The Parliamentary Sports Trust's rugby and netball teams head to Porirua's Ngāti Toa Domain on Sunday October 20th, for a special cause.

The teams will meet respective invitational teams from the Āhuru Mōwai Trust to support the Porirua-based charity.

The trust supports families with extra and special needs by creating safe spaces and places where they can find support.

Āhuru Mōwai's SOCKtober campaign through October supports families, saying "You might not be able to walk a mile in their shoes, but you can wear some socks to show your support".

The netball game at 10am and rugby game at 11:30am will be run alongside a barbeque and Hangi to purchase food for lunch, along with auction items and charity socks available to purchase.

Adam Cooper spoke to the event organiser, and Āhuru Mōwai Trust chair, Paul Latham to preview the day.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
It's the All Sports Breakfast with rutherd and Bomb Toyota
and Ken Toyota on News dogsb Well.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
A very special occasion coming up tomorrow at Pottydo's Nati
toa domain, the Parliamentary Sports trusts, rugby and netball teams,
a few politicians in the mix. There will be taking
on invitational teams representing the Ahuu Moai Trust. It's a
Potter Doer based charity supporting families with extra and special needs.
A very special event for them with the parliament teams

(00:31):
choosing to come and play netball and rugby against them,
all in the name of raising funds for their Soctober campaign.
The chair of the Ahudu no I Trust in Pottydoer
is Paul Latham. He's done a great job organizing this
event for tomorrow and pulling it all together at Nazi Tower.
He's with us now, Paul, Very good mornings here. All
set for tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
Here, Hey, Coops, Yeah, no, it's it's building nicely. It's
been on the burner for now four so weeks and
I'm getting haven't had too many or pullouts from the
teams that we've coddled together and the rugby and netball
boys and girls are looking forward to what should be
a great day. We're just looking good to.

Speaker 1 (01:11):
Yeah, that's great to hear. We had the Climate Change
Minister sign on Watson last weekend, Paul giving us a
bit of a tease as to who might be featuring
in the parliamentary teams. Can you shed any lights to
our listeners here this morning on who might be fronting
for the invitational sides for your charity tomorrow. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
Well, Dynasty is a company that I work for and
I've been able to open a number of customers from
further Afield, from the Wardenburgs, the Gray Towns, the Fielding
Yellows further Afield. A few paraplum centurions will be donning
the jersey, but our real superstars for me is that

(01:48):
I've been able to involve a number of premiere rugby
players playing in the Wellington Club competition who have children
with disabilities themselves, and it'll be a really special occasion
to honor what they do in the role as a parent.
Rugby obviously played a big part for me in being

(02:09):
involved in something outside of family, and these guys an
opportunity of melding a game of footy for the cause,
which is the Hoodie more I Trust is pretty special
and a number of other people that we've involved, people
that have supported our fundraisers in the past, like our
Mountain to Climb which we climb up Branger Tuhi the

(02:29):
Mountain and Purudu every day in April, and there are
a number of people that are playing in those teams,
both netball and rugby, who have supported those causes at
the same time. So it's not necessarily based on ability,
but it's definitely about heart.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
Yeah. Great, certainly sounds like it's been arranged with a
lot of hearts. Can you tell us a little bit
more about your charity, Paul, The Ahuu Mowaii trusts obviously
based in potty doer, very supportive of families that themselves
are often going through difficult times.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
Yeah. Well, us that my wife Mandy and I have
founded back in twenty sixteen as we had some first
hand experience of raising a child with disability, in our case,
nonverbal autistic young man called Ike, and we had some

(03:19):
firsth hand experience of the gaps and lack of support
that was actually there for families so we're not ones
to necessarily complain, but more around doing something to help
fill those gaps where we can. So it's going over
the time since then, Adam, for I think we probably
provide now close to eleven hour's worth of family time

(03:42):
in various therapy and sensory sessions primarily and put it
on but different community pools around Wellington. We families can
get out from their home in a supportive accepting the environment,
and that's kind of where we're heading to do more
of that. So I guess all funds raised across our

(04:03):
two fundraising events throughout any particular year are used to
make these activities more affordable for families as regular as
possible for these families to experience some good times together
as a family.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
Yeah great, well that's awesome, and I mean, how grateful
are you that the part of Entry Nipmull and rugby
teams have chosen to come and be part of this.

Speaker 2 (04:25):
Yeah, pretty humbled when I got the call. It was
too good an opportunity to say no. And I know
how much the benefit, the benefit of the families and
the work that we do will benefit from this game.
So all these games and be pretty humbled looking forward
to the challenge. Hell of a day. The community looks

(04:48):
like it's really rallying and getting behind us to come
and enjoy that Sunday afternoon or late morning, early afternoon.
There will be plenty for people to see and do,
that's for sure. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:00):
And in terms of raising funds for your October campaign,
can you tell us a little bit more about that
and whether people can come along tomorrow or donate from
a far Paul, what's the best way they consider get involved?

Speaker 2 (05:12):
October itself is actually one of these campaigns that we
rely on annually. Obviously, we've about a number of socks
that are supported by Dynasty Sport, who allow us to
create a bit of a message around that while you
might not be able to walk a mile in my

(05:32):
shoes and what it's like to raise a family with
a child with the disability, but you can wear some
socks to show your support. So Soctoba dot co dot
nz is where people can purchase as a bundle of
socks one, three or more and that will be shipped
out to them. We actually have a Soctober Day, which
is the last Friday in October, where he encourage as

(05:53):
many workplaces or people who've purchased the socks throughout the
month to wear them at work. But it's just a
really nice nod. Everyone loves a good pair of socks
and to have this rugby game and netball game in
October or so October for us has been fantastic and

(06:13):
we'll be wearing some pretty brightly colored striped socks at
both of those fixres. Just to remind everyone that's about.
Socks will be available for sale at Marchi Tour domain
on the Sunday as well if people want to save
themselves a little bit of freight.

Speaker 1 (06:26):
Great Paul, Well, I'm sure many it will be getting
along to support the cause and support a few parliamentarians,
a few celebrities and both teams in both the netball
and rugby tomorrow. All the best and thanks for your time.

Speaker 2 (06:37):
Paul.

Speaker 1 (06:38):
That is Paul Latham, chairman of the wonderful charity based
in Potty are the Ahuu Moai Trust. So yeah, big
games tomorrow at Nazi Towers Domain ten o'clock They're taking
on the parliamentary netball team and then eleven thirty on
the field fought the rugby raising some great money some
young food honey in the works. I believe so Yes,
She'll be wonderful there tomorrow. For more from you, Talk
