Speaker 1 (00:00):
The pads and whites are getting out of the wardrobe,
balls are being shined back to being knocked in your
club cricket season is upon us in just a couple
of weeks time in Wellington, so let's have a bit
of a preview now, look ahead to what club players
and supporters and volunteers can expect the summer. Matt Wilson,
as head of Competitions at Cricket Wellington, he joins us
now to look ahead to the summer. Well it is

(00:22):
you're Matt, good to chat again. Hope you had a
great winter and we're all set to go prem club
cricket underway in what a fortnight's time?

Speaker 2 (00:29):
Yeah, that's right, Adam. Twelfth of October we get underway,
which is not far away at all. The winter has
zoomed by very quickly, but as is always the case
with cricket, we're hoping it starts to sign up now
and we see that blue sky and we can get
underway on time. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (00:45):
Well, a great day today to give us the sign
that hopefully good weathers on the way. Matt, and we've
heard a few ads on news talks he'd be here
putting the call out to umpires and scorers to get
involved in cricket locally over the summer. I know you're
still looking for people there, So how's that recruitment drive
going and where can people get some more and fout
there possibly.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
Can yeah, for sure. I mean the umpiring and scoring
space is always a difficult one and it's a space
that we're always looking for more numbers. It's a critical
part of what we do and what we need to
run our competitions in the community. It's like your nurses
and your midwives at the hospital, your essential workers. They're
they're vital and we're always looking for for more numbers.

(01:26):
We have had some good recruitment over the winter with
a few new umpires coming on board, but we can
always use more both umpires and scorers, and it is
a court requirement at premier level to have a score
as well. So we've got a couple of clubs out
there in the community at the moment that are looking
for scorers. So if you are interested in getting involved
and you like your stats, it's certainly something that you

(01:48):
consider should consider. You can head to our websites crickt
Wellington website, Cricket Wellington dot co, dot NZ forwards slash
umpires and scorers and get hold of us or fill
out an express of interest form and we can then
get in contact with you from there.

Speaker 1 (02:05):
Right, And can people go without the experience of having
scored or umpired properly before, Like, can you let people
come in and effectively start from scratch?

Speaker 2 (02:14):
Yeah, We've We've got people here in the organization that
can certainly certainly conduct some training, some with first timers.
Obviously the preferences for someone that has had a little
bit of experience before, but we can definitely start you
off from scratch and get you involved and get you
up to speed with the potential to be scoring at
premier level very soon.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
Great, well, here's hoping a few more people are keen. Well, Matt,
let's talk in the club season ahead, which, as we mentioned,
is fast approaching a couple of weeks away. We've seen
a few more people in the nets various parks while
driving past over the last couple of weeks. Some clubs
I know heading away on pre season tournaments as well.
So let's look at DIV one for the men. What
have we got to look forward to when the season

(02:55):
begins in this part of the summer Matt.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
Yeah, of course we'll obviously if we do start the
season on artificials in October, just with the grounds and
the pitchers maturing and coming online from the winter. So
the men will start off with their usual T twenty
Cup competition during during the course of October, which starts
on the twelfth, and they'll play for three weekends back
to backgrounds and then a semifinal on October twenty sixth

(03:20):
and a final on October twenty seventh, which has been
put in for alex More Park once again this year,
great venue to host the final, so that'll be the
men in Division one and two for their T twenty.
They'll then move on to their fifty overs in November,
which is hopefully when we will at least the intention
is to have our grass wikts up and running for
that first round on the second in November. That'll take

(03:42):
them through to around mid January. We will have our
You and Chatfield and Haslet Trophy one day finals and
then for the second half of the season they move
into their two day cricket in February. In March and
this year I'm pleased to announce that we will have
the Pest Cup final back at the Cellos based Reserve
on the fourth to the sixth of April. So really

(04:03):
looking forward to that game. It seems a long way
away at this point, but it's great to have that
game back on the basin for the twenty four to
twenty five season.

Speaker 1 (04:12):
Yeah, wonderful. That's fantastic news. And I know Matt, there'll
be a lot of club players he'll appreciate that gesture.
And it has been something you've been working on for
quite some time, right, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
Sort of a mini project to get the game back there.
It has been there in the past, but it's really
important that we have our community clubs playing on playing
on our number one ground and what is a fabulous
venue and considered one of the best worldwide. So really
good to get our clubs back back on that ground,
and we'll we'll also be hosting a women's T twenty,

(04:46):
the women's Division one T twenty final on the basin
as well in sort of late January, so it's great
to have both the men and women women play their
finals on the ground this year. So really yeah, as
really looking forward to that. It's great we can get
those games back there. Yep.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
And in terms of the competition itself when it gets
underway in a couple of weeks. There have certainly been
a few form teams over the past couple of seasons
in Division one, Matt any teams or player movements you've
been keeping a close eye on through the off season
so far.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
Yeah, I mean there's always the usual, the usual big hitters.
So you know Heart District come into this seasons Peers
Cup holders and they're going to be strong again with
a with another strong player Liner Tiger as well. I
know those two will certainly have the intention of battling
it out near the top East and the mixes always
for honors. Just the interesting thing this year will be

(05:38):
Onslow and Carori. They both come into the Peace Cup
this year, so we've got five teams playing both formats
of one day to their cricket Division one. Onslow and
Cororis have certainly made a few signings. I know Devin
Bishbarker he's moved to Onslow and the talented Elliott Seddens
moved from Tony to Onslo. So they've got a couple
of decent guys coming into their squad there to be rented.

(06:00):
Really interesting to see how they play and Karori if
anyone's being followed following the socials, Liam Dudding and Yayazeb
two new Firebirds making the move to Karori, so hopefully
they can get out there for the club this year,
and it'll be really great to see some of our
Firebirds playing a few more club games this year and

(06:22):
certainly increase the quality of the competition. So it is
exciting to see how things go there and certainly those
two teams coming into the Pears Cup, how they go
competing with some of the more traditional big hitters of
recent times in Division two and the Haslet j Bill.
Obviously we're relegated last year, so they'll be looking to
bounce back big time in Division two, so that there's

(06:44):
certainly one to look out for this year, and they'll
certainly be up there as one of the favorites to
get themselves back into Division one. Pa Toni, you've got
a really good young side developing there as well, so
with a lot of promise, so it's going to be
interesting to see what they can do this year, having
won has overall last year, so they'll be looking to
kick on and you've got the likes of Upperhart and

(07:04):
Vicuni who are playing sort of one format in both divisions.
They're too two sides that can be strong on their
day on their day as well, and then nine to
nine norths and Winery. They'll continue to build as well
in Division two and it'll be interesting to see how
they get on in the in the men's space. But
really really exciting season to look forward to, and we

(07:25):
have got some changes in our two day bonus points
as well. We're running a bit of pilot list this year,
so that's going to be really interesting to see how
that plays out as well.

Speaker 1 (07:35):
We are previewing the club cricket season with Matt Wilson
from Cricket Well, Matt. Men's Division two will that again
take a similar format to Division one you've just been mentioning.

Speaker 2 (07:44):
Yeah, that's correct. Yeah one, Division one and two pretty
much a parallel with each other throughout the season, so
they'll The teach twenty is always an interesting one in
October because it gives those Division two sides the chance
to play against the Division one sides in a mini
torn and test themselves early on. So yeah, it's going
to be going to be really interesting to see how

(08:05):
they go.

Speaker 1 (08:06):
Great and the women's game matter it's obviously been a
focal point of cricket Wellington over the past few seasons,
growing the female side of things in terms of club crickets.
So how things looking for that this year and are
they starting slightly later than the pre men's grades this season?

Speaker 2 (08:22):
Yeah, that's right.

Speaker 1 (08:23):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (08:23):
Women's Division one space is always an interesting one and
it's been a big off season and seeing where that's at,
I think it's come to a little bit of a
crossroads with the women's Division one comp and them really
wanting to push on. We've got seven seven clubs that
are playing currently in Division one for this year. Numbers
are looking pretty good across all seven of those teams

(08:46):
tracking currently and they do start a little bit later
on the second of November. This year, they will start
with their T twenty comp which is a change from
the previous couple of seasons. We've always started with forty overs,
but we'll start with T twenty year and will be an
extended T twenty competition of fourteen rounds. Previously it was ten,
so fourteen rounds and then the final as mentioned at

(09:08):
the Base and Reserve in the late January, which will
be great for the women and then forty overs into
February in March, which is a little bit of a
reduced forty over comp but we've just got a factor
in the buyers with the seven teams in that grade.
It's also our intention to engage our friends over in
the wide and Upper and hoping to get some games

(09:30):
for the team that might have the buy in any
given week to maybe travel over the hill for a
game or two. I know Queen Elizabeth Parks Park can
be a really great venue to play some tracker over
their own master then great.

Speaker 1 (09:41):
And but Tony Riverside springs to mind when you think
of successful teams in that women's competition in recent years.
Are they looking to be a strong force again.

Speaker 2 (09:49):
Yep, yep, definitely. Putni are definitely looking strong in one
of the favorites again in Division one. They'll certainly be
looking to make it a three pet of the tea
to any auty over comp I and the City will
also be strong again, so they'll be pushing them more
that they no doubt, And I guess we don't really
know too much on the other teams as yet. They

(10:10):
are developing nicely. Colegions can certainly cause an upset on
their day as can Johnsonville up and we have a
new team in City Suburbs entering the grade this year,
which is a combination of three affiliated clubs are sort
of based up around Corra area, so it's going to
be really interesting to see how they go in the
Division one space this year, having one Vision two last

(10:32):
year and building a really good hub of players up.

Speaker 1 (10:35):
Up there in the Hills and overall mat across the
different grades and divisions as a whole. How things looking
overall in terms of team numbers player numbers compared maybe
with last season.

Speaker 2 (10:46):
Yeah, we're tracking pretty well. I think I can't come
out and say that we've got a massive amount of
growth at the moment, but I think we're retaining a
lot of our numbers currently and a lot of our teams.
I think the big difference we're seeing this year, particularly
below prem level, is where teams are moving to. Some
are moving out of the T twenty social comps into
the forty over competition, and we're also seeing more teams

(11:10):
jumping up into I guess our senior part of a
pyramid and Division six and seven and looking to move
their way up. We have got an exciting change in
our reserves this year, I should mention as well, where
we've added some T twenty in there with fifty overs
and time cricket, so they're playing a variety of different formats,
and we've really stripped back the competition structure and the

(11:31):
point structure there as well, where we really get back
to basics where it's I guess about winning cricket games
and sort of adopting a similar model to what we
see in the United States, where it's very much a
win lose ratio and removing things like bonus points. Again, yeah,
you don't know how it's going to go until you
try it. But we're really excited to see where those

(11:52):
reserve grades Division three and four go with this new
format this year, and we may look to them install
that in our Division five Sect seven grade in future seasons.
So really exciting space there this year, and a few
teams moving into that space knowing that potentially there could
be some changes here in the future.

Speaker 1 (12:11):
Wonderful. Well, yeah, some great new initiatives through the off season, Matt.
For this year, I know a lot of people are
looking forward to club cricket getting underway, as are we
here on news talks. They'd be talking about it each Saturday.
Nice of the summer is almost here, so I appreciate
the thorough run through of everything ahead of the season.
Matt and we'll be chatting crickets each and every weekend
from about two weeks time. Looking forward to it.

Speaker 2 (12:33):
Yep, no, appreciate it, Adam, we'll talk soon for more
from News Talks. There'd be listen live on air or
online and
