Speaker 1 (00:03):
This is the Patriots Training Camp Cast.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
The Patriots Training Camp Cast is your source for all
the news from Patriots training Camp.

Speaker 1 (00:14):
I do still watch the news. Practice is over, but
the writers of Patriots dot.

Speaker 3 (00:18):
Com have you covered? What did I miss yesterday?

Speaker 4 (00:20):
Now here to review today's practice the writers of Patriots
dot Com. All right, welcome into another edition of the
Patriots Training Camp Cast. This, of course the fourteenth practice, guys,
and it was a joint practice with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
Guys.

Speaker 4 (00:32):
I'm gonna start with just the scene setter. A positive
scene setter, great crowd, beautiful day, a lot of good
football being played, a lot of football.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
I think that's after keep going.

Speaker 4 (00:44):
But let's you know, let's let's get down to the
brass tacks of it all. Big picture for me, defense
pretty good today. Patriots offense had their struggles.

Speaker 3 (00:52):
Yeah, and I'll start with the defense because I know
Ev was more focused on on the other side. I
did think the front seven, in particular, I thought did
a good job sort of establishing the line of scrimmage
owning the line of scrimmage. There were some passes completed
for Philadelphia, but it seemed any time that they looked
like they were going to get into a rhythm. They
got some pressure on Jalen Hurts, So I did think
that that front was was pretty stout throughout the day.

(01:15):
The run stop, I thought Godshaw was mid season form.
I didn't think that they had much room to run.
So the front seven, I thought defensive was pretty good.
The second area I don't think was really good. But
you know, we'll get to some bookkeeping stuff. A lot
of guys missing back there, so you know, maybe to
be understand, you know, to be expected.

Speaker 4 (01:34):
How about that offense, Evan Uh, yeah, well he said
while talking, Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:39):
They played out there, no here.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
I think the biggest thing is to me is that
coming into this practice, you knew that there were some
clear matchups that favored the Eagles defense over the Patriots offense,
mainly looking at their defensive front against the Patriots offensive
line that we know is a work in progress, and
the Eagles got some dudes up there. I mean, we
got to all practice about it. Georgie Davis, Jalen Carter,

(02:01):
Nolan Smith, Bryce Huff coming over from the Jets. They
have one of the best defensive fronts in the NFL,
and that's exactly how it played out in practice, and
then I felt like at times there were some clean
pockets for Jacob ber said, and he wasn't exactly sharp
out there with his ball placement in accuracy. So it
was overall the Eagles definitely controlled the day when the

(02:22):
Patriots were on offense on the other field. But I
don't think it's alarmist necessarily, because what did you expect, Like,
I didn't come into this practice thinking that the Patriots
offense was going to go out there and light it up.

Speaker 1 (02:34):
So I wish it was a little bit cleaner.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
I'm sure that Paul will get to this a little
bit more than I can, But penalties situational stuff more
than carryover from what we saw yesterday. That's my biggest gripe.
It's one thing to not exactly be able to block
everybody up front when you're still figuring things out on
the offensive line. It's another thing to go offside, you know,
fall start here, fall start there, bad snaps like that

(03:00):
type of stuff has to be cleaned up.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
Yeah, that to me would be the biggest disappointment because
I think what Evan said is right. I mean, you're
sort of building an offense from the ground up and
you're playing against a team that from a talent perspective
is super Bowl caliber. Now they have some internal problems
that caused them to lose whatever it was six of
the last seven last year. So the Eagles are fighting
through some stuff. But it's not a talent issue. So

(03:22):
you expected there to be some fits and starts offensively,
but there's no reason to it. I think that we
counted nine offensive penalties. At least six of those were
pre snap ball on the ground, on fumbled snaps, ball
on the ground, you know, on a fake jet sweep.
You know that Brissette has to dive on the ball.
So there was just a lot of things that Austin

(03:43):
Hooper described early in camp as not requiring any talent
that right now this team is having a hard time executing.

Speaker 4 (03:49):
You mentioned Austin Hooper probably had to pick one guy
that kind of stood out and certainly was up and down,
you know, got open middle of field, downfield, Jacoby missed him.
I just want to provide a little context though, for
Drake May and his final series of a two minute drill,
and you know, everybody's wondering, Drake May, where's his reps?
And you know, I think he didn't know. I had
an okay practice earlier, but Evan, we got into that
final period and there was a lot of pressure on him.

(04:10):
It's hard to judge him off of what he's dealing
with out there.

Speaker 1 (04:12):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (04:12):
Absolutely. He started this practice nine for nine. Now, some
of that was seven on seven, but he made a
really good throw and seven on seven to Jayvon Baker
down the right sideline on a go route. It was
a nice play, and then he carried that over for
the first team period was things were okay and it
really went off the rails from there, And we don't
have the luxury of going back and watching practice film

(04:34):
and all that stuff, so it's always this like difficult
analysis of is it the quarterback.

Speaker 1 (04:39):
Is it the line? Is it the receivers? Like who's
that fault?

Speaker 2 (04:42):
For the fact that every single hurry up, it feels
like with Drake may is kind of a struggle. I
don't feel like he's been smooth through any of them,
even against his own teammates in practice, so some of
that has to fall on the QB. He said after
practice that he felt like he could have gotten the
ball out a little bit quicker and avoided those sacks.
You know, can't take a sack in a two minute

(05:03):
is what he said exactly. So he's been hard on
himself about it. But to your point, he had four
straight plays in the hurry up where they went four
and out. Three of them were sacks, and from our
vantage point, you guys can have a different opinion if
you do. It didn't feel like they had much of
a chance on the place. Like I'm not talking about
like he's sitting back there for three and a half
four seconds holding the ball, it's hit the top of

(05:25):
the drop and if the ball hadn't been out immediately.

Speaker 1 (05:28):
There was pressure in his face.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
And the third one or the fourth one, I should say
that was the one throw he got off Kishon booty
was blanketed and.

Speaker 1 (05:35):
There was really no place to go with the football.
So it was rough.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
If you look at the stat sheet, it's gonna say
zero for four with a four and out. And I'm
not trying to make excuses for him, but the whole
operation was rough, all eleven guys. And I should mention
that he's still working with the twos, so he's working
with the backup offensive line and then a mix of
receivers as well. But mostly just the backup offensive line

(05:59):
and that has problematic for him.

Speaker 4 (06:01):
Yeah, just to kind of focus on the defense a
little bit.

Speaker 1 (06:03):
To Paul, I thought they were better.

Speaker 4 (06:05):
Yeah, and I think, like, you know, look, we saw
what made Jalen Hurts and AJ Brown and DeVante Smith
so difficult. Of course, the team the individual drills, you
don't really get into those, but you know, you see
the connection that they had. There were multiple plays where
you felt like the Patriots were sending blitzes at them.
Jalen Hurts recognized it is able to you know, use
his mobility, get out and you know, throw a dime
to AJ Brown. Happened a couple of times. But it
felt like once the Patriots kind of moved down into

(06:27):
the low red zone you mentioned, the run defense kind
of picked up and it just seemed like their intensity
picked up a little bit and.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
They likes the physicality up front on the defensive side,
you know, on the left hand field. Today, I thought
Godshaw looked like he was his normal run stuffing, run
stuff ing sseelf. So that kind of stuff is encouraging,
I think, you know, because they're gonna have to replace
Christian Barmore. You know, you have Matthew Judon as a
pass rusher who knows, you know, how that whole scenario

(06:54):
is going to unfold. So I thought that was encouraging
that they were able to make life a little bit
difficult on the Eagle at times. And I do think
the physicality stood out. Your boy, Julia, I've almost called
him Julius Jabrill Peppers, you know again, I think was
a tone setter in that regard. Lane Johnson credited him
with that for the Eagles. So it wasn't like this

(07:15):
whole just wipeout of a day. I thought they got
a lot of competitive work in but offensively. Evan's right,
they got a long way to go.

Speaker 4 (07:21):
Yeah, same kind of issues, just some housekeeping stuff. At first,
we saw Marcus Jones and Jonathan Jones come out in pads.
I didn't see them participate at all, so maybe that
means they're ramping back up. We still think Jonathan Jones
probably could go if it was a regular season, but
otherwise no real returns of note. Hunter Henry did mispractice
as expected, so gave Austin Hooper a little bit of
a chance to do what he did today exactly.

Speaker 3 (07:43):
I thought he was the best weapon on offense. And
I know that probably sounds like we're damning with faint praise,
but yeah, Douglas.

Speaker 2 (07:49):
Either him or Pop who did get for you a
couple of times in Jacoby Brissett's two minute drill.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
But Hooper, some of it was good, some of it
was bad.

Speaker 2 (07:58):
You know, he had to drop up and then back
shoulder fade or seem I should say in the end
zone that I thought he caught and then all of
a sudden the Eagles were celebrating and they had the ball.
So it's like, yeah, one of those like tip drill situations.
But he was open. You know, he was getting open
and opened down the field as well. So whether it's

(08:18):
Hooper Henry when he's been healthy, I feel like Hunter
Henry's had opportunities as well. It does seem like this
offense in this system gets the tight end open quite
a bit. You know, David and Jok who had huge
years in this offense in Cleveland, So those opportunities are
going to be there. It's it's really the stuff up
front and then obviously the stuff on the outside that
they're still searching for.

Speaker 3 (08:39):
Best player in the field to me though, was was
aj Brown yeah, I thought he was a going concern
any anytime they didn't get pressure on Hurts, it seemed
like it was either either Brown or Smith making I
thought pretty routine catches.

Speaker 4 (08:52):
Yea, A trust is clear between Jalen Hurts and A. J.

Speaker 1 (08:54):
Brown.

Speaker 4 (08:54):
Well, I think this is going to do it for
the Patriots training camp cast. This is the last official
day of open practices. We're not sure that we'll be
other practices, not sure if we're going to get to
watch them all report on them. So for all intents
and purposes, this might be it for the last time
we really see the Patriots play. Behind the scenes. Of course,
big game on Thursday night, we'll be curious to see,
you know, Drake May's reps as you get some chance
with the ones on the offensive line. Give them a

(09:15):
little bit more time plenty to digest here over the
last couple weeks as the Patriots get ready to close
things out against the Eagles and then next weekend against
the Commanders.

Speaker 1 (09:23):
