but the writers of Patriots dot com have you covered?
Speaker 3 (00:20):
What did I miss yesterday?
Speaker 4 (00:21):
Now here to review today's practice?
Speaker 1 (00:23):
The writers of Patriots dot Com.
Speaker 5 (00:25):
All right, welcome into another edition of the Patriots Training
Camp Cast. I'm Mike do So, joined by Paul Perillo
and Tamara Brown, and we are literally right off the field.
We haven't even compared notes. Paul, I don't even know
what you thought of this practice today.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
So I mean, this could go anywhere.
Speaker 4 (00:37):
I have no idea what you guys, So let's dive in.
Speaker 5 (00:40):
I mean, we know there's a game in a couple
of days, and I, you know, I felt it was
a little bit dial back in places. There was you know,
there were some plays made here and there, some of
them like out of bounds maybe that were kind of whoa.
But otherwise I didn't really feel that great about this practice.
It felt kind of like slogging. And you know, again
like you've talked a lot, Paul about the the rhythm
of it, and it just it felt plotting a lot
of the times, and there were some big plays that
(01:01):
we'll get into that were that were kind of nice
and encouraging. But overall, I just felt like, this feels
like a couple of days before a game.
Speaker 3 (01:06):
Yeah, And I thought because they were so physical yesterday,
I felt like they dialed it back a little bit.
It was much more passing today than yesterday. And I
thought there was some moments here or there. You know,
I think there were times when you see Drake May
get in a rhythm, and generally those are seven on seven's,
not not the full team, but you see it, you
(01:27):
see some of the things that people are excited about.
Still a work in progress, but yeah, there were some
outstanding catches made today. Whether or not they were all,
you know, all in about, I think most of them were.
There was one toward the end that I'm pretty sure
was out of bounds, but like, there was a couple
of really really nice catches, athletic plays made during the
course of the day. And again, I thought the defense
(01:48):
more often than not was in control. Yeah, we'll get
into it stood out too.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
Yeah, what's up to me? And I hate to be
a little bit nitpicky. Here was Drake May in the
situational periods. I think he's still a bit bumpy there,
kind of a roller coaster especially, you know, I think
it was like under a minute, fifty eight seconds whatever
it was, But the supporting cast didn't help him. There
were a lot of drops. There's a bad snap, So
I don't want to blame it all on him, but
those seemed to be the areas where he can have
(02:14):
some growth. And obviously the preseason game coming up have
plenty of opportunities to get reps. But he is showing
flashes throughout practice that good to see.
Speaker 5 (02:21):
Yeah, well, let's let's highlight some of these stories that
we're talking about. I mean, seven on seven May with
a couple I just I wrote dimes it to Booty
and to our friend. We haven't really seen jahean Bell
a couple of nice throws. Again, kind of hard from
my vantage point.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
To see if I gave him a touchdown because the
first time I've noticed jehem Bell in camp, so I
figured out they give me an opportunity to strow write
about him. But yeah, I know exactly the play you're
talking about came right at us in the the know
what all tents, and I agree with Samara's assessment of
the of the hurry up. The two minute drill is
continuing to me to be sort of plotting for both
both quarterbacks. And there was one play, you know, I'm
(02:56):
trying to find. I think it was with Brissett. You know,
they had a fourth down and they complete a pretty
sizable seam route to kJ Osborne and Osbo just keeps
running and I'm like running, like there needs to be
a situational awareness in that kind of a you know, spot,
And I thought that you get the first down, there's
no time to celebrate. I think they ended up resetting
(03:18):
the clock where he would have been sort of stopped.
So like like like you said, it wasn't like it
was without any plays at all. Offensively. There were some
plays made, just not enough of them. And I do
think Tamara mentioned a snap issue. I think that the
rain today in Foxboro casts some problems handling the ball.
I thought the long snapping we should add that Tucker
(03:39):
Addington was was added to the roster. His snaps were
a little erratic today. I thought they had some hard
time and there was a fumble I think by Kevin Harris.
There was a couple of fumbled exchanges involving the quarterbacks
and some guys on jet sweep. So I thought the
rain created some adversity.
Speaker 5 (03:57):
Today, Let's keep building off of that because Javon Baker
had which this is a crazy catch, I mean and
back and when that's the one?
Speaker 4 (04:03):
Was that the one you were talking about in on
that one? It couldn't tell, but yeah it was.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
It was parab completely parallel to the ground. He makes
that diving catch, then he drops like three us.
Speaker 5 (04:11):
You know, it's just like, yeah, that was and that
was you talked about samaraw with Drake May where Drake
fired I think a couple passes that you know in
his area. It's hard to say, but you could tell
the wet ball was definitely coming into it.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
It's strange because it's like those diving acrobatic catches. You
see his catch radius and his strong hands and Javon Baker,
but then it's something with the short passes that he
drops them. And I will say a lot of the
passes were behind him. There were a few moments where
I know Fred brought up next to me a bunch
of times, like why is he throwing the ball behind
the guy? Yeah? But still you.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
Got to credit the quarterback guru.
Speaker 4 (04:43):
Yeah, good observations.
Speaker 5 (04:44):
And I mean, of course, the team has a game
coming up, so I just noticed a lot of rotation.
Speaker 4 (04:48):
There were you know, kind of maybe a little bit more.
Speaker 5 (04:49):
We talked a lot about the rotation, Paul, but like
even along the offensive line, there were, you know, some
guys working in a little bit.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
Yeah, I'm glad you brought that up.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
City.
Speaker 3 (04:56):
So looked like he was at his normal spot at
left guard during the war through period at the beginning
of practice. Then when they went team it was Michael Jordan,
not that one and not the actor, this Michael Jordan.
He and I thought he actually looked pretty good. I
thought on the move some of those zone plays that
Evan talks about all the time.
Speaker 4 (05:14):
I thought he was leading.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
On a Kevin Harris sort of off tackle play on
an inside zone. I thought he got out and made
a kicked out, made a big block to remove Jelani
Tavai out of the hole, which was was one of
the rare running plays that I thought looked like it
had some positive yardage. So something to keep an eye
on there. Venerian low continues just like five days in
a row now, at left tackle for low Calvin Anderson
(05:38):
back at right tackle. So you know, it's two days
in a row, kind of the same group at the beginning,
you know, and then Jordan mixing in. So we'll see
how that goes Thursday. But to me, the big takeaway
was Drod Mayo saying that, you know, everybody who's healthy
is going to play Thursday night in the preseason opener.
Speaker 5 (05:53):
Yeah, Kate Wallace who kind of banged up during practice,
got looked at, did go back to back, but you know, again,
and we had a similar situation with Calvin Anderson earlier
in the week.
Speaker 4 (06:02):
They're very banged up.
Speaker 5 (06:03):
They went out, they signed another left tackle this week,
but you know, otherwise, you just wonder how they're going
to go into this game with kind of the tackles.
I mean, it's an uncertain situation even with everyone healthy,
and now with a couple guys banged up, you're kind
of limited a quarters four again just watch, so really
some attrition there at tackle is kind of building up
to Marrow. It makes me wonder, you know, how you're
gonna juggle it when you get into this preseason game
(06:24):
where you're gonna have guys like Zuri Henry, you know,
playing extensive snaps.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
I think it's going to make it tough to get
a good assessment of Drake may especially because we've only
seen him in practice with like the second string type
of guys. But if you keep getting thin because of
these injuries, then it's like those guys are going to
end up playing with Jacoby Brissett too. So I think
it's going to be tough to assess the quarterback play
when the offensive line is still bad.
Speaker 5 (06:46):
Yeah, And I mean I did think they had some
periods today where there were you know, pretty good protection
for Presette, but not a lot you know, just not
a lot of continuity, not able to really stack drives.
I think that's what I'm most interested to see with
that Jacoby Brissette offense. Can they stack a drive, you know,
in real time? And it's not make a play stop
all right? He said, you know, it's just you never
felt that real kind of game scenario yet in practice, and.
Speaker 3 (07:05):
Whenever they do sort of get in the rhythm. To me,
it's all the short, quick throws. It's little hooks, it's curls,
it's slants. There's nothing that's you know, takes any time
to develop, so you know some of those deep overs
that you know, you see the crossing routes that that
you know that that that a VP system is supposed
to be about. We haven't really seen a lot of
that yet.
Speaker 4 (07:25):
Yeah, let's wrap up with some housekeeping notes.
Speaker 5 (07:27):
I mean twenty four Josh Bledsoe back in uniform, so
a little boost there to the safety group. Marcus Jones
remains out. The rest of the group that that has
been out remains out. Marte Mapu among others. Matthew Judahm
we got to you know, was out there initially, not
in pads today, looked like he just had shells to me,
did not have a helmet, disappeared for a portion after stretching,
(07:48):
reappeared on the sidelines, not really participating.
Speaker 4 (07:50):
To me, this felt again like a little bit of
a shift.
Speaker 5 (07:53):
He's been out there, he's been participating, been a good
you know, the good the you know, the good employee kind.
Speaker 3 (07:58):
Of We heard from him yesterday and sound like a
guy with that was overly pleased and yeah, he spent
some time talking to joke him and the outside linebackers.
Coach Wilkins Drewe.
Speaker 4 (08:09):
Drew Wilkins ye from ball was close.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
Yeah, spent a lot of time talking to those guys
did not have pads on today, did not take part.
Speaker 2 (08:16):
It's definitely very misleading when you listen to him in
his press conference yesterday and then you see him out
of practice. He obviously sounds like he is going to play,
but maybe that means hey, I'm just going to play
in the games and practice.
Speaker 1 (08:26):
When I want to.
Speaker 4 (08:27):
Yeah, well, this is it, folks.
