Speaker 1 (00:07):
Om are pretty much one one draft end you start
on the next, maybe even longer working for this one.
What is that process like for you personally? And is
there a favorite part for you?
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Favorite part? It's a good question. I say, just the
people I do it with. It's it's great. You know,
we had we enjoy the process. We have a good time,
you know, Coach t and his group and then obviously
my group with Andy and Dan Colbert and Mark Sadowski
and the rest of the guys. We have such a
good time through the process. A lot of work, you know,
a lot of hours. But I think for me it's
(00:39):
I just love the people I do it with and
that that's what keeps it exciting.
Speaker 1 (00:43):
How would you describe this final push, the final week
heading into a draft.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
What's that like?
Speaker 4 (00:48):
You know, we're all dealing with hypotheticals.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
You know, we're sitting back trying to figure out what
the other twenty teams are trying to do, just like
everyone else at home is. And you know, all the
media and all the mocks. You know, we're going through
the same thing, and you know, we're trying to be
mind readers like the rest.
Speaker 4 (01:02):
Of the world.
Speaker 1 (01:03):
The first day of the draft on Thursday. How early
do you get to the building and what are those
final few hours as everybody there's nothing you can do.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
You're just waiting.
Speaker 4 (01:11):
You just we're just waiting like everybody else.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
You know.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
You know, hopefully when you get the Thursday, you feel
prepared and ready to go, and you know we've always
had and we're just waiting like everyone else.
Speaker 4 (01:22):
You know.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
I want to I want to say I'll get there
at mid morning, but usually I'll wake up so early.
Speaker 4 (01:26):
That I'm like, you know what, I'm just going to
get get up and go. And that's how it goes.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
After we're a moved past free agency, when you look
at your roster, what positions or needs do you feel
like you need to address this weekend?
Speaker 2 (01:38):
You know, if just anything specific. But we go to
camp with ninety guys. You know, I think we're in
the mid seventies right now, and you know, it's a
mix of holes at different positions, and so we'll just
see how it all plays out.
Speaker 1 (01:50):
Mister Rooney said at the end of the season that
the quarterback position is kind of that key piece of
the puzzle, top priority. How would you assess it as
we sit here today?
Speaker 3 (01:58):
Going into the draft. How do you view it in
terms of what you need to do?
Speaker 2 (02:02):
Sure, so we go to camp, you know, we go
to Latrobe, we'll be there with four quarterbacks. Right now,
we have two, so we have two positions open, and
I'm confident we'll have four quarterbacks by the time we
get to Latrobe.
Speaker 4 (02:12):
You know, and all options are on the our open
right now. May see. You know, we could trade for
a player or a quarterback.
Speaker 2 (02:17):
We could sign one that's a free agent, or we
could address it this weekend, so or a combination of those.
But I'm confident we'll be in a good position by
the time we get there.
Speaker 1 (02:28):
How does Aaron Rodgers' most recent appearance on the Pat
McAfee show impact what you guys do in the draft?
Speaker 2 (02:34):
Yeah, I wouldn't say. It really doesn't really impact what
we do in the draft. You know, we've obviously had
conversations in Republic, and you know, he knows how we
feel and we know how he feels, and you know,
we've obviously the conversations have continued. But I mentioned we
have two quarterbacks under contract right now, and we have
two more to acquire, and we'll go through the process.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
You and especially coach Tomlin.
Speaker 1 (02:58):
You're kind of everywhere during this cross us, whether it's
Pro Day's different things like that.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
But the pre draft is it's where you guys get
to bring guys here to Pittsburgh.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
Roderick Jones, Troy Patano, both guys were in this building
before you took them in the first round. Why was
it important to have them here in Pittsburgh.
Speaker 4 (03:14):
It's just part of the process.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
You know, sometimes you have some questions or you didn't
get enough time with them in Indie or a mobile,
and you know, if you have the opportunity to bring
them in and you know it makes sense to do so,
get to know them a little bit better, and you know,
sometimes you put them with the coaches, let them see, uh,
see what they think. And so that's just an opportunity
for maybe not necessarily coach and I to get to
know the player, but have other people in the organization
(03:37):
to interact with them and give us their feedback on
what they think.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
In terms of the draft, six picks, as we said
here today, none in the second round because of the
DK Metcalf trade. Are you comfortable with just six or
do you want to acquire some more draft to capital
very comfortable.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
We have DK I'll say that, and we have six
and you know, at this point we'd love.
Speaker 4 (03:56):
To have fifty picks.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
Sure, there's there's this is a good draft, there's some
good players that can help us, and if there's an
opportunity to make sense for us to acquire more picks,
we'll certainly do that, not only in the first round,
but in other rounds. But I've always taken the approach that,
you know, we're never going to trade away from a
really good player that can help us.
Speaker 4 (04:13):
So you know, we'll see where it goes.
Speaker 1 (04:16):
In terms of the communication with you, your staff and other teams,
how does that.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
Work during a draft weekend?
Speaker 4 (04:23):
Those conversations have already begun.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
You know.
Speaker 4 (04:26):
It's obviously it's a small group of thirty two.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
Gms, and we've already been communicating and I'm not sure
how honest we're all being in each other, but we're communicating.
Speaker 4 (04:34):
Have a feel for what other people want.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
To do, whether they move up down stan Pat and
you know, we'll see again, It's just so many different
things can happen here. We're at twenty one and we're
we're we're at the mercy of what the other twenty
teams are gonna do ahead of us, and we'll see.
Speaker 4 (04:50):
All we can do is be prepared, and I.
Speaker 1 (04:51):
Think we're there come Saturday night, maybe eight nine o'clock,
when you guys are done with some of the undrafted guys.
What would a successful Steelers draft weekend look like to you?
Speaker 4 (05:00):
You know, I think time will tell on that.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
Obviously a quirre good players, but time will tell, uh,
you know how these guys do.
Speaker 4 (05:05):
But are our ultimate goals to win a Super Bowl?
Speaker 2 (05:08):
So I think the way I judge it is, you know, eventually,
you know, being a general manager, I haven't won that
super Bowl yet, and I'll judge it by how many rings?
Speaker 4 (05:16):
Uh, you know we're able.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
To get all right? Thanks and good luck this weekend.
Speaker 4 (05:19):
Thanks miss, you appreciate it.
