
You know that are gonna keep. They're gonna keep a
couple of players like that, those backup position flex guys,
and so you know, is it gonna be Hakeema identity

(29:08):
or you know, uh Cornelius or the rookie and Austin Richards.
I mean, there's there's a lot, there's a lot to
be you know, on the table. Still and Perry and
Winfrey you mentioned him. I mean he's been pretty good.
I mean, but it's a position of need, and I
would imagine there's there might be somebody out there that
gets released that's that's more experienced and better than him.

Speaker 14 (29:29):
So yeah, that's correct.

Speaker 2 (29:31):
Yeah. Now Childress, I'm I'm thinking he has a good
shot of making this team. Zion Childress, rookie from Kentucky
safety corner, nickel guy, slot guy, special teams guy, a
lot of checking a lot of boxes off there. So
I think rookie free agent wise, I think, look watch

(29:52):
out for him.

Speaker 14 (29:54):
That's for sure.

Speaker 2 (29:56):
All get on, all right, They thanks appreciate that. Yeah,
this is that time of year where you know, you
it's sometimes it's so easy to just look at the
roster and go, Okay, who's who's making it? This guy
or this guy and this guy's been a little bit better,
but this guy could do this. This guy does you know,

(30:18):
he plays he plays the safety a little bit better.
This guy's a little bit better special teams, but he's
better at this. And then you're like, you're trying to
do the roster next thing. You know, I've been burned
by this so many times, like, oh wait, the the
Broncos just cut this guy and he's gonna he's been
here five years and he's gonna come here and he's
actually with this defensive backs coach and you know at

(30:41):
another you know spot, and he can play both the better,
and so he's going on the team. You know, you know,
you're trying to predict the roster. That's why I've done
I used to take, you know, the flip card to
start up training camp and here's my projected fifty three
and then you know, the final fifteen spots are all
mixed up, and this guy's on the team for a day,

(31:02):
but then he's on ir It's like, yeah, I've stopped
doing that because it's so tough and for things just
like this, I mean, you want to you want to
pick this guy over this guy in the offensive line,
but I mean that's why. That's why twelve scouts are
at training camp. The Cowboys have scouts for three weeks
at training camp. They're looking at that and then they

(31:22):
they go to start looking at other teams. So right now,
you see a game I'm watching on NFL Network, Tampa
Bay versus Tennessee, I'm sure the Cowboys have a scout
there and they and they're looking at a defensive tackle,
going all right, find out if that number fifty eight
for that team is better than Winfrey, or find out
if this tackle is better than Austin Richards or Cornelius

(31:42):
or you know whatever it is. So that's that's going
around all in the league. And I bet you there's
three players maybe four, but I'm gonna say three players
for sure that are on the roster against the Eagles
that are not here. I don't know what positions, but
that's kind of what I'm thinking. All right, let's go
to Armando in Mexico City.

Speaker 8 (32:04):
How are you good?

Speaker 2 (32:05):
Are you?

Speaker 8 (32:06):
Are you fine?

Speaker 7 (32:08):
Fine? I'm really happy that we have football back again. Yeah, well,
at least some games. So that's something. The only thing
that I didn't like was that, for some reason, I
got the Rams broadcast with with game Pass subscription, and
of course it was Rams all the time, so I

(32:29):
couldn't really care less about the high school story of
the Rams four stringer long snapper, you know. But anyway,
other than.

Speaker 8 (32:38):
That, pretty happy.

Speaker 2 (32:40):
So who do you are.

Speaker 7 (32:43):
Respecting to really looking forward to playing this Saturday?

Speaker 2 (32:49):
Okay, thanks, thanks for the call. I'm going to cut
that off and we're having a little feedback there. So
I didn't know if that was on the call or
or what. But I answer those questions. First off, on
your on the part about the the Rams broadcast, it's
good that you got to see it nationally. That that's

(33:09):
what happens. They they take the home team's feet. So
if you get the same NFL you know game Pass
or these these games are going to be on live
on NFL network, you're gonna get the Cowboys broadcast. You're
going to get our people on there. I can't tell
you who all is going to be on the sideline
right now or that's kind of up in the air,

(33:30):
but I know that you'll see, you know, the our
people that are there, uh doing that game and the
next one. So when you see that the the preseason games,
like I'm watching right now. This this this Buccaneers Tennessee game,
which I guess was from last weekend. You know it's
it says the Bucks Network on there. This is a
home game, so therefore that's the broadcast you're going to get.

(33:52):
So you're gonna get the Cowboys. You'll get the Cowboys
stories from the backup long snapper, which there isn't one
on the team right now, but stories like that you'll
get from the Cowboys perspective for the next couple of games.
And then as far as another question you had just
guys that I'm looking forward to seeing. You know, I

(34:12):
think that I keep harping on it, but but I
want to see the running game. I want to see
the running backs and the running games. So Tyler Booker
would like to see him out there. I think Cooper
bebe might you know, he's still a young player. He
can be out there. I don't need to see Tyler Smith,
but uh, you know, if you want to, they want
to put Hoffman in bass and those guys out there
and maybe even Terrence Steele run the ball a little

(34:34):
bit with these with these backs, because if you want
to evaluate the backs, you kind of need to evaluate
the offensive line and have have a true test there.
So one way or another, I want to see how
they run the football. I don't want to see the
first six plays which just two series and no and
no runs. Want them to run it, keep running it,
have some success and even get down in the gold line.

(34:56):
I get there's things to evaluate, you know, to see
how the receivers can catch the ball and the tight
ends making plays and the quarterbacks delivering. But I also
want to see them run it and punch it in.
So that's one thing I would like to see. All right,
let's go to our next call. Chris is in San Angelo,
So so Chris.

Speaker 13 (35:17):
Mister Nick, how are you?

Speaker 11 (35:19):
Hey?

Speaker 13 (35:20):
Good? Sorry? I just I just heard you. My bad,
You're fine, okay, Hey, good to see you back in
studio and Frisco. First of all, thank you, and then
and second I was I was just having a I
had a thought. Uh, I know you're not on the
coaching staff, but I was wondering if you think that
it would be a good idea or do you think

(35:43):
it would hurt anything? If the Cowboys may be you know,
they always talked about preseason there's vanilla calling and if
maybe just they opened it up a little bit more
for some of these players that are out there. Obviously,
you can't show too much because that's not going to

(36:03):
be out there, and hopefully CD isn't. And I'm not
talking anything crazy, like you know, the double reverse would
Turpin and CD you to throw back to taking it.
But I'm talking about just opening up the playbook a
little bit more to get these guys that are out
there a little more of a situational type situation, you

(36:25):
know what I mean.

Speaker 2 (36:26):
Yeah, I just think that's a slippery slope. That's just
that's one where that you don't need to see Turpin
run the ball. But if they gave that type of
play to to Jalen Cropper, I mean, that's still putting
it out there a little bit, you know what I mean.

(36:47):
And so opening up the playbook, it's still opening up
the playbook, regardless of who's doing it. And it is
just a fine line where, you know, do you want
to sit give give our guys the best chance to succeed,
and you also want to expose the type of things
we're trying to do. And that's the balance that Shoddy

(37:10):
and this staff and all staffs have have to deal with.
And I guarantee you there's fans that say I want
to see more, and there's coaches that are like, why
are we showing so much? And so you got to
find that that balance. You're not wrong. But at the
same time, just just putting the plays out there, even
without the different personnel, I don't I don't think uh

(37:32):
is something that you're trying to do, especially for a
for a new staff. You got to remember, we're gonna
we're gonna hear that that term a lot that we've
we've heard it the last few years. Was it unscouted looks?
You know, the Cowboys have more of that than Philly has.
Now Philly has a ring and they're gonna have a banner,
So we take that. But you kind of know what

(37:54):
they're gonna do more than the Cowboys are gonna do.
That doesn't mean the Cowboys are gonna do it better.
I'm just saying that's the only really advantage they have,
and so right now they don't need to be showing
much of anything about what they're going to be doing.

Speaker 13 (38:07):
Okay, I was I wasn't suggesting it. I was just
saying that, you know, maybe if to help with some
of the situational top football with some of these guys
that are trying to you know, make the team and
you know, or get get into position to make the team.

Speaker 2 (38:24):
So yeah, awesome, Well, I you know, again, that's that's
just my opinion. I mean, I'm everyone has a different,
different theory on how they should handle this in the
preseason and all that. As I said in the previous shows,
I said it maybe earlier today on I joined Cowboys
Break and I just kind of said that that, you know,
their success or lack of success in the first week,

(38:46):
first month of the season isn't so drastic that I
have to say they're they're too rusty. They got to
be out there. That's they've been. They've been good enough.
That got hurt in twenty twenty with his you know,
with his ankle and foot, and he was missed the
whole season, and he comes back and didn't play anything

(39:07):
in the in the preseason, and then he throws for
four hundred yards against the world champion Bucks and they
were two seconds away from winning that game. So that's
one of those things where I feel like these guys
will get themselves ready to play.

Speaker 13 (39:22):
That's perfect. Thank you for answering me Rick, all.

Speaker 2 (39:24):
Right, all right, no problem as man call man caled Worth,
especially if you're gonna rhyme it and anyways, all right.
You know, there's a lot of times where we get
callers and I'm kind of like, is that the first
time caller? Maybe? And I'll ask it and they're like, no, no,
I called before. I'm like, oh, I'm sorry. I'm pretty

(39:45):
sure that I've never typed in Spence from Alaska. Spence, Yes, sir,
what is up? Man?

Speaker 9 (39:55):
I am well, thank you?

Speaker 5 (39:56):
How are y'all doing?

Speaker 4 (39:57):
Well?

Speaker 2 (39:58):
Let's pause because it's your first time call, which means,
all right, so you're in Alaska right now?

Speaker 9 (40:07):
I am in southeast Alaska. Let's not born and raised
oh nine thirty, I reckon.

Speaker 2 (40:14):
Ish okay ninety four yep, But.

Speaker 9 (40:19):
So yeah, A long time Cowboys fan, born and raised
in Nabline.

Speaker 4 (40:24):
Been watching.

Speaker 9 (40:24):
I haven't missed a game in thirty years, even though
I've lived all over the country via you know, satellite
radio or going to the sports bar or whatever it
may be to be able to see them. But but
I'm a huge fan of really paying attention in camp,
and I want to know the depth of the team,
you know, and and this year, like there's so many

(40:48):
obvious concerns, but I'm feeling like weirdly optimistic. But I
believe that the deepest question. I know, the cornerback room
is in dire straits right now, temporarily hopefully, Yeah, but
it's Jordan Lewis. I mean, how do you replace that guy?

(41:09):
He was the spiritual leader of the defense. I remember
when he got drafted, if he was even drafted, yeah, yeah,
but there was that first round pick who'd never really
panned out. He made his Pro Bowl the first year
and then he just the guy's not even in the
league anymore. But Lewis, you know, out competed him for

(41:33):
that position. I mean, he just like flat out won
it and since then has been a dog. And I
just don't know. I know the cornerback room is in
bad straits, but specifically, if we were healthy, who covers
in the slot?

Speaker 2 (41:52):
Yeah, that's that's a great question. That's what they're trying
to figure out. They're trying to figure out if he
you know, if he's going to be the guy. You know,
if it's going to be you know, one of these
young guys. Is it going to be Childress or Mukuamu
or a Keemon Hall. Is it going to be Bland
to slide inside and you've got someone that could play
on the outside. A lot of questions that they're they're

(42:13):
figuring out because that Bland thing is always that's a
good plan. But then who's on the outside, you know,
I mean it's not like Haylen Carson's step you know,
you need one of these guys that are that are
injured to step up.

Speaker 9 (42:27):
I mean, well, a great camp he has and we
like that.

Speaker 2 (42:32):
That's good.

Speaker 9 (42:33):
That's one but we have I mean Diggs is a
huge question mark, yeah, you know, and Bland Actually he
takes a lot of chances. You know, there's a reason
he got six picks or whatever it was like that
he gets burned sometimes, of course.

Speaker 2 (42:49):
I mean, yeah, he's risky. Yeah, and they're not afraid
of him. That's the thing that teams aren't afraid of Bland, and.

Speaker 9 (42:56):
I will throw it him, especially if you've got Dag call.

Speaker 2 (42:59):
The other exactly. So huge question marks at corner. That's
one of those positions. I said it earlier. There's three
or four spots on this team that I think are
going to be there's gonna be a player on this
roster that from another team. Corner has got to be
one of them, if not two, if not two.

Speaker 9 (43:16):
So and what about this guy that we just signed,
does he you got any gumption.

Speaker 2 (43:21):
Or tell me the name.

Speaker 4 (43:25):
There was a free.

Speaker 9 (43:26):
Agent signing just last week at the corner position.

Speaker 2 (43:31):
Now I'm just going to say nobody that they've brought
in or you're like, oh, that's the answer, you know
what I mean, it's there's there's not there's there's there's
guys that that are trying to fill in and help
and all that, but but not to the point where
you know, there's still kind of a camp body, uh
status right now?

Speaker 9 (43:50):
So all right, and we none of our stud site
beasts cann't bounce down there, right like.

Speaker 2 (43:58):
I mean mcwama is kind of a back and forth
type of guy. But now not really a lot of
those safeties are linebacker type guys, you know, if they're
going to move to another position to be linebackers, So
you really don't have that. I mean, Childress, the rookie
from Kentucky we talked about, he's he's in that boat
and he can kind of do that one.

Speaker 3 (44:19):
Ye.

Speaker 2 (44:19):
Thomas is a guy too, there's a safety that can
play some in corners, so you know he's he's a
guy that that could also be there as well.

Speaker 9 (44:27):
And he's been flashing too.

Speaker 2 (44:29):
Yeah, yeah, he's had some moments.

Speaker 9 (44:31):
So and then I guess like just as a follow
up and I'll take this off there. But if you
wanted to talk about whether our new linebackers can cover
or not, I don't really know what their strengths are.
I know they can tackle.

Speaker 2 (44:42):
Okay, Yeah, thanks for having me, Thanks for the call.
Good luck there in Alaska. That's awesome, you know it
all right? Well, I heard him say born and raised
in Abilene, so that's that's not far from you know,
the smallest town that gets mentioned here the most is Stanford, Texas,
of course, which is about forty five minutes from Abilene,
which my wife's from. We got, you know, three or

(45:05):
four callers have called in there. That's about about five
percent of the population. But it's awesome. I'm glad we're
putting it on the map and A Spence is there
in Alaska and keeping up with the Cowboys doing good.
The linebackers you talked about, you know, coverage has been
pretty good, Jack, Jack Sanborn, I thought had a pretty
nice training camp, and he's a guy that does a

(45:25):
does a good job there and uh in coverage and
Murray can can do that as well. I don't think,
I mean Overshown is maybe the best at it, but
he's banged up. Right now, we're going to take a
break here, We're gonna come back. We've got a chance
for to get one more call in. We'll be right
back after.

There is no eye in Dallas. There is no eye

lone star for that matter. And there's no eye in
how about them Cowboys smear enough knows there's no eye
in football. Football is a wee thing and experience that
is best enjoyed together with good drinks and good folks.

Speaker 10 (46:30):
Home or away.

Speaker 12 (46:30):
We rally together, we cry together, and we always rally
cry together because there's definitely no eye in Cowboys fans
smear enough we do game days. Please drink responsibly.

Speaker 1 (46:43):
The Cowboys story hine.

Speaker 2 (46:50):
All right back here on Cowboys storyline. We got one
final segment. We're gonna take one more callers, Gonna be
real quick here. The last caller will be Fernando. He's
been holding for a little bit. Rana in Miami for Randa.
What's up?

Speaker 4 (47:02):
All right, Nick, I'm gonna make it quick. We made
training camp this year. We stayed at that townhouse place
or Sweeter or something, and we're leaving back to Miami today.
We met Mickey, we met I saw Christy Scales, and
I saw Tyler Booker. He was staying at the hotel
with his family.

Speaker 2 (47:22):
Okay, nice, that was.

Speaker 4 (47:24):
So yeah, So that was pretty cool. Uh. And then
the question is our defensive coordinator. We played the Bears
like two or three years ago in Texas. When the
Bears came out with the orange outfit, we ran up
and down that defense. Do you think that defense will

(47:46):
be good because we we I mean Doc looked like
a Hall of Famer that day. Yeah, So what do
you think about that defense of theirs?

Speaker 2 (47:55):
Well, how did Micah play against the against the Cowboys?

Speaker 8 (47:59):
They?

Speaker 2 (47:59):
I mean I played against the Bears. I don't think
you played against the Cowboys. Now, I think thanks for
the call. We're gonna We're gonna move on. But I'll
answer that. I mean, I I just think that's a
tough comparison. Uh, their defense has been pretty good in
Chicago the last couple of years. They they they take
the ball away that they've been solid. Now they have

(48:21):
some issues, but they don't have the star players either.
You know, I think they had ro Kwan Smith or
whatever traded them to to Baltimore. They're not keeping their
guy like like Micah Parsons, and so you know, they
you give, you give a coordinator like Ibra Flus, a
lot of really talented players on all three phases, you know,

(48:43):
from defensive end, linebacker, cornerback, they're they're gonna play, They're
gonna play well, They're can play better than that. Michael
Parson is gonna make this defense much better and and
let's not forget. I mean, the Cowboys offense has been good.
What I mean they they've done that to other defenses
as well. Uh, we've seen a lot of games where
they've gone up in down the field with them. So
that doesn't necessarily a knock on this coordinator. There's if
