Speaker 1 (00:04):
The following He is a production of Dallas Cowboys dot
Com and the Dallas Cowboys Football Club.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
Cowboys.

Speaker 3 (00:13):
This is He's Cowboys storyline, brought you by Gillette, the
official razor of the Dallas Cowboys.

Speaker 4 (00:22):
Here's Nick Eatman.

Speaker 5 (00:27):
What's up?

Speaker 6 (00:28):
Welcome to Cowboys Storyline. I am Nick Eatman. This is
the last Cowboys storyline here from Oxnard for me. Next week,
I'll be back in Dallas and I'll be having a
couple of shows from the studio. The rest of the group,
or a lot of the group will still be out here. Yes,
I'm leaving early, bailing out on the team, and I'm

(00:50):
sure those guys will be talking much crap when we
head out early. But it's okay. Next week is first
week of school. We got to get back, you know,
things like that. Still, it's been a heck of a
camp so far. We're gonna end this one the right way.
Sure is Sure was great to see the group that
came out, and I know one of them is already

(01:11):
on the line, so I know that they got back safely.
But it was It was a lot of fun and
it kind of took this thing to the next level.
Every year, everything kind of changes. It's like, all right, well,
now we're gonna do calls. Now we're gonna do the storyline.
Now we're gonna come out to camp. So and I'm
sure next year, I'm already can tell it's gonna even
be bigger than that. So a lot of fun. But

(01:33):
like always, we're gonna talk cowboys, were gonna talk what's
going on with this team? And we got it. We
got one day before the first preseason game. We're gonna
get to see a lot of guys on the field
for the first time, and get to see Brian Schottenheimer
in this coaching staff for the first time and see
what what actually happens in a game. So that should
be a lot of fun. Excited to see that and see,

(01:55):
you know, if they can put maybe a little bit
better showing than what we saw in that practice. Won't
see a lot of the starters, of course, maybe none
of the starters, but for the most part though, it'll
be a lot of the twos and threes, and still
get a chance to see what kind of depth this
team has. All right, let's get started to the phone line.
Brian in Kansas City, start us off.

Speaker 7 (02:17):
Good morning, sir, are you doing all right, doing all right, man.
You know, I was watching some highlights last night and
just interesting how every organization is different. Because the highlights
I was watching was Burrough throwing to Jamar Chase. Okay,

(02:37):
and I'm going, wow, But every organization is different. They
played their starters, they put the you know, he's probably
the second highest paid quarterback in the league, right He's
probably one of the fifty five million guys, and they
got them out there, you know, and the reorganization is
just different. I think we all know the Cowboys is

(02:58):
as an organization is a little more concerned servative about that, right.
But it's just interesting to see and not all the team,
you know, I think there was was there only two
games last night? I think it was two games, but whatever,
it was not everybody did that, but you know, just
kind of an interesting thing to see. The thing that
I was thinking about is when if everybody was healthy,

(03:22):
you know. So I'm just taking the injury bug out
of it for just a second. I think I know
who all the starters are except linebacker and running back.
And I've already said that I don't think the starting
one tech is even on the team right now.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
But the.

Speaker 7 (03:41):
I think if everybody's healthy, I could go down the
line and say this is who I think all the
starters are except those two positions. I just wonder what
your opinion on those two positions are if you have one.
I know, you know we heard Blue has a little
bit of an issue, but is not expected to not
expected to keep model long time. It's not the dreaded

(04:03):
high ankle spring. So but just what you think of
those two positions. And maybe there are leading candidates in
the linebacker room and I just don't know who they are.

Speaker 8 (04:13):
That's all I got for.

Speaker 7 (04:14):
You this morning. Man, listen to what you have to
say off the.

Speaker 6 (04:16):
Air, Okay, I appreciate it. You know, if the linebackers
are all healthy, like you said, then then you know
it's a pretty strong group. I mean, because if everyone's healthy,
then I think your linebackers are overshown in Kenneth Murray
overshown is not going to be ready, but Samborn, Marrislee,
if i'll I mean the combination of these guys, and

(04:38):
then you throw in Shamar James has done a really
good job as a rookie. De Monte Clark's had pretty
good practices as well. So I think you'll see some
of that in the game tomorrow. You'll see some of
the depth there. At linebacker, I'm not really as worried
about that position. And if you think about and go
back and look at some of the defenses that Iberflus

(04:58):
has had over over his time, you know these these
He's got some pretty good linebackers on those teams. And
I think back way way back till twenty fourteen when
he was a linebackers coach and Anthony Hitchins had one
hundred tackles as a rookie. But but like you said,
that defensive tackle spot, if that can get somewhat short up,
I think that they'll stop the run pretty well. And

(05:19):
I think the linebackers will be fine. As for running back,
everyone healthy. I think it's Travante Williams until someone shows
him something different. If if Miles Sanders comes in and
and and shows that he is a little bit more
of a of a complete back, then it'll be him.
If if Jayden Blue does all the things that they do,
all the positive things that they want him to do,
uh where he's he shows this kind of speed and quickness,

(05:42):
he can catch the ball out of the backfield, he's
a willing blocker. You don't have to put people down,
you know, you just have to get in the way
and and make sure that the blitzers don't hit the quarterback.
It's not always fun, you know. Tony Poler didn't wasn't
great at it, but he wasn't terrible. You know, he
wasn't Zeke. But he get in there and he was
not afraid. That's the thing about Tony Pollard. And that's

(06:03):
what I think Jayden Blue are any of these young
backs are going to have to do so the running
back position. You know, it's just we haven't seen anything yet,
so it is what it is. It's kind of more.
You're going off of the money right now. You know,
you're like, all right, the veteran that they paid the
most too is Deravonti Williams. Then they paid a little
bit to Miles Sanders. They're the veterans. They've been here.
Then for that, the highest draft picked would be would

(06:25):
be Jayden Blue and then fil MafA and all that.
But once we get and we'll see what happens tomorrow.
I think Mafa's gonna play well, I really do, you know.
They they're probably gonna have to get another running back
in here. So I know there's been a little bit
of talk and speculation. I don't know if it's if
it's too early to talk about, but it sounds like

(06:45):
they are going to sign another running back, and probably
a running back that you've seen before. So don't be
too surprised and not not zeke Okay, I'm not going there.
Just just pay attention to that. I'm sure that they're
going to be bringing in another back just to help
them in the day standpoint. All right, let's go to
uh Davian in Illinois. Next, Davian, what's a big doll

(07:10):
you hear me? You made it? You made it back.
He was the last one to leave. I saw. I
actually talked to him yesterday of practice. So he looks
like the train and the flight and everything got back
safe and sound in Illinois.

Speaker 8 (07:22):
Yeah, everything went well, man. The train was train was fun.
I had a guy that just wouldn't leave me alone,
let me just begg But it's uh, it was it
was fine. I mean, uh, it was fine. I had
a good time.

Speaker 6 (07:35):
A lot of people mess with you all. I mean,
you're you're man. I don't know why people mess with you.

Speaker 8 (07:42):
It was just without leaving alone. Man, I was Yeah,
it was. It was wild. But yeah, shout after y'all.
Thank y'all for everything I did for us. We uh
we really truly appreciate it. Uh really just I really
had a great time. It's pretty much triple fifteen out
of ten.

Speaker 9 (07:58):
It was.

Speaker 8 (07:59):
It was off the moon, so it was crazy.

Speaker 6 (08:02):
I'm so happy that you guys enjoyed it and it
was worth it because it was a lot of fun
on our end too.

Speaker 8 (08:09):
Yeah. Big shouts after Anthony, I urge you did for
my mom. I really appreciate that. So you're looking at
my guy.

Speaker 1 (08:18):
Uh.

Speaker 8 (08:18):
So let's talk about the team basically. Man, I really
tomorrow I'm looking forward to to see as U Nate Thomas.
I kind of want to see what he gonna be
able to do with live action. I mean we started
the scream as you did for that, okay, but I
kind of want to see more of well of what
he's gonna do. I know he probably't gonna be at
there too long because we him and Rich I think

(08:40):
is a facult right now.

Speaker 6 (08:41):
You know what you know what not not to cut
you off, but he might you know, I mean, he
might be out there longer than you think, because I mean,
he does no reps from last year. He needs to play.
He needs to play. He might get banged up a
little bit. I'm not talking about hurt, but just banged
up and fight through that stuff. I mean, it's been
a Watson's he's played football, So if they really want

(09:02):
to see what he can do, maybe he does get
a little bit more reps than then then you would
think just what the ones would get or what he
would get.

Speaker 8 (09:11):
Yeah, you're right, You're right. I mean I would be
opposed to seeing them out there going because I mean, uh,
between him and Riches, somebody got to step up and
take that spot, which I think he's gonna actually get it.
But uh, Also, I mean I'm looking forward to seeing
I'm hoping that. I was, like we were talking about
wins out there. I think that's probably gonna play second game.

(09:32):
I think he's gonna play this game just for just
because I think he did the scrimmage pretty much the
whole time, So I don't think he's gonna play that.
He's gonna play it all tomorrow. But I'm looking forward
to seeing the play calling because I know he said
he gonna keep the seven iron, and he's just gonna
basically be a vanilla all preseason. So I'm just curious
abou But they gonna vanilla it up tomorrow, how looking?

Speaker 6 (09:51):
Yeah? Yeah, I mean yeah, that's why you're not gonna
see a lot of these stuff like like Turpin for instance.
I'd like to see a little bit more from turping.
You ain't gonna see Turpin out there because I mean,
why would they throw anything that they might be doing
on his you know, with him. So we'll see, we'll
see how it goes.

Speaker 7 (10:10):
You know.

Speaker 6 (10:10):
It's one thing to say, oh, this is what they
have done with Dak, this is what the Cowboys do.
But we are dealing with a new head coach and
a new staff and with new you know, ideas and stuff.
So so maybe Shottenheimery's gonna mix it up. I believe
it when I see it about Dak playing a preseason game.
I mean, it hasn't happened since twenty nineteen. I just

(10:30):
I'm just not expecting that to happen here.

Speaker 8 (10:34):
And then my final thing, because I know we got
people trying to get on the ry receivers. How you
did that? We was gonna play it, I know, we
GP and CD five gonna chill if we don't see Turp, Tober, Mingo,
Tray Sha Holden probably most of the game, you will think.

Speaker 6 (10:49):
I would not expect to see Turpin because like I,
like I alluded to, it is a second ago. I mean,
everything that they're doing with him is kind of he's
kind of the new Wrinkle guy. He's a gadget type player.
Why would you throw any of that stuff out there?
I just don't see the point in playing him not
a returner, you don't need that. And receiver either, So

(11:09):
Turpin I wouldn't imagine him to play, and Tolbert too.
I mean, I think you're gonna see a lot of
Mingo in Flinoy and then some of these other guys
are holding and Josh Kelly Cropper and things like that.

Speaker 8 (11:24):
Well, I'm just curious. Uh you back home in Dallas,
all right, and we don't we don't keep it up
in uh man, Let's get the thing rock.

Speaker 6 (11:34):
And roll, all right, man, appreciate it, Thank you for
the call, Thank you for coming out, Davian. All right,
let's go. Let's keep it going back to Kansas City
where we got I don't I don't know why. But
it seems like every time Brian and Kansas City calls Casey,
Joe also calls so a c Joe, what's up many today?
I'm doing good.

Speaker 10 (11:53):
I owe you an apology. I called you Chris by
accident on the way out because he was saying I
had to rush the other day because he had, you know,
that meeting and thinking about that.

Speaker 6 (12:02):
It's no did your nick I was?

Speaker 10 (12:05):
It was I just made a mistake the other day.

Speaker 6 (12:09):
That wasn't What was funny. What was funny is that
three people in a row did the exact same thing
to the point where I was confused with what my
name was. And I was just gonna roll with it.
You know, at this point of camp, I don't really care,
you know what I mean. As long as you're calling
me something that that we can put on the air
and not and not have to bleep it out, I'm fine.
It doesn't matter.

Speaker 10 (12:29):
Hey, I want to know what kind of special meals
your mom's making for Randy, because I mean, she's making.

Speaker 6 (12:33):
A hungry over here, you know.

Speaker 9 (12:34):
And it sounds like she's a pretty good cook.

Speaker 6 (12:37):
Yeah, she definitely is. And and and her mom was
a really great cook too, And the whole family, and
so they got some great recipes, and yeah, I have
no idea what it is, but I can promise it's
gonna be good. It's gonna be real good. For sure.
It makes me miss it too, So I bet it does.

Speaker 10 (12:53):
I bet it does. What I was thinking about was,
do you think that Toya might take Smith's job or
make him second string and put Toya out there because
he's a little bigger and he's a little more bulkier
on the defensive line.

Speaker 6 (13:06):
I don't think anything's off the table. I really don't.
I mean, there's no this at this point. It's no
more first round pick versus seventh round pick, rookie, third
year guys. Nope, nope. It's who can play. Who's gonna
who is gonna stop that the run and let those
linebackers fly to the football, And if it ends up
being Toya, then it is. I mean that that's what

(13:29):
it was. I mean, Jay Ratliffe was a seventh round
defensive tackle and he took a little bit to get
in there, but once he did, he was the better
option over anyone else, Jason Ferguson or Brooks or I'm
trying to Kenyon Coleman. I'm just going way back, but
I'm just thinking, I don't think it matters when you're
talking about who who can play and who can help me.
I'd be a little surprised, always surprised. If a seventh

(13:51):
round pick is better than your first round pick who's
in his third year, that's surprising, but it's not unheard of.
And if Ja Toya is the best option, then he's
the best opt.

Speaker 10 (14:01):
True and and with and with with the new coaching,
they don't have favorites right now. They're just trying to
figure out who's best for them.

Speaker 6 (14:07):
They shouldn't, yeah, they they shouldn't. I mean everybody has
pet cats and stuff like that. But but I don't
think that they're going to have holdover favorites, you know,
I mean like guys that were drafted a couple of
years ago. This you know, this staff is new, but
everyone does it. I mean, everyone has their guys, especially
the guys that they brought in in this and in
this case, guys that they drafted. I think it's pretty

(14:29):
much a clean slate.

Speaker 2 (14:31):
That's cool.

Speaker 10 (14:32):
Well, I don't have much and other people trying to
get in, so I thank you for taking my call.

Speaker 1 (14:35):
And have a wonderful weekend.

Speaker 6 (14:36):
Thanks man too.

Speaker 10 (14:37):
But what number do we call on when you're back
in Dalla? Do we go back to the other number?
Not the storyline?

Speaker 6 (14:44):
I believe number? I believe, so I'll I'll have that
information for you when we come out of the break.
Christ is on the phone right now. When we come
out of the break, I'll make sure give all the
instructions on that.

Speaker 10 (14:54):
Thanks, be good, because I don't want to call the
wrong number, of.

Speaker 6 (14:56):
Course, of course not all right, bye, all right, see,
all right, So thanks for the call, Casey Joe. A
couple of callers over there from Kansas City, of course.
That's that's where we've seen the most success in the
NFL in the last you know what, eight years, ten years,
I mean, with with that combination of quarterback and head coach,

(15:20):
and that's been the standard. They haven't always won the
Super Bowl, but they've been there a lot, They've been
the championship a lot, and that's kind of where you
want to be. I'm glad we have some cowboy fans though,
still right there in Kansas City, because I guarantee those
fans are hot and heavy about the Chiefs, and rightfully so.
I mean that's that's like I said, that's been the standard.
All right, we'll switch it up here. We got Chris

(15:41):
and Sarato Saratoga Springs. Chris is next. Hey, Nick man,
how you doing?

Speaker 9 (15:50):
Not too bad though, you know, just watching the ponies
as much as.

Speaker 6 (15:55):
How are they running?

Speaker 8 (15:55):
Man?

Speaker 6 (15:56):
They running good?

Speaker 9 (15:57):
Oh, it's outstanding. It's been a eight meet so far
that I'm gonna you know, I'll be there for the
travers on the twenty third of August, which will be fantastic.
Probably be about forty thousand there at the at the track,
so it'll be it'll be pretty fun for sure.

Speaker 6 (16:11):
That's awesome. Sounds like a SuperFect the type of day.

Speaker 4 (16:15):
That's right, that's right.

Speaker 9 (16:18):
A couple of questions. The wide receiver battles for like
the fifth and sixth spot he did, House Flunner. How's
Ryan doing? I mean, he's been real quiet. I haven't
heard much of him. I mean I heard more about
the you know, restrict of free agent holding than Ryan Flunna.

Speaker 6 (16:35):
Yeah, yeah, no, he every time I look up, I
feel like he's making a play nineteen. I'm ILINOI I
mean he he's pretty good. I mean I think he's
having a pretty good camp. I mean, I think he'll
play a lot tomorrow. And that's one thing about Flinoy,
if you remember, sorry, if you remember last year training

(16:56):
camp kind of just okay, you know, and and the
practices and look like a rookie from Southeast Missouri State.
Then the first game, if I remember correctly, I think
he dropped a pass against the Rams and it's okay,
looks like the moment was a little too big for him.
And then the next game was Raiders maybe Vegas scores

(17:17):
a touchdown, had a couple of nice catches. Next game
was against the Chargers at home with Trey Lance playing line.
I think he had another touchdown. So I think with him,
I think when the lights come on, and I think
he's kind of become a little bit of a gamer,
so I wouldn't be down on him. I think that's
gonna be a tough, tough battle between Jalen Brooks and

(17:38):
Flinoy and croppers done okay and you know, and bingo
and then and then they're gonna have to make decision
on what they Maybe maybe they do move on from
somebody that that's a veteran, and maybe they make a
trade there if they're trying to add a position, you know,
and that I mean, it's always scary to me because
you know they're gonna want Tolbert, and I don't know

(17:59):
if I want to part ways with that. You know,
you get an injury at receiver, you certainly wouldn't mind
throwing Tolbert in there as as your starter or your
second guy, or you know, or something like that. So
I don't know, I don't know if that's a depth
I want to mess with, right.

Speaker 9 (18:15):
What about bringing back Malie Davis running back for some depth?

Speaker 2 (18:19):
Is he?

Speaker 9 (18:19):
Is he still out there?

Speaker 6 (18:22):
It's interesting, very a very interesting dilemma there, Chris. I
did say that the Cowboys were probably going to bring
a running back in the back that you've heard of,
So not saying anything, but that's not terrible at all.
That's not a thing. I like what you're thinking there,
you know what I mean. You take that, you take
that mindset and apply it to the to the ponies

(18:44):
that you're betting on, you know what I mean, and
you might have a you might have a good good show.
Not to say that you're betting, I don't know. I'm
just saying you probably just go out there for the
for the fun entertainment. Oh no, no, okay, all right, cool, well, well,
not bad, not bad at all. I think that that
definitely could happen. I think that's probably the route that

(19:06):
they're going to go as far as a running back position. Right,
all right, thanks Chris, appreciate the calls. Welcome, and then
let's see we have time for another call. Let's go
one more before we go to break. Whoa man, it's
been a while, been a minute, Travis san Antonio, what's
up man?

Speaker 5 (19:23):
What is going on?

Speaker 10 (19:24):
How you doing good?

Speaker 6 (19:25):
How are you doing?

Speaker 5 (19:27):
I'm good. I just took a little hiatus. I got
off the Twitter train X whatever you want to call it.
I'm probably gonna get back on there. But it's literally
just gonna be for to keep in contact with the group.
Shout out to all them. I'm glad to see them
make it out there.

Speaker 7 (19:40):
I was supposed to.

Speaker 5 (19:41):
But maybe next year will be my thing. It will
grow the group a little bit. But I am sitting
working in my office in my storyline T shirt and
I have my mug filled with water, so I'm good
to go.

Speaker 6 (19:50):
Nice, nice, nice, that's good.

Speaker 5 (19:52):
But yeah, so I just wanted to call say, the
coverage has been great so far for training camp, all
the lives and everything, but watching all those it's all
been awesome, So shouts everybody, and all the show's been
I've been keeping tabs on it. I've been removed, but still,
you know, keeping tabs. But I wanted to let you know.
I think you're talking kind of about like what are
we looking for tomorrow? The thing I'm looking for most

(20:13):
is we've got and I know Solomon Thomas isn't a
small dude. He's a yoked up dude, but he's a
smaller DT and we've seemed to be kind of going
smaller with the interior line. And I'll be the first
one I tell you, you know, because you know in
the Michigan guy Mazi has not been great and has
definitely not live up to what I thought he was
going to be. At this point, all can change, but

(20:35):
it's not looking great there. I know Toyota had a
rough It sounds like he had a rough scrimmage. So
the thing I want to look at most tomorrow or yeah, tomorrow,
is how Everflus' scheme, because he's been preaching like it's
eleven guys, and I know I just said Mazzi hasn't
been great, But we focus so much on the interior
we can't forget about like when corners don't want to tackle,

(20:56):
like you can't have soft edges like the run defense.
I think is scheme can work, but I want to
see eleven guys, you know, filling hole like run, supporting
like like making sure that they're debating the run as
a unit is what I want to see. So that's
my biggest thing. And I'll let you go and think
of that. But shout out to you and Chris, guys
doing a great job.

Speaker 6 (21:17):
Enjoyed talking to you. I appreciate it. Thank you, Travis.
That's a two time All Storyline Team participant there, and
I hadn't hadn't heard from him this offseason, so I'm
glad to hear from you. Glad that I mean. And
that's what happens a lot too. I mean, you kind
of get you get geared up and take a little break,
especially after the season that the Cowboys had last year.

(21:38):
Frustrations and I don't know all the situation. I'm just
saying that people sometimes you take a little break from it,
you know, But football season is a vicious cycle. We
just keep turning, turning and get back around again, and
here we are and so kind of sucks us all
back in. I'm guilty of it too. It's awesome that
wouldn't want it any other way. You're right about the

(21:59):
defensive time position, especially with Mazzi. He hasn't taken that
step that you wanted him to. You know, you want
the first round pick to come in and be good,
right right, then have a little bit of you know me,
it's probably gonna be a little bit of growing pains,
but by the end of the year, you know you
got something. The next year you take off what you want.
When you're picking like they're in the twenties, is is

(22:20):
I mean, look at what the Tyler Smith trajectory was.
I mean, like pretty good to start. He started at
left tackle. You know, there's gonna be some grown pains
that he had some penalties issues, but he was pretty
good for a rookie playing left tackle. The next year
they moved him back to the guard, where you know,
a little bit more of a natural position makes it

(22:41):
all pro. And then he does it again. That's the
kind of stuff that you're looking for in that kind
of pick. And we just haven't even seen anything close
to that yet, any kind of consistency out of Mazie.
So it's got to happen for sure. All right, let's
let's take a break real quick here on the Cowboys storyline.
I know we have two callers holding, will be right back.

Speaker 6 (24:41):
Yeti officially licensed Yetti Cowboys gears now available at Stadium
pro Shops, Concession and on Yeti dot Com. All right
back here on Cowboys Storyline. Our final show from here
from Aux, our final storyline show. Next week there will
be a couple more shows from out here. I believe Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,

(25:03):
is that right, Chris? And then Wednesday they pack it up.
They'll be leaving on Thursday. We'll have some shows back
at the Star as well. We've had some already, uh
some of the shows from their players lounge, hanging with
the boys. I think Boys Girls Talk Boys Talker has
been back there, and then a cowboy storyline will have
two shows next week as well, I believe, or Tuesday

(25:23):
and Wednesday, if I remember correctly on the schedule. As
for the phone line that I was, I was, I
told you i'd get that information on. Of course I
went through the whole break and forgot to ask Chris.
But going back to the new number, going back to
what we had before, the old the old regular number
will be the one calling you'll be able to call
from there. So uh yeah, back to back to back
to normal. Maybe not next week because I need I

(25:46):
need Chris being there to be normal. Uh So we'll
see what kind of growing pains we have. I think
we'll get through it. But once we get a little
bit closer, then it'll be we'll do. I think it's
gonna be three shows a week, and then before you
know it, we'll be at five a week, which means
pretty much like forty shows for the week for the

(26:06):
entire lineup. And so that's when that's when Chris gets
really really busy. Right now, we're just ramping up, just
like the players are. As you can kind of see
behind a little walk through getting ready for the game
tomorrow against the Rams. All right, let's go to the
phone line with Cowboy Nico in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Nico,
what's up, hey, Nick?

Speaker 1 (26:28):
How you doing a long time no chat?

Speaker 8 (26:30):
Yeah?

Speaker 6 (26:30):
Man, how are you?

Speaker 9 (26:32):
I'm all right.

Speaker 1 (26:33):
I switched careers, so I'm doing all right. I left
law enforcement and now I'm taking out your guys's trash.
It's a big change anyway.

Speaker 6 (26:44):
Yeah, yeah, I.

Speaker 1 (26:47):
Was thinking about something and you've made this comment before,
and I totally spaced. I was at that game. You
have talked about your favorite kickoff return evert mister Woody
Dan's We're jumping down the sideline the hop You've talked
about it, right, we all know it. We also lost
that game, which sucks because here's why it sucked. It

(27:08):
was my eighteenth birthday and all I wanted was the
Cowboys to beat the freaking forty nine ers, which we
didn't do. And I wanted to see EMMITTT Smith score touchdown,
which he did. Happened to be right where I was sitting,
which was cool. Unfortunately for the guy in front of me.
He had just had rotator cuff surgery and I jumped
and screamed as lot as I em it's my guy,

(27:31):
and I knocked his arm.

Speaker 7 (27:33):
So yeah, there's a story for you.

Speaker 1 (27:37):
But the reason I talk about this Woody Dan's alur thing,
and you're right, it was great. But I have a
bold prediction. I believe Cavante Turpin is going to one
up that kickoff.

Speaker 7 (27:50):
Return this year.

Speaker 1 (27:52):
Mark my words. I really believe Turpin's gonna take off,
not just even in special teams, but as we know,
he's doing a lot of stuff out there now. But
I really think this year Turpin Wind's up mister Damsler's
beautiful button.

Speaker 2 (28:09):
I just think it's I think it's kind of cool.

Speaker 1 (28:11):
What do you think I'm at.

Speaker 6 (28:12):
I think that there's no way that you're far that
you're far off from this prediction, because one could argue
he already has. I mean, if and Derek and I
were there for the for the Woody Danceler play, and
we've always said that that's one of the greatest individual
plays of all time, regardless of what happened in the game.
And what kind of season it was and all that.

(28:32):
Just from play to play it was it was outstanding. Well,
where does turping against Washington stand. I mean, we're talking
about a game winning play. It didn't have all of
the elements, but it had the spin move that you
haven't seen since like Madden ninety five Sega Genesis. I mean,
it was unbelievable. And then the speedbird right, I mean

(28:53):
he hit he hit the spin and then like the
R two speedburst for the game winning touchdown. It's hard
to be I'm telling you. As much as I love
the Woody Danceler playing, and I still it's it's up there.
And we're doing a documentary that I'll go into detail
here in a little bit that that includes that play.
But when you're talking about outstanding plays, turping that the

(29:17):
game winner, I mean that that a little sort of.
I mean, it was kind of a weird, what a
weird game, But but for him to make that play
in that moment, man, it's it's up there. It's one
of the best kick returns by far in in Cowboys history,
if not the best.

Speaker 1 (29:33):
So I agree, I agree. I just remember Woody Danswer
brought us back in that game like we were. We
were getting the crap kicked out of us, and then
danswere does that and I thought, oh my god, we're
gonna actually do this. Yeah, and we didn't listen before.

Speaker 9 (29:47):
I let you go.

Speaker 1 (29:49):
First thing to mister Bean, congratulations beating CD and you
do get your name beam Bag. I'm kicking it. I
think it's awesome and I'm looking ordered to see as
a rocker. I really do. But my question I want
you to elaborate on can you elaborate a little bit
more on your feeling with the DBS.

Speaker 9 (30:09):
I know we've been.

Speaker 1 (30:10):
Hearing it's not good. Can you elaborate anymore on Diggs?
I mean, what's going on? Anyways, that's all I got.
Let's get Let's go cowboys.

Speaker 6 (30:20):
All right, thanks man, There's lots unpacked there, I get.
I'm assuming the last show we talked about Chris beam
with the being back in the last show. Okay, yeah,
it was pretty awesome by the way. I mean that
that was great. I got some cool videos and I'll

(30:41):
tell you what though, I'll give I'll give credit down.
Chris beam Is is really really good at at Cornwall.
I mean he's about as good. I haven't seen anyone
really better. But CD. I'll give him credit though. I mean,
he went in there and did a nice job and
he won one of the games. I couldn't believe he won.
So it was like a five game series Chris one
four to one. But I didn't really seen anyone beat him,

(31:05):
and so that that was good and just kind of
goes to show what kind of great athletes these guys are.
But and you know, he's a good I think as
Chris A. He's a really good basketball player. CD is
and so you know, you're talking about having hand eye
coordination and figuring it out and he kind of did.
And then but he's competitive too. Like what's funny is

(31:25):
that it doesn't matter what it is. Brian Schottenheimer's mantra
with we've seen on a T shirt, we've seen on
you know, posters and stuff signs is compete every day.
And that's exactly what happened. Well, he's competing every day.
It was. It was cool. I was, I was. I
was kind of sweating though for Chris a little bit,
because you know, he once once people started watching and

(31:46):
taking videos and pressure was mounting and CD was coming back,
but he did he held his own and he it
was good. It was that was fun to watch. As
for football stuff here, sorry got it off on tangent.
The cornerback was Yeah, that's a problem right now because
and and I did an interview with Stephen Jones and
I asked him, you know, I don't know if you

(32:07):
want to get into any kind of problem areas. You know,
at this point he goes, oh, no, no, I don't
mind doing it. Like you mentioned corner, like, there's no
doubt that the corner, the depth there is a problem
and how could it not be. I mean, there's there's
just as many cornerbacks sitting over there with Britt Brown
rehabbing than there are you know that that are starting
and guys that you expect to play and play well.

(32:30):
I mean, like, I think Elam's done a nice job.
That's been a good surprise of camp. But you know,
Doron Bland's kind of been you know, Doron Bland I
mean he's hasn't been outstanding with a ton of pick sixes,
but he's been solid for sure. After that, there's just
you know, I mean, you've got Kaylen Carson's kind of

(32:53):
been banged up. He was banged up so he's out
right now, you know, then you're looking at who's who's
in the slot. You've got Kemon Hall and Ion Childress
and I mean, but Savone, Revel and Diggs and Josh
Butler are all rehab and so there's a lot. There's
a lot happening there and not enough all at the
same time. I think that that will be a position

(33:15):
that there's no way that the cornerbacks that play against
the Eagles, I don't think there's there's any way that
they're all here. I just I can't see. I can't
see how that's going to be the case. So I
don't know who. I'm not saying that the market is
flooded with great corners, but you gotta do something there,
all right. I alluded to this about Woody Danceler play on.

(33:40):
I know there's been some talk we did our first
deep blue yesterday on the Dirty Dozen. I have not
gotten a chance to see that yet, so I'm anxious
to see that. About the twelve draft picks from the
nineteen seventy five, it's been fifty years since they drafted.
Of course, the draft was a lot bigger than but
twelve draft picks they all made the team the dirty

(34:00):
doesn't and not only that. You know, and rookies can
make the team, but usually that means you're not very good.
That team made the Super Bowl. Uh lost in the
Super Bowl to Pittsburgh, but it was a good, good
team and Randy White was the headliner there, Hollywood Henderson,
some other really good players from that team. So I
know that they've been working some late hours to get
that done. I haven't seen it yet, but I I

(34:22):
can't wait to watch that, and then the and then
the next documentary will be The Wall two point oh
and that that will be on the offensive line with
the main three of Zach Martin, Travis Frederick, Tyron Smith.
They all sat down and talked and I'll tell you
that that's gonna be phenomenal. And then the one that
I'm really working on the most that I that I

(34:42):
helped write the script for is is called Coach Joe.
Simply put Joe Avazano Special Teams coach way more than that,
and we're really getting into who he was as a
as a person, as a coach, as a dad, as
a friend. It's been it's been a lot of fun
to do that, and of course some of the highlights.
You've seeing all these kick returns, and of course I

(35:03):
was his last year the coaching for the Cowboys two
thousand and two, and you know, and of course Woody
Danceler's big play in there. We're seeing some Dion runs
and front backs and it's been it's been a lot
of fun to do that, all right. Sorry, Casey in
La has been holding for a long time, Casey, what's
going on? Man?

Speaker 4 (35:20):
Nick, I've actually been holding since after the draft. Couldn't
get in the few weeks afterwards. So I really need
you to get back to those five shows a week. Yes,
so we could get in because I could ramble.

Speaker 6 (35:30):
For about an hour. I'm sorry, I'm sorry.

Speaker 4 (35:34):
CD and anything that's classic.

Speaker 6 (35:36):
Hey, compete every day, compete every day, and he certainly did.

Speaker 4 (35:42):
I mentioned it coach Joe. Just seeing that wild, crazed
look on the sidelines classic that's gonna be off.

Speaker 6 (35:50):
It's been so fun to go down that road. And
you know, and a lot of people don't know this,
but I actually I went to college with his son, Tony,
and so well I actually covered him when he played
basketball for the team, so I've kind of known him
for a long time. And and we we tell a
story about a game where coach Joe was there and

(36:11):
Troy Aitman showed up at the game, and that was
pretty wild. There probably one of the coolest things ever
happened to our you know, to our school there at
the Missue. But anyways, go ahead, Casey, what do you got?

Speaker 4 (36:23):
You know, everybody said, it's been thirty years, which you have.
But in that time, there's been at least three teams
in my mind that could have got to the super Bowl. Obviously,
the Clayton drop on third down changed that game against
the Giants. In Green Day twenty fourteen, I really felt
like it was the DeMarco fumble early bigger than the
desk kant it even though he did yep.

Speaker 6 (36:44):
And then in.

Speaker 4 (36:45):
Sixteen I think if Romos starting that game, they win it.
But that being said, come back third and twenty give
up the huge play. So it's not like this team
was far from the super Bowl. But that being said,
do you think the black of fear of job security
at the top has become antiquated or GM's need a

(37:10):
little bit of that to make sure they produced kind
of get their teams over the edge, because there's no better.

Speaker 7 (37:17):
Job security than being the Jones.

Speaker 4 (37:19):
So do you being on the inside, don't wonder that
you think that impacts anything on the way because these
guys are running stuff.

Speaker 6 (37:27):
Yeah, I mean I I've heard that that before. And
you know, it comes down to the pressure, you know,
I mean, how do people perform under pressure? Do they
perform better when they're they're in fear, when they're when
you know you I'm sure it goes both ways. I'm
sure there's times where it's like, hey, relax, you're you're good,
You're not going anywhere. Squad and play, you know, And

(37:49):
there's some players that do respond well to that. Some
some respond to I had to. I had to fight
for every single day, every single practice because I thought
I was gonna get cut. And that's what drove me.
I mean, if you heard that story, you're like, wow,
that's awesome. There's other stories and I can name, I
can name Leon let to be another one where he
thought he was gonna get cut. After that he slipped

(38:09):
and fell against Miami and and and and you know,
had a bone bonehead play and Jimmy Johnson said, you're
a great football player, not going anywhere, You're not getting cut.
Just calm down, relax and do what you need to do.
And he had a great career. So everybody responds differently
to that. I can't sit here and say that, Wow,
you know, the reason why they haven't been to a

(38:30):
super Bowl in thirty years is because of job security.
I think it's they haven't been good enough. And why
haven't they been good enough? Are you know? Is it
because they're not getting the right the right players in here,
the right team, the right structure. You know, you can
there's been a lot of things. There's been a lot
of things for that, I you know, for not not

(38:51):
changing the philosophy on draft and free agency. That's that
would be one criticism that I think that I think
is warranted. Not really changing. I mean, you stick to
the draft, most people do. But I think there's been
times where they can kind of, you know, alter the
approach a little bit and we haven't seen that. I

(39:11):
think that would be fair criticism for sure. And you said, yeah,
I mean, look how close they've been. They've been good
enough to get there, they haven't. They haven't gotten there.
I saw a list the other day on you know,
the last time teams have made it to the Super
Bowl and thirty two teams. You know, the Cowboys are
sitting it. I believe fourteenth. So there's been thirteen teams

(39:34):
that have made it to the Super Bowl.

Speaker 2 (39:37):
One.

Speaker 6 (39:37):
I'm sorry, I think it's won the Super Bowl won
the Super Bowl. Thirteen teams have won it before the
you know, the Cowboys have. That's you know, eighteen teams
that that's been further longer than the Cowboys, and some
of them never at all. So no one really says
that that one that they like the stat of, well,
Cowboys the last team in the NFC to make it
to the championship game. And the target's always gonna move,

(40:00):
you know, even if you if you win it, if
you go through Bowl, whatever, the target's always gonna gonna
gonna move. But you know, I don't think it's job security.
I just think they haven't been they haven't been good
enough to get over the hump. They haven't had the
quarterback play that that they get you there. And I'm
talking about to get you over the hump, you've got
to be perfect. And I'm watching some of the early

(40:22):
episodes of this documentary that's gonna come out on Netflix.
I'm getting a chance to see that in a preview.
It's on really it's on the nineties Cowboys. It's it's
the closest thing to the Last Dance that I've seen,
and I think fans are gonna absolutely love it. I've
seen a couple of episodes so far footage that I've
never seen, and I thought I've seen it all. When
it comes to the ninety two season, ninety one eighty

(40:45):
nine all that I thought I had seen it all,
and there's a lot of stuff I have never seen.
So if you're a diehard Cowboy fan they can't get
enough stuffy, I think you're gonna enjoy going down that
that road because there's there's footage that just hasn't really
come out yet, so that that's fun to see. But
you know it, you know, I think really my point
of what I'm trying to say is that I just

(41:05):
think you know that the team, that team right there,
Troy Aikman was just so good and got them over
the top, and they haven't had just that kind of
perfectionate quarterback that you have to have in the playoffs.
That's not a knock on Tony your deck, that's just
they're not Troy Aikman, especially not troying the playoffs, and
there's not many players in the NFL that were that good.

(41:26):
I mean, he doesn't get considered as the top five quarterback,
but playoff quarterback, I don't think there's been that many
players better than him. All right, Dylan in Northport, Florida's next. Good?
How are you gotta be quick? Sorry? Bud? Good good,
Good to see you man, and happy birthday? Happy birthday?
Was it two days ago? Wednesday? Oh?

Speaker 2 (41:48):
Yeah, I appreciate your off the show. Yeah, I'll just.

Speaker 4 (41:54):
Go super quick then do your thing.

Speaker 2 (41:56):
He's running back, he's running backs. I'm super excited at all,
not from the standpoint of that day, like all stars,
but because it's a super competitive position. There's only a
couple of them I think on the team are super
competitive positions and this is one of them. So you know, unfortunately,
you know my guy do this. He's not I don't
think he's wrong for this team. The injury didn't help
him yet. Miles Sanders, who's hurt as well, But really

(42:18):
MafA hasn't super excited. He looks like a pretty a
pretty big louising back out there, and then obviously drew
whenever he's helping Ready to go. He's I think the
most finantic back, and if he as a rookie, it's
it's a lot to ask of him. But if he
can break out and have a really good rookie season,
I think that's the best chance Dallas has success.

Speaker 4 (42:36):
If you look at like a.

Speaker 2 (42:37):
Conversation on foreign ceiling, he probably has a lower four
the Williams, but I think he has a higher ceiling too.
It's got a lound of the ball and uh, you know,
we'll see what he can do. But that's why I'll
be keeping my eye on this Saturday, as well as
the defensive line interior and in these cornerbacks.

Speaker 6 (42:51):
Yeah, no doubt about it. Running back the the tackle, cornerback,
that's where a lot of question marks are. I think
that I think you hit the nail right on the
head there, Dylan. Was so much fun to see you guys,
And also to the fact that you guys organized this
and it started with the spaces there on Twitter, and
the fact that it's kind of led to what it is.

(43:11):
It's just awesome and I appreciate you really for doing that.
All right, Dylan, thank you for the cole. We're going
to take a break one more we got one more caller,
and I think it's one that you guys will enjoy.
We'll be right back after this.

Back to Cowboys storylines. All right, welcome back to the
final few minutes here of this show. We got to
kind of move quickly, which is not easy for this
next caller, but we're gonna try. Robin Vegas, what's up, man.

Speaker 4 (44:40):
How's everything?

Speaker 6 (44:41):
It's good man, good to see you. And I'm glad
you guys were able to make it out and uh so,
I'm glad you got it back safely.

Speaker 4 (44:49):
It was great.

Speaker 13 (44:50):
And you know, I think the coolest thing was you
made us feel welcomed. It was it was like we
we knew each other, we were friends and we met before.

Speaker 7 (45:01):
Yeah, and and.

Speaker 13 (45:03):
You're a man of your word, you know, which is
which was also you know people, Yeah, when you come
into town, we'll get together. We'll do to sit. You
know a lot of times it doesn't happen, but everything
you said was going to happen, it did. And it
was just a great time just hanging out. It was
like like I said, like we.

Speaker 6 (45:19):
Met, yeah, uh you're talking about the thank you. Thank
you for saying that. By the way I want to.
I know you're gonna talk football, but thank you for
saying that. I think my mom's probably this and she'll
she'll be and my dad, they'll be proud to hear
that that you said that, and my wife as well.
So thanks, thank you so much for saying that.

Speaker 13 (45:37):
Absolutely, uh, talking about the team, people always say, oh,
we were good enough to know we weren't. No, and
you need to do it or you don't. I totally
agree with the quarterback play. It has to go to
another level because you're probably going to play against top people.
It's like it's like baseball, you know, it's all about

(45:59):
the pitching in the playoffs, it's not about the home runs.
I think Jimmy was such a huge part of that
because Jimmy was great at evaluating talent and and that's
I think one of the things we're missing. And and
even even in the nineties teams that everybody knows about
how great they were, even Jimmy what the Jimmy said, Hey, listen,

(46:22):
we need we need Charles Harley to get us to
the next level. And I think that's what we haven't
done since then. We have gotten up to the line.

Speaker 8 (46:35):
But so far.

Speaker 13 (46:37):
Jerry hasn't been willing to go full you know, all
tips in the middle of the table, right, you know.
And and to me, this team is good enough. They
just need some pieces.

Speaker 6 (46:49):
You know.

Speaker 13 (46:50):
We'll see what happens in preseason. I watched the Raiders
last night. It was just fun watching football.

Speaker 6 (46:55):
And now you know it's back all right, all right, Rob,
I appreciate it. Man. We got to get moving to
