Speaker 2 (00:25):
And thanks for being with us in the locker room
on this Tuesday morning. As we are going to take
a look back at what happened on Monday night football,
we begin to take that those first steps on the
path toward a very important game on Sunday night with
the Green Bay Packers coming to town. Steelers, they got
(00:46):
a tough schedule coming up. Man, it's gonna be fun.
I want to let you know that Alvarro Martine is
scheduled to join us today. Bob Labriole. Of course it's
Tuesday with labs, so expecting to have labs with this
as well.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
Max.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
Uh, we're gonna go around the NFL and a little bit.
But but before we kind of officially dip our toes
into those waters.
Speaker 3 (01:07):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
My first question, of course, as always, is how are
you on this fine Tuesday morning.
Speaker 4 (01:12):
Hey, I am I am doing just dandy. Everything's fine
and hunky dory. We're cool, We're great. Uh yeah, I'm
trying to trying to psych myself out here because what
what I witnessed and what I had to report on
last night was bad.
Speaker 5 (01:34):
But so we're we're gonna We're gonna be okay. We're
gonna be okay.
Speaker 4 (01:40):
I'm excited about obviously the Mike Tomlin news conference.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Yes, that's right right after our show.
Speaker 4 (01:46):
I'm just excited about moving on to the next week because,
you know, like everything that happened this week was just
upside down.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
So I went in this weekend. You know, we don't
get too many weekends off, and I'll get too many
Sundays up. Monday night football game. You got a chance
to watch some Sunday football. Thursday night football game, you
got a chance to watch some Sunday football. Not all
Sundays and and Mondays and Thursdays are created equal, right,
we all understand that, we all know that this weekend.
(02:18):
I looked at those matchups I mentioned this yesterday, and
I thought, man, oh man, Sunday off. Okay, smarting from
the Thursday night loss, but ready to sit down and
just you know, do what the rest of America is doing.
Melt into my couch or my easy chair, watch some football,
let the dog out when necessary, keep the refrigerator in
mind always, and just enjoy the day. And I thought,
(02:43):
Rams Jaguars Man, that's gonna be a great game. Nope,
one o'clock game, well, that'll be a good game. Nope,
four o'clock game that surely that'll be a good game. Nope,
Monday night football game. Come on, that's Sunday night football game. Sorry,
jumped head, Nope. And the Monday night football games. That
was another note. Did you see the weekend kind of
(03:04):
the same way? Other than the Colt Thriller and maybe
one or two other games, this pretty much being a
weekend that you know. The Packers game was a good game,
didn't live up to what I thought it was going
to live up to, including last night's games.
Speaker 4 (03:20):
Well, I mean, you know, I look at it, and yeah,
there was a lot of doozies, a lot of whoppers,
and not a lot of excitement. And I think that
was I mean, heck, the one game, the game I
had at the one o'clock window, yeah, was it was
a shutout blowout, you know, And so it was it
(03:41):
was probably, I would say, now the second worst game
I I I watched on the weekend because I am
hard pressed to find something as bad as that. And
I will tell you this, the Seattle Seahawks and the
Houston Texans tried their darnedest last night to be worse
(04:03):
in the game that literally only had one team scoring.
That's that's just how bad it was Monday night.
Speaker 3 (04:09):
But you're right.
Speaker 4 (04:10):
I mean I thought going into this match, like either
one of these matchups before we actually got to the
game could have stood alone as a Monday night YEP game.
But they decided to make it a doubleheader. And I
think that was that was where you're like, oh man,
you about to get double the tree. You about to
double up on some great football.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
Eh.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
And I'll say this, I mean, Detroit Lions looked good again,
but then again, I remember what they looked like a
week before.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
Ye, And that's right? Is it your? Is it me?
Speaker 5 (04:42):
Or is the number one seed in the power ranking?
The death kiss?
Speaker 3 (04:46):
Don't want it? Don't want it?
Speaker 4 (04:48):
No, don't want it? Keep me at like five, you
know what I'm saying. No, but you're better than that. No, No, No,
I'm a five no, really, really, I'm a five you know, yeah.
Speaker 3 (04:59):
Yes, I agree. I certainly certainly in the rankings.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
You know, you'd like to have that still like that
a home game, and that's certainly something to Steelers are
going to push toward. And look, number one of the
conference is still out there. There's just such a long
way to go. You can't even have that conversation till December.
You just can't. I mean, you know, we bring it
up in November and we get fired up about it.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
And then it's just it's just way too early.
Speaker 6 (05:22):
You know.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
I'll say this about the Lions Bucks game. The Lions
looked fantastic. They've got that great one two punch it
running back. Their defense looked outstanding. But I gotta tell you,
you know, I think that Baker Mayfield is going to
look back at this game and be like, wow, man,
(05:43):
that was not Baker Mayfield out there.
Speaker 3 (05:46):
It just looked to me, Max like he just wasn't
on target.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
He overthrew either too far, too high, too far out
in front. I mean, he had, he had, he had
a lot. Now, I'm not trying to take anything way
from the Lions defense, and I guess their secondary and
now now I'm conflating the two games. It was their
secondary that kept getting banged down, right, Yeah, so they
had a bunch of guys.
Speaker 4 (06:10):
Had they had zero starters on their secondary that we're in. Yeah,
all of their starters were out and everybody was a backup,
including Arthur Malett.
Speaker 6 (06:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
It was good to see Arthur former Steeler, Yeah, making
some nice plays out there as well. And then he
went down for a little while and then got back
up and got back in the game.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
Tough guy, Arthur Mallett.
Speaker 2 (06:30):
But but Max, I just I don't want to take
anything away from the Lions because who knows. You know, look,
the Lions may have decided to put the pedal to
the medal, and Dan Campbell, boy, he sure does not
like kicking field goals.
Speaker 3 (06:44):
You know.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
I think a field goal here or there, and that
that score is even worse. I mean, they could have
hung thirty on Tampa Bay easily. And I'm not saying
Tampa Bay could have won the game, but I think
if Baker had his normal game, it would have been
a lot more competitive.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
That's you know, maybe that.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
Shouldn't be my number one takeaway my number I guess
it's probably my number two two takeaway. My number one
takeaway is the Lions are back to being really, really good,
formidable team, just like they were last year, just like
they've been the last couple of years, an upper echelon
NFL team. I think without question. That's my number one takeaway.
(07:21):
My number two was that that just seemed like an
unbaker like performance to me, and.
Speaker 4 (07:28):
I would say Baker did not have nowhere near the
amount of weapons necessary.
Speaker 3 (07:36):
Yeah, Mike Evans going out hurt.
Speaker 4 (07:39):
He was down his top four receivers. Godwin didn't play,
McMillan didn't play. You had just gotten Mike Evans back,
and then he broke his and he broke his collar bone.
Speaker 5 (07:51):
He's out till by.
Speaker 3 (07:52):
The way, I didn't hear that. That was the official
news when he went down.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
My initial thought was concussion because he just laid there
and you could see him breathing, and I thought, I
think he knocked himself out. You know, they were talking
about his hamstring and stuff, and I'm like, I think
he's kaoed. And then they said his shoulder, and I thought, oh,
I didn't hear broken collar bone.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
What a bummer man that is?
Speaker 4 (08:14):
You rush back from a hamstring to me go in
the game and go down with a collar bone. Uh
so yeah, so you've lost him essentially for almost the
entire year.
Speaker 5 (08:24):
Brutal Bucky Irvin was out.
Speaker 4 (08:27):
Yeah, so you didn't have you starting running back, I
mean and Rashi White. So there was a lot of
stuff to work through for Baker, Yes, and he just
wasn't onto, just he wasn't in sync with with tz
even I know they had, you know, a good game
last week, so you know when you look at that,
and he and Baker tried to shoulder more of the responsibility, right,
(08:49):
He tried to put the team on his back, and
you realize, man, you gotta distribute, you gotta include everybody.
But I will say this that Lion's defensive line was
giving the business to the Tampa bay O line. They
were getting pushed around and that didn't help either. Yeah,
So Baker trying to do too much, not having his
(09:10):
normal cast of guys around him, and then you know
a Lion's team that was that was clicking on all
cylinders reci before disaster.
Speaker 3 (09:20):
Yeah. Yeah, And I think you're right. I think that,
you know, I should have.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
Taken that more into account because I'm seeing open receivers,
but timing, you know, feel for where a guy's going.
Is he gonna you know, if he's running in the
end zone. Me Yet, he overthrew a guy running in
the end zone wide open. I think that was later
in the game when they were trying to claw back
into it. They're moving left to right in the TV,
and you know, maybe he wants maybe he missed a throw,
(09:47):
or maybe he wants that receiver to angle differently. You
just don't know. You don't know unless you're out there.
But I do think you're right. I think that if
you want to excuse a night for Baker, the heavy
pass rush and the fact that he didn't have his
normal weapons out there, I think that's I should have
(10:07):
factored that in more when I was when I was
talking about that.
Speaker 4 (10:12):
Yeah, no, but I mean, but at the end of
the day, right, if the guys are going to step
up and play, they should be able to. If you
put the uniform on, you're going to walk out on
the field, you should be able to go out there
and perform. And I just think there was just a
little bit off on their sync with each other, and
I think that's what kind of led to how it
(10:34):
just was kind.
Speaker 5 (10:34):
Of kind of off a little bit for them.
Speaker 4 (10:37):
And so that was that was one of the tough
things trying to figure that out. But like I said,
I mean, these are all NFL competitors. I mean, you
don't complain when guys get injured. That's a part of
this game. Remember, it's a matter of when, not if
that's going to happen. You're going to get attrition in
some form or fashion.
Speaker 5 (10:55):
But but yeah, it was, it was. It was rough.
Speaker 3 (10:59):
So we have more to talk about.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
But we we want to talk to our good friend
Alvarro Martine and that is coming up next as we
return in the Locker Room presented by O Neighborhood Ford
Store and the Steelers Pro Shop on Steelers Nation Radio,
a part of the Steelers Audio Network.

Speaker 2 (11:47):
Yeah, not that DUTs down ain't probably ain't Gameley bet
Burn not the down.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
Echo in Friday.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
See, I caught abierto, which I think means open.
Speaker 3 (12:03):
I'm pretty sure I know what improbable and incredible means. Uh.
Speaker 2 (12:07):
I do know what that golden voice means. It means
our very good friend. Alvao Martin is joining us play
by play man on the this either Spanish speaking broadcast.
Speaker 3 (12:19):
Phenomenal call, Alvaro, phenomenal call.
Speaker 2 (12:22):
I also I also understood that that was the touchdown
pass to Pat Friremuth.
Speaker 3 (12:27):
I'm getting better. Maybe this heard words Friarmth.
Speaker 6 (12:31):
Since I've joined the Since I've joined these calls on
Tuesday mornings ten twenty Eastern, I've been thinking how do
I make my calls easy so that everybody could understand them. See,
I am the anti bad bunny. I'm not going to
give you four months to learn Spanish. I'm gonna make
it easy on you.
Speaker 2 (12:48):
Oh, oh, Alva, They're such a great call and so
great to have you on.
Speaker 3 (12:54):
Uh. I hope you were you able to enjoy?
Speaker 2 (12:57):
No, you you uh, you went right back to work
on Friday, didn't you You didn't go home, you didn't
relaxes right back to words.
Speaker 6 (13:03):
Yes, indeed now and now the NBA starts tonight, I've
got to cover that league as well. So busy season
until football ends. But it's really the happy part of
the season to me. One begins to ramp up and
the other ones AT's peak. I mean, can can anybody
tell them who's gonna win the Super Bowl? Right now?
Speaker 2 (13:22):
Absolutely, we're talking about the same thing. Max, No, no clue.
I've never seen this. This is the most balanced. I mean,
I try not to slap down this hyperbolic h you know,
pablem But I just you know, I don't believe that.
You know, everything's greater, bigger, But I I just I
(13:45):
don't know, man, I don't think I've ever seen a
season like this.
Speaker 6 (13:48):
Max, Well, we have not seen people. We have not
seen teams on Moss not play their starters in the preseason.
So that has to be one one reason why we're
seeing what we're seeing.
Speaker 4 (14:03):
Well, I mean, I look at that and I agree
over I feel like people use the first month of
the season as their new preseason to get guys into
the mode. The problem is it counts, and so that's
where I don't really agree with it, but I get
what the concept is is, Oh, we're trying to get
our guys to the regular season because we've paid them
(14:26):
these exorbient contracts and we're trying.
Speaker 5 (14:28):
To protect them. And so why do we have a preseason.
The preseason is.
Speaker 4 (14:31):
So you don't look like crap in September. But apparently
teams are okay with looking like crap. If everybody else
is looking like crap, right, you know, it's it's who
has the less warts coming out of it.
Speaker 5 (14:43):
But at the same time, that's kind of the hole that.
Speaker 4 (14:46):
We dug ourselves into when it comes to this perspective
and it being that.
Speaker 5 (14:52):
It's so tough to.
Speaker 4 (14:56):
See what a team is going to be. Now we're
starting to see teams round into shape, and I think
that's why we have such volatility as the teams that
got to a quick start, but then now they're dealing
with a lot of injuries. I mean, we saw it
last night, right, Alvaro. I mean you look at Tampa Bay,
you know, you look at what Detroit and their secondary
and then obviously what the.
Speaker 5 (15:16):
Houston Texas well.
Speaker 4 (15:17):
I don't think you can excuse away the Houston Texans
horrible offensive performance, but there's a lot of that going around,
and it seems like every week people want to power
rank and crown a team the number one, and the
power rankings every week and it feels like the kiss
of death. I told Rob that, I was like, if
you're going to be picked as number one, just just
(15:39):
expect to lose. I mean, that's essentially what it is,
the way the way that it's going. But I think
for my for my kind of thought process and my
question to you, you know, you you've seen a lot
of football, and and you've seen a lot of sports.
Speaker 5 (15:54):
I mean, would this be probably the.
Speaker 4 (15:57):
Most balanced year you've seen as far as not being
kind of clear who any front runners are right now?
Speaker 5 (16:04):
Because there's literally I mean, I get the only one
you could call is the Chiefs.
Speaker 4 (16:07):
But the teams are four and three, So they just
got above five hundred on Sunday and they're looking like
the better team. But we also remember what they look
like five weeks ago, and we would never have said that.
So in my mind, is is that how you feel?
Have you seen any other seasons has been like this?
Speaker 6 (16:27):
I will say that I have not seen a moment
a thirdy into the season where there's such clear lack
of clarity. I mean, you can throw in Indianapolis. So
it's not the disrespectful.
Speaker 5 (16:37):
They had a great scenae, yeah, exactly.
Speaker 6 (16:38):
Yeah, and they should be on that list. But in general,
in other words, a month and a half from now,
there'll be definition. But right now, at this stage of
the season, about a thirty into the season, normally you
get a handle on the season, and you cannot right now,
and you cannot trust the team that's up in the
stands to show up and be consistent and begin to
(16:59):
shoot championship level domination of opponents good or bad. You're
not seeing that anymore. You're not seeing that anymore. I mean,
I have to say, you know, part of it again
is the lengthier season, international games gonna throw you off.
I mean, what happened to Jacksonville on her home game
in London? What happened to them? And how did the
(17:23):
Rams pull that off? That they arrive in London on
a Saturday and they're from the West Coast and they
looked at the sharper team. What pills it they think?
Speaker 4 (17:30):
I need to know if you s eight hour time difference,
bodyclock difference, eight hour difference.
Speaker 6 (17:37):
So they figured something out and Jacksonville didn't. And that's
that performance. You may say, well the Ram's gonna win
that game, okay, but that performance the wait went was
not what you expected. And that's part of what we're
saying now a question. Imagine if Anon Rodgers and we
we're not gonna believe the point is what he didn't
throw up early. That's just history right right now and
(17:59):
possible for a good reason. But imagine if he had
been with the team early, where would he be now?
I mean he's leaving the NFL in touchdown passes? Where
would he be now? Where would the olne be now?
Where would the receivers be now? If he had started
and played through a little bit of the preseason, just
more than he did obviously at the Latrow, where would
(18:19):
that team and that team's offense be right now?
Speaker 2 (18:22):
Yeah, I think that's a good question. I would also
say this, Alvaro. You know, I saw going to some
people from Cincinnati and I mentioned this to Max yesterday
or maybe Friday, I can't remember which day, but you know,
asking why people around the country weren't higher on the
Steelers because I viewed them as a team that went
ten and seven a year ago, improved almost across the board,
(18:46):
had three guys they drafted last year who essentially didn't place.
He had them to kind of It's almost like he
had too first two seconds and two late round picks
that you could throw back into the mix. Upgraded quarterback,
and they said, we weren't sure that it was an
upgraded quarterback. We weren't sure that Aaron Rodgers still had
anything left in the tank. And I think, you know,
(19:07):
I'd like to dive in with you about the disappointments
to Thursday night's game, But if you're watching around the country,
or if you were a Steelers fan that for some
reason was on the fence, because I think you know,
I certainly was way off the fence and way in
the Rogers camp before Thursday night's game. But I don't
know how you could watch that game on Thursday night
(19:28):
and not think, man, this guy has still got enough
to be able to lead a team deep into the
playoffs if they If they don't win, it's probably not
going to be because of him.
Speaker 3 (19:39):
I just saw he looked great.
Speaker 6 (19:41):
He's the MVP of the team, and he probably was
on the on the list of league MVP candidates. And
he's playing under duress. He's playing it's got to get
rid of the ball in two and a half seconds
or less. He's kind of figuring things out, and so
he's been doing wonders, I think, and most importantly at
this point, he seems to be enjoying the process. You know,
(20:04):
say for a Broderick Jones tackle here and there. I
think he enjoys the process of being with this team,
the culture, the way the locker room works. I think
that the fact that the media here can be inquisitive,
but they're not going to be just nasty to you,
and they know football enough to know what to ask
(20:26):
and not to ask. And so I think he enjoys
all of that. And the other thing you get the
sense is that he's looking around every single day and
trying to remember it because this may be the last year.
So I think there's a little bit of nostalgia as well.
But so far he's in a happy place and his
team is in a good place, and again I think
the best is yet to come. Right now for the Steelers,
(20:49):
the offense is not the problem. I mean, they are
scoring in first drives. They are scoring when they're at
the two. They are scoring generally in the red zone.
Really not except for the last two games, of course,
not committing the kind of penalties that take you out
of drives. If you have to bring in Corla's weightman,
(21:09):
his punts are great. They end up in the last
twenty yards. The team is playing well in that sense.
It's the defense that's really under the microscope right now.
Speaker 4 (21:20):
You're absolutely right the defense, and a lot of resources
were allocated to that defense.
Speaker 5 (21:25):
Just think about free agency, right Alvaro.
Speaker 4 (21:27):
I mean, we bring in a swath of new defensive
backs and secondary pieces. We use some draft resources for
the defensive line as well and outside linebacker to bolster
that position. And this was about as full strength as
they could have been going into this game on Thursday.
(21:49):
And I know it was shorthanded, but isn't this why
they built the team.
Speaker 5 (21:53):
They built the team.
Speaker 4 (21:54):
For this type of game, for this type of team
with these type of receivers. And it was just, I think,
kind of a letdown for the first litmus test of
why you brought this team together, why you expended the resources.
Speaker 5 (22:11):
It was to combat Jamar Chase and.
Speaker 4 (22:13):
T Higgins and it's like, you know, you didn't do that,
and you didn't contain you know, one of the league's
worst rushing attacks as well. And it was and like
you said, the defense goes under that microscope that they
were under weeks one and two. But weeks one and
two you had the excuses, right, You had injuries. You
had a lot of starters that were unavailable because of injury.
(22:36):
And this was like, no, they're healthy. They've been on
a tear for the last couple of weeks. The expectations
started to build for the defense and the team in general,
and then it just it just got dropped in your lap.
Speaker 5 (22:50):
Seven of nine of those drives, six in a row
at one.
Speaker 4 (22:53):
Point where they just they just they just went on
a tear and you could not stop quote unquote old
man Flacco. And you couldn't and you couldn't stop the
offensive attack of the of the Cincinnati Bengals.
Speaker 6 (23:10):
The team has done something very interesting and the whital,
of course, was at the front office in Philaelphia and
I did some numbers yesterday. Last year, the Steelers devoted
the second most money within the cap to the safety position,
about almost thirty million dollars second most in the league.
This year they're twenty second. I'm sorry, they're fifteenth. So
(23:33):
they've got they've traded off like in Phillelpia, did money
spent on the safety position in this case Minka on
that trade to bring in corners. Pittsburgh was twenty second
and money spent on corners last year. They're now ninth.
So they've brought in quality quote unquote, but we're brought
in older corners. The only one that's under thirty is
(23:55):
Joey Porter Junior. And it's shown. It's just shown that
speed is not there. Brandonnkels would be speed, a speedy
Bedie Bishop with all of his perceived faults would be speedy,
but not the guys that are there and not on
a consistent basis. And when you've got Flacco reading the
field perfectly well, diagnosing okay that they're doing this or
(24:18):
I'm doing that, and throwing the ball real quick, nobody
gets to them. It's a very tough day. I think
the most disappointing thing is when you have those early
effective runs by a team that had been struggling, and
that offensive line was struggling on the on the on
the runs, on the rush, and I thought that was
the bone breaker. And what I saw was a lot
(24:39):
of linebackers getting antsy, just realizing I got to do
my job, but I may have to do somebody else's
job because they may not do their job, and we
may have a trouble. Troll here with a carry with
Chase Brown, and I saw a lot of people out
of position and an over committee and just getting out
of lanes and just anxious it can have happen. It
(25:00):
happened earlier in the season. I think the long was learned.
Derek Harmon came back. That was a big, big reason
why it got better. But now they're back at it.
To me, that's the most disappointing thing. You cannot make
Darius Slave quicker. By the way, he was the quickest
in the combine his year, but it's been a bunch
of years since. But you cannot make him any quicker
(25:21):
right now. But the rush, you're you're posting team's running game.
That's got to be shut down or controlled. That has
to be prier number one. That cannot happen. It just
cannot happen. That's what pittfs about. That's how you make
DJ Watt and high Smith and Herbie effective when you
put him in those situations. That was really tough to watch.
(25:44):
That was not what I expected at all in that game.
I just couldn't believe it, truly, And then I began
to see the tape and everybody got antsy. Everybody was
look during the assignment, but keeping an eye on the
other guy's assignment to see if they broke down. I
gotta do that. I gotta go over there and do something.
And that's not the way they play at their best.
And it was. It was just a tough watch. This
(26:05):
tough thing to watch.
Speaker 3 (26:07):
It was a tough watch.
Speaker 2 (26:08):
And I agree with you that you know, look, you
have Chase and you have Higgins, and it's one thing
to say, this is why we went out and got Ramsey.
And you know you're hoping to coach a year at
a sleigh. You know who is the excuse me, the oldest,
the oldest of those three corners. You know, Chase and
Higgins are going to get theirs. And but I think
(26:31):
if you give a quarterback and Flachell got rid of
the ball pretty quickly, but if you give him a
clean pocket from which to throw, those guys are going
to get their catches.
Speaker 3 (26:40):
They're gonna get their catches regardless.
Speaker 2 (26:42):
There's a reason Jamar Chase is making the money he's
making and Higgins is making the money he's making.
Speaker 3 (26:46):
But I agree with you, Alvarro that you know to me,
I did a show.
Speaker 2 (26:50):
I do a show called the Matchup with Matt Williamson
and Missy on Thursday, and my key was to don't
let Brown run because because they could do, they wound
up being able to do whatever they wanted to on
Thursday night. They ran it when they wanted to, they
threw it when they wanted to. And I do agree that.
You know, if you if you can stop their run,
get him into one dimensional uh passing situations, that's you
(27:14):
at your best. However, that's not the only way to
get them to play the way you want to play.
Speaker 3 (27:21):
They they tried to blitz a little bit.
Speaker 2 (27:24):
They they have been successful in pushing pockets back and
they weren't able to do that. That I think surprised me.
You know, the holes in the running game and the
bit inability or the and maybe again I'm sure they
were scheming some of this, but I thought the front
of this Steelers was going to bully.
Speaker 3 (27:42):
That offensive line from the Bengals. And that's not what
I saw.
Speaker 6 (27:46):
And it's hard when the guy gets.
Speaker 3 (27:48):
Rid of the wall so quickly, exact exactly.
Speaker 6 (27:51):
Placo understands all the defensive schemes that there Austin has
and Mike Coumblin prefers. He understands them all. Now this
year they've made a little change. We're gonna blitz a
little bit more. All right, Listen, if I get rid
of the ball, I don't care how many people you
throw at me. I'm getting rid of the ball quickly,
and my receivers are up on it and they'll be
ready for that. And so the change in scheme was
(28:12):
prepared for it done, We're ready for it. Now. If
you go back to your conventional scheme, I'm going to
slice and dice you the way when I was in
Indianapolis and perhaps before in Baltimore, the way I'm going
to do it today. So to me the one when
it comes to tactical stuff. And again, please, this is
just a question I have. I don't know anything about
(28:34):
football compared to the people that make decisions, so I
don't want to put myself in their shoes. This sort
goes to this game, knowing that this is the fourth
worst passing defense in football Cincinnati's. But they also know
this is the worst rushing defense in football, the Bengals.
(28:55):
So how do you exploit them? And I remember in
our Immaculate podcast it comes out on Tuesdays and Thursdays,
we talked about, Gee, this may be the game when
you can do a lot of plays passing plays that
you couldn't do against really stout fronts. This may be
the game when Arthur gets creative. But boy, why don't
you just pound these people with a run and just
(29:16):
have one of those old Matt Canada games where you just,
you know, two thirds of the player runs, you eat
clock against a team that was the worst in terms
of time possession, and you just walk away with a
win in a tough spot. Second game in five days.
And I think the more I think about it, the
more I think, why did they not do that? Because
the running game was great, It was just tempting to
(29:39):
go after them without Hendrickson being in the game. But boy,
I thought to myself, maybe we need to start treating
Joe Flacco the way we treat Patrick Mahomes. Just get
him off the field, just play defense. With a ball
in your hands, with long drives on offense, just crush
them with your offensive line. That who's better attribute is
(30:00):
really blogging for the run. And and to me, that
was a slight missed opportunity different spots in the game,
especially when you were up ten nothing at the end
of the first half. But what do I know? You see,
what do I know? I mean to me again, it
was so tempting. No Hendrickson, Oh boy, let's go let's
let's just go to let's just have some fun with
(30:21):
the passing game. And you know, it was a tough thing,
Like like I said, tough thing to watch. One more note,
as they showed Joey Borrow sitting on the bench, I
thought to myself, Hey, Joe b you think you're you're
you think you're the original Joe Cool. No, the original
Joe Cools right now is taking your spot and playing
(30:42):
well on the field. And I thought to myself, Joey
Borrow better learn from Joe Flacco how to extend his
career and not get hurt, because if if Joe Flacker
knows something, it's just that. And I just hope that
Joey Borrow doesn't just wait out this stretch of season
when he's out with his toe and then comes back
(31:04):
and plays and doesn't learn a damn thing from Flac Grom,
because he's got a unique opportunity to learn a specific
trait that would help him tremendously with his history in
the NFL, to just be effective and extend his career.
So it's a little thought, and of course that would
hurt the Steelers if he learns that stuff, But I
just hope that he learns that for his own sake,
because he's a great quarterback and it's just terrible to
(31:25):
see him just sit there and do nothing.
Speaker 3 (31:28):
No, I agree.
Speaker 4 (31:30):
I mean, you know, I think for a lot of
these young quarterbacks, everybody wants them to be ready now.
They want them to be great now. And you realize
there's a lot of history in this game, a lot
of guys that have been there, done that, gone through
the fire. And you know, and I think this is
(31:50):
also a flaw of a of a young player, right
you come in, you know, as Wolf would say, you're
ten feet tall in your bulletproof, and you think that
there's nothing new to learn for yourself. You think you're
going to reinvent this game. It's like, no, you're just
simply the next iteration of it. There have been great
(32:11):
players before you, there would be great great players after you,
but there's history on their side. And just like you know,
I look at like a young Will Howard in that
quarterback room for us, what are you learning from Aaron Rodgers?
You have a unique opportunity to be up close personal
and ask from a guru how to play this game.
(32:32):
So you know, that's another thing I think about it
from the flip side, is how are we taking advantage
of watching a guy and Aaron Rodgers who, like you said,
leading the league and touchdown passes. You know, is effective
with getting the ball out, He's finding receivers, he's extending plays, the.
Speaker 5 (32:49):
Strength of his arm. Another guy learn about the health things.
Speaker 4 (32:53):
I mean, outside of the one year with the Jets,
Aaron Rodgers has been a pretty healthy quarterback throughout his career.
And look at the numbers that he's a that he's amassed.
So there there is that tale of learning from the
experienced guys. What is Derek Harmon and y A Black
and Logan Lee and company taken from a Cam Hayward
who's had had a long prolific career. I think all
(33:16):
of these things are matter. And that's where veteran leadership
does matter. And you have to sprinkle in just enough
youth that you pass on those traditions that they don't
get lost and and in the history books. And that's
that's what's pretty amazing to watch, is that the Steelers
have a unique opportunity to do that as well with
(33:38):
with the guys that they have on this team.
Speaker 6 (33:41):
No, it's so true. And and sometimes a young person
kicks himself because I don't there's a whole lot of
questions I don't even I can't even think about right
now because I'm not just experienced enough to know to
ask about them. So I would be racking my brains
in the shower every day. What category of questions have
I not even thought about? That I need to get
out of this guy as soon as I can, uh,
(34:02):
and then bring him donuts, you know, make him happy,
make him make him happy in the morning, and make
him make him worth spending time with you, worth his while,
and and just try to have a lifelong friend if
you could, a mentor that way. One little note, by
the way, guys, I watched again the video and Max
you will be able to talk about this with much
more authority. But I thought Broderick Jones has achieved a
(34:26):
new level of improvement playing left tackle. He does there's
a lot more decision in and and sort of intention
what he does. He's still doing a lot of combo
work with Somolo Isaac, which is great for both. I
think it extends Tomorow and it helps Broderick. But there
(34:46):
were many, many moments with against Miles Murphy that he
was one on one and he really basically gave Rogers
what he needed. I think the next step would be
to take the initiative and push this guy out of
the play constantly completely for four or five seconds, so
that Aaron doesn't even have to think about looking to
his left. But I thought he did a commendable job
(35:10):
one on one, a lot more one on ones, by
the way than I saw in earlier games, and just
holding his point long enough and with decent technique. There
was an element of not knowing what you're doing, of
being a little lost, of focusing on the wrong things
that I saw in this past game he got rid of.
And you may say, well, you know, he didn't have
(35:31):
a premier pass rusher against him whatever, I agree with you,
but I just thought that he took a step forward
in that development. And so when people jump on him
for whatever, you know, things he doesn't do, then you
need to begin to recognize me and start doing things right.
And I thought he took a step forward. I'd love
to hear your point of view. Max.
Speaker 3 (35:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (35:50):
No, I actually went on the field and I actually.
Speaker 4 (35:55):
Gave Broderick some kudos for how I've been playing over
the last couple of weeks, and it had been incrementally better.
The only thing I'm going to I'm just going to
push him on in the future is going to be strength.
He's got to get a little bit more physically strong
in his lower body. That's the difference that you're seeing, Right.
He has the athleticism, he has the attitude, and he
(36:18):
has the ability. It's now you've got to bring a
little bit something extra with it, right, You've got to
bring a little bit more. Oh, You've got to bring
a little more thud to it. And that's what strength
is going to do for him. You know, he's still learning,
he's still growing into his body and like you said,
going into and learning relearning the left tackle position because
I feel like he didn't really get that much experience
(36:40):
at Georgia. I mean we're talking about seventeen starts and
you know, for a majority of those games didn't have
to finish them. So the endurance and having that cardio
strength is something that he's working on and I think
that's building, but it's going to be the physical strength
in the off seasons the next step for him.
Speaker 5 (36:58):
But you're right.
Speaker 4 (36:59):
I mean he can get there with his feet, he's
a little late with his hands, and I think that's
because of a lack of strength. The stronger your body
is in a bent position, I should say, the levers
in the body create more strength. He's not really great
with that extension and spatial awareness yet to be able
to throw that punch and be wide. He still kind
(37:20):
of ducks his head into a lot of the hits
that he delivers, and it comes from the bent angle
and then a press position to get to where he needs.
When he gets to the point where he can throw
that hand out there and not worry about a guy
slapping it down and he can create that separation on contact,
that's when he's going.
Speaker 3 (37:37):
To be create.
Speaker 4 (37:39):
You know, he's going to even level up even more so, Alvaro.
But you're right, he's learning it. He's not thinking as much,
he's reacting and the next step for him is going
to be physical strength. That's the only thing that's lacking.
Everything else has been building nicely. And when we talk
about going through the first six games, you know, the
question mark kind of kind of us to curl up
(38:00):
a little bit more and just it almost becomes a colon.
It's no longer a question mark. It's is Rogerick Jones colon.
What's next? Clarify right, and that's gonna be strength, And
I think that's what makes that's what makes this process
also fun, is watching the growth of that group and
understanding who your quarterback is and sensing where he's going
(38:22):
to be to make sure that you keep that air,
that landing zone, and that firing zone clear for.
Speaker 3 (38:28):
For Aaron Alvarro, So thank you, my friend.
Speaker 2 (38:31):

Thanks as always to Alvarro Martine, the great play by
play man in the Spanish speaking broadcast for the Steelers.
Also busy right now with NBA work. Just a phenomenal
first class broadcaster and gentlemen. Great to have him on
our show as always. Wanted to remind you that coming
up next hour we have Bob Labriola. It is our
(40:20):
Tuesday with Labs and we will spend some time kind
of looking back to Thursday night, What happened, Why did
it happen?
Speaker 3 (40:28):
Where did the Steelers go from? Here?
Speaker 2 (40:30):
Is the sky falling? I know it's raining here in Pittsburgh.
I don't think that's the sky. I think it's just rain.
But we'll talk to Labs and get his opinion on
those matters. He's coming up at the top of the hour.
We're also going around the NFL and we will be
doing that next hour as well as we continue just
what has been a crazy topsy turvy season in the NFL.
(40:51):
I don't know how else to describe it. There just
is an incredible amount of parody, very little clarity at
this stage of the season. As Alvarro said, normally you
have some kind of idea about, you know, who's the
kaream rising to the top at this time of the season.
But you know, it looked like Tampa Bay and then
Detroit really kind of manhandled them last night, but then
(41:12):
Tampa had injuries, and so.
Speaker 3 (41:14):
Where do those teams sit? Is Detroit back on top? Now?
Are the Chiefs back on top? At four and three?
Speaker 2 (41:20):
A lot to get to as we try to put
the Steelers in their place in the NFL in context,
which we will get to next hour with Bob Labriola
as well when we continue in the Locker Room, presented
by your neighborhood Forward Store and the Steelers Pro Shop
on Steelers Nation Radio, a part of the Steelers Audio
Network
