Speaker 1 (00:00):
We were fresh off the fields from behind Jellette Stadium
where the Patriots and Commanders got into it for almost
two hours in a joint practice.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Let's break it all.
Speaker 1 (00:06):
Down, Patriots training camp, cast and guys. I might say
this is the ultimate show of the summer, the joint
practice wrap up. There was a ton going on in
the field. Hard to take it all in. Paul, I
talked to you right after practice. We both felt a
little over overwhelmed.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
But I do think right next to overwhelmed is very encouraged,
very optimistic. I thought there was a lot of good competition.
I know, that's the cliche, that's what all the players thought.
It was good to be good to be in a
competitive environment. We got a couple of scraps. Mike Rabel
was part of those scraps, but back and forth. I
thought there was some periods where the Patriots looked really good,
some periods not so good. I think that's what you're
(00:48):
looking to see. Much much different case from last year,
So I think a lot to be optimistic about.
Speaker 4 (00:54):
I agree, Yeah, that was my number one takeaway.
Speaker 5 (00:56):
It was it was a lot different than the Eagles
joint practice that we had that we keep bringing up
that's the bar of let's not go with that in
that direction. And the Patriots offensively, DUSA had his eyes
mostly on the defense, so times the offense a little bit.
I thought Drake may for ninety nine point nine percent
of this practice was really good. The end we'll get
(01:16):
to it wasn't a great ending for the offense, but
the optimistic view is that Drake looked like he was
in rhythm. Him and Pob Douglas early was a connection
that the commander simply just could not stop. And then
the offensive line I thought held its own. I thought
it was okay, was a dominant no, but it was
more than okay. Nothing like that Eagles practice last year.
(01:37):
Will Campbell seemed to fare pretty well. Jared Wilson fared
pretty well. So I come out of this practice feeling
like the Patriots showed well overall. I know, we get
into who won the practice and all that good stuff.
I just think it was a good positive day and
a good step forward.
Speaker 1 (01:52):
Yeah, I mean I felt similar about the defense. I
thought Washington had a pretty good start right out of
the gate, where you saw Jayden Daniels hitting some quick
passes to Zacher.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
But I felt like it got progressively.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
Better as I watched, and I mean this the second
and last possession where they ran a couple of read
options which they just felt like they covered well.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
They ran well. There was one run by the number eight.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
They're they're running back Robinson, Robinson who they got the
edge on one of them and it looked like he
was gone.
Speaker 2 (02:17):
So there were some moments, but felt like they were
ninety two.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
Those two guys Harold Landry, Christian Barmore in the backfield
a lot tonga, real tough up front, Robert Splaine getting
a hand on a ball, punching that up in the air,
making some plays on the ball. So just competitive and
again i'll highlight I don't want to jump right to
Alex Austin at the end, but the competitive team portion
right at the end, forty five seconds from the twenty
five yard line, got to punch it in. Came down
to the end, fourth down play, another Alex Austin.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
Come up with.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
That series was excellent. I thought both defenses did well
in that final series. To Evans's point, that was the
one point one percent that he wasn't thrilled with. Drake
may I would agree, and I thought the pass rush.
I thought the coverage was a little leaky. I thought,
you know, at times, Mike watched definitely more of the defense,
so I would go with his assessment over mine because
(03:05):
I was just sort of head on a swivel watching,
trying to take it all in. But I definitely noticed
barmore in the backfield. I noticed, even with some of
the secondary groups, some different numbers Joshua Farmer, Elijah Ponder,
guys you know, showing up in the backfield that we
hadn't really seen a lot of. So the word today
that I keep coming back to was competitive. They were
(03:25):
far more competitive than we've seen in the recent past.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
Just a highlight, real quick Ivan Joshua Farmer, he stood
out to me. He was a guy that is really surging,
a little bit banged up earlier in camp, coming on
getting some quality reps the last couple of days, and
then today it seemed like a translated so that rookie
providing some good depth on the defensive line.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
I'm glad you shout at him out.
Speaker 4 (03:43):
Yeah me too.
Speaker 5 (03:43):
We both talked about Farmer getting in the backfield a
few times today and I agree with do so maybe
a little bit of a slow star for him health
wise in training camp wasn't always out there to start camp.
Speaker 4 (03:54):
But hopefully he's coming on.
Speaker 5 (03:56):
And that's another rookie that you can add into Campbell
and Henderson and Wilson and Williams and now Farmer. Like,
if you get some of these rookies and you get
four or five guys that can all at least be
a rotational player for you, that's a good draft class
out of the shoot so far. But I'll go back
to Drake because I just want to reiterate. I just
thought he was great for the majority of this practice.
(04:17):
He had one stretch where he hit Pop Douglas on
a little shallow cross or the beginning of practice. Pop
Douglas was like unguardable. They couldn't get their hands on him.
And he hit a little shallow crosser where Pop got
some open field, you know, he had some open grass
in front of him. A nice explosive play. Then Drake
had a little side up, stepping up off platform throw
(04:38):
with some pressure to Pop Douglas on a crossing route
and then he hit Austin Hooper up the scene for
a completion in sequential order, like three plays right in
a row. Boom, boom, boom, and I thought he was
really sharp. And with Drake, when you start to get
into you know, he's pumping guys off and he's looking
guys off and he's moving around like that's.
Speaker 4 (04:56):
When you can tell that he's feeling it a little bit.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
And he said it after the you start to get
a little bit of a rhythm, you could see.
Speaker 4 (05:02):
It absolutely, and I felt like that was a really
good stretch for him.
Speaker 1 (05:05):
Kishan Boodie as well, I think I'm watching a really
nice shoulder on the sideline.
Speaker 3 (05:10):
I think he's really good at that play. I think
he just has good, good body control, good footwork, which
is so funny because the first thing everybody remembers about
him is not getting that second foot in bounds in
his first ever game in the NFL. And I think
he's done a really good job of that.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
One other play, just to highlight with the twos, when
they got up in that twenty five yard line in
first play from scrimmage, Josh Jobs Josh Dobbs drops back
throws one right in the bucket to mac Hollins. Great catch,
one play, one touchdown and they're right off the field.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
That was nice, nice showing from the two.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
Which made my pre practice prediction or actually assertion that
Joshua Dobbs I think has come on a little bit.
That was the throw of the day.
Speaker 5 (05:45):
Yeah, beautiful, and Mac Collins coming on a little bit too,
Dus pumping him up in the free game and I
felt like he had I want to say, three or
four catches in team from both quarterbacks and with Drake
a nice hole shot in the cover two hole along
this sideline out with anticipation that he hit him on
and then he had the big one from Dobbs. So
playing a lot today, Diggs was limited in and out
(06:08):
a little bit during team drills, so Matt Collins got
quite a bit of run and this was the most
noticeable practice for him as well.
Speaker 4 (06:16):
So he was definitely on the on the standouts or
the positive side.
Speaker 1 (06:19):
Okay, so let's talk about that last play from Drake,
because last couple practices I've mentioned in stadium, we saw
Drake throw an interception to Alex Austin to end that practice.
Competitive periods on Monday, similar kind of results, not quite
finishing strong.
Speaker 2 (06:33):
That was one of my keys today coming in.
Speaker 1 (06:35):
They come in for their forty five seconds from the
twenty five He's completion to Hunter Henry.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
A completion de Booty just misses diggs On trying to
throw the fade, and then a tipball.
Speaker 1 (06:44):
Interception, which you know, Drake said, these are the things
that will happen Bobby Wagner. But you know, still, for me,
it's just that's a third day in a row where
we've seen them kind of sputter a little bit at
the end, and I don't want to take away from
the great practice that they had, and they punched back
a lot, but that's the one that leaves the taste
in your mouth at the end of this practice.
Speaker 3 (06:59):
Yeah, I mean, it's unfortunate. And I think back to
something Evan said when we had the you know, the
show before the practice about how hard it is to
sort of look at it at practice because you just
go in live. That's a play that the interception is
a player. I want to see sort of from the backside,
kind of see what Drake was looking at. He talked
about he gave a lot of credit to Bobby Wagner,
(07:20):
you know, for having good eyes on the play. I
think he said he tried to put a little extra
zip on it to get it through and wasn't able
to do. But I'd like to see it and say like, well,
should you have been trying to do that or should
you have gone somewhere else, Because there's no question that
I felt that Pop had a step on Mike Sandras
still and would have been a touchdown had had the
ball not been deflected. So it might be a mental error,
(07:42):
it might be a physical mistake. You know, we don't
know if you don't get a chance to see it
in a couple of different ways.
Speaker 5 (07:47):
Yeah, May said after practice that he probably should have
moved Bobby Wagner with his eyes a little bit more,
held him in the middle of the field. Looked like
Wagner dropped out and was like a free player, just
like a spy or a robber, just sitting in the
middle of the field where Drake's eyes and Pop separated
so quickly on the slant that I think Drake just
immediately went to the slant and it brought Bobby Wagner
(08:08):
to the party and he just tipped it up in
the air in the passing lane and Sandra is still
caught the tip pass So right, look like a right idea,
but with a veteran heady player like Bobby Wagner. You
have to maybe give him a little quick look off first,
or you start left and then go right. Just try
to move him with your eyes in some way, shape
or form to open up that passing window. It's also
(08:31):
possible he just didn't see him, which sometimes happens to
dropping out of the rush and you just don't see him.
So that was, like I said, you could put up
nine ten great throws from Drake today and then that's
the one blemish towards the end of practice.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
Anybody else did you guys saw standard.
Speaker 1 (08:48):
I just wanted to mention Travon Henderson, who every now
and then I was looking over at the offensive sideline
out side of the ball, and I would you see
some nice runs by him. I also saw a drop
which was a great throw by Drake in the end zone.
Speaker 2 (08:58):
I mean dropping the bucket.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
You could tell hendersons are trying to find it, couldn't
quite hang onto it.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
But you know, Henderson continues just to show up with his.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
Tough day for him catching the ball. He had a
couple of drops, but I would look at it on
the positive side of saying these are the these are
kinds of plays that I think he's going to be
able to make catching the ball. It happens now you
end up dropping passes all the time. That becomes a problem.
But to me, the bigger thing is the execution in
the red zone and getting open the way he did
(09:28):
on that little fade, little little wheel in the end zone,
he was wide open. Again. I don't think the linebacker
is going to be able to handle him.
Speaker 1 (09:35):
No. One other thing I should point out it seemed
like he instigated a little bit of a fight with
some of his pass blocking, which of course we've talked
about all spring. Tre Van Henderson coming in with pass
blocking sounded like the Commanders took maybe a little exception
to some of his pass blocking.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
Yeah, little scrum broke out.
Speaker 4 (09:48):
Yeah, not to be the football guy here.
Speaker 5 (09:50):
Everybody's talking about Mike Rabel getting in the scrum trying
to break it up. But the thing that stood out
to me is that Henderson put the blitzer on his
butt and that's what started the d tire thing. And
that's what we wanted to see out of him at
such a standout trait of his game from college and
to see it translating into the pros is a really
good sign just for his ability to play on third down,
(10:11):
because when you get into the NFL, you see the
blitz looks that these NFL defenses are going to send
your way compared to the college game. That's why a
lot of rookie running backs don't play in the passing
game early on in their careers. So if Henderson can
hold up in pass pro, then you can put them
on the field in those types of situations. So that
stood out to me. His speed always stands out. But
a couple of other things, just on the offensive line.
(10:33):
You know, Marcus Bryant continues to get some work at
ride tackle. No Morgan Moses today, so it was split
between Trey Jacobs and Marcus Bryant, And at this point
I would give maybe a little bit of an edge
to Marcus Bryant. I think he took yeah, yeah, I
think he might have fared better. And then there was
one period where Ben Brown took center reps over Garrett Bradbury.
(10:55):
I don't know if that was performance related, injury related,
who the hell knows, but he did do it, so
that's worth noting as well. So there's some different shuffling
there on the offensive line.
Speaker 4 (11:06):
But for the most part.
Speaker 5 (11:07):
You saw that same group of Campbell, Wilson, Bradbury on
WNU and then the rotating right.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
Yeah, all right, well, great stuff, a lot of fun
out there on the fields today.
Speaker 2 (11:17):
Be sure to check out.
Speaker 1 (11:17):
We'll all be writing a little bit more, dive into
some more of the details of this practice. As we said,
plenty to see and of course, the first preseason game
of the summer is going to kick off Friday night
here at Gillette Stadium against the Commanders, so be sure
to tune in early six pm. Will be the Tom
Brady statue unveiling, then Paul and I for the pregame show.
We'll be right on the tail of that as well,
take you right into the game and get you ready
for that. As for practice and the camp cast will
(11:39):
be back on Sunday for the last Patriots training camp
practice of the.
Speaker 2 (11:43):
Summer, so we'll see you then. But first we'll see
on Friday night for the first preseason game against the Commanders.
