Kyle Youmans, Patrik Walker, Isaiah Stanback, and Josh Rodriguez preview how the Cowboys’ struggling defense matches up against a schematically tricky Commanders offense. With communication issues at the core of Dallas’ collapse, Patrik breaks down the science of why being “middle-of-the-road” could be enough - if the Cowboys can finally get on the same page.

the coyness going on. I'm not sure I like it.
Why is that? Why would you say that? I'm just

the heck's going on? I don't know, don't worry about it.
You tell me we got something for that. That was

has no idea what that song?

Speaker 1 (02:11):
Now, I didn't, but he did show it to me,
so you always know Kyle doesn't know. Kyle does this. Yeah,
he just kind of looks around. I make the same
face every time that I don't get a reference.

Speaker 3 (02:21):
And so everybody that's ever watched the show previously, it's like, yeah,
he doesn't get it.

Speaker 6 (02:27):
I don't even know. I do not know that reference.

Speaker 1 (02:30):
We're gonna cheers to cancel the na Koy cheers. Why.

Speaker 6 (02:35):
I would love to, but I disagree entirely. No, No,
I'm gonna be coy today.

Speaker 3 (02:38):
No.

Speaker 1 (02:39):
You know what do you know why?

Speaker 6 (02:40):
Why? It's a defensive preview.

Speaker 1 (02:44):
You know how I can get you out of your coitness?
Why is that? You know how can get you out
of that? Josh making some adjustments. Somebody's news and noise
notes are gonna get you out of your coinness. That
was good, all right, news and notes. First of all,
let's start with the good news. Literally, no d nps
from Wednesday's was no way. Every single person who's on

(03:07):
the active roster practice some capacity yesterday.

Speaker 6 (03:10):
Guys, let's do a collective thumbnail for Zach.

Speaker 1 (03:13):
All right, what Absolutely, it's a thing. It's a thing. Wow,
first time in just last week, couple of weeks ago,
last two weeks, I should say, I mean this thing
looked like a mass unit. So yeah, everyone who is
on the active Ross Tyler Booker, Tyler Booker Limited yesterday

(03:35):
with his Ceedee Lamb yep, Cede Lamb Limited yesterday. Cavante
Turpin absolutely, Johnny Cornelius, that is correct.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
Marshawn Kneeling, what about There's no way Donovan Wilson practice
he did?

Speaker 1 (03:47):
What about Kaitlyn Carson? And did h James Houston? That's
James Houston. That's James Houston. Yep. Full Who else she got?
I'll do you want better? Deron Bland isn't even on
the injury report anyway? Is Trayvon Diggs on the injury
Trayvon Diggs? Yes, but he was a full participant. No, okay, no,

(04:07):
that she was there. He's fine. Nice Jonathan Mango, he
was a participant limited capacity. Curious to see which one
of those guys because I know that earlier in the
week the front office said that they were looking to
activate both of them from the twenty one day practice
window as early as this week. They made one move
yesterday and waving Jalen the day before, waving Jalen Cropper,
who by the way, is back on the practice squad,

(04:29):
cleared Waivers got him. That being said, you still only
have one spot and if you're going to bring back
spotware on the fifty three, and that being said, with
Cayln Carson being full for the past several practices, I
feel like that's going to be the most certain activation
does make me wonder about Jonathan Mango because initially he

(04:50):
started out as full he was downgraded to limit it
because he has some soreness in his knee. As told
by Brian Schottenheimer, he's still not back at full yet.
He's practicing, but he's not back at full capacity just yet.
I feel like Kaylen Carson will be activated to the
fifty three man roster and maybe maybe another week for
Jonathan Ingle. But they got to make a decision Wednesday.
It has to be made by Wednesday of next week.

Speaker 6 (05:11):
Can I make a bold prediction on the status of
Kayling Carson.

Speaker 1 (05:13):
To say with the chest on a Thursday.

Speaker 6 (05:15):
I am almost positive, just personally from I don't know anything.

Speaker 1 (05:20):
So it's just this is just an opinion, a gut feeling.

Speaker 6 (05:22):
If you will, I bet you Kyer Elim is inactive
in place of Kalen Carson this week. Wow, when you
look at Kalen Carson's I'm sorry, Kyrie Ellum snaps have
significantly increased over the last three weeks.

Speaker 1 (05:38):
You know, I don't know if it's bold though I agree,
but I don't.

Speaker 6 (05:41):
Know if it's bold that Kyri Elam is an active.

Speaker 1 (05:45):
Because somebody is going to be inactive for Kayling Carson
to get some run on the game day roster, and
kyer Elam makes the most sensorily because it's not going
to be Ready Steward. You know, it's not going to
be Deron or it's bold for me. Okay, Well, remember
there is like a it's a tala sized there.

Speaker 3 (05:58):
There will need to be a move at some point
in order to get Carson and Mingo on the roster.
You've got one spot open right now, guys, so you can, yeah,
and with two guys on their way back from their
practice window, so one guy can be active this week
and so that might be Kaitlin Carson and then the
other guy and Jonathan Mingo might be a next week thing.
And then you wait a week just to see if

(06:21):
there's any sort of conversation with injuries. God forbids, somebody
goes down Sunday with an injury, somebody has an IR
stint on the way, and then you put them the
IR and then there's that open roster.

Speaker 1 (06:30):
Two guys in one spot. It's not good. But I'll
tell you what the big news is is, like you mentioned,
is cd Beck, Yes, it's Fante Turpin Beck. Yes, is
Tyler Booker Beck is he yes, Wow. So those three
guys all are trending toward returning to the field against
the Washington Commanders. The lead horse in that is obviously
Ceedee Lamb shot he said yesterday, If Cede Lamb is

(06:53):
breathing in yesterday's practice, he's playing. I loved it.

Speaker 3 (06:56):
He said that that was just the best because I
believe what was it, Todd r truth question, I don't
want to say, what does he have to do?

Speaker 1 (07:02):
What does he have to do?

Speaker 3 (07:03):
And he said, as long as he's breathing, breathing, He's like,
I'm good as long as he breathing.

Speaker 1 (07:08):
And he did. He did clarify.

Speaker 3 (07:10):
He said in order, I'm making light of it because
we are so confident that he is going to get
back in the fold. And sure enough he was out there.
His real answer to that question was run around, run
a couple of routes, look solid, and catch a couple
of footballs and you're good. And he looked like that yesterday.
He even showed it in the media. Porsche.

Speaker 1 (07:27):
He was running routes and I'm just guaranteed on purpose.

Speaker 6 (07:31):
They said, r A f O run around and find
out and he certainly did he ran around then we
found out that we gotta I have a question.

Speaker 1 (07:38):
Yes, Isaiah Kyle. I know you didn't grow up in
the hood, but in the hood, in the hood, we
had these these guys there were usually on drugs called crackheads,
and uh you would know.

Speaker 6 (07:52):
For a reference, they called him and Craig crackheads.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
So Craig users are called Craig. So where are we going. Listen,
I'm getting there. Crackheads saw opportunities whenever there was a
window that was open, window was open. If you guys
haven't seen Friday, Yeah, he's a right, So he's also
univers he sees the window open, he's going in the
opportunity to go to go get something, hey, that you
really want. Speaking of windows being open, I'm hearing murmurs,

(08:17):
good murmurs of a certain individual that there may or
may not in the coming weeks. Might they might be
a window that's opened. Speak on. I would like for
you to speak honest. You're the expert. You're hearing the murmurs.
You're an expert. You're all the experts. Agent zero, you
know what I'm talking about. Yeah, you're right. I mean,
you could have easily been talking about Perry on Winfrey.
You really could have his video is awesome? Yeah, yeah,

(08:39):
TVD on Perry on Winfrey. I know a lot of
fans are asking about Perry on Winfrey, but no update.

Speaker 6 (08:44):
He was out there, Hey, what's happened to Prepare on Winfrey.

Speaker 1 (08:47):
He's making progress, but we don't have a timeline for you.

Speaker 6 (08:49):
Okay, thank you.

Speaker 1 (08:50):
Same for Savone Revel. I know fans are asking about
him as well. The Maion over shown he is hitted
back so he could see his practice window opened as
early as nixt week. So shot he said one. He
said either next week or the next couple of weeks
or so. So I fully expect that the Marveon Overshown's
window will be opened before before the calendar flips to

(09:11):
November and his original date that he had circled thanks Thanksgiving. Right,
he's ahead of schedule by a little bit. But even
even if it's open next week, you think about next
few weeks.

Speaker 3 (09:24):
He got twenty one days there, so it's getting right
up to that week before things.

Speaker 1 (09:28):
So it's looking like he's on track for thanks On
the track is probably they're going to take They're going
to a factor in the bye week and everything into
everything is going to go into that decision, but soon
arrives or returns to marveon overshow.

Speaker 6 (09:41):
And to be fair, and I had a discussion with
a big Nate about this, large Nathaniel Will Large Nathaniel.
We're talking in the lunch mom and the worst man,
uh talking about overshowing and basically, you know, just kind
of a Devil's advocate way to look at it. You know,

(10:01):
it's a kind of a negative aspect on it, where
it's like, you can't expect to be the same dude,
to be the same dude one coming back from an
injury like that again, and then to fix this defense.

Speaker 1 (10:14):
You can't nothing. But let's step in the right direct
to step in the right druct.

Speaker 6 (10:17):
But I want to collectively say, for talking Cowboys, we're
not saying to Marvin overshown in this offense, the worst
or in this defense, the worst defense in the league
currently is not going to make matters.

Speaker 1 (10:30):
A whole lot better than you do. I need to sign,
Do I need to make a sign? Make a sign
sign for when comes. This does not imply, this does
not imply thirty second first take it to the top one.

Speaker 6 (10:42):
But you certainly want him on the field.

Speaker 1 (10:44):
I am excited for his journey. Yes, for somebody who
is has had their seasons taken from them numerous times.
I am excited for his journey. I genuinely want to see.
He's a good dude with great energy, great work ethic,
huge impact when he's on the field. Looking forward to
seeing him get back in the fold and adding to
this defense as we talk about the defense, getting ready

(11:06):
to talk about defense versus their offense. Yeah, this defense
has it has to change, Yes, And I can't imagine
that you go into a game against the Washington Commanders
and execute the same game plan that you've been going
into every game with. I can't foresee that I'm also
going to go ahead and see I'm going to see
you that I'm going to raise you one. Yeah, even
if we and we will grant grace to the Marvionovershown

(11:29):
too when he returns. As far as getting ramped in
the absolutely, but to Maveon over shown in a ramp
up period on the field, it's still your best linebacker probably,
which means that when I when we say things like
help is on the way, we're not implying that he's
the end all be y'all to get you from thirty
second First, we're simply saying that, objectively speaking, he makes

(11:52):
your defense better, and the fact that he plays in
the heart of the defense that matters that much more.

Speaker 3 (11:57):
I want to stick with the linebackers here because as
we're previewing the Dallas defense against the Washington offense, I
kind of want to go level by level year defensive, line, linebackers, secondary.
What would be your A through F grade for each
one of those units date to date six weeks into
the year. Because I'll start Let's start with the linebackers.

(12:20):
Since we were just talking about the Marvin overshow okay linebackers'.
We've of course had the criticism of Jack Sanborn and
the way that he's played. I've defended Kenneth Murray a
couple times on this show. He had an awful game
against Carolina. He was bad against Carolina. And that's not
to say he's a bad linebacker. I really don't think

(12:40):
he is. But he had a bad game playing and simple,
just like Marislee, if Fall has had a couple of
bad games in a row, his direction got him.

Speaker 6 (12:46):
The defense was up physical in every aspect. Yes, in
every aspect on every level.

Speaker 1 (12:51):
Playing and simple this week, as we already talk about
their offense. If misdirection got you last week, it's gonna
get you this, Oh my lord, Cliff Kingsbury's comment, Lord, and.

Speaker 6 (13:00):
Then speaking of the defensive line, Kenny Clark probably had
his worst game as it definitely his worst game and
a game that you do not expect out of a
guy like Kenny Clark because of how well he's played
up until this point. But like I said, d.

Speaker 3 (13:13):
Didn't play well, Solomon didn't play well, out physical on
every level.

Speaker 1 (13:16):
But six weeks was playing well?

Speaker 5 (13:18):
Was it?

Speaker 1 (13:19):
They? They just got beat up. They just got beat up.
I think you know what I'm saying, Like there's both
things happened. The reason you didn't play well is because
you got beat up. You had a conversation and you
got pushed around.

Speaker 3 (13:28):
I had a conversation with a staff member yesterday about
some of the conversations on the sideline. That was the
message being shown by the defensive staff throughout was we
are not playing our brand of football. We are not
having You're getting punked, is a great way to put it.
They didn't say that specifically, but they were saying, we're
being out physical, we're being pushed around. This is not

(13:50):
our brand of football, this is not the standard. And
that was what the staff as a whole on the
defensive side was saying. They were the ones that were
trying to bring accountability. There's also, in the eyes of
who I was talking to, there's maybe a lack of
leadership from a player standpoint on the defense, which we've
talked about before. We've had that conversation. Who are your
leaders on your defensive side of the ball.

Speaker 1 (14:13):
I'm waiting. I'll give you maybe, but he's not a
vocal leader. Kenny Clark. Clark is brand new, so vocal leaders.
And Kenny also doesn't do a lot demo.

Speaker 3 (14:23):
Demo might be your guy, and he's not available right now.
But that's the point is when the when the staff
is saying, but did you have wings across the board?

Speaker 1 (14:31):
No, even even prior to the trade, you didn't have one. No,
probably not.

Speaker 6 (14:35):
You had two of them last year.

Speaker 3 (14:36):
Well, you expected Micah to be that, but he never
was going Michael was in a vocal he was Jeer.

Speaker 6 (14:44):
DeMarcus Lawrence d.

Speaker 1 (14:45):
Law could be.

Speaker 3 (14:46):
But even d Law wasn't available for the majority of
last year anyways.

Speaker 6 (14:50):
Sweet, but you've had leaders on the defense before, and
now that you have a basically new.

Speaker 1 (14:55):
Look, I'll give you one who's trying to be one
y one your time, one ye yeah. If he yeah,
one yea is most certainly see that. I don't know
that he's he doesn't have and he doesn't have on
the wall exactly, he doesn't have that. That would be
the only reason that you kind of hesitate putting the
that leadership thing on him. But however, he's vocal, he's

(15:15):
getting the starts now, he's he's playing well in his starts.
I could see him stepping into that road answer.

Speaker 3 (15:21):
And no matter what the status of leadership is on
the defensive side of the football, having guys like that
that are accountable and that are at least trying to
keep the other guys within grasp accountable as well, that's
what you need to start.

Speaker 1 (15:34):
Building the right direct and what we're referring to before
we hop onto the other stuff is when you're getting
beat up, when you're getting punked, call it what it is, right,
I don't STI I'm a black and white dude, Like,
tell me straight up, don't you know, well you know,
we're not playing our Brandon. You're getting punked, okay, man
taking your chain and running you off the ball.

Speaker 6 (15:53):
Check like that, Grandmama, give me that.

Speaker 1 (15:55):
It's a physical game, right, This is a man man
versus man game. Like you have individal battles and nobody
wants to hear that you're losing your battle to another man.
So you call a spade a spade when you're getting
your butt kicked. So they were getting their butt kicked.
So when you're having that happen, because it does happen,
there has to be somebody who vocally steps up physically,

(16:16):
you know, executing wise. You need you got to do
that for you can't just talk about it, right. I
gotta get on my daughter about that all the time
where things aren't going well. She's like, yeah, yeah, you
guys got to pick it up. I'm like, hey, you
pick it up first before you say anything, exactly by example,
and then you then you can speak on it. Right,
So you can't just do one or the other. But
you need somebody to call a spade a spade in
that moment outside of coaches and be like, yeah, nah,

(16:39):
this is not about to go down like this, right,
and you have to change it. You have you have
to change it, bro. And there's going to be times.
There was times back in the day when I when
I'm not here in Dallas, but when I was playing
quarterback and I had that leadership role where we were
getting our buts kicking. I'm like, hey, I y'all ain't
gonna do it. Bet, I'll do it. Yeah, And you
just straight up like, all right, you want you want
to keep getting beat up, you you go ahead and
get beat up. I'll take care of it. Don't worry

(16:59):
about it. You know what I'm say, You take over that.

Speaker 6 (17:01):
But doesn't it do what MYSELFE absolutely doesn't it feel
low in a lot of instances. That's what's also getting
us into trouble too, where it's like you have guys
that are trying to step up in those things, that
are getting out of position and trying to make the play.

Speaker 1 (17:12):
It happens, you know, like getting out of their own assignment,
especially defensively and overplay.

Speaker 6 (17:17):
And honestly, man, a performance like that against the Panthers,
you can't blame that on matter. Ebraflus Like, I really
don't think so. I don't think what he was doing
as far as his own defense and everything to put
those players into position to make plays. I don't think
that was necessarily the fault. It was guys trying to
clean up and make the play and trying to lead
by example by making the biggest.

Speaker 1 (17:36):
Is not a scheme thing. This past game was not scheme.
You didn't get beat by your scheme. No. In weeks
prior to that, I would definitely say eberl yes, not
even just a scheme, but like the players within the
scheme were I don't know what the heck they were
doing sometimes right, So I don't even know if it
was just me. That's why I've been hesitant to say
that as Eberflus's fault, right, I'm like, these are basic

(17:58):
things that these guys are being asked to do with.
Somebody's got in there.

Speaker 6 (18:01):
We're all the thirty second ranked defense.

Speaker 1 (18:03):
There's fault across the shore.

Speaker 6 (18:05):
It's not one source.

Speaker 1 (18:07):
Absolutely, absolutely everybody has to take responsibility. But like we're
talking about pro athletes asking being asked to play basic
coverages and they start seeing ghosts and running around with
their hair cut off. So like there's certain things that
are just going that are inexplicable, which is why those
individuals are no longer playing.

Speaker 6 (18:20):
And when you think about it, okay and look at
the issues that you had last season with Mike Zimmers
defense when they're trying to acclim me to that. One
of the things that Jordan Lewis, former Cowboy said going
into the I think it was like week eight or
nine when we're just struggling on defense. The details, it's
all about the details.

Speaker 1 (18:34):
Makes said, they're like five weeks in a row because
it was an issue and.

Speaker 6 (18:39):
The personnel hasn't necessarily changed in the secondary, I mean
aside from a few guys, so you're just having those
issues yet again, it's frustrating.

Speaker 3 (18:48):
It is frustrating, and I thought Robert in the comments
said he said, still feeling coy across the board.

Speaker 1 (18:55):
Defense has to change.

Speaker 3 (18:56):
Plus players must buckle up and stop being punked four
and during the game, which is absolutely.

Speaker 1 (19:02):
True to do it buckle up, but it's absolutely true.
I agree with Robert. It has to change.

Speaker 3 (19:07):
There has to be a movement in the right direction
because you aren't going any direction except for backwards right now.
And I've got a stat to prove that when we
come back, we're also going to have a little bit
of lab coat.

Speaker 1 (19:19):
What you what you got working? You know what's so
perfect about this week's lab coat is it's focused completely
on the Cowboys defense ah and and for the talking
Cowboys fandomly that have tuned in each day this week
and a little bit last week. It'll sound familiar to
you because there was a topic, a hot topic that
we debated here that I partlaid into my science.

Speaker 3 (19:41):
Last hot topic, stats and lab coat when we come
back with more Talking Cowboys right after this.

Speaker 1 (19:50):
I'm home. Hey mom, before you ask, I've done my
homework and the dishwashers unloading. Nice? Hey can you?

Speaker 5 (19:56):
Hey?

Speaker 1 (19:56):
Hon? Yes, I've got the finale ready to play. Here's
your wine? Wow? Isn't it nice? Not having to ask?
We think so.

Speaker 3 (22:15):
We are black Rifle, by the way, Calling on Cowboys
fans ten percent off your total purchase, your entire purchase
on game days. When you wear Cowboys gear doesn't have
to be anything special. It could be a Cowboys hat,
it could be a Cowboys shirt, could be a jersey.

Speaker 1 (22:31):
You could go full fandom and wear like.

Speaker 3 (22:33):
The wrestler outfit and the shoulder pads, a full super
cowboy on that thing.

Speaker 1 (22:39):
What about when those Talking Cowboys Cowboys shirts that somebody
made for you wear that, they might get twenty percent off,
fifty five percent off.

Speaker 3 (22:48):
Now we need to talk to them about giving Talking
Cowboys listeners twenty five percent off, Like we need to
talk to that. It's not a thing yet, So don't
go demand your black right, but definitely get.

Speaker 1 (22:59):
Your ten percent off black rifle by wearing your gear.
But like, who's going to be the one in our
fan our fan mealie fandomly, who's gonna Who's gonna provide
us some apparel this year? Last year we had a
couple of people provide us some need a hoodie. I
don't like asking, well, first you need no, because we
have some very creative people and now this AI thing

(23:20):
is in place, and like I would imagine that the
creativity level is probably taking up to the tenth power.

Speaker 6 (23:24):
What I need is a hoodie for talking cowboy. It's
just something simple, just the just the logo right here.

Speaker 1 (23:28):
I'm not cold yet, so it's true.

Speaker 6 (23:30):
Mm hmm, what's three we're talking about?

Speaker 1 (23:32):
Okay, I need the hoodie clore hat or hoodie guy myself.

Speaker 6 (23:39):
Sunglasses a logo on it.

Speaker 1 (23:42):
I had to get used to the hoodie with the
long hair because I was like, how do you because
you know you can't put it over, you can't wear
the locks inside the hoodie because that's uncomfortable. I have
the same problem you're a hoodie guy. I am such
a hoodie guy.

Speaker 3 (23:53):
I got in trouble for wearing too many you did building.
I got calls because you're too manyodies. Yeah, said stop
wearing hoodie. And now I keep it at my desk,
and I put the hoodie on while I'm at my desk,
and then if I have to go to the bathroom
or go grab food or go.

Speaker 1 (24:09):
Grab whatever, I take it off and keep walking. We
got an HR reminder because of k one. Yeah, it
was all because of me. Really was hoodie?

Speaker 3 (24:20):
All right, black rifle coffee, appreciate you as always. It's
time for a little bit of lab coat.

Speaker 1 (24:25):
Bring me in Beamer, yes, science all right. So last
week it might have been earlier. This week, my days
were starting to run together because we were in the
middle of the season. And that's how it goes. You
just leave. Just leave them, be man, just leave them.

Speaker 6 (24:39):
All right.

Speaker 1 (24:39):
There was a great conversation hotly debated between myself, Kyle,
and one Temmy yourrish do NFL teams?

Speaker 6 (24:47):
Now?

Speaker 1 (24:47):
This was Tommy's point. Tommy's point was that NFL teams
required both an elite offense and elite defense, which is
a fair point to become a Super Bowl champion. That
is a fair point. And my counter argument was that
one that is ideal and that is the goal of
every one of the thirty two NFL teams. History doesn't
bear that out to be true. What Okay? So I

(25:08):
went back curie, curiously, and this is going to be
in Science Lab. I break it down fully on I came,
I like that right here. You can't see me, So
Josh Rodriguez and all of his greatness to see me.
That's really good. Exactly. We'll have Science Lab up on
Dallas Cowboys dot com this morning to make sure you
check this out. That being said, I went back and

(25:30):
looked at every single Super Bowl winner since the turn
of the century. Okay, the last twenty five super Bowl winners, wow.
And I looked at their offensive rankings and defensive rankings
based on points per game. Okay. I was curious to
see how many of those twenty five teams were able
to brag about having an elite defense and an elite offense. Now,

(25:51):
how do I define elite elite mid on the road? Man? Okay?
I defineally as top five. That's fair. Okay, if your
top ten, you're good, You're really good. Yeah. Top five
is you're in different.

Speaker 6 (26:03):
Air, different company. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (26:04):
Of the past twenty five super Bowl champions, only three, well,
only three super Bowl champions in the past quarter century
have had an elite defense and an elite offense. One
comes by way of I got my list in front
of me. We got the Eagles when they won Super
Bowl fifty two, they had the third best offense and

(26:25):
the fourth best defense. Okay, back to back here because
super Bowl fifty one, the one previous ward, the New
England Patriots, their offense was ranked third, defense was ranked
first in the league. Okay, and we have only one more,
which will be come on with it. Don't hide, don't
hi the Patriots again, super Bowl thirty nine, fourth best offense,

(26:46):
second best defense. Other than that, you're seeing a healthy
mix if you need it. Oh yeah, because you see
me scrolling see web master, web master. So you have
three only three everyone else. You're seeing things like the
first ranked offense, the sixteenth ranked defense. That was the
Super Bowl fifty seven winners, the Kansas City Chiefs. And

(27:06):
then I know some people are going to say it, well, no,
see what about the Eagles. They had the seventh best
first of all, I said, top five is the leade.
But I'll play this game with your seventh best offense
last year when they run one but they had the
second best defense. But then when you put it in close, close,
when you put it in the micro cosmo, what happened
in the game though, of the forty points that the
Eagle scored, because you could look at it and say,
oh yeah, because they dropped forty on the Chiefs, Okay, well,
a pick six from Cooper Degen. You had twelve of

(27:30):
those forty points put up by Jake Elliott, your kicker.
And the three touchdowns that Jalen Hurts were responsible for,
a one yard rushing touchdown, a twelve yard passing touchdown,
and the only chunk play for the offense as far
as touchdowns are concerned, was a forty six yard touchdown
to Devonte Smith. They were not world beaters in that
particular game. However, they controlled the clock thirty eight minutes.

(27:51):
Thirty eight minutes that they kept Patrick Mahomes off the field,
and when he was on the field, six sacks and
twenty six pressure, so they were elite when they needed
to be. That is correct. So my point being, would
you love to have an elite offense and an elite
defense at the same time. Absolutely, that goes without saying.
Shouldn't have to say it, but sure, I'll say it. Okay,
But realistically speaking, far more often than not, especially in

(28:14):
the salary cap era, you need one to be elite
and the other to be better than average average ish,
that's what you need if you can do that. There
are so many teams in this championship list that's on
Science Lab that drops some Dallas Cowboys dot Com that
you'll be able to say, well, the offense was mid,
the defense was elite. The offense was elite, the defense

(28:35):
was mid. That's you just need somebody to be one
of those sides of the ball to be better than worse. Man,
I wish this defense was mid, Yeah, I would. I
would love if they were just Science Lab coming this morning.
That would be great.

Speaker 3 (28:47):
The unfortunate part of it is that they are not
mid right now, and that's where this defensive preview comes
into full.

Speaker 1 (28:53):
Ult Ultra Cowboys said. Patrick does his research in Spider Man.
Spider Man gear can neither confirm nor deny was the
Rocks on a shift.

Speaker 3 (29:02):
He was like, no comment, but yes, Cowboys are the
sixth team in NFL history to give up one hundred
and seventy five points and had two or fewer wins
in their first six games.

Speaker 6 (29:16):
M GB, that is not good.

Speaker 3 (29:17):
You want to know what happened to the rest of
those teams that happened along the way, the five previous teams.

Speaker 1 (29:22):
That did go to we're going to make us coy again. Yeah,
it's gonna happen.

Speaker 3 (29:26):
It happened twice in nineteen sixty one, the Oilers and
the Patriots. Patriots missed the playoffs. The Oilers actually won
the AFL championship. Yeah, back in nineteen sixty one. Everybody
remembers Houston Oiler teams.

Speaker 1 (29:40):
What about those Jeffersons not so fast? What about the
Rochester Jefferson No, they did never, They never achieved this.

Speaker 3 (29:46):
The twenty sixteen Saints, the twenty twelve Saints, and the
nineteen eighty five Bengals were the three previous teams to
achieve this feat. They all finished with the same record
seven wins, nine losses, and they all.

Speaker 1 (30:00):
All miss the playoffs. I'll leave you out adds this,
and I'll leave you and raise them us. If you
want to know why the Cowboys are below five hundred.
Cowboys offense is scoring an average of twenty nine points
seven points per game. Their defense is allowing an average
of thirty points seven points per game.

Speaker 6 (30:18):
That doesn't seem good.

Speaker 1 (30:19):
Math is math is the math. Math is not math.
Math is the math. So yeah, Unfortunately, the offense has
to play perfect. And is that fair?

Speaker 5 (30:27):
Noe?

Speaker 1 (30:27):
It's not fair to them to not be able to
make a single mistake. But until the defense at least
ratches it up two or three more notches, then the
Cowboys offense will have to do so. And that's why
it's that much more meaningful that Ceedee Lamb and Cavante
Turpin are backing them forward.

Speaker 6 (30:41):
What's sad is you can't bank on a stop on defense,
just a single one period.

Speaker 1 (30:47):
You just hope the clock right. You gotta score a
touchdown almost every time you go down the field, no man.

Speaker 3 (30:52):
So let's talk about how they match up against this
Washington offense. Washington gets Jaden Daniels back. Last week, they
fall against the Bay three and three.

Speaker 1 (31:01):
This is a hungry Commander's team. It was a crazy game.
Do we get an update on their health? Terry McLaurin
was back in practice. He was limited with a quad.
They're pretty healthy for the most part. I mean they've
got let me see Deebo, McLaurin, Noah Brown, all those
guys have been injured a win while you guys are
looking at a real quick answer for whos. None of

(31:24):
them are on the injury report.

Speaker 6 (31:25):
So unless they're on IR they only have our injury
report on their on their website.

Speaker 1 (31:30):
Oh that their injury report is. I've got it right here, Okay.

Speaker 3 (31:34):
Durrance was DMP with a hamstring. Durrance Armstrong, zach Ertz.
There was a lot of rested guys. Drake Jackson was
there with the knee, Chris Rodriguez, the running back, was
out with a calf, Terry McLaurin was limited with a quad,
Sam Cosney was full with a knee, Jaden.

Speaker 1 (31:52):
Daniels full with a knee, and then Jonathan Jones full
with a hamstring. Deebo didn't practice yesterday, but he's not
on the practice report. Just letting you know that he
is a heel injury. He's been beat up. Is he
on the IR list?

Speaker 3 (32:04):
No, he's not, then why was he not on the
practice That's a good question there, Kyle, the board on snitch.

Speaker 1 (32:10):
Yeah, if he's not on a list, why is he
not on the app?

Speaker 3 (32:15):
We had We had a reporter for the Washington Commander's
on He said he did not today.

Speaker 1 (32:21):
See what I don't get before today? Talent talent, talent,
real guarantee he's on there today though soon had a
science lab lab coat question. They asked, was the last
team that won or which of those teams in the
last twenty five years have had a defense ranked thirtieth
below zero? And then's to my point, you need to
have a defense that ranks at least averages. But I

(32:42):
will say more specifically, the Giants who won Super Bowl
forty six had the ninth ranked offense. They have had
a twenty fifth ranked defense.

Speaker 6 (32:50):
Hold on really quick, I just a side tangent really quickly?

Speaker 1 (32:54):
Yes or no?

Speaker 6 (32:56):
Do the Cowboys have the personnel to be a mid
ranked defense when healthy?

Speaker 1 (33:01):
When healthy? Yes, they can. They as is, I think
they can be made when healthy. I could be I
could see them like load twenties, but that not that
might not any load twenties. Load twenties with some takeaways,
I'd be fine, might get you, but you haven't been
able to get taken I am going to say, you
got one player.

Speaker 3 (33:18):
With an interception and his name is Donovan Wilson, and
he's the first safety since twenty sixteen to have mo
you're making my point interceptions in the first six games.

Speaker 1 (33:27):
The last guy to do that was Barry Church and
he's on our freaking podcast. You're making a point. You
need more interceptions, can get more takeaway be bad at everything,
you gotta be good at something. Yes, I say this
is a man defense and they're playing I'm gonna run
it back. I'm just gonna say, please, please, really majorty
of the contributors on defense. Where dan Quinn guys, as

(33:52):
we now know and we're about to find out for
those who do not know, dan Quinn plays man primarily.
These guys want to play man. They want to get
in your face, they want to jam you up, they
want to put hands on you. They want to stay
in your hip pocket and be lin in your pocket.
Doron Bland, Trayvon Diggs. When these guys were doing the

(34:12):
things that got them the contracts that they now have,
what coverage? Were they playing man man? They were taking
the ball away a lunch, That's what I mean. Did
you have quarterback pressure. Absolutely, you had quarterback pressure. But
this is a and that's what I'm hoping to see
Coach Eberflu's change because right now he's saying, Okay, this
is my system. Fit in my system. Yeah, through the

(34:36):
first six weeks, you're realizing that's not working so great, Alu.
Regardless of the fact that it is a good scheme
schematically it should work, it's not working for these guys. Yes,
So are you malleable in the sense that you can
now change and say, Okay, this is what I want
to do, but it's not working. Okay, how else can
we get to this? Occasionally while doing the things that

(34:58):
they exceed at I just.

Speaker 3 (34:59):
Had a flashback to twenty twenty. I just had a
flashback to Isaiah having the same conversation about a guy
named Mike Nolwan in twenty twenty on this very show.

Speaker 1 (35:09):
And then you got dan Quinn pepper form. Remember, but seriously,
that is what guys who are no longer here. I
like the Isaiah that takes breaths between. Seriously, guys who
are no longer here are exceeding elsewhere. Why they're being
asked to do to things that they were doing well here? Correct?

(35:31):
Jay Lou Correct is playing man down in Jacksonville, Na.
Sean Wright Correct is playing man in Chicago, and he
has multiple interceptions and recoveries. This is a man got
the personnel. Their skill set is man. That's not to
say that they can't play zone. That's be dumb for

(35:53):
me to sit up here say they can't play zone.
You can't. There's many ways that you can get to
zones while selling man. And you can get pressures and
get more turnovers when you allow your dogs to go eat.
And these receivers can't just run for the first eight
yards without being touched because after five yards, I don't
know if you guys know this. After five yard yards
is illegal. You can't touch. It's illegal to bump these

(36:14):
guys off their marts. So if I'm giving you five
yards to run your route, I can't touch you.

Speaker 6 (36:20):
For the fan, for the fans at home, Isaiah is
what Isaiah is saying is he desperately wants man.

Speaker 1 (36:27):
Yes, keep the man buns coming. He's very true, listen,
very true. I would much rather see us an instance
camp like that serious. I would much rather us if
we're going to lose on defense doing what you're doing
and be able to look at this guy and be like,
you got beat. I agree with that one hundred. That

(36:48):
guy across from you beat you. What are you going
to do about it? You can't leave it up to
the ski not sitting back seven yards off? And then
oh no, I had two guys that ran into my zone.
I chose the wrong one. No, take that element out.
I'm with you, I'm seriously, I'm I'm with you. Really,
I'm hopeful that Matt Eberfuls is like, you know what,

(37:08):
they're tired of what I'm doing. Bet here we go,
Let's try it your way. Yeah, it's slowly if only.

Speaker 6 (37:16):
The players are vocal about their desire to play man.

Speaker 5 (37:20):
Like a?

Speaker 1 (37:21):
Are they like a Trevon Diggs for example? I will
say since Trevon made that statement about, you know, bringing
that up to Matt Eberflu's, they've increased the amount of
man that they played, have they they did? It's going
up over the past couple of weeks. Now is it
WHEREA wants it to be? Which is where I would
also like to see it be.

Speaker 6 (37:39):
No, I have a stat for you. The Cowys do
you has deployed zone coverage on one hundred and fifty
eight of one hundred and sixty four dropbacks faced on
early downs this season, resulting in the highest rate in
the NFL ninety six point three percent.

Speaker 1 (37:52):
Just basically daring them to they're another teams to create
third and short.

Speaker 6 (37:56):
They have been more just daring you two. They've been
more willing to use man coverage third down, though their
rate at twenty seven point four percent still ranks the
fourth lowest in the NFL.

Speaker 1 (38:06):
And how good have they been on third down throughout
the year?

Speaker 6 (38:09):
Not good, Bob?

Speaker 1 (38:11):
Great? All right, we got to take our second break.

Speaker 3 (38:12):
When we come back, we continue our defensive preview against
the Washington offense. Jaydon Daniels has been playing a high
brand of football since he returned. How much can he
have an impact going into this matchup? When don't we
come back with moro right after this get your So.

Speaker 1 (38:27):
How's it going. You see that Cowboys game? Oh?

Speaker 5 (38:30):

you have some great talent, and they got some fight.

I didn't have a good pick.

Speaker 1 (41:26):
Either, bro, I had. I think I lost almost everyone.

Speaker 3 (41:29):
All right, Cowboys Seahawks defense versus the Washington offense.

Speaker 1 (41:34):
What does Washington do best on the offensive side of
the football?

Speaker 6 (41:38):
What does Washington do best?

Speaker 1 (41:40):
Keep you guessing? What's that? They are varied in their
looks in terms of motions, pre snaps, shifts. You can't
even just track a lot of times linebackers. As we're
talking about these linebackers. You you identify what the offensive
linemen are doing, right, So you track linemen even if
you can't see the ball a lot of times as linebackers,

(42:02):
which Kenneth Murray ran into this last week, you track
linemen right. So if I'm looking at the running back
and I see the left guard pulling, well, naturally, I'm
going to go to the right in the direction of
the left guard. That doesn't work necessarily against the Commanders
because they will literally send the play of the opposite direction.
They do a lot of misdirection with their personnel in
terms of receivers, in terms of running backs, quarterback runs,

(42:24):
a lot of zone read in terms of that is
a running game. Is the zone read And if those
that don't know what the zone read is, it's an
option where I can hand the ball off to the
running back and he can go to his zone or
I can keep it. Then I can now go outside
of the defensive end if the DN pinches, and I
can now run the ball aie with Jayden Daniels. They
are running screens off of that as well, so they

(42:44):
have a lot of different options on every play they
have an option, they have a screen option, and then
an option for Jade and Daniels to run. In their
passing game, they do a lot of things where he's
holding the ball this year. That's why I don't think
he's been as effective. He's holding the ball a lot
more than he was last year.

Speaker 3 (43:00):
See yeah, when it is going into break, I said
he's played well since coming back from injury, and you went, yeah,
give me the koy Isaiah. Yeah, I do have some
stats to back up what I'm saying. Daniels one to
ten passer rating since returning from injury. He missed weeks
three and four, He's been back for five and six.
Prior to the injury, it was only ninety one. And
you're going up against the Cowboys defense that has allowed

(43:22):
a one to seventeen passer rating to every quarterback they've
faced so far, which is the worst stat since they
started keeping passer rating as an official stat.

Speaker 1 (43:31):
In the NFL. And the Dallas defense has been the
worst at at all of them.

Speaker 6 (43:35):
And if we're still on top of what Washington does best,
I think it's like the exotic route trees that they're running.
They went running a lot of crossers. They're getting guys
out in space. They they're very killing Moore esque with
the way that they tried to spread the ball around
and spread their receivers around the field. If and if
you're the Dallas Cowboys, the one thing that you want
to be able to do is rush the passer.

Speaker 1 (43:56):
Yeah. Another thing you want to run into another issue
you're going to run into. Sure, Yeah that's the thing. Yeah,
that's the thing.

Speaker 6 (44:04):
Do you want to be able to do that?

Speaker 1 (44:05):
Yeah, laughing face emoji. So so there. I mean, there
are things, many things that any of the commanders do
well but can be neutralized if you have a sufficient defense.
But as we have this conversation, this defense has only
proven to be sufficient once, No, twice, I'll give him
that against the equals as well, Sure twice two times

(44:26):
through the first six games. And the math is math.
That means more often than not, you're not playing good football.
So what you need to keep in mind is not
only Terry McLaurin, not only crosskey merit because they're still
running the ball effectively without Austin Eckler. Okay, you know
Jaydon Daniels can extend plays. You know he would love
to break contain. You know, he would love to rack
up some rushing yards. And you know, just keep you

(44:47):
guessing is he going to cross the line of scrimmage
or is he going to keep his eyes downfield and
find a guy like McLaurin. I say all that to say,
keep an eye on Zach Ertz in this game. Your
linebackers are struggling in coverage, and this could very It
will be a game where everybody's eyeing, you know, Crosskey
Marrit and everybody's eyeing Jaydon Daniels, and everybody's eyeing Terry McLaurin,
and Zach Ertz sneaks behind you and gets two three

(45:08):
touchdowns on you. No, So keep an eye on Zach
Hurtz because when you're talking about wiley veterans who are
still capable of playing at a high level, he is,
he is what And then of course you know he's
kind of made a career of making things difficult for
the Dallas Cowboys. Yep, So he has that added motivation
whenever he sees the star lining up against him. So
keep an eye on that, Zach guy. And I don't

(45:29):
mean uh, I don't mean Lisa Turtle's best friend.

Speaker 3 (45:33):
So you're telling me that their tight end has had
success against the Cowboys, no matter who is the defensive coordinator,
no matter.

Speaker 1 (45:40):
What age, no matter what whatever.

Speaker 3 (45:43):
They have wide receivers that are running crisp and clean
and elaborate routes.

Speaker 6 (45:48):
And exotic if you will.

Speaker 3 (45:50):
Prior to the snap, there are a lot of misdirection
and a lot of motions that are going to really
challenge your team to be gap disciplined and be able
to know identify where they're going.

Speaker 6 (46:00):
You just have to have a good communication, buddy.

Speaker 1 (46:02):
So ultimately it's all playing back to communication that's gonna
do it for us. You're on can you hear me now? No? No,
That's the thing is this team can't communicate on the
defensive cyder of the football, all of those things. It's
not that sea word.

Speaker 3 (46:19):
If all of those things can't happen, then boom, You're
you've got a bad matchup.

Speaker 1 (46:26):
It's ultimately what you guys are to use that sea work, hut.

Speaker 6 (46:28):
And what we've talked about yesterday in our offensive preview
is the one thing that you can't do is give
the ball back to the commanders. You have to be
able to control the ball all game long. I'm thirty
eight minutes take up time is humanly possible. Eight minutes
delay of game every.

Speaker 1 (46:47):
Play, control time of position, second on the takeaway margin
by at least plus one, at least plus two would
be ideal.

Speaker 3 (46:58):
Even even Shotty said he was like and I was
disappointed that we won the turnover battle on Sunday, but we.

Speaker 1 (47:03):
Lost the game. It's like, yeah, that's kind of how
bad the team play. Can't because because of what Kingsbury
does offensively, we're about to get out of here. I
think this is probably the most challenging communication wise matchup
that Dallas has standpoint from a scheme standpoint, because they

(47:25):
don't have to push the ball down the field. They
don't have to just turn around the hand the ball off.
They have a quarterback who can run and who is
they literally scheme him to run. They have a running
back who is explosive and and and Jacobe with the
Crosby Merrit He's explosive. I like him a lot. The

(47:45):
ball can get out to dee Bo. Samuel's at the
line of scrimmage, scary Terry. I don't think he's gonna
be fully healthy. I truly don't. Still still a threat, Yeah,
but they can they This is a team that is
perfectly you can go back to last year. This is
a team who was perfectly okay taking these high precision passes,

(48:06):
these little closer line of scrimmage plays and working their
way down the field. Yep, like they are. They're good
with that, They're patient with that. And they have a
quarterback who doesn't make a lot of mistakes. This is
it's gonna be challenging. What we're saying is it's a
good thing. CD is likely back because the shootout. Our
offense might need to score forty seven shootout, Yeah, maybe
forty eight, maybe depending on the game. Maybe.

Speaker 3 (48:27):
All right, that does actually do it for us here
on Talking Cowboys. Enjoyed our last forty five minutes or so.

Patrick No C Walker, Josh Rodriguez, Isaiah standback, Chris Beam
