Jesse calls in from California to tell us about the last padded practice out in Oxnard. (Hint: it was a good one.) But, the Cowboys head back to Texas with a lot of questions still to be answered. Could those answers come from outside the organization? Also, how tough mentally is it now for Mazi Smith? Can Joe Milton learn to put some touch on his passes? And why are people overlooking Jalen Tolbert?

Speaker 1 (00:02):
The following.

Speaker 2 (00:02):

down version to Jesse. Will be calling in. Nate is

Speaker 1 (01:04):
About who knows?

Speaker 5 (01:05):
Who knows? Got pall in the back keeping us live together.

of you regulars and you get to come hang out
with us after the Green Bay game. So, as Kurt said,
Jesse is still an ox gnar. This should be our

(01:58):
final show with kind of disjointed next week, Jo, we'll
be back in the studio together on Monday, Mondays.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (02:08):
I think we're still doing every other day.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
Friday next week, yeah, and then the season will be here.

Speaker 1 (02:14):
So Jesse will call in a little bit. We have
no idea where Nate is.

Speaker 5 (02:18):
He let us know about our last minute.

Speaker 1 (02:21):
I'm not here out here where you have a good show.
All is well hopefully I don't know abouy else? How
you been good? Good?

Speaker 5 (02:31):
Good? Yeah, it's been a crazy, crazy off season, but
doing well.

Speaker 3 (02:36):
Yeah, everybody's crazy off season personally or yeah, a lot of.

Speaker 5 (02:42):
A lot of what it's always team wise, just a
lot of projects of season. But it's been fun, it's
been good, been busy.

Speaker 6 (02:48):
Ye.

Speaker 3 (02:49):
So we touched on it. We touched on it briefly.
I think last show Jesse was talking about, you know,
the the Netflix premiere, and here in the local media,
you know, everyone was analyzing the sound bites from what
Jerry said before on the Blue Carpet, you know, and
the one that stood out was it's a soap opera

(03:10):
three hundred and sixty five days a year, which listen,
that's been.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
A byline in this building for years.

Speaker 3 (03:17):
Like we as employees, we say that, right, yeah, and
we know a lot more than what the general public knows.
So behind the scenes, it's even more like, oh, really
that's happened, Like that's really happening.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
That happened.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
I mean, anytime you work in a building where a
helicopter lands on your practice field and you know, you
never know a rod might get off of it, Steven A.
Smith may get off of it, Kevin Costner may get
off of it.

Speaker 1 (03:44):
You just never know what's going to happen.

Speaker 5 (03:46):
Who's going to walk by.

Speaker 3 (03:47):
It's just crazy, right, and so but that really, in
my mind, let me know, that's what these contracts in
training camp are about.

Speaker 1 (03:59):
It's to me like I think they do it.

Speaker 5 (04:03):
On purpose, they drag them out.

Speaker 1 (04:06):
I think they do Kurt.

Speaker 5 (04:08):
Because seem to be the other reason.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
I mean, what other reason would there be?

Speaker 3 (04:12):
This is your like you know, and Jerry still saying
I expect him to play. He's under contract, he should
be playing the first game. But from a football standpoint,
if your goal and your purpose is to win football games,
you want your football players to be in football shape.
The first football game of the football seasons.

Speaker 5 (04:33):
Such a distraction. I don't I don't get it.

Speaker 1 (04:35):
And not even the distraction part.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
But like what Jesse and Nate being physically calloused up,
your skins hardened, you don't bruise as easy. You being
ready for foot. I mean there's there's in shape and
there's no doubt in my mind, Micah CD, Zach Martin,
all those guys physically, cardio wise, string wise, you were

(05:00):
in physical shape. But like you know, the two guys
that played professional football that are on this show have
always said there's a difference between being shape and being
in football shape. And you can't get football shop until
you play football.

Speaker 5 (05:14):
I mean even a minute it after you know, last year.

Speaker 1 (05:17):
So there's no other reason.

Speaker 3 (05:18):
Like you you, I think they're gonna get a deal done.
I don't think there's any way they don't.

Speaker 5 (05:24):
It seems like he's the tone seems more hard line.

Speaker 3 (05:28):
It does, and you know what it seems And maybe
it's just me, maybe because I haven't been in the
building the last two or three years, but it seems
to me like with each one of these it gets
a little more. It seemed pretty hard line with with CD,
there's a.

Speaker 1 (05:46):
Little more hard line.

Speaker 5 (05:47):
Yeah, this one seems worse to me, there's more. You know,
Cherry's like he's got a contract, he's gonna be He's
got a contract. I don't remember him really talking like
that with CD, and I could be forgetting, but I
don't know. It seems different this time, and I don't
I still think they're going to get signed, right, I
mean they have to.

Speaker 3 (06:04):
But if they don't get it signed, do you think
Michael plays that first game? Yes?

Speaker 5 (06:11):
I think he will do too. You know, that's just
too much money.

Speaker 3 (06:13):
Too much money, and plus, like Jesse said, that dude,
that dude.

Speaker 1 (06:18):
Loves loves football.

Speaker 3 (06:20):
Oh yeah, and just think as big of a stats
guy as he is. You miss a game, you're missing
out on career stats, right, you're missing out on season stats.
You're you miss a game, you're you're automatically one game
behind in the YEA, the sack King of the League,
you know, defensive player of the year.

Speaker 1 (06:41):
All that you're losing ground.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
So I don't think as a person he's gonna miss
His agent's probably gonna hate it, But I don't think
there's any way he misses.

Speaker 5 (06:48):
No, just I don't. It's funny. They asked Jerry yesterday
about what's keeping you from negotiating, and he said nothing,
there's nothing. There's nothing, nothing stopping them from negotiating. Why
aren't you negotiating?

Speaker 3 (07:01):
You know, just I think it's the drama, man. I
think it's I think it's the drama. And I think
it's you know, we're talking about them everybody on TV.

Speaker 1 (07:13):
They're you know, they're at the.

Speaker 3 (07:15):
Other camps and they're first that the scroll at the
bottom of the screen. Michael Parsons still not signed, you know,
there he's being talked.

Speaker 1 (07:22):
And think about it.

Speaker 3 (07:24):
If they're not talking about Micah right now in this
off season, in this training camp, what are they talking
about Joe Milton?

Speaker 7 (07:33):
No?

Speaker 3 (07:33):
Are they talking about maybe pickings, but like nothing's really
happened there, Like, you know, Dak hasn't looked great at camp.
You know, you're no one's really jumping off the page.
So if you're not talking about Mike, are you even
talking about the Cowboys at all right now? Other than
coach Schottenheimer being a new coach bringing in a new culture,
bringing in you know, like, are you really even talking

(07:55):
about the Cowboys?

Speaker 1 (07:56):
I don't think so.

Speaker 5 (07:57):
Not nationally, but no much. I mean, they'll always find something.
Stephen A. Smith isn't going to find a reason to
talk about the Cowboys. But it's you know, you're this
is the driving You're the fourth.

Speaker 1 (08:05):
Or fifth story right now.

Speaker 3 (08:06):
You're the number one story on every national media. To me,
that's the only that's the only excuse.

Speaker 5 (08:13):
You heard the conspiracy theory that they're going to announce
the signing the day the the documentary drops. I have
not like to get the full just the fullang or whatever.

Speaker 3 (08:24):
Exposure and promotion, and everybody's in a great mood.

Speaker 1 (08:28):
You know what.

Speaker 3 (08:29):
I didn't like Jerry yesterday. I like him today because
he saw Michael. I'll go watch that tonight. When is
that thing? When does that thing premiere?

Speaker 5 (08:36):
It's next, Paul, you might know for sure? Is it Tuesday?
Next Tuesday? Next Monday and Tuesday Okay, so next week,
next Tuesday, so we've got a few days to wait. Yeah,
you're going to watch it.

Speaker 3 (08:51):
I wasn't until Jesse sold me on it because I
was I was. I was honestly listening to all you know,
local every every show was talking about it, and I
was like, I know a hundred more stories than what
are going to be in there. And I know, you know,
I know all this. I've seen it, I've heard about it.

Speaker 1 (09:08):
I know what's in there.

Speaker 3 (09:10):
And then when Jesse said just the cinematography and the
way they put it together beautiful, I'm like, all right,
you know what, I'll do it.

Speaker 1 (09:17):
I'll go watch it.

Speaker 3 (09:18):
I'll go watch it. So speaking to Jesse, he is
on the phone.

Speaker 1 (09:24):
Live from Oxnard, California.

Speaker 4 (09:26):
Jesse, Holly, what what's going on?

Speaker 8 (09:31):
Man? What's going on?

Speaker 1 (09:31):
What up? What up? How's it going out there?

Speaker 3 (09:33):
Give us the vibe. What's the weather like? Is Dak
gonna is Dak?

Speaker 8 (09:38):
Just?

Speaker 3 (09:38):
Is it a good thing or a bad thing? That
his last pass out there was a pictic, a long picture.

Speaker 8 (09:44):
No, you know, I just believe it that Dak is right.
He's like, man, let me make sure Sam Williams and
this training can't feeling good about himself and he can
show the rest of the world that he got some speech.
I'm gonna throw it right to him on the goal
line nine yards the other way, so right there. You know,
you don't talk about leadership, man, you just show it.
You go out there, you just throw a pick six.

(10:05):
But everybody can see that Sam Williams is back and
that he's ready to take over in the absence, you know,
if Michael Parsker does n't come back.

Speaker 9 (10:11):
So yeah, talk about that.

Speaker 3 (10:12):
That's clete leadership from sharing the sacrificing. Huh, sacrificing for
the greater.

Speaker 10 (10:17):
Good, of course.

Speaker 8 (10:18):
I mean it's not like God didn't throw one hundred.
You know, training can't touchdown that. You know, nobody wants
to say, oh, well, he's the greatest thrower since John
l What. No, but the one tip six is he throws.
They're like, oh see that's sit right here.

Speaker 9 (10:30):
We're in mid season, came he's just being a great teammateer,
saying leaves.

Speaker 8 (10:34):
Man, let him leave a little bit of competence.

Speaker 1 (10:36):
So let me ask you this.

Speaker 3 (10:37):
If you're dak do you do you say, uh uh
one more? Get the lineback up. I'm not going home
like that. Get one more rep?

Speaker 1 (10:45):
Would you? Would you do that? Or you just ride
off and be like.

Speaker 8 (10:51):
I come from I come from the I come from
the aging group, and you know I was raised by
coach Roy Williams and we couldn't leave the gym on
a misship. You don't leave the court on the misshot
So I get you. If I'm like that, I'm like, hey,
not run another one. Let's do another one, you know,
let me let me, let me get this off my
ledger right there.

Speaker 9 (11:07):
Yeah, out of here with a layup.

Speaker 3 (11:09):
I feel like I feel like that's a Tom Brady move.
Uh huh uh, get back out here.

Speaker 1 (11:13):
Run it again, Run it again, for sure?

Speaker 8 (11:17):
For sure?

Speaker 1 (11:18):
Well what's going on?

Speaker 8 (11:19):
Man?

Speaker 1 (11:19):
What is there anything different? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (11:21):
Is anything different today than it was Tuesday? Or did
you get to see enough? I know you kind of
came in on the on the tail end of stuff.

Speaker 8 (11:27):
Now you know what I saw the best practice they
had in all training can yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yesterday's practice.
You know, yesterday's practice really got after it. It was
one of the most physical practices. But I've seen or
heard it many people confirmed that.

Speaker 9 (11:46):
Also.

Speaker 8 (11:47):
You know, I sat down I say, say, I need
set down myself and my crew at d LLS. We
sat down and had an interview with Koshatti.

Speaker 3 (11:56):
Oh very nice, give us some inside, give us some insight.

Speaker 8 (12:02):
I held coach Shotte Steet to the fire. I don't
just I don't just say stuff on here and pree
stuff on here. And then when I see the man
to his face a.

Speaker 5 (12:10):
Year and a half, I didn't tell.

Speaker 6 (12:12):
Him that on that left that part out. We had it,
but no, I said to him, I said, you know, coach,
you know you've been talking about this being a you know,
physical brand that you wanna that you want to build
here and things like that. When I'm not seeing it,
I'm not your words and your actions aren't matching. You know,
help me understand the things that's insane to what I'm

(12:34):
actually seeing on the field but in the preseason game
and the practices and things of that nature. And you
know you can go and check that out on UH,
on my.

Speaker 9 (12:41):
Twitter and on d L l U s UH. And
he gave it.

Speaker 8 (12:44):
He gave an answer. He gave it. He not only
did he give an answer, but he gave me. You
know what, that's a really good question. Now, I don't
know if he was pandering a little bit to me,
but he said, I had two really good questions that
I asked him. So you know, that was the theme
of the week for me, asking all these great questions.
But yeah, you gotta sit down with Coach Shotti, and
you know, for me it was you know again, you
guys know me right, Like, I'm not the guy that's

(13:04):
just gonna just say he's been crazy for shock value.
And you also know, I'm not afraid that if I
have to face the man man, the man that I'm
okay with saying to his face. I've always believed that, like,
I'm not going to be the guy that tweets uff
and says stuff and then if I have to see
the man, tuck my tail. So it was it was
a really good mature conversation that uh that we had
with Coach Saudi's and gave answers that people really loved.

(13:28):
But you know I had to That's what I what
I brought on.

Speaker 5 (13:32):
Him that sounded like yesterday they were pretty physical.

Speaker 9 (13:37):
Yeah you know what they were. They were and I
asked them about it cause they even.

Speaker 8 (13:40):
Think he even threw uh, he threw Marquise Bell Uh,
he through Marquis bell out for a couple of plays
because uh, there was a past play to it was
a reverse to Mingo, and Mingo kind of got off
the field and Mingo kind of dipped the show a
little bit and Marku's bell laid the boom on him,
knocked him, uh, knocked them off, knocked him off the
eat into the sidelines. And so the coach was like,

(14:05):
you know, he said, he said, I want my guys
to go to the edge that I don't want to
go over it. But when they said that, we're keeping
guys up off the ground. And so, but yesterday was
one of the most physical plats that they had and
I'm hoping I'm hoping in preparation because they getting ready
to pay the Baltimore Ravens, and you know the Baltimore Ravens.
That is their uh, that is their style. That I
mentioned this earlier today on my show, and I said

(14:27):
to them, into the guys, I said, there's a difference
between a culture and a way, right, the good teams,
you hear the Patriot way, you hear the raven way right,
and the cowboy wasn't trying to build a culture. It's
not a way.

Speaker 9 (14:39):
It's not a way of life.

Speaker 8 (14:40):
It's not a way of living. It's not a way
that they go about me. They're trying to build that.
But if you know the Baltimore Ravens, so Baltimore Way
is a physical, physical brand of smash my football. So
I hope the guys are getting rebbed up because they
got a big match up this Saturday against the Baltimore Ravens.
And you don't want to go two weeks in a row,
you know, getting your lunch money takes.

Speaker 3 (15:00):
So what's their schedule, Like they're packing up now or
when do they fly back tonight?

Speaker 8 (15:06):
So I think they had their final walk through this morning.
You know, after yesterday's practices. You should have seen the trucks.
The trucks when they're getting loaded up, guys and equipment
was getting thrown in. They they shut the servers off.

Speaker 9 (15:19):
And the Wi Fi was getting getting loaded.

Speaker 8 (15:21):
They was they were ready to get up out of there. Uh,
they had a glorified walk through this morning. And uh
and after that, these guys are getting on the getting
on them, getting on the plane and coming on back home.

Speaker 5 (15:31):
Yeah. I think by the time our show's over, there'll
be pretty much bustles will be pulling out.

Speaker 3 (15:40):
Where you can go another another one down in Oxar.
Huh man, what are you doing the rest of the day, Jesse.

Speaker 9 (15:48):
Yeah, I'm actually in a shuttle right now, headed to
the to the terminal, so I'm going.

Speaker 6 (15:53):
Home to very nice on the bus.

Speaker 9 (15:57):
Yeah, she's whipping this thing, blowing.

Speaker 8 (15:59):
A horn, whipping g.

Speaker 3 (16:04):
What so what made it physical? What makes a what
makes a practice physical?

Speaker 8 (16:11):
Hitting the guys willing to want to make contacts, not
just studding up to start up like you know, you
shoid A lot of times guys will go run by
and just tap your hips or you know, run by
and like even oh, I got you. No, these guys
were meeting guys in the hole of the guys were
you know, dropping their shoulders banging, you know, and the
noise started talking. The chatter started talking. Even my Keiths
Bell when he when he uh, when he laid the

(16:33):
hit on Mingo. You know, the chatter was going back
and forth and the office to deeply chirping at each other.
And then you know, mar Keith Bell yell in the office.
You know, y'all wasn't saying that that that pooh pool
when the rams and hip for y'all a S S.
And I'm like yeah, I'm like yeah, I like that.
And so you know that just got everything webbed up.

Speaker 9 (16:54):
And again, you know, guys were you know, coach.

Speaker 8 (16:56):
Always talks about, hey, I want my guys playing with
but low a pad level. And what you mean by
that is you see a lot of these guys vertical
upright posture. Right, you can't play football upright.

Speaker 9 (17:07):
This game's always played.

Speaker 8 (17:10):
The game is always playing in a in a ready position,
and so you know, he wanted his guys to getting
lower and play in a in a much more uh
ready stamp. And so yesterday you saw that, you saw
those guys playing with lower pad level. You saw those
guys willing and ready to to initiate the contact and
be physical of one another, because that's the only way

(17:31):
that you get to that way, right, like not the culture,
but the way this team is going to become a
physical football team. It's going to be the way, the standard.
Then they got to do it in practice and starts
in practice to start with each other, and we build
that talent then and then now we take it to
the field. So, uh, yesterday was one of those days
where they really put together.

Speaker 3 (17:53):
To hear how do you so you said that the
Marquis Bell got kind of kicked out of practice for
a couple of plays.

Speaker 8 (18:01):
Not put out of practice, but he got he was
in the starting group and they kicked him off the field. Yeah,
a couple of plays and then they let him back in.

Speaker 1 (18:07):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (18:08):
But you go from you know, two hand touch and
just kind of hitting, you know, light light, you know,
a little smack on the shoulder pads to actually having
a physical practice.

Speaker 1 (18:21):
And you know how it is, Jesse, If you're physical
and the.

Speaker 3 (18:23):
Other guy's not physical, somebody's somebody's either get hurt or
pissed off.

Speaker 1 (18:28):
Do you do? You do the.

Speaker 3 (18:30):
Coaches go around before practice like that and be like, hey,
I want you guys, I guess I want you guys
to get your pad level loon and I want you
to I want you to hit and run through some tackles,
stay off the ground or do you just does it
just develop.

Speaker 1 (18:43):
And happen like that?

Speaker 8 (18:44):
You know, when you put pads on, it is an
unspoken spoken rule when it is a full padded day,
you know what that if it's just helmets, the shoulder
pad or it's just helmets to shelves. Then you're kind
of like, okay, you know, well, but when you put
full pads on, it is it is? It is, no,

(19:05):
it's go top.

Speaker 3 (19:06):
What is full pads these days? Because nobody wears thigh
pads anymore? Like, what is a full paddy?

Speaker 7 (19:12):
There?

Speaker 8 (19:13):
Yeah, full pad is when you put the pants on,
like you know, some guys will just be out there
and shorts or you know, when you put the pads on,
when you put the helmets in the shoulder pads and
you know your your supposed thigh pads or whatever it is.
Nobody wears these pads anymore.

Speaker 5 (19:26):
But yeah, so.

Speaker 6 (19:27):
That's that's okay, that's full pads.

Speaker 1 (19:29):
I got you.

Speaker 3 (19:30):
All right, Hey, Jess, let us take our first break.

Speaker 3 (21:57):
To you each and every show by blockchain dot Com.
Thank you Blockchain dot Com. Kurt Danielson Studio with me,
Stan Engross, Nate Newton is parts unknown today we have
no idea and Jesse Holly is making his way through
the airport terminal at L A X.

Speaker 1 (22:16):
He's back. He may he may have to put the
phone down.

Speaker 3 (22:18):
To go through the scanner there and then, uh, what
is it the what do.

Speaker 1 (22:25):
You call airport security?

Speaker 3 (22:28):
T S A couldn't. I don't know why that failed me.
I want to say T A B C. And I
was like, that's not it, that's not it. So oh so, Jesse,
what what was your overall your your trip out there?
What was the vibe? You know, Nate was out there,
he gave us his thoughts. What being around some of
the guys, talking to some of the coaches, what's your

(22:48):
what's your feeling on the season going into what what?
What do you feel as different this year than it
was last year?

Speaker 8 (22:58):
Honestly, it's just staid a lot of questions, Matt. There's
still a ton of questions that needs to be answered
for this football team. They're going to continue to evaluate
guys in training camp, They're gonna contain to evaluate guy
in these preseason games. But it's still a lot of questions.
There's still we still don't know about the secondary, We

(23:20):
still don't know about can this defensive line stop anybody?
You know, we have a good feeling about what we
have at receiver, but we don't know what this running
game is going to be. We don't know what this
offsive line is going to be. There's still so many
questions that need to be answered that haven't been answered,
and I think, you know, they're still trying to figure
that out. I think they're going to see a different

(23:40):
approach from coach Shotty this next game. The thing about
coach Sttenheimer is he's an honest man. I like to
believe that he's an honest man somewhat, but he's also
very a self aware of mat and he's years to talk,
so he's heres to chatter about what happened in that
preseason game and how they came out with six straight passes,

(24:00):
and you know how you're not running the football like
you want to, so you know how guys didn't play
the last game. So I think they're gonna see a
different I know for a fact he's gonna see guys
way more guys play in this football game than you
did the last season games. But again, the answers to
the questions that we had in January and February, in

(24:23):
March and April and May in June still are there
in mid August. They don't know, they cannot give you
a definitive answer of what it is going to be
on the offensive line. They're still you know, Mazie comes out,
he makes his statement like, you know, I gotta.

Speaker 9 (24:39):
Be We all know you got to be better, bro.

Speaker 8 (24:40):
You know we know, we all know they not three years.
So they don't have an answer up front. They cornerback
lives with the injuries and stuff like that. You know,
they're trying to hope some of these guys come along,
but right now they don't have an answer. They are
hoping kyer Elm works out and the Ron Bland works out,
but they don't know who's gonna play the slot. They've
worked out, you know, not not worked out guy, but
they tried different guys in the slot in practice in

(25:03):
the game. So again the questions that we have linebackers,
the questions are there, and they have not gotten the
definitive answer after three four weeks of training camp here.

Speaker 5 (25:15):
In Austin are Yeah, that's what I mean. There's three
weeks the opener, three weeks from the day, and especially
to me, secondary and defensive tackle are just two glaring,
glaring question marks. No I don't know. How do they
how do they fix this? How do they solve those questions?
Get the answers in three weeks if they haven't even

(25:37):
been able to do it in six months or whatever.

Speaker 8 (25:40):
Yeah, I think they continue. I think they continue to
evaluate these guys, try to put together a plan for
these guys. But make no mistake about it. You know.
Will mcclay's uh, you know, Jerry talked about you know,
football being the three hundred and sixty five days. They
got three hundred and sixty five day a year. Things
that goes Will too, so busch about them. Dollar, Will McClay,

(26:03):
He's looking at different teams and say who has availability
some players that they may have had their eyes on
the other teams because when we get to that point
of roster cut being need to be made and guys,
you know that that you have that window of open
kind of haywiring, this of of of guys being released
from the rosters. They want to be fund and center

(26:25):
to pick some guys up. I said the other day,
even because the backup quarterback, we might not even have
the backup quarterback on this football team on this roster.
You know what I'm saying, Like I honestly because right now,
Joe Milton, he is not ready to be your backup
quarterback if you had for whatever reason, there was a
game Saturday and it was a regular shuping game and
Dak Prescott happened to be kidnapped by Marsham. Will Grigs

(26:50):
your backup quarterback. I'm telling you, like Will Grids your
backup quarterback. I don't know if they're willing and ready
to go onto this season with their backup quarterback being
Joe Milton and Will Grier. I'm that's just my my hunch.
There's no inside information. No one talks to me. I
let't talk to anybody. I'm just looking at that and saying,
you cannot feel comfortable about what you have at backup
quarterback currently today and the season is that close that

(27:14):
that's you know, quot from being here. Uh, but you
don't remember you still have that. You know, most teams
carry that emergency quarterback and try to get a guy
to the practice squad and so on and so forth.
So if they want to, if they want to keep
Bill Milton because they don't want him to go through, uh,
you know, another team and you can keep him little
greyer ain't going nowhere, So if you want to kind
of get him back through the practice squad or whatever

(27:35):
it is, or you know, have him do the fourth
quarter like whatever it may be. I think they're also
being a lookout for a Vetsam quarterback if there's one available,
if there's one worthy enough to be available, not saying
that they're like searching for one, but like if one
comes about, like you know what, like if Cooper Us,
for example, get your release. I don't think he's gonna
get released. I know he has a contract in Baltimore,
but like someone of that kind of style, of that caliber,

(27:57):
that that you know, those type of years in I
could see that in you a guy they say, you
know what, come on over, he's see a little bit
better about our backup quarterback situation.

Speaker 3 (28:06):
And that's why you're seeing you're not seeing Will Greer
and you're seeing Joe Milton this weekend, right, is because
they know what they've got They've shot. He said, we
know what we got Will Greer, right, so you know
what you got there.

Speaker 8 (28:17):
But they don't.

Speaker 1 (28:19):
Right.

Speaker 3 (28:19):
That's my question is would you rather see I think
you know what you got in Joe Milton too? Right,
Like not not ready to be a backup?

Speaker 1 (28:29):
Which one would you rather see? Get reps this weekend.

Speaker 8 (28:32):
I get why he's doing it, I do. I get
why he's saying, like, we have a better understanding of
what Will Grier is, right, we know we have film
on Will grid He's been around the block a little while,
so we know a little bit about what he is.
We're still trying to figure this whole thing out about
you know, is Joe Milton's worst a live arm? Is
there something there? So I get the evaluation. It's more

(28:54):
so trying to figure out or the layer that you
have to figure out with with than it is trying
to figure out what you have in your career. So
I think that's the biggest thing. But they don't know
about either one of these guys. What they're really doing
is they're playing to whatever God they believe in, Okay,
whatever shrine that they pray to that Dak Prescott stays healthy.

(29:19):
Because these are the two guys that you have to
go into this season. This will we do with Cooper
us we can get a couple of games in there.
I don't know. I don't know if that's a real
life thing with the guy that you have backing up
that crust out right now.

Speaker 3 (29:32):
And is that why you're not seeing Dak at all
this preseason? Is because you're just saying if something freakish
were to happen, like you start off the season going,
we're done.

Speaker 8 (29:45):
Yeah, yeah, I mean you.

Speaker 3 (29:47):
Would you play would you play him at all just
to kind of shake the rust off, put him in
there for a series, just to get some time here.

Speaker 8 (29:52):
Guy who stand on that. I'm old school. I think
he should play, right, But I'm not. I'm not ignorant
to the fact that I know that Jerry Zones is like, yeah,
I can't afford both on the field, record wise and
monetarily with us having these many time time games of
not having number four out there. I'm not trying to

(30:13):
pay the dude sixty million dollars to be sitting in
the stands to be, you know, a guy just doing
the game. So I understand it all, but I just
I don't know, man, what you play this game of football?
And I say, Z, not us, but them, this game
of football. But we're doing more and more to half

(30:33):
players stop playing the game, Like I don't understand that
less practices. Let's tag they don't want to play in
the pre seasons. It's just a lot of stuff and
fluff and the like. In order to be good at football,
you have to play football. That's just what it is.

Speaker 3 (30:49):
All right, Let's take our second break. Yes you're good
or you want to.

Speaker 8 (30:52):
Yeah, I'm good. I'm getting close to security. So what
happens is I'll tell you and I'll put you on
mute so I get through the gates and I'll jump
back on.

Speaker 1 (31:00):
We'll take our first break. Maybe that'll happened while we're
on break. If not, we'll deal with it.

Speaker 5 (31:04):
Are you in the line right now?

Speaker 8 (31:06):
I'm in the line. I'm trying to hit I'm trying
to hit it the beat, trying to get the beat.

Speaker 5 (31:12):
Everybody looking at you, like, what's his guy doing?

Speaker 1 (31:15):
Don't worry about it. I'm on multiple podcasts, I'm on TV.

Speaker 3 (35:14):
Look, okay, before you tell us what you want Mozzie said,
you gotta do.

Speaker 8 (35:18):
Something, you guys, talk because I'm going I'm about to
go to Okay, I'm about to go through the bill,
So talk, Yeah, pick it up minutes. I'm gonna jump
back off.

Speaker 1 (35:27):
That works. That works. We'll get to the We'll get
to the Mazzie thing in a minute.

Speaker 5 (35:31):
What are you feeling sorry for Mossie?

Speaker 3 (35:34):
That's what I want to ask Jesse about what point
does it click?

Speaker 1 (35:38):
You know, I've always wondered this.

Speaker 3 (35:40):
If you're we're all decent looking guys, me you, Nate, Jesse,
some of us, some of us uh pocketbooks are more
attractive than others.

Speaker 1 (35:49):
Makes your your you go up a couple of uh
numbers or half numbers on the scale, right.

Speaker 3 (35:56):
You know, at some point you got to realize how
you are right and it's and then you realize, like, okay,
this is the level that I'm going to get the
rest of my life. And you kind of you kind
of relegate yourself to like, okay, this is it. If
I'm going to pro create, I gotta play it. Swim
in this pool over here. I can't go swim in
the in the day club.

Speaker 5 (36:17):
Pool, box your weight whatever, Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 3 (36:20):
I wonder with athletes, and we'll ask Jesse when you
come back, Like, how mentally tough is it when you
get drafted as a first rounder and you realize, like
you just aren't that good because you've been the man
your whole life, and then you even get drafted and
then you just the talent doesn't equal the expectation.

Speaker 1 (36:42):
And how mentally tough that is. It's got to be hard,
got gotta be tough. We'll ask him when he gets back.

Speaker 5 (36:47):
I mean, he said that he's had three diffensive coordinators
in three years, and he said that wasn't really a problem.
But I got to think, you know, one ask him
to lose weight, one ask him to gain weight. Now
he's about to losing weight.

Speaker 1 (36:58):
I mean, it's just, well, Kurt, if you can play,
you can, that's true.

Speaker 3 (37:01):
It's like if like Tyrone Crawford, they had him going
up and down and inside and outside and like, you
know you could play football.

Speaker 1 (37:10):
You can play football. You know, It's true. You may
have to adapt a little bit, but like if.

Speaker 3 (37:16):
You can play right, yeah, like if you can catch,
you can catch. Like you may not understand the route,
you may not run him the right way, but if
you can catch, you can catch, and you can figure
all the other stuff out. So what are you looking for?
Are you even gonna watch the game this weekend?

Speaker 5 (37:30):
Yeah? Well I have to do some writing nerd in
the game, so I'll watch it. Yeah, I mean there's
a lot. I do hope some of the starters play.
I'd like to see them get some reps in the
kind of just like you said, shake the rust off
something in live action. All right, he made it through.
He's not in the holdings.

Speaker 3 (37:51):
We got a question for you. Mozzi said, you gotta
go do something.

Speaker 1 (37:57):
I'm a first round pick.

Speaker 3 (37:58):
And then he also said, you know, he's multiple defensive
coordinators since he's been here. He said that wasn't the problem.
And Kurt and I were just talking about, you know,
if you can play, you can play. How how disheartening
is it for a player when you've been the man
at every step of your career and you get drafted,
expected to be the man in the first round and

(38:20):
then you have to come to the realization like I'm
just not good enough to be where I need to be.
Like how mentally tough and disrupting to your life is
that that you just hit this brick wall and all
of a sudden, you're just not good enough no matter
what you do.

Speaker 8 (38:41):
Yeah, I think it's for him, for anybody, it has
to be a bit frustrating, because again, you believe in
yourself and you believe in the talent that you have,
and then you know what happens is you get to
this league and you realize you are the best player
on a team, you know, the best player in the
world on from every team and not just you know
something that you have to deal with. And for Mazzie,

(39:03):
he just hasn't figured out a way to take that
next step to you know, to be able to go
from the best player on Michigan's defense to being the
best player or one of the best players in the
National Football League. And I'm sure he eats away at him.
Maybe it doesn't, I don't know, but you know, you
would like to see you you would you would like

(39:23):
to see it bothered him in such a way that
he's like really showing in putting the work in to
show improvement. That's the biggest thing, is like, if it
frustrates you enough, put the work in improved and just
have to feel like he's putting the necessary work in
to improve, O tell me all the listeners you want.

Speaker 5 (39:44):
But you don't think it's just a talent problem. It's
a it's a work ethic problem too. Maybe you know,
I think.

Speaker 8 (39:51):
It's a I think it's a Yeah, listen, you don't
he's in this league. He was a first round pick.
You know what I'm saying, Like, that's a hard, hard, hard,
hard way to miss. So I think there are some
things that he has their talented. I just don't think
he puts in all the necessary work to make yourself better.

(40:12):
I just don't. I just don't feel like he looks
at the game in that type of way where he's
willing and wants to put in all the work to
be better.

Speaker 3 (40:20):
What will you be watching or who or what will
you be watching this weekend? Offensively and defensively, any specific players,
any specific schemes.

Speaker 8 (40:32):
I'll be in my Nate Newton mode. I'm watching the
right guard Tyler Booker, who coach Shot Hammers said will
be playing this weekend and I'm hoping and praying for that.
Nate Thomas, who had Penn snaps last week and pray
does defense was was decent and his ten snaps that
he had last week that he plays up for the

(40:52):
twenty five thirty forty snaps this week and see if
you know he can't continue to work himself through uh
you know, you know, evaluation process at that left tacking position.
So definitely looking at those guys up front, I do not.
I mean Bill Milton is Bill Milton right like he
is Bill Milton. Is he's an experience. Is he gonna

(41:14):
do something good? I'm sure he will. I'm sure he will.
Is he gonna overthrow somebody by country mile that's your house,
you know?

Speaker 3 (41:23):
Is he gonna break somebody's fingers on a five yard Probably.

Speaker 8 (41:27):
He is a rodest chapman eights away with a six
hour fastball, right, That's that's what they're getting with him.
I did see them working a lot more with him
and practice this week with hey, take the profit, take
the checkdown, take the pass right in front of you.
But Joe's And it's the thing what I try to

(41:47):
tell people, because people there's two things. People trying to
tell me, Well, what if he does what if he
definitely in the next two games, and I go to
Daddy race, add if he does something good in the
next two games, if that ain't race, what he hasn't
done in the last six months. For me, it doesn't right.
For me, it doesn't. But also the thing that Joe
is while they're trying to get Joe to understand the

(42:08):
totality of what it is to be NFL quarterback, you
have to break years and years and years and years
of Joe being able to just, oh, I have the
song of arm and the part he had the song
of arm in little league, high school, and college. So
you always thought that I don't have to be on
time because my arms can get it there. I don't
always have to be you know, have the anticipatory ability

(42:31):
because my arm doesn't. We'll get it there. And what
you're realizing now is at this league that type of
stuff doesn't fly. They've got to have the anticipatory stuff
that goes along with it.

Speaker 5 (42:41):
Can you learn that, you know, the touch, the you know,
we know he can throw it hard, but can he
throw it in there? You know? And we saw him overshoot. Guys,
can that be taught that? Can he learn that? Or
is it kind of a yo?

Speaker 9 (42:54):
Yeah, it's it's going to take here's what he's faced with.

Speaker 8 (42:58):
It will take time. But this clock is ever changing
it's never not moving. So it's someone willing to put
in two three years of off season work, training, camp
season work, off season work, training, camp season work for
him to finally get to that point. If this was

(43:20):
the nineteen nineties early two thousand were quarterbacks sets, you
don't saying for two or three years before they were
expected to go out there and play, didn't. Sure, you
may have an infection on your hands. The problem is
we don't live in that day in time now, right
you have to be able to come and show improved
or right away, you know, right away, or they move on,
They move on to the next Joe Miltons, and they

(43:42):
move on to the next whoever, so it can be taught.
I don't know. I don't know what his timeline is.
From the Cowboys perspective, are they willing to put another
two or three years into a quarterback like they did
with Trey Lanton and really wait it out see if
it all works out for them? So I'm will tell

(44:02):
you as as as our friend the great Nikkas Sagnola
would say, we'll find out, yes.

Speaker 1 (44:12):
Before we let you go.

Speaker 3 (44:14):
One thing that I can't I can't believe we haven't
talked about this more, maybe just because it's it's not
worth talking about on the show.

Speaker 1 (44:22):
The entire training camp.

Speaker 3 (44:23):
I don't think we've really mentioned this position, maybe just
very briefly.

Speaker 1 (44:28):
Where are we at with wide receiver? I know we
know who wanted to is. Where are we at with
three through six or however many we're going to carry?

Speaker 6 (44:36):
Where?

Speaker 2 (44:37):
What do you?

Speaker 8 (44:37):
What's your take on that, Jess, I don't know where
people and this is this is the Internet for you?
I don't this is this is the Internet showing itself.
I don't know. It's crazy because there's this notion that
somehow somewhere that the Oanpober isn't your number three wide receiver.
I don't know who.

Speaker 9 (44:55):
I don't know who who believes that.

Speaker 8 (44:57):
I don't know who said that. I don't know why
this is even a sing Daylan Tobert is your number
three wide receiver? Book it stamp it, put your house
on it. Unless he gets hurt between now in September fourth,
if they come out in eleven personnel, it will be
Ceedee Lamb, George Pickens and number one Dyalen Tobert. I'm sorry,
I know that Florinoid is making plays and they want

(45:19):
to talk about holding and all the other kind of
good stuff. Cool kudos those guys. And I say Tober
because I think I think Turpin he's in the rotation,
but he is packaged specific if that makes sense. But
he's not your number three, but he's gonna play some
running back. He's gonna do some package things. He'll be

(45:40):
there sometimes if he's a third wide receiver, is something
that they want to do specifically with him on that
particular play. But Dayling Tobert is your wide receiver, a
number three. He was that at the end of the season.
He was that during the draft, he watched that after
the draft. He was that in Ota, he was that
in Mini caamp, he was at the start training camp,
and the unless he gets injured and it's end of

(46:01):
this season, injury between now it's September fourth, David Hopert injured,
number three Rotten that is that is that stones. They
love him. He plays special teams. He is Dak Friendley, Like,
I don't know where this notion came from that these
other guys are like on his heels and ming going off.
They're not.

Speaker 1 (46:20):
A couple of times who's who's five and six?

Speaker 8 (46:23):
Then I guess you could put said, Turpin is like
three b's or four whatever how we want to put
that in there, uh village Dennis Mingo, then it will
probably be lawing lord. Okay, if they six don't know
what they're gonna keep six, then they go with five
because they may carry more backs. You know how the

(46:44):
numbers go. But right now I think tells you if Ceedee.

Speaker 9 (46:47):
Lamb is George Pickens, is Jaalen Tobert it is.

Speaker 8 (46:51):
It is Cavante Turpins and it's johnthan Mingo, those are
your five gonna be And And don't get me wrong,
Ray Shawn Holden has had some good He's going to
train to CAP. He's not ready to go out there
and do your every down.

Speaker 9 (47:04):
Number three number three receivers.

Speaker 8 (47:05):
He needs some more time. There's some other guy that
need more time. But he's a.

Speaker 9 (47:12):
Every training camp, every team has they have this one
good receiver who's really gonna shine.

Speaker 8 (47:17):
That's holding Every team has every team hold it, every
single team how to traa hold it. And that's how
I'm knock on him. He's just not ready to step
into that rope.

Speaker 3 (47:27):
Yeah, gonna be interesting with the numbers with turfing being
that special that special team, special package, guy, and then
not really having a standout running back. You know your
tight ends you you need some depth there and don't
really have anybody that's stepping up behind Ferguson. So be
interesting final cuts to see where they'll keep the extra

(47:47):
the extra guys. So Jesse, good luck on your flight.

Speaker 8 (47:51):
Man.

Speaker 3 (47:51):
It'd be good to have everybody back in studio next week.
Watch the game, good for us because I'm probably not
gonna watch it this weekend. If I do, I'll just
watch the offensive and might be the only game I've
ever just strictly not even taking my eyes off the
offensive defensive line. Just don't even watch the quarterback, receiver, secondary.
I'm gonna just let me see what I what we

(48:13):
got on the offensive line. So all right, man, have
a safe trip. We'll see you next week. Oh wait,
Kurt gets seeing you. Just good seeing you, Paul, Thanks
for keeping us on the air. This has been another
episode of Hanging with the Boys.

Speaker 1 (48:29):
There we go.

Speaker 2 (48:31):
This has been a production of Dallascowboys dot Com and
the Dallas Cowboys Football Club.
