Speaker 1 (00:03):
The following is a production of Dallas Cowboys dot Com
and the Dallas Cowboys Football Club.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Cowboys.

Speaker 3 (00:12):
This He's Cowboys storyline with Nick Eatman.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
What's up?

Speaker 4 (00:24):
Welcome to Cowboys Storyline. I am Nick Eatman and we
are back here Frisco, Texas, back at the Star. I am,
at least not everybody. A lot of people still there
finishing training camp. And yes, I feel very fortunate to
be one of the early ones to get to comeback.
So I had to first day of school today, had
to take the little ones there and fix a you know,

(00:47):
do a few other things around, try to get a
head start on the rest of the group. But I
know that they're there holding it down an ox now,
Chris Bean being one of them, and he's still working
this show right now and helping. We got paul In
Matt in the back. Both of them are gonna have
a great show. Two people have already talked to them
on the phone. So we're gonna get right to it.
We're not gonna waste so much time. We know that

(01:08):
there was a game. We'll talk about that. I'll throw
my opinion out of what I saw and maybe what
we didn't see. Uh In that game and maybe any
other storylines that we can talk about, because that's what
we do here on Cowboys storyline. All right, Uh, let's
let's start it off. Let's go to Michael and Bowling Green. Michael,
what's up?

Speaker 2 (01:28):
Michael? You there?

Speaker 4 (01:32):
All right, Let's let's move it back. Let's see if
we can we can start. We can go to the
next caller, see if we got we can go to Chuck.
It's Chuck on the line.

Speaker 5 (01:44):
Yes, this is Chuck.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
Hey, Chuck, how you doing? Man?

Speaker 6 (01:48):
Doing good?

Speaker 5 (01:48):
Nick?

Speaker 2 (01:49):
What do you got for me?

Speaker 7 (01:51):
I got, uh, just some want to say some positives
about the game.

Speaker 5 (01:55):
Okay, I didn't hear more negatives than positives, but.

Speaker 4 (02:00):
Yeah, there there there were some. There were some positives,
not a ton, but there were some for sure.

Speaker 8 (02:07):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (02:07):
I like seeing film Offo run the ball yep, and
I saw Mingo.

Speaker 6 (02:12):
Get open a few times.

Speaker 9 (02:13):
And that's some good young guys.

Speaker 7 (02:14):
I'd like to see show some production and let's not
get too caught up into the first preseason game until
everybody kind of let's hit the.

Speaker 8 (02:22):
Brakes a little bit.

Speaker 4 (02:23):
Oh yeah, of course, I mean, uh, you know, it's
it's one of those things where, yeah, I had when
it went back and looked at all the stats. I mean,
the stats say that that when you know, the Cowboys
have had some successful years and did not win the
preseason game, and some of them were a blowout. So
you know, we got to take it for what it

(02:43):
is and really take it for what it's not. And
what it's not is something that matters, uh, to the
to the big scope of things. So but you wanted
to see some better production, but but for the most part,
it really is meaningless.

Speaker 5 (02:55):
And I think, yes, I agree.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
Well, keep going back in Texas.

Speaker 5 (03:03):
Another thing I wanted to say.

Speaker 4 (03:05):
I appreciate it. Well, thank you so much. We'll get
the We'll make sure we get the phone number out here.
I know that we have some confusion of which phone
number to call. I know you got obviously got the
right one. So thank you Chuck for doing that and
and and getting it started here. All right, have a
good one, Okay, all right back here on. Well, we'll

(03:27):
keep talking more about it. I know we're kind of
running through some technical issues here, but we'll get that.
We'll get the phone line for you to see exactly
which one it is. I know I'm getting some some
messages on that it should be eight a A eight
five five to two ninety seven, the one that that's
always been. So I think that's that's what Chuck called.

(03:47):
And we'll see if we can get some more on
the line. Let's go, let's keep talking about the game
and and and the things that he liked, uh, Phil
MafA being one of them. MafA, you know, is a
guy that I've said it many times on here that
I think that that he is going to have a
successful preseason. I thought he ran the ball really well
in the game. He wasn't the lead runner and that

(04:09):
we can talk about that, uh here in a second,
and Elik Davis and and what a whirlwind it was
for him to be signed and then and then play
the very next day and and play well. But I
thought MafA ran it, ran it really well. Uh He's
a strong runner, powerful runner, and I think that giving
him opportunities with better blockers and better defenders, but still

(04:34):
better blockers, I think that would be something that I
that I would love to see. So I do believe
that that MafA did did a nice job there. And
and he mentioned Mingo. Mingo drew a couple of passing
interference penalties that. You know, that's that's good. That's the
start you're getting open. Of course, no one remembers the
play that Mingo actually drew the big pass interference because

(04:58):
of the fifteen yard penalty that CD I am got,
uh for getting run over on the sidelines. What a
weird play that was. And you know, we've just got
done talking about how last season had all these strange
things that happened last season, and uh, we were even
just kind of joking around, like what's it going to be?

Speaker 2 (05:16):
Well?

Speaker 4 (05:16):
CD getting run over by the ref in the first game.
You know, the game is supposed to be keep your
star players out of the action so they don't get hurt.
And what happens, CD probably took the biggest hit of
them all so over although too early to get to
you know, hit the panic button or anything like that.
There's some things you want to see better, see them

(05:37):
do better, and that could happen this week when they
play Baltimore. All right, let's go to Chris and Saratoga Springs,
New York.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
He's next. What's up, Chris?

Speaker 8 (05:47):
It's my birthday today?

Speaker 6 (05:49):
All right?

Speaker 2 (05:49):
Happy birthday?

Speaker 8 (05:51):
Yeah, big five zero today.

Speaker 4 (05:55):
I'm not there. I'll be there soon, but I'm not
there next. I'm not there yet. But yeah, are congrats man.
You don't feel any different, do you?

Speaker 8 (06:02):
No, not at all, not at all. We're in the
Outer Banks right now for a family vacation right now.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
That's great. Yeah, well so I did.

Speaker 8 (06:11):
Uh, I did watch the game a couple A couple
of questions or concerns. Mozzie's got I don't know, that
boy got to step it up. He was getting pushed
around like a rag doll on that defensive line. I
thought the rookie played better than he did. To be honest,
the kid from.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
Was a youth hit.

Speaker 8 (06:29):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I thought he played well. He played
better me. Had a couple of moments where he got
pushed aund a little bit, but he was much better
in my eyes than than Mozzi was. He Mozzi's got
to step it up, like, I don't know what else
to say that on that my other I really liked.
I did call uh Milie Davis getting in their last
show though, I did call him sign that signing. I

(06:51):
called it yeah, yeah, yeah, he looked good.

Speaker 2 (06:54):
What now I said?

Speaker 8 (06:56):
He looked really good from coming off not playing at all,
getting right in there, running hard, I've always liked him,
you know, I'm glad he did well. I'm happy for him.
Even if he doesn't make our team. I think that
will put a good showcase on for another team as well.

Speaker 4 (07:12):
Yeah, it's gonna be interesting to see what all happens
at running back. He's probably I still can't I can't
see a scenario where he makes the team, right unless
unless Jaden Blue just completely took over as the starter
and then made some of the other guys expendable. But
I just don't see that happening. So so yeah, I

(07:33):
don't see that happening because them MafA. I mean, I'd
rather have MafA than Malik Davis. I mean, you know,
as a younger back and so right, but he did
You're right, he did a nice job. Especially, you know,
that was one of the reasons he wasn't the only
available running back, but he was probably the most you know,
available running back that can go in and play in
twenty four hours notice and play well because of the

(07:54):
terminology and the scheme and all that. And he did
give him a lot of credit for doing that.

Speaker 8 (08:00):
And the last bright spot that I saw, uh hold
in Trayshawn. I love the way that kid plays runs route.
He's really I think he's having a good, good camp
for him. I really hope he makes the team.

Speaker 4 (08:12):
Yeah, well he's he he has done a nice job
and he makes some plays here and there. Josh Kelly
number six made some plays as well. Chris, thanks for
the call, appreciating Happy birthday, Happy big big fifty uh.

Speaker 2 (08:24):
Birthday for you. Thank you. Nick all right, I have
a good one.

Speaker 4 (08:28):
Tresha On Holden, Yeah, number number seven not not probably
not going to keep that number. I wouldn't think if
he does make the team, they're gonna they're gonna have
to move him from that assuming Digs will will you know,
be here like like he's expected to be and and
and he should be coming back. I'm not sure if
he'll get off of the pup I'm talking about Diggs.

(08:48):
I'm not sure if he'll be off of the pup
list before the first four weeks. But you know, it'll
it'll be interesting to see how that works, because he's
he is he's starting to turn.

Speaker 2 (08:58):
The corner there.

Speaker 4 (08:58):
I say all that to talk about the other number
seven right now on the roster, tresech On Holden. You know,
and he comes over from Oregon and he's his position
coach is Junior Adams, who was a positioning coach receiver
coach at Oregon, so you know he was able to
to kind of he knows his coach really well, and
the coach knows him and knows, you know, the best
places to put him. You know, top line speed is

(09:20):
going to be the issue if there is one with him.
But you know, some of the best receivers of all
time figured out a way to get open and and
and make plays, and so you don't have to necessarily
be the burner. You have to be a guy that
can get open. Jason Whitten at a different position. Jason
Witten did it for years. He wasn't super fast, he
just figured out how to get open. There's there's Hall

(09:41):
of Fame receivers that are that have done that and
I think that's one thing that Holden is getting better
and better. And we saw the play and you know,
made a nice play, good throw from from Joe Milton,
who I thought had a very up and down game,
but but he hit you know, hit him down the
sideline there and that kind of led to a touchdown
for for Holden. So it'll be interest to see how

(10:02):
he keeps developing. Let's go to Brian in Kansas City. Brian,
what's that Bud?

Speaker 9 (10:07):
Good morning, sir, How.

Speaker 2 (10:08):
Are you great? Happy to be back here in Frisco.

Speaker 9 (10:11):
Yeah, welcome home, man, I'm glad to see you got back.
Okay and everything. He got the kids off the school.

Speaker 4 (10:16):
Okay, kid's got off the school today and they were
ready to roll.

Speaker 2 (10:20):
It was. It was awesome.

Speaker 9 (10:21):
Yeah, that's that's great, man, that's great. Hey, I got
one comment and then I got two roster questions. One
comment is, man, congratulations to Malik Davis. Talk about a
guy who just perseverance and opportunity meets preparedness. Right, that's
a guy he's probably not I agree with you that

(10:43):
he's probably not going to make our team. But boy,
oh boy, did he make a statement for making a
team somewhere.

Speaker 6 (10:49):
Yeah.

Speaker 9 (10:50):
You know, people watch those and especially those preseason games.
He looked like an NFL player playing against college players,
which is pretty much what he was. Yeah, he's an
NFL He's an NFL season guy who was out there
playing with a bunch of people against a bunch of
people who may not make their team.

Speaker 4 (11:09):
Let me let me say this real quick before you
move to another point. He might not make this team,
he might make the practice squad and and and he'll
make someone's practice squad for sure because of the way
the rules are. What he showed was he stays ready
even without a team, he stays ready, and he was
ready to go in there and play. That's exactly what
you want your guy from the practice squad to be.

Speaker 2 (11:31):
There's gonna be.

Speaker 4 (11:31):
An injury on Thursday, injury on Friday, who's gonna run
the ball for us, who's gonna play special teams as well?

Speaker 2 (11:36):
Perfect guy to throw in there.

Speaker 4 (11:38):
So I would be shocked if he's not on this
this practice squad, because you know, you've got some young
backs in MafA and Jayden Blue, and if they get
banged up and can't play, I mean you have a
chance to slide him in, elevate him for a game day.
At least three times. I could see him being, you know,
definitely in that role.

Speaker 9 (11:58):
Absolutely, And that's exactly what I was thinking, is, Wow,
how prepared was that guy to walk in on one
day's notice? And I don't care, and I know he's
playing against lesser competition, but man, he looks like he
was ready and like you're saying, that's all you can
ask for. So my roster questions are this, based on

(12:21):
what you saw, and obviously we have two more games.
What do you think for backup quarterback? Who would you
make the number two right now? Based on what we've
seen so far and might give you an opportunity whether
it's one game or eight games, And maybe that's different answers,
you know, maybe developing somebody on eight games, and for
one game you're putting in Will Greer because you think

(12:43):
he gives you a chance. But for and then my
other one is for the one tech, I'm pretty convinced
Bzzi's not making the team. He's just he's not one
of the five best defensive tackles on the team right now.
So what do my thinking is they have to do something?
Where do you what route do you think they'll take.
Will they go after a veteran free agent like they've

(13:04):
done in the past for years and years and years,
or do you think they'll they'll actually seek out a
trade and get somebody that is a known commodity. And
I'll hang up and listen to your answer man, welcome home.

Speaker 4 (13:17):
Thank you appreciate it. You know they did the same
thing last year at the defensive tackle Leiden training camp
is when they made a trade for Jordan Phillips from
the Giants, I believe at the time, and I thought
he was going to be I thought that was a
good move, and I thought he was going to play more.

(13:39):
And then he had wrist injury. There were some thoughts
that maybe it wasn't as bad as he thought it was.
He didn't think he needed to go to IR and
then he ends up getting cut picked up by the Bills.
Here he is playing a big role for the Bills
in the championship game last year, and you just think, man,
it feels like you could have played here. And and

(14:00):
I hear it all the time. Well it's a different
scheme and all that. But a big football player that
you know, that can clog up the middle and and
and and take up space and push the pile and
and you know, make some plays. I think I think
every scheme could use that guy. So I have a
hard time thinking that he couldn't have fit that scheme.
There was probably more to it than that, But that's

(14:22):
the type of move I still think this team should.

Speaker 2 (14:24):
Make this year.

Speaker 4 (14:27):
You know, figure out a guy that that's been productive,
that is expendable to his team, and maybe throw a
late round draft pick out there, or maybe you've got
a player at a position. I mean, some's got to
give it. Receiver here. This team has a lot of
receivers and good receivers. And so you mentioned the or
the last caller mentioned Tree, Shawn Holden. I mean, a

(14:47):
guy like that, I'm not saying trade him. I'm saying,
if you feel good with what he can do, maybe
you would want to trade a player that's on your
team that that that's you know, a veteran guy that
that can do some stuff. So all right, and then
a backup quarterback position, you know, that's that is what
it is right now. I mean, I you could make

(15:08):
the argument that maybe the backup's not here. They're gonna
give that's one thing we've seen though. They're gonna give
these guys multiple chances to do it. And Joe Milton
is this year's Trey Lance. I mean, he's gonna get
a lot of chances. He was going to play the
whole game if he didn't get hurt. But he did
get hurt, banged up his elbow, and you know, Will

(15:29):
Gear came in and did a nice job. We'll see
if Will Greer is going to get more snaps now
as well. Milton though he's a he's a dynamic runner
as a quarterback, and so that is always a good
thing to have. And he's got a dynamic arm. Is
it always accurate?

Speaker 2 (15:45):
No, it's not.

Speaker 4 (15:46):
And and we've seen that in practice. We saw it
in the game. He's got to work on the touch.
He can fire it in there, but he still has
to figure out how to get the ball up and
over h And that's just playing football. That's just being
out there and do it in the game. And yeah,
you can say but you do it in practice, but
they don't get hit in practice. It's a different thing.

(16:07):
Everybody knows that. The quarterback knows it. You wear in
that red jersey, you're not getting hit. So yeah, you
can stand there and make a throw. But in the
game it's different. And we saw that for him, So
I'm anxious to see what he does then the second
time around.

Speaker 2 (16:21):
All right, phone.

Speaker 4 (16:22):
Lines look open here eight A eight eight fy five

We're officially turning to that, and I'll and I'll get

gradually ramping it up to get to the five days
a week. Want to know, a lot of you guys

(19:19):
are excited for, including this guy. Rob in Vegas is
next Rob?

Speaker 2 (19:23):
What's up? Man?

Speaker 12 (19:25):
Hey?

Speaker 3 (19:25):
Nick?

Speaker 12 (19:25):
How's everything good?

Speaker 2 (19:26):
How are you?

Speaker 12 (19:28):
I'm good.

Speaker 9 (19:29):
You know.

Speaker 12 (19:30):
We're talking about obviously the preseason game. And my takeaway
is I only believe fifty percent of what comes out
of camp. You know, I heard Joe Milton look great.
Uh No, Joe Milton is a project. Like you said,
he's this year's Trey Lance. He can't beat a backup.

(19:51):
You need to back up to hold down the ford.
You know, you could say what you want about Cooper Rush.
But he won games. And that's what you that's all
you you back up to do. If let you know,
Guffer bid dacks out four games, can can I backup
with at least two?

Speaker 8 (20:06):
You know?

Speaker 12 (20:07):
Can he keep me you know, above water? And I
don't think Milton he's not ready. You know, he he
passes the eye test, but that's about it. I was disappointed,
but I was disappointed only because of what I heard
in camp of Donovan Azaraku. All I kept hearing is

(20:29):
he can't be blocked. He can't be blocked, and he
didn't get near the quarterback. And that's and I'm not
saying he didn't play good, but as a fan, I'm watching,
you know, number forty one, and I'm like, okay, let's go.
Didn't get near him. So and that's because of what
I heard during you know, camp. The team doesn't have
much depth. MafA stood out, MafA looked good. But other

(20:54):
than that, none of the nobody really said, you know,
I didn't see anybody say wow that you know that
I looks looks really good. And my biggest disappointment was
in the head coach when I hear culture change and
I hear we're going to do things different and then

(21:14):
we're going to be physical, and you don't run the ball,
you get penalties like crazy. Why didn't you play Booker
the rookie. This guy needs to be on the field.
You should have played. You left tackle way Waterman hasn't
played in a couple of years. I know you're afraid
of injury, but I'm sorry. This is football. These guys

(21:35):
need to play.

Speaker 8 (21:37):
And.

Speaker 12 (21:39):
I just they say, now, maybe maybe this game coming up.
But my one question to you is did you go
to the Netflix party?

Speaker 8 (21:47):
No?

Speaker 2 (21:47):
I was here. No, I didn't go to that. That
was that was last.

Speaker 12 (21:51):
What about Chris?

Speaker 2 (21:52):
I don't think any I don't think.

Speaker 4 (21:54):
I mean, I know we had some people that went,
but no, Chris didn't go and I didn't go either.

Speaker 2 (22:00):
So because that was here, I'm all right, gotcha? Yeah, yeah, okay.

Speaker 4 (22:05):
But I mean I have thanks for the call, rob
Let's we'll keep the lines open. I appreciate that, and
I'll hit on some of the stuff that you talked about.

Speaker 8 (22:12):
Now.

Speaker 4 (22:12):
You did mention the Netflix the show that will air
August nineteenth. I think it's America's team. The Gambler and
his Cowboys is what it's called. And I've got a
chance to preview the whole thing. I haven't seen at all,
but I have previewed about four episodes, maybe five, and

(22:33):
it's good. I mean, it's it's uh, you know, if
you're if you're you know, a diehard cowboy fan and
you're kind of in my age group there, late forties
and fifties, I mean, you remember the nineties. It's really
what it is. It's the last dance. This is the
closest thing to the last Dance. And this is this
is like it's not just on Jerry, it's the nineties Cowboys.

(22:53):
And so there's a lot of footage. I thought, I've
seen just about all of this stuff, and there's a
lot of stuff that I hadn't seen before. They really
really did some digging. They they you know, they got
the stars to talk and good backstories on some of
those guys, and there's a lot of things in there
I'd never.

Speaker 2 (23:11):
Heard of before, you know.

Speaker 4 (23:13):
I mean, to steal one thing, I never knew that
Jimmy Johnson and UH and Troy Aikman's relationship was was
actually like improved because of fish tanks. Because Jimmy loved
aquariums and he helped Troy set up his aquarium in
his house and would just come over there and watch

(23:33):
the fish. And so I never knew that story, you know,
And then that's kind of cool, but because I knew
there was some friction there early on, uh, in that relationship,
and Jimmy was just hard on a lot of the players,
including the quarterback. But anyways, but no, I didn't, it
wasn't there, but I heard it was a good time.
And obviously, uh, that'll be coming out here next week.

(23:56):
As for the stuff Rob was talking about with the depth, yeah,
that's lack of up. There's a huge issue. And then
as aaku thing is like it's like anything you see
in practice. If he's like, well he can't be blocked,
he can't be blocked, well is he? Is he a badass?
Or do you not have any offensive tackles that can
block this rookie? And that might be where we are

(24:16):
here because the Rams you know, didn't seem to have
a problem with him, and he's had some success. So
it kind of goes back to well, okay, you know,
it's just like with any coach you see, is if
the offense is doing well, maybe they're good. Maybe the
defense has the problem, and so you want that balance.
But again, it's too early for me to to you know,

(24:36):
point any fingers about what shot Schottenheimer did, didn't do,
and who played who didn't play. That there's a method
to all of this, and let's see what happens. No
one's gonna worry about what happens in this first preseason
game or really any of the preseason games. The goals
to get your team ready to play the Eagles. I mean,
that's that's that's it. Number one first and foremost, so
does Tyler Booker need to play more to get ready

(24:58):
for the Eagles? You can argue that he's also a starter.
He is a starter, there's no doubt about it. And
as Iraku played, I said this on the mailbag answer yes,
or as Iroku played. But look at your pass rushers.
It's gonna be Micah, We think it will be Micah.
It'll be obviously a Fowler, Sam Williams, Neelan Peyton, Turner,

(25:19):
maybe also as Iraku. That's where he stands. And so
that being said, yeah, go out there and play. We
need you to play. Let's look at the guards. Tyler Smith,
Tyler Booker, that's it. So he's your starter, and there's
really there's not a lot of options there other than that.
I mean, yeah, you have some Hoffman and Bass and
all that, but Booker's your guy. So I could see

(25:42):
why they did that. And but I think he needs
to play this game. I mean, he definitely needs to
play some snaps. He doesn't need to have his last
game be at Alabama and you know, in a bowl
game where if he probably didn't even play, I probably
was the Iron Bowl, and then fast forward what nine
to ten months to play this game. Now he needs
to play a little bit. So I agree with you there,
but I'm not I'm not to the point of saying,

(26:02):
you know, that was a bad decision. Here, we'll see
this is there's a method to it. Let's go to
Michael and Bowling Green is for our next caller.

Speaker 6 (26:08):
Hey man, how you doing? I heard this is the
only NFL radio show out of all thirty two teams
that you can call in and talk to the best
sports writer in the entire NFL.

Speaker 2 (26:26):
Okay, wow, all right, you just I mean award, what
do I send the check to?

Speaker 6 (26:33):
Wasn't that the award? You just got best sports writer
in the NFL?

Speaker 2 (26:37):
Not in the NFL.

Speaker 4 (26:38):
Not in No, it did not say the NFL nowhere
close to that. Thank you though for saying that, you
know what details details, Yeah, lone Star Conference, the NFL.

Speaker 2 (26:51):
It doesn't matter something like that.

Speaker 4 (26:52):
All right, What do you got man?

Speaker 6 (26:57):
I just.

Speaker 13 (26:58):
I want to know what you're is on this.

Speaker 6 (27:01):
I have heard that that Shoddy is running this training
camp and everything.

Speaker 13 (27:11):
Very very physical, something we hadn't seen in a while.
This much physical.

Speaker 6 (27:18):
How much do you think that's going to help once
a regular season starts to you know, because in past
years it seems like the Cowboys it took him a
little bit to get going, and.

Speaker 13 (27:30):
It just seems like he's maybe trying to get him
going now. What just what's your opinion on that?

Speaker 2 (27:37):
Well?

Speaker 4 (27:38):
I think you could there'd be people that would argue
that because if they was really trying to get them
going now, they would play a little bit more in
the preseason or play play at all, you know, because
you see some other teams that are doing it that way.

Speaker 6 (27:50):
I don't.

Speaker 2 (27:51):
I don't see it being overly physical, not really.

Speaker 4 (27:55):
I mean all they say and yell you hear it
at every practice thirty times fifty times stay up stay up,
Stay up. I mean they make a huge emphasis on
making sure no one gets hit, no one goes to
the ground, So I can't say that I think it's
any different as far as being physical. Now, seen some injuries,

(28:16):
a little bit more injuries than we're used to seeing,
especially early in camp. But I think if he was
going to make a big statement there, they would play
the guys a little bit more in the preseason. Maybe
they will this week, I still doubt it. I haven't
seen Dak play preseason game since twenty nineteen. I don't
think it changes this week, but that would be one

(28:37):
way to say they're taking a stance on, you know,
trying to kind of push this along further. But if
they don't do that, then I can't sit here and
tell you that I think it's been vastly different at all.

Speaker 6 (28:51):
Okay, that's why I know you're inside, so well that's
why i'm asking just to you know.

Speaker 4 (28:58):
Well, yeah, I know what you're saying, and I you know,
it's still we still got what three four weeks to
go before the first game, so you know, he's got
he's got a plan in place here, and I'll be curious,
they're really curious to see who plays this game against Baltimore,
because I not only do I think it's the second game,

(29:20):
I think it's one that they need to play, but
especially if Baltimore is going to play some guys. You know,
if they're gonna play some guys, what a great test
this would be because they they have been the standard.
They're probably one of the most consistent teams in the
last decade along with the Chiefs of being there and
being pretty good every year.

Speaker 6 (29:39):
Yeah, wait, we need to have a whole show on
this Cowboys Jerry Jones show.

Speaker 2 (29:45):
Yeah, well, there will be.

Speaker 4 (29:48):
There will be a document I mean, there will be
some podcasts on that. I don't I don't believe I
will be involved in him, but I do think I
know that they're already They're already setting up some some
people to come in and and and talk about it
and talk about that era in the nineties and guys
that lived it.

Speaker 2 (30:03):
So, yeah, there will be a podcast on.

Speaker 4 (30:06):
It won't be this one, but we could talk about
it of course that you guys call in and give
your opinions on things like that. Uh, because I think
it's been it's been fascinating to watch so far. But
there will be a dedicated podcast, uh with with some
guests on it that you've you've heard of before. They
got some big names, some heavy hitters on that one.
So let's stay tuned for that, all right, Michael, thank

(30:29):
you for the call, Thanks for calling back. I know
you called earlier. Thanks for calling back. All right, Hey yeah,
let's let's uh, let's keep it rolling here. Let's go
from one caller to the next. How about start to
Sue in Fort Worth?

Speaker 5 (30:42):
What's going on, brother?

Speaker 2 (30:43):
How are you doing?

Speaker 5 (30:45):
I'm doing well, man, I'm doing well.

Speaker 7 (30:46):
Just at work.

Speaker 5 (30:47):
Then you know, back to the regular life. Kind of
kind of different from being over there, you know, of course,
of course, Hey man, So I've been trying to get
into you know, the pretty much the whole show, and
then I was on a whole for a wile. So
I apologize if I've touched on something that's been touched on.
But I know I heard the coach Shott he's a
you know, press conference, and he basically talked about how
he needs to learn Milton. He doesn't feel like he

(31:09):
needs to learn Dak. He doesn't really feel like he
needs to learn Will, but he feels like he still
needs to learn Milton. And I guess my question to
you is, I'll be quick. I guess my question to
you is, at what point, as a coaching staff do
you say, like, I also need to learn, you know, Illinoy,
I also need to learn Brooks and Kelly and Mingo
and these guys. And and I feel like right now,
at least from what I observed week one, I'm sorry,
preseason week one, I don't feel like they really got

(31:31):
an opportunity to be learned, you know, to be seen,
just because of quarterback play. And I mean, obviously he
missed some some throws and there's probably some throws that
he could have made that he didn't trust his eyes
on or whatever. And I know that they're going to
develop him, But at what point, at any if any point,
do they say, like, hey, Milton, we love you man.
You're gonna be here, You're gonna be a number two regardless,
but we got to get some we got to get

(31:52):
some good looks for these wide receivers. So we'll let
will go you. I mean, if you've already touched on that,
I apologize, but that's just something that I wanted to
get in get in on it. And and wonder because,
like I said, I do feel like Milton's going to
be too regardless. But but you know, at a certain point,
you have a responsibility as the coaches have to evaluate
these wide receivers. And that's something that I touched on,
you know, whenever I was on the show with you.
In case you haven't seen it, you guys, go.

Speaker 12 (32:13):
Check it out.

Speaker 5 (32:13):
But yeah, man, I just wanted to see what you
thought about that.

Speaker 2 (32:16):
That's I appreciate the call.

Speaker 9 (32:18):
Man.

Speaker 4 (32:18):
It's good to meet you last week in Oxnard, and
I know that you you had some good opinions there. Yes,
thank you appreciate it. You know, he's also a look
alike for The Rock or Dwayne Johnson back in the day.
So anyways that that's not a bad thing.

Speaker 2 (32:38):
But I like what.

Speaker 4 (32:39):
He's what you're saying there, except for one thing, like
you said, the idea of hey, Milton, we like you,
but we've got to evaluate the receivers too, So we're
going to put Greer in so we can evaluate the receivers.
I don't have a problem with that. If I will,

(33:00):
and I'm somebody you know, it's like, wait a second,
so you're saying that I'm the better person to give
these receivers a better evaluation. It means I'm throwing a
better pass to them. Hello, Like, why am I.

Speaker 2 (33:13):
Not the number two quarterback?

Speaker 6 (33:14):
You know?

Speaker 4 (33:15):
And and I think you know, you could argue that
of well, we're gonna keep developing, developing because because there's
a lot more you know, there's there's a lot more
room for for Joe Milton to to really grow. And
then so I see that too. But I think if
it's a night and day difference where where Will Greer
is a better option, then I think we need to

(33:37):
look at maybe who the backup quarterback should be. I
think Milton's gonna play again. I think they're gonna give
him a lot more. I mean, He's gonna play a
lot more of this game, maybe even all of it.
I think that's that's the plan, is keep throwing him
out there, keep throwing him out there. He needs more reps,
needs more reps. And I think that's what we'll probably see.
So all right, let's take our break here on another

(33:58):
break here on Cowboys storyline will be right back after.

the Cowboys Storyline one. Hopefully everybody's gotten there's the ones
that made the all storyline team and next year's team.
I mean, people are already talking about. I get the

(35:32):
calls coming and going. I'm gonna be on it this year.
I got to keep my spot. And I'll say this,
if you made it out to ox start, if you
were one of those that made it, I mean, it's
gonna be hard not to be on the team. I
can tell you that right there. I get to you know,
I pick whoever I want on there. And if you
if you go out there, it doesn't matter if you
call a lot, don't call it all. You probably got

(35:53):
self a spot there because what a commitment that was,
and it was it was a great time and it
sounds like it went well for everybody. One of those
people who organized it is on the line. So we'll
go with her next. Irene falls Church, Virginia.

Speaker 13 (36:07):
Hey, Nick, cal are you I'm good?

Speaker 2 (36:09):
How are you doing good?

Speaker 8 (36:11):
Good?

Speaker 14 (36:12):
I'm gonna echo everybody who called in who was on
the trip. Thank you so much, Human Beam and Tommy
and Kyle hanging out. I mean honestly didn't expect as much.
I know you were talking about the show, but you know,
that first night, I was like, man, he's here, He's
gonna be here like half an hour in peace out
and the show's not gonna work out. And I'm a
little on the anxious side, I guess so, which makes

(36:34):
me a good planner. But but man, I was really
impressed that you not only did what you said you
were gonna do, but just I feel like so much more.
You know, you spent a lot of time with us.

Speaker 5 (36:45):
You didn't have to do that.

Speaker 7 (36:47):
Please.

Speaker 14 (36:47):
I hope you do that in.

Speaker 7 (36:48):
The future too.

Speaker 13 (36:48):
But that was really cool.

Speaker 2 (36:51):
It was fun. I mean it really was fun.

Speaker 4 (36:52):
And I hope you guys know that that you know,
the appreciation that we have for this particular fan base
that kind of great.

Speaker 2 (37:00):
This show.

Speaker 4 (37:00):
The show doesn't happen without without you guys. And and
I say it all the time, and I meet it
and and and so it was a lot of fun
to kind of you know, hang you know, hang out
for that day. And hopefully next year y'all get to
do it again, and maybe more people will come and
and that should be a lot of fun.

Speaker 14 (37:16):
Yeah, that'll be cool. We might need two houses next year.

Speaker 2 (37:18):
We might need.

Speaker 13 (37:21):
There.

Speaker 14 (37:21):
We go, okay, So a couple a couple of things.
I just heard your call talking about Milton. Yep, my guy,
I said on I said on our little you know,
road trip show that he throws a pretty ball and
I still believe his spiral is beautiful. But while he
looked like he was playing darts out there, I was like, okay, okay, man,
what are we doing here? Yeah, but hopefully, hopefully he'll

(37:43):
settle down a bit and we'll see a little more
from him, because you know he he does. He's raw, clearly,
but he he has talent. So we'll see from from
practice before the game. Because we didn't get to see
Dak or pickings. I just noticed he really really trusts
pickings tighter windows than I feel like i've seen him throw,

(38:06):
even to CD. Doesn't mean he's thrown a CD two,
doesn't mean that he's you know, CD's on the chopping block.
But he really trusts I guess the catch radius and
hands for picking. So that's nice to know that we
don't we'll have you know, another escape route. And of
course he loves Fergie. So between the three of them,
if the line can hold up.

Speaker 5 (38:26):
You know, we'll see.

Speaker 14 (38:28):
My one question for you, looking at both practice and
the game, trying to figure out if this is a
camp body thing or if this guy has a chance
of actually making the roster, not necessarily as really a
wide receiver, but as a special teams guy. Josh Kelly
got a lot more playing time in practice and in

(38:50):
the game. Then, I mean, the game makes more sense
because they didn't play starters. But I don't know, it
just seems like there might be something their special teams west,
So I'll take that off there.

Speaker 2 (39:00):
Thanks again, Thanks, I re appreciate that.

Speaker 4 (39:03):
A lot of good good talk there about the receivers.
And yes, I think Pickens is a is a guy
that that Dak trusts to throw the ball to because
he he does have that large catch radius. Like you said,
he uh, he makes plays on the ball and and
he's one that you know, he's a he's a he's
a bad ball catcher. And and I'm not saying Dak

(39:25):
throws out. I'm saying just look at his career at
Pittsburgh and all that. I mean, he's a guy that
makes these crazy catches. And when you do that, it's
because the ball is not always there and you and
you have to adjust your body and all that, and
he does. He does a really good job of doing that.
You know, he had to catch his rookie year that
people at least debated that it was in the it

(39:46):
was in the category of the Odell catch against the Cowboys.
I don't know if I'll go there, mainly because the
Odell's catch was a forty five yard bomb and the
ball's coming down and he still caught it like he.

Speaker 2 (40:00):
You know, with that much force of the ball.

Speaker 4 (40:02):
That pass wasn't as far, but it was still an
unbelievable catch. I think they were playing Cleveland, maybe Cincinnati,
one of those two, but he really made an outstanding catch.
But yeah, I think when you make plays like that
and you're you know, you're not afraid to throw it
in tight coverage because you think your guy's gonna get
it and if he doesn't, at least probably knock it
down so that you know he's gonna fight for the football.

(40:24):
And I think he shows that. As for Josh Kelly,
and he made a couple of nice plays. He's made
some plays at training camp. Him and Holden are kind
of right there and you know that might be a
practice squad type of thing. I don't know if he's
done enough to actually make the team, but we'll see.
And again, some there's a lot of guys ahead of
them that have played a lot of football. You know

(40:45):
Turpen's going to be on the team. We know that
will probably be your third receiver as far as options go.
I don't think he's wide receiver three, but I think
he stays in that third receiver role. And if somebody
were to get hurt, one of the top two guys
knock on Wood, But like I think Tolbert or a
Mingo would probably go in and start. And I think
Tolbert just keeps that I'm sorry, Tolbert, Turpin just keeps

(41:07):
that same spot there. But you guys that were on
the practice squad last year, are you know, Jalen Cropper
and and also Harmon Kevin Harmon. Harmon has been released,
Cropper still there, but they've they've been on the practice
squad for a year or so. So that's that's where
you kind of would see the development of holding and
maybe and or Josh Kelly if that if that's where

(41:28):
they can make it, Let's go to Dylan in Northport, Florida.

Speaker 1 (41:32):
Hey, that's gone good.

Speaker 2 (41:33):
How are you doing?

Speaker 7 (41:35):
I'm good man.

Speaker 1 (41:35):
I think Michael's fighting for one of those captain spots
with all that praise he's given.

Speaker 4 (41:38):
You, He's yeah, he's working it, you know what I mean.
I mean, we take bribes, we take gifts, we take
you know, we take all that stuff. Then again, I
also take planning trips to go out for a whole group,
to go out there and spend your money. That's pretty good.
You know that it's gonna be hard to knock knock
any of the captains off. But then again, you know,

(41:59):
just like any game, if I want to send all
the captains out there for the coin toss, you know,
might send ten guys out there, Mason one.

Speaker 2 (42:07):
We'll see.

Speaker 1 (42:08):
Yeah, I was up against the cloth last week, so
I didn't get to thank you for the good time
out there. Honestly, shout out Tyrene, because I'm kind of
an idea this guy. I'm like, that sounds like a
good idea, but I'm not a planner. Like I don't
get in the nitty gritty a lot of times, and like, yeah,
just let me know how much I got to pay
where I got to be and like, I'm good and
you know, thank God for Irene because without her, none
of this would have happened. So shout out Tyrene for sure.

Speaker 2 (42:29):
Yeah yeah, well.

Speaker 12 (42:33):
Yeah yeah.

Speaker 1 (42:33):
And it was fun out there, man. I really appreciate
you know, the VIP tickets and you know, hanging out
the bars and stuff. That was a really great time.
And Tommy's a funny guy, man, you know, he's he's
kind of a you know, a little whole home on
the show over there, but man, in person, he's a
he's a hoop. I like Tommy a lot.

Speaker 7 (42:48):
He's funny, dude.

Speaker 4 (42:49):
Well you also got to remember what time and what
time of day, and maybe Weddy was holding you know,
in his hand while he was Now I was kidding,
he's he's barely old.

Speaker 2 (42:58):
Enough to drink, you know what I mean. I don't
think he's getting now.

Speaker 4 (43:00):
He's he is a funny guy, and he's he's a
he's a great addition to our team. And you know,
he came out he had a lot of fun. So
did Kyle as well, at least that first night.

Speaker 2 (43:10):
So yeah, yeah, but I'm glad that.

Speaker 4 (43:13):
The more of the team could you know, you guys
could see you know, all you guys, and you guys
are a fan of Storyline, there's no doubt about it.
But you listen to all the other shows, you know
all the other people too, so it was.

Speaker 2 (43:22):
Cool to see that.

Speaker 1 (43:23):
Well, I try to help out wherever I can to.
I know, I'm one of the guys on your show here,
but you know, Kyle was doing something with the pregame
last year and stuff with that on our storyline page
and sent a couple of videos, And I try to
help you guys out on any of any of the
podcasts wherever I can as a fan. So I messaged
him a little bit and it was good to meet
him in person. But yeahs as far as the team goes, man,
there's some negative to talk about from this last game,

(43:43):
especially like the defensive tackle position, but just to keep
a positive building on the receivers. You know, it's crazy
how this thing went from kind of panic mode just
a couple of months ago, like who's going to step
up at wide receiver?

Speaker 6 (43:54):
Two?

Speaker 1 (43:54):
We're kind of screwed there too, you know, with that
trade for Pickens, it's like one and two are are
locked in.

Speaker 2 (43:59):
Man, they're big.

Speaker 1 (44:00):
Time players, and now it's like all the way down
to water receiver six is what you got to figure out.
So my feeling is it's gonna be Brooks because he
brings you some special team value, like as a punk
gunner or yeah gunner on the puntment turn team. But
you know, craftfer can make a play. I really like Holding,
and I think that if somebody does get cut and
is at risk of being signed elsewhere, it might be Holding,

(44:22):
just because I think he has the best traits of
all those wide receiver six guys. He's not fast, but
he's can make contested catches on balls. He's a good
rout runner. I think he's got a bright future ahead
of him. So he's the guy I'm nervous about losing.
But you know, looking looking forward to these next couple
of games, I'm really looking forward to seeing who steps
up at that wide receiver six spot and claims it
for their own.

Speaker 2 (44:40):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (44:41):
It's actually a fascinating position battle. And that's one that
I wish there was more of those type of you know,
depth situations around the roster because there is a lot
of good, good options at wide receiver in one where
you know something's got to give and maybe there'll be
an injury.

Speaker 2 (44:58):
Hope not.

Speaker 4 (44:59):
But but I think there's a trade opportunity there if
the Cowboys want to get another position, receiver might be
where they have to go.

Speaker 2 (45:07):
So yeah, yeah, it'll be fun, be fun to watch
that one.

Speaker 13 (45:10):
Well.

Speaker 1 (45:10):
I'm looking to see too if they'll make a trade
for defensive tackle because that's a position of dire and
you I don't know if if people are talking about
Tolbert being traded. I don't know if there's enough interest
out there for Tolbert or not, or if the Cowboys
are interested moving on from them. But that's a position
specifically I'm looking at, like, man, we need help other
free agent there? Yeah, trade but with us that brother,
I'll catch you later.

Speaker 2 (45:27):
Thanks.

Speaker 4 (45:27):
Thanks, appreciate the call, Dylan. I'm always good to hear
from him. One of the captains on our storyline team
and one of the reasons they put that storyline spaces
together on Twitter and the whole group went out to California.
All right, Mike in England is next, Birmingham, England. Mike
gooill be our last caller. What's up?

Speaker 9 (45:47):
Oh?

Speaker 7 (45:47):
Well, on how about Nick? How are you doing?

Speaker 2 (45:49):
I'm good? How are you all right?

Speaker 6 (45:51):
Thank you?

Speaker 7 (45:52):
Yeah, we're having a bit of a Texas day over here.
Is is it thirty three degrees? What's that like ninety
in American something like that? So we're not used to that,
we don't, we don't hope. Well, so as I'm laughed,
I'll I'll just go quick with my question. It's about
the RB room. So apologies if I'm treading on the

(46:13):
grounds you've covered, But oka of all of all the positions,
the running back position to me seems to be the
least kind of set where every roster spot still seems
to me to be up to grab. So I sor
my question is is there anyone who you think is
you know, assured of their space at RB and is
there still a chance for everyone else? I thought Matha

(46:35):
looks pretty good. I think it looks tough for Douce now, sorry, Dylan.
Is Javonte Williams assured? Is he kind of RB one
or is it all kind of completely open? What's your thoughts?

Speaker 4 (46:48):
That is a very good point, and I agree with
you on that, and it doesn't mean it's you know,
it's a great problem to have.

Speaker 2 (46:55):
It's really not.

Speaker 4 (46:57):
But I do believe that the only guy that I
think Okay, for sure, one hundred percent you're on the team.

Speaker 2 (47:02):
Is Jayden Blue?

Speaker 4 (47:03):
I just I just think even as a fifth round pick,
the fifth round picks don't always make the team.

Speaker 2 (47:08):
But he's gonna make it. He's gonna make it.

Speaker 4 (47:11):
He's quick, he's super fast, he catches the ball, and
he has the potential to be a really good player
for your team. He's making the team. Other than that,
I mean nothing is open. I mean I mean, I
mean it's all open and nothing is secured. I would
think Javonte Williams is making the team. It's not a
lot of money that he's that. He's making three million

(47:33):
or so, and he's done a nice job. He hasn't
played in a game, but I think he's gonna make it.
Miles Sanders, I'm not sure. You know, he got banged up.
I don't know if they keep both those guys. I
think what happens with Phil MafA is going to affect
keeping two veterans. If MafA doesn't really turn that corner,
then I think he keeps the two veterans, He keep

(47:53):
Blue and maybe MafA could be practice squad or a
fourth guy. But if if MafA does turn the corner
with Blue. Then I think I think you only keep
one of the veterans right now. I think Javonte Williams
would be in the lead. So that's how I see
that position. All right, you got anything else? We're about
to wrap this show up.

Speaker 7 (48:13):
Yeah, no, that's all.

Speaker 8 (48:14):
Just say.

Speaker 7 (48:15):
It was brilliant to see the guys on the show
last week, was it?

Speaker 6 (48:19):
You know?

Speaker 7 (48:19):
I felt strangely emotional seeing everyone there, So it was
it was just really nice to see you all getting
together out there. So well done for putting that on.

Speaker 4 (48:27):
All right, Well, think I know that a lot of
you guys had never really seen who what do they
look like?

Speaker 2 (48:31):
What are these you know?

Speaker 4 (48:32):
We see these faces and so it was really cool
to do. And and once they got on there and
started talking, it's like, yeah, that I've seen you know,
I've heard that before. So it was rude, familiar. I
thought the show went really well and it wasn't organized
at all planned. I could have done a better job,
but I don't think you can really tell.

Speaker 2 (48:49):
We just we It was seamless.

Speaker 4 (48:50):
We did a really nice job with it. And and
they they they shined, you know, they get them on
the stage, doesn't matter for on the phone or on
the set.

Speaker 2 (48:57):
They were great. So it was a lot of fun.

Speaker 7 (49:00):
All right, Yeah, I thought I thought it went really well.
And when I saw that it was only twenty nine
minutes long, I thought that Rob must not have been
on it. But you know, nice one, Robin letting everyone
else have their have their moments. So yeah, really good
job everyone.

Speaker 4 (49:14):
Yeah, all right, thanks Mike, Yeah Rob, Rob, can you
share the ball? I mean he he did? You know, nobody,
nobody kind of overpowered it there.

Speaker 2 (49:21):
That was a lot of fun.

Speaker 4 (49:22):
All right, thank you for the call, and that'll that'll
wrap us up for all of the calls here today.
A lot of a lot of good work. I know,
there's you know, everyone wants has their opinion about the game,
but still a little early to to to kind of
figure out exactly what we saw and what it means.

Speaker 2 (49:40):
That's the biggest thing. What does it mean?

Speaker 4 (49:41):
What does it mean to the games that really count?
And I don't know if it means a lot, but you,
like anything, you wanted them to play better, and I
think they're hoping for a better showing of course against
Baltimore this week coming up. All right, that will do
it for the calls. We got Chris Beam still in
the back, I mean still back in California, and he's

(50:02):
doing a great job there helping communicate with me. And
in the back here Paul and Matt really really awesome job.
Thanks guys. I know, we gotta get out of here,
get to lunch, so we gotta cut this thing off,
but we're gonna be back tomorrow. We're doing this thing
tomorrow again, same time at twelve o'clock Central time, ten
o'clock out Pacific. We'll be doing it again. So for

(50:25):
Chris and Paul and Matt, I'm Nick even. We'll see
you next time on Cowboys Storyline.

Speaker 10 (50:30):
This has been a production of Dallascowboys dot Com and
