Speaker 2 (00:28):
There we go, Optimis yay exactly. That was a Hong
Kong for a victory donut Monday right there. I don't
know if you could distinguish the honks yet kgar, but
that's that's what that was. I'll interpret for you.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
Thank you.

Speaker 4 (00:40):
Will you speak artemis prime? I'm sorry I got that
optimist prime, artimist foul optimist prime. You speak optimist prime
better than I do, considering get.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
Well, you know, it's just it's one of those things.
You know, there's certain linguistics that could be derived from
the sounds. I mean, how many dialects are there that
have clicks and noises and emphasis in different areas? You know,
I just you know, you just said I'm very worldly.
I'll just say that.

Speaker 4 (01:11):
You are indeed, so, Max. We talked about the receiving
Court of me, which was a plus. We talked about
Aaron Rodgers, which was a plus. And we can dive
into these things more one more big plus, just as
a unit that I wanted to point out and you
alluded to it. Special teams. Chris Boswell two for two

(01:31):
career long sixty yarder. You know, hey, here you go, Boz,
there's just a little over a minute left.

Speaker 3 (01:39):
You make it, we win, you miss it, we lose. Right,
just a.

Speaker 4 (01:43):
Career long for you on the road. Don't worry about it.
I've been raining on the field earlier today.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
No worries.

Speaker 4 (01:49):
And he just, to use a Pittsburgh pronunciation, ponded that thing.
He ponded it. I think it would have been good
from seventy man. It hit the netting. It hit the
netting right down the middle. So the incredible Chris Boswell
Cordless weightman, I think again, not to be forgotten. You know,

(02:10):
a net of forty two point eight, so cordless weightman
and the punt return or the punt defense team, right,
you know, he averaged forty one point nine net last year.
That was twelfth in the league. Forty two point eight yesterday.
Off to a good start already for cordless weightman. You
averaged twenty seven point five yards on six kickoff returns.

Speaker 3 (02:34):
That was an issue last year.

Speaker 4 (02:35):
That was better, And then you could complain about you
could say, well, the kick return coverage wasn't great, and
you'd be right. But as you said, Max, they pulled
out an eraser and scrubbed away all those thoughts about
what you didn't do by turning in the play of
the game Kenneth Gainwell with a strip, Ben Scaronic with

(02:55):
a recovery.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
It was a thing of beauty and special teams once
again were special. And when you talk about that unit
needing to make a splash, it's crazy how they just do.
I don't know where Danny Smith pulls these magical elements.
You know, I have no clue he is he is.

(03:20):
He is amazing at doing all of this, because when
I look at there was no real pun opportunities. And
normally you get the guy, you get the skill set
of a Miles killer Brew that jumps in in that moment,
right because Miles killer Brew is going to give you
a punt block, he's going to make some timely play,

(03:40):
or you're going to get a bas phenomenal play. But
to get a Ben's to get a Kenneth Gainwell strip
and a Ben's goroonic fumble recovery, and you can't you
can't predict this type of stuff, and it happens, and
it's always opportune and it kicks in and I'm just always,

(04:02):
you know, just so happy because Danny Smith is one
of those gurus. Man, he is an absolute special team's nut.

Speaker 3 (04:09):
Yep.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
He knows everything there is to know about special teams.
I mean, he's probably forgotten more specialties that we could
ever hope to amass in a knowledge base in our lives.
But the technique, the idea of talent, the schematics, and
then the execution, and I get it. You have to

(04:31):
have players that can execute these things. But at the
same time, it's a concert of willingness to want to
kick in and play special teams and to find guys
that not only have talent in the other two phases,
but have a pensiont or a want to to go

(04:52):
out there and do it by any means necessary in
that group. And that's what that feels like. Especially, it
feels like, you know, and once again, when I make
this analogy, I know it is not a direct correlation.
This is not more we play a game for a living,
all the respect and honor to our servicemen and women,

(05:13):
but it just reminds me of the ethos of the
Marine Corps, right, do more with less, and that's what
you're getting. You're getting You're getting outside of your kicker, punter,
and long snapper. You're getting guys that have to be multifaceted.
On that group. There's only three specialists in there, and

(05:35):
everybody else is a collection and eclectic collection of players
from other skilled groups and other sides of the ball.
When else are you going to line up a linebacker
and a wide receiver and a running back and a
safety together and they play in the same unit only
on special teams. And you got to make it work.

(05:58):
And that's what is so impressive about what Danny's able
to do to bring all those guys together, different skill sets,
different mindsets and get them focused on the same thing.
And those guys go out there and have a desire
to want to It's easy to tell a linebacker, go
hit the guy with the ball, right, It's easy to
go tell a safety go do that. But telling a

(06:20):
wide receiver or running back and a tight end, yeah,
I need to go blast somebody and make and make
a tackle. That's done. My job description right by the
wide receiver. My job is to catch the ball and
run after the ball. My job as a running back
find a hole and hit north and south with the
ball in my hands. Normally go block a guy, yes,

(06:44):
but to go make plays on the opposite side of
the ball of your skill set at times, or to
do something and protect instead of instead of attack. Those
mindsets are just always unique to I mean when you
get to the special teams aspect of it, and when
we talk about guys who have to be core for

(07:05):
that just gives me that type of etho. So a
tip of the cap and a nod to the Special teams.
Those two, of course are servicemen and women. And I
just I made that because that's one that you have
to kind of have that type of mindset and that
belief structure that you could do more with less. And
that's how special teams I look at it and and
and they're and they're a group that always astounds me.

(07:27):
And why we have some guys, Well, the good thing
is at least Miles killer Brew. You know, he did
go to army, so technically he understands that a lot
better than a lot of people, and that's why he's
their captain of the Special Teams. But I digress. It
was a great job in Special Teams.

Speaker 3 (07:40):
Yeah it was.

Speaker 4 (07:41):
And you know that was his strength last year and
it looks like it's going to be a strength again
this year. And you know, you can talk all you want.
You know, teams talk about that is a third phase. Uh,
But to Steerers live it, they practice it. I can't
speak for what other teams do, but I see the
attention to detail. I see, you know, Dandy Smith gets

(08:02):
periods to work on it, and then I just have
to look at yesterday, Max. I. You know that's the
difference in the game, right, Special teams. You know, you
can talk about, you know, all the things that happened. Sure,
and maybe it's an oversimplification to say special teams won
the game, but I'm going to go ahead and oversimplify
and say special teams won the game. Chris Boswell kicked

(08:25):
a sixty yard field goal and you got a turnover
on a kick return, a kickoff return, and that's why
you won the game. That's what helped you win the game.

Speaker 2 (08:37):
Yes, and accounted for what you just laid out. Those
two plays generated ten points. They generated ten points, ten
more points than you would have had had they not happened, right,
That's that's what it is, and the suddenness of it.
I talked about it being the double score opportunity without

(08:58):
the Jets, all of which was on fire almost the
entire day, did not get the ball in their hands.
You stole a possession from them, and you maintain possession
of the ball in a scoring opportunity. That's what that means,
and that's what that is, and that's what happened in
this ballgame because you just go down on a nice

(09:21):
long drive, you cap it off with a score, and
then on the very next play kickoff return team that
had been gashing us. Starting field position was for the
most part, I mean anywhere north of the thirty five
yard line for majority of the day, Like, there wasn't

(09:43):
really a lot of long field challenges for this team
to take on the Jets offense. And in that moment,
you turn it over. Now only do you turn it over,
you turn it over right at the doorstep of the
red zone, in the same area you just scored in
the previous play. And now you're getting the ball back

(10:03):
and Justin Fields has to sit there and watch. That
offense has to sit there and watch. Brice Allen, Breze
Hall and Braylan Allen have to sit there and watch.
Gary was gonna sit there and watch. And you've got
a hot team with a tired defense on the other
side having to run back out there. That's what that generated.
And then got to have it moment you're down on

(10:24):
kudos to the defense and listen, I'm gonna I'm gonna
say this. It was a rough day for the defense.
They had a lot of things to work on. A
lot of newness. You could see where the fatigue and
the game shape is not there. Not pointing any fingers,
but it's not there right now because you had a
lot of guys sitting didn't really get to see a
lot of play from a lot of your front line guys.
And I get that, that's okay. They're going to get

(10:46):
in shape. They're professionals, they're all pros players of the years.
They're going to be there. But what they did do
well two point conversion stops.

Speaker 4 (10:58):
Thank you, Max. It was the next thing I was
going to talk about. It was the next thing I
was going to talk about because so so to recap
for fans the Jets, And we saw this last night
in the in the game too, the the kick you know,
by the way I thought Folk made the kick.

Speaker 3 (11:15):
I didn't realize he missed the kick.

Speaker 4 (11:17):
Regardless, you know, you could add a chance to rekick it,
which is almost automatic because there's a penalty on this
steel that's on the extra point attempt in the first
half of the Jets, and they took the ball instead.
They took the ball half the distance from the two
to the one to try for two. And I don't
blame him for that decision, but they didn't get it.

(11:38):
And then what happens later in the game. Now, instead
of being up thirty three thirty one and that sort
of quote unquote automatic extra point puts you up by
a field goal. Now you go for two again because
you're chasing those extra points that you that you the
extra point singular that you didn't get earlier. And then
you fail again, and guess what, You kick a field

(12:01):
goal that doesn't tie the game at thirty four to
thirty two, but wins. It doesn't tie the game at
thirty four to thirty four, which it would have if
the Jets had kicked the two extra points. You win
it because they went for two and then chased after.

Speaker 2 (12:13):
It, exactly chasing points when you didn't necessarily need to.

Speaker 4 (12:18):
But I also I don't blame I don't blame Aaron
Glenn for that decision. Let me say that, I don't
blame him. No, No, they were running the ball that
it seemed like they could pick up two yards at will.
One should have you know, I'm sure that thinking we
can get one here and they didn't get it. I
don't blame them for that decision. I was sinking along
with him, but it didn't work. This year, there's outperformed
him in that very very very as it turned out,

(12:42):
as we just underscored very key moments of.

Speaker 2 (12:44):
The game, Yes, very key moments of the game. The
team stepped up. They bent, but they never they never broke,
and I think that was that was the differentiator. The
first drive of the game, turning them away and forcing
them to kick a field goal was another key moment
for this defense, and of course none bigger than the
last play of the game, where Jalen Ramsey absolutely steamrolled

(13:07):
Garrett Wilson and dislodge the ball from his hands. Because
that was a reception, that was a first down that
was gonna move the chains and effectively allow the Jets
to continue to move. And they have a very accurate
kicker on their side too, so I imagine they probably
would have tried a very similar role if they could
have gotten to midfield and given Nick folkan opportunity. But

(13:28):
they didn't, and that's what matters in this game. This
is a game of inches, this is a game of moments,
and the Steelers own those moments at the critical juncture.

Speaker 3 (13:37):
That's exactly right, that's exactly right.

Speaker 4 (13:39):
And how often you know people are First of all,
Mike Tomlin does that better than pretty much anybody in
the league. Win one score games. And look, we don't
want to see a team, you know, who want to
see a death struggle every time out there. I'm sure
the Steelers don't want to see a death struggle every
time out there, but they're perfectly comfortable with it. They

(14:00):
find ways to win. They expect to win those kind
of games. The record speaks for itself. Mostly. There are
things in sports that that don't that seem counterintuitive, but
the numbers just bear them out. One score games in
baseball usually lousy teams have the same record as good
teams in one score games are just things that are

(14:21):
gonna be. So if you're if you win a lot
of ones, you know, one run games in baseball, you're
probably gonna deviate back to the norm next year. You know,
you think you've got the secret sauce, you usually don't.
The Steelers under Mike Tomlin have the secret sauce.

Speaker 2 (14:36):
Mike.

Speaker 3 (14:37):
They know Max, they know how to win those games
under Mike Tomlin.

Speaker 2 (14:41):
They do. This team is conditioned to be in those moments,
to be steally in their reserve and their results. What
I did there?

Speaker 4 (14:51):
I dam Mike, You're you're running them. You're straight in
the mcbeam here. Very good.

Speaker 2 (14:58):
You know we're just running you know, the steal and narrow.
But anyways, I know we're gonna stop with the dad there. No,
we're not, because we're dad's we are dead. We're dad Yeah,
we are dads. This is what we do. So we're
just gonna live it and Just is gonna learn from
it when he becomes a dad. So we're good. But

(15:20):
this is why Mike Tomlin stresses hitting in football camp.
This is why he stresses putting teams in stressful situations
and forcing them to to perform. If you can get
a rain practice, you want that. If you can get
a hot muggy practice, you want that. If you can
get the Friday night lights practice in front of in
front of the crowd, you want that. You want to

(15:40):
make sure that guys the pads are popping more often
than not in a in a in a league where
a majority of teams don't do that. You want the
joint practices so that you can figure things out and
you can get guys in positions and teams will show
a little bit more in those moments than they will
in a preseason game. You want all of these opportunities.
You want to create and manifest them in a controlled environment.

(16:01):
He does that so that then when it does become real,
it does get tense, you do feel downtrodden, you can
rise up to the occasion. And that's exactly what we saw.
A team that did not flinch when they got dealt
body blows in this game. And when your defense, you know,
seemingly couldn't get couldn't couldn't stop the flow, you would

(16:21):
come back and you could answer. And we saw it
in opening drives right opening drive of the game. Jets
marched down the field, kick a field, go up three zip.
What's the Steelers do in kind response, We're gonna go
down the field and gets well, we're gonna put a
touchdown in the end zone. Ben Scarnic, Hello, thank you
need more of that? Yep, that's what you create. And
now it becomes the tennis match. Power shot after power

(16:44):
shot that was delivered and you're figuring out, man, we
got stymied, but they kept going, Okay, what do we
do to counteract this? And we saw it just go
back and forth? Seven was it seven or eight league
changes in this in this football game. That's the intensity
that was. Like the women's final, the men's final of

(17:04):
the US Open, Wimbledon, insert any significant tennis match, cup,
that's what you kind of saw. You saw it going
back and forth. And for us, we're just going left
and right with our heads right, We're just going back
and forth. Because each team was having those plays and
they were creating significant moments for themselves. Think about the

(17:25):
ability to stay in tune and follow the ball like
the team, like the team did when the ball ricochets
off of dk hits John Hu and falls back into
DK's lap or hip I should say it is hip.
It didn't fall directly into his lap hip and him

(17:46):
looking at the ball and knowing, hey, okay, hold on
to it, right. Those are the moments that you're just like, Wow,
this team is locked in and nobody flinched, nobody got up,
nobody got upset with themselves. You didn't see people storming off,
sitting by themselves like they did a year ago. Not
gonna mention any names. Was the wide receivers no longer
on this team. That has a star in his helmet now,
but I'm not gonna say his name. But those are

(18:08):
the moments where if you're not disciplined, if you're not
buying into what coach Tomlin was preaching and trying to
create just less than a month ago in La Trobe,
you would have missed that opportunity. This team did not
miss in those opportunities, and this is now a reinforcement
of that. This builds confidence. Was it perfect? Absolutely? Not

(18:29):
not going to sit here and try and try and
try and spoon you know, babyfood to you and tell
tell you this is five star wagoon. Not going to
do that. But what I will say is the some
of all the parts was something that was that that
left you with a very full and happy feeling because
you saw key moments come from key contributors at critical

(18:52):
at critical times in this game, and that was what
was special. All three phases kicked in and put their
hand in the palace that I will be counted. So
when we look at these highlights, we talk about these
these high points of the game, you would be remiss
not to mention those contributions from each of the different
three phases because they all mattered. And that, at the

(19:12):
end of the day, is why you say team and
why it's an acronym. Together, everyone achieves more.

Speaker 4 (19:20):
He's back starts. I'm Rob King. You're inside the locker room.
The Steelers defeat the Jets thirty four to thirty two.
They are one to zero on the season. The show
is brought to you by our neighborhood Ford Store, and
we will be back with more on the Steelers Audio Network.

Speaker 4 (20:03):
A happy birthday to Else Greenwood. Of course Else has
passed away. But you know we were talking about Alan
Fan because certainly I was earlier. How I was mystified
that he was not a first ballot Hall of Famer.
Glad to see him in. Still waiting for Else to
get in the Hall of Fame. So just a quick
rundown here. Elsee was part of the nineteen seventies All

(20:26):
Decade Team. He was a six time Pro Bowl and
a two time All Pro. He had plenty of competition
for that just on his own team. So as you
look at the nineteen seventies All Decade Team, Okay, so
we're going too deep on offense, and we're going too
deep on defense, and all twenty two in the too

(20:49):
deep All twenty two first team and second team are
in the Hall of Fame. From offense on the defense,
all eleven starters and eight of the eleven reserves. The
only ones not in the Hall of Fame are I think, No,
it's seven. I believe, I'm sorry, seven of the eleven reserves.

(21:11):
So forty four guys forty one or forty or forty
one of them are in the Hall of Fame. From
that forty from the all decade seamer in the Hall
of Fame. Okay, here's who's not in the Hall of Fame.
Dick Anderson find safety for the Dolphins. Lewis Wright for
the Denver Broncos. He was a cornerback and a good

(21:33):
player for sure. Harvey Martin, you know, four time All
Pro or four time Pro bowler, one time All Pro.
He is not in the Hall of Fame. And then
you have six time finalists, six time finalist else Greenwood
not in the Hall of Fame. Let's please get that
rectified and put else Greenwood where he belongs in the

(21:54):
Hall of Fame. There, Okay, let me clamber down off
my high horse and can hinue on inside the locker room.

Speaker 3 (22:02):
Max.

Speaker 4 (22:05):
So we talked about the good, just going to touch
on some of the things that you would like to see.
I would like to see improvement on twenty carries for
fifty three yards out of the running backs. Would like
to see that be obviously better if you're gonna only
run it twenty times. I'd like to see ninety yards
something like that. You know, four and a half yards carry,

(22:26):
So that's something that hopefully will be rectified again. You know,
some of these you have to remember who they're playing.
They're playing a you know, a very good front six
for the Jets. Quentin Williams is just he's one of
the best defensive tackles in the league. Harrison Phillips is
going to allow him the freedom to be a better
football player still, and Harrison Phillips is a good player

(22:47):
in his own right, both defensive ends. Will McDaniel, Will McDonald,
Will McDaniel, will McDonald.

Speaker 3 (22:55):
We're talking about it.

Speaker 4 (22:56):
Who is Will McDonough, the old the US deal reporter
that used to come on the NFL shows.

Speaker 3 (23:03):
He's a really good player.

Speaker 4 (23:04):
Ten and a half sacks, Not Will McDonough ten and
a half sacks a year ago. Jermaine Johnson, who you know,
basically missed last year, was an All Pro two years ago.
Quincy Williams, Quinnon's brother was an All Pro linebacker a
couple of years ago. Jamien Sherwood led the league in
solo tackles last year. So that is a good front

(23:24):
four or front six. That is a good front six.
And this is a team in the Jets. That is
going to be I think one of the best running
teams in the NFL this year. So the downs to
me was, you know, twenty carries for fifty three yards.
Want to see that be better. Jets ran the ball
for one hundred and eighty two yards four point seven
yards of carry. That's got to be better. The kick

(23:47):
return coverage could be a little bit tighter twenty nine
point four yards per return. I doubt Danny Smith is
going to be doing handsprings over that.

Speaker 2 (23:56):
You know.

Speaker 4 (23:56):
And injuries Harmon and Herbig happened before the game, but
Joey Porter junior to Shaun Elliott Malik Harrison happened during
the game. So that's going to be part of Mike
Tomlin's press conference tomorrow hopefully an update on those guys.
So those are the negatives as I saw it. Max
to the areas for improvement moving forward.

Speaker 2 (24:18):
Yeah, on the defensive side of the ball, that has
that has to change, and I believe it will change.
And this is a very prideful unit. There's a unit
that is not happy with those type of things, and
there's a unit that was so good a year ago
and you feel like they've improved but I think the
thing is you also need them to play together. A

(24:41):
lot of guys that I play in the preseason so
and a lot of new faces on that side of
the ball. But I will say this, I was happy
about the new additions kicking in and having a role
in all of all of this. I loved that when
de Shaun Elliott went down emerged at Chuck Clark. There's

(25:02):
the reason why you brought that guy in at the
beginning of training camp. You identified something and he kicked in.
Brandon Eccles, when Joey Porter Junior went down, stepped in,
kicked in and played in there. Jalen Ramsey, my goodness,
not enough to say about Jalen Ramsey. And you love
that the tenacity, you love the attitude, and he kept
it all contained to a degree. If you're gonna get

(25:25):
in trouble, get in trouble at the half when everybody's
trying to get to the locker room, right, and then
John Simpson coming up a little bit of an acting job.
But I can appreciate it. The head butt, right, I mean,
those are things that play within yourself. A team that
was trying to get under your skin and trying to
make it tough and jawjacking back and forth. You just

(25:48):
just write it into your polly pocket notebook, touck it
in your back pocket, save it for later. Oh yeah,
Garrett Wilson talking smack to me, noted. Okay, this guy
trying to show me up. Noted. And then you do
it all like Doc Holliday said, it's legal, right, you know,

(26:08):
flash the badge and tombstone. To let to let uh
to let Johnny know this is all legal. Let's do
let let's dance, Let's dance. I come for blood, and
Jalen Ramsey went and he drew blood on Garrett Wilson
at the most critical moment of the game. It was
not pretty, It was physical, it was grimy, but the

(26:31):
Steelers came out the other side of it, and you're
gonna need those wins. You're gonna need to be able
to come back and recall that moment of resiliency later
in the season because guess what, this isn't the last
time it's gonna happen. King Heye at News Flash Late
Breaking News, Max Stark said that they're not gonna that
they're going to face at versity later in the season.

(26:51):
This is more on SNR Radio. It's gonna happen again,
it is, but you came out on the right side
of it in this moment, and you're gonna need that
type of resiliency to draw back on as you get
later on this journey that's called the NFL season.

Speaker 4 (27:05):
By the way, I know you're talking about the new guys,
but off of the captain Alex Highsmith, who I thought
played a played a pretty dark good game as well,
and had had the loan sack for the Steelers. So Max,
it is time for our AFC recap presented by UPMC,
the official healthcare provider and health plan of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
So going back to Friday Night, the Chargers defeating the

(27:27):
Chiefs twenty seven to twenty one, and you know, you
start to wonder, are the Chiefs standing on shaky ground?
I think that's an old Temptation song, right standing on
shaky ground? I think anyway, sounds like somewhere in Motown. Yeah,
you know, kind of that late when Motown started to
started to delve into the psychedelic and some of the

(27:49):
other influences at the time. Anyway, the Chargers defeat the
Chiefs twenty seven to twenty one.

Speaker 3 (27:54):
The Chargers.

Speaker 4 (27:55):
You know, that's again we don't want to draw too
many conclusions from week one, but Chargers, like, you know,
they're organized, and you talked about coaching before. You know,
Stealey was all about, you know, going forward on you know,
fourth and eight when the wind was blown out of
the southeast to whatever the chart saying all that other stuff.
And you know, Harball just seems like he's coming and

(28:17):
organized that thing a little bit more crisply. And and
you know they're I think they're going to be a
team to be reckoned with.

Speaker 2 (28:26):
They absolutely are. I mean, this is a team that's
very different now in year two under under coach Harbaugh
and Greg Roman's offense has evolved. We thought this is
a team that was going to come out and pound
the rock. We thought they were gonna do kind of
what the Jets, absolutely because of the way that they
created this team, the way that they drafted, spent a
first round pick on Omarion Hampton, you bring Renajie Harris

(28:48):
over and free agency, seems it will be physical. Well
they did. They aired it out three hundred and eighteen
yards for Justin Herbert showed you why he was He
was the leader of the most passing yards in their
first five seasons in the NFL, in NFL history. That
guy right there, he's killed ball tremendously well and he

(29:08):
put it on full display with that. You know, well,
we talked about most quarterbacks, you know, a year ago,
not being able to throw for over three hundred yards. Hack.
They a lot of them couldn't get to two hundred
yards a week. One Hey, justin Herbert right out the
gates said hold my beer Friday night, let's go ye
three hundred and eighteen yards. So a solid performance for them,
and they did it in multi ways and they didn't

(29:30):
break down how you normally see, like there's a charger
breakdown in a game. They kept the eye of the
tiger that entire time and was able to out to
outduel a team that's known for magic and dramatic and listen,
it wasn't for a lack of effort. Patrick Mahomes started
trucking guys because he was so frustrated trying to get
his team jump started, right. He had a couple of

(29:50):
he had a couple of quarterback scrambles and he laid
into I think that was die on the Chargers and
dropped the shoulder charge on him, gave him a little
gave him a little shiver there and and dropped him
and then had a rushing touchdown where he was diving
for the pylon. So it wasn't for lack of effort.
They just they didn't have an answer. And I think
when they lost Xavier Worthy earlier in that game, that

(30:13):
changed the whole complexion of what they expected to do,
and the Chargers were ready for it and they responded
in kind. So yeah, I'm not going to glean a
lot and say, oh my god, the Chargers are now
the AFC West contender and they've now dethroned the Kansas
City Chiefs. Are not going to say that by any
stretch of the imagination. But they sacrificed a home game
to play in Brazil and it's a key divisional game,

(30:35):
and they came out on the other side. So advantaged
them for taking taking a home game on the road
in a foreign country and pulling out a victory.

Speaker 4 (30:44):
That is one elite team down. Last night the Ravens
lost the Ravens. They just they probably just want to
get onto Week two, right, I Mean, this has been
just they do some you know, some prime time incredible games.
Last year it was the tow By out of bounds, right,
and then this one, you know, two fifteen point fourth

(31:05):
quarter leads and you wind up losing forty one to
forty to the Buffalo Bills in just an incredible game.
But that is now two elite teams in the AFC
that are zero to one.

Speaker 2 (31:20):
Yeah, that's that's another one. This game was electric. I mean,
listen Derek Henry doing the same Derek Henry things we
last saw him when he played the Steelers. I mean,
the man rushed for one hundred and sixty nine yards
and seemed unstoppable. I don't know what fountain of youth
he's found. I don't know what where in Baltimore he's
eating his crab cakes at I don't know what's in

(31:41):
those crabcakes. But he does not age it. He does
not look like a guy that's played in the league
as long as he has. The way that he runs
is accelent. He's too big to be running that fast.
It's it's it's an anomaly. It's it's like a fast boulder,
except for us not going downhill like you could justify
boulder gaining speed and momentum going down a hill. This

(32:03):
is a flat surface, Kinger. Last time I checked, the
NFL field is not played on a slam. It's very now, yeah,
but this dude seems to be faster than everybody else
and it's opportune moments. What happened in that Bills and
Ravens game. A guy who doesn't fumble that gets forced
on a fumble and turns the ball over after as

(32:26):
fantastic of a night as he's had. One moment changes
the entire scope of that game, and the Bills took
advantage of it and discourse. I mean, was Josh Allen
score with sixteen points in the last four minutes of
the game. Eventually, that's that's ridiculous. But it comes, you know, opportunity.
What is luck. Luck is when opportunity meets the moment,

(32:49):
and they met They met the moment in kind with
the opportunity that was given to them, and they came
over victorious. And it was a heavyweight match. I mean,
we're talking about eighty one points scored in this game.
That's a lot of points. And to come on the
other side of that and take an l is tough.
It also goes to show you that these are two very,

(33:09):
very evenly matched squads. And this is the game. If
you played that game ten times in a row, you
would get you would get ten different outcomes.

Speaker 3 (33:17):
Five and five.

Speaker 2 (33:19):
It would be five and five. There's no there's no
six and four, no seven and three. It would be
cut right down the middle.

Speaker 3 (33:24):
By the way.

Speaker 2 (33:25):
There was also retreat.

Speaker 4 (33:26):
There was also one of the It wasn't on the
I don't think it was on the touchdown run. I
think it was on another long run. But they they
had a slow moll replay of Henry was running to
the right and a defensive back came up, you know,
within two or three yards of the line of scrimmage,
hit him sideways. He was he had a perfect angle
to bring him down. And you know, I got to

(33:48):
tell you, man, if you're a defensive back, the Venus
de Milo school of tackling ain't gonna work.

Speaker 2 (33:53):
Man.

Speaker 4 (33:53):
You better wrap him, you better get your arms. He
just he donked off of him. He ran up and
like hit him like right in the thigh with his shoulder.
And Derrick Henry, it is like a fly running into
a wall. You know the wall is not moving. You know,
you better wrap them up, and so and one other.

(34:14):
I just want to get to one other score before
we go to a break, because we have to get
to a break here, and we'll continue to talk more
about other games around the league, including a very interesting
Raiders defeat of the Patriots in New England, the team
this Doo Thiss will see in a couple of weeks,
but just kind of for this part of it, just
touching on the elite teams again. This is our AFC

(34:37):
recap presented by UPMC. Or suppose the elite teams. The
Texans go down to defeat to the Rams. There's another
team I think fully expected to win their division. So
you have the Bills favored to win their division, they
go down. The Texans finished favor to win their division.
They go down to the Rams fourteen to nine. The
Chiefs favor to win their division, they go down. So

(34:59):
there's three teams favored to win their division that lose
in Week one, And that just.

Speaker 2 (35:05):
Goes to show you how great this league is. That
Texas Rams game, that Rams defense who they're a buzzsaw.
I'll say that Braden Fist, Jared Versu a company. Those
are some young dudes that can play some football and
it was. It was. It was crazy to watch. This
wasn't a high scoring affair, very low scoring affair. Only

(35:28):
twenty three points scored in this game, but it came
by clawing, scratching, gnawing. And both these defenses are very
very good. Defense is going head to head. You'd argue CJ.
Stroud to young and up and coming start the quarterback position,
and they just it was it was. It was a
good heavyweight match. And like you said, the Texas lose

(35:51):
to that squad and you're like, man, well look at that.
And then you see transversely across your division what happens.
You get the Colts that take a victor against against
against the Dolphins don't get nervous yet. But teams are
much improved this year, so it's going to be a challenge.
I caution everybody, this is not one where one team's

(36:13):
just gonna run away with them. They're just gonna be great.
Especially on the AFC side. It's very evenly matched in
any given Sunday that anything can happen. I'm not hitting
the panic button on CJ. Stroud and and Demico Ryan's
down there in Houston. But that was a game that
will matter. The good thing for the Texans was it
was out of conference, so you know, there's that, but

(36:36):
it is a common opponent for the entire AFC South.
They're matched with the with the NFC West this year,
so and head to head matchups. You know, now you're
the Texas, You're hoping everybody else loses to them as
well because you just took an l to a common opponent.
It wasn't a conference loss, it wasn't a division loss,
but it was a common opponent loss. So that's something

(36:57):
to always keep in mind when we're thinking about the
big picture as we progressed.

Speaker 4 (37:00):
The season, yep, and underscoring once again, something that I'm
gonna go ahead and drop something kind of profound here,
Max that people may not have thought of. One to
O is better than oh and one there you have it.

Speaker 2 (37:13):
Oh there it is.

Speaker 4 (37:14):
Yeah, it's uh, that's the way you end a segment.
It's that's a powerful statement. But the Steelers are one
to O and that's a good place to be, all
kidding aside, Man, one to O was good because there
are a lot of teams that a lot of is
expected of and they are zero to one right now,
and having different kinds of meetings in their rooms around

(37:34):
the NFL and around the country. That's our AFC recap
presented by UPMC. Back with more Inside the Locker Room
with King and Starks, presented by your neighborhood Ford Store.

Speaker 3 (37:42):
Here on the Steelers Audio Network.

Speaker 1 (37:48):
This is in the Locker Room with King and Starks
on Steelers Nation Radio, presented by your neighborhood Ford Store.
The F one point fifty is the official truck of
the Pittsburgh Steelers and by Steelers Pro Shop. Get it
direct from the team at the Steelers Pro Shop at
shop dot Steelers dot com.

Speaker 2 (38:10):
All right, it is time for the bell lap early
on mat Engage. Make sure wherever you are you go
out there and get your forward. John is a victory
donut Monday, so make sure you top it off with
a donuts as your dessert. Remember you eat enough and
save enough room, that is for a victory donut Monday

(38:34):
as Steelers are victorious against the just thirty four to
thirty two. There we go, there's my recap.

Speaker 4 (38:39):
Yeah good, there's a there's and there's a Dolph of
the Cat, the Great Craig Wolfley. Honor him in the
pregame show, uh, you know, prior to the kickoff. And
I think we're planning on doing that again on on
on Sunday in some way, shape or form for the
first home game. Our great buddy Craig Wolfley I remember,
you know, for the last several years strolling over from

(39:01):
the DV studio into the studio down the hall here
and the donut box was out, you know, and Wolf was.

Speaker 3 (39:08):
Come on, Ginger, have a donut, Come on kind of
how you can have to come on?

Speaker 2 (39:13):
Uh?

Speaker 3 (39:14):
And you got a slabry knock in at the end
of the game. Well done with the slaberknock, Max, That
was great, loved it.

Speaker 2 (39:21):
Yeah, yeah, you have to put that in there. I mean,
those that those that allowed for us to be in
this position, you got to honor them. And what a
what a tremendous legacy both Wolf and Tunch gave to us.
And like I said, you know, any way that I
can honor them and we can honor them, we make
sure we do that because if it wasn't for them,

(39:42):
we wouldn't be in the positions that we're in right now.
And the Lake and of course you know the late
Myron Cope and then of course the great Billy Hill grow.
That's what I got to see on Saturday when I
was when I was double dipping on Pittsburgh Football Weekend.

Speaker 4 (39:56):
Still going out of still has that still going believable voice.

Speaker 3 (40:01):
Man, what a voice.

Speaker 2 (40:02):
The brevity of it all is just amazing. And and
even me going into my first broadcast for the Steelers,
Billy still giving me tips like next, make sure you
talk from the diaphragm. I'm like, you know, thank you, Bill,
I appreciate that. Don't forget to breathe. So what what?
What an awesome honor to have those type of legends

(40:26):
around and know that that's the legacy that you're walking into.
Is truly a special pleasure, a treat, and a challenge
that you know, I gladly accept. I know you gladly
accept it. But it is just great.

Speaker 4 (40:39):
Yeah, in this organization, and obviously we're employees of the
organization or a former player of the organization, but you
are just the caretaker of the position, right if you
are you know, even if you're Mike Tomlin, you're just
a caretaker for the next head coach, you know, to
some degree right there, there's there's part of that if

(40:59):
you're a center, you're if you're Zach Frazier, you're the
caretaker of a position that has become exalted. Many how
many franchises have a position that's like the center position,
that's an exalted position, But it is with the Steelers,
Max real quick students are one to oh, thirty four
thirty two.

Speaker 3 (41:19):
What are you taking from this? What's going to go on?

Speaker 4 (41:22):
As you know, players kind of wandering today? You know,
maybe you have some meetings off day and then back
at practice.

Speaker 2 (41:29):
Uh, corrections, corrections are key. That's what today is for.
You have a corrections practice. You'll watch the film The Good,
the Bad, and the Ugly is Mike Tomlin likes to say,
when he goes through the film, he'll he'll have it.
He'll have his cutups ready to show guys, you know
those moments that matter, good, bad, ugly In the process.

(41:50):
That's a walking, talking resume of what the Steelers are
as a team at this moment. That's the snapshot and
what are you going to do to get one percent
better today and the day after that leading up to
the very next contest where we host for the home
opener the Seattle Seahawks. So a very big day. You

(42:10):
can enjoy a victory for up to twenty four hours,
but it's back to work onto the next one, as
they say. And you can't revel and wallow in a loss,
and you can't over celebrate a victory. It's just one
of many in both directions. So you want to make
sure you're doing everything in your power to get better,
get healed up. Cause we talked about the best that

(42:32):
you're going to feel was that day you showed up
to La Trope for a report day at training camp.
So now your biggest thing is to make sure that
the downhill slide is not a steep angle but more
of a low plateau that kind of just goes undulating
down very much so over the course of the season.

(42:54):
So you got to take care of your treatment, got
to take care of your body, take care of your
mind with the film study, and be ready to write
and roll come.

Speaker 4 (43:00):
Wednesday for more hours of celebration for us. Then on
the twenty four hour rule. He is Max, he is
Max Starks. I'm Rob King, Justin Millers, our producer here
in our iHeart Studios. You've been inside the locker room
with King and Starks. Presented by your neighborhood. Fordsir, we
thank you for listening here on the Steelers Audio Network.
