Speaker 1 (00:00):
After three straight days and pads, the Patriots were back
to a walkthrough on Thursday. Still some takeaways, Let's break
it down. Welcome everybody to the Patriots training camp cast.
And yes, after three days of heat and pads today

(00:21):
a little cooler walk through pace. Still a lot of
work though team periods. You can see, Paul, they're kind
of set in the stage as they continue to build,
getting ready for the team drills, calling plays, you know,
the middle of the field, all that stuff. Seems like
that's where they're headed, getting the putting, putting it all together.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
And finishing it all up with a little two minute
drill at the very end. But to me, the big
takeaway is Mac Collins, you know, coming off pup and
being directly involved right from the start. Obviously a walkthrough,
so there's not really much of a ramp up period
for contact and whatnot. No pads, certainly no intensity. But
he was out there the first group, you know, out

(00:57):
at the X. You know you like that mic right,
I like the X right. So he was getting plenty
of reps. But yeah, good to see him back.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
Yeah, interesting player. I've mentioned a couple of times we
were out in Vegas when Josh was out there. We
watched him joint practices with him and he was very involved,
even with DeVante Adams and Hunter Renfro, So it seems
like Josh has a plan for him. I was a
little surprised too to see him hop right in. Otherwise
hard to really get a read on some of the returns.
I mean, Carlton Davis was back out there. We haven't
seen him since last walkthrough, so yeah, he's still working back,

(01:27):
but he did.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
Get reps in there. He was with Alex Austin a
lot and some of the stuff that they did, so
maybe he's a little bit closer to returning as well.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
I'd say one notable one though was Garrett Bradberry, who
missed yesterday and continues to test the center depth a
little bit. Ben Brown taking the top reps overall. But
otherwise you want to read too much into some of
these guys that we weren't out there. Some new tight
ends that they signed yesterday as well, so almost a
little bit of a reset day, and I would say
for us, Paul, a little bit of a reset day.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
Oh you guys got what you wanted. It wasn't you know?
Ninety five degrees and Sonny. You know, God forbid, it'd
be summer in the summertime. You know, we got it
down into the sixties and you know, with a with
a heavy breeze and you know, kind of uncomfortable. But
that's okay.

Speaker 1 (02:10):
You guys got it the way. You know, it was
nice not to be sweating through my nice to get
in here. And I feel like I have heatstroke. But Paul,
let's take this chance though, as it is a little
bit of a slower day, just to look back at
those three day three days of pads and you know,
maybe just a couple of players to you that that
have maybe stood out that you weren't expecting.

Speaker 2 (02:27):
Yeah, and it's something that you know, knowing it was
a walkthrough, I sort of gave that some thought. You know,
I think two receivers would would jump to the top
of my list of Mario Douglas and Kaisha on booty.
And it's kind of ironic because we just talked about
Holland's returning. He immediately jumped into the booty slot, So
I wonder if that's going to be something to keep
an eye on. I will say those two receivers would

(02:47):
would would top my list as guys that I thought
would been active. They've been a part of the first
group with the team in all the team periods, every day,
every period. So Booty I think would be more note
of those two, because I think most people felt like
Douglas would have an inside track on that slot position.
Interesting with matc Collins as well though, and Douglas said

(03:08):
this earlier in camp. Josh McDaniels shown him tape of
a lot of different guys, you know, playing this lot
different body types. Matt Collins is one of the guys
he showed in the slot. He'd moved to the slot
at times today in the walkthrough too, So I don't
think you'd just say exclusively it's Mac Collins on the outside.
I think Josh McDaniels probably wants to move him around

(03:29):
a little bit too. But those are two guys that
stood out to me.

Speaker 1 (03:31):
Yeah, Hollins has some length to which just makes him
stand out a little bit in that group. I know
you've been high on Caleb on Chase on as well.
We've mentioned him a little bit on PUP as well
as these camp casts. But going into the season, I
was concerned, how are these new edge guys going to
come in and fit in. Are they going to be
able to get some pressure? And so far Chason's been
really dynamic, got a lot of pressure. One other thing
I'll mention too, not even a player, but listening to

(03:52):
the Milton Williams yesterday talk about this new scheme a
lot different, I think than what we've seen from Bill
Belichick and those defenses of the past where there's a
lot of breaedom react. It seems like now the theme
of this defense is going to be attacking. Just not
a lot of sit there, try to figure out what
they're doing, seaball, get ball. I like that, especially for
guys like Williams Christian Barmo.

Speaker 2 (04:12):
It's kind of ironic because I like it too, and
I'm right with you. I always like to sort of
try to disrupt timing and not as much react. But
you know, on the flip side, I'm like Bill Belichick
is widely regarded as one of the defensive masterminds of
his time, and he's obviously had a lot of success
playing defense the way that you described. But I'm with you,

(04:32):
I'd rather go after the quarterback. I'd rather, you know,
be aggressive and if you get beat, you make the offense,
execute quickly at a high level as opposed to you know, methodically,
you know, paper cutting, you you know, on the way
down the field. So I'm excited to see what it
entails with Mike Rabel and Terrell Williams in this new

(04:52):
attacking kind of style. But all of the players, not
just Milton Williams, all of the players have talked about it,
and I am excited to see it.

Speaker 1 (04:59):
Yeah, Harold Land think he's he's going to be a
key piece there on the edge. He was back today,
got a veteran day of rest yesterday, Paul As we
look a little bit forward here. The team's going to
have the weekend off, but not before they're an in
stadium practice. A lot of speculation going on because we've
heard Mike Frabel said it's going to be a scrimmage
quote unquote, a little scrimmage with a stress on the
little We've seen this practice in the past where it's

(05:21):
really about getting the whole, like game day function down,
like here's where the tunnel we come out, this is
where we stand for the coin toss, this is where
we go at halftime. Also working for the coaches calling
plays in I said to Evan. When we were watching
practice today, I think Friday night's going to be maybe
this what we saw today, but increase the voltage by
about fifty percent, and then that's what I'm expecting tomorrow night.

Speaker 2 (05:43):
I wouldn't expect to see, you know, a rock em
soccer match, you know, a full scale scrimmage, but I
would expect to see the team's on the sidelines and
only eleven players on each side of the ball on
the field. Are as opposed to milling around like you
get during a regular practice, you know, pads, I would think,
But I'm not expecting to see tackling to the ground

(06:03):
or anything like that. You know, maybe a higher intensity
than we've seen in the in stadium practices in the
recent past, but you know, I wouldn't think by much.

Speaker 1 (06:13):
As we looked the next week, Paul, what are you
kind of looking for? We've seen now. I think it's
like seven practices in the bag. We'll have another one
tomorrow night. We'll have joint practice next week against the
Commanders on Wednesday. But I think the Patriots are going
to have another physical practice on Monday, walk through Tuesday,
and then they'll get into it with the Commanders. Without
getting to nitty gritty, I mean, I'm putting on spot,
But what are you kind of feeling as we get

(06:34):
into next week? What are you most curious about?

Speaker 2 (06:36):
Want to see? Yeah, I want to see these guys
starting to repeat the performances, you know some of the
you know, Alex Austin's another guy that I've been somewhat
impressed with through the first week. Can he, you know,
make it a second week? And you know, Bill Belichick
used to say all the time, it's it's much about
being able to practice consistently and being out there all
the time. And the attendance has been pretty good. We're

(06:57):
starting to get somewhere and tear right, who can get
back out in the practice field, who can stay on
the practice field. Those are the kinds of things I'll
be looking for on a Monday in particular, because you're right,
Tuesday will probably be a walk through and then before
you know it, Washington will be here.

Speaker 1 (07:10):
Yeah. Well that's going to do it for this PP
and Theduce edition of the Patriots Training Camp cast. But
we will be back tomorrow on Friday night, be a
late one. I think practices due to end about seven thirty,
So if you're looking for this next edition of the
Patriots Training Camp Cast. Be on the lookout late Friday night,
and we'll be right back at it next week.
