Jalen Warren, who gets the hand off left side, cuts
back to the right, now cuts back to the left again,
gets to the edge of.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
The forty, the thirty, the twenty the ten touchdown Jail
and Warren another forty.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Five yard touchdown from Pittsburgh Steelers score. Oh, Welcome to
the Locker Room, presented our neighborhood four store, the Steelers
Pro Shop on Steers Nation Radio, part of the Steelers
Audio Network. Thanks to Justin Miller for cranking EPSOM Christmas music.
Speaker 3 (00:54):
Joyful is that way? Well, let's see. Uh uh du
Come all you faithful, that's what it is.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
Yeah, come all you faithful, come, come to the locker
room and enjoy with us. A fun victory last night
for the Steelers in Detroit yesterday into the evening. It
was just, you know, a big win for the Steelers,
maybe their most complete win I think their most complete, winning,
best win of the season. It was, and I don't
(01:22):
think a lot of people had a lot of faith
that they could go in there and do what they did.
I thought that if they want, it was gonna be
low scoring. It turned out to be kind of in between.
It wasn't a high scoring Lion shootout. It wasn't a
low scoring game, Max. I just thought it was maybe
their most not not maybe let me let me rewind.
I thought it was their most complete game of the year.
Speaker 4 (01:44):
And you know what I would I would agree. I
think this was this was very, very close to a
full complete sixty minutes of of just Steeler football, right offensively, defensively,
special team wise, and I felt, like, you know, offensively
(02:04):
it was it was about as good as you could
have expected, right. I mean, to have the explosive plays
that they did, not one, not two, but three different
forty five yard touchdowns plays in this game is pretty phenomenal.
(02:24):
Two hundred and thirty plus rushing yards and versus fifteen
rushing yards, I mean, that's that's just I'm gonna be frank,
that's a hell of a stat as a hell of
a stat I mean, let's just be honest, let's just
call it what it is. That's that is fantastic numbers.
(02:46):
And we were treated to a wild finish and so
you're absolutely right. I mean, it was. It was everything
you could have wanted in more from a full games
worth of football.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
Okay, I suppose if I'm gonna you know, if I'm
trying to put myself in the shoes of some quibblers
while also pointing out what I think are some real
positives for the Steelers. So the Steelers beat the Colts
when the Colts were still the Colts, right, they were
(03:24):
seven and one, and they were, you know, the top
team in the AFC. And the Steelers were up twenty
seven to twenty with after they kicked a field goal
with under seven minutes left in that game, so they
were dominating.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
Now.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
The Colts came back, scored a quick touchdown and then
kicked the field goal late to give themselves a chance
to recover the on side kick and make a game
of it. The Steelers had, you know, a nice lead
on the Ravens. The Ravens came back closer in that game.
They had a big lead on the Vikings in Dublin
yesterday against the Lions. You know, it was the Lions
(04:03):
who who clawed back into this game when the Steelers,
you know, up twenty nine to seventeen. I think the
positive for me out of that, so people can say, well,
the next thing they have to do is finish, and
Cam Cam Hayward kind of said that last night. Hey,
we played three good quarters of football. But the fact
to me, and one of the things I said to
you before we went our separate ways last night, Max,
(04:25):
you flying back to Arizona, me flying here by the way,
I hope your flight went well. I'll ask you that
in a moment. But the last one of the last
things I said to you was I can't wait to
see the power ratings this week because the Steelers have
they've not only beaten some quality teams, but they've they've
(04:45):
you know, had the upper hand in a considerable fashion
and some late scores have made it look close. And
I was more than that last night. Obviously, there's a
bunch of controversial calls at the end. I thought there's
a bunch of controversial calls throughout the game. But the
fact that the Steelers at their best can take it
to these teams and we're seeing now, you know, over
the last few weeks what we didn't see in earlier
(05:08):
games against Seattle, against the Bills, against the Packers, against
the Bears, and that is the ability to you know,
come out and play a strong third quarter and really
maintain the upperhand. Because remember in all four of those
games I just listed this, Yeers had the lead at
halftime and got the ball to begin the second half.
Or the last three weeks during this three game winning streak,
(05:30):
those are distant memories, those third quarter woes, and I
think that that's you know, I really cannot wait to
see the power rankings. That was the last thing I said, Max,
I can't wait to see the power rankings this week
because I'm really interested to see how this deelers are
perceived around the NFL.
Speaker 4 (05:47):
Yeah, you completely, You completely did that, and you said that,
and I remember agreeing like wow, you know, and we
were like, okay, well, will we get in the top ten?
Will we crack? Then? Finally, with this performance and the
way that we played with the last two weeks, that's
gonna be the question. But I will say, you're absolutely right,
(06:08):
this is this is now not an accident, this is
a habit, right, this is three games in a row,
two of which you had stellar run defense. You know,
obviously the Baltimore game was one you still kind of
gave up yardage, but they were inconsequential yard inconsequential yards
(06:29):
against the Ravens. But when you need it, especially against
the Dolphins team that was tenacious and averaging almost two
hundred yards, you shut that game down. And then now
the NFL's number one offense.
Speaker 3 (06:46):
Yeah, like you.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
Said, a top rushing attack, you went toe to toe
with the NFL's number one passing offense. And that's that's
pretty phenomenal. But the fifteen opposing rushing yards for an
already thousand back and Jamier.
Speaker 5 (07:07):
Gibbs and a heck of a heck of a thunder
lightning combo and David Montgomery fifteen combined net rushing yards
is just that's a hammer.
Speaker 4 (07:21):
That is a hammer. And you know, all the credit
goes to everybody on the defense. Everybody on the defense
did something spectacular. For your defense to win that game,
they all had to do something spectacular and they did.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
Yep, they did.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
And you know, we started this with a clip from
jail And Warren, who now is a career high in
rushing yards. His previous high had been seven hundred and
eighty four back in twenty twenty three.
Speaker 3 (07:55):
He's at eight twenty eight.
Speaker 2 (07:56):
He is over one thousand yards from scrimmage on the season,
eleven twenty eight scrimmage yards. You know, the I think also,
you know, it's kudos to the line play on both sides.
And I agree Max with you wholeheartedly. I thought that,
you know, what the Steelers did again, you know, controlling
the clock, how important that is and and being able to,
(08:20):
you know, to to take it to this Lion's defense.
But on the other end, you know, part of the
part of the time of possession is them not having it.
And the Steelers dominated time of possession, second consecutive week
that they've that, they've pulled that off. And I didn't
they they ran. I think they run They ran one
(08:41):
more play than the Lions. So that's a second straight
week they've done that. They hadn't done that all season
until last week.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
But I agree with you.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
I think the defense, the defensive front, and I include that,
you know, the two outside linebackers, you know, Sawyer and
high Smith. You know, although we did see some other
guys coming in there, to spell them on occasion.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
But there was no cutback. There was no getting to
the edge.
Speaker 4 (09:10):
You know.
Speaker 2 (09:10):
The lions get to the edge in a couple of
different ways, right, They run sweeps designed to get to
the edge, and then they bounce it outside. And we
saw the bounce it outside against the Bills, and and
how huge that was with James Cook doing that again
and again and again against the Steelers, and that just
wasn't there, man, that was closed down. There was nowhere
(09:31):
to go forward, and there was nowhere to go sideways.
Speaker 4 (09:37):
It was it was. It was smothering, right, smothering. It was.
It was smothering. And and I resisted the urge to
make a make a food reference, uh in that.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
But where we where were we gonna go with?
Speaker 4 (09:52):
Oh? I was gonna say Denny style smother smother covered
and scattered, you know, I mean that's exactly what it was.
The hash Browns in order it that way, Or you
can go to waffle house and do the same thing.
I mean, you know, pick and choose. I mean, I
prefer less violence. I mean waffle House you have to
have you have to have, yeah, yeah, you have to
(10:12):
have at least a squabble, a squabble certificate. Uh to
go into a waffle house now, so uh, I prefer
Denny's anyways. No, but they were smothering. I mean Alex
high Smith, Alex high Smith, Alex high Smith, I mean
I felt like I had to put the emphasis on
(10:32):
that because he was phenomenal. He was everything you needed
him to be in the absence of TJ pressure at
the quarterback just dominated the backside, run blocks and getting
(10:54):
off his block and making the play, being the force
of the point on plays run his side, directing traffic
and getting people lined up in the right place. He
was all that. So kudos not only to the defense,
but to Aaron Rodgers. Not even gonna say aa Ron,
(11:18):
that's Aaron freaking Rogers at a nice day, processing, fueling
and feeding the players. So yeah, I mean, I know
that was a defensive question, but you know, the best
defense is a good offense, right, you know, one that
(11:41):
gets you off the field, one that gets you in
position to be strong for the next series. And him
in the offensive line and the pieces did just that,
and they allowed for that defense to hunt, and that
defense hunted early and often.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
So there's just so much to talk about before we
do that Max. How were the travels of Max Starks?
Was your plane on? Did you get First of all,
did you get your flight? It was a long game.
I had no idea what time it was, and you know,
it was such an exciting game that I wasn't wrapped
up and how long it took.
Speaker 3 (12:17):
But evidently it was a really long game.
Speaker 2 (12:20):
And I know you had a flight to get to
Did you make your flight? Did you get home safe? Well,
obviously you got home safe and sound, but did you
get home without any any further issues last night?
Speaker 4 (12:32):
I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna just say that.
Speaker 3 (12:36):
I made it home. I made it home.
Speaker 4 (12:37):
It was, it was. It was very interesting a flight.
Uh you know, I flew from Detroit to Saint Louis,
Saint Louis back here to Phoenix.
Speaker 3 (12:50):
And.
Speaker 4 (12:52):
Yeah, I was. I was a little late, a little
late getting in last night for delays.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
You know.
Speaker 4 (13:01):
The first flight had its own complications. I'm not gonna
yes get too far into that one, but it.
Speaker 3 (13:08):
Was Toye's left alone.
Speaker 4 (13:10):
But uh yeah, yeah, yeah, but so so yeah, but no,
but I mean and at the end of the day,
I know what I signed up for, and so that's
why you know, Hey, I am here present, locked and loaded.
Speaker 2 (13:24):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (13:24):
But yeah, it was definitely peeling my face off the
bed to get up the phone. Was definitely definitely one
of those in it. Yeah, it was just it was
just a long night.
Speaker 3 (13:36):
So we're gonna lay out what we have uh for
you today.
Speaker 2 (13:41):
Later on we're gonna be taking your phone calls as
we do on Mondays four one, one, three, one six.
We're going to talk about some of the heroes of
this game, and to me, there were a bunch of them.
And and let me just get this out of the
way and say this, twenty two consecutive non losing seasons.
(14:03):
And I understand, you know, the standard is a standard,
and they're not just after mediocrity and not just after
squeezing out winning seasons. But that is an incredible stretch.
It's the longest in NFL history. It was secured last night,
and it was secured while Mike Tomlin was earning his
two hundredth career victory regular season in playoffs combined.
Speaker 3 (14:25):
I didn't want that to get lost in the shuffle.
Speaker 2 (14:27):
It's not the most it's not the thing coming out
of this game that people are gonna be like, ah,
look at this, but I just wanted to mention it
because you know, I'm gonna use a double negative here
as a positive. It's not nothing, you know what I mean?
I mean, think about yeah, all the teams. You know,
every year that you get into the playoffs, you have hope, right,
(14:50):
at least you have hope. At least you're on a
journey of hope. And what did the Bills go almost
two decades without a winning season and without get into
the playoffs?
Speaker 3 (15:00):
I mean, is that what people want?
Speaker 4 (15:03):
You know?
Speaker 2 (15:03):
You you have a terrible record, but yeah, it's it's
time we tear this down to the studs and rebuild.
Speaker 3 (15:09):
Okay, well how often does that work?
Speaker 4 (15:10):
Right?
Speaker 2 (15:11):
And then that doesn't work? And now you're onto another
coach and another general manager and another five year plan.
And I understand this isn't the stated goal of the team,
right And I understand that, and I want to see
them get to the playoffs and win games too.
Speaker 3 (15:24):
I want to call a super Bowl with you, Max,
That's what I want to do.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
So I understand that from the fans, and I've been
here for every one of those seasons, so I just
think that it shouldn't be it's shrugged off by some
it's you know, use it in a pejorative sense by others.
Speaker 3 (15:41):
Yeah, twenty two.
Speaker 2 (15:43):
Winning, Yeah, yeah, it's it's an accomplishment, right, It's not
the accomplishment. The accomplishment's winning the super Bowl, but it's
an accomplishment. And I don't think it should just be
completely shrugged off.
Speaker 4 (15:56):
Yeah, And I think you're absolutely right to that. And
you know what, I want to call super Bowl with
you too. And I think you know, when you see
these type of performances, you breathe a little bit of
a sigh of relief, right You you start to open
(16:16):
up the belief category, right, you approach it cautiously. We're
not sitting here and saying, oh my gosh. You know,
we're not gonna be facetious and be like the true
Homers and just blind, you know, oh my god, and
everything is awesome. They're gonna they're gonna roll through. They're
not gonna lose another game until I don't know when
(16:39):
they're gonna be the new Kansas City. No, no, we're
not doing We're not doing that. But at the same time,
you have to recognize stellar performances and stellar leadership, stellar
(17:00):
personnel that gets along, that communicates, and that also wants
to go be physically manipulating the outcome of the game
towards your team. You want to have those guys that
will just follow and that will rally each other, that
(17:23):
will inspire each other, that will work together through all
the adversities of injuries, of everything else, injuries, change of positions,
to motions, promotions, you know, yelling at each other, but
at the end of the day, knowing that it's all
love because we're all on the same page. And it's
(17:46):
pretty phenomenal to watch when all of that does come together.
Speaker 2 (17:51):
And it looks like it's coming together in a good
way for this to There's still two more games to play.
The man O man not only their win in Detroit,
but the Patreots win against the Ravens last night. So
we're gonna be taking your phone calls a little bit
later on. We're gonna give you your AFC recap with
still one more game of importance to be played tonight
on Monday Night Football. A look at some of the
(18:12):
heroes and there were just a lot of them for
the Steelers yesterday. Where the Steelers are right now at
nine and six, are they poised to make a run
in the playoffs. We're gonna talk about that and much
more when we continue in the Locker Room presented by
our neighborhood Ford Store and the Steelers Pro Shop on
Steelers Nation Radio, a part of the Steelers Audio Network.
Speaker 1 (18:36):
This is in the Locker Room with King and Starks

Speaker 2 (18:55):
It's a snap line's bringing four Rogers back and is
gonna throw right deep again. A lot of contact downfield.
Did Gamewell catch fact?
Speaker 4 (19:04):
He did, Holy mackerel.
Speaker 2 (19:07):
He was laying down on the ground, soup Pine caught it,
picked it up, ran it into the end zone, and
now the officials.
Speaker 3 (19:14):
Are gathering at the five yard line. That you talk
about a Christmas miracle. He caught that patch.
Speaker 2 (19:23):
Catch, Wow, Holy mackerel.
Speaker 3 (19:28):
Pittsburgh Steelers touchdown.
Speaker 1 (19:30):
What off play?
Speaker 2 (19:35):
I don't think I have anything to add to that, Max,
I mean, I just you know, there were so many
plays where I'm picking my jab off the floor from
yesterday's game, and that was I think that was number
one on the list. That was our Steveters Drive you
the game presented by your neighborhood Forster. The F one
fifty is the official truck of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and
(19:56):
it was just an incredible catch and just and just
reset was going on there. You know, you're hoping that
the Steelers are going to find a way, you know,
to to maybe score some points, right you know, to
Slaw gets the touchdown reception from golf with a minute
fifty five left that ties.
Speaker 3 (20:16):
The game at ten. You know, you don't have that.
Speaker 2 (20:20):
You don't have that great feeling right at this at
this day, I beg your pardon that put the Lions up.
They were up ten to three, right, So you don't
have a great feeling. But you're thinking, okay, double score,
maybe go down, you kick a field goal, you make
it ten to six, maybe you come back and score
a touchdown.
Speaker 3 (20:37):
At the beginning of the drive, you're thinking touchdown.
Speaker 2 (20:38):
But then there were penalties and other things going on,
and then both teams are kind of playing the clock
game because the Lions at three time outs left. The
last thing you wanted to do is throw three in
complete passes punted away the Lions or their explosive offense.
They march down the field. You know, maybe they score
a touchdown before the half. Now it's seventeen to three
in a game in which you've outplayed them in the
(20:59):
first you don't want that. And so you know, you're,
you're all these things are conspiring to sort of think
field goal and hey, can we get at least some
points on the board. You know, uh, don't let them
score for sure, maybe we get some points on the board.
And then to have that play, I mean, Max, incredible,
(21:20):
absolutely incredible, and welcome back.
Speaker 3 (21:29):
In the locker room.
Speaker 2 (21:29):
You know, I think what happened there was justin Miller
just didn't like the way the conversation was going, and.
Speaker 4 (21:38):
He just wanted us to He just wanted to play
more of his his his holiday Christmas beds. He was
trying to figure out how to get an extra one
in there. You know, we have we have eight breaks,
he has he has ten of these songs.
Speaker 2 (21:51):
So I think I think you've hit upon it, Max,
But you know, we're just talking about the importance of
that drive before for the end of the half, and
just again just in case I don't remember what got
what was said and what wasn't. But if you remember,
the Lions had just scored, right, the Steelers were playing
(22:13):
out playing the Lions. They hadn't quite started dominating yet,
but they were dominating them defensively. You know, they're holding
them down. The Lions come up with a drive, they score.
It's ten to three at the half. You know, on
the positive side, you're thinking double score. On the negative side,
you're thinking, you can't go three and out because they've
got all their timeouts left. They could march down and
(22:34):
suddenly it's seventeen to three and the game's over. So
there's this cat and mouse game going on. Then the
Steelers have some penalties and at that point you're thinking, look,
let's just get three, let's make it ten to six,
maybe come out in the second half, go on a
touchdown drive, retake the lead. And so that's why this
is our drive of the game that we talked about,
because that played by game well, I mean degree of difficulty,
(22:58):
you know, all the judgment given that a ten point oh,
I mean, I just I still don't know how he
caught it. Incredible catch and incredible touchdow.
Speaker 4 (23:06):
Even as fickle as as ice skating judges might be,
I think the Russians probably still would have given it a.
Speaker 3 (23:10):
Ten point Oh that's exactly, you know, by the way.
Speaker 2 (23:15):
You know, every once in a while, I'll make it,
I'll make a statement that dates me. Like I remember
once we had a bunch of interns in the office
and I used a phrase drinking the kool Aid? And
then I looked at him and thought, do you guys
know where that comes from? And none of them did,
you know? Because because I'm older and I remember that
that was a big story when I was a kid.
Speaker 3 (23:35):
That was you know, Jim.
Speaker 2 (23:36):
Jones and yeah, all his father was drinking the kool
aid and poisoning themselves. And so this is when the
Russian judges, so back in the day, you know, during
the Olympics, you have all these judges and you know,
some American gymnast would turn in a sterling performance and
they'd be.
Speaker 3 (23:52):
Like nine point nine, nine point nine, and the.
Speaker 2 (23:55):
Russian judge, because of the cold warn everything was gonna
you know, seven point four.
Speaker 3 (24:00):
Like what do you the Russian judges come on, man,
you know.
Speaker 2 (24:03):
Because I'm sure you know, you're you're you're strong exactly
from our you know, you're thinking these people gonna go
back and be sent to the you know, salt mines
in Siberia if they.
Speaker 3 (24:12):
Give him a nine. You know, we don't know, right
we iron curtain and all that.
Speaker 4 (24:16):
Anyway, Yeah, Russian judges, Yeah exactly. I just I just
dated myself as well. So that's that's what you're telling me.
Speaker 2 (24:23):
I'm sure most of the people wanted to get that,
but still it's yeah, exactly exactly.
Speaker 3 (24:27):
You know, you're right.
Speaker 4 (24:28):
Every once in a while there's a couple of them
where you're just like, whoa, that's a year old. Now,
I'm like, yeah, you know what, whear it with pride,
Wear it with pride, right, right, Kinger, we wear it
with pride better than the alternative. Right. But but yeah,
but you're right. I mean that drive was such a
(24:48):
statement and then we kind of look back on it.
It's just a microcosm of what if we would have
known that was just a little a little teaser or
precursor to what we were gonna get at the end
of the game. Was that into the half type of
sequence and scenario I would have said pitch posh. Nothing
(25:08):
beats that, but I stand it correct. I stand correct
at Kinger, Yeah, stand corrected.
Speaker 2 (25:15):
Somebody made the observation and it was passed on to me.
Wild This end to a first half and second half
for the Steelers. Since that Super Bowl against the Cardinals,
you know, when you had James Harrison kicking off the
pass and running it down and then of course bend
to Santonio Holmes to win it, you know, the stakes
weren't quite as high obviously yesterday. But you know, there's
(25:37):
and I suppose we should point this out. There's a
couple of things. First of all, DK Metcalf was involved
in some sort of altercation around the sidelines. We're on
the radio, we were watching replays of it. We don't know.
I don't know what happened. I don't know what's going
to happen. So I'm gonna reserve any kind of statement
on that until the NFL issues its statement, because again
(25:59):
we're on so yeah, we're not hearing what's going on.
You know, we're seeing the replays. So I'm going to
reserve any kind of comment on that.
Speaker 3 (26:09):
Now.
Speaker 2 (26:09):
I was watching some shows this morning and they were
talking about the two plays at the end of the game,
and I was watching a show on ESPN, you know,
where they have coaches and former players, and the general
consensus was that the second play, the final play of
the game, was definitely offensive pass interference. The one before
was not, and they were hollering about that, and this
(26:31):
shouldn't have been called well because of when it happened. Max,
it's a huge call, but the Steelers had points taken
off on what I thought was an extremely dubious offensive
pass interference call on Darnell Washington. Of course they're not
attacking that because it didn't happen at the end of
(26:51):
the game. I still think and I haven't heard anybody
else's comments or opinions on that. I don't know. You know,
perhaps I'm wrong. Be the first to admit if I'm
wrong on that. But it seemed to me like Darnel
Washington was running a shallow cross. This wasn't an instance
where he ran out and pushed the guy into another
guy or anything. He was running across and the defender
ran into him. I I don't understand how that, But again,
(27:16):
and I will say this, at the end of the game,
the Lions pretty much said, Look, we didn't agree with
that first call, but that's not what cost us the game.
So so kudos to them for understanding that. Frankly, they
were just outplayed. The Steelers were the better team yesterday
for the majority of that game. You'd like to see
that last fifteen minutes. We saw it get away a
(27:37):
little bit in Minnesota in Dublin against the Minnesota Vikings.
Maybe gets a little way here. Some teams have crept
back into games. Whatever, the fact is the better team.
Speaker 3 (27:46):
Won the game.
Speaker 4 (27:48):
That You're absolutely right. I mean, the better team won
the game, and they outlasted I mean because that last drive,
especially the amount of penalties and the Tiki tech nature.
I still think they'll think that Zilster catch was and
not was incomplete. But right, I'm gonna that's the hell.
I'm prepared to die on that ball moved, that ball
(28:09):
was aided by the ground to secure the catch, and yeah,
I'm gonna stick with that.
Speaker 3 (28:15):
So how about the pass interference call on Dugger? Game's over?
Speaker 2 (28:18):
Yeah, and uh, the receiver I think it might have
been Williams comes up and starts making it where's the
flag notion? And then the two flags come in late
at the same time, here they come flying in and
like maybe it's late.
Speaker 4 (28:31):
I was like, come on, man.
Speaker 2 (28:33):
So maybe those officials are saying it take some time
to get that flag out and heave it that far
or whatever.
Speaker 3 (28:39):
It felt like a bought call. It was really close.
Speaker 2 (28:43):
And again, watching that show this morning, one of the
defenders former defenders, said, look, by the letter of the law,
that's probably past interference. But man, you know cause so
here's the thing. The same people that are gonna say,
let the players dictate the game.
Speaker 3 (28:58):
Okay, So I have two problems.
Speaker 1 (28:59):
Then.
Speaker 2 (29:00):
One, you didn't let Kyle Duggars play stand right, that's
the players. I mean, that was really good defense by
Kyle Duggar, really good defense. It was so you didn't
let that. You didn't let that go. And here's the
other thing too. If a player doesn't catch a ball
like like Zilstra, perhaps is that letting the players? You know,
(29:23):
if I take you as a defensive player, as you know,
you're a receiver, let's turn the tables. Now you're a receiver.
I'm a defender. I take you. Let's say Jalen Ramsey
took amah Ra Saint Brown and threw him to the ground.
Am I not supposed to call that?
Speaker 3 (29:39):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (29:39):
Is that the player letting the players win the g
can't you can't let the players dictate the game. I've
always loathed that expression. I understand it.
Speaker 3 (29:48):
I get it. If it's close, maybe you don't call it.
Dugger was close? You know?
Speaker 2 (29:55):
So I just think that, you know, that's a that's
a I don't like that. I don't like the logic
from which that statement comes, because that just means you're
inviting mayhem. You know, why not just let the offensive
lineman hold the guy. Well, you're letting the players decide
the game, Well, okay, then tackle Aiden Hutchinson. I mean,
(30:16):
you know, you have the game has to be officiated.
So this notion of I get it, if it's close,
maybe you let it go.
Speaker 3 (30:23):
But I don't know.
Speaker 2 (30:24):
I just think that. I just think I don't like that.
I've never liked that school of thinking. But regardless, Steelers
one man.
Speaker 4 (30:34):
Yeah, yeah, you're absolutely right. At the end of the day,
we got the result that was necessary exactly, and people
are like, oh, well it stole They did not steal
a victory. They went out there and they won it.
And as Steeler's victory Okay, there's anything you want to
say with the word steal, make sure you had the
errors at the end, because they they dominated and they
(30:58):
earned their victory. Donut Monday, they earned it and a
dominating how about how about if you want to say, oh,
the Lions got the game, how about not give up
four hundred and eighty one yards of offense?
Speaker 3 (31:10):
Exactly right, exactly right, I believe you.
Speaker 4 (31:13):
Give up three forty five yard touchdowns.
Speaker 3 (31:15):
First four hundred yard offensive game for the Steelers.
Speaker 2 (31:18):
They ran more plays, They outgained the Lions, They shut
down the running game, the better.
Speaker 6 (31:22):
Team position dominated time of possession. Man, there's so much
to like about this game. We haven't even dived into
the heroes of this game, because there were a bunch
of a max exactly just a just a great game,
a great victory for the Steelers.
Speaker 2 (31:39):
We're gonna get to more of that. We're gonna be
getting to your phone calls. We have to go around
the AFC with the AFC recap. What does the Steelers
win and the Ravens loss mean for the playoff picture
in general? We're gonna get to all that when we
continue in the locker room, presented by your Neighborhood Ford
storing the Steelers Pro Shop on Studish Nation Radio, a
part of the Steelers Audio Network.
Speaker 1 (32:03):
This is in the Locker Room with Kingon Starks on
Steelers Nation Radio, presented by your Neighborhood Forward Store. The

Steelers and by Steelers Pro Shop. Get it direct from
the team at the Steelers Pro Shop at Shop dot

Speaker 2 (32:25):
Well, the Steelers with a tremendous victory against the Detroit
Lions twenty nine to twenty four. I think a lot
of people did not think this was possible, you know.
Mike Tomwin said at the end of the game in
his postgame comments, the game's got to look a certain
way this time of year, and that would looked a
certain way, you know, the defense playing strong, the offense.
(32:46):
This goes back to what the Steelers the blueprint they're
trying to put together of being a physical team. Detroit
is among the most physical teams in the NFL, and
the Steelers out physical them. And Max to me, I
want to start where you started at the beginning of
the show and reiterate again. Cam Hayward, another Monster game
(33:08):
I thought last week was Cam's best game of the season.
He followed that up, I thought, with another just monster game.
In this one, Keanu Benton comes up with a sack
five and a half sacks for him on the season.
Derek Harmon comes back, it just feels like when he's
in the game, and I know he didn't play last
week against the Dolphins when they shut down eight chan
in that running game, just feels like when he's back,
(33:31):
the run defense is better. And then I really thought
Jack Sawyer did a great job of setting the edge.
And remember he's going against Penny Sewell, he's going against
the best right tackle in the NFL, you know, and
it's not like they were running around the right edge.
I thought Jack Seward did a great job. And as
he mentioned, I thought another guy who with a monster
(33:51):
game in addition to Hayward.
Speaker 3 (33:53):
Was Alex Heismith. So kudos to all those guys.
Speaker 2 (33:56):
If you're putting a gold star in the helmet, maybe
it's Smith and Hayward. But I just thought that front
five was just fantastic in this game.
Speaker 4 (34:07):
Uh. They they played phenomenal. They did they did everything
you could have hoped for, and they kept everything close
in the in this contest, and like I said, the
run defense was just immaculate when you're thinking about how
(34:27):
do you stop the number one offense? And I thought
this was the key. You had to pick one of
two right, And I said, if we could limit the
run game, we would we we would have a shot
at winning this game. And it's exactly how it played out.
(34:48):
I said. I said, you know, I'm a Ross Saint
Brown James Wood. They can have games, they can have plays,
and I was not expecting them to also shut them
down as much as they did for most of that game.
And Clif Raymond, of course, you know, had a little bit,
you know, he he he kind of went off a
little bit random insert uh tight end name, uh here,
(35:12):
that's not Sam Laporta.
Speaker 2 (35:14):
They had two catches combined, the three of them all year, exactly.
Speaker 4 (35:18):
All year, all year.
Speaker 2 (35:20):
I was a little slow in the uptake. Max Cheek said,
you got to read the scouting report. I said, what
scouting report?
Speaker 3 (35:27):
I was a little as usual. Max is a step
ahead of me, and I was like, oh, yeah, he's.
Speaker 2 (35:31):
Being facetious because they had two three of them catch
on this show.
Speaker 3 (35:35):
We said last week gone the tight ends are.
Speaker 4 (35:38):
Hey, that's that's the one thing we dont to worry about.
Speaker 3 (35:40):
The tight ends.
Speaker 4 (35:40):
I was like, oh, geez, what one guy's making place
tight ends?
Speaker 3 (35:44):
Right, but they had.
Speaker 2 (35:47):
Seven catches between them, the tight ends. But you know what, man,
so what go ahead, go ahead? If you stop stop
the room was key. Stop the room was key. And
I would have never known they would have done it
to the tune that they did. But it was the
key to the game was stopping their run.
Speaker 4 (36:06):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (36:07):
And then you know, I totally agree, totally totally agree
that puts them in bad passing situations. We saw the
students blitzing on the final play of the game. This
year has brought two and dropped nine. Yeah, the ability
to mix up what you're doing up front. And of
course they got home for three sacks. And there were
(36:28):
nine more quarterback hits, you know, two by high Smith,
one by well, I'm gonna get to him in a minute,
two by Benton, two by Hayward. So Hayward not only
comes up with a sack, two by Sawyer. So they
were you know, they were a bunch of near sacks.
But they you know, they they were getting to golf
and I thought they did a great job. I thought
a couple other guys, and again I don't want to
(36:50):
leave anybody out. You know, Patrick Queen, I think just
continues to play really good football. Peyton Wilson was a
dynamo on special teams. He had three special teams tackle.
Brunner had three assists on special team tackles. But I
thought two guys in the secondary in particular played great games.
And to me, Kyle Duggar I thought was fantastic. He
(37:12):
had a sack, a tackle, quarterback hit. And Joey Porter
great coverage and great tackling. I thought both from Joey
Porter Jr.
Speaker 4 (37:22):
In this game, You're absolutely right, And I completely concur
I thought, you know.
Speaker 3 (37:28):
Dougger and and and j P j.
Speaker 4 (37:31):
Were just phenomenal on that secondary side.
Speaker 3 (37:35):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (37:35):
Jalen Ramsey I gonna also, I'm gonna throw I'm gonna
throw kudos in for him too, because I thought, you know,
his ability to just trigger that that that that tackle
for loss early in that in the second half, like
well well no, it was yeah, early in the second half,
like the I mean kung fu grip, right, you know
(38:00):
what I'm saying, Like that was that was so phenomenal.
He triggered, he blew through the gap, and he just
absolutely held on till the reinforcements came. And once again,
you know, that's why you know the rules now. Granted,
you know, I was in the No Fun League era
where everything had to be uniform and everything I had
(38:20):
be tucked in. Your socks had to be all uniform
and everything. Oh blah blah blah blah blah. I'm so
appreciative that those rules are lacks now because that ate
it in that play, you know, the lack of tucking
your jersey in and having your undershirt exposed. Thank you,
Thank you for your lack of decorum because that at
(38:41):
Jalen Ramsey took full advantage and he was just in
on everything he was around. He distorted, he confused. I mean,
you know, he blitzed, He covered, I mean everything you
could have asked him to do. Jalen Ramsey has truly
been just phenomenal, especially since he switched to the safety position.
(39:01):
It's been just fantastic to see. And like you said,
the starting safety duos we had to start the season
are not the safety duo we have right now. So
once again, a tip of the cap to the front
office for identifying those guys and having them available on
the roster to be deployed to go get Kyle Duggar
(39:25):
from New England and have him insert because I can
guarantee you listen, New England's rolling. They're doing a great job.
But thank you for Kyle Duggar. Glad you guys didn't
need him, because we do and he's been He's been
nothing but a bright spot for us. You know, Brandon
(39:47):
Eckles up until the injury, was playing lights out as
well in that game. His coverage was tight, He made
some key plays that could have just broken wide open.
And if for him, even the tackle he got injured on,
I mean it was a huge play because if he
doesn't make that tackle, it's at least a fifteen yard
(40:09):
fifteen more yards from where he hit him. So you're right,
there was a lot of heroes. And like I said,
I mean we could pretty much name everybody on the
defense and say what they contributed to, right, I mean,
Hyya Black, how big was that? What was him dropping
it to coverage and batting down and passed that was
gonna be to a wide open, unknown tight end. Right,
(40:32):
Zilstraw was wide open on the seam in the end
zone and ya black with a big bear pause, no gloves,
no tape, just old school throwback, right, He's like, hey, hey,
my hands are good. My hands are good at that moment. So, yeah,
there was there was a lot of There was a
lot of heroes defensively, man, a lot.
Speaker 2 (40:51):
Of guys had their hand in the pile for sure.
And we haven't even talked about the offense, which was incredible.
You know, Aaron Rodgers throws for two sixty six the
running game runs for two sixty six. Uh, just you know,
I'm just looking at the final statistics here. You know,
(41:12):
I don't know why. I think one of those might
be wrong because it's tother's net took. I would say
it was two thirty for eighty three one, so I'll
get to the bottom. Yeah, but man, it was may
adjusted nets and there maybe. Yeah, I think there were
some some different things going on in there, but we'll
get to the bottom of it. Yeah, two hundred and
thirty net yards rushing in this game. Two hundred and
(41:33):
fifty one net yards passing in this game. You know
that included a couple of sacks, so to sixty six
for Aaron Rodgers in the air. Just a wonderful victory
over a team. You know that, Max I still thought
going into that game. I thought, and I think others
thought the same thing. This Lions team is still a
legitimate Super Bowl contender, but I don't know if they
(41:56):
are anymore because they're gonna have they need almost a
mirror to make the playoffs. This is a top flight
team that had to win. We've talked about how many
opponents the students have gotten. You know you're not getting, uh,
you're not getting somebody when their starting quarterback gets knocked
out of the game, and you know you're getting everybody's
best shot. That's what they've gotten all year long, everybody
(42:17):
at their most desperate, everybody at their healthiest.
Speaker 3 (42:20):
That's what it seems like.
Speaker 2 (42:21):
They got the Lions at they're at their most desperate
in their place and handed them a second consecutive defeat.
Speaker 3 (42:28):
By the way, you have to go back to twenty.
Speaker 2 (42:31):
Twenty two, the last time the Lions lost back to
back games, and the Steers hung that on them and
won that game. And uh, they got some help last night,
and just uh, what a win for the students. We're
gonna get to the help lasts that we're gonna get
to the AFC recap. We're gonna get to your phone
calls coming up in just a little bit at four
point two nine nine one three one six. A little
(42:53):
bit later on, we'll talk about the Browns, but too
much to enjoy about this one to start thinking about
the Browns just yet. We'll have all that still coming
your way when we continue. In the Locker Room presented
by you neighborhood Ford store, the Stewards Pro Shop on
Steelers's Nation Radio, a part of the Steelers Audio Network.
