Speaker 1 (00:06):
This is in the Locker Room with King and Stars

Pittsburgh Steelers and by Steelers Pro Shop. Get it direct

Speaker 2 (00:26):
All right, there it is.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
That's the sound welcome optimism. Another victory, my friend. As
you keep raw rolling and we will roll into our
number two. Here it's the Power Hour inside the Locker Room,
and this is a victory donut Monday, as we kind
of talk about the victory that the Steelers just amassed
(00:55):
yesterday and all of the stats and all of the
emotion of the day taking down the league's best record,
a team with the league's best record in the Indianapolis Colts,
a team that had been on five or the top
offenses in the NFL. We talked about, I mean, you know,
(01:18):
four out of their seven games this season, thirty eight
points are better in those contests and just an absolute
lights out performance. And when you talk about having like
signature of victory throughout the season, this would you could
put in that category as a signature of victory.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
Of the season, and.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
Man, oh man, what a thrilling game, what a thrilling finish.
As we kind of delve deeper into this and kind
of throw out the superlatives to all of the guys,
but this has been that, this has been a great
game to kind of look back finally on.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
It's only one game.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
But also the rule is we get twenty four hours
to enjoy this, and we are going to enjoy all
twenty four.
Speaker 4 (02:02):
Hours of this victory here on the show today, and Max,
I want you to know that not for my own
personal satisfaction, but for the legacy of the show. I
went into the break room and found myself a cake donut,
you know, one of those cake donut things on a stick,
(02:24):
and I had one to celebrate. It was a cake pop,
which I'm counting as a donut for solidarity. It's a
donut hole. That's exactly what it is, Max, exactly what
it is. Well done. So I had a donut hole.
So I'm keeping the drive alive here. So the Eagles
(02:45):
made another trade. I don't know if you saw this.
It just picked up Jalen Phillips from Miami. Don't forget
the trade deadline is coming up tomorrow. We probably if
the students do something and it comes down to the
last possible minute, we won't have our take on that
till Weddnesday. But they went out and got jyr Alexander
from Baltimore. By the way, speaking of trade, and I'm
(03:09):
sure that the defensive back they Ravens send a Dape
out to the Dolphins. They get a defensive back back,
a Daphe has been a disappointment in the pass rushing
phase for them, not what they thought they were going
to get. They get a cornerback, a defensive back that
helps solidify their back end, which has been a big
problem for them, even with all those great players they
(03:30):
have back there. A Daphe has four sacks in four
games for the Chargers, two of them yesterday. We'll see
him coming up on Sunday. But I don't want to
talk about the Chargers defense. We have all week to
do that. I want to talk about the different heroes
for the Steelers, and I think I have to start
with TJ Watt because TJ got the ball rolling, you know, strip, sack,
(03:56):
fumble recovery, So you get the force fumble, the fumble recovery,
the sack, all in one and the students needed a
big play. And when you need a big play, you're hoping,
you're you know, look, you'll take it from anywhere. But
it's always nice when your best player comes up and
makes that play.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
And TJ.
Speaker 5 (04:14):
Watt did that yesterday.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
Man, you know, you'd heard the rumblings of other people
and talking about you know, how could you have paid TJ?
How how could you do? You paid it for what
he could do, what he did do, not what he
could do in the future. You you know, you've put
the organization back. You know, I heard all of these
(04:38):
rumblings from folks, and man, does it feel good to
sit here a day later after hearing all of that
noise and you see that performance and then it just
it just starts it up.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
It's like, well, you see that.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
Days you know, since last accident, you know, type of
type of things up there at construction sites and it's like,
you know.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
Days since you see t J. Watt make a play game,
you know.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
People just chalking off every you know, every every day
or every game, and then you get to wipe that
thing back down to zero. Now, obviously on a construction site,
it's a little bit of a negative when you wipe
it back to zero, because it mean something happened. But
this is a good bad This is for opposing teams
that were keeping track.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
Man, look at that man, Hey, he's not doing his job.
Speaker 3 (05:30):
And they're like, oh my god, we have to start
it all over again because t J. Watt is you know,
it's never that he was gone, but my goodness, t
J Watt was on fire. And you know, and I
had this argument, I forgot who I was talking to,
and it's probably good that I forgot who I was
talking to because I probably would have outed them, but
I don't remember, so that that that's a good thing.
(05:52):
And they were just talking how could you pay him
that much? But yet you know, and then they were like, well,
I would pay Miles Garrett because Myles Garrett is, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
He's not that much younger. What are you talking about?
Speaker 3 (06:03):
I was like, first of all, I was like, Miles,
Miles is not that much younger, and Miles has not
had the same amount of production.
Speaker 2 (06:10):
And yes, you do move Miles around, I said.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
But the sheer numbers and the impact that TJ has
on a game when he gets in there, it's a
whole different story. Everybody elevated. He elevates everybody around them,
and I can't say that for Miles Garrett. I cannot
say that for Miles Garrett. And TJ happens to have
way more sacks than Miles Garrett and he has way
(06:33):
more other stats as well, because you look at he
led the league. Do you know he led the league
last year? Here and force fumbles, you know, And what
did he do yesterday? Force fumble and recovery. He got
a two fur Actually he actually was a trifecta because
he got the sack too, strip sack, force fumble, fumble,
(06:54):
recovery all in one play, triple statter, triple statter play.
I can say I've not seen that from I've see
that more often from TJ Watt that I have seen
from Miles Garrett. And that's the way he affects the
game in so many ways. And he's so good at
what he does. You know, people want to talk about, hey,
we need to move TJ around more like everybody else.
(07:17):
I said, but do you know how tough it is
to do what he does from one position?
Speaker 2 (07:24):
Like just think about that.
Speaker 3 (07:26):
Like he does that and literally every team knows where
he's going to line up. Every team is going to
game plan for this guy to be there. They know
where he's at. Early on in the season, remember they
were running away from it. It was like at one point
it was ninety percent of the runs we're going away
from TJ.
Speaker 2 (07:43):
Watt because you're scared of running at him.
Speaker 3 (07:45):
Right, And that makes his stats even more impressive because
you know where he's going to be. Miles Garrett, he
can line up anywhere. He's looking for the weakest link.
Right as he's lining up and down the lineup and
trying to find a mismatch TZ what whoever is there
is gonna get it, and in that case is usually
three guys that he's gonna have to wade.
Speaker 2 (08:06):
Through, Like, oh, his numbers aren't God, doesn't matter. Doesn't
matter if his numbers are great or not.
Speaker 3 (08:10):
The fact that he's doing it weekend, week out, year
after year.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
That is an ultimate tip of the cap.
Speaker 3 (08:16):
That you could do it at one position and do
it to that degree to be one of the greatest
to ever do it at that position, that is a
tip of the cap. And he was just absolutely phenomenal.
And yesterday I was so happy because I was thinking
in the back of my mind whoever said that to me,
I'm just so happy you're watching right now, because this
is why, this is why you you know, you talk
(08:40):
about one helmet guys. That's a one helmet guy, and
he showed you yesterday why he's a one helmet guy.
Speaker 4 (08:46):
And keep in mind too that he did have four
games at least four consecutive games to at least half
a sack, so it's not like he just completely disappeared
off the radar.
Speaker 5 (08:59):
So he plays a strong game.
Speaker 4 (09:01):
On the other side, Alex high Smith two sacks, forced fumble,
just a disruptive force all game long. I think he
was another guy that just really turned in a great
game for the Steelers.
Speaker 3 (09:14):
Yeah, I would say he and uh and Peyton Wilson
were absolutely.
Speaker 5 (09:19):
One at a time one of the time.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
Okay, I'm saying as far as superlatives at the top,
like that's where you have to put Alex's name up
there with that, and I'll just make it a comparison
because we had already talked about it once, Kinger, we
already talked about Peyton Wilson once, so it's okay to
mention his name.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
Uh. But what he did for the run game as well,
especially setting the edge.
Speaker 3 (09:43):
Because remember, like for as good as Nick Herbick is
in the rush game, like what sets Alex Heismith a
part is the fact that he can play the run
exceptionally well as well as pass rush. Right, it's that
well rounded. He creates a border wall and and that's.
Speaker 2 (10:01):
You know, wind health.
Speaker 3 (10:02):
And I know he went out a little bit early,
had the ankle, had it looked up, spat it up,
ready to go, and he was just a force and
he was everywhere at once, and he pushed and forced Jonathan.
Jonathan Taylor didn't really get to break to the outside
on any rushes yesterday. They bottled him up. And a
(10:24):
big reason because of that. Alex high Smith was there
and he would turn and force the cutback for Jonathan Taylor,
which would turn him right into the teeth of the
defense and allow for the Derek Harbin's, the Camp Haywards,
Keanu Benton's and company Ya Blacks and everybody to make
plays on Jonathan Taylor and not really think about this.
His longest rush was what nine yards yesterday?
Speaker 5 (10:47):
Long as it was yes long as his nine yard
That is.
Speaker 3 (10:50):
Crazy, and he had to run that in between the
tackles and you know, obviously he was a little engine
that could on that one play, but he was a
little engine that couldn't for majority of that game and
that and I would credit a lot of that to
Alex Heismith and how he played the edge on the
left side.
Speaker 5 (11:06):
So he was tremendous.
Speaker 4 (11:07):
And we might as well get to Peyton Wilson and look,
no offense to Patrick Queen forced fumble yesterday. He was
very evident out there. I mean, it's a two time
pro bowler. We know how good of a player Patrick
Queen is. Thought he played, had some you know what,
he didn't have a ton of tackles in the game
by his standards, but it just felt like everything he
made was physical and really good. But Peyton Wilson phenomenal.
(11:34):
Nine tackles, four assists for a combined thirteen tackles, interception,
two passes defended, had a tackle on special teams remember
on the kickoff and again yeah, you know, a brief
aside for a doff of the cap. Once again to
the student's special teams and Danny Smith, great job. You've
(11:55):
got the eternal weapon of Chris Boswell. You have weightman,
the punt team, but the coverage units. The Colts came
in with the second best kick return unit in the
NFL and the Stuther Stemiedam. The Colts got nothing out
of their kick return and nothing. You know, you're the Colts.
You're looking for a spark to try to get yourself
back on track. They got nothing. Nothing anyway. Peyton Wilson
(12:19):
had a tackle on special teams and just again, you know,
if I was gonna hand, you know, pick out a
handful of guys, that's five I guess right, five fingers,
so we can pick guys. He's one of the guys,
no doubt about it for me.
Speaker 3 (12:34):
Uh yeah, you got my own little horn there. Sorry,
justin to stuff on your toes. I'm sure you probably
had a really good sounder.
Speaker 2 (12:44):
Uh yeah. This was this was defensive player of the game.
Speaker 3 (12:47):
Peyton Wilson just just phenomenal effort. He was sidelined to sideline, backfield, upfield,
dropping and coverage. He did it all and he made
an impact all of those phases of his game defensively,
and it was just it was apparent he showed up frequently.
(13:08):
He showed he showed up exceptionally, and he had a
game he had a game that you look back on.
That's the one you tell your grandchildren about when you're
sitting around the hearth in a cold winter's night and
they're asking for a story from Grandpa.
Speaker 2 (13:23):
It's one of those. It's one of those you know,
you know it was. It was.
Speaker 3 (13:30):
It was absolutely beautiful. Just mayhem is the best way
of describing that, right. It was just beautiful, unbridled he was.
He was doing it with tenacity, ferocity, and and skill.
Speaker 2 (13:46):
It was. It was a thing of beauty. It was.
It was awesome to watch and Peyton Wilson man, hey,
you did it, but you did it.
Speaker 3 (13:53):
Hey, I can't I there's there's there's no crack in this,
you know performance.
Speaker 2 (13:58):
It was. It was an exceptional performance by Peyton Wilson.
Speaker 4 (14:03):
I want to give a little doff of the cap
to Darius Slay for coming back in the game with Yeah,
I have no idea what the finger injury was, but
the tape over the top of the two gloves. You know,
you talk about, you know that that team from twenty
years ago, and you talk about what makes a football
team and what leadership looks like. That's what it looks
(14:25):
like to me. He was in obvious pain, and I
guess we didn't see it. I didn't see it from our
angle looking down in the field, but they showed a
replay and I guess they they kind of went to
his finger and he was like whoa, you know, he
pulled his hand back like he'd been burned on the stove.
So he was clearly in huge discomfort. They went into
the blue tent for like a cursory moment, took him
(14:45):
back into the locker room. You're figuring that's probably that.
Then he comes out with, you know, tape around the
two fingers, ready to go, and I just think that's
that shows you something, you know what I mean? That
shows you young players, something that shows your teammates something
that you are a multiple pro bowler and you know,
(15:07):
thirty four years old, right, you know, more games behind you.
I would think it's safe to say than ahead of
you at that age. And to be able to come
out and tape the fingers up and get out there,
that shows some grit. And I think that's the kind
of thing that goes a long way toward what we
were alluding to earlier, just leadership within the confines of
the team.
Speaker 3 (15:28):
No, it does and this is a team effort. And
there's a difference between being hurt and being injured, right, Rob,
We always hear about that, are you hurt or are
you injured?
Speaker 2 (15:40):
Right? You know the old time coaches.
Speaker 3 (15:42):
When we were young playing ball and trying to figure
it out, that was always the rally and cry for toughness.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
Are you hurt? Are you injured?
Speaker 3 (15:50):
And so, you know, for for Darius Lay, you know
was he was, he was he showed that he was
hurt even though he might have been injured, because you
don't want to let your teammates down and you know
how important it is. And you know, I'm sure he
also realized, hey, we are down to a lot of numbers,
you know on the secondary and can I push through
(16:12):
or can I not push through? And a weaker person
would have would have succumbed to that, right, a very
selfish person would have succumbed to to that and thinking
about only themselves. But when it matters, and when you're
when you have the support of the guys around you,
you know, it makes it easier to make the right decision, right.
You know, when you're around a lot of good people
(16:34):
making good decisions, it's easier for you to make those.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
Good decisions in turn.
Speaker 3 (16:37):
And actually, I don't know, I don't know if I'm
actually talking to you guys about the game yesterday, I'm
talking about parenting right now, but because it feels like
parenting advice to a degree, but that that that is
what you want to surround yourself by guys who are
like minded individuals and who have the same goals as you.
And I thought for Darius Slay that was a huge
it was a huge step where it was easy.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
He had.
Speaker 3 (16:59):
He had a great excuse to not play anymore, right,
you know, he had to go to the blue tint
and he had to go back to the locker room,
and it was easy to look at your look at
your streetwear outfit or the Steelers close it does not
have a uniform or a helmet associated with it, put
that on and come back out and just be a
just be a you know, cheerleader of moral support guy.
But no, he came back out, taped it up, walked
(17:23):
it off, and put his hand in the pile.
Speaker 2 (17:25):
And I thought that was just a tremendous sight.
Speaker 3 (17:27):
And I know they had to encourage a lot of
guys as well playing in that game.
Speaker 2 (17:32):
A guy who's seen it all.
Speaker 3 (17:33):
I mean, Darius Lay has has been in sleep for
a long time, and to see him kind of suck
it up, so to speak. I mean, you don't know
what type of example you're showing for some other young
guys on that sideline.
Speaker 4 (17:43):
Yeah, that's seeing it. First of all, be careful which
hand you're putting in the pile.
Speaker 2 (17:49):
Right now, whichever had his kids, but especially the hurt hand.
Speaker 4 (17:56):
I under say what you're saying, Max, And you know,
it just shows you that you know to play in
that league, which is first of all physical. It's like
the story that you know, the Ali Norton fight. Ali supposedly,
you know, Norton always thought he broke his jaw. Late Ali,
in the fight he lost to Norton, claimed that his
jaw was broken in the second round of a fifteen
(18:16):
round fight. I think about that, man, You're getting hit
on the jaw, a broken jaw for fourteen rounds, you know,
depending on what had happened in the second. Well, you've
got to go out and tackle people and knock balls away.
And I don't know, we haven't heard an official injury designation.
I don't know whether his finger was you know, was
(18:37):
it broken? Was it dislocated? By the way, That almost
sounds worse to me. Like I like the location of
all my my bones where they are right now. I
don't want one dislocated. I like them where they're locally. Yeah, no,
thank you. Great stuff by Darius Slay, just again to
show that kind of leadership.
Speaker 5 (18:57):
Plenty more heroes to get to.
Speaker 4 (18:58):
We got to get around the AFC is well, take
a brief glimpse of what happened yesterday and what it
means for the Steelers moving forward. We're going to do
that when we continue in the Locker Room presented by
your neighborhood Ford Store and the Students Pro Shop on
Steelers Nation Radio, a part of the Steelers Audio Network.
Speaker 1 (19:18):

team at the Students Pro shop at shop dot Steelers

from the Steelers victory yesterday over the Colts at home
twenty seven to twenty wasn't even that close. But first
it's time for AFC Recap, presented by UPMC, the official
healthcare provider and health plan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. I
(20:22):
want to start with another game that was not as
close as the final score would suggest, and that was
the Chiefs and the Bills yesterday afternoon. The Bills wind
up winning similarly to the Steelers by a touchdown, Right,
so you think, okay, well, you know, hey, the Chiefs
are still playing good football. Twenty eight twenty one. It
(20:44):
really felt to me like the Bills kind of manhandled
the Chiefs in that one, and there we go. The
Chiefs looked like the team to beat, and we're all
thinking maybe they're the best team in the AFC again.
And then they they you know, wasn't lopsided, but the
Bills really had them arm's length pretty much the whole game.
And now I got to scratch my head again, Hacks
and wonder who's the elite team in the AFC.
Speaker 5 (21:06):
I'm not sure.
Speaker 3 (21:08):
Yeah, we got to go back into the pollypocket notebook
and start and start checking our notes, because, like you said,
it's one of those things that you look at it
you're just like, Okay, this is kind of a four
gun conclusion. Oh, you know, the Chiefs are back and
oh man, they're charging.
Speaker 2 (21:24):
And then Buffalo, who looked like they were reeling.
Speaker 3 (21:27):
You know, they had their own two game lose streak,
losing streak, and they looked like they couldn't figure out
which way was up. They had a bunch of injuries
on the defensive side of the ball. Offense had had
started to work out some great things with their rudding
attack and Josh Allen being Josh Allen, and then it
was like, Okay, you've got the big bad Chiefs coming
(21:48):
into town and they handled them. It was very similar
to kind of us, you know, where it was a
four gun conclusion that the away team that was the
favorite and the home team was the underdog.
Speaker 2 (22:00):
Man.
Speaker 3 (22:01):
It was like you said, it was. It was a
very overwhelming performance. But I mean, the Chiefs of course
are going to put points up at the end, but
it looked like, you know, it was a futile effort
at the end because that defense had Patrick Mahomes and
that entire Chiefs offense bottled up for majority of that game.
Speaker 4 (22:18):
We talked about this on Friday, but Thursday night, the
Ravens defeat Miami. They're three and five, They've won two
in a row coming out of their by They got
Lamar Jackson back in this past game. They're at Minnesota.
Who Now suddenly I'm thinking, well, wait a minute, you know,
maybe that's Minnesota look to be really maybe that's not
that easy of a game. But then they're also at
Cleveland against the Jets, against the Bengals. I suspect they'll
(22:41):
be favored in every one of those games. Coming into
their December seventh meeting with the Steelers there three and five,
they're two games behind the Steelers, and so you know, listen,
you got to you gotta be concerned a little bit
about the Ravens. I think just because we know that
they have high pedigree, and we we know they're capable
of playing good football in their start and you get
healthy and the schedule is a little bit more forgiving
(23:04):
coming up in the next several games. Then we have
the Bears and the Bengals. When we were, you know,
in our broadcast was over, Max, we were watching the
end of this one and then a long touchdown pass
by the Bears, the Bengals scored forty two points and loss.
The Bengals have scored eighty points in the last two
weeks and lost both games. You know, I wondered if
that had ever happened before, and I guess I was
(23:25):
told by Bill Crawford, Mike Presuit of the guys that
Randy Bauman on the Morning Show that that happened in
the sixties once that a team had scored eighty points
and back to back games and loss. But they got
a puncher's chance. We're going to see them in a
couple of weeks, but that was a huge loss for them.
They're in there. I mean it's it ain't over till
it's over. But you know, the fat ladies warming up
(23:48):
the voice and getting ready to sing.
Speaker 2 (23:50):
Yeah, the vocals are coming out. It is.
Speaker 3 (23:53):
It is tough, and like you said, it's not gonna
get any easier, not going to get any better. For
know that this Cincinnati team, and you know, I'm so
upset and I'm so set.
Speaker 2 (24:06):
Not in this moment. Yeah, listen, listen, I get it.
Speaker 3 (24:11):
Hey, I have I have a certain affinity and tie
for the Cincinnati Bengals. Obviously my father played for the
Bengals for a long time. And you know, for going
with chronological history, I'm sure there's some part that you
know I was, I was, I probably had some ties
to Cincinnati, uh in in in my life process. So
(24:31):
I don't, I don't, I don't. I don't take that
for granted. I don't. You know, my wife was born
in Cincinnati, so you know, I do like Cincinnati. I
definitely don't like the Chili, So let's just put that
out there. I will never be a fan of that
of that, uh you know, Cinnamon Boligners.
Speaker 2 (24:48):
But you know this is one where you know, as.
Speaker 3 (24:52):
A team that put a lot of money a lot
of effort and a lot of resources into a couple
of positions, and you know, one of those positions is
not performing right now and he's been on the sidelines.
Uh you know, Joe Cool is like Joe Glass. And
you know, this big old squad is one that we're
going to have to be ready the next time around
when they come into ackershur Stadium. We have to treat
(25:13):
them accordingly. There's a team that does not have a
winning record, and you need to play up up to
your own standards and not down to the level of
competition for the Steelers, but you know, we're gonna see
that Chicago team, uh, you know, in a couple of
weeks as well. So you know, well I'll be studying
that film doubly just to see what what we've got
in both of those teams, because we'll have I want
to say, back to back weeks, correctly, that's correct, Cincinnati
(25:35):
first at home and then and then the Bears the
week after we Chargers Thanksgiving.
Speaker 4 (25:39):
Chargers Cincinnati Chicago, then the Bills. So that's uh yeah, yeah,
we got to stretch and then you know, Baltimore comes
into town and all kinds. But anyway, that that's for
the future. That's future.
Speaker 3 (25:50):
Yeah, yeah, it just applied because both these teams we're
going to see So that's the only reas.
Speaker 2 (25:54):
Why that's right.
Speaker 4 (25:55):
Chargers got to give them credit. Man, Uh, you have
to give the Chargers credit. They you know again battling
through injuries. They want to run the football, they want
to play smash mouth football. They're out their top two
running backs, you know, Joe All we mentioned this. Now
they've won back to back games. A man handled Minnesota,
(26:16):
which made you think Minnesota was, you know, pushing towards
a precipice of complete failure before they then shocked the
NFL by defeating the Lions in Detroit yesterday. Anyway, they
beat Minnesota, they beat Tennessee. We'll talk much more about
the Chargers coming up. But you know, when you think
about you know, the Chargers are you know, listen, they are.
(26:37):
They're they're formidable, right, I mean, they can't be taken lightly.
There's six and three, they're three and zero in their division,
they're five and one in conference play. So when you
start to talk about, you know, if it comes down
to the end of the season with you in Baltimore
and and you know, can you get into the playoffs
another way out of other than winning in the division.
(26:58):
You know, a win over the La Chargers go a
long way. First of all, you play them head to head.
And secondly, much like just went over the Colts, the
Culture now six and one in the in the conference. Right,
that's the best record in the AFC. But the Steelers,
the Steelers are four and one in the conference. The
Bills are for and one in the conference. The Chargers
are five and one in the conference. Jacksonville three and one.
(27:20):
They've played fewer games, but you know, these conference games.
Maybe not ready yet, but we're just putting a little
mental asterisk in your mind to think about that down
the line, because you know that could wind up being
a factor conference records. So but of course head to
head is a big one. So just go beat them
and take care of that.
Speaker 2 (27:38):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (27:39):
Uh, the Broncos battle boy that the Texans a man,
remember everybody. I believe when the odds came out, they
you know, I was listening to a podcast, a national podcast,
and they're talking about the odds to win each division,
and I believe the Tens had the best odds of
(28:01):
winning the South. It may it may have been the Bills,
but I think I'm pretty sure it was the Texans
had the best odds to win their division and they're
in big, big trouble as they lose to the to
the Broncos eighteen to sixteen. I mean, yeah, yeah, eighteen
to fifteen.
Speaker 5 (28:18):
Eighteen to fifteen.
Speaker 3 (28:19):
Sorry no, And it was all field goals for the Texas.
You lose CJ. Stroud in that game, gets a concussion,
gets knocked out. Davis Mills comes in and tries to
will that team. But that man, that offensive line is bad.
The offensive line is bad. And you saw two and
you also saw two of the league's best defenses in
(28:39):
Denver and in Houston, and it came down to who
could will it. And it literally was a Bonnicks twenty
five yard scramble that that was a differentiator to get
the go ahead field goal at the end of that game.
And it was just, man, it was a dog fight.
It was a dog fight from start to finish. And
(29:00):
you know, the Broncos are for AFC West, you know, Yeah,
is a daunting one, guys, it is a daunting one,
and they are gonna come down to a photo finish.
I mean kind of like how it used to be
in the AFC North, you know, between US Baltimore and Cincinnati.
That is what is shaping up with with the Broncos,
(29:21):
the Chargers and the Chiefs. And like you said, you know,
if you're the Broncos, you got a leg up on
the Chiefs with just pure record. And of course the
Chargers own like you said, all three of them, they
at least the first three games of the season, it
went three and oh against them. So that's that's a
heck of a way to have half your division schedule
already wrapped up in September.
Speaker 2 (29:40):
Yeah, and you've got three victories.
Speaker 3 (29:41):
So it's gonna it's gonna be really crazy to watch
how how they kind of finish things up.
Speaker 4 (29:46):
And the Broncos, you know, going into the season, which
young quarterback would step forward like we've seen, you know,
a couple of years ago, we saw CJ. Stroud and
last year we saw Jaden Daniels And you know we're
still where's where's Bryce Young, Where's Caleb Williams? Are they
going to be part of this mix of emerging young
quarterbacks and a lot of people looking at JJ McCarthy
(30:07):
getting an opportunity, but he's a little earlier obviously in
his progression because of the injury last year. Then the
other two guys, Bo Nicks and Drake May and what
could they do to elevate them those teams? Could they
begin to push and challenge those upper echelon teams? And
I always figure, you know, maybe one of those teams
(30:28):
is good for that, but it kind of looks like
both of those teams, like the Broncos and the Patriots. Man,
the more the Patriots continue to play, the better. Like
people are like, well, who this jew is beaten them? Okay,
well you've beaten the Patriots and you've beaten the Colts.
Speaker 5 (30:42):
That's pretty good.
Speaker 3 (30:43):
Yeah, those are two pretty good feathers in the cap, right,
I mean to have it, I mean you've beaten two
division leaders.
Speaker 2 (30:51):
Yeah, exactly.
Speaker 3 (30:52):
And then they think, oh, you know, Steelers have no
we've played we played guys. You might not have thought
they were guys at the beginning of the season when
you look at the skin when you were doing your
strength to schedule. But now if you readjust it, it's like, no,
we've got some good ones now. Granted, yeah, and look
at and the team we lost to in Seattle. Seattle
is a monster team. Do you see what they did
(31:13):
Sunday Night Football.
Speaker 4 (31:14):
Last I mean, are they yeah, oh, are they no
hot team? Or are they going to be number one
in the power ranking? We love the power rankings because yeah,
we love but they're fun, They're they're just.
Speaker 3 (31:25):
There's such a knee jerk reaction.
Speaker 5 (31:28):
They really are.
Speaker 2 (31:29):
I love so great.
Speaker 3 (31:30):
It's so great because it's just like, oh oh, this
seems so good, and it's like once you get that
number one Moniker, it's like you have a target on
your back every time. But you're right, I mean, this
is one that you look at and see and Seattle
is is definitely showing some signs of life. But yeah,
I mean there's some great football in the parody. This
year in the NFL is absolutely great.
Speaker 4 (31:52):
So you have Jacksonville and Jacksonville beats the Raiders thirty
to twenty nine, with the Raiders going for two at
the end of overtime trying to win the game. Right
instead of a you know, kicking in and then and
then I would have continued right thirty thirty, you would
have continue for the last minute or whatever, so they
(32:13):
decided to over the win. So they don't get it
and you know, this was a team in Jacksonville. They
beat Carolina, lost to Cincinnati at the beginning of the season.
Then they beat Houston, San Francisco and Kansas City. So
again at the beginning of the year, I thought, hey,
this is a team that's going to improve.
Speaker 5 (32:30):
On where they were a year ago.
Speaker 4 (32:31):
They're gonna be a you know, maybe a seven eight
nine win team. I didn't have him pegged as a
as a championship team. But you have a new coach
in there, you know, finally Trevor Lawrence maybe has that
leadership that he needs. You add Travis Hunter, who of
course is now injured in a big trade. But you
got weapons for Lawrence. You got weapons at the running
back position, at the receiver position. So I'm thinking, okay,
(32:53):
they can take a step forward. Then I start to think, man,
you beat Houston, San Francisco and Kansas City in decutive weeks,
you might be for real. And then they get throttled
by Seattle. But Seattle's awfully good. You get beat by
the Rams. The Rams are awfully good, but that was
a pounding. That was a beat down thirty five to seven.
So they go into their buy and I'm thinking Okay,
(33:15):
maybe I maybe I shot a little too high for him.
Then you come out, you win an overtime, and now
you're five and three, and there you are. You're in
pretty good shape if you're the if you're the Jaguars.
So again, top seed Turvy NFL season, and you know,
I'm back to like, I don't know who you can
count out anymore, you know.
Speaker 3 (33:34):
Yeah, Well, and and Houston's in the three hole in
their own division, right because Jacksonville is right And Jacksonville's
only one game out of.
Speaker 2 (33:42):
First place against the Colts, that's right.
Speaker 3 (33:44):
So you look at that, it's like, no, there's still
there's a lot of season. They still got to play
each other, so there's a lot still on the plate
for Jacksonville.
Speaker 2 (33:52):
But like you said, it's just up and down.
Speaker 3 (33:54):
Especially they're way different than the team we saw in
the preseason to start to start this year out, So
you know, there's a lot of.
Speaker 2 (34:01):
Hope springs eternal for them.
Speaker 3 (34:02):
You know, you get the weapon is obviously no Travis Hunter,
Brian Thomas has been really quiet last couple of weeks.
But Trevor Lawrence, Travis ETN and company. They've done the job.
But they got they did it exactly what they did
to Trayvon Walker got kicked out of that game as well.
It was it was a very similar to uh to
(34:24):
what was it Jalen Carter yep, So, very very similar
type of situation where you lose one of your top
defensive guys for doing something stupid, but they were able
to overcome that stupidity.
Speaker 4 (34:40):
So that's the AFC recap presented by upm C back
with a little bit more on this to this game.
Can't finish wrapping it up today. Great win for the
Steerers yesterday, but we will continue in that vein when
we continue in the Locker Room presented by your neighborhood
Fords Tour and this year this is Pro Shop on
Sutherish Nation Radio, a part of the Steelers Audio Network.
Speaker 1 (35:02):
This is in the Locker Room with King and Starks
on Steelers Nation Radio presented by your neighborhood Forward Store.
The F one fifty is the official truck of the
Pittsburgh Steelers and by Steelers Pro Shop. Get it direct
from the team at the Steelers Pro Shop at shop
dot Steelers dot com.
Speaker 4 (35:23):
And while we were on the tack, I just said,
you know what, where do the Steelers sit in the
playoff picture.
Speaker 5 (35:29):
They're fourth right now, Max.
Speaker 2 (35:31):
Yeah, yeah, they are. They are at you know, for
that effort, we gotta let them know. It's the Bell Lab.
Speaker 5 (35:38):
There we go. Wow, I'm losing my mind.
Speaker 3 (35:43):
Division leader still is the Pittsburgh Steelers. And yes, we
might be in fourth right now, but we just took
out a team in front of us in the Innneapolis Colts.
Speaker 2 (35:53):
So what is that?
Speaker 5 (35:54):
What does that la? What does that bell lap mean?
Speaker 2 (35:55):
Max? Max?
Speaker 3 (35:57):
The bell Lab is the final lap, is the final
lap before where you get to the before you get
to lunch. It was the early lunch warning system that
you must engage to get your forging habits. Of course,
if you have not gotten your victory donut for victory
donut Monday, this will be a perfect time.
Speaker 2 (36:12):
To go get it. I got it.
Speaker 4 (36:13):
I got a victory cake donut Monday cake hole donut.
We're calling it a donut hole.
Speaker 2 (36:19):
Yeah, we are calling it a frosted donut hole.
Speaker 4 (36:21):
We'll still still feel a little LOGI from that.
Speaker 5 (36:24):
That could be get me.
Speaker 4 (36:25):
There's the other things that could be getting LOGI, but
I'm gonna I'm gonna blame it on the donut hole. Uh,
So I jumped the gun again in the man. I
went like, I went like three months without doing that,
and then last week I got into a bad habit.
Speaker 5 (36:37):
Last week, they say it takes two to three weeks
to break a habit, max, so it does.
Speaker 2 (36:42):
I'm gonna. I'm gonna.
Speaker 4 (36:43):
I'm gonna fourteen days, okay, so starting right now, starting
right now, well tomorrow, I'm gonna break that habit.
Speaker 5 (36:50):
Okay, I'm gonna break that habit.
Speaker 2 (36:52):
You're jumping in that sign.
Speaker 3 (36:54):
You're gonna get back to zero, all right days, this
last interruption of the bell lap.
Speaker 4 (37:00):
So here's the beauty of here's the beauty of the
NFF NFL schedule, and the beauty of our jobs is
that you still got to play the games.
Speaker 2 (37:08):
Right.
Speaker 4 (37:08):
You don't know what's going to happen. If you did
know what was going to happen, first of all, we
would not have jobs because there'd be no there'd be
no sense of even playing the games. You know, two
guys would run out to to the middle of the
field with their with their laptops, and they'd sit down
and and they'd tap on the computer and then one
of them would stand up triumphantly with his fist in
the air, saying we won right.
Speaker 5 (37:29):
I don't know how many.
Speaker 4 (37:30):
People would watch that, by the way, but but you
got to play them, right, You got to play them
in the Steelers, you know. And we'll get again in
and again to the great defensive stars in the game
because we hit about well, we hit I'm going to
say we hit. I have how many guys I have
written down? I have eight written down, so we hit
about half of them. Actually have nine written down. We
(37:51):
hit four ninths of these Steelers defensive stars in the game. Well,
actually I mentioned Sleigh, so five tenths, so half we
got half the stars. Big picture, little picture. However, you
want to wrap it up, Max, as we wrap up
this edition of today's show, what are you taking away
from yesterday's victory?
Speaker 3 (38:13):
It's only one game, but it was a heck of
a game. And I need more, you know, just like
just like, uh, what was Bruce Bruce Dickens in the
SNL skit.
Speaker 2 (38:27):
I need more cow Bell.
Speaker 5 (38:28):
That's right, I know where you're going now. I'm with you.
Speaker 3 (38:31):
More cow I need more cow bell, more defense, I
need more turnovers, I need more sacks and need more
big plays.
Speaker 2 (38:38):
I need more.
Speaker 3 (38:38):
Follow it up, guys, follow it up, and then offensively,
can keep on keeping on, keep on coming, keep on creating,
keep on pushing. Develop that run game, get a little
bit tighter in the passing game, you know, not as
many drops. And you, guys, the futures in front of you,
I mean, the answers, like I said, to all of
(39:02):
your woes and all of your questions can be found
in those four walls of the Steelers facility over there
on the south side.
Speaker 2 (39:09):
That is a.
Speaker 3 (39:10):
Heck of a game against a heck of a team.
And you've now shown you can do it, so now
show that you could do it again. And can this
show go on the road? Can you travel? Can the
defense travel all the way to La La Land? And
can you go into Sofi and do the same thing.
They're a vulnerable team, but they're also a really good team.
(39:31):
And that's also another division leader. We're going to see
him back to back weeks, right because we just saw
the Colt Now we're about to see the Chargers, who
are leading the AFC West. You know, they're in front
of Denver, They're in front of Kansas City, and so
that's the next team on the list. You know that
you got to mark off and it's gonna be a
lot of fun. It's gonna be a lot of fun
to watch.
Speaker 5 (39:50):
Should point out one game behind Denver in the in
the West.
Speaker 2 (39:54):
Oh, Denver overtook them.
Speaker 5 (39:56):
Yeah, Denver. So Denver's Denver's a game ahead of the Chargers.
But they're right there because the division, right there're three.
Speaker 2 (40:03):
They are a division leader, right.
Speaker 4 (40:06):
You were thinking in terms of the clarity of the explanation.
You're thinking in terms of where they stand within their
own division as far as games played, which is something
we have discussed. But yes, we're gonna spend the rest
of the week looking forward to that match up. You know,
a big one, a huge one for both teams. You know,
we get a week out man life for the NFL.
(40:28):
It's fun stuff, Max, my friend, thank you very much.
Look forward to talking again tomorrow as we'll maybe get
an inkling of if the Steilers are going to make
a move in the trade department with the trade deadline
coming up tomorrow, and we will certainly not only relive
some of this fine victory for the Steelers, but look
forward to the game against.
Speaker 5 (40:44):
The Chargers as well.
Speaker 4 (40:46):
For Max Starks, for Justin Miller at the controls here
in our iHeart Studio, I'm Rob King. We thank you
for listening. In the Locker Room presented by your neighborhood
Ford Store and the Steelers Pro Shop on Steelers
