Speaker 3 (00:28):
And thank you very much for being with us in
the locker room on this Thursday, getting you ready for
the Steelers and the Ravens. Big week, fun week to
prepare for. You know, as Max said yesterday, fun for
the fans, anxious for the fans, but fun is not
the word he would describe as a player with this
great rivalry and can't wait for this one, the rivalry
(00:51):
that started back in nineteen ninety six when the Ravens
joined the NFL. The Steelers have not only have the
edge in the series. But you know, this may, this may,
you know, not seem right for fans who are kind
of living in what the students have done, having lost
five of their last seven games, but the Studers have
(01:12):
won eight of the last eleven games. Mike Tomlin is
twenty two and eighteen against the Ravens. John Harbaugh is
seventeen and twenty one against Pittsburgh in Baltimore. The students
are fifteen and fifteen including the playoffs. They've also won
for the last six and six of the last nine
in the Ravens building. Now we remember last year not
(01:32):
good memories, and there are a lot of things to
kind of glean from the numbers and what we might
be able to expect coming up on Sunday. Want to
remind you as well that since it is Thursday, we
are very happy to be joined by our buddy Jerry Dulac,
who's going to be joining us in the locker room
in just a little bit. But there are some there
are some numbers, you know. I've I've talked a little
(01:55):
bit about having a difficult time sort of really using out,
you know, who the Steelers are other than six and six,
because they have some very very strange numbers. We talked
about the fact that the Steelers are one of just
a handful of teams that have led in every single game,
and yet they're six and six going into this past weekend.
(02:18):
All the other teams combined are twenty five and eight. Now,
how is that possible and how is it possible that
you could be leading in at least four of those games,
certainly against the elite games, and squander those leads in
the second half. So here's a number that I think
is adds to my confusion, Max, and that is that
(02:40):
the Steelers and Rams are the only two defenses with
thirty or more sacks and twenty or more takeaways. Now,
if you have thirty or more sacks and twenty or
more takeaways and you're one of only two teams in
that category, you would expect, you know, something like what.
The Rams are twelve in the league and yards per game,
(03:01):
second in points per game allowed seventeen point five, So
they're pretty good at yards per game. They're elite at
points per game, which you would expect because they're sacking
quarterbacks and taking them all away. The Steelers, who have
more takeaways, by the way, are twentieth in points and
(03:22):
twenty eighth in yards.
Speaker 4 (03:24):
Now, how is that possible? How these numbers?
Speaker 2 (03:27):
Just?
Speaker 4 (03:28):
Max?
Speaker 3 (03:29):
This is the most perplexing season I can remember. You know,
people are gonna say, well, it just adds up to
them being a mediocre football team, which is which is true.
They're six and six. But I see these numbers and
I think, isn't they're more there? There seems like there's
more there, And I'm gonna say there's more there until
i'm conclusively it's conclusively proven to me that there's not
(03:50):
more there. But I that's that just it blows my mind. Max,
I don't understand it.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
Well, I think.
Speaker 5 (03:56):
I think that's that's where you get to the conundrum of.
Speaker 2 (04:01):
This team is average, like you said.
Speaker 4 (04:04):
But they shouldn't be with those numbers, right.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
You should you should not be. But we've seen it
time and time again.
Speaker 5 (04:10):
Right where the offense is stalled, it can't generate the
you know, the opportunities and the splash plays to be
to take advantage of that elite status like the like
like the La Rams, because you have to be able
to convert those into points and also generate some of
(04:35):
that for yourself. There's a reason why there's about one
hundred and fifty seven ish play discrepancy this season and
plays by defense versus offense.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
No, we also have.
Speaker 5 (04:51):
The the the only the the most or actually the
most of the least. We have the least amount of
play ran offensively in the entire NFL. So think about that.
We are thirty second offensively in the NFL and snaps ran,
(05:11):
which like six hundred and fifty seven, and for the defense,
you're sitting at around eight hundred and twenty, which is
the most plays in the NFL. So that's that's how
wide we are, most in one least in the other.
(05:35):
And that is where when you average it out, you
get average. Right, if you're setting both border walls for
the most in the least, you fall in the middle,
in the middle of the average.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
Right.
Speaker 5 (05:52):
If we were going by grade scores, let's face it,
you know, if you have a fifty, that's it.
Speaker 2 (06:00):
This is a non passing grade.
Speaker 5 (06:03):
Steelers are at least got the extra credit and got
that in place so that when it does happen, they
are better.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
Equipped to deal with things.
Speaker 5 (06:13):
But they're not right now, they are They are not,
and that's where you're going to have to work.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
On stemming that tide.
Speaker 5 (06:20):
Being able to predict a little bit better means you
have to narrow that gap. You can't have the most
plays in the NFL on one side and then fresh
on the other because you haven't played that much. And
it's also, you know, not fair to to those guys, right.
You want to give your buddy a break, and you
(06:40):
want you you want to chip in however you can
and really honestly chip away at the at the total
play discrepancy that's currently happening in Pittsburgh.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
Yeah, I just I don't, and I understand exactly what
you're saying, because then numbers that indicate you should be
elite or counterbalanced by the numbers that say you shouldn't be.
And that's the and that. But again, when I think
of Steelers defenses that have been successful, these are the
(07:17):
kind of numbers they have, right, thirty or more sacks twenty,
but they probably have more sacks than that. But thirty
or more sacks twenty or more takeaways, you know, elite
in those categories, and a six and sacks something like
that second in takeaways. But up there among the league leaders,
it shouldn't it shouldn't equate to this. Just like you know,
(07:38):
if you lead four games at half against four elite
teams and you're getting the ball to begin the second half,
it doesn't add up to four losses in those games,
you know, except when you point out the fact, you know,
and obviously you could point out the look the Yearlers
are averaging two point eight points per game in the
third quarter, that's one of the worst in the league.
They have a massive point differential in the fourth quarter,
(08:02):
a massive points allowed in the fourth quarter. I think
things just begin to get rolling. They seem to get
away from the team or have a couple of times,
and so you wind up with this record. All I'm
saying is, you know and I and it's not I'm
not trying to cherry pick numbers per se, because that's
what the students' identity is supposed to be, and that
(08:24):
identity usually adds up to something more than what we've
seen here, more than the whole of you know, the
sum of the parts. Here's the hole, and that this
hole doesn't add up. And that's why I'm that's why
I continue to be perplexed. You know, if you told somebody, hey,
at this point of the season, Max, you're gonna be
number two in the league in takeaways with more than twenty.
(08:45):
You're gonna be, you know, certainly in the top ten
in sacks, and you're gonna be leading for elite teams
in the fourth quarter and getting the ball to begin
the second half. I'm wondering how big of a division
lead I've got those are real numbers. I know the
other numbers are real too, But I guess that's why
I just keep holding out hope that somehow this is
(09:09):
gonna come together down the stretch here and we're going
to see more consistent winning football.
Speaker 5 (09:16):
Well, and that's the biggest thing, is when do we
get the consistency? Because we know that in one off
situations or short exposure moments, this team can be elite.
Right we saw we saw them go toe to toe
with the Patriots, saw them go toe to toe with
the Colts and come out the other side victorious. But
(09:39):
it's when those lull times are when the expectations are
set a little bit higher than you know than just
going out there and showing up and and this and
this is on your side, this is what you have,
this in front of you. If you get this, just
this game, good things are going to follow. And it
(10:01):
doesn't because they don't. They don't handle that business. And
I think that's where you know, the frustration is because,
like you said, people believe.
Speaker 2 (10:14):
And hope.
Speaker 5 (10:16):
That this year, that that that this team gets it together.
And I hope so too, Jussell. You hope the same
thing because when you look at it on paper. When
you've been at training camp every single day like we have,
you know, we know what the bright spots look like
for this team, but you know that they're just a
(10:38):
team that has not gotten all on the same page yet.
It has been very self centered, and they have they
have to figure out a way king to.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
Put some of the ego stuff aside.
Speaker 5 (10:57):
And bring and embrace the interconnectedness of being teammates, of
fighting for each other, of doing it for the person
to you're left, in your right doing it for the
guys in your huddle because that because that's exactly what
they would do for you, right. I think that's where
(11:20):
I struggle with it, because this team still has some
team building and bonding to do.
Speaker 2 (11:33):
It was put together.
Speaker 5 (11:36):
Very nicely, and you were able to get some guys
that we probably didn't think we would get, and that
was a hurry up of a maturation for.
Speaker 2 (11:49):
A lot of things.
Speaker 5 (11:50):
But it takes time to get to know each other.
It takes time to really become in tune teammates with
each other, and you're asking guys to do it in
a relatively short time in training camp. Then you get
right into the season during and it's just boom boom
boom boom boom, back to back to back to back
(12:12):
week week week week week, you know, hurry up, slow down,
tie this lace, double knot this one. There's so many
different nuances about where they can be, where they what
they can do.
Speaker 2 (12:28):
And so I'm hoping, and this is my hope that.
Speaker 5 (12:33):
The consistently inconsistent phrase I used yesterday, I'm hoping that
we could start to wipe off the end and get
consistency is the key is the currency and key, and.
Speaker 2 (12:52):
I think we can do that.
Speaker 5 (12:53):
I think there is, but you have to make a
decisioned down to the man. That's what it comes down to.
It comes down to the cell Fliss act of putting
thineself to the wayside and joining the collective, joining the
group and saying we are going to meet the difference makers.
We are going to be the reason why. I'm not
(13:16):
saying I'm finding my why, but I'm finding my team why.
I'm finding what can we do and I'm searching for
solutions instead of just putting the finger and blaming somebody else.
Speaker 2 (13:30):
Max.
Speaker 3 (13:31):
Before we get to Jerry Dulac here, have you been
on a team like that? Have you been on a
team that needs some kind of reckoning like that, and
have you seen that be successful?
Speaker 6 (13:42):
Yeah, I mean I I've been I've been on Steeler squad,
and you know, we had to have that brother to
brother talky, you know, and Joey Porter led that, and.
Speaker 5 (13:55):
You know, and I think it's kind of I think
a lot of people wanted to make it similar to
that versus the Jalen Ramsey speach, like the night before
a game or him talking to the guys. Joey's wasn't
like that, per se. Let's just let's just put it
that way. Like when Joey called a meeting, we didn't
(14:17):
know what it was for. We just knew we had
to be there. And that's that's a pretty cool thing
to have have done, you know, for the wherewithal kick
the coaches out or let the coaches finish their traditional
meeting and he said, hey, nothing against you guys, We're
(14:39):
staying here. We got this stuff to talk about. Will
be out you know, the minute or whatever. And I
just remembered how open, how talkative, how jee rush Jievid.
I just know that it's it's something that can be beneficial.
(15:01):
Let's just put it that way. It can be beneficial.
If the right minds are on top of this that
that's the way.
Speaker 2 (15:08):
I'll put it. I'll put it like that, King, Okay.
Speaker 5 (15:10):
If the right minds are on top of it, it
can be accomplished.
Speaker 3 (15:16):
Well, let's hope they can do that, Max, because they're
running out of time obviously, and you know, we want
to see them, you know, figure this thing out right,
figure out how these pieces because here's the other thing too.
You know, I've talked about some of these positives, but
you can you can fit together some of the negatives too.
(15:39):
There's a reason that you have some positives in your
six and six and they see this, have lost five
of their last seven games. They are in need of
putting those positive pieces together, eliminating those negative pieces. But
if the negative pieces, you know, if the positive pieces,
I want the negative pieces.
Speaker 4 (15:55):
To go away and the positive pieces to remain.
Speaker 3 (15:58):
But it's possible the positive pieces could go away and
the negative can remain. So got to the Steelers are
battling against trying to find some consistency down the stretch.
First place in the AFC North on the Line on

Well, that wonderful sound can only mean one thing, right,
and that is our buddy. Uh, Jerry Doulac is with us.
So Jerry Dulac is brought in part. He's he's the
guy so big that he has to be introduced twice.
I'm gonna do the first one here, Cool Breeze aka Dulac,
(17:22):
presented by your neighborhood Fortune of The F one fifty
is the official truck of the Pittsburgh Steelers. I will
let Max do the honors of of sponsor. Number two
is our only guy that gets too sponsored.
Speaker 5 (17:34):
Yeah, exactly, And of course Jerry Dulac is also brought
to you by Palmadoro in Wexford three dollars bud Light
sixteen ounce drafts for all Steeler games. That's right, Jerry
has you cover. He can get you to the game
and then he can hopefully you know you have fun.
You have to find your own way back though, if
you if you enjoy those those Palmadoro specials.
Speaker 2 (17:57):
How we do it today, Jerry.
Speaker 7 (18:00):
Fail as, I am a terrific I would prefer to
be where Max is in the in the warmer weather,
but I'll take what I got.
Speaker 4 (18:10):
Hey do. A couple of notable things going on this week.
Speaker 3 (18:15):
First of all, you know, uh A a tough but
I thought you know fair number of questions asked to
Mike Tomlin about the reaction to the crowd and and
his response to that. The Steelers have responded by making
a couple of roster moves, by adding Adam Feeling by
moving to Sante Samuel to the to the active roster
(18:38):
full time. What do you make of what has been
something of a of a tumultuous week, Jerry, frankly, after
the loss of the bills, you.
Speaker 7 (18:47):
Know, Rob I predicted you might use that word tumultuous
and tumultuous, and you did so, so props to you.
Speaker 4 (18:55):
And a gold star for you.
Speaker 7 (18:56):
J Let's go back. I thought Mike Tomlin, in his
own way, was defly crafty on the way he responded
Tuesday to another question about the fire. Tomlin chance probably
(19:16):
was a good way to kind of quote diffuse the situation,
if you will. As for a Sante Samuel, Once he played,
and of course that meant he was deemed healthy to play,
the Steelers didn't want to keep him on the practice
squad because they didn't want some other team coming to
(19:37):
him and trying to poach him off the practice squad.
Now he has the ability and the right to say no,
I don't want to go there, and then of course
try and reach some agreement with the Steelers, and the
Steelers didn't want that to happen. So once he was
deemed healthy to play, which I was told last week,
he is ready to go, they thought, you know what,
(19:57):
then let's put him on the fifty three man roster.
No sense elevating him and leaving him out there just
to be tempted perhaps by another offer. So that was
it that had been in the works anyhow, you know,
when they signed him Fellas to the practice squad, it
was done so with the knowledge that he wasn't ready
to play, but he could be in some amount of time.
(20:18):
Well that time was last week and that's why they
did that. And as for it, and of course we
saw what has been going on with Darius Slay effectively
hasn't played the past two games, and so he was going,
you know, he was not going to be used anymore.
And so it was you know, they're probably doing him
(20:38):
a favor by waiving him and letting him sign with
another team who might use him. And asked for Adam Feelen,
you know, no harm, no foul. I didn't have a
problem with it. Here's a guy who knows how to
get open. I also understand he's a guy who's thirty
five years old. He's two years removed from a one
(20:59):
hundred yard catch season. Is he going to come in
and be the panacea? And the answer, I doubt it.
I don't even know how much you'll play because, let's
face it, Fellas, we've seen a reluctance on the part
of Arthur Smith when he gets new guys. Going back
to Mike Williams last year. He Arthur Smith is in
(21:19):
no hurry to get a MVS off to practice squad
Marquez Velde scantling. That was apparent when they signed Adam Thielen,
and so I don't know how much he's going to
be used. I don't know how much he's going to
assimilate into the offense in one week, but I have
to I don't think I would be shocked if he
(21:39):
comes in and plays anything more than ten snaps eight snaps,
To be honest.
Speaker 5 (21:47):
I think that's a fair assessment. I mean, you know,
we're still trying to figure out where a Sante Samuel Jr.
Is in the health process right right, No, So it
took him a while to get things going. I think
for Adam Thielan, the same thing can be said is
where's he at health wise? Where's he at in shape wise?
How can you expect to put him out there and
(22:08):
take you know, an entire playbook that took an offseason
and training camp for most guys to get to get
a hold of that were new. But I do believe
you can structure packages for him and what he needs,
because at the end of the route tree is a
route tree. Right, Jerry, there's you know, there's only so
many different ways to run a five yard out or
(22:28):
whether it's a choice routeness an end or or it's
it's a stick and go right. You know, there there's
some easy parts to it, but getting the entire thing done,
I think you're right, it's going to be tough to
have that expectation on a guy, no matter what his
experience level is. There's still a newness with teammates, quarterback chemistry,
a lot of things go into that process. What what
(22:52):
I thought was very interesting, you know, obviously before we
got to everything this week.
Speaker 2 (23:01):
Was how what was how kind of.
Speaker 5 (23:07):
Intuned and alert Mike Tomlin was in that press conference, right,
he understands that, you know, minor annoyances can't annoy you.
Right now, it's a very sensitive zone. And I know
that every type of conspiracy theory has has has has
been circulated.
Speaker 2 (23:26):
Jerry. I mean you could you could.
Speaker 5 (23:29):
Look from the front of the Post Gazette to probably
the front of many other newspapers and you know there's
there's there's been a lot of vitriol throwing towards the
Steelers because of the performance on Sunday, But here's my thing, Jerry,
And I'm trying to remember the last time, you know,
(23:51):
Steelers were in this type of similar situation and people
wanted to pour dirt on him. What what is the
intrigue with pouring dirt on the Steelers? You know, finding
all these different things like what what does that?
Speaker 2 (24:07):
Does? That?
Speaker 5 (24:07):
That just go to show you just how popular the
brand is nationally, that any headline that comes out of
Pittsburgh has to be put in a prominent national spotlight.
Speaker 7 (24:20):
You know, Max. And it's not just during the season,
as you well know and we have seen, it's during
the off season. I would venture to say over the
past three off seasons the Steelers lead the league in
national attention for whatever reason. I mean for a number
of reasons, but I mean for all the different reasons
that have transpired, and so part of it, a large
(24:43):
part of it is their brand, uh, their history. It's
why they're on national TV five times primetime five times
every year because they move the needle, and there there
is this great awareness intrigue following that exists. And we're
not talking about the fan base with the Steelers, uh,
(25:06):
nationally and so when they go through this spell like now,
five of the last seven, they're six and six. And
you know, we all know about tomlins uh Non losing seasons,
which is very much in jeopardy. And and and of
course everything is is exacerbated because of the Internet, because
(25:27):
of social media, and so all the wolves come out
then and everybody who thinks they have a voice takes
a voice, and and then people start piling on, and
then one person responds to another. And and in many
instances we're talking about quote credible people, people who have
some amount of professional cred to at least say something
(25:51):
that people think is halfway intelligent, and that only makes
the problem worse. But but the the you know, Mikes
the longest tenured coach with one team in the league,
and you know, when they get down, it's it's, I
don't want to say people want to kick them, but
(26:12):
they certainly jump on them. And it's I don't want
to call it a fascinating phenomenon, but but the attention
that is heaped on the Steelers, and that follows them
throughout the season and throughout the off season, you know,
it continues, not not to baffle me, but it certainly
(26:33):
surprises me to a degree. How much of that exists
twelve months out of the year.
Speaker 3 (26:40):
Uh So, Jerry, I want to circle back to Sante
Samuel because to me, he's a He's an interesting guy
in a number of different ways. For one, you know,
the students went in I think convinced that Darius Lya
in another year left in him.
Speaker 4 (26:57):
He started all year last year for Philadelphia had.
Speaker 3 (26:59):
A Super Bowl champion, that that combination of Porter, Sleigh
and Ramsey was going to be a shutdown trio of corners.
And you look up now and Ramsey's playing safety. Sleigh
has been released. Porter's the only one of the three
you know. And Sante Samuel he's not the biggest guy,
(27:20):
but he was a coveted free agent prior to needing
neck surgery. And now you have Ecchos in the slot.
So a couple things won. I'm intrigued just by Samuel
alone because I think if he were a free agent
and he were healthy, the asking price would be high.
So it's interesting that they get a chance to get
a first look at him, and and who knows, maybe
to turn out well. But the other thing is with
(27:41):
a physical running back like Derrick Henry, you know he's
gonna get his first taste of this sort of attack
from the Ravens, which I expect to be ground heavy
on Sunday.
Speaker 2 (27:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (27:55):
Well, I don't think there's any question about that, especially
what we saw the last two games done in Baltimore.
We all know what happened there five hundred and nineteen
yards rushing. So I don't think the Ravens are going
to change until the Steelers show that they can stop it.
But Sante Samuel to you to your question, Rob, yes,
would would have been a highly coveted free agent had
he not been injured way back in Week four last year.
(28:18):
And then of course there were questions you know, about
his about his injury, and then it was it wasn't
until April that he had the spinal fusion fusion surgery
by doctor David Conqloda, Steelers neuro surgeon, And of course
because of that they were able to follow his progress
and so they had the best line on where he
(28:41):
was physically, and so when they had the opportunity to
add him to the practice squad as they saw he
was getting healthy and getting close to being able to play, well,
that was that just put them in a good spot. So,
I mean, this guy's an accomplished player. He's obviously what
this is his fifth year leg and it's not a
(29:03):
fourth year in the league. And it's not Darius Slay,
who's age thirty four Darius Slay. Darius Slay played Taro
Austin had him in Detroit, and so you know their
they're fascination with Darius Slay. I mean, I get it
with the old Darius Slay, but he's thirty four and
at thirty four, you can't run with receivers like you
(29:24):
did when you were twenty eight or even maybe thirty.
And so we saw the issues he was having. They
certainly saw it, and that's why his playing time diminished.
And then when James Pierre started playing and playing well,
you know, he took over that role. So that whole
(29:45):
plan robbed. Your initial point about bringing those three guys
that are bringing two guys in to pair with Joey Porter.
That's all gone. And I'll tell you what else we're
going to see. I'll tell you that what is the
second test? They're off season intention to become more physical,
to become bigger and more physical. Drafting Derek harmon Ya
(30:05):
black Jack Sawyer, a big outside linebacker. Signing Jalen Ramsey,
a physical, hard hitting, tough minded, kind of quote nasty cornerback.
Those moves were all made based on that playoff game.
And so now that gets put to the test. We
saw how the first test failed against the Cincinnati Bengals
(30:26):
with your cornerbacks who can quote run and cover with
anyone to use Mike Tomlins words, and so this is
going to be another big test. We saw obviously what
happened last week, you know against the Bills. Two hundred
and forty nine yards rushing. Not a good prelude to
go into Baltimore after what the Ravens did last year to.
Speaker 2 (30:45):
Me, yeah, and.
Speaker 5 (30:51):
This game, there's so much on the line here, jiir.
He kind of laid it out the history with this
in Lamar Jackson, right, Like Lamar, I know there was
a practice report out.
Speaker 2 (31:06):
I know if you saw that yesterday.
Speaker 5 (31:08):
This is the first time he's practiced on a Wednesday, like,
you know, in a very long time, because apparently Lamar
Jackson does it need to practice on Wednesdays. But this
week for the Steelers, he did. This week he made
sure that he was president accounted for. Do you think
there is a nervousness because of that history for the Steelers.
(31:29):
Do you think the Steelers have actually gotten in the
head of Lamar Jackson or with the Ravens, because no
matter how great it is, they do have certain issues
with us when it cut like you know, like most
division games, right or teams that you see twice a year,
there's a certain familiarity that you have to kind of throw,
(31:49):
You have to throw the conventional methods out the window.
Do you think that's the case here with the way
that this game has gone. I mean, heck, since I
since I played, obviously before I played, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (32:01):
Yeah, I don't.
Speaker 7 (32:03):
Know Max if it does. But I certainly wouldn't be
surprised if that's the case. And all to your point,
all you have to do is look at what the
Cincinnati Bengals did to him on Thanksgiving. Here's one of
the worst defenses in the league, and they did a
pretty good job against the Ravens. Obviously, they go into
Baltimore and beat them, and we know Lamar Jackson has
not had great performances against the Steelers. I don't know
(32:26):
if Lamar Jackson practicing on Wednesday is a byproduct of
playing the Steelers or just the fact that each week
he's getting healthier. And I don't know how much you
guys have been able to watch him. And I'm not
going to sit here and tell you I watch all
their game film. But he's not the same Lamar Jackson.
He doesn't play like the same Lamar Jackson. And the
other thing that surprised me certainly against the Bengals because
(32:49):
to me, he does not get He does now, but
he never has gotten the credit he deserves for being
a tremendous passer. The guy has touched, he has power.
There's not a throw he can't make. He's a seventy
percent completion guy. And yet when you saw him against
the Bengals, he was just misfiring on throws left and right.
(33:12):
And I don't know if that's a byproduct of still
being rusty or what the Bengals were doing, whatever it was,
he was missing a lot of throws that we typically
don't see him make, and he was missing him on
a regular basis. And that's what surprised me more than anything.
Doesn't run like he used to, only because I think
of coming off that injury. So he just hasn't been
(33:34):
the same threat, you know, the same Lamar Jackson that
we're accustomed to, and he certainly has never played well
against the Steelers for the most part, you know, the
rest of his career. He's a two time MVP against
the Steelers not so much. So you know, we'll see,
we'll see where he is on Sunday. But there's no question. Look,
(33:54):
it's a big game for both teams. Ravens are more
roll five of their last six at a five game
winning streak until they lost for the Bengals, and we
know the Steelers are going the other way. So we'll
kind of see, you know, can the Steelers help turn
this thing around? Yeah, they can be a big win
for them to go there in Baltimore, but you know
they have to go down there and prove it, so
that's for sure.
Speaker 3 (34:15):
Jerry, my friend. Always appreciate your insight. Thank you very
much for joining us. Looking forward to this one, man.
I mean, it's always it's always special, it's always fun.
It always gets our attention because it's Steelers Ravens. It's December,
you know, despite the fact that I was hoping the
Steelers will have a two game lead or three game lead,
I guess it's kind of what it's supposed to be
(34:37):
right first place in the AFC North on the line.
Speaker 7 (34:41):
Well, Rob, I agree with you. I always look forward
to the games in Baltimore for any number of reasons.
And you know, the Steelers don't like them, and the
Ravens don't like the Steelers. But as Max knows, it's there.
Whatever lines are drawn in terms of dislike, there's no
question underneath it. All problem not spoken is the respect
(35:02):
that they have for each franchise because it's based on winning,
winning division titles and winning Super Bowls.
Speaker 3 (35:10):
Jerry Dulac, Thanks Jerry. We will see you in a
little bit on the south side.
Speaker 7 (35:14):
All right, boys, Rob, I'll see you soon in Max.
I'll see it at the Ballyard.
Speaker 2 (35:19):
All right, see it at the Ballyard, Jerry.
Speaker 5 (35:21):
And once again, Jerry's brought to us by Palmadoro and Wexford.
Remember sixteen ounce bud lights. They're in all Steelers games. Uh,
make sure you make sure you make sure you go
down there and get that they're on special for three fifty.
Got to make sure we say that because he is
why he is the double the Hey, he's double gripped
up on sponsorships.
Speaker 3 (35:41):
Two Lakes due Loch. I don't think it really does that,
but it sounds like it. So we're gonna continue. Get
we got a great matchup. Cannot wait. AFC preview coming
up as well. You know this game obviously it's about
the AFC North, but you know, what does it mean
and any it doesn't mean anything in any other context.
Speaker 4 (36:00):
It'll be interesting.
Speaker 3 (36:00):
We'll get to that and we will continue to break
down the key matchups in this great rivalry game when
we continue in the Locker Room presented by our neighborhood
Ford Store and the Steelers Pro Shop on Steelers Nation Radio,
part of the Steelers Audio Network.
Speaker 1 (36:19):
This is in the Locker Room with King and Starks
on Steelers Nation Radio, presented by your neighborhood Ford Store.

the Pittsburgh Steelers and by Steelers Pro Shop. Get it
direct from the team at the Steelers Pro Shop at

Speaker 3 (36:41):
And thanks for being with us in the locker room.
Our thanks to Jerry Dulac for joining us moments ago.
You know, Max, it's such an intense rival and you know, yeah,
I think you were kind of alluding to something We've
talked about this a little bit, touched on it over
the over the course of this program, you know, since
we've been doing it together. You know, I think a
lot of fans want to see coaches yelling and screaming
(37:04):
and and getting in somebody's faces and getting them fired up.
And you know, I'm reminded of the Mike Tyson line
and everybody's got a plan until they get hit in
the face, right to get punched in the mouth.
Speaker 4 (37:16):
I think was actually the quote. But I think some
of that stuff.
Speaker 3 (37:20):
You know, motivation comes to different people in different ways,
and and everybody wants, you know, the the you know,
the sort of anger and stuff. And I love the
old videos of Joey Porter getting everybody fired up.
Speaker 4 (37:30):
I'm not I'm not discounting that. What I'm asking is.
Speaker 3 (37:36):
Sorry, sorry at what By the way, Aaron Smith described
him as the best teammate he's ever had. Uh So
that's that says a lot to me, you know. So
it's it's more than just you know, that kind of stuff.
It's like the meetings you talked about. When did in
a week like this, when did the jokes become a
little less funny? When are you kind of getting your
(37:58):
game face on because you you know, you don't want to,
as they say, peak too early. You don't want to
be burned out before you get to this game. I'm
sure it's got your attention, and I'm sure this year
is the way they've been playing has gotten their attention.
I don't know whether there's you know, extra film sessions.
Has been reports of different things, and again I don't
know what to believe or not believe, but you know,
(38:20):
I what is it? What is a week like this,
coming off the recent performances and going into a rivalry
game that is is clearly right now, the most important
game of the season, all these extra emotions. You know,
what are you kind of when are you honing this
to a finance?
Speaker 5 (38:41):
I mean you you have you have to, you have
to at least have everything buttoned up.
Speaker 2 (38:47):
I would say by you know, by Friday, because that
because that's what.
Speaker 5 (38:52):
Is going to be necessary, because there's a certain mental
capability you need.
Speaker 2 (38:56):
To be able to operate in.
Speaker 5 (39:00):
Right There's a certain level of not only just decorum,
but mental capacity that needs to be attained in this process.
And so I would say, you know, Friday is when
you want to have everything mentally ready and like you said, sharpened,
because this is this is a this is your biggest challenge,
(39:20):
and you don't want to you want to leave anything
for chance and leave that kind of Saturday to personally
get yourself.
Speaker 2 (39:31):
Lathered up or quote unquote ready mentally.
Speaker 5 (39:34):
You know, you start to start to get all the
extra sessions that you need, whether it's chiropractic or you know,
massage or whatever.
Speaker 2 (39:45):
Then you need to have you need to have that
locked in.
Speaker 5 (39:48):
You need to have that locked in, and everything needs
to be ready to rock and roll by that time.
I feel personally, if you have it around, then then
you should be you should be ready to deal with
with the with the challenge of what.
Speaker 2 (40:04):
What this what what this game is going to mean
to everybody else?
Speaker 4 (40:10):
Is it different this week? Is there more?
Speaker 3 (40:13):
I mean, look, human beings or human beings. You don't
want to say any game is taken for granted. Is
the feeling, the mood, the whatever are the prep? Is
anything different this week?
Speaker 2 (40:28):
Yeah? Yeah?
Speaker 5 (40:29):
I mean I I think so. I think when you
have will you have a game of this type of magnitude?
I think you know how you progress, how you perceive,
how you.
Speaker 2 (40:49):
Ingest what what a.
Speaker 5 (40:51):
Season is going to bring. These are the games that
you kind of put as as yours as your little
stars on the schedule. Right if you're a guy that
checks the schedule ahead of time, this is the one
you check off and you say, you know what, whatever
it's going to be, it needs to be in that moment,
(41:11):
I need the best out of out of myself because
this game, this is one of the hallmark games that
really defines us as a unit, right, that defines us
as a team.
Speaker 2 (41:25):
This is the.
Speaker 5 (41:26):
One where when you see, uh, the history of this
game being played out, like, this is what you have
to be you you you have you have to be
the guy on the team that that's ready for this
game because this is this is the Marquee game. This
is the Marquee matchup. This is you know, the one
(41:48):
game at this time of year that says, you know what,
this is what it means to be a Steeler, to
play in this game, to play the Ravens two, be
in the AFC North. This is what it means to
be a Steeler because this game has been defined, i
(42:08):
would say for the better part of for all of
the twenty first century at least, right, you know, this
is this has been that game, and the rest of
the league has looked to this game. When you say
defining NFL football, you're saying, what's the closest thing that
gets you to college and nostalgia.
Speaker 2 (42:28):
What's the closest thing that gets you to a rivalry game?
It's this one.
Speaker 5 (42:33):
This is the one that separates the men from the boys.
This is the game where the physicality, the history, and
the gumption comes from this type of game. And this
is one that you know, we used to say this
was the gateway. This was the gateway game to the
(42:56):
playoffs if you wanted to get to the playoffs. Whoever
won this type of matchup and the two times that
we did that that you that you see each other.
That was a team that was gonna go and they
were gonna make a deep playoff push. That's what it
meant back when we played and I'll never forget oh eight, season,
oh nine, you know playoffs we ended up that was
(43:18):
that this these two teams were the AFC championship, right
I distinctly, so, I don't say it as like hyperbole
because it literally happened. It literally happened, and it came
down to that and the and the team that wonted
ended up you know, it was us winning a super
(43:38):
Bowl because of it, right, So you know, I could,
I could wax poetic about what this game means and
the fact that we don't like them, they don't like us,
and you know everything that goes with that, but that
was that that that's the reality, and we don't like them,
they don't like us, And you know what, I'm fine
(43:58):
with that.
Speaker 2 (43:59):
I am perfectly okay with the fact that.
Speaker 5 (44:02):
You know, I will never sit down and have dinner
with ray Lewis, ed Reid or Terrell Suggs, right, you know,
like that, that just I'm good with that. And if
and if and if I never have to see them again,
you know it won't. It won't be soon enough. It
won't be soon enough, you know. So I think that's
(44:23):
where I kind of I kind of say that I'm
okay with it. And I think that's where you have
to be one of the narratives that does bother about
the evolutions of this game at times. Now. Now, listen,
I get it, I have plenty of friends on other teams, right,
but I can honestly say I don't I don't have
any friends from the Ravens. You know what I'm saying, Like,
(44:44):
there's no like man my one. But man, I can't
believe remember that time we played against these No, I
don't have any of those guys on the Ravens. I
got former Bengals friends. They got former Brown's friends. I
have no former Ravens friends. I can tell you that
right now. Terrell Suggs is not in my role of
de and will never be in my role. He might be,
he might be on my on my punch list, but
(45:05):
that that's about it. Ray Lewis, you know what I'm saying,
His his kids went tomorrow. His kids, you know, lived
in Orlando. They and they even went to my rival
high school. And I'm not I'm not calling ray Lewis
up to say, Hey, what's up, ray how you been?
Speaker 2 (45:22):
How's life you doing good? How's that motivational speaking? Right? No,
I'm not asking ray Lewis that I don't. I don't
you know.
Speaker 5 (45:29):
And granted if he even knows who I am, uh
Ed now, I will say this, Ed Reid is a
cool dude.
Speaker 2 (45:36):
I do support Ed.
Speaker 5 (45:38):
You know when he went to Bethune Cookman and tried
to be the head coach. I supported that, but I
don't know ed personally like that, you know, but he's
not a friend of mine. But I was supportive of
him because I knew. I knew what type of person
he is, even though he went to Miami. And I
don't like Miami Hurricanes that that much either, but I
do have.
Speaker 2 (45:56):
Some Hurricane friends.
Speaker 5 (45:58):
But I think that's where, you know, this game has
kind of put us that, you know, we just don't
cross paths with a lot of those.
Speaker 2 (46:06):
Guys in life, you know.
Speaker 5 (46:10):
And and it's okay because you know what, not everybody
has to be your friend.
Speaker 2 (46:15):
This is a game.
Speaker 5 (46:15):
There's no friends come Sunday for the bottomore I don't
I don't care what college. I don't care if you'll
played in college together. You're not friends. Don't don't be nice.
I don't want to see you help a guy up.
I don't want to see you dap a guy up
pre or or during a game. Save Save that for
the day after, Save that for Monday. Don't let me
see it.
Speaker 2 (46:35):
How about that? Don't let me see it.
Speaker 3 (46:36):
I can't wait to see this game, and I can't
wait to be calling it with Max, who's obviously fired.
Speaker 2 (46:40):
Up.
Speaker 4 (46:40):
I'm liking it, Max, I love this.
Speaker 2 (46:43):
Uh yeah, I believe me, don't I don't like rat birds.
Speaker 4 (46:46):
They are fired up? Where do you believe me?
Speaker 3 (46:48):
