Speaker 3 (00:45):
How many years has it been for you now at
this club?
Speaker 5 (00:47):
Uh?
Speaker 4 (00:48):
This is my twenty seventh season.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
Twenty seven seasons.
Speaker 4 (00:52):
Yep.
Speaker 6 (00:52):
You just passed five hundred games last year, right, yeah, yeah,
like five thirty five forty.
Speaker 4 (00:56):
It's awesome.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
Have you seen the NFC?
Speaker 6 (00:59):
No, No, I haven't seen at all. So like when
people say you've seen it all, I was like, Nope,
I haven't seen anc championship game or tie. I don't want.
I don't want to see the tie. But I haven't
seen a tie preseason. Maybe maybe no, but a real,
like a real tie where you're like, no.
Speaker 7 (01:16):
You say that it's gonna happen on I don't know
what I would.
Speaker 4 (01:18):
Feel about that.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
I would feel like a loss. They tie the Giants
on Sunday, that would feel.
Speaker 6 (01:25):
Like like Thursday, where that feel like it's like last Thursday, with.
Speaker 3 (01:29):
The way they played Nick. It would happen because they
should have won that football game, right right, It hurts.
They should have won that football That was that was
there for the taking. It was every It was everything
that you wanted in a football game in terms of
all right, we're going to give you the ball with
three minutes to go, dak ceed go go go win this,
get it, go get it, and and then to see
the opportunities there to win it that those That was
(01:51):
the kind of thing. And we talked a little bit
about the media. Actually, I can't take any moral victory
out of it because we've watched this for too many, too
many years now with the Cowboys, you know, it's at
some point in time, it's trying to get it done.
That was what Jimmy Johnson talked about. I remember when
he's like, it's like the year they went to go
to Super Bowl and He's like, you know what it
was supposed to be here it goes again. You've seen
the video. He's like, nope, you guys falk through it. Yeah,
(02:12):
and it's just like that's what that's what they got.
You got to stop getting close and finish close the show.
That's really think close the show. And I think about
two teams it probably felt really like, dang it, we
were right there at the Again, it's got to be
the Cowboys and the Ravens, Like, you know, you were,
you were where you needed to be.
Speaker 4 (02:28):
Now Ravens is worst one Jets.
Speaker 7 (02:32):
We talking about JJ McCarthy being NFC Offensive Player of
the Week. By the way, what are we doing? What
is going on around here?
Speaker 3 (02:37):
I'm sure Gary Myers made sure that here.
Speaker 4 (02:39):
The week player of the week.
Speaker 7 (02:40):
One hundred and forty three yards that's how he passing yards.
He yet in that game and threw a pick six
to Naseean right at defensive back that this team let
go yeah right, yeah, you.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
Know how I was. I wasn't watching the game and
I just saw that they come up on my feet
and said, nah, wait wait.
Speaker 4 (02:54):
A minute too. I was like, okay, hold on, Nashan, right,
I know him. I can't. I know, I know him.
I know this weird spelling, I know this. What is this?
Speaker 6 (03:03):
My first thought was a cornerback from Texas Longhorns way
back in the day, and I can't even remember that's
who I was thinking, like way back but yeah, okay, yes,
I was like, wait, no, you know right.
Speaker 3 (03:18):
Things things we hadn't seen before.
Speaker 6 (03:21):
There's a lot of like there's about six or seven
different storylines from former draft picks, like in the last week,
you know, I mean you think about like even the
Panthers picked up a couple of guys.
Speaker 4 (03:32):
Duce Vaughn is now with the Broncos. I mean, you know, of.
Speaker 6 (03:35):
Course, a lot of a lot of guys that other teams,
you know, debuting Seattle and ye Jacksonville had good good days.
Green Bay there was a guy in Green Bay.
Speaker 4 (03:44):
He had a sack.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
I'll be rooting for. I will be I mean, it's
one of those situations where it didn't work out here.
But we know, especially watching it, haven't we watched him.
It can't say he can play football. He can play football,
and I think he's going to a coach who we'll
find something at him. Sean Payton.
Speaker 4 (04:02):
That's right.
Speaker 6 (04:02):
I mean, I guess I didn't even think about it.
I didn't even think about that connection with a not
a connection, but Sprolls writings right.
Speaker 4 (04:11):
But I don't know. I feel like he had chances here.
I do.
Speaker 6 (04:15):
I mean, I don't feel like if he goes somewhere else,
I don't think it's gonna I think it'll be like
Jimmy Smith, if he has that gravy. I mean, it's like, Okay,
you had chances, but you didn't do it here. You
had to grow up on your own.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
Here's my count for him. I think of Danny Amadol.
You know, we saw Danny Amadola come out here with
the Cowboys and he was calling. He's all, ox Nard
look good, got the preseason game fumbling and you know,
couldn't make it work, and they let him go and
Danny goes to the Rams, catches on, has a good time,
you know, good time run there and then ends up
when you with Belichick and company wins the Super Bowl,
(04:46):
And I just think of like, it can happen this way,
It can happen this way.
Speaker 4 (04:50):
True, No one, No one's really faulting the Cowboys for
that one.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
No, No, he did not. You know, here's the thing.
He didn't earn a roster spot. Okay, he had. He
looked good in the OTA's and looked good good in
training camp practices, but he did not perform in preseason
games win it counted, and they let him go. There
were other players who earned a spot, but this comes.
You know, the Rams weren't a really good team when
he got there, so he got opportunities to play, build
himself and made himself into a player.
Speaker 7 (05:14):
Yeah, and Forduce, I think it was a mix of
bad luck, bad happenstance whenever he got into games and
there was a backup offensive line that he was having
to run behind, and then a mix of bad performances
on his own. And I think the bad luck comes
into play with he had turping in front of him,
so he was never going to find special teams value.
And the special teams value is so important if you're
trying to be that RB three and.
Speaker 3 (05:35):
Stay right there a good buddy Mindela torm MCNELI always say,
if two of us are the same, one of us
is not needed.
Speaker 7 (05:40):
Yeah, yeah, and that.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
Was the case with Turpin here, two of us are
the same, one of us not needed. So we're not.
You're not gonna keep two little dudes out here. They're
not gonna do it. They did it for a little bit,
but at a certain point in time, somebody was gonna
have to be there, and they paid Turp and so
they went a different direction. That's why I say I
hope he does well. I think he can play get
some opportunities. We've seen this happen before.
Speaker 6 (05:59):
It's funny that you say that because and they're both here.
That's fine, But I kind of wonder, like with the
Bass and Hoffman, you know, I'm like, you got two
guys backups, both can play guard, both can play sitter.
Speaker 4 (06:11):
I kind of wonder like how long. Yeah, it's gonna be.
Speaker 6 (06:13):
I mean, it's good to have those guys, you know,
as backups, but they do kind of seem like they
could be the same player.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
When you find that one player, like Jayden Blue, when
you find in one player said he's clearly has that,
then that that's what'll make the separation go.
Speaker 6 (06:27):
But any podcasts ever have mentioning of TJ Bass before Dak,
I mean, has that ever happened?
Speaker 7 (06:34):
Maybe up in Eugene.
Speaker 3 (06:36):
Yeah, it's it's Giants Week. Dak Giants. I mean, you
know what else we say. I mean, twenty sixteen was
the last time he lost to the New York Giants,
and Nick, you and I were there. It was a
game in East Ruththerford, and.
Speaker 6 (06:51):
I remember that before the pre game it was just
like it just out of nowhere, it just started to snow.
I don't think it was even expected. You just game weird.
Speaker 5 (07:00):
It was.
Speaker 4 (07:01):
It was a weird one.
Speaker 6 (07:02):
But yeah, the Giants, they were that's when they had
what snacks Harrison in the middle and and maybe the
guy that was here.
Speaker 4 (07:12):
I'm trying to Hankins.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
I think Hank it was a it was a weird game,
and you know they had that long winning streaky and
it just kind of just happened and Dak didn't have
a great game. But it wasn't his fault. But I'll
always remember Archer asking Jason Garrett, why didn't he put
in Romo like huh, Like they've been on a run here, Todd.
This it wasn't the fault of the quarterback. Like, it
(07:36):
wasn't his fault. He didn't lose the game. He was
a part of it, but he wasn't the reason.
Speaker 6 (07:40):
Archer asked, No, I wouldn't think that one, but but
I you know, once it got later in the season.
I mean, he can easy to go back and look
at that now.
Speaker 3 (07:52):
But but when's the last time this team has been
on a streak like that. I hadn't had the game notes,
I didn't bring him, but just it's been it's been
a minute since they've I.
Speaker 4 (08:00):
Mean ten and like it was ten one.
Speaker 3 (08:02):
Dude, this is h oh.
Speaker 6 (08:05):
I would that ninety three honest, like after him it
came back. Maybe I don't even know that now. I
wouldn't even that much.
Speaker 3 (08:12):
Well, I meant to say it against one team. Oh,
I'm sorry, one team, Yeah, because some way had begat
the Giants. I mean, he said, Dak, that's on an
incredible run. He did start all these but you know,
just his run against the Giants. I hadn't lost in
twenty sixteen, and it was seven eight in a row.
There they had been. They own them. Basically this point
I was telling somebody the other day, Dak against the
Giants is what Aaron Rodgers was when he was with
(08:32):
the Packers against the Bears. You know, owned him, owned him, period.
Speaker 6 (08:36):
So that we looked at that stat, there's it's only
happened three times where thirteen games or more and it's
and it's Brady against the Bills, and it was Bob
Greasy and the Dolphins against the Bills. Wow, as far
as one team against one opponent and.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
A guy just smoking him, it was just like, okay,
just just write it down here. Yeah, it was. It's
a pretty incredible streak. And do you, either one of
you worry about an overconfidence in this game.
Speaker 7 (09:05):
I wouldn't say so. I think there's a healthy amount
of chip on their shoulder going into this one, coming
off that loss in Week one. From the time that
you answer, you ask questions to Schottenheimer, you ask questions
to even some of the guys in the locker room today.
They understand the dominance that they've had over the Giants
in the last few years, but it's not lost on
them that this is a completely different year, it's completely
different environment. You got to look at it in a vacuum.
(09:27):
It's one one game.
Speaker 6 (09:28):
Their head coach doesn't have a win, and I mean
he knows that, and you know, I think that that's
a big deal. And I think beating Philadelphia last Thursday,
that's you could definitely see that Hey, this is something
to think about, you know, after a big win and
now of course they got the Giants coming in that
could be a problem. But I think the fact that
they still lost going oh into would be so problematic.
Speaker 4 (09:48):
I don't see it.
Speaker 6 (09:50):
I think that's that's valid, But I just can't imagine
this team being overconfident for you know him one in
a while.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
In two and oh and two in the division.
Speaker 4 (10:00):
Somebody's gonna do it, right, Yeah, somebody.
Speaker 3 (10:03):
And then I'm looking towards also just next week, where
here are the Bears, who got who lost the game
that they wear in control up on Monday night at
home against Minnesota, they got to face the Lions. You know,
both of those teams are are oh to one. So
it's a division game there that the Cowboys could be
in a situation where they go to Chicago and the
Bears could be oh and oh and two at home.
(10:25):
And we've covered the league long enough to know a
team that is oh and two at home in that thirdy,
they're gonna bring everything they have because you oh and three,
basically you're you're really done in terms of trying to
make the playoffs. Here going three. So these next two
weeks for the Cowboys to me him, these are critical
games that they need to make sure they.
Speaker 6 (10:44):
Get somebody and somebody with in the NFC North that
Bears or the Lions is gonna be ohing tow m hm.
You know, same with Cowboys and Giants. And then the
difference is that you know, Cowboys one of these teams,
Cowboys and Giants. But if the Cowboys lose them, mean,
Scheinenheimer will be coaching in week three.
Speaker 7 (11:00):
But I don't think Dave Ball would get fired.
Speaker 4 (11:02):
I don't know.
Speaker 7 (11:03):
I mean it would be it wouldn't put it past it.
Speaker 6 (11:05):
Wasn't it pretty close to just come back. I mean
I was kind of surprised.
Speaker 7 (11:09):
It's it's never good when your star receiver is beefing
with your head coach in week one. I think I
said it yesterday. That's a never good thing, never a
good thing.
Speaker 3 (11:15):
Before I would fire day Ball. I fire that general
man with Joe Shane.
Speaker 4 (11:19):
Yeah, because I mean the end of the day, Barkley
he was good.
Speaker 7 (11:24):
And look, Daniel Jones, I do, like, you know, I
forgot about who's this dude? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (11:29):
I mean so so I had I had a former
Ranger general manaer John Daniels text me, John's a big
he's a big Giants guy, and he was frustrated. Sorry
to him, and and I just and I joked him.
I said, for all the Greek Nico Harrison gets, I've said,
nobody should be getting it more than Joe Shane, the
owner told you on TV, let's not watch this guy
go to Philly. Oh no, no, we're good. No, no,
(11:51):
I hear the Bears are gonna sign it. So he
goes to Philly, leads the league in rushing Offensive Player
of the Year, they win the Super Bowl. I mean
at least Luca and company went out in five games.
Speaker 6 (12:04):
It's like he couldn't get the record here. But let's
let's hold him back and see if we win the
Super Bowl, right right, you know.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
For for team purposes, we're not going to let him
get the record here. And so when I think about
day Ball, and we know how the Giants work, The
Giants are a general manager run organization all the way
going back to when George Young was there, when Bill
Parcells was the head coach. I mean, they the GM
is going to run that organization. And so, uh, day
Ball as the head coach, you can only do so much.
You have to work with what you're giving here. But
(12:31):
to see what they're doing here. And Gary Myers, long
time beat writer up there and columnists in New York
had he stumped hard for JJ McCarthy. It's like they
need to get a quarterback, but they took neighbors, and
he's like they made a mistake. And here it is
Game one. First half. Gary was quiet. It's had Gary, Gary,
Gary put it all out there. But you just look
(12:51):
at JJ McCarthy and just say, okay, here the Giants.
The old dude from from miss Jackson Dart, I.
Speaker 4 (12:59):
Said, you know right, I mean if you're the Giants.
Speaker 7 (13:02):
Yeah, it provides more unknown than I think what Russell
Wilson would bring to the table. But this early, with
that offensive line, it's it can't be worse than Russ
right now. Russ hasn't lookedod in two and a half years,
let's be honest, and you're going up against a head
coach that knows him really well. I don't know. There
was nothing in Week one that said yeah, Russ. No,
the preseason was great from Jackson Dart. I liked what
(13:23):
I saw from him. I would throw him out there
and try to get that next era started as soon
as possible. They're only delaying the inevitable. They're delaying the inevitable.
Speaker 4 (13:31):
Great arm talent. I know that. I mean he may Yeah,
he's gonna throw some picks, so probably, but he can
definitely sling it.
Speaker 7 (13:37):
So it's like, would you rather go five and twelve
with Russell Wilson as your quarterback the whole year or
five and twelve with Jackson Dart and he gets these
reps and he can kind of lead you into this
next era with a new head coach and a new
GM with a season under his belt. So that's how
I feel.
Speaker 3 (13:48):
About so So, Mike, my point counterpoint to that is
if the offensive line is bad, are you're sending a
guy out here to just get bludgeoned and beat up
every week?
Speaker 7 (13:57):
Yah, he's a rookie, he'll be all right. They did
it Williams.
Speaker 3 (14:01):
Yeah, I mean, how's that worked out?
Speaker 7 (14:03):
Exactly? J. J.
Speaker 3 (14:04):
McCarthy comes in.
Speaker 6 (14:06):
And you got to be mentally tough to do it
because because there's you see sometimes you see like didn't
Peyton Manning go three and thirteen? Troy Eightman went one
to fifteen?
Speaker 4 (14:15):
But zero? Yeah?
Speaker 6 (14:17):
Yeah, But there's there's there's others, you know, I just
immediately think of like an Achilles Smith or somebody maybe
not good enough to handle that, and and then or
JaMarcus or you know, or somebody like that. Where so
it is, there's there's cases to be made for both sides.
But I think I think they're gonna probably ease him
into it.
Speaker 3 (14:37):
That's that's just my thing. I mean, so Peyton Manning,
you go back, you know, he was a starter right
out of the gate. He was the guy, and Indianapolis
is going to show that town is gonna give you
a little great New York's a little different. Yeah, true,
that's a that's a hard place to to to to go.
And even Eli, remember Eli was not the starter when
(14:57):
he got there, despite being the one pick they had
Kurt Warner. Then eventually, you know, he started to be
that guy, which is what I wonder if they're gonna
do that. But man, it's just it's just so hard
as a quarterback when you just don't have good line play,
which I go back to the general manager before I
fired a head coach. They have not fixed this thing.
Speaker 6 (15:16):
There, and they tried, I mean, the first round picks
and they just haven't been in the good. You know,
I always think of the Giants when the Cowboys drafted
someone in the first round, because you typically think, all right, well,
you know he's gonna be good, because you know, you
get this guy, Travis Frederick ar he's.
Speaker 4 (15:32):
Gonna be good, or Martin or now and Tyler Smith.
Speaker 3 (15:36):
They drafted Andrew Thomas because remember Jason Garrett was there
as the offensive coordinator when he left the Cowboys, and
they specifically got Andrew Thomas out of Georgia, and there
were the comps of like, hey, this could be a
Tyrann Smith like guy, you know, very tall, lean offensive
tackle who could move. It just never worked out. It's
(15:57):
never worked out. But that's my that is always just
my fear trying to throw a young quarterback out here.
You got no O line, you don't even a good
running back. You know, sat Kwan Barkley helped, even though
Daniel Jones still wasn't getting it done. I mean he
at least helped. You Look at this thing. Now, there's
no O line, bad run game. What you got? See
(16:17):
your out here? Who can play? He out there? Look
at the code like crazy, Just look at this thing.
Joe Shane outside of the defensive line. This, this is
a bad.
Speaker 7 (16:26):
Outfit, even a defensive line to have all that talent
up front, they can't get home and they haven't been
able to get home for a couple of years now,
and it makes no sense because they have way too
much talent to do.
Speaker 2 (16:35):
So.
Speaker 6 (16:35):
They had what three sacks in the game on Daniels
on Daniels, Yeah, I mean I saw Burns with two
and then the other two guys split one.
Speaker 7 (16:43):
But which is very encouraging considering last year. I mean,
it felt like they were getting in the backfield but
couldn't get home. And that's just like, you can't do
that with all that talent.
Speaker 4 (16:49):
Like the first half of the Cowboys.
Speaker 7 (16:51):
First hat Man remind me of that one.
Speaker 6 (16:53):
Cowboys Eagles, Okay, seven possessions seven getting.
Speaker 4 (16:57):
Back there exactly, you know.
Speaker 6 (16:58):
And so all this talk of well they were getting pressure,
but that pressure led to Jalen Hurts saying, well, I
better just take off and run, you know.
Speaker 4 (17:05):
So, yeah, does that count as a pressure? I bet
it does.
Speaker 6 (17:08):
I bet they count that as a pressure, especially when
you you know, make a trade the way they do
and they're trying to make sure that everyone knows they
had pressure still, but if the pressure led to a
fourteen yard touchdown run by Hurts, I mean, yeah, did.
Speaker 4 (17:20):
That help you? Maybe you just sit in the pocket
and let them let him try to throw it.
Speaker 3 (17:24):
Yeah, and he's just you know, he's a bowld MVP
talented guy. And I give them, I give them credit
for putting in an offense where hey, man, here's go
do what you do. And you know, over the weekend
what we saw between Hurts, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen just
guys who okay, man, I'm getting I'm getting ready to go,
get busy here. And it was very effective. And it's
what it's what they do in a league where you know,
(17:46):
for many years coaches are like, no, no, stay in
this pocket and we got some legs, get out there
and use it and it'll be And this is just
my opinion. Not having better linebacking play Allowed hurt the Cowboys.
You know, I mean, this is okay, you don't have
a guy and get out here, chase him down. It
could be a problem. So you know, next time they
see him, let's see how they do better. Not clearly
(18:07):
the second half the Cowboys defense was great, saying allowed
three points. But you know that that that that quarterbacks
challet and he's going he's gonna give Hurts. Is gonna
give a lot of people fits if you if you
don't have a good linebacking court you're GOODA gives some fits.
Speaker 6 (18:20):
They just have so many weapons where they can do whatever.
And like you know, you hear all the time about
the spy, but I don't think the Eagles would blink
an if you if you tried to put a spy
on him, I think they would. He'd stand in there
and he'd throw it to tight ends and running backs
that are running right past that spy and into open spots.
I mean, I just think they're just two talented You
can try it, but you know, I think teams have
(18:41):
tried that too.
Speaker 7 (18:42):
And the second level wasn't defending anything in the past
game anyway. So for me, I was just throw mareslia
Fell in there and have him lock down Jalen Hurts.
You know, if it gives up stuff in the past game,
it does, But only one completion happened more than ten
yards down the field in that game against the Cowboys defense.
I mean, that second level just got obliterated in the
run game and the pass game, and it's just I
don't know for me. And we talked about it yesterday.
Putting Marius lea foul in the game. I feel I
(19:04):
could have done so much for you but just didn't happen.
Speaker 3 (19:06):
And we talk about a spy, I always say, who's
the spy? Okay? You know, you just can't throw anybody
out there. I mean, a healthy tomorrow and overshow Okay,
there we go. Now now we're talking about a spot. Sure,
but it just so many people say that you know,
perhaps somebody who's that person? Because oh, by the way,
that quarterback pretty good.
Speaker 7 (19:24):
Lea Foul's athletic. Though, yeah, I think you can maximize it.
Speaker 6 (19:27):
I did too, And I mean I think you could say, well,
you could go safety, you know, you could. You could
say Marque's bell type of guy to maybe be just
as athletic, if not more. But aren't they just going
to run a guard And it ain't gonna be We've
seen this before where they just run guards and Adam
and all that. So it's not like, oh, there's a
spy out there. I have to play it this way.
That's that's what makes the Eagles so good, I think
(19:47):
for me, I'd like to I'd like to see another
game or two before I say, all right, linebackers or
this or that. I think the Eagles make linebackers look
really silly that they didn't. I mean, Michael Parts has
never looked that great against the against them either. I
thought they neutralized him pretty well. So we'll see, I
think as the time goes on. But yeah, I mean,
linebackers didn't look as good as what we saw them
(20:08):
looking training camp.
Speaker 3 (20:09):
Nick's not happy with Kenneth Murray.
Speaker 4 (20:11):
I'm not this one.
Speaker 6 (20:12):
Yeah, this, Nick is not happy with Kenneth Murray. Why
run run game discipline? It was all over the place.
Speaker 4 (20:18):
That's different.
Speaker 7 (20:20):
That one didn't help either. There was this one play
where they had Bland crashing down into the sea gap.
His responsibility was the B gap and Demon Clark was
supposed to crashing the opposing B gap and the lane
was right in front of him. He didn't even have
to adjust laterally, just run straight and he runs into
the sea gap with and he runs into Ron Bland
and then who gets a fifteen yard game? Will Shipley like,
(20:40):
what are we doing?
Speaker 5 (20:41):
You know?
Speaker 7 (20:42):
And so the run game discipline stuff from Kenneth Murray
it was really rough to see coming out of that
game and even finishing to a certain extent. There were
so many times Osa the Yizua, Kenny Clark were pushing
the backfield and then Kenneth Murray or even Dante Fowler
couldn't finish in the backfield. It's like, gosh, they need those,
they need those. That's why you invested so much in
that defensive and you're over the offseason.
Speaker 3 (21:01):
Got to close the show, all right, Let's get our

Nick Harris, I'm new. He scrugs, all right, mister Harris.
A little injury news.
Speaker 7 (23:53):
Possibly, Yeah, injury report coming out Deron Bland dealing with
a foot injury. He did not practice today. Still work
to dig more info on this, but sounds like Sundays
and Jeopardy right now.
Speaker 3 (24:04):
So okay, mister Diggs, Trayvon Diggs met with the media
today and uh so, yeah.
Speaker 4 (24:14):
Same injury. I mean had a foot right, he did deal.
Speaker 7 (24:17):
With a foot fracture last year, missed ten games. Uh,
it's still working to figure out some info here. I
was kind of digging in the last segment on this,
but it uh, yeah, it's not ideal. Man. This cornerback
room just cannot stay one hundred healthy. They get one
game a year and that's it. That's that's tough. But yeah,
working for working more toward figuring out what the final
result is on that.
Speaker 3 (24:39):
Chadwick or Elam just just briefly in the locker room,
and he was a guy that told me at OTA's like, hey, look,
if I get opportunity to just get out here and
make some places, he said he felt like I'll be fine,
and that that he didn't get that kind of opportunity
in Buffalo, and Buffalo gave up a whole bunch of
points on Sunday night.
Speaker 6 (24:58):
Well, I mean the Eagles didn make one of the
biggest plays of the game on him. I thought they're
down trying to get off the field. And Dotson wasn't
the one that you were worried about all the other
you know, not that he can't make a play, but
I mean, you know, it was fifty hard bombs, A
nice throw by her, beautiful throw.
Speaker 7 (25:15):
I thought it was good coverage. He could have been better, Yeah,
but it was a perfect throw.
Speaker 6 (25:17):
Yeah, it was a perfect throw, perfect catch, and that
that could have changed some things because you know the
cow it was at this point they had not stopped him.
Speaker 4 (25:25):
I still didn't.
Speaker 3 (25:26):
Yeah, I mean nobody stopped only the first half, second
half they were good. Only three points given up here.
So it'll be interesting to see what what cowboy defense
do we see on Sunday first half or second half
defense here?
Speaker 4 (25:36):
What cornerback do you see on Sunday?
Speaker 7 (25:38):
Yeah, what do you do if Bland doesn't play? Do
you throw Zion Choulderson in the slot? Do you throw
in Ready Steward even though he's only been here a
few weeks?
Speaker 3 (25:46):
What would you do?
Speaker 7 (25:47):
I would throw in Zion shoulders. I mean he's had
the experience in the system of the course of the
last few weeks. And I mean I saw what I
saw from him at camp. Granted I haven't really seen
anything from Stewart, so you're asking me and my knowledge,
I would throw a zion.
Speaker 6 (25:57):
Chain and he's on the practice squad, isn't. Yeah, I
mean he could elevate him, but Stewart and.
Speaker 7 (26:06):
Bridges, he's more of an outside So you have to
be Stewart or Childress. I if Bland can't go on
the slot.
Speaker 3 (26:12):
Speaking of defense, Clowney Avian Clowney made a little visit
to the Star today. Your thoughts, Nick, you.
Speaker 4 (26:26):
Went, I'm sorry, I didn't have eye contact there.
Speaker 6 (26:30):
It's usually a name only for me, but no, I
thought I was a little surprised, honestly, I surprised that
that had happened, that they they're meeting with him.
Speaker 4 (26:38):
But then you know, when you really look.
Speaker 6 (26:40):
At the situation, you're like, he shouldn't be, you know,
because obviously the connection he's had, he's been there shot
and however before and I think you know that they're
always looking at as a situation where you know, this
guy not only has been productive, but he's also a
good run stopper.
Speaker 4 (26:52):
Seems like he has been so.
Speaker 6 (26:54):
And he's also he's also pretty good at getting into
a system and fitting in. I mean to play six
different times, that means with six different teams. I mean
that's five other teams that are signing you. Now they're
also not keeping you. But you know there's different reasons
for that. But I think for what he's done, I
think it could be a good fit now. And then again,
there's got to be money issue talks. I mean, he
(27:16):
can't be This is not the first time. I'm sure
somebody's called his agent about having him play, So you
wonder what the hold up has been or what is
he actually looking for. But if it does, it seems
like it could be a good fit for him and
good fit for the Cowboys.
Speaker 3 (27:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (27:29):
Absolutely, the one question that I have. Well, actually, i'll
go back a little bit. You talk about it was
a surprise when you heard his name being connected with
a visit here, but then you start to connect the dots.
You see Schottenheimer's time with him in Seattle. You see
his experience with some of the defensive assistants as well,
and kind of understanding the places he's been and how
it makes sense here. The question I have is what
is that price tag going to be? Because he has
(27:50):
signed six veteran contracts, only two of them have been
for less than ten million dollars per year. The Cowboys
have only signed one ten million dollars per year Contracked
in the last fifteen years, and it was Brandon Carr.
So it's a will it be a situation where they
have to pull out the check book and will they
want to for a guy that you know was on
the street in week one? That's gonna be a big question.
But I think it would be worth it.
Speaker 6 (28:12):
When you say that you mean free agent guy, I
mean ten When you say ten million years.
Speaker 7 (28:15):
Outside free agent, outside free agent, outside free agents. Yeah,
so if it's seven, I think it would be worth it.
I mean, that's a plus run defender. It's a veteran
you would have that I think could start for you. You
wouldn't have to start Dante Fowler. I don't think danteate
Fowler is a starting defensive end. I think he's a
rotational pass rusher that you bring in to maximize his value.
Whereas Jadavian Clown. He can be that run defender on
(28:36):
early downs and he can also give you some pass
rush upside, and so I think it would be worth
the price at seven million. At ten million, I don't know.
That's that's a third of the cap space they have
available right now.
Speaker 3 (28:45):
So on my immediate thought process, we start talking about
numbers like that is okay?
Speaker 7 (28:49):
What are his options exactly?
Speaker 3 (28:50):
Yeah? And how many people are willing to try and
pay that tag? I mean, obviously at this age he's
trying to go where AI get paid. Heeds to trying
to win most likely money first and then you know
the other other portion of a second. But the wayte
caps are, there's a lot of people just can't get
in the game. If they want to get they got
to get him, and you get him cheap. And so
(29:11):
he's going to want to play, uh for a number.
I remember talking to Bart Scott and he just said,
a bunch of guys want to get me a million.
He says, here's my mind as a player, that's a
half million, right, thinking Texas, do I want to put
my body through all this for a half million? He's like, no,
I don't want to do it. So you know, kind
of talk what's what's the number that works for him
and who else can pay him, and then you kind
(29:32):
of try to meet meet there and find a comfort
level for yourself when you when you make a deal.
Speaker 6 (29:36):
And I think money has got to be the number
one factor just looking at his history. Yes, he hasn't
signed in places that that were you know, sniffing Super
Bowl banners.
Speaker 7 (29:46):
I mean like Ravens or Raven Okay, Ray signed for
two million.
Speaker 6 (29:50):
There difference, okay, but but I mean Tennessee and Cleveland
and some of the other I'm just saying that's got
to be the number one thing. But you know, you
also look at opportunity, like you come into here and
you look at the guys that they have, like can
I beat this guy out, this guy out, all of them?
You know, so a chance to start on a team
(30:11):
that looks you know, I don't know.
Speaker 4 (30:13):
What this team looks like. I think it's encouraging on
how they played.
Speaker 6 (30:17):
I know you said, you know earlier, you said you
don't believe in the moral victory and whatever. It only
I mean, it's only a moral victory.
Speaker 4 (30:25):
If you actually build on it. You know, I've seen it.
Speaker 6 (30:27):
I've seen it happen here before where they had a
moral victory I saw them walk off the field in
Tampa Bay, and that looked like they were upset, But
that also looked like we got something. And I saw
that the other night too. Now, that team in twenty
twenty one won five straight after that. If this team
goes out and wins five or four out of five
or you know, it's very winnable. I mean the Packers game,
(30:48):
we know that's there. But if they go out and
string some things together, then I think you can go
back and look at hey, they were encouraged, the morale
was high, and they were able to build.
Speaker 4 (30:57):
Off of it.
Speaker 6 (30:57):
I definitely believe in moral victories, but it won't be
one if you go out and don't don't play well.
Speaker 3 (31:03):
Here are your next five games, Giants, Bears, Packers, Jets, Panthers.
Speaker 7 (31:08):
You gotta go forward.
Speaker 4 (31:09):
One can go for and one there, I gotta go
for and one.
Speaker 7 (31:12):
It'd be a disappointment if he didn't.
Speaker 3 (31:13):
Yeah, with three of those games on the road. Bears, Jets,
Panthers road games.
Speaker 4 (31:19):
Which Panthers is not a road game.
Speaker 3 (31:25):
As a as a North Carolina a VIC, it's not
for either. I can not I can vouch for you
on that. That is that is a that is a that's.
Speaker 4 (31:32):
Love going to that place. One of my favorite stadiums
in the world.
Speaker 7 (31:35):
Now it is uh yeah, we were a couple of years.
Speaker 4 (31:40):
I forgot about that trip. We did have a trip there. Man,
I got my yeah chewed out because you.
Speaker 7 (31:48):
Later you chewed another.
Speaker 4 (31:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (31:51):
What a weekend.
Speaker 6 (31:51):
I just got arrested. Honestly, that is a true fact
at that stadium. Yeah, it was like I had two options.
One of them was to go to jail, so I
took the other one, which.
Speaker 3 (31:59):
Was the smart man.
Speaker 4 (32:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (32:00):
Yeah, you want to miss the team chart. You know,
you get home, Nick, you get home.

of a schedule. Heren to think about the quarterbacks that
(34:51):
are coming in here this year. I mean, this, this
is the real. I mean the one guy was looking
at well, you know it's JJ McCarthy. You know that's
change a good player. I mean, you know Russell. You
know Russe is here this weekend. He has won a
Super Bowl. Yes, you know so. I mean from a quarterback.
Speaker 4 (35:06):
Standpoint, this good one too.
Speaker 7 (35:09):
I was there.
Speaker 3 (35:13):
So I was there in Arizona. And so for the media,
they walk you down at a certain point time, like
if you're gonna go on the field, I gotta walk down.
So we're here in the tunnel. I had a radio
because the TV was very much delayed, and it felt
like I was back at that Tyson holy Field fight
when we were sitting way up there and when he
(35:34):
bit his year. The first I like in disbelief, and
the other people like, oh did I see? And I'm like,
I didn't see what I just saw? Did I same thing?
Russell throws the pick and the other people, oh, like
he didn't throw a pick, Diddy, you look up that
this fooling through a pit. First of all, what why
(35:54):
are you? Why why are we running the ball and
then like you throw it to who?
Speaker 2 (35:58):
You know?
Speaker 3 (35:59):
I didn't forgot the guy's name, Like this is if
if the season is on the line, we're not throwing it.
Speaker 4 (36:03):
To him Jenkins.
Speaker 3 (36:05):
No, No, Butler, Malcolm Butler made the pick. Come about
the receiver for Seattle. It's like, who is this? Who
are we throwing to? This wasn't this was a key player?
Were throw its like this is.
Speaker 4 (36:15):
The dude I don't know?
Speaker 3 (36:17):
And and knowing that, knowing that the previous play before
Lynch gets in the end zone, if Okun gets his block,
he doesn't get the block properly. So Heismith makes the tackle,
high Tower makes the tackle. It's just like, man, do
this one more time. It was awful.
Speaker 4 (36:34):
Not no, no, it was it was.
Speaker 3 (36:37):
It was. It was Bevil, Darrel Bevell.
Speaker 7 (36:41):
He's only been to a AFC Championship game back to
back years with Mark Sanchez, which that's an accomplishment and
its own right, m hmm.
Speaker 3 (36:47):
It's good defense. Though. Hey, look they they they they
were there in that one for a little bit. They
were there. Dennis Thurman was was on that staff and
he was like, man, he's you know, the one that
got away, one that got way so you know, and
they they let Mark throw the problem. I love when
(37:08):
you get coaches, especially after they're.
Speaker 6 (37:10):
Or is it supposed to go run right behind the guard,
right under the guard.
Speaker 3 (37:15):
I'll tell you the story out their because it's always
it's always fun when coaches are done with a team
and they go through.
Speaker 4 (37:21):
You know, you're gonna tell a story about the butt.
Speaker 3 (37:24):
Oh no, no, no, no, no, that was that was
That was different.
Speaker 4 (37:26):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (37:27):
I don't think I think Dennisip's gone by them with Rex. Yeah,
I think they're already going by then. So Clowney if
they signed him, considering it's it's Wednesday, now, would he
play this week?
Speaker 7 (37:40):
Depends how much game shape he's in. That would be
tough to do that. That's completely dependent on how much
of game shape he's in. That's a circumstantial basis, at
least for me.
Speaker 6 (37:49):
Yeah, I feel like he probably could. But I I
get the sense if I if I had to just
put money on it, which which I can't because I
took the gambling, you know, I know.
Speaker 4 (38:02):
Yeah, but that.
Speaker 7 (38:03):
Was the last one to turn it in. You can
ask Chrispine.
Speaker 4 (38:05):
I'm Wichita State shocker. I was I was second to
not shocked by that. Actually I am maybe. Uh no,
he actually was. He actually was. I love it. No,
I think I think he will sign. I think I
think they're going to bring him in.
Speaker 7 (38:21):
I mean, I just I think.
Speaker 4 (38:22):
I think. I think it will happen. When But what
does he play?
Speaker 3 (38:25):
Yeah, that's my thing. When when will he play?
Speaker 6 (38:27):
You don't need him this week, to be honest, Okay,
you know what you say that, And I was just thinking,
I really hate to sound cocky here, and I don't
think the Cowboys should do that. But when you're talking
about your corners and all that, Bland, should they should
they play? You know, should Bland play?
Speaker 4 (38:43):
You think yes? I mean I mean like do they
need them?
Speaker 3 (38:46):
Yes? Yeah, because the prospect of oh and two and
two division losses, you can't you can't chance anything. Yeah,
You've got you've got to get out here and and
win this game. Jerry Joe said, Yes, I was radio show.
I want to fly through the fan that don't look
for Mozzie Smith or Blue Jayden Blue to have a
have a jersey this week here and then ask of
(39:08):
the press conference today shot he said he's got to
be more consistent and that there were opportunities for three practices,
and he could do you buy it? Do you buy
that Mazzi's going to dress this week?
Speaker 7 (39:22):
I will say two of his best games in his
career off comeing against the Giants, and so you know
that's that's possibly something that they look at. But it
would a big determining factor would be this Bland Clowney mess.
They do have an open roster spot, so Clowney could
take that spot. But who who is inactivated as a
as a result. That's the question, because Winfrey took one
of those inactive spots last week, and so I think
(39:44):
he's already playing against numbers regardless.
Speaker 6 (39:47):
Mazzie Smith, Yes, and I guess you know it could
be Houston Ni could be one of these defensive ends.
I mean, if he is going to if Clowney does play.
But you're right, you're talking about Mozzie though, you still
got to figure that out. Let's less they're just gonna say,
all right, we've seen Toya, now we're gonna we're gonna
play Maze.
Speaker 4 (40:05):
Maybe yeah, you could pronounced Mazi.
Speaker 3 (40:11):
Looking at Mazi right now. There's still there's still more
of his story to write. Is he closer to Tristan
Hill disappointment or Taco Charlton disappointment.
Speaker 4 (40:23):
You have to you have to go first round pick right.
Speaker 7 (40:25):
I would go Hill only in the sense that Taco
Charlton always had the comparison of t J Watt hanging
above him. Mazzi Smith's never really had a comparison of
another defensive tackle above him, even though you could make
the case for Kobe Turner in La who was drafted
in the third round that year and has been awesome
filling in for Aaron Donald. But I would put it
in the Tristan Hill category just because the comparison that
Taco battled with TJ. That's that was always weighing over
(40:47):
the entire decision to draft him, and the bust factor,
if you will.
Speaker 3 (40:52):
It's been so it's just been disappointing because I just
I thought I had no issues when they drafted him. Okay,
they need to fix the run. It was an evident thing.
They need to fix the run. Okay, here's a guy
played at Michigan. Here they played that that team played
in the Fiesta Bowl that year.
Speaker 4 (41:11):
No no issues. I thought that I didn't either. I
thought that was a great pick.
Speaker 3 (41:15):
I mean, I said to myself, this this should be it.
But this is on the player. To me, in my opinion,
this is on the player. Where you know, man, you
got you gotta want this dang thing here. Man. Yeah,
and Nick, we've seen guys run through you, and I've
been here long enough, We've seen a couple of dudes
like they really love it. I remember when they got
Dwayne Goodrich out of Tennessee, who was an MVP defensive
(41:35):
MVP when in Tennessee won the national championship. What do
you good? He didn't love it. He liked being a cowboy.
He didn't love it. And it was just one of
the few times where I saw a guy that they drafted.
Speaker 4 (41:47):
Like, man, he was a try hard guy.
Speaker 3 (41:52):
Yeah, he was a try he just wasn't that good.
Speaker 6 (41:56):
I think there's a guy that they've drafted that's that's
you know, in the hall that didn't love football. So
I take a different stance on that didn't didn't love football.
It's it's you know, there's people that don't love their job,
but they they go to work every morning or every
day and they do what they have to do because
they're gonna do a great job. They don't necessarily love it,
(42:17):
So I think, to me, it just comes down to
are you doing all the things on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday?
Speaker 2 (42:23):
Are you?
Speaker 6 (42:23):
Are you? Are you watching film? Are you doing those
things necessary to make you better? And the thing about
Mazie that I'll say this is it's mostly on the player,
but he's had no consistency in his surroundings since he's
been here. His coaches have changed, his d line coach
has changed, his weight has changed, almost his position has changed.
(42:45):
Some of that is on him, but some of it's,
like I think, you know, you could make the same
thing for Micham Parsons too.
Speaker 4 (42:51):
All of that.
Speaker 6 (42:52):
He was in three different defenses and it seemed to
work out. But I think for Mazzi, I think he
needed a lot more consistency than he's than he's had.
And I'm not necessarily blaming the Cowboys for that. I'm
just saying I think it's unfortunate. He needed a little
bit more, a lot more consistency than what we've seen.
Speaker 3 (43:09):
Take the last word on this.
Speaker 7 (43:10):
Yeah, I think he was never done any favors by
the coaching staff or the change in staffs throughout the years.
But I also don't think he made any favors for himself.
I think he made his own bed.
Speaker 3 (43:18):
At the end of the day, you have to be
an active participant in your own rescues. What pat Riley
used to say, all right, hey, Nick Harris, appreciate you
doing it. Nick Heatman, thank you for filling it on. Second,
the originator none greater. Right here, I have new Scruggs.
This is the media mash. We'll talk to you a
row right here on Dallas Cowboys dot Com.
Speaker 1 (43:33):
This has been a production of Dallascowboys dot Com and
the Dallas Cowboys Football Club.
