Speaker 1 (00:00):
The intensity was back up at Patriots training camp on Saturday.
Big plays on both sides of the ball. Let's break
it all down. Welcome everybody to the Patriots training camp
cast on Mike you So, joined by Paul Perlo and
Evan Lazarre and guys. This was just a fun practice,
(00:21):
a lot of fun, some big plays.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
You know.
Speaker 1 (00:23):
I think both sides of the ball had some moments,
but Paul would stood up most of you today.
Speaker 3 (00:28):
I thought Drake may mainly made some nice passes downfield.
First time we really got to see him throw it
a little bit, say, beyond the ten yard mark with
any sort of consistency. There was ups and downs, and
that's why I think the coaches will probably be happy
because I think both sides of the ball had things
to be encouraged about, but also plenty of things.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
To try to correct. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (00:46):
Big play of the day probably a big throat to
Pop Douglas.
Speaker 5 (00:49):
Play of camp so far, exactly what we all love
to see from Drake, you know, off script, rolling to
his right, flicked it off of one foot like fifty
to fifty five yards in the air to Pop Douglas,
and you could see it developing. You're like, oh, he's
going to get behind the safety there, and Drake put
it right on them. So it was exactly the offscript
play that you're probably imagining in your head is exactly
(01:10):
what it looked like on the field. So that was
really good to see. But like Paul said, and there's
some ups and downs. Like I thought, there were some
incompletions in this practice, maybe a few more than what
we seen in previous practices from Drake, but overall you
saw some of those deep bombs down the field, which
is what we wanted to see as well.
Speaker 1 (01:26):
Yeah, the first two days of practice was primarily focused
on first and second down, a lot of completions, not
a lot of incompletions, balls hitting the ground. Today they
add in third down a little bit more aggressive, so
I think the pressure was on a little bit more
figuratively and you know, literally on the field with some
of the defensive players getting in the backfield. Robert Splane,
key On White, Milton Williams, those guys were all again
(01:47):
disruptive at times, but again the offense still managed to
make some place.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
I would totally agree.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
I thought the running backs got free a few times
on the linebacker. Splane did show some. I mean, I
think you had back to back plays we had nice
you know, pass perps, but on the downfield stuff, I
thought they were susceptible. That's why I think it's probably
a good sign. We've talked about a couple of times
in the last few years about how we would come
in from these days while the defense just dominated today,
or you know, the defense looked like they were out
(02:14):
to lunch today. Today, I thought there was kind of
some ups and downs for both sides. Pass protection, we'd
be my number one concern still, and I just can't
wait for Monday so I can stop giving the caveat
of well, they're not in pad, so we don't know yet.
Speaker 4 (02:27):
Yeah, well, Evan, we got a little bit of a
precursor today.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
There were some one on ones.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
Usually that those drills reserved for when the pads do
come on. Seems like they're setting the stage a little
bit for that. But you know, as much as the
team periods might have been inconsistent with the protection.
Speaker 4 (02:39):
You did see some good stuff in those individual drills.
Speaker 6 (02:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (02:41):
I thought Will Campbell had two really good reps at
left tackle against you frontline players, Kean White, Anthony Jennings,
so that was good to see. Anybody that tries to
beat Will Campbell around his edge, it's tough. When you
get a beat, it's usually to the inside, which we
saw maybe once or twice in the team period. So
I'm with Paul, it's a it depends on which way
you want to look at it. From Deuce's perspective, his
(03:03):
defense and his pass rush was getting after it. From
the offenses perspective, there definitely was some pressure on the
quarterback today during the team periods that needs to be
cleaned up, especially I would say the free runners's it's
one thing to get beat on the line of scrimmage.
That's going to happen from time to time, you know,
from time to time. But today I thought there were
two three instances where guys were coming in free unblocked,
(03:25):
and those are the ones that you want to get,
you know, taken care of there.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
Now, if you and I watched practice together, I want
to highlight something. I don't know if Paul saw this
or if this caught your eye, but noticed a little
bit maybe extra rotation going on with the safety position.
Usually the first team defense or whatever you want to
call them, the top line guys or out there. But
seemed to me today and Ev and I were talking
a little bit about Paul don't know this if you
notice this, but it seemed like they and ja Bill
Peppers was a little banged up too. I think for
(03:50):
a moment maybe that played into it, but it seemed
like the safety position, guys like Craig Woodson, Jalen Hawkins,
you know, Marcus Dep's getting maybe a little bit more
reps than some of the other positions.
Speaker 4 (04:00):
And if you can comment on that.
Speaker 6 (04:01):
A little bit, yeah, absolutely, And we said this off there.
Speaker 5 (04:05):
I believe they're trying to find that third safety, you know,
who is going to be that guy when it's dime situations,
third downs, not only to be that third safety, but
more specifically to play up top as that free safety
potentially in the deep part of the field, especially the
middle part of the field. So that I think is
something that they're still looking for. They probably just my
(04:26):
breed on it. Kyle Dugger and Jabrill Peppers, you know
what they're good at, and they're better closer to the
line of scrimmage, they're better playing in the box. They're
better when they're moving downhill instead of moving backwards. And
my guess is that they're trying to allow those guys
to do what they do best. But in order to
do that, they have to find a third safety who
(04:47):
can play the deep part of that field, you know,
Deron Harmon, Devin mccordy type roles. So I think they're
still looking for that, not that they don't have it,
but they're just still trying to figure out who that is.
Speaker 3 (04:57):
Yeah, the Kyle Dugger part of this is something I've
noticed since day of camp. When they go nickel or
you know, the multiple defensive backs. There have been a
lot of occasions where he's come out. So I didn't
really notice Pepper's getting nicked up at all today. So
you guys might be right about that, but I totally
agree with Evan's assessment. You got to find out what
the other guys can do. They need someone who sort
(05:18):
of profiles to that old Devin mccordy kind of style,
and you're going to find out if Hawkins can do it.
You're gonna find out if the rookie Craig Woodson can
do it.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
They got a lot of reps today. I did notice that.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
Tug a little housekeeping, Paul, you've been here longer than
Evan and I have, and I've never quite seen Morgan
Ramandre Stevenson weren't there for the start of practice. They
came in about halfway through, and then they hopped right
into the team drills.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
I was surprised.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
They're clearly they were trying to keep them fresher because
they might they probably both dealing with something because they
spent some time warming up with some trainers late. I
don't know if there's anything more to it than that,
but yeah, you're right. As soon as the first team
period came, they were both in there. A matter of fact,
I think Stevenson carried the ball on like the second
play and Morgan Moses was at left tackle to.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
Start the first team period. So yeah, it was a
little bit of an odd setup. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (06:05):
A couple other at right tackle, yeah, yeah, a couple
other pieces that It looked like Jilani Tobai left uh.
He experienced a calf injury during the spring which limited him.
Initially he was able to come off, but maybe a
setback for him today. He left, did not return. Carlton
Davis looked like he was rehaving as well. Seems like
he's on some kind of plan where they're you know,
(06:25):
day on, day off kind of thing.
Speaker 4 (06:27):
We'll see, we got a day off coming up. Pad's
coming up if he then.
Speaker 2 (06:30):
Is able to go.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
And lastly, no Jalen Polk, which continues to be a
little bit of a disappointment. He now missed this whole
first chunk of the first four practices, disappointing for.
Speaker 4 (06:38):
Him in his second season. Then he hasn't been able
to get going.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
It's going to be hard to play catch up.
Speaker 5 (06:42):
Yeah, So you don't want to look too much into
these early days of camp with Carlton Davis because Carlon
Dave's obviously going to be here and he's going to
contribute and play a big role. But it has given
us an opportunity, I suppose to see who are the
next men up at corner and Alex Austin and Marcus
Jones are definitely the two guys that have been playing
the most when Carlon Davis is and here Austin just
immediately goes into that outside cornerback spot opposite a Gonzalez
(07:05):
with with Marcus Jones in the slot and in those
three corner looks.
Speaker 6 (07:09):
So there's some intel there.
Speaker 5 (07:10):
But I also just think Carlton Davis is one of
those guys that has had some injuries in the past,
and they might look at it and say, these maintenance days,
as Mike Rabel described it the other day, maybe that's
what's best for him to try to keep him healthy
for the entire season. So maybe it will be a
one day on, one day off thing for Carlton Davis
in camp.
Speaker 4 (07:30):
So we just had a little bit of a kicker
period as well. Eight total kicks.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
We didn't double check these, I mean, this was from
our purse, but we had Borgalis two for four and
then we had Romo three for four and without what
you saw down below.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
So it was fun.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
There were some questions, I mean, and I'm not making
fun of anyone because it's kind of hard to really determine.
I had Borer Gallas three for four and I had
Romo four for four. I'm not telling you I'm right
and you're wrong. Did he definitely Borgyles definitely if he
missed two.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
I wouldn't be surprised. The first two very close.
Speaker 6 (08:00):
Yeah, So we had those two, the first one definitely,
and they.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
Will both go in sideway. I don't like that.
Speaker 3 (08:06):
I was I felt better the last two they were
more traditional with the height that you're looking for and
over end. So maybe he sort of got rid of
those jips that because I don't like the way that
some of those kicks came off his foot.
Speaker 4 (08:16):
That's what I said to Evan.
Speaker 1 (08:17):
I mean, the first two questionable at best, and then
that third one was a fifty yarder and he kind
of felt like he needed it and it did feel
like he hit that one, So you know, something to
keep an eye on these kicker competitions. You never know
quite how it's all going to come together. But we'll
see if he can turn it around next week. So guys,
anything else I'm missing. Of course, we're going to go
into pads on Monday.
Speaker 4 (08:36):
We all are excited for that for sure.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
This felt like a really good practice though, to set
that up the competition up tick. Both sides were punching back.
Both sides made plays. I think both are going to
go into Monday's practice saying hey, let's keep the total
petitive level.
Speaker 2 (08:50):
Totally agree with that.
Speaker 3 (08:50):
I have one final thing that I'll just say about
the receivers. You know we're talking all about, you know,
all the different competitions. I think to Mario Douglas has
had a really good start to camp, and I thought.
Speaker 2 (08:59):
Today was probably his best day.
Speaker 3 (09:01):
We're gonna everybody's gonna talk about the bomb, and that
was the play that stood out to me too. I'm
not telling you shouldn't be excited about a play like that,
but just some plays on the sideline, some plays, you know,
jumping up in traffic, sitting in some soft spots in
the zone. I just think he's been really active and
he's caught everything thrown his way to Mario Douglas has
been a very productive player for them, and that's what
(09:22):
a lot of people thought that he could be in
Josh mcdiniels's offense.
Speaker 5 (09:25):
Yeah, he looks looks the part and then some of
that slot receiver role. And I think there were some
doubts maybe by some people, if he exactly fit the
McDaniels prototype to play inside at a high volume in
a high volume targets guy with his body type. But
he's just looked fantastic. I mean it's not even just
that he's getting open. He's also making some incredible catches,
(09:46):
like acrobatic, you know, over his kind of what I'm.
Speaker 2 (09:49):
Talking about, things that would think could be in his
skill set.
Speaker 5 (09:52):
Yeah, and I think we actually posted one of those
from earlier in the week that you can see on
our social medias. But it's really, uh, that's what stood
out to me the most is you know, you can
get open. You know, he's got juice, he's got speed,
and you can separate. But his ball skills have been
tremendous in this camp so far as well. So he
always seems to have good camps because he's so fast
and shifty that when you can't get your hands on him,
(10:14):
it's really hard to cover him. But these feel real,
more real than some of those just little seven yard
in cuts and slants and things like that.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
We got room, Yeah, we got room where you know,
you know what when you see it's you know, it
looks the right way, it looks the right way.
Speaker 4 (10:30):
It's plenty of room at my bandwagon always.
Speaker 1 (10:32):
Well, that's going to wrap up this first what prologue
of practices, the helmet and shells version, and we're going
to get into Paths on Monday. If you're not able
to make it down here to Jillette Stadium, tune into
Patriots on Filter.
Speaker 4 (10:42):
We will be live during that padded.
Speaker 1 (10:44):
Practice and if you can't make it to that, we'll
have another Patriots Training Camp cast for you on Monday afternoon.
Speaker 4 (10:50):
Hey this is Deuce. Thanks for tuning into the show.
