Speaker 2 (00:30):
And thank you very much for being with us on
this Friday, getting ready for the home opener as the
Steers one to oh taking on a Seattle team that
liked The Steerers were ten and seven last year, but
unlike to see if there's are zero to one heading
into this game and Max fired up, ready to roll.
Hope you're doing well and I know you're ready for

(00:51):
some football on Sunday.

Speaker 3 (00:54):
I am ready for some football Sunday Tomorrow. I got
backyard brawl, So I am getting a double dip once
again of Pittsburgh City football.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
Now, is that in Morgantown? At Akersher?

Speaker 4 (01:10):
That is in Morgantown, my friend?

Speaker 2 (01:12):
Okay, Oh that's good?

Speaker 4 (01:13):
Yeah, great?

Speaker 2 (01:14):
What time is the game?

Speaker 3 (01:16):
I believe three thirty three thirty eastern kick for that one.
Mark Jones and Roddy White are the color and play
by play for TV I will be on my first
radio broadcast of the season for ESPN Radio, calling that
one my my buddy Mike Cousins. So I'm really looking

(01:38):
forward to that one. That's gonna be a fun one tomorrow.
And uh, and then you know season opener a for sure,
Steelers and Seahawks on Sunday, of course we have a
one o'clock kick.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
Yeah, and can't wait. Nothing like the home opener. I mean,
they're just isn't It's gonna be exciting, and you know,
I think. So let let everybody know, first of all,
Missy Matthews will be joining us today Paul Moyer, former
Seattle Seahawks player, coach and now an analyst in the
radio broadcast. He's going to be joining us in the

(02:16):
second hour to talk a little bit about the Seattle team.
But uh, let's get to our Steelers injury report. It's
presented by UPMC, the official healthcare provider and health plan
of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and this might set up everything
keys to the game, what we're thinking about, how we
feel about this game. So let's go first through the

(02:37):
Steelers and then we're gonna go through Seattle. So for
the Steelers, no Joey Porter did not participate. The feeling
was that there seemed to be a sense of optimism
when Mike Tomlin addressed the media just a couple of
days ago, we will see if Joey is out there
and even a limited participant or not because he did

(02:59):
not participate. So Cam Heyward, you know, no no worries
he's arresting Vet, right, No no worries that he did
not participate. And we expected no Deshaun Elliott, no Derek Harmon,
you know, maybe Harmon in a week, maybe Deshaun Elliott
in Minnesota, uh in in Ireland against Minnesota. Calvin Anderson

(03:22):
was back of practice. And then the good news Nick Herbig,
who was a limited participant on Wednesday, a full participant
on Thursday. So you knew about Elliott, we knew about Harmon.
You know, it just seems like the big injury news
is Joey Porter did not practice and Nick Herbig did

(03:44):
so the thought, I think the general prevailing feeling was
that would move Jalen Ramsey to the outside and you know,
if Joey Porter couldn't go, and presumably put Eccles starting
in the slot, and then of course other guys rotate
in Pierre and other guys. Your thoughts on if we
go down that road and again, we'll no more later today,

(04:05):
but we'll be off the air by then. Your thoughts
Max on what that would mean to the Steelers defense,
because clearly you want to have them all right, But yeah,
but Jayalen going to the outside where he's obviously very good,
But then that leaves you know, Cooper Cup in the slot.
That leaves you know, JSN, Jackson Smith and Jigba frequently
works out of the slot. So your thoughts on the

(04:27):
impact that could have on the Steelers.

Speaker 3 (04:30):
It's never ideal, but I mean, you know, I know
we would want to have Jalen. You know, Jalen would
be the conscious choice to put out there, but I
mean we also have, like you said, we also have other.

Speaker 4 (04:42):
Options, right.

Speaker 3 (04:43):
I mean Brandon Eckles who stepped in and played on
Sunday when Joey Porter went down. You can utilize him
to get Jalen those type of matchups at certain points.
The one thing that I do love about the secondary
is is it's versatile and what is does not have

(05:06):
to be if that makes sense, it does just signed Jabril.
Now obviously I'm not saying, oh my god, you got
to start this due immediately, but maybe you have a
rotation in there at that nickel and slot position. Jabrill
Preppers comes in, gives you ten to fifteen snaps right
fresh off the street, fresh into the season, and you

(05:27):
still have you know, maybe after today you activate a
Beanie Bishop. I mean, the guy led the team in
interceptions a year ago, and that's not a bad guy
to have as an option if you're gonna need nickel help,
so you know, and then of course you still have James,
you know, Pierre. So I mean, I don't feel panic,
I don't feel worry because of the depth. The one

(05:51):
thing we talked about coming out of training camp what
made this team so good depth? And you know, it's
always it's always a position group that's going to have
a run of these issues. And we saw it two
in one game. Happened to Sean. Then Joey Boom not

(06:12):
available this week. But because we rely so heavily on
the depth and the quality of those guys, you can
put a Chucks, you can put a Chuck Clark out
there and not get you know, and and not feel
like you have a significant drop off you know, you
can shift Jail to the outside of bring Brandon echeles in.

(06:33):
That's the beauty of this. We have guys to cover
up for our guys. So yeah, it's not ideal. You
don't like it. But if you can get a nick
herbig back in the process and bolster some of that
pass rush, the pass rush takes pressure off the secondary.
So it's you know, six and one hand, half a
dozen in the other. But you know, I hope that

(06:56):
those guys have a full recovery when they come back,
because them in the lineup is a huge difference maker
them outside the lineup.

Speaker 4 (07:08):
It's like, we can make it, but it's not the
ideal situation.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
Yeah, and I to me, you know, if this was Cincinnati,
and this is no disrespect to either any of the
guys you mentioned playing for the Steelers or receiving for Seattle,
but you know, Cincinnati is kind of the reason you
want those premier corners at every position. I'm not sure
Seattle stresses you as much as Cincinnati would. Again, not

(07:35):
taking anything away from Seattle and not trying to take
anything away from the guys who are going to step
in for the Steelers, because as you mentioned, these are
guys with some pedigree of success. But there is a
reason that you brought in Sleigh, that you brought in Ramsey,
and that you spent a high second round pick on JPJ.
And that's because you want them out there now. On

(07:56):
the other side, so I agree with you, I think
that this is hopefully this is one that they can
cover with the with the personnel that they have. Seattle
on the other hand, now Seattle, you know they they have.
I think if you look at Seattle, they have the
capability of being where the Steelers, where the Steelers were

(08:18):
a top ten defense last year. Seattle's trying to kind
of break into that and feel like they can do that.
And there's some reasons they do. Their their past rush.
They have a lot of varied guys that can get
to the quarterback. That really remains unchanged on the injury report,
with the exception of Jaron Reid, you know who's a
defensive tackle who can push the pocket some He did

(08:40):
not participate in practice yesterday. Back limited yesterday. We'll see
what happens with him today. Backs are tricky. Some treatment
you could be you could be ready to go, they
could be monitoring it. We don't know for sure, or
it could just be, hey, man, I got a bad back,
I can't go. You just get backs are weird. You
never know. However, here's what we do know. In the secondary,

(09:02):
So the past rush, I think most people would say
that's their number two strength. Their number one strength is
their secondary where they have some Pro Bowl players. And
they spent a second round pick on nick Emmon Warry,
who we talked about yesterday, who we both feel could
have easily been a first round draft choice. He was
taken in the second round. He is out high ankle spring.

(09:26):
That's not news. We knew that. Here's what is news.
Julian Love, starting safety, did not participate in practice yesterday.
That is, if you are Seattle, that's not good news.
He has a groin issue. And then you have Devin Witherspoon,

(09:51):
two time Pro Bowl and by the way, two years
in the league. You know, he was taking fifth overall.
He has a knee and did not participate. So it
is possible possible that if you're looking at the top
six defensive backs for Seattle, three of them won't play.

(10:11):
And you know, look, Rik Wolan is a is a
Pro Bowl guy. But you're you're talking about really high
pedigree guys that you know, this Seattle team is counting
on to be big players for them, who may or
you know, at this stage of the game, they may
not be available. We know one of them won't be.

(10:32):
But Witherspoon and uh, you know, popping up on the
list and Love heading in the wrong direction, you know
that's you know, that was a that was a real
surprise yesterday. And by the way, you know loves a
guy who went to a Pro Bowl in his first
year in Seattle two years ago. So just to underscore
the importance potentially of these injuries for Seattle, you know

(10:56):
that this could potentially be a calam it's for them.

Speaker 4 (11:02):
It could be.

Speaker 3 (11:03):
I mean, listen, we just talked about our own secondary
issues and these I would rather be our secondary than
the Seattle se secondary right now, right And I think
that's it can always be. You know, you hate, you
hate the cliches of everything. It could always be worse.
But literally, look at this, it can always be worse
than what it is. So I think when you look

(11:25):
at it across that board, they have a dynamic pass rush.
They do it from a four man style, and that's
gonna be a challenge of our offense to stop that
pass rush.

Speaker 4 (11:37):
And so I.

Speaker 3 (11:38):
Feel like the same things that kind of kind of
make us, you know, unique on the defensive side of
the same characteristics that are growing there to make to
make them unique on their side as well. Their team
that should be front seven, sound and dependent and heavy,

(11:58):
So that that that's gonna be a challenge, and I
think that group can go and especially when they know
that the back half is struggling like that, that's gonna
put more pressure on the pass rush to be successful.

Speaker 4 (12:10):
Hit home.

Speaker 3 (12:12):
You know, I need to be able to get and
they need to be able to get home on four
man rushes and allow for the drop in the zone
coverage because you don't have your lockdown guys. You know,
Julian Love is a very very physical safety type and
he's really good at what he does. So is Devin Witherspoon.
So those are two big pieces missing from that defense.

(12:36):
And then you throw in the Nick even Warry injury
as well, because him and Julian Love were the ones
that were rotating at that position. Now both those guys
are so you have no true safeties right now in
your roster or strong safeties, I should say, you know,
the strong safeties are both both your guys are out,
so you have to use the practice squad how to supplement.

(12:58):
Shuffle some guys around, see what you know, see what
Pritchett can do if you're trying to look and find
somebody that can do something else, because I don't know,
you know how how good Kobe Bryant would be moving
over or Taya Katta.

Speaker 4 (13:19):
Sorry Tyakuda, and.

Speaker 3 (13:23):
You know Darien Kendrick is gonna be your nickel because
Devin Witherspoon's out, So you're really stressed. I mean, having
three guys out in a secondary that's that that's pretty
big to not have those guys available. I mean, like
you said, I mean Reek Willing or Trek willan is
is an excellent corner. He's he's gonna be tested on

(13:47):
game day. And then Josh job will be stepping in
to start at the opposite corner. And I don't I
don't know much about Josh Job so, but I do
know that Front four or Front seven they're gonna they're
gonna have They're gonna have a big job to do
come come Sunday.

Speaker 2 (14:04):
Yeah, and by the way, uh Reek Woland. I guess
he likes to go his names to Reek, but he
likes to go by Reek, so we'll call him Reek
if that's what he wants to go by.

Speaker 4 (14:13):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (14:14):
He was a pro bowler in twenty two but he
when he had six interceptions and led the league. So
he is expected to play. And again we'll see what
the injury update is today for those guys, because you know, well,
I don't know, you want your guys to be healthy
if you're Seattle, but that that is a big, big
challenge for them if they're not healthy. Once again, the

(14:34):
Steelers Injury Report presented by UPMC, the official healthcare provider
and health plan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and uh so Max,
that's you know when when you think about, uh, some
of the marquee matchups in this game and that secondary
you know, potentially Devin with Witherspoon, you know, matched up

(14:54):
with DK Metcalf in his return, well he's not returning,
but his team, uh, his his first match against the
team of course that he spent in his entire career with,
and that is uh, you know, the Seattle Seahawks. Regardless,
I have to think that for this game, the home
opener for DK Metcalf in black and Gold and going

(15:17):
against his former team has got to be exciting.

Speaker 3 (15:23):
Exciting, Uh, nervous, anxious, pissed off, All those emotions I
think would have to be going through his head, going
through his mind, and you know, let's let's just call

(15:45):
it what it is. I think, I think I'm gonna
be I'm gonna be a little extra. There's gonna be
a little little something, you know, in the tank. Yeah,
a little fuel injector clay, you know what I'm saying
in the gas tank to go along with throw a
little nast tank in the car a little fast and

(16:06):
furious style, like I am expecting DK Metcalf.

Speaker 4 (16:13):
To want to and and and this is just me
and listen, I could be completely.

Speaker 3 (16:20):
Off if I was playing my old team that traded me.

Speaker 4 (16:28):
Over here, and I enjoy it over here.

Speaker 3 (16:32):
I'm thankful that you traded me because you know you're
not a playoff team that this, this feels and looks
like the start.

Speaker 4 (16:42):
Is something special with the playoff team.

Speaker 3 (16:46):
Thank you for upgrading me. But I'm about to show
you what you're missing. I'm about to give.

Speaker 4 (16:53):
You the the the the question of whether to or
whether or not to.

Speaker 3 (17:02):
I'm gonna show you why you made a bad decision,
and I'm gonna enjoy every second of it. I would
you know, I too went to the Aaron Rodgers school
of petty and we are we are going, we are
going to get real, real extra on you.

Speaker 4 (17:18):
I held back when we were.

Speaker 3 (17:20):
Teammates, but now we're not teammates and I ain't got
to protect you.

Speaker 4 (17:24):
Now it's time to destroy you.

Speaker 3 (17:26):
Like that's that's the mentality that I'm I'm fully expecting DK.
And you have Aaron Rodgers as your quarterback. Guess who
else is super petty? A a Ron is that guy?
And I love it and I'm here for it, and

(17:48):
we get we get a nice catbird seat view of
it all to take place.

Speaker 4 (17:54):
Recorder and arbiter here reporting for duty. Cannot wait.

Speaker 3 (17:58):
Gotta find popcorn, you know what I'm saying? Like that,
Like this is this is appointment watching television right here.
First two weeks. So nah, I'm excited, And I mean,
I don't think there's anything really to be said.

Speaker 4 (18:12):
It is going to be.

Speaker 3 (18:16):
A show for DK and they and they are going
to do everything in their powers to make sure DK
does not go off on them. But DK is going
to go off on them regardless of whatever they do.
That's what's gonna make it even more uh like just crazy.
Is He's going to do it from a tight, double covered,

(18:38):
bracketed style play. And the only man that could get
him the ball and those and those narrow, tight windows
is mister one number eight, Aaron Rodgers is that guy.
He's the guy to throw to thread the keyhole on
a throw, you know what I'm saying, Like, he's he's won.

(19:00):
He's gonna put it in a place where only only
DK can go get it, you know, boldly, go where
no other receiver has gone before, right, you know, the
star Trek re receiver. He's God, he's gonna He's gonna
put him in a position to be successful and catch
and run like he did in the earlier game against

(19:20):
the Jets last week, where it was only a couple
of easy throws.

Speaker 4 (19:25):
But DK makes the easy look phenomenal. So I'm just
I can't wait.

Speaker 3 (19:31):
I mean, that is truly a story for this weekend,
the matchup, and something to monitor and track throughout the
course of the game.

Speaker 4 (19:39):
It is.

Speaker 2 (19:40):
It's a it's a wonderful you know sort of storyline
out look the Jets and Steve is opening up last
week with Aaron Rodgers and Justin Fields, you know, swapping
teams and DK Metcalf this week. Fun stuff, man, We
have some really interesting and fun sideline stories. We have

(20:01):
the home opener coming up. Also coming up, we have
some special guests. We have Missy Matthews is gonna be
with us.

Speaker 4 (20:09):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (20:09):
Missy of course appears with this every Friday, so that's
gonna be great. And then Paul Moyer from the Seattle Seahawks.
I keep wanting to say Max Seattle SuperSonics, and I
don't know why I have banished that thought.

Speaker 3 (20:24):
John Kemp is not coming back, Sattle Seahawks, Seattle.

Speaker 2 (20:30):
See. I had to stop down yesterday we're taping at
the show. I had to stop down because I was
about to say that about I gotta get that out
of my head.

Speaker 3 (20:37):
I don't know why the Seattle Hey, Seattle football team
treating them like Washington.

Speaker 1 (20:41):
I mean, I'm a.

Speaker 4 (20:43):
Team.

Speaker 2 (20:43):
Yeah, I haven't watched an NBA game in years.

Speaker 3 (20:46):
I can't believe that the SuperSonics have not been there
for a very long time.

Speaker 4 (20:51):
Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 2 (20:53):
Anyway, we have Paul Moyer from this Seattle Seahawks coming
up next hour as well, and plenty more now is
from Max, including the Keys to the game when we
continue inside the Locker Room with King and Starks, presented
by your neighborhood Ford Store.

Com and welcome back inside the locker room and again
the Steelers taking on the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday at
one o'clock to home opener. It is time for our
Keys to the Game, presented by your neighborhood Fords Store.
The F one fifty is the official truck of the
Pittsburgh Steelers. Actually, Max, before I get to the Keys

(21:54):
of the Game, I wanted to ask you. I have
to admit I did not see a whole lot of
I caught a good portion of the third quarter. In
the fourth quarter. Last night, I was going to come home.
I was out with my wife and I was gonna
come home and watch the game from the beginning, But
when I looked to the score and turned on the TV,

(22:15):
I'm like, no need, man, green Bay is just working Washington, who,
by the way, was tied for Cincinnati, and actually they
had the longest regular season winning streak in the NFL.
I believe Cincinnati. I saw Dan Horde, their play by
play guy, tweeted that out they have the longest active

(22:36):
regular season winning streak in the NFL. What the washing
of the Cincinnati Bengals. That distinction had belonged to the Commanders.
But that was I don't know how much you saw,
if any, but that was just a dominating effort by
Green Bay over Washington.

Speaker 3 (22:54):
This is not the Green Bay of old. This is
a completely different Green Bay than the one that Jordan
Love took over from from Aaron Rodgers just just a
few short years ago. This squad, that defense man rob
That's gonna be a challenge on Sunday Night Football and

(23:15):
a for.

Speaker 4 (23:15):
Sure that Packers game. What Michael Parsons has meant for
that team. That signing and.

Speaker 3 (23:25):
Haters cowboy fans, I think you know they're taking me
like the ultimate haters of all time. If you're wondering
why Green Bay paid what they did for Michael Parsons,
it's already paying dividends right now. I mean, it's honestly

(23:46):
like buying a stock that a buddy was like, hey man,
you should really get in this.

Speaker 4 (23:50):
I think this is gonna be the next big thing,
and the very next.

Speaker 3 (23:53):
Day it like goes on a run, like you know,
like you bought the stock at two point fifty and
now the stock's like at twelve dollars, Like that's a
humongous exponential jump. Like they are exponentially better in these
first two weeks. And think about who they knocked off
already these first two weeks, Destois.

Speaker 4 (24:14):
And Washington.

Speaker 3 (24:16):
Yeah, I was trying to be really fancy with that
one that did not work. Detroine was a really good
one that had a very frenchy feel to it. But
to knock off two playoff teams, two really good offenses
to neutralize them and back to back weeks, the power

(24:37):
structure of the NFC is shifting right now because of
what Green Bay is. And I went on the record
and said, I said, if there's a year for somebody
to shake things up and be a force in the
NFC green Bay could very well be that team.

Speaker 4 (24:57):
Yep, and they are proving it and they are approving. Yes,
Jaden Daniels.

Speaker 3 (25:05):
Seventeen yards on seven carries, he doesn't have that. He
averages fifty eight yards a game to sixty five.

Speaker 2 (25:15):
Well, as a team, they ran for fifty one on
nineteen carries, two point seven. And you know, listen under.

Speaker 4 (25:23):
Against the Giants last week before, just a minute.

Speaker 2 (25:26):
Ago, and if that sounds like what the students put
up against the Jets, well, Jayden Daniels was twenty four
to forty two, two hundred yards. But again some of that,
you know, comes in prevent time out. I will give
Washington credit. They were getting pretty much man handled all game.
They come down in the fourth quarter, impressive touchdown drive

(25:46):
led by Daniels, they get to within a score. But
what does Green Bay do just when you think, you know,
I started to wonder, is this gonna be like that?
The the Thursday night you know, the Monday night game
in WOD last night, Thursday night game, the Monday night
game in which Chicago was leading and winning and getting
the better of it, and all of a sudden, Minnesota
just swept the rugout from underneath him, pulled the rugout

(26:09):
from underneath him, and dominated the fourth quarter and ran
away with the victory. I thought, man, is washing like
a I know it's early season. I know it's not
the playoffs, but that was a quality I don't want
to call it a championship drive, but that was a
quality drive by Green Bay. They could have looked around
and said, wait a minute, now we're only up by seven.

(26:30):
We've totally dominated this game. And yeah, and then they
just Jordan Love marched him right down the field. Next
drive for a touchdown got it back to fourteen. A
bit of a garbage time touchdown by the Commanders, you know.
Then by the way, green Bay comes up with a
stop then kicks a field goal. I mean, it was
just over at that point. It's twenty seven to ten.

(26:52):
And then give the Commander's credit, they battled and they
fought back and they scored a touchdown. But if you
see twenty seven to eighteen and you didn't see the game,
wasn't that close. Believe me, it was not that close.
Green Bay dominated this game.

Speaker 3 (27:06):
Green Bay was all over the place, and you know,
I think just how fast everybody was flying around. The
confidence level in this team is a lot different from
a year ago. And I've called my fair share of
Green Bay games over the last four years, and it

(27:30):
didn't look anything like the other ones that I've called before.
They did not. And maybe I'm maybe.

Speaker 4 (27:37):
People are like, why is Max over here? You know,
praising this so much? Is because I watched the other
the other four years. I watched Jordan Love take over.

Speaker 3 (27:47):
The reins from Aaron and and the growth that he's
had to have with the receivers. I mean, Tucker Kraft
was off the chain, absolutely, Like I don't believe you
guys have man. Tucker Craft look good in that game.
Luke Musgrave also had a solid get, like he's utilizing
his tight ends. And I say this because what do

(28:10):
we have a plethora of Kinger on our team? Tight ends?
Just saying just saying tight ends. I mean, Jordan learned
from somebody sat there and watched somebody. I'm just saying,
you know, and when when when you are of the
ilk of a of Aaron Rodgers, you know, Jordan, Jordan
watched that. Jordan's sat and watched, just like Aaron had

(28:32):
to sit and watch Brett. And you can't help but
pick some things up along the way. And you know,
even though Jordan has something that Aaron did not have
his entire career in Green Bay, he has a Matthew
Golden who's a first round draft pick.

Speaker 4 (28:46):
Yep, Aaron never got one of those.

Speaker 3 (28:48):
He never got a first round wide receiver targeting by.

Speaker 4 (28:52):
The way, yeah who And he'll get better.

Speaker 3 (28:56):
But how crazy was Green Bay on Draft night when
they announced that they were actually getting a first round receiver.
That has to stick in the back of Aaron's mind.
I'm just saying, listen, I don't need to give him
any extra cannon fighter. He could generate plenty of his own.
He generates his own ammo. You know, he's like those
old school reloaders, you know that that make their own

(29:18):
bullets and stuff. You know, I mean he he creates
his own situation.

Speaker 4 (29:23):
Uh, you know he's not He's not going to be
short on on emotional chips on shoulders.

Speaker 3 (29:28):
But I'm just saying, when that game comes to Saturday,
Sunday night and after sure it's it is going to
be a very very tense environment because of all those things.
But Green Bay is a real tea and a real
super I believe a real Super Bowl.

Speaker 4 (29:46):
Contendent this year.

Speaker 2 (29:47):
Totally agree, and that's certainly what they look at. By
the way, the other thing with green Bay, it might
have stung a little less for Aaron Rodgers in that
offense if all of the first round pick green Bay
used on defense. I mean, year after year, first round pick,
they had seven of them. I think at one time

(30:07):
they had seven first round picks on their defense and
it never rose above just average. It wasn't like that
group of seven first round pack I think it was
seven seven first round picks on defense turned into a snarling,
dominating unit, you know, and Aaron Rodgers had that for him.

(30:28):
They're getting in the ball back a lot, and then
you know he does the you know, he does his magic.
And then they used all these They could have used
all those picks on offensive linemen and receivers and running
backs and just said we're gonna beat you forty to
thirty eight. Instead they went out and didn't add to
the offense. And then the defense just look, I understand
the philosophy. It's just that the picks didn't pan out

(30:50):
for him. And now you know you have a defense.
And I think you're right on Max. I think that
it was already an interesting division because is Detroit you know,
you lose both your coordinators, and what what's that going
to look like? And Chicago looks like they're team in
the Riots. And Minnesota's got a new quarterback and JJ
McCarthy who missed all last year, MISSUS rookie season. So

(31:13):
all of a sudden, the strongest division in football. You know,
there are there are teams that have some you know,
either weaknesses or perceived weaknesses. And green Bay's I think
their weakness was just somebody that could lift up that defense.
And Micah Parsons is the kind of guy that can
lift up that defense. And I think that acquisition, they

(31:36):
gave up a lot to get them, but I think
that acquisition could put Green Bay in another category.

Speaker 4 (31:45):
Yeah, I completely agree.

Speaker 3 (31:47):
I concur and I think for for a team like
Green Bay, this is this is your elevation moment.

Speaker 4 (31:55):
This is this is you.

Speaker 3 (31:56):
Have spent a lot of resources, like you said, defensively,
but you've got some quality quality day two picks on offense,
Like I said, a pair, a pair of tight ends,
a trio of wide receivers, you know, I mean, you know,
and that's before you got to Matthew.

Speaker 4 (32:14):
Golden being in there, so you know, you look.

Speaker 3 (32:18):
At that the offensive line has has has some upgrades
that you need on it.

Speaker 4 (32:24):
But this team is something else.

Speaker 3 (32:26):
I never thought they would move on from Aaron Jones,
but they went and got Josh Jacobs.

Speaker 4 (32:31):
Hello, Josh Jacobs.

Speaker 2 (32:33):
He is good.

Speaker 3 (32:33):
He is super talented. That's a first round pick that
you have in the backfield. He was a first round
pick for the Raiders. And granted, I'm not crying for
the Raiders because the Raiders now have Ashton genty.

Speaker 4 (32:46):
But it took a year.

Speaker 3 (32:47):
It took a year to get a gent like you
had to go you had to go through, you had
to go through a rough year. Last year you had
you had to fire another coach, you know, and and
now now.

Speaker 4 (32:57):
You have Pete Carroll. But hmm, it is it is.

Speaker 3 (33:02):
It is looking like that NFC is shaping up to
be a meat grinder again this year, especially in the
NFC North, similar to the AFC North. It's a meat
grinder in our division as well. So it's going to
be a tough matchup come Sunday night. I think it's
October yeah, and.

Speaker 2 (33:19):
Uh, and of course we'll get their first AFC North
opponent in Minnesota in Ireland, right looking for one. Yeah,
so I was gonna do the keys of the game here,
but let's not rush it, because.

Speaker 4 (33:34):
Yeah, let it breathe. Open that bottle and let it
breathe a little.

And we thank you very much for being with us

to give you the Seattle perspective that's coming up next.
Our Missy matt Views always has her finger on the
pulse of the Pittsburgh Steelers and she will be joining
us with her view of from inside the locker room.

(35:11):
So we had that coming up. But first I mentioned
this last time. We didn't quite get to it, but
it is now time for our keys to the game,
presented by your neighborhood Ford Story. The F one fifty
is the official truck of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Steelers taking
on Seattle. Steelers are one to oh Seattle zero to one,
and even with the injuries that we discussed, it looks

(35:34):
like right now, depending on what happens today, more prevalent
for Seattle and their secondary Although Joey Porter Junior did
not practice yesterday, but three of the six one of
the six top six defenders for Seattle their second round
pick Nicki Minoorri. He's definitely out of the game two.
Others did not practice yesterday. So as we stand here

(35:57):
right now, we're not one hundred percent sure who's going
to be in who's going to to be out. But
you know, this is a Seattle team desperate for a win.
They were ten and seven a year ago. They considered
themselves playoff contenders, they considered themselves NFC West title contenders.
But they're on in one right now. So what are
the keys to this game?

Speaker 4 (36:15):
Max? As you see it keys of the game.

Speaker 3 (36:19):
It's funny, these are actually probably both pretty pretty consistent.
Own the line of scrimmage, own the trenches, run the
ball and stop the run. Like that's really the key
to this game, because the secondaries for both of us
are you know, quote unquote banged up. Of course, I
feel way better about our secondary than I do about

(36:40):
Seattle secondary, but that that's where the emphasis is gonna be.
You know, for the Steelers offensively, you had a bad showing,
you know, out out in Week one against the Jets.

Speaker 4 (36:54):
Didn't really run the ball.

Speaker 3 (36:55):
Aaron Rodgers got hit eleven times between sacks and quarterback hits.
You've got to be able to create a pocket, a
picket fence around Aaron Rodgers, and you've got to be
able to blow open some holes for the for the
running for the running game, and you've got to stick

(37:16):
to blocks. You got to stick to your double teams.
You can't jump off too quick, you can't get edged,
and that's going to be a good challenge. You've got
another good, really really good defensive line that has some
known suspects, as Mike Tomlin will call it, and you've
got to be able to handle that situation. And it's
no more in my bads, And I know what I
got to do is better go do it like put

(37:39):
up a shut up, right, you know, show me that
you learned from last week's mistake, because what you put
on tape is going to follow you and haunt you
for the next four games. And if you don't stomp
out that fire, but while it's still like a little
small flame or a spark, it's going to grow into

(38:00):
wildfire and people are going to test you against your
weaknesses because they saw somebody else have success on it.
So you've got to go out there and you've got
to make a conscious effort to go make that weakness
a strength on the offensive side of the ball. Like
that's that's that's my one thing. I mean, listen, passing

(38:20):
game looked good when Aaron was on the move and
when he was doing stuff and Art's spistal was getting creative.
It was working great in the passing game to manufacture
those things you lacked of in the run game. But
this week, I need to see it. I need to
see it. Twelve personnel, heavy personnel, whatever personnel that's gonna

(38:41):
run the ball. You need to run that ball, and
you need to tote that rock, and those yards have
to come up. The yards for carrier have to come up,
and you've got you've got to go decide that I
am going to go take this yardage. Nobody's gonna give
you yardage. You have to decide you're gonna go take
the yardage from the opponent. The defenders want to defend grass, Well,

(39:03):
guess what, I need all of these blades of grass
and you could defend it, but I'm still taking it.
That's the mentality you got to have. You got to
have that road grading mentality when it comes to the
run game, because run game is attitude. Run game is attitude.
It's want to and it's a very physical mindset to
have and that's what I need to see. Offensively, That's

(39:25):
that's going to be my key. Run the ball effectively.
I don't want you to just throw up random mindless
you know, run plays, run with a purpose, back it up,
run it out, run it out of the same personnel groupings,
different different formation looks, but do the same thing. Get
good and create your bread and butter plays. We don't

(39:48):
have any bread and butter run plays right now that
we can just hang our hat on.

Speaker 4 (39:52):
You have to go create them, and you have to
go make it.

Speaker 2 (39:54):
So I love it, Max, I love it because you
need to have balance. And not only that, but when
you look at the top teams in the NFL a
year ago, they were near the top and rushing. Now,
some of that is coming out of the quarterback position.

(40:14):
I do understand that. And the Steelers are not going
to get a lot of rushing yards out of the
quarterback position. I feel pretty safe in saying Aaron Rodgers,
who's I don't think he's ever run for four hundred
in his career, is not going to run for eight
hundred and fifty all of a sudden. So the running
is going to come from the running back position, which
would be an interesting article to parse out. You know,

(40:37):
as far as you know runs by quarterbacks, designed runs
by quarterbacks versus just runs by running backs, and what
that means and what it could mean to a team,
you know, the traditional days, I think of looking at
the yardage and deciding which is the best running team,
you know, it probably has to be reevaluated within the

(40:59):
con text of how you're trying to run the football
and where those rushing yards come from. I mean, you know,
if Jaden Daniels or or Justin Fields or Lamar Jackson
goes back to pass you're playing man and they step
up get a forty yard run, Well, that's not a
designed run. That's not running the ball when you're trying
to run the ball. And I think what you're looking
for here, Max, is the Steelers' ability to run the

(41:21):
football when they want to run the football.

Speaker 4 (41:27):
Yes, that's exactly what I'm looking for.

Speaker 3 (41:30):
I need them not only to want to, I need
them to desire and feel the necessity for running the
football effectively. And you know, in my career, especially early on,
that was our identity in Pittsburgh, young Ben Roethlisberger years,

(41:51):
it was running the football was our identity. And then
we used the play action and we used the signature
passing game. You know, because at one point you have
to remember, at one point, like Ben's win percentage was
tied directly on how well we ran the ball, Like
he slew the ball twenty five times or fewer. We
had like a ninety percent win rate back in the day.

Speaker 2 (42:13):
Yes, so people forget too that there was you know, look,
Ben is a Hall of Famer, no question, but he
had some adjustments to make, right. I mean early on
in his career, his third season when they kind of
took the shackles off and he went seven and eight
as a starter. For this year, theres he led the

(42:34):
league with twenty three interceptions. Now, he did that later
on in his career as well in twenty eighteen, but
he also had thirty four touchdown passes that year. He
had eighteen in two thousand and six. So there's an
adjustment period from running the football and throwing the football.
But I'm just trying to underscore what you're saying. In
those early years before Ben became and you know, he

(42:55):
still had some gunslinging tendencies there, but before he became
that guy, it took a transition and it was the
running game that was leading to the uh the Steerers
to a lot of victories.

Speaker 4 (43:07):
Yeah, it was.

Speaker 3 (43:07):
And I'm not saying that we need that to lead
us to victories, but we do need balance. We do
need to have a sense of completeness that when in doubt,
we can run it out, like to be able to
create that four minute offense where you just grind out
clock in the fourth quarter. That's a special skill set

(43:29):
and something you have to develop over time. You develop
trust and you developed a chemistry with your team to
develop that type of mindset. But you've got to work
it and you've got to have some successes along the way.
You need to build your confidence in that. And I'm
going to say it again. I looked at I've looked

(43:51):
at I've looked at film. I looked at Seattle and
when they were trying to run the ball, and I
looked at how these other teams. Will you think of Baltimore,
you think of the Eagles, You think of all these
teams that have these marquee run games. Los Angeles, Las
Vegas three point stance?

Speaker 4 (44:13):
Is that easy? Is that easy?

Speaker 3 (44:16):
We ain't got to make it hard, but your initial
leverage leads to success. Lower man wins. Wolf said this
for how many decades? Lower man wins? And when you
started a two point stance, you're saying, I don't want

(44:36):
to be the lower man.

Speaker 4 (44:39):
I don't care how cool it is. I don't care
what system you came in. Nothing.

Speaker 3 (44:44):
It might be archaic, it might be old school, but
guess what, durn it is tried, tested and true. If
I fire out from a three point stance, I am
going to at least be level, if not lower than
my opponent of the time. He's actually one hundred percent
of the time of the time, if not higher.

Speaker 2 (45:05):
Ye yah, it's hard to do one hundred percent of
the time, but uh he is. Max Starks, I'm Rob.
Can we talk a little bit about the Steelers defense
and their keys? We also have Missy Matthews coming up.
We're going to take a trip behind enemy lines. Max,
we are going to go and we're gonna be talking
Paul Moyer from Seattle, a player, former player, former coach,

(45:27):
and part of the radio broadcast team. All that is
coming up next hour when we continue inside the locker
room with King and Starks, presented by our neighborhood Forks
