Rob Kendall will Google gives Shabaz Jim Merritt. The program
is State House Happenings, your weekly look at what's going
on with Indiana politics and the government. Before we begin
the program, let's meet the award winning panel you know
for thirty years and the Indiana sentate, the great Jim Merritt. Hello, Robert,
and you know him as the owner and operator of
Indiepolitics dot Org Abdula Kemshabaz, Hello, it's not tired this morning?
(01:51):
Uh what a charmed I guess. Yeah, all right, So
we got several topics to get to. I think we
need to do a little disc claimer before beIN this
program because sometimes people don't really know. I really don't
like any of these people. No, you don't say I
had no idea.
Speaker 3 (02:09):
The question is who do you like?
Speaker 2 (02:12):
Well, the very few I mean like I mean in
terms of the political system and with some of the things
we'll talk about here today or hopefully get to you today,
or the exact reason why these people tell you one
thing when they run and then they get in there
and then they do the exact tight like it doesn't matter.
You and I Jim have talked about this before about
I don't even know how to vet anybody. I don't.
(02:34):
I don't even know because unless they have an actual
track record of doing it, which how few people are
there with that, you can't believe it or any of
these people saying I think that's why so many people
are just so frustrated and why voter participation is so low.
You can't believe in or believe almost any of these people.
I couldn't agree more.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
I think this little implosion with the Republican caucus in
in Over in the City County Building kind of I
know these people, what are there six of them.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
Yes, there's one, two, three, four, five, six, yes, and
and uh.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
But being a former caucus chairman where you gather the
you know, the the group and uh, and you think
you know everybody and I and some of those people
are there when I was kind of chairman, you just
can't figure them out.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
Yeah, I think that's you know, obviously you're an esteemed
member of the press like I am. I think that's
one of the reasons. There's many reasons, but I think
one of the major ones is so many people, for
a variety of reasons, just see no point in voting
because nothing ever seems to change. You invest in people,
you believe in people, and then you don't get anything different.
(03:48):
People just go, h what's foint?
Speaker 4 (03:49):
Well, I think part of it is to a certain degree,
it's it's naivete on the part of the voter or
the supporter, which is you you believe it's you believe
this person is you know, the second Coming, and they've
got all these great ideas we're gonna do wonderful one.
At the end of the day, they're people. At the
end of the day. If if I'm a cynic, people
are no damn good.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
Well, also don't. Look, I don't believe anybody is any
coming of anything. I just expect them to do the
things that they campaigned on. Well.
Speaker 4 (04:16):
Well, yeah, and I also believe it beloho's a politician.
If the policy's gonna be honest, it's like, hey, no,
say here's what I'm going to do. Let's say here's
I'm going to try to do.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
Well.
Speaker 3 (04:24):
Let let's let's circle the wagons here a little bit.
We have a situation with the Republicans and the City
County building, the City County Council, who uh, the Republicans
feel like they want another leader because it purportedly it
reportedly said with Michael Paul Hart, who I find is
a good friend of mine, is not mean enough or
(04:47):
is too mean?
Speaker 2 (04:47):
So real quick, So the Republicans Monday night, there's six
of them, they out of what out of twenty five? Yeah,
so they ousted Michael Paul Hart as the leader of
the Republican caucus. Yes, it's six versus twenty five? Clear
and yeah, yeah, six out of twenty five, six verses
(05:08):
nineteen and the I mean, it's not a secret. The
four of them thought Michael Paul Hart, who we certainly
on this radio station. Don't think it's being nearly mean
enough to hogs that were like, he's being a little rough,
he's moving a little quick for us. We don't like
all of these ideas. I talked to a very reliable
source inside the city government the other day and they
(05:30):
just said, yeah, that's right. They just thought the guy
was trying to do too much. Two pest. It's like,
we don't feel like he was trying to do anything.
Speaker 4 (05:36):
And so it's like, what what cause I would a
worgue with With Michael Paul Hart. People say he was being,
you know, too mean to the mayor. Actually, from my perspective,
I think the criticism was he was being too nice
into accommodating.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
Yeah, that's what we thought. We we think he was.
But I've talked to again, like I said, just multiple
people inside of city government who said the four that
voted voted to kick him out felt he was moving
too fast, that he was trying to do too much.
They had too many things going. They basically didn't want
to work.
Speaker 3 (06:07):
Yeah, well, the it is confounding. I'm not sure if
it's more embarrassing for them to have a change than
to give the reason.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
For the change.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
I mean it is just astoundingly.
Speaker 4 (06:22):
And then and then they went back to the leader
that they got rid of in the first place.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
Right, it's not that you went some new up and comer,
some new guy. We're gonna try this new this is
what we're gonna do. Went back to Brian Mowory, who
is as entertaining as glue.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
Yeah, it's uh, it's just really, and are they trying
to compete with the Democrats on the other side of
the aisle of who is the most.
Speaker 4 (06:44):
Hey, you get dysfunction, and you get dysfunction, and you
get dysfunction.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
But the point of all this, and like I said,
talking to some people about this and they just didn't
have an answer. I said, So the Republicans are just
they're fine the status quo, the hog set never ending,
just drama, chaos and competence. Like just being there is
good enough for those It's very clear just being there
(07:08):
is good enough. They don't want to rock any boats,
they don't want any challengers or money thrown against them,
and they're just like, hey, cities and shambles, but this
is fine.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
Right, And you know it, really, when I heard all
this news, it gives a lot of credence to the
fact that you know the mayor, Mayor Joe hogs It,
he's on autopilot and he can run for reelection in
twenty twenty seven and just kind of blow right through.
Speaker 4 (07:35):
See that, I respect this Sagreer is my good friend,
Jim Merritt. I would say, right now, Hogs, that's on autopilot.
But I can assure you that there is video footage
of all the stuff that's happened over the past couple
of years. But we'll mysteriously resurface.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
Okay, but doesn't make us any difference. That's a great question.
It clearly hasn't that far.
Speaker 4 (07:51):
I would argue it does in the sense that it
drives a wedge amongst the Democrats.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
If hoggs It gets a primary calendar. Okay, So we're
basically this is this fascinating. We're basically now operating from
the premise because I took multiple people that were in
the room of that meeting, that city county council meeting
the other night, and they said, Hoggs has running, Like
the speech that he gave was a guy who's running,
which what else are you gonna do? He's basically unhirable right,
(08:18):
given the drama, the chaos, the scandal, the all, you know,
his whole stuff. Well, you know, I'm not an agist.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
Jim, Yeah, I am.
Speaker 2 (08:25):
I never think you're old too. I'm old too, But
I mean the right. So I mean we're basically I mean,
who knows right whether Ryan Meuers runs or whether Oscily
runs or you know whatever. But and they're all flawed.
Well sure, but I mean they're they're flawed what we
(08:45):
know about them from a policy perspective, Like there's things
we don't agree with them that they Joe oxit is
a personal dumpster fire. And but I I I just
think if he runs again, he'll win.
Speaker 3 (08:57):
Yeah, well I think I think if Joe hoggs it
wants to run, is healthy enough to run, will run
and will win. There's no question about it. And everything
that people have thrown at him in the last ten
years or something like that has just kind of kind
of kind of fallen off the the stage.
Speaker 4 (09:17):
I will say this, A healthy economy solves the multitude
of issues.
Speaker 3 (09:21):
Yes, yes, And you know, if it is a balanced
budget that he presented, he can always he's always tied
himself to that.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
And with that, a balanced budget Jimmy doesn't have a choice.
Speaker 3 (09:32):
Well he can, he can offer a balanced budget with
raising taxes and that could be a problem, but just
doesn't seem like anybody's watching.
Speaker 2 (09:41):
No.
Speaker 4 (09:41):
No, The big thing in this budget wasn't necessarily the
the no tax pledge, which which I get. I thought
it was interesting, however, that they're laying the groundwork for
fee increases, not necessarily taxing the old Yeah that's a tax.
Yeah yeah, no, Actually, actually technically it's not. Because a tax.
You you know, you don't have a choice. You have
to pay the fee if you want the service, then
(10:02):
then then you just.
Speaker 2 (10:05):
Hit a couple of things they're thinking about charging fees for.
Let's let's see how now vital the service?
Speaker 4 (10:10):
Exactly.
Speaker 2 (10:11):
That's where yeah, exactly. I've been a part of this
game and fought it for years. Buddy, I'm the wrong
guy to try that with. Rob Kendall, O Goill, keeps
your boys, Jim Marrett, the program of State House happenings.
You're look what's going on with the Indiana politics and government.
One thing that doesn't appear to be going away, though,
at least for now, are these AI porn allegations involving
(10:32):
members of the Lieutenant Governor's workforce UH an employee of
the office, as well as what they were an in
house attorney attorney that they had brought into the legislative
session allegations by Tom Labianco, a freelance journalist, that that
they had viewed and shared uh a artificial intelligence pornography
(10:56):
in the Lieutenant Governor's office. And this is a story where,
like so much of the Lieutenant Governor's office, it is
in the lieutenant governor period, the refusal to be transparent
and what it seems as deceptive about something is causing
(11:18):
the story to not go away.
Speaker 4 (11:20):
For example, when Micah says you, no, we launched an investigation,
blah blah blah blah, Like, Okay, when'd you do it?
How'd do where's investigator report? Who'd you talk to? If
we're talking about openness and transparency, then you should put
all your cards on. I'm not saying, like, you know,
put you know, obviously you want to you want to
protect some of them, some of your investigative reporter, which
I get that part, but I think in the situation
(11:41):
like this, you're better off putting out anything and everything.
Speaker 2 (11:44):
Yeah, So let's reset this or what I'm talking about.
So with Tom Labianco put this story out, he reached
out to Micah this was I believe On a Saturday,
Micah claimed, we've investigated it. You know, I was just
made aware of it, and we investigated it and these
guys didn't do it. And he echoed that sentiment at
Tera Hate at a town hall on Monday. So that
(12:07):
means basically within one weekend day, if he indeed was
not aware of it and he investigated it, that gave
him one weekend day to have launched this investigation. So
us the media have said, well, who'd you call? Was
it forensics RS? Was it state police? Was it the
(12:29):
Marrick County prosecut You would assume it's not the Marion
County Prosecutor's office based on statements people like Craig Haggard
have made that his wife is the alleged victim here
of the adult the artificial intelligence pornography that was created
and shared and viewed. He said, I talked to the
prosecutor's office, so clearly they didn't indicate to him they
had investigated anything. So who investigated it? What was the process?
(12:54):
What did they check? Who was interviewed? How did you
do all of this in one day? And you can't
any answer from Micah about any of this. And we're
twelve thirteen days on from this now, Jim, and these
are not only people who have been they're workers under
him or with him. They're massive supporters of him, the
guys who were named. And the idea that you'd let
(13:14):
them twist in the wind like this for thirteen days.
If you got the key to end all this, why
wouldn't you do it? You know?
Speaker 3 (13:20):
It's Uh, I ran into you can't. Yeah, well, I
ran into somebody at the grocery store. And this is
somebody that has been in politics and not intelective office,
but interested and and they just said what are they
doing at the State House? And I'm sure they're asking
what are they doing with the city county council?
Speaker 2 (13:40):
Now?
Speaker 3 (13:41):
It's it's chaotic, it's embarrassing. Why aren't you looking at
why aren't the Republicans looking at each other and at
the situation and cleaning this up and giving us a
report because it's all you can find the chaosk online.
It's very easy with forensic and uh. And it just
(14:05):
goes back to being a super majority state.
Speaker 2 (14:08):
And so I know you Abduah have filed a foyer
request related to the info. I know Lobianco has filed
a foyer request. Now there's a rumor MICA's office ain't
great at fulfilling foyer requests. But we'll see what comes
of that. So it's like you're gonna have to put
up or shut up anyway. Why do I why.
Speaker 4 (14:26):
Those on the two apter requests we know about well
right right, because you know Nicki Kelly and he had
a couple of chronicles done one.
Speaker 2 (14:33):
So then this is the point, it's like, you're guy,
these are you guys? And if Lobyanco is making this
up and you have the key not only to set
them free. By the way, if indeed they could prove
that Lobbyancle made this up because he's essentially said they
did something which could be construed as criminal activity depending
on who makes that call, they should sue him for everything.
(14:56):
You think Micah wouldn't love to have some massive victory
over over Lobbianco. If indeed there's like it makes no.
Speaker 3 (15:03):
Sense, there's fire there, there is fire behind the smoke,
and Tom is a accomplished writer and reporter, and uh
it what And if that would have happened, uh, Lieutenant
Governor's staff would have come out right away. And and
and you know the old idea is get in front
(15:24):
of it and stamp it out and uh and it
and it didn't and and just as long as it
goes on, the more truthful it actually is. And it's
just incredibly Uh. I feel so sorry for Haggard's wife.
Speaker 2 (15:37):
Well, so here's the other interesting part of this, which
is Mike is chief of staff her husband, so Michaeh
Beck with chief of staff her husband appeared on social
media too, and it's always the spouse right to indicate
there's a grand jury investigation going on. Now he's tried
(16:00):
the word salad what he said, but I put the
post up for people to see. And when he posted
that about the grand jury, it's like, wait a second,
nobody said anything about a grand jury that I'm aware of.
Where did this come from? Which would lead you to
believe that? I mean, that's a bizarre thing to just
mention for no reason, right, But yeah.
Speaker 4 (16:21):
I have two cheeseburgers the loger fries.
Speaker 2 (16:22):
Oh yeah, the grand jury is like what huh?
Speaker 4 (16:26):
So that I can confirm that the grand jury is
actually looking at this, that's the thing.
Speaker 2 (16:30):
So you're telling you're saying, the grand jury is that
that that that exists? Yes, okay, so.
Speaker 4 (16:35):
But but then again, that's my job to find out
that stuff. I don't know what the hell he was thinking, Like,
why would you put this out there?
Speaker 3 (16:42):
Yeah, but it wouldn't be regardless of grand jury, wouldn't
you if you were in the very beginning, if this
wasn't true, wouldn't they just have a whole force of
nature on social media trying to stamp this out and
saying it's not true, this is reckless, this is they are.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
But the problem is that that they can't put any teeth.
They refuse to put any teeth behind it. So it's
like the new thing now is this is everything else?
This is all my fault. And it's like, wait a second,
you're saying, I control La Bianco, I control a duel,
I control the Capital Chronicle, I control the Indie Star,
I control the Marion Kenny Prosecutor's office, I control this
apparent grand jury that exists, Like, come on, and by
(17:23):
the way, can abdul can you talk about because this
is interesting and I cannot believe this guy stooged on
himself if indeed he did, which again, why would you
say grand jury? We know the Marion County prosecutor is
looking into something, but dual clarify, A grand jury is
way different than just the impd or Marion County Prosecutor's
office doing something that. Can you explain what a grand
(17:44):
jury is and how it works?
Speaker 4 (17:45):
Yeah, a grand jury is an im paneled a group
of citizens get that are that are picked and partly
by the prosecutor's office they call and witnesses they call
him testimony or and you have basically testified before a
grand jury. You don't get your self incrimination rights type
of thing. You don't get any of that. You got
to answer the questions honestly and truthfully, otherwise you're convicted
of perjury. And then the grand jury will either return
(18:06):
an indictment or not return in indictment. Okay, And usually
and sometimes what a prosecutor will do is if it's
a political nature like you Democrat prosecutor Republican lieutenant governor,
they'll turn over to a grand jury.
Speaker 2 (18:17):
Is safe? Is it safe to say that a grand
jury is not just when law enforcement or cause prosecutor's
office will say we're looking into it. They think there
could be something there. This is not you've moved kind of.
I mean, it is an investigation in a sense, but
you've moved.
Speaker 3 (18:34):
Past the there has to be something there and it's
also sealed correct.
Speaker 4 (18:39):
Yeah, either either a you surely believe something has happened,
or you have a really have a really good inkling,
like you know what, something here just isn't right.
Speaker 2 (18:47):
It smells funny. Yeah. So that him, uh Mike as
chief of staff's husband outing that grand jury thing, which
you're now confirming your sources have told you that's a
legitimate thing. Okay, all right. So the the other thing
with beck with is he's done this on multiple occasions
where you can't get a straight answer out of him.
(19:08):
See going to Game three of the NBA Finals with
a high profile known felon and you can't get a
straight answer on how he ended up there, how that
process came to be. Because the guy ended up with
we all know who he is, and we all know
his record, you know the twenty year plus rap sheet.
(19:31):
You don't just bump into that guy. And it's like
it's one thing after another with beck with where you
can't get a straight or coherent answer. And now it's
happening with this alleged investigation that he won't show to anybody.
Speaker 3 (19:41):
Right, and you know twenty eight it's twenty twenty five
right now, and twenty twenty eight is coming, and you
know you can you can see and if you can
see in the future of Governor Brawn looking for another
running mate in the convention, it becomes close ster and
closer by the day.
Speaker 2 (20:01):
And and by the way, if Governor Brown runs again, yes, yes,
but but the but the I mean, okay, can you
there's no confusion now, it's all just it's yeah, right,
you're right, it's all ridiculous. You had said something I
can't remember this on this program or another program, about
(20:25):
this potentially being more than yes, just AI pornography allegation.
Speaker 4 (20:33):
Yes, I know for a fact that what the people
are looking for.
Speaker 2 (20:37):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (20:37):
It started out as an AI porn investigation. But as
you know these things, Oh, what's this?
Speaker 2 (20:43):
Huh?
Speaker 4 (20:44):
What's that? It has led to much more stones, much
much more than that. And part of it involves employment
and time sheets and where people you know, at work
when they's supposed to be a work why is this office
closed on Fridays and it's opened up a whole nother,
whole nother cand of worm. It's because remember, uh, when
Bill Clinton got impeached for the Paula Jones stuff, it
(21:04):
was it shot out as well, Monica Monica Lewinsky. It
start out as whitewater investigation and then it turned into
something else.
Speaker 2 (21:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (21:13):
One of the most incredible journeys I've witnessed is seeing
people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including autism, get the
care they deserve. It's life changing. A not for profits

information called eight one two, four, four three, three zero
zero three. Statehouse Happenings also wants to thank our fine
friends at Freedom Foods Indiana. Farmer Ryan Schleiman and the
(22:21):
folks at Freedom Foods Indiana have been delivering fresh fruits
and vegetables right to people's doors for years, and Freedom
Foods Indiana is a big supporter of State House Happenings. Now,
Freedom Foods Indiana has some big things coming. We can't
wait to tell you all about it in the near future.
Right now, though, we just want to say thanks to
our friends at Freedom Foods Indiana for supporting State House Happenings.
(22:42):
Rob Kendall, Abdulaquim Shabaz, Jim Merritt. The program of State
House Happenings you a weekly look at what's going on
with Indiana politics and government. Last thing I wanted to
get today is the redistricting bron Braun. You ever noticed
Braun will never make a definitive statement, like he'd never
He's always just like every he's so wishy washy.
Speaker 3 (23:02):
Well, I was confused the other day. I thought I
saw a comment by him that they're they're watching what
is happening in Texas.
Speaker 2 (23:08):
That's what he said. What does that have to do
with here?
Speaker 3 (23:11):
Yeah, well it has nothing to do with it because
we have a super majority and he can call them
in ten minutes.
Speaker 4 (23:17):
And I know for a fact that Speaker, Speaker Houston
and Rod Bray want nothing to do with this.
Speaker 2 (23:23):
They are not fans. No, they are not fans all
telling them that, Yeah, they're like, what the blank are you? No?
Speaker 4 (23:30):
Because it opens up a whold of the can of worms.
It's gonna be a disaster. And and what I think?
What they I think? What?
Speaker 2 (23:36):
What they what? What?
Speaker 4 (23:37):
What team Braun is is the smart people in Braun's administration,
They really are some smart people. They're like, look, Governor,
if we were to do this, not only would this
totally screw the screw up the whole system, but number two,
it would open up the whole can of worms and
unleash holy hell because it looks like you're going after
black voters and trying to dilute and take away their strength.
And because you've got the African American voters in Gary
(23:58):
and that was screamed down here Indianapolis, and they start
coming out and I don't notice effect the congression race.
It effects a whole race. Stayed wide.
Speaker 2 (24:04):
Well, I mean, I'm sure those guys because Adam Ran
of Politico pointed this out. There was a video of
those guys walking out of that meeting with jd Vance
and Braun last week and he was putting out, look
at the look on these guys faces. Do they look
like they're happy to be here? And and you're right
right now, all you have to do as a Republican
is stay scandal free and just show up and you're
(24:24):
just gonna keep winning for the most part. Why would
you risk anything to throw that off? What so that
Trump can get one more seat? And what do they
care about that they're in the state. You know, they
lead the state and they're potentially gonna create a firestorm
and they and they don't get anything out of it.
Speaker 4 (24:41):
Yeah, because because Jade Vance also I want to say, uh,
I almost like, hey, let's just go for it instead
of because seven, because sometimes seven to two just isn't enough.
So like, hey, let's go for the whole bally like
like like like nine, like to split up the seventh
the wrestle district, Like are you first of all the
lawsuits that would come from that? And number two, you
want to you want to wake up, you want to
wake up a whole a hornets nest. You start taking
(25:02):
off African American voters, they start coming out and droves.
Speaker 3 (25:05):
Okay, but also you look at it on some people
don't really look this deep into it, But where's the data,
you know, Wor's census, you know, what are you going
to build this on? Because every ten years I saw it.
We we had justification for these districts that we wrote
that we drew in nineteen ninety one, two thousand and one,
(25:28):
twenty eleven, twenty twenty one, and there it's not there
for the you know, to establish the new districts. Because
this is more than just you know, taking out all
the Democrat districts. This is how it's just going to
impact all the other districts. So it's it's a real puzzle,
and I don't think the data is there.
Speaker 4 (25:48):
And you can make you make you can make the
first district more republican. First of all, you're not going
to get rid of Frank Van because my rand lives
in Maryville, which is right on the border. Right, let's
you just split Maraville in half. And number two. By
making the first district more republican, you make the second
Congression district less republican.
Speaker 2 (26:04):
That's my point because because.
Speaker 4 (26:06):
Remember it's like Tetris, piece over here, piece over here,
and you start playing games. What was once a seven
to two is now more like a five to fool.
Speaker 2 (26:14):
We got, we got, We had about two and two,
two and a half minutes left. Here's what some people,
me being one of them, are enraged about. Braun was
adamant during the legislative session. Well, there's no point of
me betewing the property tax bill and calling a special session.
Special session is a waste of time. And now you're
saying that on a thing that would help millions of people.
Everybody knows that's that that bills a dumpster fire. You
(26:36):
weren't willing to stand up and fight on that. But
to get one more seat in Congress, she'll do this.
What an insult in a slap in the face to
the people of this state.
Speaker 3 (26:46):
Well, let's go back to April fifteenth with the economic forecast.
I said at that time they should have sundy died,
you know, adjourned, say we're gonna come back in late
June when things settled down with taxes, with the UH
all the tariffs and everything, all the disrupt in April
UH and and things are going to be a lot
(27:06):
better in mid to late June. And you can and
you can be nimble and make a good decision on
property taxes, on the budget and anything else you need
to And and the legislature did not do it because
it's it's not the protocol. And I wish they had
done it, and and we'd be in a lot better shape.
People who in December left their their jobs, their careers
(27:29):
to go serve in the broad administration and then they
get cut because there isn't any money, if you know,
perceived any money for the forecast. And it's just a
shame that the State of Indiana wasn't more nimble UH
in understanding that was just a wave of bad news
that would not be there in June.
Speaker 2 (27:46):
You got about twenty seconds left to do it. Last
word school starts in a couple of weeks. Thank God,
all right, good Jim MERRITI, Bill gives you Baz, thank you,
thank you.
