Now your host, Nicole Hutchison.
Speaker 4 (00:33):
Good morning, Cowboys Nation. Welcome in to Girls Dog Boys
Talk presented by Invisi Line, live from Oxnard, California. I'm
your host, Nicole had just sent alongside Rihanna Aldridge and
Christy Scales.
Speaker 5 (00:44):
We got a preseason.
Speaker 4 (00:45):
Game coming up in less than twenty four hours.
Speaker 5 (00:48):
We're gonna talk about that in.
Speaker 4 (00:49):
Just a few but got a lot of injuries. No
updates just yet, but a couple of guys going down
in practice yesterday. Had Jake Ferguson who was walked off
the field, Dakota Shepley as well Jaden Blue, who was
expected to have a big time preseason game. Again, like
I said, no updates just yet, but just thoughts on
(01:11):
those guys and just how kind of detrimental is that
for a guy like Jaden Blue who was expected to
have such a good preseason.
Speaker 6 (01:18):
Yeah, that's with an ankle injury. And he did walk
back out on the field and street closed later and
watch the end of practice. But he was going to
be one of the guys that I was really looking
forward to see and I think we all were looking
forward to that tomorrow.
Speaker 5 (01:33):
But probably won't.
Speaker 6 (01:35):
Play even if it's not too serious. I mean, why
take a chance on playing him in a preseason opener
less than forty eight hours after an injury. So that
means a lot of film offa But the good news
from the running back standpoint is that after missing nearly
two weeks or actually a full two weeks really, Deuce
Vaughn was back on the field practicing yesterday.
Speaker 7 (01:57):
It was a padded practice.
Speaker 6 (01:59):
He had missed time with a hamstring and so he
was your leading rusher. Actually it was Trey Lance in
preseason last year, your quarterback, but other than the backup quarterback,
Deuce was your leading rusher in preseason last year among
the running backs. So at least from a running back standpoint,
he can pick up some of the slack we would
(02:20):
thank tomorrow.
Speaker 8 (02:21):
Yeah, a lot of question marks coming into camp with
the running back room, So you hate to see Jayden
Blue the rookie go down like that, it was like a.
Speaker 5 (02:27):
Pin drop him.
Speaker 8 (02:28):
And then moments later shepley Ferguson all these things, but
obviously Ferguson isn't someone who's going to play in a
preseason game. And then him putting his helmet on. I
kind of saw him shaking off the trainers and stood
on the remainder of the sideline. That was promising, but
it was very scary watching Blue getting carted to the
medical tent. But then when I saw him, even though
(02:49):
he walked off of practice, walk off on his own,
I think that's a good sign anytime. So, like he said,
it's the ankle. Doesn't seem like we'll see him in
the preseason. There's nothing to give there. But it's a
room where Miles Sanders has already been out, so we
know that was some competition. Javonte Williams been, you know,
RB one for most of the time. Probably won't see
too much of him. I wouldn't want my number one
(03:11):
back out there. When you have Phil MafA, you're still
trying to see what he can do, and some other
guys to get in there. But definitely another hard hit
for the running back room, like I said question marks there,
like what does that actually look like? And it's gonna
take some time before we kind of see how it
shapes up.
Speaker 4 (03:26):
We've started to hear a lot more about Phil MafA,
especially in the press conferences with head coach Brian Schottenheimer
talking about him and saying that, you know, he didn't
get to see much of him in the spring just
because you know, he had a lot of guys in
front of him getting more opportunities. But he's a guy
that's you know, showing up every day and showcasing some
(03:46):
sort of versatility that he can bring to this team.
But what have you ladies seen from Phil MafA over
the last couple of weeks and how he's kind of
grown into this into his own a little bit.
Speaker 6 (03:57):
Christie, what's physical style? And so really it was more
fun to watch him in the joint practice with the rams,
where there was I mean, nobody's being taken to the ground.
You're not tackling and stuff, but there is more thumping
and a joint practice or anytime they have a padded practice,
it just is an opportunity for him to flash a
(04:18):
little bit more.
Speaker 4 (04:18):
So.
Speaker 6 (04:20):
The one thing about Jaden Blue probably not playing and
if he doesn't a lot of the things that I
think that they would want to do with Jayden Blue
in the regular season in terms of passing game, they
probably wouldn't show that a lot in preseason games anyway.
But yeah, this is a great opportunity for MafA, but
really crucial for Deuce as well. The one thing about
(04:42):
MAF is look and see how much early in the
game he's playing on special teams. If he's playing second
and third special teams, doesn't get in.
Speaker 7 (04:51):
Till like the second half.
Speaker 6 (04:52):
On some of these special teams plays, I don't think
that bodes were real well. But if he's out there,
you know, like he's and punt coverage off the wing
and things like that. If he's in earlier in the
game doing special teams, that's great because you know, whether
it's Jaden Blue.
Speaker 7 (05:09):
Heck, they've had Jaden Blue out there working coverage.
Speaker 6 (05:14):
If you're a backup running back in this league, you're
gonna have to be one of the key special teams guys.
So MafA is going to have to keep working his
way up that and if he does, that means that
they're really liking what they're seeing and giving him opportunities
to contribute in that facet of the game.
Speaker 8 (05:29):
Yeah, going back to the Giraffe, I mean, Jayden Blue
was a spice. We're like, okay, when's this team gonna
pick up a running back? And I was a spice
of it. And I think fil MafA, you know, kind
of got a little bit forgotten about, if you will.
But he's making sure, like Chris he said, take advantage
of opportunities. I have seen him during that joint practice
really mixing in especially. I seen them. I was like,
he's doing a lot of pass catching and that's kind
(05:50):
of something we've been doing. So I'm interested to see
how Probably not gonna again all that stuff we're seeing
out in the field, We're not going to see the
preseason game. We heard Brian Shawnhammer talking about Vanilla Playbok.
That's what that's what we have to look forward to.
Unless he gets mad, right, that's unless that.
Speaker 5 (06:06):
Was probably that. Yeah, his personality is awesome. I love that.
Speaker 8 (06:09):
But no, he's definitely a guy who's not letting his
name be forgotten. Seoan Heimerg. Even when he was talking
about the wide receivers, it goes for the running backs
as well. You don't want a guy who's quiet one
day and then going missing. I feel like film Off
has been pretty consistent and he's making a name for himself,
and that is probably something douce Vawann is feeling the
pressure on right now, especially a guy that hasn't been
(06:31):
on the field since July twenty eighth. I think Chrissy
said yesterday, and he just got out there yesterday, So
it's some it's some pressure because he's had multiple, you know,
opportunities under his belt.
Speaker 4 (06:39):
How do y'all expect them to kind of split up
the reps between Deuce and film Off? It it will probably
be those two guys.
Speaker 6 (06:46):
Yeahs so hard to predict the season because with the
new staff, you're not quite sure what the approach is
going to be. I mean, I think we all agree
we don't really need to see Javonte Williams right now.
Speaker 5 (06:59):
I think ahead and put him in some bubble rath.
Speaker 6 (07:02):
But no, I think just they'll probably get equal opportunities
if the stat sheet will probably show they get about
the same number of carries. So, but they're struggled in
the run game, offense and the joint practice with the Rams,
so you know that they want to come out and
just as a point of pride among the.
Speaker 7 (07:23):
Offensive line and get get something going.
Speaker 6 (07:25):
They were having problems with you know, some of the
linebackers coming in and fit in those gaps and.
Speaker 7 (07:32):
Things like that.
Speaker 6 (07:33):
So I expect a better showing from the O line.
Of course, you're not going to be going against the
likes of Jared Verse the like.
Speaker 5 (07:42):
Coming off the face to let him rest. Uh, this
this running back room.
Speaker 4 (07:46):
You talk about duce Vaughn, who's had back to back
impressive preseasons, but this one seems like it's it's it
means a little bit more just because this room is loaded.
But just talk about how k crucial it is for
Ducebaugh to kind.
Speaker 5 (08:03):
Of separate himself on the pack.
Speaker 8 (08:05):
Yeah. I mean I remember being all the lights and
cameras at his locker last free season, and you know
that was my first season covering the team, and he's
someone you root for. You know, he wants it, he'd
work hard, He's got the you know, I feel like
the IQ it is it's his size, unfortunately, and I
feel like he was not utilized in a way or
they couldn't find a way to utilize him for what
his strengths are. So you're hoping, especially with his familiarity,
(08:29):
uh with the coaches out here, that they can find
a way to make him successful. But again, I think
it's going to be that unfortunately, come down to that's
who can be utilized in the special teams game, cause
they have, you know, enough in the.
Speaker 5 (08:42):
Running back room. If Javonte Williams, Jaden Blue, even.
Speaker 8 (08:47):
Miles Sanders lives up to the height, well, now we're
trying to find spots for someone.
Speaker 5 (08:50):
So does that mean practice squad? Does he get that?
Speaker 8 (08:53):
If film Off is out here, you know, shining like
he has been, so, like I said, I feel like
he's feeling he's feeling the heat, like he's have to
do something pretty impressive out there.
Speaker 5 (09:01):
I believe.
Speaker 6 (09:02):
Yeah, if you try and bring him back to the
practice squad, because he's not a vested veteran, you know,
you'd have to waive him. He'd be on waivers and
so any of the other thirty one teams could claim
him and then you wouldn't be able to bring him
back to the practice squad if you wanted to. So
that's an interesting part of the scenario that you think
about when you're making these roster cuts. Because there are
(09:25):
a lot of guys that it's like, Okay, we want
to keep them on the team. You know, we think
they'd be perfect for the practice squad. And that's a
big change over the last well since COVID really in
the expansion of the practice squad and the ability to
keep veterans.
Speaker 7 (09:38):
On the practice squad.
Speaker 6 (09:39):
It used to be just for like rookie and first
year players, truly developmental. But with COVID and expanding the
roster the practice squad, because they knew that they would
have people testing positive, you'd have to have more players
available for regular season games. They you can have up
to six veterans now, and so a guy like Deuce
(10:02):
would be good for that. Of course he's wanting the
fifty three man roster. But yeah, the other thing about
Deuce is I think that we as media and fans,
we see a guy who's smaller in stature and think
gadget guy. Right, That's that's pretty unfair because of his
great career at Kansas State, and yeah, what you know
Deuce's skill set.
Speaker 7 (10:23):
But if you're.
Speaker 6 (10:25):
Thinking in that fashion, who are the Cowboys using for
some of that fun stuff? You know, some of the
gadgety stuff, Cavante Turpin.
Speaker 8 (10:32):
Yeah, yeah, that's exactly as soon as you said, that's
exactly what I thought about.
Speaker 4 (10:39):
It just makes it hard for Yeah, I mean Christy
said it right. There's no other way to put Cavani
interpid is that guy. I mean they're even with you know,
guys that they're also cross training like a hunter lipgy
that they use in multiple different ways.
Speaker 5 (10:53):
It's it is very challenging.
Speaker 4 (10:55):
And then for the same skill set that duce Von brings,
you have Miles Sanders that that you have Jayden Blue
that brings that as well. So there's multiple guys that
bring the same thing. It does make it a little difficult.
But switching over to that offensive line, Dakota Shepley, who
was taking some reps at backup center, at second team center.
Speaker 5 (11:15):
And just talk about you know who will kind.
Speaker 4 (11:17):
Of fill the gaps in his place if he is
not going to be playing on Saturday.
Speaker 7 (11:21):
Yeah, that's a domino effect because behind you.
Speaker 6 (11:24):
Know, probably Cooper BB. You know, we know what we
got in Cooper BB. So yeah, let's not expose any
more starters to injury. So brock Hoffman, you know, would
would get to the majority of snaps, but Dakota Shepley
as the actually third team behind Hoffman. You know, he's
got he would get some work. But him not being
(11:45):
available after getting injured in Thursday's practice, then that means
that probably TJ Bass would have to step in and
take snaps. So last week or was it earlier this
week saw TJ take a few snaps and then I
think he took a couple yesterday after Shepley went off.
But you know, Shepley's one of these guys that stuck
(12:06):
around for a couple of years, interesting stories from from
Canada and British University of British Columbia and was drafted
by the Canadian League and it has been able to
stick around for a couple of years. But it's really
gonna hurt his chances for the fifty three man roster
if he's not getting these preseason snaps. Yeah.
Speaker 8 (12:27):
Yeah, when you're going that deep down the depth, char
like this, this is there, This is what the preseason
in camp is all about for those guys.
Speaker 5 (12:34):
And he was limping pretty slowly.
Speaker 8 (12:37):
He's moving really slowly, so I'll be surprised if he's
out there, but I mean it would be you know,
great if he could get there, maybe in the second
third preseason game for sure. But I think the O
line group, that's one of the groups that you're not
going to be able to avoid having starters out there,
probably like you're not going to see the big Tyler
Smith out there, but you know, like you said, BB
(12:59):
will probably we'll see him in there. Booker will probably
get a few, but you know, you want to protect
them in out of class. So I think it's also
gonna kind of show when we're going back to the
running backs. You know, they're all one accord, that all
works together. So if the running backs are able to
make something happen with the mix of who's gonna be
out there not predominantly not starters, I think that's going
(13:19):
to be something for Cowboys fans to look forward to
because we saw the joint practice was very scary stuff.
Speaker 5 (13:25):
It goes back to.
Speaker 4 (13:25):
That symphony where that coach Shota used everything kind of
works in working in harmony, the offensive line and those
running backs, and when one thing is working, obviously the
running backs are able to make something shake.
Speaker 5 (13:38):
But TJ.
Speaker 6 (13:39):
Bass we've seen him play a little guard too, yes,
and so yeah, oh yeah, he's guard, Yeah, for sure.
But it's interesting because TJ has had been the backup
really for Zach Martin and had gotten a lot of
playing time when Zach would get nicked up or miss
some time. But he's been TJ has been working probably
(14:00):
merely at backup left guard behind Tyler Smith this year.
But going back to the thing, if he has to
move over, I mentioned brock Hoffman probably going to take
the vast majority of snaps at center now TJ would
come in instead of Dakota. But not having Dakota Shepley
in there as your third center to relieve Hoffman. You know,
Hoffman is one of those position flex guys. He's been
(14:22):
getting time at guard too, So if he's having to
play the majority of the game at center because you've
lost your third team guy Shepley, that messes up the
rotation for everything, because you know he's going to be
one of these active guys of the forty eight active
on game day in the regular season. He has to
be one of those position flex guys as your backup
(14:44):
center and your backup guard.
Speaker 8 (14:45):
Yeah, yeah, for sure, they're going to have their work
cut out for them for the oli to see.
Speaker 5 (14:49):
But I mean, I mean, it's not the end of
the world.
Speaker 8 (14:51):
Like you know, it's third dep guy, and like you said, Christy,
there's there's multiple guys that can play multiple spots on
Do you think Collins will get some restless I.
Speaker 7 (15:02):
Hope so, I hope.
Speaker 6 (15:03):
So he's been working right guard, and I know that
most Cowboy fans we remember that he played right tackle,
but when he first came into the as a rookie,
he was an undrafted free agent for the Cowboys, and
he actually played guard that year and then ended up
sliding out to tackle full time in his second season.
But I have not seen him take any snaps at
(15:27):
tackle in team periods so far. In the couple of
days that he's a few days that he's practiced, he's
been working at guard. And it was so cool yesterday.
I mean it was probably about twenty twenty five minutes
that Lyall was working with Donovan as roku yesterday, the
rookie pass rush or defensive end, working on Donovan's pass
(15:49):
rush and really coaching him up, and it was it
was one on one. I'll say that Johnny Cornelius, who's
backup tackle, was there watching us well, and it was
really fun. Ramon Chenjung, who's the assistant offensive line coach,
was off watching to the side, but it was Lyell
doing the instruction with Donovan and going through his past
(16:11):
moves and you know, talking about how offensive tackle sets
and what he's looking for and making suggestions for Azeraku
on not just coming outside but doing a move and
cutting back in. And we talked about it earlier in
the week when I bumped into Layel as he was
coming in for his workout and he says, you know,
I feel like I have a lot to add to
(16:32):
this team, to talk about to the offensive line, talk about,
you know, the standard that we've had here and being
able to help these young guys, And that was an
excellent example of it on the field after Thursday's practice.
Speaker 4 (16:46):
Hey, that's how you bring in these veteran guys who
obviously have Cowboys.
Speaker 5 (16:50):
Experience to kind of coach up these young guys.
Speaker 4 (16:53):
Sure, I don't necessarily know the standard, but Diamond Azeraku
has been playing very well.
Speaker 5 (17:00):
I'm sure. I can't wait. I Oh, I am so excited.
Speaker 8 (17:04):
Yeah, he's the one guy I know.
Speaker 6 (17:08):
We're gonna talk later about who we want to see.
But on defense, I mean, you know, he's gonna make
the same as the second round, Picky. Everybody loves the
work that they've seen so far. But he told us
after practice that there were times where he thought that
he landed, that he would have had the sack in
the joint practice. But you have to pull up because
you can't hit the quarterback because of that halo around him.
(17:28):
But there ain't gonna be a halo tomorrow night, absolutely not.
Speaker 4 (17:32):
I'm gonna take our first break on that note, and
when we come back, we're going to break down three
things that we're looking for in this preseason game. All right,
we're gonna take our first break. We'll be right back
with more Girls Talk, Boys Talk, presented by Visit Line.

Briana Aldridge and Christy Scales and ladies. I know, I
asked three things that you're looking out for, but I'm
gonna switch gears and go three position groups you're expecting
to see a lot out of on Saturday.
Speaker 5 (20:38):
Who wants to go first? Humm, I'll start it.
Speaker 8 (20:41):
I guess, Okay, I know it's gonna be Vanilla, but
one of the groups. I mean, it's been something that's
been talked about pretty early in camp. It's gonna be
the wide receiver group one hundred and ten percent. Obviously,
this is the time where it's not gonna be the
CD and pick and show. It's gonna be the opportunity
for some of the other guys to get out there.
I'll be interested to see, honestly, how much Jalen Tolbert
(21:04):
will get because I think if we see him out
there a lot, I think it's gonna kind of tell
us where they're seeing that wide receiver three position at.
But Tray Shawn Holden is a guy that you know,
we keep hearing about.
Speaker 5 (21:15):
The mingos in that mix.
Speaker 8 (21:17):
He's finally getting, you know, that fool season with the
Cowboys since coming to the team last season. He came
in November, Dak was heard what was a hot mess
for him. You know, I got to talk to him
about that. He's just really excited for this opportunity. I
feel like, oh, Jaylen Carver can't forget about him doing
some splash plays as well. So that's one group I'm
keeping an eye on. And then I gotta go to
(21:37):
my cornerbacks. I didn't I know Christy for the joint
practice you were hanging out there, but it sounded like
from what I heard in some of the clips that
I've seen, there was some liability things happening there, and
I think it's an just interested to see how they
use chem on Hall, how he takes advantage, right, Skuy've
been here a little bit. That's someone I'm keeping an
eye on. Interested to see how much Kayir gets out.
(21:59):
I feel like he's making a case for himself, but
I've been with him other places where he's had the
hot camp and then got cold.
Speaker 5 (22:05):
So interested to see how many reps he gets, That's what.
Speaker 8 (22:08):
I was saying, because he's technically the starter until Trayvon Diggs.
I think he'll get out there, but I don't think
it's going to be a ton, but I think it's
important to still see how he's you know what I mean,
in that area. But I do think we'll see him
just maybe not a ton and then just really in
the trenches on both sides. I mean, that was the
(22:29):
main thing. Shot he talked about walking away. His team
got a little bit away from technique. I don't know,
just a lot of excitement or what have you, But
they were getting bullied just a little bit up there,
and like I think I mentioned it last show, it
wasn't technically like just getting blown off the line of scrimmage,
but it was, Okay, I have this first block and
then I'm getting beat on the edge or whatever have you.
(22:51):
So just looking forward to see how they cleaned that up.
But those are probably the three things that I know.
It's gonna be a ton of things to watch for it,
but those are probably the three things that I'm looking for.
Speaker 4 (22:59):
Keep your first one, your top one in mind. Okay,
all right, Christy.
Speaker 6 (23:03):
Okay, I'm gonna go defensive backs just because it's been
such a turnstyle of players and just the availability. But
I'm gonna mention a couple of players that I think
may sneak up on people and that are gaining attention
from people behind the scenes here. So Rochelle right was
(23:23):
getting a little bit of first team work. I think
that people know that, like Andrew Booth has been getting
a lot of first team work, but.
Speaker 7 (23:33):
Rochelle they like.
Speaker 6 (23:34):
And then this rookie Zion Children was getting some first
team snaps there in Keemon Hall spots and Deron Bland spot.
There is in the slot as the nickel corner. So
watch out for this guy offensive line. I just want
to see how Nate Thomas does, how he responds. Again,
(23:57):
probably not going against Jared Verse tomorrow like he did
in the joint practice. But you know, Tyler Goeyton, do
we know for sure that he's going to be available
for the season opener in Philadelphia?
Speaker 7 (24:10):
We don't.
Speaker 6 (24:11):
And he didn't make it through last season, you know,
injury wise, so hopefully, you know not that passed his prelude,
but oftentimes in the NFL it is. But anyway, this
might be a guy that could get some significant time
this season. And he's Nate Thomas is getting the first
crack at left tackle ahead of Austin Richards. So let's
(24:32):
see how he plays. And then I'm going to surprise
you with a position group to watch tomorrow. And this
comes from a high up in the scouting department. I
like something under the radar that you're you know, excited
to see. He's talking about the young Safeties. So Elijah
Clark gets a lot of talk from teammates. They really
(24:56):
like this Clark and then of course Mike Smith, He's
going to get a lot of time as well.
Speaker 7 (25:02):
But I think that those guys it's going to be.
Speaker 6 (25:06):
Fun to see because we don't need to see Malie Hooker,
we don't need to see Donovan Smith. We'll probably see
Marquis Spell quite a bit. Wan Yer was back at
practice yesterday for the first time in over a week,
so I don't know if you want to expose him
to anything, but these young guys Clark and Smith, watch
out for them.
Speaker 7 (25:25):
Thirty eight and thirty nine.
Speaker 4 (25:26):
I want to go back to that room, Elijah Clark,
who stepped in and got a lot of opportunities when
Yanye Thomas did not participate in practice.
Speaker 5 (25:35):
What have you seen from him?
Speaker 4 (25:37):
What do you like out of him that he brings
that you don't get too much out of a guy
like MARKU Spell or a Wanye Thomas, and you could
very much say he brings the same same type of characteristics, But.
Speaker 5 (25:47):
I just want to know what does he bring that's different.
If he does bring anything, I don't know.
Speaker 6 (25:51):
I think he's got a bit of a physicality that
they that they like stepping up. And again you don't
get to see you don't. You don't get to thud
and pop and but he's gonna get a chance tomorrow.
And I think they like his smarts. He's a guy
that that got a nice bit of guaranteed money, so
they see a future for him here.
Speaker 7 (26:14):
So I'm just I'm just real curious.
Speaker 8 (26:17):
I'm glad, Chrissy, said Mike Smith, because I was staying
next to you yesterday because I was like, I gotta confess.
I was like, I haven't written that name down. And
he had a really good play knock pop the ball out.
I don't remember what wide receivers going for a ball,
but he had a he made you stop and look
and look him up, and that's what I did. So
I'm glad you brought him up because he's on my
(26:38):
little question by my little question mark box as well.
Speaker 4 (26:41):
Now who's your Okay, go back to your top group
that you lose.
Speaker 5 (26:45):
That's my wide receiver.
Speaker 4 (26:46):
Wide receivers, who do you feel like, with what you've seen,
can make the most impression.
Speaker 5 (26:53):
Yeah, I'll go with that.
Speaker 8 (26:56):
I kind of have to go with too, because I
feel like it's kind of been back in fourth with
Tray shn Holden's plays and Johnathan Mingo's plays. So when
I wasn't here that first week and a half or so,
I feel like I was seeing a lot of Jonathan
Mingo like splash plays. I think I saw like a
one handed catch in the end zone, what have you.
And then when I got here, I feel like it
became the Tray Shawn Holden show a little bit, and
(27:18):
I was taught. I asked Schottenheimer a question about him,
like what he's seen from him and how he's kind
of making the case a little bit hard for that
wide receiver three or the whole the whole group and
initially and he said that one of the things that
stood out to him is the way he's asking questions.
And that kind of stood out to me because not only
is he performing on the field, but behind the scenes,
(27:41):
like if he's not getting something right, or what have
you communicating? And things like that not afraid to do
that as this young guy on the team when you
have the CDs and the pickens in the group. Right.
Speaker 5 (27:52):
But that's what those those two guys.
Speaker 8 (27:55):
Like, honestly, like they're gonna they're gonna make the decisions
hard because you can only keep so many guys.
Speaker 6 (28:00):
Oh may I had one person to the wide receiver
room to don't sleep on ryan floorinoy Okay. Because last
preseason he led the team and last preseason twenty twenty four,
he led the team in receptions in those three preseason
games and he had the only two touchdown catches in preseason,
(28:20):
and you know, great athleticism. Talking with another member of
the scouting department just saying how much he's grown. He's
just a year or two guy, but having the opportunity
just better in his route running and things that you
would expect some of these jumps that you make. But
(28:40):
he showed up last year in preseason. You remember that
that isn't quiet though a little bit.
Speaker 4 (28:46):
He's also someone who I noticed when he came to
Camels like you kind of put it on a little
bit more weight, good weight, sorry, good weight, and he's
making contested catches like it's it has been in to
see him and he.
Speaker 7 (29:01):
Got played at the time.
Speaker 6 (29:02):
Last year he played in eleven games, he started one
of them, but he ended up getting like thirteen percent
of the offensive snaps over the course of the season,
So you know he's got a chance to be a contributor.
Speaker 4 (29:14):
What's the biggest question y'all are looking to answer going
into this Number one thing?
Speaker 5 (29:20):
Number one question.
Speaker 6 (29:21):
Joe Milton, because preseason is mostly about evaluating guys who
are going to be backups, and the most important backup
position on the team because it's the most important position
is quarterback, and you don't have Cooper Rush to rely on, right,
so the staff is kind of lost to security blanket.
(29:44):
And you know that Joe Milton has just a cannon
of an arm right bazooka Joe, but doing the reads
and then the accuracy. So I'll tell you what I
don't want to see. It's the same thing that I
said last year with Trey Lance. I don't want to
see your backup quarterback being your leading rusher in the
preseason because the play breaks down and you tuck it
(30:06):
and you run. And Trey Lance was the leading rusher
last year for this team. Now That's not always his
fault because in preseason, when you've got all these backup
linemen and you're not really game planning and stuff, sometimes
you do have to tuck it and run just for survival,
but you know, go through your progressions deliver it accurately.
(30:28):
So yeah, Milton's number one for the entire preseason.
Speaker 8 (30:31):
That's a big, one, huge one. I agree with everything
Chrissy just said. And as I sat here, I was
going to talk about our run game. But can we
can we stop the run? That's what I'm Can we
stop the run? That's been that's been the message for
a couple of years now with this team, and I think,
you know again in the trenches, how they're well, I
(30:52):
want to see what I know. We're not going to
get everything that Mattiriflute has up his sleeve. But can
they close the gaps? Can they stop the run? Can
they tackle like that was a big struggle, especially in
the first half of the season, just straight up tackling.
Speaker 6 (31:04):
Yeah, I'm excited to see Toya. I've her defensive tackle.
Speaker 7 (31:08):
You can't miss him. He's one. If he turns sideways,
he's like covers two yards.
Speaker 6 (31:13):
You know, he's you know, literally, you know, the fire
hydrant of your your one technique defensive tackle. But if
he can, if he can hold those guys up, and
then Shamar James come in, I mean the linebacker. They
really like him. So yeah, I can't wait to see
what the run defense does.
Speaker 5 (31:30):
Yeah, I want to go back to Joe Milton.
Speaker 4 (31:32):
He's he feels like he's improved in that area.
Speaker 5 (31:35):
Christy, you know, getting a chance to hear from him when.
Speaker 4 (31:38):
He talked after practice and said that he's growing in
terms of his making his checks and things like that,
hearing from coach Schimko. He even talked about he's improving
in the way that he's kind of attacking every day
at practice as well, and that kind of translates or
has been translating for him.
Speaker 5 (31:56):
I mean, is it.
Speaker 4 (31:57):
Realistic to say that like it takes time though, Like
you still have to give grace in areas like that
because some people will take, you know, a longer time
to develop.
Speaker 6 (32:07):
So how much time he played one NFL game He
started it and did really well, won the game, had
a rushing touchdown, passing touchdown. But it comes with experience, right,
and you know, I hope it's a moot point. I
hope that we don't see Milton on the field at
all in the regular season, that Dak starts and plays
(32:28):
every snap of seventeen games, or if Milton comes in,
it's only you know, to kneel down and some garbage time,
maybe get a little experience. But again, pass being prelude,
you have to expect in the NFL these days, that
your court, your backup is going to get some significant time.
And so was Cooper Rush Dak Prescott? No, but did
(32:48):
they did they have to make wholesale changes to the offense. No,
And so Joe needs to show that he can come
in and you know, would be able to do the
game plan, not expecting him to be Dak Prescott, but
you can't throw the baby out with the bath water
when your starter goes out, right, he's got to be
able to do most of the same things. So but yes,
(33:10):
it all, it all comes down to opportunity and playing time,
and so literally every snap is so crucial for Joe Milton.
Speaker 7 (33:16):
In the preseason, I.
Speaker 8 (33:17):
Talk about, oh my bad, because I was literally about
to say Will Grew just said, yeah, that stood out
to me when he talked after practice that he understands
his role in this quarterback room and it is about
right now, It's about Joe Milton getting his reps in.
Speaker 5 (33:31):
And I feel like that whole QB room.
Speaker 8 (33:34):
Just has like a good mesh, if you will, because
Joe Milton, it's just he's fun to watch. He gets
the control sometimes like just kind of watching, I'm like
the ball is still going like it's wild. But I
think once he can be able to just you know,
bring the tempo down or see the field just a
little bit.
Speaker 5 (33:54):
Like you said, it comes with reps.
Speaker 8 (33:56):
And ironically, I was standing next to someone on the
sidelines and they were telling telling me that him and
Chrey Lance have ironically a lot of the same traits,
which I was like, okay, But the ceiling seems very
high for Joe Milton again just his second year, and
like Chris he said, just want to get him to
the point where if Dak even has to come out
(34:18):
for a couple of snaps or what have you, oh,
good morning, hello, or a couple of snaps, that he
can just he can maintain the ship. He doesn't have
to be Dak. We just maintain the ship and we
don't want to feel like our heart is about to
stop if he goes in.
Speaker 6 (34:36):
I tell you what is interesting, though, is just the
way you know Milton.
Speaker 7 (34:41):
He's fun.
Speaker 6 (34:41):
He's lucy goosey, out there having fun with teammates. The
way teammates respond to him. The personality is so different
from Cooper Rush, you know. But Cooper Rush had the
had earned the trust of his teammates, right. He was
kind of the steady Eddy, kind of calm guy. And
Milton's out there dancing in between. And I don't mean
loosey goosey in a reckless way. I just seen in
(35:03):
a fun and kind of energetic way. And I think
we'll see some of that, you know, hopefully he'll get
to exude that on the field as well, and on
the sideline. I love as the sideline reporter. This will
be my twenty seventh season. I love preseason because you
see how the new veterans, the veteran free agents like
(35:23):
the Solomon Thomases of the world, the Jack Sanborns right,
how they work into the mix and how they're mentoring
and helping on the sideline. And then some of the
young guys. You see their personalities very quickly. And also
new coaches. We have such wholesale coaching changes this year
that I love watching how everyone interacts on the sideline
(35:46):
and kind of the division of labor.
Speaker 5 (35:48):
All right, well, we're going to take our second break

We got to talk preseason still, but are there any
guys that you feel could give more work than you
(39:04):
probably expect.
Speaker 5 (39:05):
Christy, I'll go to you first.
Speaker 6 (39:07):
Yeah, I'm gonna go with tight end John Stevens. We
know that Brevin span Ford has been out. We saw
Brevin the last couple of days. He's been wearing a
walking boot. We don't know Jake Ferguson. He wasn't going
to play in preseason anyway, but he got popped yesterday
and practice and wasn't able to finish with a hurt
his back. We'll get an update on Schottenheimer later, but
(39:30):
Princeton Fant backed up tight end did not practice yesterday again, well,
he was in. He watched practice wearing street clothes. So
John Phillips is going to get a lot of work
and then you'll see guys named Voldo Fairweather and Tyler
Neville as well. But this is a real opportunity for Stevens,
(39:50):
who has earned the admiration of teammates and coaches for
the way that he has attacked rehab each of the
past two years with torn acl each of the past
two years, and there's he's had a couple drops out here,
but he's also shown some flashes as well. He's a
huge target at tight end. Especially in the red zone.
(40:12):
So this will be a chance for even more extended
playing time for Stevens, especially if Fan doesn't play.
Speaker 8 (40:18):
The preseason is such a it's such a weird time
because like you want to see what all these players
can do, but you have to like put a pause
on some of the plays you show, and then you
have to start to look at, okay, well, who's hurt,
Like like, we know we're gonna update from Jake Ferguson
earlier today, and we know that's someone you're not gonna
see the preseason. But it's like, okay, it's just like
a quick injuries. It's gonna linger and then you kind
(40:40):
of have to plan on who's playing behind him and
what have you, and it's just like, I don't know,
I'm just hoping there's a lot of three good updates
from the injuries from we saw yesterday, because like I said,
there was guys taking these when Ferguson got down and
oh yeah.
Speaker 6 (40:54):
It was I mean you could hear you could hear
the hill wayatah.
Speaker 5 (40:58):
Yeah, it was very quiet.
Speaker 8 (41:00):
So I'm glad when I saw the video of him,
you know, doing this, so the trainers put his helmet
on I'm just hoping for a good update without because that.
Speaker 5 (41:07):
Changes the room. Yeah, drastically.
Speaker 4 (41:10):
I'm going to go James James Houston defensive end, just
because they obviously want to see.
Speaker 5 (41:17):
Who their pass rushers are. You have guys like Marshawn
Neeland who looks to have taken a good step in
year two.
Speaker 4 (41:24):
Sam Williams coming off that ACL injury, who has been
the fire for this defensive line throughout camp. You also
have guys like Dante Fowler who they brought in from Washington,
well totally.
Speaker 5 (41:36):
Brought back to Dallas, who had.
Speaker 4 (41:38):
A career season in twenty twenty four. But James Houston
has shown some good things in the run game, also
helped out and potential sacks since they're not allowed to
tackle right now. But no, he even had eight sacks
in his last time playing with the Lions, I believe.
So yeah, I'm excited to see how much playing time
he gets because that defensive room is Yeah, it's gonna
(42:01):
it's gonna be a lot of fun.
Speaker 10 (42:02):
Oh man.
Speaker 6 (42:03):
He splashed just a rookie with the Lions three years ago,
he had eight sacks and if not for injuries and
then just just kind of a fun fact, you know,
out of Jackson State and played for Dion Sanders there,
and he was actually Dion's first college player to be
drafted into the NFL. So it'll be fun to talk
to James when we get a chance one on one
(42:24):
to talk to him about his time with Dion. But
this guy definitely has the skills and you know, maybe
find a home here in Dallas and be part of
that past rush rotation.
Speaker 5 (42:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (42:36):
Can you say you're a com sar, No, I think
I'm gonna I'm most interested. Honestly, I've been hearing a
lot of harry On Whiffrey's name coming up. I just
think overall the defensive tackle position on when you look
at the dep chat, I think it's gonna be the
opportunity to see.
Speaker 5 (42:52):
What they have there. They've been mixing up some names.
Speaker 8 (42:55):
I think Mozzie's been baiting just a little bit during
this camp and some of the guys behind him, I
say his name, yeah, yeah, him and Perry On Winfrey
do because that I think that's a pretty big question
mark right now.
Speaker 4 (43:14):
Yeah, I think there's a lot of question marks that's
fair as we speak. I mean, just the running backs,
the defensive line, cornerbacks, if you had to choose one
player that you just know, Hey, they're going to shine
in pre season, no doubt about it. They've been showing
me everything that I need to see through our camp.
Speaker 5 (43:34):
Who's that guy?
Speaker 6 (43:36):
I hope it's Milton. I really do, I really do.
Ok Yeah, I'm gonna.
Speaker 5 (43:42):
Stick with that, sticking with Joe Milton m.
Speaker 6 (43:45):
And I think as roku You know, I don't know
that they have to see a ton from him, but
you want.
Speaker 7 (43:50):
To give the rookie work.
Speaker 6 (43:51):
But oh my gosh, if he shows in games the
flashes that he's shown here in camp, I'll go with
him as my defensive guy.
Speaker 5 (43:59):
Okay, so you had so you had Milton Milton. Okay, dang,
I'm gonna go with Nate Thomas.
Speaker 8 (44:10):
I think I'm pretty excited to see I'm pretty confident
like he he didn't get blown away out there right
in that joint practice, but I'm gonna go with him.
Speaker 5 (44:20):
I'll go with Nate Thomas. Set it on the other
side of all, yeah, mm hmm.
Speaker 7 (44:31):
One of the cornerbacks who.
Speaker 6 (44:35):
Something the name he had to pick six at the
at the Raiders last year. You know, the one thing
there were no takeaways in the joint practice on Tuesday.
I know that's disappointing because that's something ebra Flus is
known for and something the defense is really preaching. But
the defense did manage overall last year five interceptions in
(44:56):
the preseason. Four of them came against Stetson Bennett and
the so Stetson had nearly as many complations to Cowboys as.
Speaker 5 (45:04):
He had up days last year. So see if that
trend continues tomorrow. Yeah, talk about no takeaways. They also
had too many explosive plays as well, shoddy talking about that.
Speaker 4 (45:16):
So a lot of things to clean up, but that
will come with time. But a lot of guys hoping
to kind of make some noise throughout the first or first,
second and third preseason game.
Speaker 5 (45:26):
We'll have a chance to see that.
Speaker 4 (45:28):
It kicks off at four pm Pacific times, six o'clock
Central time. It'll be airing on CBS eleven and catch
Chrisy Scales.
Speaker 5 (45:36):
On the sidelines.
Speaker 4 (45:38):
All right, ladies, this has been great for Nicole Hedgerson,
Chrissy Scales, Brianna Aldridge.
Speaker 5 (45:42):
We will be back here next week.
Speaker 2 (45:45):
