Speaker 1 (00:00):
From grassroots to gold medals. It's Wellington's Fall Sport Breakfast
with Adam Huber Rutherford and Bomb Toyota and King Toyota
on news Talks. Bo Pass eight are on the old
Sport Breakfast Golf coming up with Steve where short Lee.
Let's talk in PC rugby though, and as we just
talked about with Piney, the Wellington Lions looking to bounce
back from the shield defeat Tasman last weekend when hosting
(00:21):
Bay of Plenty this afternoon at sky Stadium. Great family
friendly kickoff time three thirty five. The sun's out already
as you can see if you're in the city this morning,
so perfect to get along and support the Lion so
well aside from last weekend to track Hi pretty well
in the NPC competition. Obviously they are without their main
captain at the moment Dupla c KDP, but standing in
as skipper is Peter Umunger Jensen. I popped along to
(00:44):
the team training run yesterday at sky Stadium and spoke
to stand in skipper Peter Humunger Jensen or Peter I guess.
Pretty disappointing result last weekend. You could see that postgame
can you tell us how you've kind of had to
sort of regroup this week and move past there that
disappointment from Blenham.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
Yeah, they're going to uh from that weekend. But I
guess it was just it was all the all our
own things that we kind of got wrong in the
in the game and kind of the basics that, yeah,
that we didn't do right. And I think we've had
a real good energy and intend to put more Efism
in our basics and stuff. So it's been really good,
really really good week kind of preparing that and keeping
(01:19):
their energy and their tent and their basic stuff.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
So as captain, how have you sort of managed to
sort of deal with that. I guess you'd take a
little bit of extra responsibility and making sure everyone moves on.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
Oh yeah, I think it's just to make them. I
guess it's kind of kind of listening to the guys
that we I guess we're going so well in the
in this woman and in the competition and then have
a loss like that can really hurt you guys, and
to have that early on and can really help us
wolf the feedings and that sort of in that sort
of sense. So I think it's going a couple of
(01:50):
players called the young boys in here. Having makes the
experienced that so it was kind of good for them.
And yeah, just kind of build on that and make it,
make sure we did in the next next game.
Speaker 1 (01:59):
So look for effect down there the atmosphere wise, can
you tell us what the noise was like, what the
occasion was like, the sun was shining, and what was
it like to be in the middle.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
Yeah, no, it's unreal.
Speaker 1 (02:06):
It was.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
It's good for it's good for the I guess the
province and Tasman has been the first home.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
It's good.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
It's just good community rugby and I guess the atmosphere
is really really good and probably more positive on this side,
but not. It's just it's just great to see in
rugby and great like a Renfilly shield getting and actually
did it and actually bring the community together, and it's
it's just positive and in that sense.
Speaker 1 (02:28):
Quite special, isn't it. The Brainfilly shield just seems to
bring it, bring out the passion. Is that sort of
you know, like clearly for you guys, it was a
big deal.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
Yeah, no, it was when we had the when we
knew we had a chance, it was kind of like
another test manage coming for us, and I guess some
of these boys won't be able to hopefully not get
to experience that kind of atmosphere, So it was just
good for us and good for I guess the Union
to have that as well.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
So yeah, and just like talking about the leadership stuff before,
but you're obviously unexpectedly taking on the captain see with
how have you found it sort of froze and cons
of adapting to your game as well as taking on
the leadership.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
Yeah, in the I guess the speaking part and that stuff.
I'm not really much of a speaker, but I like
to kind of leave my actions and even that and
that sense, I'm not They're quite good, but I guess
it's just a learning. It's just the experience with this job.
Been here a long time, so I kind of know
what to do and what not to do. So it's
kind of just making that and making that apparent to
(03:21):
these boys what it's like. And it's good to have
like Jackson and Breshheels and there in the sense that
they've been leading the team and met Proctor as well.
So it's good to hear those guys and help me
out as well.
Speaker 1 (03:31):
Not as to have Riley back in the midfield this
week as well.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
Oh yeah, he's he's doing really well. I'm taking my
position as well. So no, he just keeps seeing a
bed every year. So hopefully another good game from him
this week. And yeah, you.
Speaker 1 (03:46):
Mentioned there a few things that work your own doing well.
What other stuff you've tried to address this week? You've
had a sort of nearly four week to get things,
get things hopefully on the right track for bad plenty.
Speaker 2 (03:53):
Yeah, I think it's just more like a carry a
carry mindset, making sure we're dominan in the area and
stuff they were really good and the defense and making
sure we're physical and just kind of keeping on the
pros and there, and then just to kind of energy
and effort around the round the field, kind of keeping
that up. And even though it's quite late in the season,
boys are tired and boys of bodies are sare, so
(04:14):
it's trying to get them positive and keep them moving to.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
A lot of energy around. How's everyone shaped up those
sort of you know, you mentioned that it's been a
long year, especially Super Rugby and all all that. How
do you make sure you're sort of not letting that
get to you at this point of the season when
they're still a title to be one.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
I guess we're quite quite privileged in the area with eCos.
We got amazing for recovery recovery facilities and we make
sure we utilize them and and we're also put on
the boys that the recovery is a really big thing
and make sure that we're on top of that stuff
and making sure that we're getting through our books and
any kind of little things that we're just giving on
top of kind of being appearance to these young boys.
(04:51):
So yeah, it's kind of just normal with professional rugby
and kind of getting these new guys, these club guys,
and to make it like that's a they could be
their job and that's what that's what I stick.
Speaker 1 (05:02):
And Bay of Plenty and tell us what you've made
have been this season. It's always seems to be able
to have a Wellington connection with the op whether it's
in coaching like this year or not. What are you
kind of expecting them to bring to sky Stadium?
Speaker 2 (05:11):
Oh No, they've been playing really well the rugby. They've
only had a couple of losses, but playing really good rugby.
They've had a team there. I guess a couple of
years been molding and they're really showing that the true
colors this this I guess the season. And yeah, like
you said, and Richard, what I'm wing to man for
NICKI man, it's good to see him. He'll be good
to see him come down and get to rusts shoulders
(05:32):
to him. But yeah, no, it's always I guess the
I guess this game is kind of always always up
and down. And I think after coming from this loss
and the weekend, and we're kind of really looking forward
to it to really I guess, hone into the things
that we need to work on and hopefully show it
up there and give a showcase for the for the
fans and stadium.
Speaker 1 (05:51):
And I've seen on the stadium just finally, I'm back
at sky Stadium a few games of Potty Door, which
it seems like you guys really enjoyed. What's the sort
of dynamic change coming to your second home? Is that
what we call it now? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (06:02):
Oh, I guess the only kind of main difference is
probably the field, the faster but flatter, not the huge
amount in the middle, but I guess, and and that
seems it's also quite bigger. Don't get to see be
as close to the I guess the crowd in the
in the community sence. So there's always present concert coming
here and and also Putty Dolls, so but we're looking
(06:22):
forward to it. A couple of Boys club boys first
time playing on here and expecially for playing for the
line to be kind of special for them. And yeah,
it's always good here. It's nice. I like the field,
so it's good.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
