Speaker 1 (00:00):
We're going to chat to former All Black Peter Latini,
and when you look at Blederslow Cup Tests and Wellington,
of course I can't really go without the iconic Test
match and series in the year two thousand. Of course,
it was the very first All Blacks match played at
then the new Westpac Trust Stadium. The All Blacks and
Wallabies had come off the back of a thriller over

(00:21):
in Sydney, the Jonah Loomu winning try that saw the
All Blacks win thirty nine thirty four. The return Test
in Wellington with the Bleederslow Cup on the line, John
Eels getting that final minute well, I guess you could
say stoppage time penalty goal to win the game for
the Wallabies and twenty four to twenty three was the

(00:42):
score and the very first Blederslow Cup Test in Wellington.
Well Peter Alertini was a starting midfielder and both those
tests in the year two thousand, so you of course
scored a try and that early little flurry of tries
in the first Test in Sydney, and Peter joins us
now looking ahead to this game. Thanks so much for
your time, Peter, Good morning to you, a beautiful day

(01:03):
and Wellington set for this test. I guess when you
look at the rivalry that the All Blacks and Wallaby's
had back then, how close is it to being replicated
over the next few years do you think based on
what we saw from both teams last weekend?

Speaker 2 (01:17):
It's if I suppose last week was a classic example,
eh when the Wall of the everyone felt that they
were dead and dust, but obviously through some mistakes and
opportunities they got they had the world to fight back
and unfortunately didn't get over the line. But fortunately for
us that we got it. But you know, it's really important.

(01:39):
It's got a lot of history. But more than that
may like it's you're playing your neighbors and you're just
you know, from a young age, as you go up,
you know where Australia is, so you always have that
awesome rivaly where you want to get one up. And
then more importantly when you get to the bladders, the
carpets around the history and those before you, So there

(01:59):
is a lot of meaning behind it. And then a
lot of the boys do enjoy playing a Bletters Cup tests.

Speaker 1 (02:06):
Yeah, exactly. So on the back of last week, obviously
it wasn't always pretty and in the last twenty minutes
gave everyone a little bit of a fright, What what
wire the all blacks that are take out from that
and what to sort of rectify this weekend?

Speaker 2 (02:16):
Do you think I think it's I think they'd be
spunk in obviously after the South Aska tests where they
went so close. It's it's just around continuing the momentum
that they built, especially in the first half and and
and it comes from pretty much the mistakes they make,
you know, the discipline to be strong and discipline, and

(02:37):
then those opportunities that they create, and they did a
few last week, it's to finish them. And I think
those are those are key when you're when you're playing
blitters low because I fortunately up in a couple where
we thought we had it and then got done the
other way around. So so it's just very kind of
posing off and hoping that the players that do come

(02:59):
through in the second as we speak, and will actually
understand the role and gave it to to just put
it able to the game and finish it.

Speaker 1 (03:10):
What difference will Boden Barrot at ten and Antel Lnett
Brown at twelve bring to this team?

Speaker 2 (03:16):
Do you think then they will bring a different skills.
So we we we've seen both these players are very
experienced and what they have and and I thought, when
when how each came through last week, is he's really
impressive in the work that he does and in terms
of gain line, in terms of being able to link.
And I think that the key, I suppose before Body

(03:38):
is just stearing the ship steadily and consistently throughout the
whole game. But a little bit for then, but obviously
he's he's a crack at it, and we'll come off
the bench and still have an opportunity. But I think
for Body will be just thearing the ship that we
know that he can at teen and then and then
really you know, for me, it's like the outsides are
our key around this. How do we how do we

(04:00):
create more time and space for them out wide to
finish because we know this wrong finishers. We just need
to how do we have to manipulate the medal to
create space for the outsides.

Speaker 1 (04:09):
And interesting those Damien McKenzie on the bench and arguably
that the last twenty minutes is one of the most
crucial periods the team's looking at this week, so it
all could be on him.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
Again, right and maybe it's the time when it gets
you know, when the ball gets you know, because are
tired as a femal camps. It's a bit more looseid
defenses as lot as tight as at at the beginning,
which you know, we all know how dangerous Stamen is
when when when there's unstructured play and he comes into

(04:37):
the forefront, then the unpredictable playing. But what the high
school said, maybe the guy that does turn it on
for us and in that last twenty to really put
the game beyond reach when it matters Australia.

Speaker 1 (04:50):
Will they be encouraged by how close they got last
week or do you think disappointed that they could and
quite get there at the end?

Speaker 2 (04:56):
Yeah, I think, Well you here Schmidt spoke post is
the game? She was just you can tell him within
his voice he's happy at the stitch they're making, but
you can also tell that he's still got to he
feels like still a way off to get to we
the neto. But I think for him it was around
the confidence that the books can take from from from

(05:16):
last week. But now the challenge members again, so it's
not been enough that's going enough to stick as a
new challenge and the boys can just build off what
they've done, but they have to be at their best
right from the start rather than being living you going
and get out to a lead like they did.

Speaker 1 (05:32):
It's been a lot talked about the well the curse
of the stadium, Peter, but I want to go back
to the year two thousand, the very first Test match
at what was then Westpac Stadium, and you guys have
just come from an absolute thriller over in Sydney, of course,
which still gets replayed to this day. But goodness me
that that game where you know, a few good j
all Blacks tries were scored in John eels right at
the end slotting over the goal. How much in your

(05:54):
mind do you sort of recreate that moment? What do
you remember from that day? Wellington?

Speaker 2 (05:58):
Oh look badthhold series was just unwrell And you know,
for me it's it's not to forget right that it
does get repeated or whether it's the the game in
Sydney or the game of Nington with all finishing. All
I know is that the rivalry was really strong. The
caliber players that played in those tests were outstanding, and

(06:20):
the fact that you know, one or two decisions away
from our key moments that that that that that decided
that result, you know, and and for us there was
in Sydney when when Change popped it over and then
the last part was women the big poor lot Elsy
from and nailing it down for the wall of me.
So it's you know, the fond memories and one that

(06:42):
I that I love and cherish, but I really do
specifically the Wallabies that that we played in that era
coming off the World Cup one and ninety nine. So
that's that's it's just awesome to see just how close
the game is and and and and how we can
hope fully start to replicate those those games as suction

(07:03):
and really rebuild that rivalry up to where where it
deserves to be.

Speaker 1 (07:08):
And there's plenty of talk around you know, the All
Blacks record at the stadium of Late and Wellington is
is there things about venues, even if they're home ones
that that sort of you know, are things that distract
the team or maybe not see them win as much.
You know, you look at eden Parks record versus the
latter of the stadium or is it do you think
it's just been been sheer luck of you know, things
have happened at them at that time.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
Yeah, made, I can't put it down to being a
bad leg stadium. It's it's the team, you know, those
crucial pressure moments. It's it's the team of some able
to handle it, able to make less errors, more discipline
and key moments. And I think that's that's always been
sealed around around those tough tests. That's it's key moments
and momentum, and and that could happen in any time

(07:49):
a specially when the games tight. So I don't think
Wellington is as a humanity of bad luck. It's it's
just what happens in those games that that that have
been played there where where we're either being off and
there could be just individual responsibility or the other team
does have just come all guns blazing and things have
found their way. So we're just sort of make sure

(08:10):
that we can't use that our look that that won't
be the case. I reckon we'll be up.

Speaker 1 (08:15):
I love it.

Speaker 2 (08:16):
Well.

Speaker 1 (08:16):
That leads into my perfect last question. There was going
to get a score prediction from you before we go,
before leave you Peter, Oh, good, look.

Speaker 2 (08:22):
I think we will. We'll go thirteen plus already think
I think we'll get We'll go thir I'll say thirty
four to twelve.

Speaker 1 (08:31):
Thirty four twelve nice on. Peter will note that down, hey,
thanks so much for joining us. Really appreciate it, mate,
great great to have your analysis and enjoy enjoy the
latest chapter and all Blacks Wallaby's rivalry.

Speaker 2 (08:42):
Thank you very much, Always a pleasure, mate.
