As Nate tells us from Oxnard, lot of talk about the pace and intensity of Brian Schottenheimer’s practices … and some of the chippiness it’s brought on. Is that a good thing? Hey, if you’re not practicing aggressively, can you be aggressive in games? Plus, Jesse has a few players he’s hearing good things about, including rookie Donovan Ezeiruaku. It’s a football Friday!

Speaker 5 (01:13):
When we speak, brought to you each and every show
by Wingstop Where Flavor it gets It's wee welcome to
the show name off the top this week or this show.
Instead of instead of being the kaboos, you are the
engine of this thing today. So yes, sir man home

(01:34):
a lot of you know, it's fun back here to
listen to a lot of interviews on all the area
local radio shows. I think Shody did his little media
tour yesterday. You know, Dak spoke. A lot of the
young guys are talking CD what do you what's the
from from afar here in Dallas. It seems like there's

(01:57):
a little bit of juice in this team. It feels
like for the first time in a while, there's excitement
among the players and you know, real all the players
are talking about other players. Another thing, I think every
player on this team now has a nickname. I think, yeah,
everyone of the name Yeah, yeah, UHS and DJ and

(02:20):
you know all that.

Speaker 1 (02:21):
Take serious nicknames coaches give them.

Speaker 5 (02:25):
Do they catch on them when the coach gives it
to them or I wouldn't think so.

Speaker 3 (02:29):
No, no, because normally the coach, the coach catch on.

Speaker 6 (02:33):
To the nicknames that players have given and they just right.

Speaker 3 (02:37):
See a lot of times we don't let the coaches
in on our nickname because they are coaches. You have
to be a special guy or try to get a
special relationship. You know, because when I played Jess, we
didn't let everybody in on our nickname. Some players wasn't
even allowed to, uh you know, not new players anywhere

(02:58):
would come in and just start calling you know you're
by your nickname?

Speaker 4 (03:03):
Yeah, I mean your nicknames. You don't want to coach.

Speaker 2 (03:06):
Give you a nickname, just Cornya gives you a nickname, man,
Just that's corny man.

Speaker 4 (03:13):
Like, you know, nicknames are organic. It comes from the
guys like either your mom or you're like you know,
you get like your born nickname, your MoMA and them
might have gave you a nickname if he was younger
or something like that. Kind of just roll with you.
But like, nicknames are organic that come from the place.

Speaker 5 (03:29):
Are these nicknames that Coach Schottenheimer's throwing out or they
are they pre existing nicknames?

Speaker 1 (03:34):
Are these nicknames that he's of them?

Speaker 3 (03:36):
Are?

Speaker 7 (03:37):
Okay?

Speaker 3 (03:37):
Majority of them are? Yeah?

Speaker 6 (03:40):
All right?

Speaker 7 (03:40):
Well what's the vibe, Nate? What's the energy? How are
you feeling about?

Speaker 5 (03:44):
I know we won't really know until Sunday when the
pads come on, but so far, what can you tell
that's different?

Speaker 7 (03:50):
Or is anything different this year?

Speaker 3 (03:53):
I know, I know this don't mean nothing, but more
guys are.

Speaker 6 (03:57):
Speaking to me more than ever I've been out.

Speaker 8 (04:03):
Here a long time, and uh.

Speaker 3 (04:06):
And more players to walk passionate. Hey, how you doing.

Speaker 6 (04:08):
It's like they enjoy being here.

Speaker 3 (04:11):
You know. It ain't us against us against the world mentality.
They have happy, go lucky.

Speaker 8 (04:18):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
Like I say, yesterday, he did not ask them to
be one hundred miles an hour in every session like
they've been doing the previous two days. But uh, they
still have a high tempo.

Speaker 5 (04:30):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (04:31):
You know guys. Uh, you see guys getting a little
bit more chippy because you know, they they are putting
hands on people and Mike didn't really want you to
put hands on people, and and and no situations. They're
allowing guys to put hands on folks, especially at the
wide receiving DV positions. So guys are still being very competitive.
You know. We'll just see Sunday when they put the

(04:54):
paths on how much more physical they can get where
they keep the same ti because he want everything ran
fast during practice. He turns the music up insanely loud,
and he runs practice. From that point of view, he
don't want coaches doing a bunch of coaching. He want

(05:15):
guys going and doing their jobs at a high level.
And he he believes that when we go into the classroom,
we'll correct. When we go through the walkthroughs we are
over correct. We'll talk about the things we talked about
in the classroom. We'll do it again doing the walkthrough.
But when we map out this practice, I give y'all

(05:36):
the intenerarity of the practice, the morning practices. I want
you wide open when I asked you to be wide open,
and I want you running, and so far, so good?

Speaker 7 (05:50):
Is that new? Are there coaches that? Is that something
that's normal or is that kind of that's.

Speaker 3 (05:56):
The Pete Carroll, Nick Sabing, Those two coaches I know
have practice like that. Pete Carroll, Nick Satan with Alabama,
I know they practiced that way. Dion adapted some of
that at Colorado where we're gonna do most of now.
The forty nine ers back in the day, they always

(06:17):
coached off the film. You know, they give a script
and they run plays, and you didn't see a lot
of hey, let's do that over or let's run that
back until we get it right. They ran. They're like, hey,
we'll teach on the move and as many people if
we can get in here. But that's what we're gonna do.
We're gonna run this rotation.

Speaker 6 (06:35):
We're trying to run one.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
Hundred plays and you know, and the smart guys to
catch it and we'll ride with the smart guys. That's
what that competition is all about. If you are showing
to be better, then this certain guy you're gonna get
a chance at his job.

Speaker 5 (06:50):
And Jesse, you said, Belichick coaches that way, right, Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1 (06:55):
Coaches All players like that more that kind of tempo.

Speaker 4 (07:00):
Because it's realistic. It's realistic. You're not being bogged down
by doing the same thing over and over again, you know.
And one of the things that Shunny talked about is
the competition competing that that lends, that lends to competing, right,
if coach's in the field, stop, it's slow down, it's
do it over again. That kills the vibe and the
momentum of competing. But getting out the way makes it

(07:22):
feel more game like, makes it feel more realistic that hey,
I can't I can't help you in the games. We
can make the call and I gotta you know, when
we're in the stadium, if we're in wherever and it's
a one hundred thousand, they're screaming ninety thousand. They're screaming, I
can't help you. I can't go out there. Voter Willson
Lenna say stop, you know, run it over. No like bull,

(07:43):
let's start flying. They flying and better you better either
get down and lay down and you mess up. Here
comes the next play. Come the next play, right, And
so it breeds that level of you know, hey, we're
moving on to the next play. We're moving fast, we're
teaching fast, and like Nick was saying, then we go
corrected in the film. But those guys who are able
to catch on because you're moving at such a rapid

(08:04):
pace is these are the guys that the coaches begin
to trust more. They get the reps, they get the
they get the ability to go out there showcase themselves.
Those that can't, that parade swiftly moves by and you
get left in the wind and they move on without you, right.
And so that that's the thing that I do appreciate
with what Schottenheimer is you see that that speed of practice.

(08:26):
I was listening to I think it was I think
it was Voch and he was just talking about how
they break the huddle. They are different temples how they
break the huddle. Sometimes it's the slower, sometimes it's faster.
They're giving a little bit of different looks when they
break the huddle. So they're just trying to find ways
to to to have different cadence and different tempos, but

(08:47):
competing at every turn.

Speaker 1 (08:49):
You said that, Nate said, it's already looking a little chippy.
We've heard in a couple of fights. That's that's to me,
more like week three training camp. Everybody's sick of each other.
You're heading right out of the gate. They're going at it.
Is that a good thing? Is it healthy?

Speaker 3 (09:01):
That's that's more like that ain't happened in a couple
of years because it was almost, uh a fine to
get too physical or to get to get too handsy.
It was almost a fine.

Speaker 1 (09:16):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (09:17):
Coach McCarthy did not like that, he you know, and
even to the point where guys were excused to let
the rams come in here and beat us up last
year because you start a fight and protect yourself. That
that burned me, man, That hurt me a lot. And
so like I say, I got three, three or four things,

(09:38):
I'm looking at number one. We started training camp number two.
Uh uh, we we're finna get in, We're fin to
get into these paths. Number three, the Rams are gonna
show up. Number four the pre season start, and the
grand finale is when the season starts. So it's four
or five things I'm looking at, and I'm looking to
see what transfer does the speed and the temple keep up.

(10:02):
You know, as you get into pass on Sunday, as
you as the Rams come in on the field, are
you going to keep that tempo? Because I promise you
I've seen how the Rams do it, and each level
they pick, they pick it up to the point where
it thrusts them, a very young team into the playoffs.
I'm not now, I'm not losing my mind and saying

(10:22):
too who the Cowboys are at this point. But as
you get better and as you gain confidence you it grows,
it grows. So I don't know how far these kids
to go, but don't I don't want them to.

Speaker 6 (10:36):
Take away the aggressiveness as you know, as they're smart,
like they're being like a couple of times I've seen
guys come at guys.

Speaker 3 (10:43):
One hundred miles an hour and I thought it was
gonna be a collision. But you know, and I think
the reason is not have been a lot of collisions.
Is coaches, not on defenses. Not actually these guys to
stop and wrap up, because now if you actually got
to stop wrap up, then you you you may get
some a little bit more collisions. But these guys are

(11:05):
allowed to just swat at them and keep going, you know,
swat at the ball. There's been a lot of balls
on the ground, Fellaws. There's been a lot of interceptions.
I don't know it is that because Dak is rusty.
They trying to get the new wide receivers auggested. But
there's been a few interceptions and there's been some balls
on the ground. And like you said, Jesse, these guys

(11:29):
allowed to hoop and holly and go crazy. The defense.
That's that's when it that's when it slows down. But
they won't even let that go along. You know, they'll
get it. They'll get it back going as the defense
over there party a little too hard. The offensive still
they'll be getting ready to run the next play. So, yeah,
it's been wild.

Speaker 5 (11:49):
Well, we we're gonna let you go because we want
you to go enjoy the weather today.

Speaker 3 (11:54):
But I have one right only it's only seventy six degrees.
They hello, Michelle, They hello to the guys Hi, you guys.
Good good, Yeah, but.

Speaker 4 (12:09):
We were glad to know that you're out there with
me because you know, he needs some straightening out. He
needs he needs somebody to keep him in line.

Speaker 7 (12:16):
Absolutely.

Speaker 3 (12:19):
If she wouldn't have came today, I'd have been up
in San Francisco.

Speaker 5 (12:21):
Bro Hey, Nick, we got one question for you before
you before you leave, the last time we talked to you.
Before they get the pads on, right, does does poor
Omas he have a chance?

Speaker 7 (12:36):
First?

Speaker 5 (12:37):
He comes in at three hundred pounds now they want
him lighter. Last year he gained weight to get heavier.
He was asked to lose weight the year before that.
I mean, is this kid like, is he like, come on?
What what do y'all want?

Speaker 9 (12:49):
Like?

Speaker 5 (12:49):
What do you think he's gonna have a chance this year?
And what does he what does he look like physically?

Speaker 3 (12:55):
He looks good. He looks good. He lined up as
a starter. They gonna they're gonna give him first shot.

Speaker 6 (13:03):
But uh, the old.

Speaker 8 (13:04):
Man Honey actually favorite name he played for the forty
nine ers. What's the kid's name?

Speaker 3 (13:11):
Jess?

Speaker 8 (13:11):
He's the older guy now, Solomon Thomas.

Speaker 3 (13:14):
Solomon Thomas looked like he's twelve years old.

Speaker 8 (13:17):
He built some good for old man Solima. Well he
ain't not a twenty nine years old. I'm coming to
my old man.

Speaker 6 (13:24):
He can't in the league.

Speaker 8 (13:24):
Got a Stamford, a young man.

Speaker 3 (13:27):
He looks good. The draft fix look good.

Speaker 8 (13:31):
So and I'm talking about just the speed of them running.
I ain't talking about nobody's hit nobody, but for the
speed and everything. But Mozie Jesse, you you wrote something
yesterday on X It's kind of spill like what you wrote, bro, Yeah, yeah,
would you right?

Speaker 4 (13:48):
Well, it was a play where Tyler Smith completely took
him out of the division of the camera. It was
just and it was the same old thing. Let up
the ball standing straight up. That's never going to get it.
I don't care if he three forty three sixty three
ninety five hundred. It doesn't matter. If you played in

(14:09):
the trenches and you're one late. The ball is in
Dak's hands before he's like you see the ball kind
of hitting. Excuse the taint of the center in the
hands of the quarterback before he's moving. You will lose
ninety seven percent of the time if the ball is

(14:30):
in the quarterback's hand and you ain't moved yet. So
he still laid off the ball, and then when he
finally gets off the ball, he stands straight up, so
like Tyler comes off, and Tyler's almost waiting for him,
like waiting for him to lift up so he can
get under his pads. And then when it does, Tyler
gets him up and he takes him three gaps over

(14:51):
out of the play like they were they were in pads,
Like if they were particularly in pads, he would have
dumped them on his head.

Speaker 3 (14:58):
Yeah. The thing another thing, like I was telling childs,
it's kind of hard for a guy to stay low
because you don't want to hit somebody's uh with your
helmet because everybody's lower. But when they get on them pads,
I know the coaches, the defensive coaches are screaming and

(15:20):
opposite because you see a lot of guys popping up
because they don't want to get their shoulders and stuff bumped.
But I am so with you. Mosie has to go
overboard and staying low and not getting washed out. He
has to be cognizant.

Speaker 4 (15:38):
At what point toime does he say, you know what,
I'm just gonna anchor down? All right, cool, we're here,
But you ain't gonna just keep pushing me through two, three,
four holes over like at what pointime? All right, cool,
we're gonna compete, but you ain't gonna you ain't gonna
wash me out of here.

Speaker 3 (15:55):
Let me say something Jet remember his rookie year when
I try to tell everybody if I'm if I'm mosie,
you know what I'm gonna do. I'm just gonna take
off a run straight through the center, and that's I'm
with you. At some point you're gonna you know, you know,
come up forget technique. I'm just gonna run through this, dude.
And if they's double team me, I'm just gonna grab

(16:15):
it and I'm gonna grab grass and i'ma hold on
with everything I got. I am with you. But for
some reason that does not register with him, and that
is the coach's job. This year. The defensive line coaches
to say, we gonna either do that, but I don't
think they're willing to go deep into the season at

(16:35):
all with a guy that's not gonna try, and that
I think that is gonna be that this is his
difference year. This is the third year. We gave him
every opportunity and and my deal is I'm not bringing
him up no more unless one of y'all bring him up.
Mazi is not in my conversation. He's got to show
me he's got the flash man. It comes a point

(16:57):
where you have to flash, where you have to show
somebody who you are.

Speaker 4 (17:02):
I need, I need consistency, a flash with consistency.

Speaker 3 (17:08):
I'm with you. See, I'm not like most people and
you're not either. Just and we try to help Kurt
and share him by saying, I don't look for a
first round pick to be a superstar. When you get
a superstar like number eleven, the Lion that that's rare
out of thirty two picks, you may get five guys

(17:29):
that just outshine the class. But other than that, when
you draft the first round pick, what your action for
this guy to be is a B level player that's very,
very consistent over a long period of time. And that
is what Mozie hasn't given us. Going into his third
year now, he's not even been average. I am with you,

(17:51):
but I'm not gonna talk about him this year unless
he flashes and shows that consistency.

Speaker 1 (17:59):
Let's just out of the show, all right.

Speaker 7 (18:02):
Well, that way he won't get hurt. Hurt, you won't speak.

Speaker 5 (18:07):

Speaker 1 (21:07):
I wonder if she's out there the whole time.

Speaker 5 (21:09):
I don't know when you head out, Jesse, tenth August, the.

Speaker 4 (21:13):
Tenth tenth of the fourteenth.

Speaker 7 (21:15):
Very nice. That's a Sunday, right, correct, on Sunday? All right?

Speaker 5 (21:20):
Well, a lot's been said in the media, a lot
of stuff going around, a lot of interviews. Is there
anything that's jumped out at you guys that you wanted
to talk about on the show. With all the cool
stuff that's being produced and being put out there.

Speaker 1 (21:33):
I did want to ask Jesse, you mean at the
end of the first segment there you were talking about
the pads coming on Sunday and all that. What should
we expect with now with PAD? I mean we talk
about being physical and all this, but are they really
how aggressive are they being? How's it going to go?

Speaker 4 (21:49):
No, I think it should be if this is culture
and identity and all these things like this is this
is the moment where you start putting those like we
laughed and mocked and joked. I think it was like
week fifteen or sixteen, and Mike McCarthy's like, we're putting

(22:11):
the pads on and we're going to get physical this week.
In practice it was like yeah, forty nine ers like, yeah,
we're going to get physical. It's like it's too late
for that. That's not hey, who you are. You need
to stick to the Rivers Lakes that you used to
those December January level physical games are made in August,

(22:34):
are made in August. If this is who you're going
to be when those paths come on, it need to
be it needs to be indicative of it. There needs
to be a level of aggression and physicality if you're
going to run the ball and that's what you're going
to be in the trenches, all of that stuff when
those paths come on, because they are limited. It's not

(22:57):
I came in, Nate was you know, it was too
a It was three days and they will fully pad
it and there were no numbers and there wasn't no
count on how many. Now you have practices, there's a
number on them. You can't do certain things at this time.
They got days off every three days. And so it's like,
if we're not drafting a bunch of physical dudes and

(23:17):
we're trying to instill a physical culture, then it's only
one way to do that. It's to be physical. You
gotta practice it. And so for me Sunday, when the
paths come on, that same energy that shot he's jumping
around with all those guys. It needs to be that
way in practice. There needs to be an emphasis on

(23:39):
let's take care of one another. Let's always take care
of one another, but we're going to compete and we're
going to be physical. There is no more like take
off the kiddie gloves, take off all of that, because
you know, you know, you always worry about I don't
want guys getting hurt, and I don't want to. This
is football, it's football. It's football. If either you're going

(23:59):
to either they're going to be what you need them
to be or they aren't. But let's not sell false
hope to ourselves. Let's not let's let's not play Kate
and sugarcoat this stuff. And then we get to the
season and somebody puts it in their mouth and and
again I've said this many times in this show. Don't
mistake a physical player or a couple of players that

(24:21):
are physical and aggressive, like, for example, Sam Williams. He's
gonna be aggressive, he's gonna be physical. We just need
to do it properly, right, We need, sayone to be
on side. Don't do it after the whistle. You don't
have to teach or tell Sam Williams to be that.
He's naturally going to be that. But don't say the

(24:42):
defense is physical because Sam Williams is physical. That's not it. No,
Sam Williams is physical, he's nasty. The defense isn't. So
we you have to bring everybody along, right, how.

Speaker 1 (24:55):
Do you get those guys that aren't predest you know,
aren't normally built to be physical or whatever. You know
what I mean.

Speaker 4 (25:02):
You gotta you gotta, you gotta put the you gotta
put the coals in the fire. You have to put
the coals in the fire, and you have to. And
I'm not saying that they're going to be the most physical.
But what it is is is that you know, we
what is it? What is the saying, uh something tied
raise all boats? Hot tie raise all boats? Well, hot
tie high physicality raises all boats. If everybody's doing it. Now,

(25:27):
I'm not saying you're going to be the most physical guy,
but because you're around it and you're in it, and
that's the way that you do, you tend to get
your physicality tends to get raised up. Again. I'm not
I'm not saying that you're going to be the bully
of the backyard. But you look around and you go,
you know what, I gotta set this thing up. You're

(25:47):
gonna be out of the yard. You still got it
like a sore thumb. And now coaches know I can't
and your teammates know I can't trust this guy to
be physical in a matter of that moment that that
that matter most, right, And we all we all remember
and it's had nothing to do with Shoddy, but it
has something. It's a stain that's been on the Cowboys
for a while. We all remember the late hit on

(26:09):
Dak Prescott and not a single soul retaliated, not a
single offensive lineman retaliated, not a one, not a one,
right like, And I'm not saying that's toughness, but that's
toughness like that, that's that's a that's an attitude of
mentality that you know, whoa whoa whoa. You don't you
don't do that, not to that dude. And so it's

(26:30):
those type of things where you gotta you gotta get
this team to a place of we're not taking that anymore.
We're not taking that anymore. Because Philadelphia is thinking right now,
I know they get but when they play dout, they're
gonna say, we're gonna line up and we're gonna run
the ball down.

Speaker 7 (26:47):
Their throat, drive them out of the frame.

Speaker 4 (26:49):
We're gonna drive him out of the frame and guess what,
and when they get on the offense, we're gonna line
up and we're gonna drive whoever they want right back
into the quarterback. They think that a lot of teams
think that when we can play gains. The good teams,
like all the good teams think that, oh, we're running
the ball and there's nothing they can do about it.

(27:09):
And we've watched it time and time and time and
time again. Where we get into a game and we
get to that third quarter, that fourth quarter of teams
just go Okay, no more fun and games, guys, So
turn around and head off to the guys, and we're
gonna just keep plowing and plowing. And the Cowboys have
had zero resistance for that for years. And so when
the Pats come on Sunday, for me, I need to

(27:32):
see it. I need the Fight's fine, that's fine, cool,
good passion. We gotta be physical nine on seven, one
on ones, team drills, it doesn't matter. We have to
be a physical, physical, physical bunch, and we can't let
teams push us around.

Speaker 1 (27:48):
You like with Hooker and Tyler Smith that the offensive
line has the opportunity to be pretty physical and tough.
We'll see, but man, know about that defensive line.

Speaker 4 (28:00):
Boy, they gotta do something.

Speaker 5 (28:02):
I'm interested to see Tyler Booker because if he's nasty,
we might have the nicest nastiest off it. Because when
you hear him talk, he's just smiling and happy, go lucky.
I saw him at one of the Stars playoff games
and he was taking pictures and just like happy to

(28:24):
be here. And he was talking on an interview yesterday
that he's really into legos.

Speaker 7 (28:29):
Did you hear that interview?

Speaker 5 (28:30):
And he said he's got to be careful because he
gets so into it. If he buys a box that
you know, you can build dinosaurs and all these things.
If he buys one, he has to be careful when
he starts it and has to plan his time around it,
because he said that he has started him at eight
o'clock and he has to finish whatever he starts and
he's been up till two in the morning and then

(28:52):
had to go lift at six.

Speaker 7 (28:53):
So he's just a fun guy, right.

Speaker 5 (28:55):
And then Tyler Smith, if you ever meet him, he's
just kind of like huh, you know.

Speaker 4 (29:00):
Yeah, but if you yeah, but if you see yeah,
like Tyler's nice, Tyler's nice, but don't don't don't miss
like he Tyler's nasty. Like he's in the sense of
like you you you're gonna respect Tyler right or he's
gonna put hands on you like you it's gonna be yeah,
you know, don't matter who you are on comedy rings,
you got you, you're gonna you're gonna respect me in

(29:21):
such a way or deal with it.

Speaker 7 (29:23):
And they're talking about you know, just we've got to
see it.

Speaker 5 (29:27):
But Guidon's work ethic and it sounds like he you know,
he sounds like he's loving football right now.

Speaker 7 (29:34):
We'll we'll see.

Speaker 4 (29:35):
He's had some good plays. He had something. He's had
some Tyler guy he plays in training camp right like,
he's had somewhere it's like, oh, we don't want to
see that again. But he's had he's had something. We're like, okay,
you compete it. That looked good. That was that was
a good rep right there. You're not leaning forward, you're
feeding your balance and with you your hands are there.
That kind stuff is there. But yeah, the part that
I do hate is that, you know, how long before

(29:56):
we get Micah back? Because the great test is right
going up against that dude every day. Yeah, Like that's
the test. That's the test for guy in and for
and for you know, when they line excuse me, but
they line michaeh up over the center, over the guard.
Now you have to deal with that situation like that's
the test. That's that's the test.

Speaker 1 (30:15):
I mean, part of that reason why you need him
in camp. Let's sign him, you know.

Speaker 4 (30:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (30:19):
Schottenheimer had a I don't know if you guys heard it.
I heard it when I was driving in but he
was on uh, you know, the fan the flagship station,
and he had a pretty good lengthy interview and that
he was talking about Tyler Guyton.

Speaker 7 (30:32):
He goes, I don't think people.

Speaker 5 (30:33):
Realize how hard it is to play as a rookie,
as as an offensive tackle. He he goes, I had
a guy that we drafted first round or named the
Brickishaws and.

Speaker 7 (30:47):
New York is my thing. Weird.

Speaker 1 (30:48):
I'm down a minute, think it's uh.

Speaker 7 (30:51):
And he said they were ready to give up on
him after the first year.

Speaker 5 (30:53):
They were like this dude can't play, like he's you know,
not good, Like they were looking to go in a
different direction. He said, now he's the Jets Hall of
Fame and he's like so he's like, you know, he's
doing all the right things. He's working so you know,
let's let's see what happens. You know. Encouraged, So Jesse
when we come back, ask Kurt jumped in. I want
to know what you've heard this week so far that's

(31:16):

that that you want to talk about when we come back,

Speaker 7 (37:50):
We made yeah.

Speaker 1 (37:52):
Jesse.

Speaker 5 (37:52):
Jesse got the email two weeks ago. He screenshot and
sent it to the like we finally made made it.

Speaker 7 (37:59):
Let's go.

Speaker 3 (38:00):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (38:00):
I don't know who approved that that was that they
didn't think that went through.

Speaker 7 (38:03):
It's gonna be fun.

Speaker 5 (38:04):
Yeah, we'll have a blast. So all right, Jesse, all
the cool stuff that's been circulating this week out of camp,
what are what are some things that you want to
dive into for the last time?

Speaker 4 (38:12):
Yeah, man, it's been here a ton of good things
about the rookie second round pick Donovan as a ROKU.
He has been the darling of camp right now. And
we talked a lot about Hey, you know what, City
Lamb has a running mate, right he got George Pickens
in here. Now he has a guy. He looked at
over there and said, you know, I got a guy
who's on that on that same plane. And I know
that he's not in camp right now, but it looks

(38:35):
like the cowboys have found Michael Parsons are running me
and does and Donovant as a ROCKU and and the
things that stick out about him from the things that
I've seen the people that I've talked to, is his speed.
He's not a big guy, right, six', two about two
hundred and fifty, pounds but his get off and that's
the part that you, know what Makes micah special Because

(38:57):
mike's not a big, guy not a super strong. Guy
but what happens is is that that's get off and
that speed gets up on you so fast it catches
offensive linemen in the in their, kick catches them off.
Balance and so now Once i'm up on you AND
i go to give you that that that stiff arm
into the, chest it throws you off balance and now
you're off balance your, Reaching you're trying to grab, me

(39:19):
and all of a, sudden now you see, Me now you.
Don't And donovan as a roc who has been, showing
showcasing that all through uh through training camp in these
first couple of, days and they're they're even playing him
in the micro. Role so he's not just rushing off the.
Edge he he whooped up on Uh Tyler booker for
a play he, Got he got. Him what's what with a speed?

(39:39):
Player ran by? Him uh the other. Day so that's
a name that has really been having a good. Camp,
Uh donovan as A, Rocco and the thing that is
uniquely special about, Him i'll give you the. Pros the
good pros about Donad donovan as A rocco is he
came to the league with an assortment of. Moves most

(40:02):
of the, time when you get rookies that come into
the league first round, pick second round, picks third, ROUND
i don't know what round, is they don't come as
polished with. Moves you hear the term of you, know
tools in his, toolbox this meaning what what move do you?
Have because sometimes guys come in and they're, like, well,
Man i'm Just i'm just.

Speaker 1 (40:19):
Strong they don't need a bunch of moves in com
and you don't.

Speaker 4 (40:22):
Need a bunch of move a Call i'm better than.
You i'm just a better athlete than. You, now when
you come to this, level it's a little. Different the
guy across from you he good, too, right especially if
he's been there for a. While but as a rock
who's come in come in with the speed of power,
move the spin, moves the, dip the, rips the grabbing,
pools the good hand. Movement so to have a guy
who's come in with some pretty polished moves, already, now

(40:46):
he'll still refine, them he'll still add more to, them
he'll still polish them. Up but to have a lot
of those to go into the bag with and not
be a one trick. Pony that's that says a lot
about who he is as a player and his development
At boston coll so that that bowls well for The. Cowboys,
now the con is is that and this is not
really a fault To, donovan more of a fault to

(41:10):
the the pieces that are around. Him donovan is a.
Specialist he's a he's a past rush. Specialist he's not.

Speaker 1 (41:19):
At every persons built the same field at the same
time on.

Speaker 4 (41:23):
Third, down on third and, eight third and seven thirty, six,
sure third and, One, no, hey get some water right, quick,
buddy because you just you just. Can't and and and
the part that's no fault to him is is how
DO i get the specialists to perform in the special

(41:44):
moments because if we're constantly in third, Ones donovan has no.
NEED i don't have no need For. Donovan he can't
stop the run not you, KNOW i don't want three
hundred and thirty pound guys running at him every single
time he's two hundred and fifty. Pounds that will where
that will where where's mikeel? Out it's gonna wear him out.
Too so the no fault to him is that The

(42:06):
cowboys still haven't found an answer to stop the. Run
and unless The cowboys plan on scoring forty points a, game,
well the defense now has to the ability to go
rush The pats because they can't run because the other
team's down fourteen. Points that's gonna be the big thing
when it comes To donovan and him showcasing what we're

(42:26):
seeing early on in training camp is that he has
to come off the field on the running.

Speaker 5 (42:31):
Down that's a Good do you do teams ever do?
That do they ever.

Speaker 7 (42:37):
Look at their?

Speaker 5 (42:38):
Personnel do coaches ever look at their personnel and, go
you know, what we got two really special. Guys let's
gear our offense to start, quick score fast to where
we're not in run situations and we can utilize these.

Speaker 7 (42:54):
Guys or do you just does the game not allow
you to? Dictate how you?

Speaker 4 (42:58):
Know every offense wants to score fast and score a.
Lot that is Not i'll tell you right. Now you
can if you can find. Me if you can find
me AND i, don't if you fans can find me
one offensive, COORDINATOR i just need. ONE i just need one.

Speaker 7 (43:12):
And want to hit a home run every.

Speaker 5 (43:13):
Play if they, you.

Speaker 4 (43:14):
If you find me one offensive coordinator that designs a
play and isn't a? Touchdown you can't find.

Speaker 5 (43:21):
One but but isn't there aren't there different tempos you
can play? With you, know you, know you, know you
you got you're built around the, Run, yes if you
is it possible to look at your defense and go
if we can put points up, Quick let's try to
come out passing every. Game let's try to do this
to make them play from behind to where you're face like.

Speaker 4 (43:42):
That, no, no, absolutely and teams strategy like that at, times,
Right but that doesn't work when you play the really
really really good, teams.

Speaker 5 (43:51):
Or you don't have the personnel to do, that.

Speaker 4 (43:53):
Or you have the personal to do. It because at some,
point and we just we've all been around this game
for a. While january football doesn't look like football In september,
now it just.

Speaker 5 (44:04):
Doesn't it just. Doesn't it's like THE. Nba you watch
it all season and all of a, sudden it's like
that dude can play, defense, Right, YEAH i got.

Speaker 11 (44:13):
It.

Speaker 4 (44:13):
Yeah and so that's and that's where you have to
gear yourself up. To, yes, yes when the right sea
of games are, important but do you have what it
takes to win The December january, games because that looks.
Different and for, Years i've been a part of this
organization for fifteen plus. Years we get The january and

(44:33):
teams just, go, oh.

Speaker 7 (44:37):
We'll just run.

Speaker 5 (44:38):
It we'll just yeah, right not only run, it but
let's just run it right up the, middle yeah right.

Speaker 4 (44:44):
Right and it's it's it's in those moments in that
third and that fourth quarter where they do it, five,
six seven times in a row.

Speaker 14 (44:54):
And it's first, down seven, yards first, down six, yards first.
Down that's, backbreaking that's, demoralizing that is tail, talking and
there's nothing you can do about.

Speaker 4 (45:04):
It that's When, God i'll see you next, season, Buddy
i'll see you next, season because this is. Over And
So donovan as A RockA is a name that that
a lot of people have been talking. ABOUT i talked
to on one of my, many many many jobs and
podcasts THAT i. DO i talked To James slater yesterday

(45:25):
And jane was talking About James slader of THE Nfl,
network reporter of THE Nfl, network and she talked about
now she had a commentation With Brian schottenheimer and he
raved Over Jake ferguson and he, said he really she,
said he said that he really feels like that this
is going to be a breakout year For Jake, ferguson
that he's going to be he he is going to
be THAT x factor in the offense between the two

(45:48):
other stars In Ceedee lamb And George George Pickens. Uh
and so that's that's that's interesting to. Hear it's a
good thing to. Hear but they're really really high and
excited about What Jake ferguson can. Bring he hasn't had
many like highlight plays so far in training. Camp but
again it's it's day.

Speaker 5 (46:06):
Three DID i hear in one Of schottenheimer's interviews he
said they're really big on cross, training like getting guys
to learn multiple positions because they want to throw different
a lot of different looks and put them in different.
Situations and DID i hear him say that there they
cross trained Awesome richards to play some tight.

Speaker 7 (46:24):
END i THINK i heard him saying, that, YES i
missed that.

Speaker 5 (46:29):
One cool he said, that you know they're teaching you, know,
turping how to play some running back and things like,
that and they want everybody to know more than one.
Position And i'm pretty sure. That he, said we got.
Awesome you, know he's. Alive he, said he's. Alignman but
we were cross training, him you, know at tight, end
AND i was, like he, goes we you, know we
get loooned in there.

Speaker 7 (46:49):
To talk to, him And i'm, like DID i hear?

Speaker 3 (46:51):

no you you, were you, know drinking and driving, whoa
WHICH i would never, do thank. You, yeah he's just
not don't condone. That BUT i was, LIKE i need
somebody to check check. Me yeah that was, that checked

Speaker 7 (47:08):
I would Never.

Speaker 1 (47:11):
This Is.

Speaker 4 (47:13):
Sadi also talked, about NOW i did hear this part
From shotty talked about you, know, hey we're gonna run
a wildcat and and and.

Speaker 3 (47:23):
AND i don't.

Speaker 4 (47:23):
KNOW i don't know. THAT i don't. Know, NO i
don't think it was a. Bluff BUT i don't know
IF i like that or. Not with Well we're on
the street From Brian, broadus friend of the, show uh
that there may be running the wildcat With Cavante.

Speaker 5 (47:43):
Turpin interesting as quarterback as the quarterback look over the offensive.
LINE i don't know in in that like just to
throw away, play like does it ever work or is
it just a play that you're, like maybe we'll break
one and then the odds are like one in every
five hundred times it turns out to where you actually gain.

Speaker 4 (48:06):
Yardage see the thing and maybe this is like it it's,
fun but it's like this is pessimist, suggests.

Speaker 7 (48:13):
Like if you don't need to do that.

Speaker 4 (48:15):
One, yes but, two get good, enough like get good
at the stuff that you need to get good. At
like you're not good enough, yet like you haven't Established
no one's scared of anything.

Speaker 7 (48:27):
You do, Nothing so why throw this in?

Speaker 4 (48:29):
There that's What i'm. Saying don't don't practice, gimmicks be
really good at the stuff that you want to be
good at, first like and then throw the wrinkles in,
there LIKE i JUST i don't want to talk ABOUT
i don't day, TWO i traded. DAY i don't want
to hear about a.

Speaker 7 (48:44):
WALK i.

Speaker 4 (48:45):
DON'T i don't want. To you don't know if your
offensive line can block yet that is still a question.
Mark yes we know What Tyler smith. Is i'm, Confident
i'm SUPER i AM i can lay them bhat the
pillow at, night And i'm good With Tyler. SMITH i

but but you know What i'm, saying it's a lot
of question. Mark so you need to be talking About nate.

Speaker 5 (49:18):
Three it's fun to talk about as a as a
as someone who really wants to see this team While
i'm still a part of, it at least go to
a Super bowl and win.

Speaker 7 (49:28):
One i'm with. YOU i don't need to be. HERE
i don't need to.

Speaker 4 (49:34):
Know tell tell me that you're gonna average four point,
seven four point eighty five yards to. Carry tell me.
That tell me that without The, wildcat, right because that's
what makes The wildcat. Unique IF i can run the,
ball If i'm doing that really, well AND i KNOW
i can just plow jokers, over cool run The. Wildcat
but you don't. Know you don't know what your offensive line,

(49:54):
Is so don't start giving me the gimmicky stuff when
you don't have the base of.

Speaker 7 (49:58):
LEFTDOWN i hope.

Speaker 5 (49:59):
IT i hope it, work AND i hope it Is Cavante,
turpin because what a. Story three years ago he was
playing in what the XFL u s FL u s
fl didn't even know if he was gonna be in the,
league wound up being a great return, specialist got a great,
contract and here he is running the, wildcat just slinging
