Speaker 1 (00:02):
The following.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
He is a production of Dallas Cowboys dot Com and
the Dallas Cowboys Football Club. Cowboys This is Cowboys storyline
presented by Gillette, the official shave of the Dallas Cowboys.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
Here's Nick Eatman, Hello and welcome to Cowboys storyline presented
(00:44):
by Gillette. It's Friday, December the fifth. It doesn't really
matter what day it is. It's the day after Cowboys
take a big loss in Detroit, forty four to thirty.
Crazy game, and I kind of fuck he would that's
it would be a crazy game. You didn't know how
it would turn out. Man, I fell for it. I'll
(01:07):
I fell for it. I thought, oh, I thought the
Lions had injuries. I thought Saint Brown's foot was coming off.
I thought they didn't have any offensive alignment. Okay, I
don't know what that was. That was another trick play
by Dan Campbell and the Lions. They got us on
that one, and its turned out the Cowboys were the
ones that were down one two receivers. We'll talk about that. Obviously.
(01:32):
CD had a great game until he got injured, and
then they needed someone to step up. Ryan Illinois did,
George Pickens did not, and uh, you know that's that's
obviously something that we'll discuss. It's been talked about a
lot so far. With the Cowboys lose forty four to thirty,
what does that do for the playoff chances? Well, I
know it hurts it pretty bad. I mean, they didn't
(01:53):
have any even for error, and they had a lot
of errors. Uh six, six and one. It's got to
keep playing. Four games left happens. But you know, obviously
it's an uphill battle at this point, but you're not eliminated.
And so that they'll keep they'll keep fighting and on
that one. And so I really hope we don't talk
about any event in April, but some of you might
(02:15):
might want to. But I think the next big event
is the one against I guess Minnesota in ten days.
They need ten days. You know, I'm not gonna say that.
You know, I'm not gonna throw out any excuses. There's
no excuses. But this team's played what four games in
eighteen days, and it kind of looked like it. You know,
it's firstly on defense. The defense was the worst that
(02:36):
we've seen them play since since some of the changes.
Uh again, not an excuse, it just they just looked
a little bit like it's hired team and and the
But the Lions have played pretty much the same schedule
than they didn't. They were a lot more energized, So
give them credit for that. All right, eight and eight
A five, five, two two nine seven. Let's talk about it. Chris,
Saratoga Springs, New York is first, Chris, what's.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
Not too much? That was a tough game last night.
You don't win many. You don't win many NFL games
when they turned the ball over multiple times and have
so many self inflicted wounds. I think last night we
got to the Pittsburgh George Pickens, not the Cowboys. George Pickens.
Defense didn't play great, offense didn't play great. The tackles,
for me, a lot of lookout blocks. Those are our
(03:21):
offensive tackles need help. They didn't get much help, and
it showed with the pressure they gave up. So we
need to I think this seasons it's a long way
long road to try to make the playoffs. I doubt
we're gonna make it. Mike, we should focus on these
offensive tackles in the draft next year, for sure. One
positive I had is my voice all NOOI another great
(03:42):
game by him, very proud of that kid. He works hard.
I just I wish, you know, George would have stepped
up a little bit more. Other than that, again, we
need to play better. There's there's no if, stands or
butts about it. We got to play better, period. And
that's that's really all I got.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
Yeah, all right, Chris, appreciate it.
Speaker 4 (04:04):
You know.
Speaker 1 (04:04):
I know, it's a long night for everybody, you know.
I mean now, especially my guy, h Chris in the back.
I mean, man, he's going to do this, what's seven
times today? And got a I know it was four
am we got off the plane last night, and uh
and and but by the time you get home, who knows,
who knows what time it is, and then we're getting
(04:24):
up for you know, taking kids to school and all that.
I say all that because I'm talking about Chris and
Saratoga Springs and our next caller too. It's a long
night for everybody, you know. I mean, it's whether or
not you go to sleep at midnight one whatever it is.
You know, games like that are tough, especially when you
put so much into it, and so you can hear
the frustration and Chris's voice right there, and you just
(04:46):
got to play better, and you wish those guys would
have stepped up. And you know, I said, I'm not
going to get into the next year and then you
don't have to. But we all know there's a big
decision the Cowboys have to make regard George Pickens and
a game like this does it Does it affect you
(05:06):
and not just the way Pickens played? You know, do
you have any other young receivers that are making the
league minimum that look like they, if they give an opportunity,
they can be a really, really big player. You know,
does Illinois change some things there? I don't know, but
you know, I don't like, I'm not giving up on
anybody or anything. Yeah, you Pickens is you've You've got,
(05:31):
You've got some Sometimes he's one way and the other
times he's other. We haven't really seen this a lot,
but that they just needed him to really step up.
They needed him to make some big plays, and it
just was off. You know, he was open at times,
the routes just weren't crisp. The the slant that's just
been killing teams all years wasn't hitting the same, the
(05:58):
deep ball that he kind of almost looks like he
kind of tried to get out of the way, like
like it good to hit him. I'm sorry, I'm watching
this offensive pass interference penalty on Ferguson and I I'm
a little distracted. I'm gonna go to Dylan Northport, Florida.
I bet he has something to say on that. Dylan,
what's up?
Speaker 5 (06:18):
Hey?
Speaker 1 (06:18):
What's up?
Speaker 3 (06:18):
Man?
Speaker 6 (06:18):
How you doing m.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
Good and taking a drink getting a little energy this morning?
Speaker 6 (06:25):
I got you.
Speaker 7 (06:26):
Yeah, that wasn't pass interference.
Speaker 8 (06:27):
That was a garbage call.
Speaker 7 (06:28):
But who else's garbage?
Speaker 9 (06:31):
Man?
Speaker 3 (06:31):
Was the kick team?
Speaker 7 (06:32):
And this isn't talk to about nearly enough, dude. The
Lions were starting at like the forty fifty yard line
every drive and it was disgusting. It was a guy
looked like scoon Maker returning kicks and he's getting all
the way up there every single kick, and it's like
they need twenty yards in there and field goal range,
over and over and over and then on the flip side.
You know, I don't know what's up with Turpin. I
(06:53):
don't know if it's just not getting blocked up right
or what, but it's you know, he jogs up count
to where the guys are blocking and just kind of
gets tackled, and you know that's that's that's kind of
getting frustrating to watch the defensively corners are getting lit up.
I would have liked to have seen them play more,
you know, press coverage, if they were going to play
so much man just because amen Ra apparently had a
(07:13):
hurt leg, but I couldn't tell. I don't know if
there was some funny business going on with the injury report,
some gamesman the ship or what. But he looked totally fine.
But I mean, supposedly he's got a bad leg. Jamison's
not a physical receiver, So I would have liked to
see them play closer and at least challenge these guys.
You can't play eight yards off and just let them
on crossing routes all night long. You can't cover fifty
three yards of the field man man without playing press.
(07:35):
It's just not possible. And then you know the last thing,
man shot. He's getting a lot of heath kicking field goals.
I would have kicked every single field goal that he kicked.
I was totally fine with it.
Speaker 10 (07:43):
I agree with what you said.
Speaker 7 (07:44):
I saw your tweet about just before halftime there about
keeping the offense that to try to maybe take some
more time off. But because of those field goals you kicked,
you were in the game, yeah till the very end, right,
So I'm taking the points there. I don't have any
issues with that. But that's all I got, Ran, I
have a good one.
Speaker 1 (07:59):
Yeah, thank you. I'll address that part too, because I was.
I wouldn't say he did, but I mean that really
was bothersome to me right before the half. And I
think some of the some of the responses didn't really
get what I was saying. And I agree with you, Dylan.
I think I would have kicked every field goal as well.
(08:20):
Had no issues with kicking any of the field goals
when they you know, when they did. The problem I
had was right before the half and it's it's third
down and long and Ferguson makes a play and kind
of gets you know, ten yards or so and gets
it to fourth and four with about fifty five seconds
(08:42):
to go, clock running, and I'm looking at Dan Campbell,
and Dan Campbell is looking across the field, and as
soon as Aubrey comes onto the field, he calls the
time out. That is where I thought the Cowboys made
a huge mistake. I'm not saying that you have to
go for it. But what I would do, You keep
dak on the field, don't change the offense, get up
(09:03):
there like you're gonna call a play, and you could
call it if you want it. If you like the look,
go for it. Probably what's gonna happen. He's not gonna
call a time out because he doesn't want to help
you get a touchdown before the half, so he's waiting
and waiting. You get up there and you wait, and
you bark the signals and all that, and they don't jump.
Then you call your time out with about twenty eight seconds,
(09:25):
you kick the field goal, you kick it off. Maybe
you just boot this one out of the end zone
and you probably don't give up a field goal there.
But that's that's right there. It's just that was my
issue right before the half, just a little clock management
of just just bleeding the clock a little bit, and
that I thought that was a big mistake there. Obviously,
(09:46):
they lost by fourteen, so that's not I mean, it's
not just about a field goal. But you know, if
you would have told me they're gonna throw up an
interception right in the first play of the third quarter
and give up a touchdown, go down eighteen and then
I guess none of that really matters. But you know,
all right, let's let's keep going. Uh, who's next? Kevin
(10:08):
in New Jersey? Kevin?
Speaker 6 (10:10):
Hey? Nick?
Speaker 1 (10:11):
Hey, how are you doing.
Speaker 3 (10:13):
I'm doing okay.
Speaker 5 (10:14):
Uh.
Speaker 10 (10:15):
I was following up on last week's call where I
was pleading for the Cowboys to show up last night.
So I guess, you know, last year when I came
down to the game with the family and they only
scored nine points, that was frustrating. So I was hoping
for something.
Speaker 6 (10:31):
More than that.
Speaker 10 (10:32):
In a way, I guess you could say there's an improvement,
but you know, the the glaring issue to me, And
I'm calling because I was curious about your thoughts. I'm
trying to wrap my head around what's going on on
the defense. You know, I'm looking at it from a
fans perspective. I don't know all the details you know,
behind it, but it just seems like a really kind
(10:56):
of boring conservative you know, zones scheme, and you know
it's reflected by maybe the lack of turnovers.
Speaker 3 (11:04):
And you know, I.
Speaker 10 (11:05):
Called a couple of weeks ago, I was mentioned it
to you about you know how I thought maybe glass
half full was Logan Wilson coming in to kind of
take some of the pressure off of Overshown as he's
coming back from injury. But I'm curious about your thoughts.
What is with the linebacker rotation.
Speaker 3 (11:22):
I've always felt.
Speaker 10 (11:22):
Like like when you have good players and they're solid,
like keep them out there. But for the Cowboys, it's
like every series they rotate the linebackers, and I feel
like maybe that hurts them. Maybe they're not I mean,
I guess it's resting them to a degree, but it
also feels like they're maybe getting out of the flow
of the game. I mean, I don't want to single
anybody out in particular, but I feel like they're really
(11:44):
struggling in a linebacker position, especially in the middle of
the field. There's all these crossing routes and they're really
taking advantage of us. You know, I know, you know
the lines are a good team, right, so, like you know, offensively,
they have weapons. But can you share your thoughts on
maybe what you think about that linebacker rotation, why they're
doing it, and and maybe how they can possibly fix it, because,
(12:05):
like I said, I just think the defensive scheme is
just hey, just old or tired?
Speaker 1 (12:09):
Hey, Kevin, Hey, have you ever heard that phrase when
they say, uh, if you have two quarterbacks, uh, it
means you have none?
Speaker 10 (12:17):
You know, something like that.
Speaker 1 (12:19):
You know, like when the team says that, like we
got two guys or we got three quarterback it means
you really don't have any. I wonder if that's sort
of the neighborhood of what we're talking about here with linebackers.
You know, you got five? Are any of them good?
You know? And I say that with everybody loves overshown.
You know, is he is he ready to play?
Speaker 5 (12:42):
You know?
Speaker 1 (12:42):
Is he ready to kind of be that guy he
was last year? And I think he is. I think
he's your best one. But I just it's like, who
do you Who do you put in here? Who do
you say? Because nobody is It's like, you see, I've
seen basketball teams like that where thanks for the call, Kevin.
We're going to keep the lines going. I appreciate your call.
And it was a really good question. It's like when
(13:03):
you when you have some of the basketball teams that
I followed, when there's seven or eight, nine guys, but
you don't know who the best guys are, and so
you're like, what about this combination, what about with this guy?
What if? What if these guys play together. I feel
like that's sort of happening a little bit at linebacker.
I don't think there's a huge difference between Logan Wilson
(13:24):
and Shamar James or Overshown and Leah foul and Kenneth Murray.
You know, every once in a while they all do
something and then they'll also do something. You're like, I
don't know about that play. It does feel like Murray's
the one that's that's out of position a lot. He
leads the team in tackles, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything.
(13:45):
He means he's out there the most, but it's not
a it's not a strong position. It's not there's there's
just no other way around it. So, uh, you know,
maybe Wilson needs some more time here, maybe him An
Overshown together, But that's always a tricky balance of depth
and keeping them fresh and also out of the flow
(14:06):
of the game. I thought that's a that's a great point.
It's it's the way with running backs a lot, you know.
I mean, you want these guys that want this one
two punch, but at the same time is it is
it really taking him out of rhythm? Let me go
back to this really might go back to Dylan's call.
He was talking about the corners and the crossing routes.
(14:27):
The Lions have an unbelievable advantage, and I don't I mean,
I don't know why they haven't had some success here
or more success this year. But Jamiir Gibbs is an
absolute problem because I think, I mean, obviously the most
underrated part of his game is is the way that
(14:49):
he catches the ball out of the backfield, but the
way that they lined him up. And I talked to
a defensive coach before the game and he said that
he was worried about as a receiver because they don't
just line him up and then rotating him back. They
line him up out there and now are you gonna
(15:10):
put a linebacker out there? You're gonna put safety? It
just it just changes the covers. I hate to compare
him to Hall of Famer because you know, he's still
early in his career, but but when the Rams had
Marshall Fulk and they could use him like that, where
sometimes he just would run a route, it just changes
everything of what you're trying to do. He's a he's
(15:33):
a problem. And uh man, he was a good player,
he was. He was great last night. I'm ay And Napa,
California is next.
Speaker 3 (15:41):
Hey, good morning, Nick.
Speaker 5 (15:42):
How are you good?
Speaker 1 (15:43):
How are you?
Speaker 5 (15:44):
I'm great, man, I'm great, great in life, but not
so good in football. Man. I really think that. Yeah,
you're hitting on a lot of points. Man. You know,
the linebacker play was was not good. It hasn't been good.
Our secondary was bad. I wish we would have took
(16:06):
a page out of what the Lions were doing. And
like you know they I know that they tend to
press press the receivers, you know, and play a lot
of man up. I wish we would have did a
little bit more of that because we didn't have the
room to allow guys just to kind of run freely.
Like it seemed like all of our dbs were in
a chase mode and even our linebackers like the whole night.
Speaker 1 (16:29):
And I mean, you know, but let me let me
cut you off by that, and and I'm not disagreeing
with your point, but I'm just just remember this. The Cowboys.
They don't how many sacks did they get on Cowboys one?
Maybe I know, I know one for sure, and the
one guy their best pass rusher. They only got one sack,
and the guy that got the sack is the guy
(16:49):
that the Lions didn't want. So the point that I'm
trying to make is the Lions could play more press
coverage because they've got Aiden Hutchinson. They've got some guys
that can get home quickly. The cow always have James Houston,
who the Lions didn't want. That's their best pass rusher,
especially with Clowney out, you know what I mean. So
so it's tougher to play up there when when you don't,
you don't think you guys can get home, especially on
(17:10):
the outside.
Speaker 3 (17:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (17:13):
Yeah, But in the same instance, like they were going
to play that no matter what, and they just rolled
the safety over the top of Pickens like all night,
even when CD was in there, that safety still played
over the top and it was like there was you know,
the Cowboys offensively didn't adjust from that, and I just
didn't see why we didn't try to do more of that. Obviously,
(17:33):
Gibbs was a problem man, like when he was in
the backfield when he went out, you know, as a
as a receiver, like we weren't going to get away
from that, you know, and then overall there was just
self inflicted wounds. Like you know, Ferguson didn't have his
best game. You know, obviously they attacked Rebel. You know,
they knew what they wanted to do there. You know,
(17:53):
it was some growing pains. Just I think you hit
right earlier when you said they looked like a tire team,
because that's that's what it looked like. They looked tired.
They weren't mentally sharp. It was a lot of self
inflicted wounds, and it was like it wasn't like they
were out of the game. They were in the game
the whole time. Just they can continue to kick themselves
(18:14):
when they were, you know, geting some momentum. So man,
I'm not upset about it. I mean I'm upset about it,
but in the long term, I'm still just like, let's play.
It's it's gonna be fun no matter what happens. Went
out and don't make the playoffs. It's cool, like you know,
like just want to see what happens again. I see
what the future is. And you know, they got to
(18:35):
figure some things out with Pickings and for sure, Soornstein
got to go the coach for special teams. He was
the coach, the defensive coordinator out here with the Niners
last year, and I watched him up close. He's he's
not good. He doesn't coach up any of his players.
Like the one kick right before half Aubrey barely made
(18:56):
that because he and it was like the most easiest kick,
and he like goes up there like you know, he's
like he's just just gonna make it automatically. And I
just don't think Sorenson's getting the best out of the guys.
Speaker 6 (19:08):
You know.
Speaker 5 (19:09):
Turpin seems like he's regressing. He's scared to return the
ball or something where he's always wanting to call fair
fair catch. Then real life realizes he has rooms. So
all right, I get rid of him. But yeah, I mean,
let's go Cowboys.
Speaker 1 (19:22):
Hey, all right, I appreciate it. All right, Let's let's
try to keep it moving. A lot of stuff there. Yeah, Ferguson,
I'm watching I keep watching this this play on you know,
NFL Network shows it, and it sounds like that Brian
branch On, that play suffered in a torn achilles on
that play, that safety, but that let's go to that
(19:46):
that play right there that that fourth down or third
down call. The thing that gets me about that is
that two officials through the flag. Okay, one from the
other side, one from this side. You can't tell me
that both of them, well I know that, we know
both of them didn't say offensive pass interference or they
(20:07):
would have talked about it for two seconds. Instead, they
talked about it for about a minute. So to me,
and as weird as this sounds, why not just say
offensive interference and we have defensive interference? Those files OFFSET
will replay the down because at that point it just
comes down to seniority. Who's the loudest in the room,
(20:30):
who can, you know, dominate the conversation, because what one
guy saw it as defensive interference one guy and then
the rest of the world. And then another guy saw
it as offensive interference and that guy's conversation one. I mean,
that's it's ridiculous. I mean, he if you go back
and watch the play, the linebacker racked Ferguson. That's what happened.
(20:53):
He got beat and he racked him and then he's
trying to swim through that and they call that that
it's absly. That's the worst call. That I've seen all
season long for when the Cowboys games, that is the
worst call. The second one is probably probably went against
the other team. Maybe it might have been one of
the Chiefs offensive interference.
Speaker 9 (21:14):
You know.
Speaker 1 (21:15):
Maybe I just don't like that play when Worthy got
called for it against the Cowboys. I didn't like it
when Pickens got called for it in the last night either.
I thought that was that was a bad call. I
may talked about special teams with Sorensen. It's it's not good.
I mean it's weird because if you if your kicker
(21:37):
sets NFL records, it's the first one to ever make,
you know, three kicks of fifty five yards or more.
He just casually hits a sixty three yarder and and
then you know, makes five field goals and Sam Williams
blocks the field goal and you have a bad special
teams night. I mean, that's hard to do if you're
going to do this over here. But that's what happened.
That outweighed all the good stuff that you saw over here.
(21:58):
They can't they couldn't star up this guy. And I mean, sorry,
he doesn't pass the eye test for a kick returner,
but he certainly, you know, he was awesome and just
to the point where man Aubrey just kick it out,
then kick it out of the in zone and go
to the thirty five if that's what it's going to be,
you know. So anyways, I just got to break here
(22:18):
on Cowboys story and I'll be right back after.

All right back here on Cowboys Storyline presented by Gillette.
I'm Nick Eatman. We're talking about the Cowboys forty four
thirty loss to the Lions. Let's go to Sergeant su
who's been holding Sergeant Sue? What's up? Man from Fort Worth?
Speaker 6 (24:24):
A lease?
Speaker 15 (24:24):
Everybody how you doing, Nick, How are you? I'm good, brother.
You know, I don't want to overreact to this game
as far as what I think that this team is,
but it's really hard not to face the realities, which
may be that we might not make the playoffs.
Speaker 10 (24:38):
Now.
Speaker 15 (24:39):
I do think that championship teams are allowed to have
a bad game, that they're allowed to come out flat.
But unfortunately, you know, because of the way the season started,
we didn't we don't have that luxury, you know, to
have a bad game. We didn't have that luxury to
have like a little bit of a hiccup. And you know,
I just think that that was just seemed to like
really really like to prove how.
Speaker 9 (25:00):
Regilient we are.
Speaker 15 (25:01):
And I think that we don't have to do that.
Like I wish we could have just come out and
not have to face the uh, the self inflicted wounds
and stuff.
Speaker 16 (25:09):
You know.
Speaker 15 (25:09):
It's just it's just a little bit unfortunate. But regardless,
I'm gonna try to keep it positive as I always
do it. I mean, I'm still excited about how this
team responds. I do think that they have the ability
to win out. I never have been and never will
be the type of fan, which is not wrong, but
I'm personally I'm not the type of fan that wants
to lose out for a pick or anything like that. Like,
I want to see how they respond. I want to
(25:30):
see how they continue to build, you know, getting people
back from injuries. Biggs is gonna come back. Let's see
see what happens next.
Speaker 6 (25:36):
Man.
Speaker 15 (25:36):
So I'm not hanging hanging my hat up, you know
what I mean. I'm not ready to say that the
season is lost or you know.
Speaker 9 (25:41):
Tuck my tail.
Speaker 15 (25:42):
I'm ready to see how this team bounces back, man.
And I'm excited and hopefully the things fall the way
that they need to and we can still make a push.
But if not, like I do, I do believe in momentum,
and I do believe in confidence, and I think that
Dallas has the ability to build both of those going forward. Man,
I appreciate you to take my call.
Speaker 1 (25:56):
I appreciate that, Serge. It's a good, good call. And
you know, and and we kind of we kind of
knew that this was gonna happen, right, I mean, I
don't think anyone I didn't think they were going to
just run the table. Uh, that's just not the way
the NFL works. Uh, and they're not They're not good
enough to do that. I mean, you know, let's they've
they've won some games, they once a games. Got some
(26:19):
students coming through here and I guess they're on field
trip or whatever. So this guy right here, we need
to sign him up. He needs to play and we
need him on the on the defensive line.
Speaker 4 (26:32):
No.
Speaker 1 (26:32):
We I didn't think that they would run the table.
I really didn't. But you know, let's not let's not
forget that. You know, Jake Ferguson fumbled on the final
drive against the Eagles that went out of bounced the
cowb would go kick a field goal, you know, I
mean Pickings fumbled the ball and Turpin recovered it and
(26:53):
the Chiefs, you know, they kicked a field goal and
they were up by ten. The Chiefs didn't have enough
time to come back. You know, last night Ferguson fumbled,
they recovered it, they go score touchdown. Pickens fumbled, Tyler
Smith picks it up and I thought Tyler Smith's going
to score a touchdown. But you know they've been playing
(27:13):
this way and the ball bounces it one way, bounces
the other, and it did not bounce their way. And
so my point is is when you play that way,
you're not gonna win seventh straight. You're just not so.
But I woke up, you know, I don't know hour
after I went to sleep, but I haven't had a
different opinion about it. Was it was a little frustrated
(27:35):
with the team and this, you know, just knowing what
the loss meant and all that. But I had to
kind of stop and say, you know, twenty seven to nine,
it's twenty seven to nine, and then next thing you know,
it's thirty to twenty seven. And as I wrote in
my column if you've read that, I thought the game
was just an example of this whole season. I mean,
(27:57):
that game was pretty much how you would discribe this
season same way. Started out, it's okay, and then then
it's bad, and then he's this is looking terrible. Is
not looking good at all? Oh man, you know they're
gonna get blown out, they're gonna have a bad draft
pick and all that, and then they suck you back
in and I'm like, well, hold on, now watch this.
(28:19):
Boom boom boom boom. Wait wait wait, is there a
chance their chance they're gonna come back and win? Is
there a chance they're going to go make the playoffs.
No they're not, you know. And the only thing about
that game that's not going to be the way you
described twenty twenty five is the way Pickens played. Because
Pickens is gonna have a better season that he's a
he's a Pro Bowl player. He's gonna have better season
(28:39):
than that then than what he played in that game.
But all right, let's move on here. We got uh
Rob in Vegas. Hey, Nick, Hey, what's up.
Speaker 8 (28:52):
Tough night? Yeah, it sucked. Unfortunately, We've seen this before
in these type of games, playoff atmosphere games. We always
we lose the turnover battle and a penalty battle, and
it kills us. And that's what killed us last night.
I you know, as bad as the kick return coverage
(29:14):
was and all that, it was the turnovers and the
penalties that that penalty that Ferguson had hands to the
face where we would had first in goal because Pickings
got the pass at the farance that was nullified, and
and then Pickings doing some dumb stuff. You just can't
(29:35):
overcome it. We're not we're a good team. We're we're
not a great team. I what sucks is we're wasting
another really good year from our quarterback, just like we
did with Romo. It's it's we've had these.
Speaker 5 (29:51):
You know.
Speaker 8 (29:53):
It's going to come to an end eventually, and it
just sucks that we're wasting it. You know what else
do we need? Got two number one wide receivers. You
had a running game. Unfortunately we improved the defense. Okay,
we bought guys in to stop to run. Our past
defense is bad. We have nobody that could pressure the
quarterback consistently. I don't care what they pay Land. He's
(30:15):
not an outside corner. You made the mistake of paying
him as an outside corner. But he's not. He's not good.
He's an average outside guy, but he's a really good
slot guy and that's where he needs to play. Over shown.
You know, he's not the same player. Hopefully he gets there,
but right now he's not. And I agree with that
(30:35):
of the call up rotating linebackers is like what you said,
If you're rotating guys, it's because you don't have one.
And to talk about pickings being in almost sixty I
grew up in the era of there was no free agency,
so these players had nowhere to go, So you know,
you could maybe you know, controlled more or whatever whatever,
(31:02):
And I always felt I really didn't care what they
did off the field. You know, some of the greats,
we all know who they are, weren't the greatest off
the field, but Comes Sundaday were the best. And that's
how I believe. But I kind of changed my stance
on that because of the amount of money and the
salary cap. So if we're going to look at Pickens,
(31:24):
you have to really say to yourself, are you going
to pay him thirty five million dollars a year? And
now you have to worry about him like this because
Lamb you don't have to worry. We got lucky with him.
Speaker 5 (31:41):
You know.
Speaker 8 (31:42):
And now with Flownoy playing really good, and don't get
me wrong, he's probably playing really good because Pickens and
Lamb are on the field. Pickets is there. So I've
seen that story before where the third guy moves up
to the second spot and oh, how come he's not
(32:02):
as good? So I don't want to get rid of Pickens,
don't get me wrong, but I'm sure you got to
be leary of the money just because of the salary cap,
just because of how much it eats up. I don't
care how much he makes.
Speaker 3 (32:15):
It's this.
Speaker 8 (32:16):
It's so much like I don't begrudge these guys getting paid,
but they get paid. But it has to hit because
if it doesn't hit, you're screwed. So that's my only concerned.
Let's see what he's got four games. He's got four
games to really turn. Listen, he had to beg it.
I think he hurt his shoulder on the first play.
(32:36):
If you saw the way he fell, he had his
shoulder like tinned back, and he knew Pickens. It's on
the like the first play of the game or the
first pass that they threw to him. He fell weird,
and if you watch the replay, his arm instead of
putting his hand out was tucked behind him. His shoulder
took the full brunt and you could see him shaking
(32:58):
it out. So you know, I don't know, I don't want.
It just sucked. It sucks that it's you know obviously, all.
Speaker 1 (33:06):
Right, Rob, I appreciate it. Thanks for the call. You're right,
and let's talk about Pickings little more. It is a
very challenging decision that they've got to make, and I
think what's going to happen because when I ask people
about it that are kind of in the know. They
just kind of shrug, like, franchise them. I mean, it's
(33:26):
not not that hard. Just franchise them. I mean, that's
that's the that's the response. So I think that is
that's the answer there for them is And honestly, it
might be the best answer because because the here, here's
what do we know? Is he a great player? Yes?
(33:47):
Is he? Is he worthy of that kind of money
the way he's playing this year? Yes? And does he
help this offense?
Speaker 3 (33:56):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (33:56):
He does. Are you scared to give him that kind
of money and that kind of commitment?
Speaker 17 (34:02):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (34:03):
So that's what the franchise tag does.
Speaker 3 (34:06):
It.
Speaker 1 (34:06):
It's a lot of money. It's not thirty five, it'll
probably twenty seven, twenty eight, but it's one year and
then we'll see how he does on it. See Holly performs,
holl he acts. I mean, he's missing meetings, he's being
late to things, he's missing a bus, he's getting fined
all over the place. And that's only a salary of
about one point five million or one three I don't
know what a salary is, but it's not that much.
(34:28):
But that's who you're getting right now. So give him
that much money and see see what happens. If it's
a train wreck all year long, then you know, you
have to figure out if it's worth it. Just like
Rob was saying on the calls, there's a lot of
great players that were it was worth it. You know,
he drives you crazy, but it was worth it. And
(34:49):
another thing about the pick and CD thing, Let's not
forget two weeks ago we were sitting here and going
wrong with CD. You can't catch the ball, maybe you
trade CD. I mean that's the way it goes. You
knew the defenses weren't going to continue to play pickings
this way, and they haven't. They've changed. And what happened. Oh,
CD's gone off the last two weeks and he's went
over one hundred yards. I mean, CD was was looking
(35:10):
at a two hundred yard game. He had one hundred
and what twenty yards and he got hurt in the
second quarter like he he went for two twenty seven
on the Lions like two years ago, and he was
probably looking at that again, all of those flinoy yards
probably would have gone to CD, or most of them.
I mean he really he was having a monster game.
So then what would have happened the next week is
say CD doesn't get hurt. What happened to the next week?
(35:31):
Oh well, out of the vikings, Well, Miking's gonna shift
it over and they're gonna cover CD again. I guess
what Pickens goes. I mean, that's the problem that they have.
Some weeks, it's gonna be this. Some week, it's gonna
be that. This one certainly wasn't Pickens night. But you know,
start start cheating back over to CD and see what happens.
That's the beauty of what you have. And you know,
(35:51):
it just it just wasn't his night. But you know,
I think I think we've seen that he's going to
be that kind of player. All Right, Anthony and Miami,
what's up?
Speaker 9 (36:00):
I didn't need to quick what's up?
Speaker 1 (36:01):
My guy?
Speaker 9 (36:03):
Hey, I'm pretty good man. I just wanted to call
in and say this much. I'm a jetic callers and
I am. I was with a badge of honor. So
I agree with Starge to sue, I don't agree that
we're not going to make it because I did protect
ten sixtion one and I'm not changing. So apparently I
may not have had them winning this game. When you
(36:25):
give thirty twenty seven. I understand people are mad, but
it was thirty twenty seven, So that mean you didn't
lay down. So I'm hearing people garbage. I'm hearing people this.
Speaker 3 (36:33):
I'm hearing people that.
Speaker 9 (36:34):
No, it was thirty twenty seven, so that's not a
lack of effort, you know what I'm saying. It might
not be the result we didn't want. So I'm going
with that now. On the CD thing, he just had
eighteen hundred yards a couple of years ago without GP.
If I got to allocate anything over twenty eight million
me personally, and he probably do to him. No, I'm
fixing other things. I'm fixing my I gotta get some
tackle and I got to work on my defense that
(36:56):
back seven back there.
Speaker 5 (36:58):
So that's just me.
Speaker 9 (36:59):
But anyway, I say positive, man six one.
Speaker 1 (37:01):
If they want it, all right, all right, appreciate the call.
Speaker 9 (37:06):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (37:06):
You know, they've they've been you know, the underdog, you know,
with three straight games. I mean and those first two
were close, close, but the Cowboys figure out a way
to win at home, and uh, you know, now you're
going back to home two straight games, uh, Minnesota and
then the Chargers, So you're probably gonna be favored in
(37:27):
these four games. You know, one these stats that I
was I was looking at. It's just one of the
things I wrote in my column. You know, you're like, oh,
Cowboys lost forty four to thirty. So time possession, you
know they didn't have no, No, they won that they
want they actually had that by like three minutes. Okay,
first downs, no Cowboys had that too. What about third downs?
Obviously a third No. Cowboys actually had a better percentage
(37:48):
than the Lions. Total yards, yep, Cowboys. Penalties. Actually, the
Lions had one more penalty than the Cowboys if you
believe that. Dallas did have more yards, but Lions did
have more penalties. Turnovers three nothing just hits you in
the face, like Ferguson got called for on that pass
to Pickens, and that was the theme of the night.
(38:10):
Just hands to the face. And you know, you guys
know me. You've heard you know that's my least favorite penalty.
It's the one that bothers me the most in all
of football. His hands to the face. I absolutely hate it.
Not because of the way they call it, it's just
it's just the moving target. You know, if Ferguson gets
(38:30):
his hand in there on defensive end, Aiden Hutchinson, just
a little bit that in the gates of fifty yard
penalty here David Montgomery can have the ball and just
slow Marquise Bell right in the throat and the face.
That's fine, no problem there, Heaven forbid Nate Thomas gets
his hand up in someone's face and then or Picktt, Now, Pickens,
(38:51):
that was a little I think Pickt's trying to get
his hand out of there, but it just it's as funny.
Hands to the face is only a problem unless unless
you run in the football. And then if you're running
the football, then just go ahead and and not knock
out the dB with your with your hand, all right?
Rick in Webster, Massachusetts.
Speaker 16 (39:09):
Hey, Nick, how you do?
Speaker 1 (39:10):
Good? Are you?
Speaker 16 (39:12):
I'm good?
Speaker 3 (39:12):
And I'm good.
Speaker 16 (39:14):
I agree with you, know, with Sargeant Sewer earlier, the uh.
You know, let the season play out, see how things go,
and we and go from there. But I don't know
if you had a title, but I would think. But
last night I heard this thing.
Speaker 3 (39:28):
I got him.
Speaker 16 (39:29):
Maybe this could be a good tile Dallas Cowboys and
the uh. Only Dallas Holby's can beat better than beating
the Dallas Cowboys. You know, i'd say it is dead.
I'm sorry, we're the only we're the only team that
can beat us better than NBLS can.
Speaker 1 (39:46):
Mm hmm, yeah, yeah, I mean that's that's what happened.
Say thanks for the call. And you know, I don't know,
I don't know if you would say that they did that,
you know, last night. But you know, Dak has two interceptions.
That's the stat line you'll see. You'll see Dak. You know,
(40:07):
Dak has two interceptions in the game. But you know,
seventy nine point seven quarterback rating through for you know,
three seventy six was running for his life those two interceptions.
I swear, I mean, what are we playing volleyball again?
Speaker 6 (40:19):
Is that?
Speaker 1 (40:20):
What is that what we're doing? I mean, seriously, and
and and I'm not Dak had some misthrows. I'm not
saying he played a perfect game. He didn't. There was
a couple of passes where you know, he missed. See
he's streaking down the field, he throws it, you know,
out of bounds and the cheerleaders. He had some he
had some bad throws. He was he was under I mean,
both tackles did not play well. So Uh, that's never
(40:43):
going to go well when when neither tackles actually blocking well.
But the interceptions, I mean, both of them are just
just go ahead and you mean, what are you the
cetter and you just lob it up and the other
guy spikes it in. That's pretty much what we were
playing again last night. So that's another thing that he
had to do with. Again, I'm not giving Daka pass.
That wasn't Dak's best game, but just like Miami Anthony
(41:06):
and Miami said, it's twenty seven to nine, and that's saying,
you know, it's thirty to twenty seven without CD and
they're they're fighting and Flinoise, you know, fighting and they're
they're they're trying to get back in it, and they
didn't get back in it. But it just wasn't enough.
All right, let's go to break one more time on

Speaker 1 (42:36):
All right back here on Cowboys starting, I get a
chance for a couple more called Sebastian in Savannah, Georgia's next.
Speaker 18 (42:44):
What's going on?
Speaker 10 (42:44):
Boy?
Speaker 1 (42:44):
How you doing good?
Speaker 6 (42:45):
How are you?
Speaker 18 (42:46):
I'm doing real good? You know it's very appropriate that
it's a rainy day here in Georgia, because it's a
Raineydyan Cowboys nation too. But you know what, Nick, I
don't feel too bad, and I'll tell you why. It's
a tough ass, big physical game against Philadelphia, we win,
big physical game against Kansas City we win. Going to
Detroit where you know it's going to be scrappy, you
know it's going to be physical. And this was the
(43:07):
game that I said we would lose because they had
too much speed.
Speaker 3 (43:11):
It's our Achilles Hills.
Speaker 18 (43:12):
That's been our Achilles Hill off season long right. Your
coaches didn't have the worst game plan. You have a
rookie corner out there. He's getting toasted. This game was
lost in one up front. On both sides of the ball,
there's no seven eleven anymore. You don't have Trayvon Diggs
out there, you don't have Micah Parsons. You can't get
to a quarterback in one point two seconds anymore, and
you leave him in the pocket. They're going to score
(43:33):
on defense on our side.
Speaker 3 (43:34):
Of the ball.
Speaker 18 (43:35):
What can you do, Nick, When you have two Chaz Greens,
you know you're forcing I feel like that may have
to start running a lot more because during that game,
I kept saying, get the ball out, get the ball out,
get the ball out.
Speaker 3 (43:44):
He had no time. I mean poor.
Speaker 18 (43:47):
I think his name is Nate Thompson. He didn't even
know where to look, like he was seeing ghosts.
Speaker 3 (43:52):
He was literally.
Speaker 18 (43:52):
Blocking nothing and there was just a guy in dac
lap the second he looked up. It was unfortunate, but
we lost both sides of the ball on the offense
of the defensive line, and they looked tired. Your best
defensive tackle was on the.
Speaker 10 (44:04):
Floor of half the game.
Speaker 9 (44:06):
It's a it's a tough ass.
Speaker 18 (44:08):
Three very physical games back to back to back. But
like I said, we lose this one, we don't lose
any of the other four going forward, and we'll.
Speaker 3 (44:14):
See what happens at the end of this. You have
a great day.
Speaker 1 (44:17):
All right, You're exactly right about that last part. You'll
see what happens. I don't think the Chaz Green references
is fair. I mean I really don't, not not not
calling Terrence Steel that he didn't have He didn't have
a great game. I mean he certainly didn't have his
his his best game, you know he had. He had
a couple of moments where. I mean, he he had
(44:37):
a couple of nice, really nice blocks, but I mean,
you know, we don't nobody remembers those. Uh, it's it's
the other ones. And and yeah, Doak was Doak was
running for his life, and you know they they didn't
keep the tight ends that in that much to to
help with that. And you know, it's it's it's tough,
you know, having Turpin out there. It's got to be
worth it, you know, because when you have Turpin out there,
(44:59):
he's got to make plays because if he doesn't, he's
taking off a blocker off the field. So you know,
sometimes you want him, sometimes you don't. Davante, you know,
you want to maybe have him chip a little bit.
It just then they tried, they tried different things, and
you know it's not like they didn't move the ball.
They did. They just you know, they they they got
(45:22):
it wasn't even red zone. It was just late in
the it was like thirty yard line or sothern that
penalty and that moved him back and that's why he
was kicking these ninety yard field goals. All right, Anthony
and Columbia South Carolina our last call, Anthony.
Speaker 6 (45:35):
Hey, Nick, how you doing how are you doing. I'm
doing good today, sir, Just quick man. Couldn't it be
that reason Dallas played the way they played last night
and the way they played every year around this time,
just because of the four games in the sixteen seventeen days.
I think those guys are tired. Man. Yeah, And my
(45:56):
question is to you would be why do Dallas do
this every year to accept the schedule like this, to
play the four games in the sixteen or seventeen days?
Why don't they pass it around the other teams? Is
it because the lionlight the Dallas like to be in
the limelight that why do we do that?
Speaker 1 (46:17):
Well, it's you know, the Cowboys don't do it. I
mean they they don't. They don't make that that that schedule,
but but they, you know, they do, like I think
I think that is a problem though, is is you
have a short week and then and then you come
back and then you don't give them a break. That
that is the biggest issue to me. It is not
(46:40):
giving them a break, because it's like with anything, if
you're gonna take money here, at least you're gonna save
money here. But in this case, is that you get
that four days and then and then you got to
play again, and then you play in seven days. That
in some of the Lions, I mean so of the
Lion now they didn't travel. But you know, and and
I'm sorry we had we had to cut you off
because this we're gonna to wrap up the show. But
(47:01):
you make a good point, but it's not one. I
don't think this is the case, you know, because they
would do this with thirty two teams. I don't think it's. Well, Jerry,
here you go, this is what we've got. What do
you think. No, now I don't like this. Take this off,
move us to here. No, it doesn't happen that way,
you know. And so it's not an accepting the schedule
(47:23):
type thing. Now obviously you can, you know, raise your
concerns and things like that. And I'm sure that that
that happened. You know, the Lions played three home games
in a row, three home games in a row. They
one of them against the Giants. They barely won that game,
then Green Bay on Thanksgiving. That you know that that
was a little surprising to have that right there, But
(47:46):
you know, it's player safety is a is a huge deal.
Until until we're talking about playing on four days rest
and things like that. That was my first thought when
I saw CD hit the ground. As soon as he
hit the ground, I was like, well, you know what,
he's probably not coming back from this. And then I thought, well,
they do have ten days. You know, maybe he can
be back. Maybe he could be back in ten days.
(48:08):
We'll see how he is. But but that that is
a that is a problem. The Thanksgiving Day game, that's
one thing, but then to to give them to not
give him ten days after that, then they got to
keep going. It messes up the entire schedule. Sure that
they get ten days after it, but I mean didn't
do any favors with giving them. You know, the three
(48:29):
of the top teams in the NFL from last year,
so we knew it. Like that's the thing when the
schedule goes out, go back to May when it came out.
What's the first thing I know? I said it. Other
people said it right there. Wow, those three games in
a row. That that's just like a flashing light right there,
those three games. And guess what they were They Cowboys
won two of them, they lost the third one. You know,
(48:52):
to think that this team was going to go three,
five and one and then cut, you know, and then
come back from all the stuff that happened and beat
the Raiders. Then sweep that that's probably unrealistic. It didn't happen.
They gave it a go. It didn't happen, does it.
Speaker 3 (49:04):
See?
Speaker 1 (49:04):
Is the season over? Nope, We'll keep We'll keep it going.
We'll see what happens. Four games left. You guys, you know,
did a good job of reiterating that, and we'll see
see what happens. I don't leave me now. I need
you for the for this final month. Hopefully the Cowboys
can stay in it. I know you guys will as well.
Have a great weekend. I keep telling myself it's not Monday,
it's a Friday. Keep telling myself that y'all have a
(49:26):
great weekend. We'll do it again on Monday. For Chris Beam,
I'm Nick Eatman. We'll see that on Cowboys Storyline.
