Speaker 2 (00:38):
Welcome inside the Locker Room with kingon Stark's presented by
your neighborhood Ford Store on the Steelers Audio Network.

Speaker 3 (00:44):
Coming to you from.

Speaker 2 (00:45):
Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, where the field is being
moistened by a slight rain.

Speaker 3 (00:52):
Where we were discussing prior to coming on the air.

Speaker 4 (00:55):
So we apologize for anybody out there that apparently that
is an offensive word to some people. Yeah, that is
a word that that could strike a lot of iron
real quick.

Speaker 3 (01:04):
So how would you describe this field otherwise? Wet?

Speaker 2 (01:07):
I suppose would work super wet. The field is being wetted. Yes,
that sounds a little like an issue that needs to
be taken here. Watered being watered, National Watering, I guess
we could call it that. So hopefully though it sounds
like the weather's going to clear up this afternoon going
to be great for practice.

Speaker 3 (01:24):
I shortened a little bit yesterday.

Speaker 4 (01:26):
It was shortened by the same conditions that we're witnessing
right now. And if anybody that was up here in
Latrobe knows, like there's a lightning warning early and that's
what initially sent the players off before the rain happened,
and then they were told to shelter in place up
in the up in the locker room for thirty minutes,
and then if any lightning hit anytime during that thirty minutes,
that's when practice got canceled. So second lightning strike within

(01:49):
a ten mile radius happened, so therefore practice was canceled completely.
And you know, I guess walkthrough is going to be
probably in the gym now if it's raining right now, right,
that's right, going to get on the field. Look at
guys doing football like activity.

Speaker 3 (02:03):
Which is a little bit disappointing you not his football
like hatt.

Speaker 4 (02:06):
He's not actually like they're moving, yeah, throwing, catching and blocking.

Speaker 3 (02:11):
Yay. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
I I remember going to a Grateful Dead concert back
in the day in the early eighties, early to mid eighties,
and I think that I think the Dead Clothes with
Johnny be Good maybe his revolution. Anyway, Uh, Jerry Garcia
like flexed his knees and everyone was like, oh my gosh,
Jerry moved.

Speaker 3 (02:32):
He moved. Look at him like you were just standing there. Yea,
So the players moved or not.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
It's not it's it's not Chuck Berry, it's not uh,
it's not real football, football like activities. Now, some news
yesterday after we uh we went off the air, the
signing of Chuck Clark.

Speaker 3 (02:52):
Yeah, what are your thoughts on that?

Speaker 4 (02:54):
Longtime raven? Then you know we had that question mark
drawn on the depth chart about safety, Well what does
Chuck Clark play?

Speaker 3 (03:02):
Play safety?

Speaker 4 (03:03):
So now you're putting more bodies in that room to compete.
And I mean he's a ninth year guy. You know,
he's been a majority of his career with Baltimore, six
of those years injured a year and then last with
the Jets. Surprise surprise running theme here bringing a former
Jet over and a former AFC North alumni. So you know,

(03:24):
I like it. I mean, you think you know you're
add in that room. You got wan Thornhill, you have
Deshaun Elliott, you have Jalen Ramsey who's been playing a
lot of safety slash that nickel slot type of position.
And now you added Chuck Clark into there, another veteran
and goes along with you know, we're talking about Sabasian
Castro and also Miles Killerbrew who are also in that room.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
But you know, we know what Miles is.

Speaker 4 (03:45):
Miles is the Special Team's ace pro bowler every year
for that position, so he's not necessarily competing for the
starting role. But this is something to give you some
depth and some veteranness in that room and create some competition.
Maybe some things they saw the first couple of days,
like I just need to bust us a little bit more.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
You know, we were discussing yesterday to Sean Elliott and
how much I loved this signing last year and how
much he was one of those guys to me that
turned out to be an even better player when I
got to see him every game than when I got
to see him, you know, every play twice a year
and several other times, you know, watching other Ravens games.
I've always always loved the Sean Elliott's game, and like

(04:23):
I said, I think he's better than I thought he
was going to be, and that happened. Sometimes you see
a guy you know all the time and you think, boy,
there's a lot of things he does that he does
better than I thought.

Speaker 3 (04:35):
I always like Chuck Clark's game. I like him now.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
The injury in twenty twenty three, I can't say I
recall much of him playing last year with the Jets.
I don't even know if he was in the game
when this Yeers played him. I don't recall honestly, But
you know, you wonder about a guy coming off an
ACL injury. He missed twenty three, but he started twelve games.
He played and started in twelve games for the Jets
last year. He's been a starter in the NF and

(05:01):
I guess we'll see what he's got in the tank.
But I always I always liked his game.

Speaker 4 (05:06):
Yeah, no, I like he's always been solid coverage guy,
great communicator on the back end. I mean, you know,
watching him when he was primarily a Raven, but like
you said, not seeing much of him during his Jets tenure.
But I've heard all good things, you know, because Willie
Cologne's up here my right, my brother and he's doing
the scouting internship and none Woton scouting internship. So he

(05:26):
got in yesterday and I asked him like he's like, yeah, man,
I mean, Chuck was solid. I mean, but you know,
the team was dysfunctional. So it's like, you know, he
kind of you know, falls by the wayside because he
just did his job right, which you know, and a
lot of intensive persons people don't like to hear that
all the time, like, oh, he just did it. I
need somebody to pop and flash. But it's like, if
you do your job all intents and purposes on a
football team, you shouldn't really know who you are unless

(05:49):
it's interceptions or big plays. But he was a He's
a solid tackler. Things didn't get past him, and he
was a guy that made plays on the ball. So
I'm like, okay, well we could use that. You know,
he could always use a guy who actual he moves
and plays and does his job.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
You know, there is a lot of value with that
expression does his job. I mean, you know, I think
about Ryan Clark. Ryan Clark did his job. He did
a little more than his job too. He would punish you,
but by doing his job and being like, Okay, we
don't have to worry about him. Yeah, He's going to
be exactly where we need him to be. He's going
to do exactly what we need him to do. He's

(06:23):
going to be very good at all those things that
frees up Troy Polamalo to do all the Troy Polamalo
things if you have somebody unreliable next to him. That's
why I thought when Deshaun came in, I thought, Okay,
this might free up Minka to do more things because
Deshaun Elliott does his.

Speaker 3 (06:41):
Job and more.

Speaker 4 (06:42):
Yeah, and I think, I think, and that's what you
want to see.

Speaker 3 (06:45):
I want to say more, he does his job at
a high level.

Speaker 4 (06:49):
Yeah exactly, Yeah, yeah, no, And I think I think
you're right about that. And like you said, having that
experience being a former Raven, maybe there's a comfortability with
Deshaun Elliott back there and they have that kind of mojo.
I mean, I think when you look at wan Thornhill,
when you look at Sean Elliott, both of them bring
a very physical, thumper in the box nature to them.
So you really need that true roving kind of free

(07:11):
safety to play that center fielder, so to speak. On
the defensive back half, and so you wonder if Chuck
can do that. Obviously, that's I think one of the
reasons why you trade for Jalen Ramsey because he has
that versatility to play inside outside safety. He can give
you all three corners. And you know, when I was
talking to a lot of the coaches and the scouts,
you know, they're saying, Jalen Ramsey when he came out, yea,
like he was the number one corner and the number

(07:32):
one safety right and everybody's books and and and it's like,
I know, I know, I know. Andy Whide was talking
about how he's like, yeah, man, I mean, Ozzie Newsom
was trying to make a play for him to jump
up and get him, because they were like, this dude
can do it all, so why wouldn't you try and
take that guy. But of course they couldn't pull the
trigger as a draft pick compensation thing. But when you

(07:52):
see that and then you see a guy come here,
and then you realize you're like, oh, yeah, this dude
was that guy. I mean I hated him at FSU No, sure, yeah,
because he's terrorized my gators. But I mean, but you're
talking about that talent level and being able to have that,
the more things you can throw into the pot, and
the more you can kind of kind of give guys
a definitive role, you know, coming out here, and then
you kind of start to nuance it out. H I

(08:15):
think that works for everybody. And so if you can
give Jalen Ramsey where he's not playing the free safety
position and he's able to play more slot corner, if
that's what you want them to play, he can now
focus in a little bit more and you can put
like a Chuck Clark back there and have him rove around.
But that's a good problem to have, to have too
many good players at one position group.

Speaker 2 (08:32):
Right, Nobody has ever said, No nobody in any sport,
no GM or coaching staff has ever wrung their hands
and said, we're in big trouble.

Speaker 3 (08:40):
We have too many good players, we have too many
good things here and whatnot.

Speaker 4 (08:44):
It's like going to a buffet. It's like going to
your favorite buffet.

Speaker 3 (08:46):
Right.

Speaker 4 (08:47):
It's like nobody's ever complained, Man, you got you guys
have too many good things. I need you, I need
you to minimize this. It's like no, it's like give
me more, and I just got to find extra space
and loopholes.

Speaker 3 (08:55):
In my belt. Yes work, So I do think.

Speaker 2 (08:59):
You know, we're talking by John new Smith yesterday, and
I think John new Smith they got him. He's gonna play, right,
So you know there's well you got two other tight ends. Well,
John Smith's gonna play now. They're going to figure out
where how how to distribute all this time and the
playing time. And you know Pat Fryarmouth obviously he's a
terrific tight end. Darnel Washington, you know, big guy you

(09:20):
can block, and I think came into his own got
soft hands, man, you get him out in the flat.

Speaker 3 (09:25):
We hit a little pass yesterday out in the flat.

Speaker 2 (09:28):
And I'm like, oh, if you're a corner, you're ground
hogging to try to You're like, really, really, how low
can you go to try to get darn Hill's on the.

Speaker 4 (09:37):
Ground because you can't go high. You can't go high.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
It's like you know, first of all, you're not tall
enough to go high. No, but you don't want to
go there anyway, Yeah.

Speaker 4 (09:45):
Because you have to leave your feet rights exactly, zero
power that you can. And you're also looking for friends, right,
You're like, who else could come jump on the pile here, guys,
I'm gonna slow him. I'm not going to stop him.
There's a difference between another four letter words and I
start with S, but they end very different.

Speaker 3 (10:04):
So so when you when you look at so John,
who's gonna play it?

Speaker 2 (10:08):
And you know Arthur Smith said, we did not bring uh,
you know, Aaron Rodgers here to hand the ball off. Well,
the Steelers did not go out and get Jalen Ramsey
after they signed Darius Slay, so that you know they
rotate in a corner.

Speaker 3 (10:22):
Now, those three guys.

Speaker 2 (10:24):
As much as much as they can, as much as
they're healthy, as much as you know the endurance and
the and the demands of the game, you know you're
gonna have to get a spell now and again, those
three guys are gonna be on the field. And whether
that is somebody in the slot or somebody at like
Jalen Ramsey at that free safety position, they'll be on
the field.

Speaker 4 (10:42):
No, no playmakers make play, so right would you keep
your playmakers on the sideline? And like you said, and
I think also it's a week two week prospect as well, right,
because you have to be able to match what you're
going to see and the reason why we bring in
Jalen Ramsey, we bring in a Darius lay is because
we know what the division looks like, right right. We
know what's over in Cincinnati, we know what's down in Baltimore.

(11:04):
I mean, we'll figure out what's in Cleveland. But I
mean I can tell you their title gives you a
lot of inklings of what they are. It is brown
flush it. But but you want to make sure that
you're that you're mastering your division because what as Mike
Tomins said from day one as a coach, and it
carries and rings true division dominance precedes anything else. You've

(11:26):
got to win your division if you want that golden
taken into the playoffs. So that's what you're seeing. You're
seeing a team and roster that's built to manage the division,
and you hope that that also correlates to the bigger
picture what Aaron Rodgers was talking about in his interview.
You know, realistically there's usually six to eight and you
know sometimes you get ten to twelve, and we hope
to be in that ten to twelve, right.

Speaker 2 (11:46):
You know, I like the addition to Malie Harrison at linebacker,
thought he you know, his elevation last year really helped
was one of those factors that helped the Ravens defense
stabilize after they've been struggling. People forget that they were
you look, they were really struggling at the beginning of
the last season. Yeah, Harrison was one of those guys.
His elevation to the starting role I think was one

(12:06):
of those things that helped bring that defense around. Obviously
they brought in, you know, a different coordinator to oversee
things and that sort of thing. But when I look
at the inside linebacker group, So if you look at
the Steelers defense right their base defense, you know you're
going to have two down defensive linemen, you know that
high Smith and Watt. As you look at the starters,

(12:28):
they're going to be on the field, right. The three
guys that we just mentioned, the three corners, Joey Porter,
Junior Sleigh, and Jaalen Ramsey, they're gonna be on the field.
The Shawn Elliott's going to be on the field. And
when you have the kind of speed that the Steelers
have an inside linebacker, you know, Patrick Queen can run,

(12:48):
Peyton Wilson can run, Cole Holcomb, assuming he's healthy, he
can run. So how does that change what you might
do schematically. Because this defense, and again we talked about
Omar Khan and the improvements.

Speaker 3 (13:02):
That he's made this this defense, they're back to being fast.
They got a little slow there for a couple of years.
This this defense can move well.

Speaker 4 (13:12):
They can move. And I think the other thing is
the reason why the Ravens were so bad was because
we took Patrick Queen from them, right, yea, So now
we're poaching another guy that helps stabilize them in Malik Harrison.
And now you bring that kind of similar skill set,
so you're saying, Okay, Pat Queen's not and maybe Malik
Harrison's the guy that said right, you know, and then
you have Cole and Peyton maybe working in their rotation

(13:35):
to help as well, so you know, it's never a problem.
Once again, just like we talked about, we have too
many good players. Also, you can't coach speed, and it's like,
oh my god, we got too many fast guys. We
need to get slower guys. You're never gonna hear a
coach say that, no, unless it's the on line position.

Speaker 3 (13:50):
It's like, ah, he's too quick for us.

Speaker 4 (13:52):
Maybe we need to get a little slower sturdy boy,
and it's more so maybe in the interior not the
tackle position, but I think it can only help. And
like you said, healthy competition makes for a better team, right.
And so when you get guys who have starting experience,
you get guys who are known leaders, and you put
them in a room. Now you get to see where
the cream rises to the top and those situations. And

(14:13):
I think Malie Harrison kind of fits in that mold
of that current room. And he also has a relationship
with Patrick Queen coming in here. You know, it's not
like he's coming in here brand new and trying to
figure everybody out. He has a resource to talk to.
And then, like you said, you've got a good mix
of young and experienced guys at that position, which also
helps you to calm things down. If Peyton Wilson starts
to get a little bit too hot now, you know,

(14:34):
and just just all over the place and get a
little uneasy, you can now set a steadying force in
there for a couple of plays or a series and say, hey,
bring you to the sideline we can talk. Because that's
the worst thing is when you need to coach a
guy mid game and you don't have the resources to
pull that guys like, he's just got to get in
there and then it can snowball for him, and you
don't want that to happen. So now you can pull

(14:55):
and you can you know, kind of bait and switch.
You're guys are a lot of different positions. Is to
help those young guys kind of integrate into the game
and kind of get a slower approach to just throwing
them in the fire.

Speaker 2 (15:05):
Well, I agree, and I also think that you know
another thing that has happened with this with this team.
And we're just talking about the defense for right now,
but look back to a couple of years ago, as
twos are trying to find a way into the playoff picture,
and they're calling guys in week eleven saying, hey, you
got any can you still play linebacker?

Speaker 3 (15:26):
We'd like you to come up here.

Speaker 4 (15:27):
Places and put on shoulder pass. You still know how
to do that?

Speaker 5 (15:31):
Right?

Speaker 2 (15:32):
I mean think about they were doing that and now
you have four definite NFL caliber linebackers and I'm I'm
you know, I'm besmirching their abilities by saying NFL caliber
because they're, as Mike Tomin likes to say, they are
above the line all four of those guys. Now you
add Jack Sawyer at the outside linebacker position, you have

(15:55):
herbig with the two guys you have there. Yesterday we
touched on the defensive line depth that if everybody stays
healthy knocking on wood, now that you're probably a good
player or two is going to be cut. And now
you added you know, the question we were talking about
was the safety position. Now you add Chuck Clark and
so the depth on paper looks great. I'm also intrigued

(16:19):
to see if schematically, you know, they were yesterday there
was some movement around with TJ. Watt and high Smith,
and I suspect we're going to see more of that.
I suspect we're going to see more creativity because I
think they've got the kind of personnel to be able
to do different things. I'm really intrigued and really bullish
about what I think this defense can accomplish well.

Speaker 4 (16:38):
And I think also to that point, like with TJ,
like yesterday, you know, he wasn't doing any real life
team jos. He did an individual and stuff. But Jack
Sawyer was playing opposite Alex high Smith yesterday, so I
was like, okay, So the fact that he's already getting
those those what I call grown man reps right by
going up against the ones and being in a starting
rotation bodes well because that's something.

Speaker 3 (16:59):
We didn't have a year ago. We didn't have that
fourth pass rush right right.

Speaker 4 (17:02):
We had to move Nick Herbig everywhere. And we're trying
to figure out who could be this guy? And you
know where Demarvin Leal before he gets injured is like
that elephant in we talked about yesterday, and we're trying
to say, okay, well who else can be? Stand up? Then?
I think they tried louder Milk at one point because
Julius Westoff, who.

Speaker 3 (17:20):
Was the German player you know camp last year.

Speaker 4 (17:23):
He looked great in camp and you know, Wolf effectually
called him the German knife maker, and uh, I was like,
so you know what, I probably would have bought some
Westchoff knives, you know, like well wedding gift, you know,
you put that on the registry.

Speaker 3 (17:36):
Funny story for you guys.

Speaker 6 (17:37):
Yesterday, I'm leaving the cafeteria after dinner and it's dumping
down rain and he is walking out right behind me,
and he, like in his German, in his German voice, goes,
oh no, I rode my scooter here. I can't ride
scooter in this and I was like, yeah, that's a
good idea. You do not need to be sliding around
on your scooter out here on campus in this raine.
Just wait a few minutes, it'll die like no, Julius, no, no,

(18:00):
we need you help Starr.

Speaker 3 (18:02):
Scooter accident during training camp.

Speaker 2 (18:04):
By the way, that is the that is Wes Yuler
jumped in and Wes will be here for the second
hour today and the second hour tomorrow. The second hour
today because I'm going to be heading over to the
Fred Rogers Center as part of the Hall of Honor class.
The unveiling of the twenty twenty five Hall of Honor
class is that today. That is today, and it's going
to be unveiled at noon today right here on Steelers Station.

Speaker 3 (18:26):
Got it good. A way to get it in there,
west way to get the plug in there.

Speaker 2 (18:30):
Very nice, But you know it is it is uh
to me again when I look at this defense early on,
not only am I pleased with the depth, but I'll
be extremely extremely interested to see how these guys are
going to be deployed. And also, you know, we talked
about this in terms of you know, setting yourself up

(18:51):
for the draft, as students have always done a great
job with that of at least having a plausible team
that you could run out there in September, having that
as you go, you know, in the mid late April
into the draft, having that, and then that allows you
in the draft to pick players that maybe pop up
and they don't fill a definite need, but they're such
good football players you want them. Well, you mentioned like

(19:12):
a Demarvin Leale, a welsh Off at outside linebacker, other
guy Sebastian Castro. These guys, now you have the bedrock
of a team that doesn't have maybe a whole lot
of room, but there is still a little room for
somebody to jam their way in and say I deserve
playing time. It's it's really a wonderful balance. And you know,

(19:33):
fewer jobs I think available on paper and again staying
healthy than we've seen in years past.

Speaker 3 (19:41):
So that just makes the competition that much more fearce.

Speaker 4 (19:44):
It does, and like you said, opportunity, you know, is
a plenty because like I said, we're gonna have these
playoff games, We're gonna have these preseason games, and guys
are gonna get playing time right, Like, so you need
bodies to fill to finish out these games. And you
also have the joint practices with Tampa Bay, so these
guys are gonna have a great opportunity to really show themselves.

(20:06):
And you know, you hate to say it, but injuries
are a part of the game, right, So you want
to make sure you also have your short list ready.
And you know we're gonna see a little bit of
smoking mirrors, little three card MONI going on towards the end,
to make sure you're hiding enough guys so you can
bring them on your practice squad, so you have the
stable ready so to speak, you know, and you know
all about that, like trying to keep guys in your

(20:27):
farm league. It's like, say, hey, we got to call
this guy off for at least ten days. We've got
a guy you know, it's on a DL. I mean,
the same thing happens with the Steelers. Like you want
to keep a good stable of sixteen players in your
practice squad so that you can elevate breakdown depending on
the week to be that kind of what I call
forty nine through fifty three, right, you know, those are
those those four players there that you need to four

(20:48):
to five guys that you might have to elevate and
move down depending on who the opponent is. You know,
I need to carry extra D lineman this week, so
maybe I bring up a guy and move down an
extra dB or an extra running back maybe, And so
you want to be able to play that game. But
you got these guys here, so you're gonna evaluate them,
and you're gonna rank all of these guys to get
down to fifty three from ninety five.

Speaker 2 (21:09):
Well, we saw last year and we're gonna see Jacobe
Winman with the Carolina Panthers coming up in a few weeks.
I think it's the last pre selling game for the Steelers.
But he was a guy that got plucked off the
Steelers uh you know, practice squad last year, then then
started playing for them, and he's he looks like he's
going to be part of what they're trying to do forward.

(21:30):
So you know, you you want, like you said, you
want to get those guys out there.

Speaker 3 (21:33):
Hey, we love this guy. Guess what every other team
is scouting you too.

Speaker 2 (21:37):
And scouting your practice squad and so, uh yeah, it's
a it's a little bit of.

Speaker 4 (21:41):
A sometimes you're helping guys sometimes You're like, no, we're
self serving ourselves, right, that's right.

Speaker 3 (21:48):
Yeah, that's right. So the rain has picked up. Uh,
wonder what that's gonna do for no longer wedding the field.
It's now drenching. Yes, the field is uh, yes, drenched.

Speaker 6 (21:59):
Just we can't use that in in other word, yeah,
we're gonna avoid that much more.

Speaker 2 (22:03):
Still, the come of some interesting comments about the Steelers
rookie running back from head coach Mike Tomlin. Yesterday, You're
in the locker room at King and Stark's, presented by
your neighborhood Ford Store. Here on the Steer Theer's Audio network.

Speaker 5 (22:20):
Iheartradios.

Speaker 3 (22:56):
Well.

Speaker 2 (22:57):
Welcome back inside the locker room from Saint Vincent College.

Speaker 3 (23:01):
In the trope rain is abating slightly. I think that's accurate,
don't you.

Speaker 4 (23:05):
I would I would concur with your assessment, sir.

Speaker 3 (23:10):
Okay, So what will happen now? What will happen now
with practice? Will they if it rains in the field's wet?
Is it full go?

Speaker 2 (23:21):
Hey, you gotta deal with it, or is it hey,
let's be careful out there. We don't want any soft
tissue injuries. You don't want somebody rolling an ankle or
a knee or how will this go?

Speaker 4 (23:29):
Yeah, I mean it'll still be full go because football
is football, right, Like, you're gonna deal with this in season.
They're not gonna say, all right, guys, hey it's too wet,
we can't go play the game. Exactly exactly because I
remember a time, and you know it was we were
playing the Miami Dolphins and they decided to reside the field,
and because a storm was coming in, they decided that,

(23:51):
you know, we're not gonna tear up the old field.
We're just gonna we're gonna sod on top. But the
storm comes in, they can't get to tarping fast enough.
So now the tarp is waterproof both ways, so it
keeps in moisture and it doesn't allow additional moisture in.
So we get to the game. It's night. It's Sunday night,

(24:12):
primetime football yesterday, and I'm running out because Marvel Smith.
This is back when I was actually backing up Marvel,
when I was switching for right tackle left tackle, and
Bell can't go. So they're like, hey, Max, you know
you're starting. I'm like, well, thanks for the heads up.
Let me go get warmed up. So I get my
cleats on, I get my outfit, you know, I get

(24:34):
my workout outfit on, and I'm running out to the field.
I'm like, I need to, you know, move and do
some sets and kind of get myself mentally ready. Tarp
is still on the field and I'm like, hey, you
need to warm up. They're like, yeah, you're gonna do
that in the hallway. I was like, what what do
you mean in the hall Yeah, yeah, no, we gotta
make sure the field sets. That's what they told me.

(24:56):
Old groundskeeper Willie was like, hey, we gotta we gotta
lit field set. So I'm like, this does not sound
like a good thing. Like I have not been to
a football game in my life up to that point,
had never been rejected from warming up pregame on a
grass football field, right, And so I'm like, all right,
well cool. They don't take the tarpa off till thirty
minutes before game time. When I tell you, it looked

(25:20):
like like mush and they were like spray paying to
make everything look clear for camera. Man, I stepped foot
on that field because we didn't touch it till we.

Speaker 3 (25:30):
Ran out for the intros. Was this a Monday night game?

Speaker 4 (25:32):
Yes, yes, I'm sorry, Monday night against the Dolphins, not
Sunday night.

Speaker 3 (25:35):
It was Monday night.

Speaker 4 (25:37):
And when I tell you, my foot sunk immediately into
the ground like above my laces. I was like, oh crap,
this is going to be terrible. And mind you, I'd
already remember in my history a hurricane game against said
Miami Dolphins down in Miami and the Marlins were still

(25:58):
in the playoffs. They were getting ready for the World
Series that year in four and we had a hurricane
and we had clay an old double duty stadium, right old,
old old Joe Robbie Stadium. And I'm like, and at
least then I was still allowed to go work out
and warm up. Even though I didn't have a uniform,
I still went and did my little, my little non
dress guy warm up workout in the rain. But this

(26:21):
was something else. I mean we went in and it
was like PLoP, and I mean your feet were so
I'll never forget this. So I'm sitting there and we
get out for the first series and and the Dolphins
have on all white, like the worst color you could
possibly wear for this game, and Jason Taylor just looks
at me like what's up.

Speaker 3 (26:43):
JT He's like, hey, Starksy.

Speaker 4 (26:46):
It's like, as long as this jersey stays white, we
have no problem.

Speaker 3 (26:50):
I was like, what do you mean?

Speaker 4 (26:51):
Because because his speed was neutralized, this is a game
for me against Jason Taylor. I could dump this dude.
He's tall as hell and he's and he's light. So
I'm like, man, if I get hands on you, it's
it's it's bye bye, like sweet Marie, We're about to
have a great game. And then he looked at me
like hey. I was like, I'm I'm gonna give you.
I'm gonna give you some hard steps I retrace. He's like,

(27:12):
don't you do it, don't you do it? So I
was like, man, I'm like, this is Jason Tayn is
a Hall of Famer. I'm like to give And we
ended up getting through that game. That was a three
zero game. That was a lawn dart, you know. Mitch
Berger punts it in and then and that's the image
going into into the commercial break, is this ball stuck
halfway into the ground and Jay Reid makes this miraculous

(27:32):
I don't know how the heck Jay Reid kicked in
that and and Jay Feely was struggling. Jay Peely could
not find footing. He was trying to like stamp stomp
it down, but all he was doing was making a
mud hole when he was trying to create a spot
for the ball to be.

Speaker 3 (27:47):
I blocked the.

Speaker 4 (27:47):
First kick, yeah, and and then they're like, uh it
was it was it was a lay of game. I'm like,
you know, see, I was just gonna take my block
kick from me, I was like, And then they moved
him back five yards. I'm like, and the ball just
literally went whoop whoop. It went straight to the ground.
Didn't even make it to the endzo. So you know
that that was a fun time. But I mean, the
drainage system here, like the grounds crew has done a

(28:09):
tremendous jot. I know, I just like bashed them about
the stadium for that one, But that was one where
you were in an impossible situation for the situation because
you had Whippios was already done, so the field was
chewed up, and if you continue to play on that
and you would have put that rain out there, it
just would have been a straight like nineteen sixties, like
old school rights of autumn type of game.

Speaker 5 (28:29):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (28:30):
I was doing the whip games that weekend. Yeah, exactly.
You saw that field go get more and more churned up, and.

Speaker 4 (28:36):
They can, especially from the twenties to the twenties. Yeah, right,
it was just brown like there was like patches of
green somewhere, and so they had to rest it. But
unfortunately you had a storm come through. But this field
drains really well, so there won't I don't think there'll
be too many limitations for what they're gonna do this afternoon. Yeah,
it might be a little sloshy on like the sideline area,

(28:57):
but the main field, the way that they crowned, the
way they've done the drainage here over the last couple
of years, it's excellent. I mean, you can't really tell.
It's just maybe a little slick with the blades of
grass right retaining water. But the guys will be able
to do what they have. I mean, their cleats now
are so well designed and so sturdy that you're not
going to get those big issues. And they don't have
pads on right, so it's already a half to three

(29:18):
quarter speed tempo, so I don't see any limitation. The
worst case scenario when they had this, they would move
to the turf field, right, So that's the only other option.
But I think they're going to come out because Mike
Tomlin once again wants to create those stressful environments yep,
you know, and be able to control those stressful environments
up here at training camp.

Speaker 3 (29:36):
This is one of the ways you do.

Speaker 4 (29:37):
As long as there's no lightning, they're going to be
out there for practice.

Speaker 2 (29:39):
One of the guys that I would be interested to
watch today, although I will not be here on the
wet field is and I'll be back here next week
to watch all the practices is Caleb Johnson. And Mike
Tomlin was asked about him after practice yesterday and you know,
really gave him a thumbs up and said he he
showed up in great shape.

Speaker 3 (30:00):
Yeah, and that's what you love to hear about it.

Speaker 2 (30:02):
We were talking about that yesterday, how the rookies come
out here and they're like, you know, they're like the
rabbits in the in the Greyhound race, right, They're out
there running who here we go, and then you know,
by the by the last turn, they're slowing down and
the and the big guys are moving out ahead of them.

Speaker 3 (30:18):
You know. So uh but but high praise for Caleb Johnson.

Speaker 5 (30:22):
You know.

Speaker 2 (30:23):
I think it was Tim Benz who asked, does he
have a high floor? And Mike Tomlin agreed, he seems
to have, you know, one of those guys who I
think the expectation is, at the very least, he's gonna
be a nice football player for you, and of course
you're hoping for more. But he's an interesting guy. I'm
sure a lot of people are gonna be looking forward
to watching him. But I thought that was you know,
sometimes saying Mike tom won't get praise for praises, dude.

(30:44):
Sometimes he can be a little stingy with that when
it comes to rookies, you know, just to make sure
everybody's staying in line, set the expectation properly, that's right.

Speaker 3 (30:51):
But but for him to say that, that really that
caught my attention. Max.

Speaker 4 (30:55):
Well, I think and I think that's one of the
things when we look at it, you're looking for those
little gleams of progress of hope because there's only so
much you can judge absolutely from from spidershells running three
quarter speed. Guys can't tackle, can't bump, can't thud, and
you're like, well, what are you seeing? And you know,
Mike tom has been through this, I mean nineteen times,

(31:16):
so I think he I think he has a pretty
good beat on how to assess human performance and how
to get the best out of guys. So when you
hear him say that early, that perks up the ears, right,
the old radar starts to go up and starts to churn,
I think, and I think that is that is high.
The highest praise you can get is that, Yeah, he
came in in phenomenal shape and he's looking like he
can be a guy that can get tribut before right,

(31:37):
put a hand in the pile type of guy. And then,
like I said, we'll see that first day of pads
right over there. You see you see the the right
end zone going towards the baseball field and the player fields.
There's white lines drawn over there. It's the faux offensive
line drill in that in that left corner. Okay, that's
where linebackers versus running back is going to be. Oh yeah, yeah,
it's going to be right in that corner. And guess

(31:59):
who's going to be over there orchestrating day one. Oh yeah,
Mike Tomlin's gonna be curating the matchups that he wants
to see. So guess what, Caleb Johnson, You're gonna get
the Jalen Warren treatment. We're gonna put you against Patrick Queen.
We're gonna put you against Alex high Smith. We're gonna
put you against t J. Watt because he started with
Jack Sawyer, another rookie. He would be the first one TJ.

(32:20):
But high Smith yeah, yeah, yeah, TJ. TJ is like
is like the Krim Dela Krim. So if you could
go block high Smith that you can handle Patrick Queen
in those situations, then you get the honor of doing
battle with t J. Watt right and getting embarrassed by
by a future Hall of Famer.

Speaker 2 (32:35):
You know, I am really interested to see Jalen Warren
this year as well. Never really felt like last year
with the early injury and then he got dinged up
again during the season. Never really felt like we got
to see the best of Jalen Warren last year. That's
one we saw spurs Spurts. Yeah, yeah, that's exactly right, Spurts,
but not not to the level we've seen in the past.
I think he's a terrific football player. And you know,

(32:58):
you added Kenneth Gainwell, and listen, there's gonna be some
interesting battles with some of the running backs. Again we
talk about you know, we just talked about the depth
the linebacker position, the inside linebacker position.

Speaker 3 (33:09):
You know, you got Tray Sermon. You have other guys
in there.

Speaker 4 (33:11):
Srmons.

Speaker 3 (33:12):
Another one that I'm really excited.

Speaker 2 (33:14):
Evan Hall is another guy that he was a former
draft pick. They've got some interesting guys that are going
to be battling for spots. But you know, Game Weell
came in and you know, game Well is here to
play and so you know, I mean he won.

Speaker 4 (33:28):
A Super Bowl last that's right, goodness sake.

Speaker 2 (33:30):
So the guy, the guy has has been at a
high level and to and to mix and match those
guys in there once again. We talked about, you know
the depth of defensive line and now the depth of cornerback.
You know, you had to you know, we talked about
the starting guys in you know, three all pro types.
Joey Porter Junior hasn't gotten there yet, but is that
type of guy and hopefully ascending to that sort of thing.

(33:52):
And then you have you know, like a Corey Trice
behind him, a Beanie Bishop who led the team in interceptions.

Speaker 3 (33:57):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (33:58):
So you know your depth has improved there. Well, the
depth of the running back position is admirable, you know,
and so it'll be you know, if if Caleb Johnson
can be the kind of guy you think he is,
and now you have Jalen Warren coming in with that
one two punch wow, and then you know, the Steelers
expressed a desire to get more explosive and Caleb Johnson.

(34:21):
That's why I was looking at, you know, going into
the draft. Would they take Traveon Henderson, Would they take
bay shall Touton another guy who I think is I
think he's with Caroline Also, we're going to see some
of these speed guys later. But they went with Caleb Johnson.
Remember talking to Dale Lolly and Dale said, hey, listen, man,
his top end speed game speed was a lot better

(34:41):
than you. You know, then those forty times might indicate
this guy can move. Yeah and so and then you
get a lot of load there in Iowa offense and
you get DK Metcalf. You know, they're they're trying to
get more explosive. But just talking about Caleb Johnson and
a healthy Jalen Warren, that should help the Steelers get
bigger plays from the running game. It's look, I love

(35:04):
Naji Harris. I was a Naje hair supporter, but it's
it's four yards, it's six yards, it's three yards, it's
you know, and that's great. And he was reliable and
he didn't fumble. Uh we talked about the Eagles game yesterday,
but he basically didn't fumble and he and he answered
the call. He was available, right, and he would say that,
you know, one of the best abilities, it's certainly not
the best ability. One of the best abilities is availability.

(35:27):
By the way, when people say the best avail the
best ability is availability, No, it isn't. The best ability
is ability. I'm available, But Mike tom Win's not calling
up to the press box for me to run down
there and.

Speaker 3 (35:38):
Play for the Steelers. I am available here, I am coach.
I'm healthy right here.

Speaker 2 (35:43):
So, uh, you know, to have so I liked I
really liked Nag's game. But I think that to be
able to pick up some more, you know, chunk plays
some more explosives and listen to Steelers were pretty good
at explosives in the running game and not you was
last year. But I'm talking about somebody that can take
one fifty yards sixty yards. I know you used to

(36:05):
work for the red Zone. You know you're watching the
red zone offviously, Hey, let's take you to somewhere where
this guy's gonna rip off a sixty yard run.

Speaker 3 (36:11):
Najie's longest run of his career was thirty nine yards.

Speaker 4 (36:15):
And that's the difference. And you want it's called the
home run ball, right right, That's right. You need the
home run ball, and you need that guy that those chunks,
like that four yard chunk, you'd like it to be
an eight yard chunk. That six yard chunk you want
to be a twelve yard that's right. And then if
you get an eight yard, I need to be fifteen, right,
And especially if we're gonna take the first two levels,
you got to make the third guy miss, and for

(36:36):
whatever reason, Naje would always find that freeman and that
freeman would take him down right, and so you need
a little wiggle at that point to be able to
break that. And then that makes for the twenty yard
explosive place. Because we always talk about this. When I
was playing, especially with Bruce arians as our offensive coordinator,
He's like, I need fifteen explosives. A game was a

(36:57):
fifteen what are those explosives? Plus yard reception and also
a twelve.

Speaker 3 (37:03):
Or more yard run twelve. He zipped it up from ten. Yeah,
he took it up twelve.

Speaker 4 (37:07):
Ruth need to twelve. Like if you got ten and
e twelve, you know, so you wanted to get to
that fifteen number. And then you also wanted to control
the line of scrimmage. So I mean, if you wanted
to win the time of possession battle, whether it was
thirty minutes in one second or whether it's thirty five
to forty minutes, you have to win that battle. So
that's where the explosive plays come in to help tilting
it into your balance because now you can run more

(37:29):
because you're usually playing from an advantageous position controlling the
clock and keeping the other team on the bench.

Speaker 3 (37:35):
YEP. So we're gonna discuss that we've got to take
a break.

Speaker 2 (37:39):
The balance I think is is really intriguing about how
you accomplished that We're gonna get Max's opinion on that.
Coming up next in the locker room is King of Starks,
presented by your neighborhood of Fords Tour On this year,
there's audio.

Speaker 5 (37:51):
Network, iHeartRadio's Life, I have coverage, I'm not.

Speaker 1 (38:01):
Twenty twenty five Steelers Training Camp is presented by FedEx
where Now meets Next and also brought to you by
bud Light, Independence Health System, by Pennsylvania One Call System,
by Live Casino, Calciente Pizza and Drafthouse by Tom's Appliances,
South Hills Auto, Laurel, Highlands Visitors Bureau, Wemax Select Realty,

(38:24):
the Pittsburgh Steelers Pro Shop and by us steel.

Speaker 3 (38:31):
Well.

Speaker 2 (38:31):
Welcome back to Latrove and we do see players coming
out into the field. Looks like they're working their way
over toward the artificial turf field, as Max Starks indicated
they might. You are in the locker room with King
and Starks presented by your neighborhood, Forge door and the
Steelers Audio Network.

Speaker 3 (38:46):
Just getting going here in camp.

Speaker 2 (38:48):
It's day three, day three, Yeah, it's Saturday, right, yea Thursday,
Friday three.

Speaker 6 (38:53):
I guess technically day four, but yeah, because of the
report on Wednesday.

Speaker 2 (38:56):
But the practice here, the players are walking down. If
you've ever been to La Trobe, and by the way,
if you haven't, it's a it's a fabulous experience. And
we see as I come here in the morning, get
here about nine thirty or so, there's already fans lined
up in their cars getting ready for the afternoon practice.

Speaker 6 (39:16):
You should have seen it last year when the you
were you were the last year when the practices were
it was it ten.

Speaker 3 (39:21):
Thirty or other in the morning.

Speaker 6 (39:22):
Yeah, right, that line out there by six am was
hundreds of cars, right, So it wasn't as bad today
with it being back at two, but still there were
dozens of cars in line yeah, four ten am.

Speaker 2 (39:32):
So so it's a it's a first of all, it's
a beautiful setting. You see the campus and the spires
and the you know, the dorms and everything, and then
they've got the Saint Vincent's in the Saint Vincent in
the bushes in the far northfield, So where if you're
sitting in the stands, you're you're looking at three football
fields directly in front of you. You know, you're looking

(39:54):
across the short field. You're not looking you know, one
hundred and twenty yards with two end zones. You're looking
across the fifty three and a half yards from one
field and then a little bit of a space and
then the next field, a little bit of a space
in the next field. And so you sit in the
stands and you're you're out looking over that, and then
to the left, you know, the campus, part of the

(40:17):
campus is behind you, very beautiful part of the campus
behind you. Then to the left there's a walkway and
fans line that walkway and there they show up for autographs.
So the players come out of the dorms and the
eating areas and the meeting.

Speaker 3 (40:29):
Areas and walk down this walkway.

Speaker 2 (40:32):
It's downhill, uh slightly, it's a paved walkway, and they
come out and they take the field and it really
is one of the cool parts of Latrobe's At the play,
the fans line up. Now they're not here yet. This
is just players walking down. Yeah, they're walking across the
far end of the second field, heading to an astro

(40:52):
turf field which does run length wise to our right.
It's the fourth field here. There's a softball field of
by the way, tuck behind some tents to your right
hand side. So the players are coming out and they're
moving over to the artificial turf field to allow the
drainage and the fields to dry up. The skies are
beginning too. Yeah, we're lurching towards Sunning this year. In

(41:15):
fact that we're almost there. Really it's kind of blown through,
but it's such a beautiful setting. You have the hills
in the background. It's just a gorgeous place.

Speaker 3 (41:23):
Matt Williams and I talked about this.

Speaker 6 (41:25):
I can't remember it was yesterday or Thursday, but the
life form that this campus takes during training camp is awesome.
You get up in the morning and you walk to
the cafeteria for breakfast and coffee, and it's quiet, it's cool,
the sun's coming up over the mountains. You can see
the mist and the haze and the humidity. In the background,
the church bells are going off at the monastery. The

(41:46):
grounds crew is out here doing all the different grounds
crew things, right it's real quiet in the morning, but
then around noon it starts to get wild because they
let the fans in. And then from two to five
it's utter chaos because practice and autographs and everything going on.
And you walk to dinner and by the time you
get out of dinner, it's quiet again. And it's and
it's and the sun's going down over the mountains, and

(42:06):
the and the grounds crew is back out there and
and you know, some of the scouts and the tailors
and everybody in the world are sitting up on the
hill having cigars. It's it's very cool to see it
start quiet, yeah, get crazy, and you know, to wake
up and go back to bed. Every single day. It's
very like I love like I I kind of dork
out about that. And I love college campuses. I love

(42:28):
the college atmosphere. This is a beautiful, small one. It's
just really cool to life form that this campus takes
on each.

Speaker 2 (42:34):
Day, for sure, And I love every once a couple
of times last year, I'm sure a couple of times
this year. You just kind of take my walk around
the campus and uh and check it out and see
what's going on. And uh, you know, I'm not very
good at sitting still. So if I have forty five minutes,
I'm okay, I'm out. I'm not gonna get my headphones
on and I'm gone. I'm just sitting the dorm room.

Speaker 3 (42:52):
That's relaxing. Yeah, that's relaxing to me. That's not gonna
be my thing. So, uh, I did want to ask you,
Uh you had you came up with this tistic.

Speaker 2 (43:00):
We talked about how Nije Harrison is four years never
had a forty yard run, So what was your stat Wes?

Speaker 3 (43:05):
So here you go.

Speaker 6 (43:06):
Last year, in just the playoffs, Saquon Barkley had four
runs of forty yards or more.

Speaker 3 (43:11):
On the season.

Speaker 6 (43:12):
As a whole, Saquon Barkley had runs of thirty four,
thirty eight, thirty nine, forty one, fifty five, fifty nine, sixty,
sixty two, sixty five, sixty eight, seventy, seventy two, and
seventy eight yards.

Speaker 3 (43:24):
Eight of those resulted in touchdowns, and four runs of
more than forty yards just in the playoffs, just in
the playoffs.

Speaker 6 (43:32):
So that's the kind of explosives sixty yard touchdown runs
in that game against the Rams, right, And.

Speaker 3 (43:37):
So again, when we talk about trying to find the balance. Max.
You know, my question for you is going to be this, right,
So you want.

Speaker 2 (43:43):
Explosive plays, but let's face it, especially in today's NFL.
You know, you you played on teams in which if
the Steelers got the lead, the other team was in big, big,
big trouble because you could do two things. You could
run the football with Jerome and out the clock. You
talked about that yesterday, running eleven straight the same play

(44:04):
eleven straight times. But you also had you know, James
Harrison and Joey Porter Jr. In like, here we come, man,
You've got to throw. Now you are in big trouble.
This is what we do best. We have now dictated
what you're going.

Speaker 3 (44:16):
To have to do.

Speaker 2 (44:17):
I think it's harder and harder to do that in
the NFL. Now it's hard to hold teams to low scores.
I used to talk about this all the time. You know,
the Steelers would blow a team out thirteen to three, right,
it was like never a game. I mean it might
as well be forty one to seven. You were never
in it, you know, thirteen to three you never had
a chance. It's harder and harder to do that, and
so you're trying to get explosives. But let's face it,

(44:40):
Max in today's NFL, and it's probably been true for
longer than today's NFL, the defense that defends least defends best.
The less time you are out on the field, the
better your defense is apt to perform. Now, of course,
your defense has something to say about that. But offensively,
you need to be able to go hand in glove
with your defense. You need to be able to go

(45:01):
on long sustained drives if you want, but that's a
hard way to make make hay.

Speaker 3 (45:05):
You also have to have some explosive play.

Speaker 2 (45:07):
So it'll be interesting to see how those things, you know,
sort of correlate this season.

Speaker 3 (45:11):
For the Steelers.

Speaker 4 (45:12):
Yeah, I think the biggest thing, and we talk about this,
you know, the quarterback has been the driving force of
offensive performance, and we've seen the rules kind of change
to create more of those opportunities kind of you know,
for all intensive purpose handcuff the defense to a lot
of that's right, exactly what. You can't carry the tight
end off the ball after five yards, right, you can't

(45:35):
redirect at the point for a receiver. You know, your
jam zone is a lot tighter. You know, we see
so many more holding calls and those those five yard penalties. Right,
this automatic push up, first down, trying to create more
offensive opportunities. So the best way to do that is
keep your defense from that exposure. And that's what the

(45:56):
biggest thing is. I think defenses now are more apt
to say, you know what, yes, we need that, right,
And I think that's how I look at it, is
that you have to be able to sustain those drives.

Speaker 1 (46:06):
You.

Speaker 4 (46:06):
Yes, we want the Saquon Barkley plays, but there is
merit to what a Najie Harris brings to the table
because it's all about control and if you can control that,
that's where you're at your best place. So it's gonna
be really interesting to see because you want you need
some of that because you've got to be able to
jump and take the lead and be able to move forward.
But you also need to be able to just sustain

(46:27):
drives and give your defense a blow if they've been
on a long drive.

Speaker 3 (46:30):
Right.

Speaker 4 (46:31):
And then like you said, if you if you go
ahead and now teams force that the pass the ball,
it's like, okay, well now we need to go ahead
and kick it up again. We need an explosive play.
We need that forty yard run to flip the field
right to get to midfield, and now we can dictate
how it is and if we are gonna punt, we're
pinning you deep and forcing you to go the long
way back to get a score.

Speaker 3 (46:51):
In all good stuff and that stuff.

Speaker 2 (46:55):
That good stuff is going to continue in the next
hour when Wes uil Er, who you've heard jumping in here,
is going to take over, aren't you West?

Speaker 6 (47:01):
I sure, am well, I mean I don't know about takeover.

Speaker 3 (47:04):
Yeah, yeah, see that was kind of a test. That
was like, I thought it's kind of an aggressive.

Speaker 4 (47:09):
Yeah, I thought it was a little a little aggressive.
He's like, hey, not take over, slide right in, slide in,
Yeah exactly, Hey we need the reliever. Yeah, give me Van.

Speaker 6 (47:19):
Like when Messi scores a big goal and he goes
to the quarter and he slides for ten yards on
his That's just how I'm sliding.

Speaker 2 (47:25):
Is okay, Wes is going to slide in here next.
I hope that folks will will check it out. I'm
really I'm really stoked to be part of this Hall
of Honor reveal class coming up in an hour and
three minutes that will be here on SNR.
