Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the Fitsy and Whipper with Kate Richie podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
You're going over to New York? Now are you going
over next week? We're going over very quick to the
United Nations. This is in New York for thirty six months.
Huge press release.
Speaker 1 (00:14):
Yeah, you know what it's like when the United Nations
call fits happens each week. I get a call and
I don't know that number and they go bloody United Nations.
They're on the phone again. No, this is a special
one and this should be a real moment of national pride.
This has all to do with thirty six months and
the Prime Minister's stance and the Commonwealth saying to big
Tech that we're going to put Australian families first. We're
(00:37):
going to put Australian teenagers and the well being of
them first. So this is the new social media laws
which will come into action and into play on the tenth.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
Of December this year. But see, this is the thing.
It's not just Australia.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
You're going to be meeting with world leaders and policymakers
to see if they would do something similar in their countries.
Speaker 1 (00:57):
Yeah, they called as well and said we need you there. No,
the idea that we're there is We're obviously played a
part in making sure that the message was heard, and
we represent one hundred and fifty thousand people that sign
the petition, myself and Rob Galuzzo from Finch and it
should be a moment of pride. You know, the Prime
Minister has made a really brave decision to take on
(01:20):
big tech is a big thing.
Speaker 3 (01:22):
And it's our boy going to be there.
Speaker 1 (01:24):
Yes, he's going to be there. So the event will
take place at the United Nations. There's world leaders that
are invited to be part of it and also people
of influence to let them know. And I think this
is the important part that you know what, you can
put your foot down and you can put the teenagers first.
We know that it is having a devastating effect on
our teenagers. That's the big thing. Fits And we've got
(01:45):
one hundred and fifty thousand mums and dads that assigned
the petition who have said this is the this is
a major concern in our household right now and we
need to change things.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
Okay, So the biggest question that everyone's saying is December ten,
it kicks in. So I've got a twelve year old
at home who wants to get on Snapchat. So from
December tenth, how is this going to roll out? So
how is he going to get a Snapchat account or
can he?
Speaker 3 (02:12):
And what are you going to put into place on
that date? Whip.
Speaker 1 (02:14):
Well, look, there's nothing that is a silver baller in
this situation. The law needs to change and then the
behavior needs to change. That's the important things thing. There's
three ways you could do it. Those fits. One is
some sort of ID Now the government has come out
and said that they will not ask for any further
identification because people are obviously nervous about putting any further
details into these platforms, so they've said that's not what
(02:36):
it's going to do. The other one is the estimate
of your age. That's the second place. So the social
media platforms have got the technology based on your appearance
to narrow it down within the year of your age.
TikTok proved this over a year ago and they identified
seventy million people that were underage on their platform. Million
(02:57):
of them were in Australia. The next one is your
behavior online. So if you're sixty years old and you're
on Instagram, well there's a good chance you're going to
be chatting to somebody or your interests might be caravanning
around Australia.
Speaker 3 (03:10):
Well you're not playing roadblocks. I know you're not.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
So you're if you're spending more time looking at K
pop demon hunter content, well there's a good chance you're
going to be a younger plus. So if you can
combine the look technology, your appearance and your behavior, that
helps narrow it down. So for somebody, let's say Lenny's
on there and he's underage, if he's identified by the platform,
(03:34):
and that's the expectation for the government, if he's identified
on the tenth of December to be underaged, then his
account will be closed.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
See the other what we need to talk about though,
it's for any parent out there.
Speaker 3 (03:47):
It's not just about the ID and all this kind
of stuff.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
I know that there's a lot of people saying it
is because if kids want to get.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
On there, they'll find a way to do it. The
big thing is for all parents out there is.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
That you can now say to your child it's I'm sorry,
but it's just now illegal. You've got to be sixteen
before you can get a social media again, and you
need to.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
Put yeah, you need to pull back the lens two
fits and go. This is not the absolute solution here,
but I'll tell you what. By the time Ted is thirteen,
by the time my five year old Francesca is thirteen,
this will be the new behavior. So we have to
look beyond what the tenth of December will be. But
I hope, I do you proud In New York Man,
it's not too late to get.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
Out of going over to see Sabrina carp.
