Speaker 3 (00:29):
Oh what a beautiful tsunami free Wednesday morning. It is
here in Oxnard, California, at the corner a vineyard Inventura.
The sun is shining bright, the marine layer is lifting,
and we are ready for two days. Not two practices today,
(00:50):
but two practices the next two days. Right, that's right,
Cowboys will be back on the practice field after a
much deserved day off yesterday. Bill Jones, Mickey's Bagnola and
Nate Newton. And yes, we were afraid last night.
Speaker 4 (01:06):
Yes we were on tsunami Watch.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
We were.
Speaker 4 (01:09):
This team's still going to try to kill me.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
I swear to God, I tell you what. I can't
think of.
Speaker 5 (01:15):
A young lady who I was talking to ones at
a time. She came up kind of like in a panic.
You know, tsunami, this is tsunami that and you had
a phone out. I almost packed all of my clothes
and you started aheading it.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
In Arizona pro I'm getting.
Speaker 4 (01:31):
My daughter.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
Last night and my son in law, Sean. They were
sending me all this information about tsunamis and an eight
point eight earthquake, a tsunami it could reach up to
three miles from the coast, And so I was just
thanking God that I was on the fourth floor of
my hotel.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
Oh man, I don't trust nothing. I don't want to leave.
Speaker 4 (01:50):
Well, at least we were five miles from the coast,
so we were somewhat safe. But when I went up
after I talked to you, I went to the eighties
at the front desk at the hotel, and we're all
on the same spot, right, And I said, so, I said,
do we need to go up to the fourth floor,
and she goes, We'll let you know. We got we
(02:12):
we we got an alarm system. We're monitoring. I did.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
I did watch the Weather Channel.
Speaker 4 (02:17):
I did too. I watched CNN. I hadn't watched any
TV at night at all.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
The Weather Channel had Honolulu. Yes, that's what I was getting.
And so I was watching that all the way until
and watching the live cams of Oahu and Maui and
seeing what happened there. But anyway, all right, that's behind us.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
Now.
Speaker 3 (02:38):
I think I got school.
Speaker 4 (02:41):
Is it, they said, still got to be watching.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
Yeah, but the advisory for California has been lifted.
Speaker 4 (02:48):
Okay, so we're good. So my friends that live like
a block from the sand, they're they're okay, they don't
have to head out.
Speaker 3 (02:57):
Uh, don't rely on me for that, okay, Okay. Well,
well here we are, Yeah, here we are. It's uh,
we've had three straight day of practices going back to Saturday,
Sunday and Monday. Two of those in pads, a day
off now, two days in pads tomorrow, I mean today
(03:18):
and tomorrow, a day off on Friday, and then back
at it on Saturday. But in the meantime since we
last were here, there's been some news that has happened.
Speaker 4 (03:29):
Well, we've had some injuries, right, that's right. I'm trying
to remember.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
Two injuries within twenty four hours time were announced. Anyway,
at the end of let's let's start with Terry with
Tyler Guidon. Tyler Geydon and Terren Steele, by the way,
did return to practice on Monday.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
It's ye.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
Tyler Guidon at the end of practice on Monday, goes
down with an injury and a bone bruise, right knee sprain, knee.
Four to six weeks is the prognosis.
Speaker 4 (04:02):
And that was the best news because when he was
helped off the field, Nate, and you know, when he
was down and all the guys were around him on
a knee, which is never a good sign. And then
doctor Cooper, the Cowboys orthopedic surgeon, walked off with them
(04:22):
and they didn't send any medical intern off with them.
They set the main guy and the word was it
looks bad. And then the MRI came back and it
ended up being a bone bruise, a fractured bone at
the kneecap, and it was almost a relief. You know
(04:42):
when you hear four to six. We haven't hit August yet,
so there's four weeks right there before the season ever starts.
So yeah, I think they they head faked one.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
In fact, the season starts five weeks from tomorrow, five
weeks from I think I had figured out when I
was writing it was thirty six days.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
Away.
Speaker 4 (05:04):
So yeah, they got fortunate. And this is gonna give
opportunities some of those young guys, Nate, that you've been
wanting to see out there, Yes, to give them a chance.
Speaker 5 (05:16):
Yes, And unlike many other training camps, they have, they're
too deep at each position. So you know, I spoke
to one of the personnel guys and say, hey, I
guess this is Austin Richards opportunity.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
They say, no, it's Nate Thomas. Yes, opportunity around last
year one in camp.
Speaker 5 (05:35):
They're gonna stick with their two man ross and if
a guy goes down, they have a guy that comes
in behind them because they say they want to make
sure this thing stays highly competitive and everybody gets a
true chance here early in camp to show what you
can do. So we'll be looking at Nate Thomas. But
that's number seventy one at left tackle and still Austin
(05:58):
Richards is your second team right tackle. So uh, but
what I want to say before we covered the other
injuries is it's very very unfortunate.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
For got you. He uh needs training camp.
Speaker 5 (06:11):
We have a new offensive line coach, we have basically
a new system being put in, new techniques, and once again,
this kid is gonna miss a whole training camp. And
when you are trying to when you're coming from behind
the eight ball and.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
You've had soso uh year before.
Speaker 5 (06:30):
Uh, now you're trying to regain confidence, you're trying to
regain your technique and your aggressiveness.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
And and here we are. I feel bad for Tyler
guid Well.
Speaker 4 (06:39):
You you brought up Nate Thomas, and I was talking
to someone, uh that should know about the offensive line
and told me that this kid is gonna be good.
They they're they're high on Nate Thomas. So we'll see
how that plays out.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
The head coach brought him up unsolicited and his press
conferences in.
Speaker 4 (06:59):
This Yeah, and you know, I think we all assume
that when they went to second team it was gonna
be awesome Riches there, yes, but it was not. It
was Nate Thomas. They're using Austin Richards at guard, they're
using them at right tackle. Uh, they're sort of moving him,
moving him around everywhere.
Speaker 5 (07:21):
Nate Thomas, from what I understand, that is his position.
He's not They're not going to try to put him
at right tackle and they're not going to try to
put him at right guard. They want to see can
he get at one position and mature at that one
position and be the best he candidate left tackle?
Speaker 4 (07:41):
And I thought I thought Clayton Adams said an interesting
thing about uh, Tyler Geyton when somebody asked how he
was doing whatever, and he says, I usually reserve judgment
on a player's kind of ability future until they get
twenty starts under their belt. Yes, and so I thought
(08:01):
that was that gave you an idea of not overreacting
to somebody that does not have a lot of experience,
not only in the NFL but in college playing left tackle.
So he put it at twenty starts. I think he
had fourteen last year, if I remember correctly.
Speaker 6 (08:22):
And so.
Speaker 4 (08:24):
The chance to talk to the coordinators I thought was interesting. Yesterday,
I thought we got a lot of good stuff out
of not only Clayton Adams, but also Matt Eberfluse. I
didn't get to listen to Sorens and we had some
TV stuff to do at that time, but I thought
those two guys were really good. Why do I hear
these booms? There's something like.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
Mackey, you're what Bill Park what Bill Bars calls a
distractable player.
Speaker 4 (08:53):
Now I'm adding color to our broadcast. Here.
Speaker 2 (08:57):
You got all the color you need them here.
Speaker 3 (08:59):
Oh you know Nate Thomas. Nate out of Louisiana, Okay,
which he used to be called Louisiana Lafayette. Yes, and
he was a starter at left tackle in his college career,
started twelve games his senior year, his junior year, started
thirteen games for the Rage Occasions. Last year being a
(09:22):
seventh round draft pick, of course he was here in
camp who was placed on IR with a knee injury
in late August last year, and so last year was
spent on IR. It was basically a red shirt year,
which was what they expected even coming in to the
year after drafted in that sixty five, three hundred and
thirty pounds is what he has listed. And so throw
(09:47):
him out there and see what he can do.
Speaker 5 (09:49):
You know, and the way they do things, you know,
he'll get a lot of work. I mean, they run
a lot of plays. He gonna face Sam Williams Fowler,
He's gonna he's gonna face a lot of guys, a
lot of different styles, a lot of different so he'll
he'll get caught up to speed with a different looks
he would get from the defensive ends that are out there. So, uh,
(10:10):
let's give him opportunity to remind.
Speaker 4 (10:12):
Me last year, did he get put on the practice
squad or did he get O I A I R.
I knew there was something that.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
You're paying too much attention to the booms around here.
Speaker 4 (10:25):
Yeah, he know, I'm trying to remember.
Speaker 5 (10:27):
He uh, I think from you know, the little information
we got is they want they put him where they
needed for him to be. He was, he was by
him coming from a you know, Louisiana Tech or Lafayette
or whatever they want.
Speaker 4 (10:44):
To call you.
Speaker 5 (10:45):
Yeah, yeah, whatever they want to call it. You know,
they say he needed a little bit you know, weight
room work, he needed a little.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
Maturity, and that year gave him that opportunity.
Speaker 5 (10:56):
And they say, now, uh, he's he's leaps and bounds
a different guy than what he was.
Speaker 3 (11:02):
As you know, any other offensive lineman in NFL history
named Nate who maybe needed that when they came out
of college.
Speaker 5 (11:08):
Yeah, I needed it bad. I'm glad the USFL came.
I got some great help in the USFL. So yeah,
you know, sometime when you come from a smaller school,
you may have a body size and some of the
skill sets, but sometime you need that maturity to help
you alone.
Speaker 3 (11:24):
And he will turn twenty four on August twenty second.
Speaker 2 (11:28):
By the way, So.
Speaker 3 (11:31):
The other injury that was announced at the beginning of
the day yesterday, Kayln Carson second year cornerback, fifth round
draft pick last year, started five games last year, also
out four to six weeks with a reportedly with a
hyper extended knee.
Speaker 4 (11:51):
And that's unfortunate because he suffered that shoulder injury last year,
tried to play through it and was not the same
player that we saw out here in training camp that
earned him the start in the season opener. I believe
it was Uh. And so he had off season surgery
(12:12):
and now you know you get back here and then
right away with the hyper extended knees, so he's gonna
miss some time and that that cornerback positions getting pretty thin.
Speaker 3 (12:24):
It's now four cornerbacks who are dealing with knee injuries.
When you look at savone Revel, your two guys Trayvon Diggs,
UH and Josh Butler coming off in a cl and
now you add Kayln Carson. So those are four cornerbacks
who well for sure three of the four were are
(12:48):
for sure we're gonna make regulars. And Josh Butler had
a real good chance as well, the way he played like.
Speaker 4 (12:55):
They were gonna be healthy, they were gonna be top
top four UH corners in the rotation. Revel, my understanding
is that. I was talking to him and he said,
he's doing better, but he's got to now get confidence.
And we always forget this. So when they repair your ACL,
(13:18):
they take a portion of your Patel attendant in your
good knee and that's what they build to reconstruct the
ACL with. And he said that he's still having to
concentrate rehabbing the good knee where they took the Patel
attendant out, so that's gonna take some time. And then Digs.
(13:41):
While he seems to be moving well, they got to
get his conditioning up. And I can see when he's
doing those the resistance cord things with britt Brown that
he gets to a point and he's got to take
a knee. He's out of breath. So while he was
rehabbing away from the place, and maybe you're rehabbing from
(14:05):
the surgery, you also got to increase your conditioning. And
so that's one thing. And they've only had him for
a week think about it to to work with them,
and got a late start with Revel because he was
in college then, so they didn't get him until after
the draft. Uh so, uh, those two guys still have
(14:29):
some work to do before they're gonna be put in pads.
I asked, you'll like this, Nate. I asked Revel and
I said when when you think you're gonna be ready?
And he said whenever Britt tells me. I said, okay,
that's a good barometer.
Speaker 2 (14:44):
You know.
Speaker 5 (14:46):
None of these coners, besides you know Diggs, you don't
know a lot about this training camp is huge, new offensive,
new defensive coordinator, new defensive bat so, new system.
Speaker 2 (15:02):
So this is this is big. They gonna they're gonna
have to hit the ground running.
Speaker 5 (15:07):
Once the Brown, the trainer releases them to come to practice.
They got to hit the ground running.
Speaker 2 (15:17):
This this is this is kind of unique.
Speaker 4 (15:20):
And you gotta be careful because the thing that I
always know about these trainers is once they release them,
they don't want them back. We want to make sure
they're good to go and they don't have any any
regression there. And as Bill said, with the number of
corners dealing with injuries, they ended up signing Christian Matthew
(15:42):
Corner that Iberflus had with the Bears. I think to
two years ago.
Speaker 3 (15:47):
He was on the practice squad with the Bears. Two
years ago he was the Ravens. Last year he was
drafted in the seventh round by Arizona in twenty twenty
two and actually got into some games his rookie year
there before he was signed away by the Bears.
Speaker 4 (16:07):
So more than anything, they just needed bodies at cornerback.
Speaker 3 (16:10):
Interesting on him. He was in college for seven years.
What it started at Georgia's Southern in like twenty six,
twenty fifteen, Georgia's Southern transferred to Samford, transferred to Valdosta State.
And when twenty twenty two was a seventh round draft pick,
(16:32):
he's twenty eight year he'll be twenty nine during this season,
so he's not a young pup come out of here
at cornerback.
Speaker 4 (16:38):
So they just need bodies at those positions.
Speaker 2 (16:42):
You know.
Speaker 4 (16:43):
One injury that kind of got pushed into the background because.
Speaker 3 (16:48):
Of what happened with Rob Jones and Guyiden and Carson
is Brevin span.
Speaker 4 (16:54):
Fourth, Yes, exactly, that's the guy. It's like, remember he
walked off during the scrimmage.
Speaker 3 (17:00):
So we went so we went the first four ramp
up practices with no injury issues, and they practiced two
days in pads and all of a sudden, we count
four right there, no.
Speaker 4 (17:13):
More padded practices we're not playing.
Speaker 3 (17:15):
Football, and even a guy like well, let's go is
not practicing right on Monday either, and neither is one
and one yea Thomas has been out and so all
of a sudden.
Speaker 4 (17:26):
And that's a shame because span Ford was really starting
to show.
Speaker 3 (17:31):
That and you're saying high ankle sprain on it.
Speaker 4 (17:33):
Yeah, yeah, So we'll see how how that one goes. Yeah,
there was a lot of things that overshadowed his injury,
including Jake Ferguson signing his signing his expension.
Speaker 3 (17:46):
Right when we come back, you want to dive into
what some of them, what the coordinator said yesterday.
Speaker 4 (17:52):
Okay, we'll do that.
Speaker 3 (17:53):
In the meantime, during this break, I'm gonna go get

You know, I've got an idea producer, Supreme over there
is monitoring things and he's making sure we get on
the air and all that stuff. And his speaker over
there we can kind of hear that breaking, which is
not a distraction at all, even for Mickey didn't. What
made me think, though, is about it is? You know,
(21:00):
we got fans out here in the parking lot there.
They line up in their cars every day. When I
come here when you come at eight o'clock in the morning,
they're already lined up. And now then they line they
open the parking lot up and then those fans are
able to stand at the gate over there by the
big stage he likes to perform on so much. To
(21:20):
entertain the fans, what they need to do is put
speakers out there and put mix shots on. So those
fans that's rising to us as they're waiting to come
to practice.
Speaker 4 (21:31):
Because they used to listen to Nate.
Speaker 2 (21:33):
Now, Chris, Chris gonna bring that up in the next meeting.
Speaker 3 (21:37):
Put some wireless speakers out there. They can pick up
the show and the way they can be entertained and informed.
That's exactly right. They do have a DJ out there.
Speaker 2 (21:49):
But he's DJ black Beard. It used to be DJ
Sexual Chocolate. He's DJ black Beard, all right.
Speaker 3 (21:58):
It was a day off on the practice field anyway
for the players, but it's never a day off for
us in the media out here at Cowboys camp, right
and yesterday the coordinators were made available to us. They
all were at the podium individually and starting with Matt Eberflus,
the defensive coordinator, Clayton Adams, the offensive coordinator, and then
(22:20):
Nick Sorensen, the special teams coordinator who Mickey decided he
didn't need to go listen.
Speaker 4 (22:25):
To now as my other bosses decided.
Speaker 3 (22:28):
I didn't, Right, So it's great having Ebraflus back.
Speaker 4 (22:33):
Yes, absolutely. And the thing that he said that caught
my attention when he was asked about the key to
run defense and he said, teamwork, teamwork, And he brought
up a little quote from Roden Marinelli, the Cowboys former
(22:54):
defensive coordinator who he worked for as the linebackers coach
when he was here the first time around. Uh, and
he said Marinelli used to say there's no guests on defense,
meaning he wants no house, no house gifts and uh,
he wants everybody contributing. And he said to have a
(23:16):
good defense, the cornerbacks have to tackle, and so you know,
everybody looks at the defensive tackles that that's their responsibility
to stop the run. But his point was we need
all eleven guys playing to stop the run. And he
was talking about you.
Speaker 3 (23:36):
Know usures too, Yeah, rather than your ears back to
go after the quarterback.
Speaker 4 (23:42):
All the time and trying to make a play of
the contract to the quarterback. Yeah, And he was talking
about uh, you know his or somebody brought up his
history of stopping the run, right, And so I went
back and looked the last two times the Cowboys have
have losing seasons, so twenty twenty and last year twenty
(24:05):
twenty four, they finished thirty first and twenty ninth against
the run. Now, I don't know if that's just a
coincidence or if it's foreboding that you better be able
to play the run if you're going to have a winning.
Speaker 5 (24:18):
Record, especially with the division that you're playing in, with
the running backs and quarterbacks that had the ability to
move and run, you have to you have to be dominant.
Speaker 2 (24:30):
You can't be average. Not in the NFC East.
Speaker 5 (24:33):
You're gonna have to be dominant in stopping to run
if you want to be in any of these games.
Speaker 2 (24:38):
That we play. And even New York.
Speaker 5 (24:42):
With their quarterback, they still gonna have to run the ball.
So you're facing your toughest competition right within the East.
I mean, so it better be a team, a team
a team concept, or a team goal to stop the
NFC East from running against you.
Speaker 4 (25:02):
The most you listened to, didn't you?
Speaker 2 (25:06):
Yes?
Speaker 4 (25:07):
What what stood out to you?
Speaker 3 (25:10):
Maybe being the president of the Shawn Lee Fan Club.
He talked about Sean Lee, you know him. I always
my ears perk up when he talks about linebackers because
he's a linebacker guru of sorts. And so I'm also
intrigued about what's going to happen in this linebacking group.
You know, fifty seven Jack Sanborn, who played for him
(25:33):
in Chicago, has been lining up with the ones at
middle linebacker. You know, Kenneth Murray was alongside him when
Murray was back. I assume Murray maybe back today. I
haven't heard. I haven't either, but he was left for
the birth of this child, and and then with marus
Leah Fowl and even de Mont Clark. Yes, that's right.
(25:57):
I think he's just done him some good.
Speaker 4 (26:02):
Murray was absent, right, And I think the thing that
he said, and he used Sean Lee as the examples
that you don't have to be this big, hulking linebacker.
You've got to be smart and be able to move.
And I think that's what he sees in uh Sanborn,
who looks like he's he's more of a cerebral middle
(26:24):
linebacker than anything else.
Speaker 3 (26:26):
And and the other thing was him talking about his
the play style of his defense, right, he said, it's
not for everybody. And when you know, he gets hired
here in January, which and there were this was a
team that had a lot of holes to fill, and
so he was able to study whether it's linebackers, corners,
(26:51):
defensive lineman, whatever it might be that fit his system,
which is a running, aggressive style of defense. You better
be in shape, and you better be you better love
to run, because we're going to run. And he said,
that's not for everybody. And if we figure out that
it's not for you, then you're not gonna be here
very long.
Speaker 5 (27:10):
You know, when is the last time we had a
coaching staff And this may not come out right, but
when is the last time we had a coaching staff.
Speaker 2 (27:20):
That is saying all the right things? But when it.
Speaker 5 (27:23):
Comes time for player personnel moves? Will ownership allow you
to make these?
Speaker 3 (27:30):
Does the player of personnel moves match up with what
coaches want to coach? You know? I think the key
on that is you have to have a coaching staff
that communicates well with the scouting department.
Speaker 2 (27:44):
Yes.
Speaker 3 (27:46):
I think one of the greatest strengths that Schottenheimer has
is obvious is communication ability and his willingness and not
just willingness, but he goes over the top in connecting
with the scouts. I mean, he got that job and
he hits the ground running, not only connecting with the
coaches that he's hired, but getting them on the same
(28:07):
page with the scouts during the whole draft process. He
takes the entire coaching staff to the scouting combine in Indianapolis.
You have part of that is getting to know each
other and bonding and getting work done during downtime there,
but they're also invested in the draft process. Schottenheimer goes
to He went to I think Ohio State, Texas A
(28:28):
and m Ole Miss scouting players. Ibra Flus went to
a couple of those places where they got defensive players.
And so that is the and that's one of the
biggest misnomers about Jerry is that Jerry does his own thing. Now,
Jerry listens to what the coaches said, and you have
to have a head coach and a coaching staff that
(28:49):
understand that's the way it's set up here. You have
the opportunity to go get your players and you can
influence the decision makers.
Speaker 2 (28:58):
And like I said earlier, two players.
Speaker 5 (29:01):
Per position, creating competition. And we've seen where the next
guy has stepped up early in this training camp. But
when the season start, will you have that same mentality.
What if, let's say, if a non drafted guy actually
on paper on film in the scrimmages in the preseason
(29:25):
out play the drafted guy, will you have the authority
to say, Hey, Mick beat out Nate. We should think, Hey,
I think our team is better with with Mick, were
gonna cowboy where we drafted him. You know, that's what
I want to see, bro, because a lot of times
(29:46):
your draft picks get out played or they're not mature
enough at this time.
Speaker 2 (29:50):
Like Nate Thomas. What if he what if he shines
my brother? What if what if he shines that left tackle?
What if he is well during the preseas? What if
he gets with these rams? What if it happens.
Speaker 3 (30:04):
It's happened before.
Speaker 2 (30:05):
Yeah, I mean I've.
Speaker 5 (30:07):
Seen it happen with Jimmy. I've seen that happen with
a few coaches around the league. But it ain't always happening.
Speaker 3 (30:13):
But it happened at right tackle. Yeah, that's what I
was going to say, Steed.
Speaker 2 (30:18):
Yeah, I understand that, But who was the guy ahead
of steal No one.
Speaker 4 (30:24):
Okay, they ran out of guys, I think.
Speaker 2 (30:28):
You know, yeah, So I tell people like.
Speaker 4 (30:33):
This, look at the starting line.
Speaker 5 (30:35):
Give these guys, I honestly, because I mean when I
asked will, I say will. So this gives Austin Richards
a chance. That left tackle, he looked me straight in
and face say no, he cut me off. It's Nate Thomas.
Let him show us he can't play.
Speaker 4 (30:51):
I said, okay, excuse me, yeah, take a step back.
Speaker 3 (30:55):
While Collins was the starting right tackle.
Speaker 2 (30:57):
Yeah, and he was so stiff.
Speaker 5 (30:59):
I mean, I got iron him has got more flexibility
than this kid.
Speaker 4 (31:02):
Well, he had gotten hurt and they moved on from him,
right bruh. He So the other thing, to piggyback on
what Bill said, they started, they could have started their
off season program a week earlier, and Schottenheimer thought the
premium needed to be on coaching his coaches make sure
(31:24):
when they got the players out there, that all the
coaches were on the same page and they were coordinated.
And I think we've seen the benefits of that because
these coaches seem to be really prepared for what's going
on out here.
Speaker 2 (31:39):
Who is the guy and I mentioned look this up.
He got a tall afro.
Speaker 5 (31:45):
No, he's always just running around like the hype man.
Speaker 2 (31:49):
I mean, who is that? What is this.
Speaker 10 (31:53):
Chris?
Speaker 3 (31:54):
Is it Taekwan Underwood?
Speaker 2 (31:56):
Yeah? Oh Jesus man.
Speaker 4 (31:59):
You know what. I just somebody the other day because
he's the guy that jumps out there and wants him
to keep running and running. I told somebody I want
that job. I can go out there and wave the
guy down the field.
Speaker 5 (32:10):
My god, this dude is excited about Yeah. He went
up and down all the scouts and all the and
all the coaches. I mean, we was all standing on
the sideline just thank y'all forgive it for letting me
be here.
Speaker 8 (32:20):
I'm excited all but he's just giving everybody high five like, wow, coach,
you know, hey, I'm excited.
Speaker 3 (32:27):
He is the assistant wide receivers coach. Of course Adams
is the wide receivers.
Speaker 4 (32:31):
Well. To tell you, if played in the league, he
is hyped. He uh at the training table one day
he came up and he introduced himself to me. He
didn't know me from Adam. We were in the same
line together, and he says, hey, man, I'm Duna die,
who are you? And I told him a long you've
been here and I told him. He goes, oh, okay,
(32:54):
So so you're right.
Speaker 3 (32:56):
Taikwan Underwood out of Rutgers, UH played with Jacksonville, New
England and Tampa Bay and then in the CFL.
Speaker 5 (33:05):
Yeah, man, you know when everybody's get a baseball caps,
they're gonna put a Lincoln.
Speaker 2 (33:11):
With the cow.
Speaker 3 (33:14):
Then as far as his coaching experience, he started out
in twenty eighteen at Lafayette as the receiver's coach. I
wonder if John Garrett was still there at Lafayette.
Speaker 4 (33:22):
Then, but that's interesting.
Speaker 3 (33:24):
And then the Dolphins quality control. Then went back to
his alma mater, Rutgers as a wide receivers coach at
Pitt two years ago, past game coordinator, and the Patriots
last year as assistant wide receiver coach. So he's got
that college coaching experience at him too.
Speaker 4 (33:41):
And Nate's right, his hair stands up about a foot
over it.
Speaker 5 (33:46):
Yeah, we're gonna put it out. Think we're gonna get
one of Lincoln hats.
Speaker 3 (33:50):
Drew Pearson, he already wears a Lincoln hat.
Speaker 4 (33:53):
Drew Pearson in the day has to take a back
seat to this guy's hair.
Speaker 3 (33:57):
Yeah, I like that. So you're telling us that we
at the TV station we need to go do a
story on Taekwai.
Speaker 4 (34:05):
Sounds like that.
Speaker 2 (34:06):
Man.
Speaker 5 (34:07):
You know, these guys, I just if they can just
carry this on. Like I say, I don't have no
record for these cowboys. I don't know where this team
is gonna be. But I like the direction of these
coaches and the head coach with the way they're trying
to go.
Speaker 2 (34:25):
Like you said, they're connected with the with the scouts.
Speaker 5 (34:29):
Because for will to say what he said, and then
I went to another scout and he said the same thing.
It's like Nate Thummins the next guy. I'm like, whoa, Okay,
you're too deep at air position.
Speaker 3 (34:38):
So here's here's the other thing. Is we in the media,
we're just taking a cursory look at everything. Oh yeah,
every now and then, Okay, it's it's June and out
by the pool. Okay, I'll take a look at the
depth chart whatever. Right, You know these guys are immersed
in this stuff.
Speaker 2 (34:56):
Yes, yes, you.
Speaker 3 (34:57):
Know, twenty four to seven throughout the off season. And
so it's no surprise to anybody back here that Nate
Thomas is the next man up because they've seen it
over the course of the last couple of months during
the off season workouts.
Speaker 5 (35:10):
Well, they see the last coaching staff was not into that.
Awsome Riches was to swing tackle during training camp, right,
and so that's what I thought, and he just reinforced
what the what the head coach has been saying, we
are gonna be competitive, especially early here in camp, to.
Speaker 2 (35:28):
Give everybody a rep.
Speaker 5 (35:30):
That's why they don't waste time doing one on one
pass rusher one on one, uh uh seven on you know,
wide receiver one on one. They want game type situations
and game type looks, and that is eleven on eleven
gives you that every every chance they want the reps
blowing to whistle.
Speaker 3 (35:50):
You know, that's one of the biggest differences in this
camp compared to pass camp.
Speaker 2 (35:54):
No no, no half lines.
Speaker 5 (35:56):
And let's get the full line and the pacers fast
is fast, man, They get back to the line of
into the battle until the line of skirmmage and the
balls off.
Speaker 3 (36:05):
All right, let's when we come back. Let's stalk Clayton
Adams offensive coordinator.
Speaker 5 (36:10):
Is he the offensive coordinator? Offensive line coach. I'm trying
to figure that out.
Speaker 4 (36:13):
I think there's a slash there. He's an offensive coordinator,
who is an offensive line coach, and.
Speaker 3 (36:21):
More on that when Mixed Shots continues at Them All
Go Cowboys.

All right, we're now less than a week away from
the Los Angeles Rams descending upon Oxnard for a joint
practice next Tuesday. We are a week and a half
away from the preseason opener at the Los Angeles Rams
a week from Saturday, August ninth. But we got two
practices the next couple of days here after a day
(39:29):
off of the players yesterday, and we did talk to
the coordinators, and let's talk a little Clayton Adams, the
new offensive coordinator for the Cowboys that we last for yesterday. Now,
his title is simply offensive coordinator, but if you look
at his history, he has been an offensive line coach
throughout his career, most recently with the Arizona Cardinals. He
(39:52):
was a tight ends coach with the Indianapolis Colts in
twenty twenty one to twenty two. Prior to that, assistant
offense sub line coach with the Colts, and of course
that he would have been with Matt Eberflus when he
was in Indianapolis. Of course, Abrafluce. On the other side
of the ball. He was at Colorado as a running
(40:14):
backs coach, tight ends coach and then offensive line coach
from twenty thirteen through twenty eighteen, San Jose State tight
ends coach eleven twelve, and prior to that, Sacramento State
in Western Washington. You look back at his history and
you can see that he is a Mike McIntyre guy.
I remember Mike McIntyre, who is a secondary coach here
(40:36):
under parcels going all the way back to two thousand
and six, was the head coach at San Jose State
and Colorado. And I like what I hear out of
Clayton Adams.
Speaker 4 (40:47):
He and Nate's having a hard time with him being
the offensive coordinator offensive line.
Speaker 2 (40:56):
Which one are you, sir?
Speaker 3 (40:58):
Is it Connor Riley or Clayton Adams or combination?
Speaker 4 (41:03):
And they have offensive line coach.
Speaker 5 (41:06):
See I've never seen him down the walk working with
the offensive line.
Speaker 3 (41:09):
I see his titles offensive coordinator.
Speaker 4 (41:11):
He's the coordinator. I just said he had been an
offensive line coach. Has doubled down on the offense.
Speaker 2 (41:20):
Fighting. We can fight then, yeah, not verbally. I want
to win.
Speaker 5 (41:25):
I can't beat you verbally, but I could beat you physically,
what do you think bial I think could?
Speaker 2 (41:31):
I can't beat him verbally.
Speaker 4 (41:34):
So you know one of the things he said early
about getting guys opportunities, Uh it was. It was about
nobody gets excited about an injury, but it creates opportunities
that we may not have gotten if that guy didn't
(41:54):
get hurt. Hence Thomas going in at tackle. Now Forgeiden,
Rob Jones goes down. Now you need somebody to be
that swing guy at the guard position. Now awesome, Richards
gets more.
Speaker 2 (42:10):
TJ.
Speaker 4 (42:10):
Bass gets more.
Speaker 2 (42:11):
Yes, when when.
Speaker 4 (42:15):
Uh Still went down, all of a sudden, we learned identergy, right,
he was the guy that got to go in and
he goes. That's he goes. It's a minus because your
guy's not there, but it's a plus that guys are
getting snaps that they normally wouldn't have gotten.
Speaker 2 (42:31):
And I'm and I'm gonna tell you something.
Speaker 5 (42:33):
When you are dedicated as a coach in trying to
put this type system in of compmpetitive competition, a guy
don't stay injured. Loan a little Nikki injury. You know,
they kind of will go to the train and say,
look here, man, I'm good. I got this when you Yeah,
(42:53):
And I like that that competition, A healthy competition.
Speaker 2 (42:57):
Keep a lot of.
Speaker 5 (42:58):
Guys off our missing games, you know when you when
you just nicked a difference between Nick.
Speaker 2 (43:04):
Now we have the corners are hurt. These guys are hurt.
But a little spraining ankle. This is a high ankle sprain.
What are you doing?
Speaker 4 (43:11):
Well? Let me give you an example of that. Rob
Jones when he suffered the fracture on his vertebrate, he
didn't say anything to anybody. He finished, He finished the
darn practice. It's your vertebrae.
Speaker 3 (43:28):
And he didn't run to the locker room after practice.
He sat that out there on the field and worked
with the young first round draft pick on technique stuff.
Speaker 4 (43:39):
And what is your vertebrae guard your spine right, that's
serious stuff. And yeah, I don't know if he saw
what was on the T shirts, the sweatshirts that say
compete every day, But he wasn't gonna come off the field.
Speaker 2 (43:57):
You know.
Speaker 5 (43:58):
And I think the coach offer just line coach, you
know preachers that the way they work, they speed at
which they work.
Speaker 4 (44:07):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (44:07):
I think sometimes you're at adrenaline flowing and that that
got us through back in the day. They how did
y'all get through the practice? It was the adrenaline. It's
amazing how that thing can build itself up and can
tolerate more than you think through just to adrenaline, you know.
Just none stop adrenaline, you know.
Speaker 2 (44:25):
And so I.
Speaker 5 (44:28):
Like where we're at. I like how they're practicing. And
you mentioned earlier making teasingly like, oh, let's stop padded practices.
I was asked that question yesterday, what are you And
I'm just like, bro, please don't stop.
Speaker 2 (44:44):
Please.
Speaker 5 (44:45):
These injuries that are happening, it's because guys fell on
the ground. These these are one injuries where somebody got
hit or somebody you know, ran somebody blew a knee up.
These guys were on the ground and they got rolled
up on. That happens every day. That happens in soccer
basketball practice.
Speaker 2 (45:06):
That happened.
Speaker 5 (45:07):
That's that's just a bad accident. Don't stop the padded practices,
don't stop the tempo because they gonna win a game
or two early just because they're in great shape.
Speaker 2 (45:22):
Because they're in great conditioning. All right.
Speaker 3 (45:24):
One thing that Clayton Adams did talk about was the
running back room I really like our running back group.
Speaker 4 (45:32):
That stood out to me.
Speaker 2 (45:33):
Also.
Speaker 5 (45:34):
Yeah, And I want to apologize because I've been so
engrossed in the offensive line and watching the receivers. I
haven't even watched the running backs. That's that's bad on
my part. But I want to see what the receiver's
gonna do. Who's that third or fourth guy gonna be?
And I want to see what the offensive line gonna
do and the running backs will. If you, if we
(45:57):
get a running back that can help the offensive line
be better, then I may start looking at him.
Speaker 2 (46:02):
But I think it's the other way around. Right now.
I think offs and line gonna have to make the
running backs better.
Speaker 4 (46:07):
I think I didn't know much about Javonte Williams and uh,
I've been kind of impressed with him on how he's
able to hit the hole and then cut, not start
cutting before he gets to the hole. He puts his
foot in the ground and goes Uh. So I've noticed
(46:28):
that Miles Sanders hasn't lost a step.
Speaker 2 (46:31):
Oh, no he hasn't. Right, No, he hasn't.
Speaker 5 (46:34):
I've seen him breaking opening and I see some DVS
thought they was gonna come get him.
Speaker 2 (46:38):
It didn't work.
Speaker 4 (46:39):
Blows right by.
Speaker 5 (46:40):
Yeah, it didn't work. I'm like, whoa who was that?
I thought it was a young blue and with him.
Speaker 4 (46:44):
Yeah, and that guy can run also, and he looks
to be getting more comfortable, especially in the in the
pass in the passing game. So I think we got
to see this thing play out.
Speaker 2 (46:56):
All right.
Speaker 3 (46:57):
Out of time, we got the Dak car wash for
the local TV people today. You got a question for Dak.
Speaker 4 (47:02):
Here out of time. See if he remembers how old
he is?
Speaker 3 (47:05):
Okay, got a birthday he did yesterday?
Speaker 2 (47:09):
Two? All right, Dak is moving around well in practice?
Speaker 4 (47:12):
Yes he is.
Speaker 2 (47:13):
He's moving around well.
Speaker 4 (47:14):
And you know what, the ball's not on the ground
all that much unless guys aren't catching.
Speaker 5 (47:18):
It, thank you. That is my big issue. You watch
our receivers, please.
Speaker 4 (47:23):
Catch the ball. That's to be the next T shirt.
Speaker 3 (47:28):
All right, That does it for this edition of mix Shots.
And we're gonna do this again. How about we do
it again on Friday? You want to do it Friday Friday,
nine o'clock Pacific time, eleven o'clock.
Speaker 4 (47:39):
Is there Dallas time?
Speaker 3 (47:41):
There is no practice that day, so we can go
along that day, Producer Supreme, all right, does it for
mix Shots and we will see you again next time.
Speaker 2 (47:50):
And go Cowboys mix Shots.
Speaker 1 (47:55):
This has been a production of Dallascowboys dot Com and
the Dallas Cowboys Football Club.
Speaker 9 (48:00):
How was your trouble here, h,
