Speaker 1 (00:00):
Yes, looks at me on Wellington's All Sport Breakfast and
as we always do around this time on a Saturday morning,
we talk all things golf and this week a particular
focus on the upcoming Interprovincial Golf Nationals being held down
in christ Church. Wellington men's and women's teams will be
taking part from Tuesday, so joining us for our slot
this week. As always General Manager of Golf Wellington Steve
(00:23):
we Are and alongside Steve this morning is the long
serving Wellington Rep player Captain of the Wellington Into Provincial
men's teams. He's had four titles to his name from
this event over the years. John o'caine, morning to both
of you, a very good thanks. So yeah, one of
the big events of the calendar. Steve wanted to start
with you on this one. Quite a new look team
(00:43):
for the Wellington men sort of heading heading into things
this year.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
Yeah, both the men's and women's team have two and
three debutantes respectively, and that's just a natural order of
things as young chaps move on up into the selection
space and others move on to either college golf or
professional golf.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
So yeah, certainly three new players in that team kept them.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
By Johnno and a couple of new girls and the
women's teams.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
So exciting time.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
Yeah, great and Johnno. From a captain, how to you
sort of go about making sure everyone's especially the new bees,
are integrated into the team and the way things have
gone over that the many years you've been involved.
Speaker 4 (01:20):
Yes, I guess it's a tough one. You know, like
you sort of think whether you have to treat anyone
any differently because it's their first time or whatnot. But
I think it's it's more just using your own experience
to sort of tell them what to expect and to
you know, to help them prepare the best that they
can and sort of, you know, just use advice that
(01:44):
you've sort of gathered over the over the years of
doing it yourself. I guess there's no real like, you know,
a hazing process or anything that they have to go through.
It's just, you know, it has just golf at the
end of the day. So yeah, just going back on
past expect actors and trying to pass on what we can.
Speaker 1 (02:03):
Yeah, and John, it's been a busy last month or so.
The tournaments have ramped up. You know, a few of
the different REP teams that have been together. How do
you sort of, you know, make sure you're and the
best nick for for the inter Provincials each year.
Speaker 4 (02:15):
I guess yes. I mean there's a little bit of
fitness and stuff and that you have to do throughout
the year, and you know it's coming, so you sort
of I guess you mentally prepare for those sort of
things throughout the year, whether you do it sort of
on purpose or just you know, naturally, you know, you
know that those or the two weeks for me being
(02:36):
the Masters and Open open level tournaments. But it's yeah,
I guess you just go through the motions in a
way and just go, Look, I prepare the same way
for any other event, and I'm probably looking forward to
these more than others, so that there's no real sort
(02:58):
of you know, most ofational thing. I guess that you
have to do yourself. You're pretty up and ready, so
it's just about pacing yourself, I guess, and getting into it.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
Yeah, and John on the Masters a couple of weeks
back down south, far further south, and now you'll be
heading to this coming week obviously probably not petering out
to the result you wanted, and what looks like a
pretty competitive tournament. How often has I guess how the
form's gone at Masters correlated to and to Provincials, given
there's always a little bit of a crossover with with personnel.
Speaker 4 (03:30):
Yeah you can, I guess, golfer so fickled that you can.
You know, you can have it one day and not
the next to Yeah, you sort of. I guess you
take it in your stride what happens and deny the tournament.
But definitely if you you know, if you if you
play well, not necessarily just in those two tournaments, but
in the in the qualifying stuff we have beforehand, if
(03:51):
you're playing well or managing to score well without your
best stuff, it only helps to take some confidence into
those sort of things. And I guess the knowledge and
experience that anything can really happen, you know, you can
just something can just click during one of these events.
There long events, and you know you can go from
(04:12):
not playing great to being in top forman in not
too long a time, I guess. So yeah, yeah, hopefully
everyone kind of tacks in a little bit of confidence
from you know, we've we've all made the team, we've
all prepared together, and yeah, just taken that confidence and
see where it takes it.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
Yeah, great and Steve Cross both the men's and women's programs.
How much is this kind of tournament every year? Your
measure on on where you know Golf Wellington sits at
a at a top level compared to the rest of
the country.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
Yeah, certainly there's no getting away that the bars get
pretty higher from upland obviously numerically is population wise and
for their results by far and away the most successful
province at the six national and the provincial levels is
the second behind that is success the last decades, So
there's a good measure of the air. But certainly the
(05:05):
individuals commencement themselves against the other individuals and are nationally
or internationally ranked. And I guess the measure of success
for Gulf Wellington is.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
More the new faces and the new names.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
And representing the province themselves and their clubs and families,
et cetera in a top foor manner. So yeah, it
is a measure of how we're going, but it's not
everything around the results.
Speaker 1 (05:29):
Yeah, Okay, John O Russy and here Woods the two
locations tell us your past experiences on either of those
courses and what you're expecting come Tuesday.
Speaker 4 (05:40):
Well, rushly none whatsoever. I never played there, driven past
it at the airport. Obviously, we've been able to sort
of access stuff online and have a look at layouts
and how the whole sort of shape up in photos
and videos. Here would I played Charles to their four
(06:01):
or five years ago, maybe after the redesign. I'd actually
played the original course a long time ago. For the
new Zealan ameter both from what I can see and
what I know, pretty good and challenging in their ways
golf courses. But I think we'll fit in quite nicely
to the staff we have on board, especially as we've
(06:23):
sort of we've tried to put a little bit of
an emphasis on sort of planning and stuff over the
last few years, so we kind of go there knowing
what to expect and practicing towards that. And yeah, we
don't hopefully we don't get any surprises or anything like that,
but I think both courses will be and fantastic that
and yeah, be perfectly ready for us to get aboard.
Speaker 1 (06:47):
Yeah, and Johnny, you're not getting any surprises with the
draw because that stretched out a lot far in advance,
so you know you're starting with Tasman at Rustly, then
it moves to Herewood for the next couple of rounds
against North and Rangy and it goes on from there.
What have you made of of the draw that's been
put in front of you?
Speaker 4 (07:03):
Yeah, I mean I think a lot of people will say,
and I think our first reaction is, you go, we've
got quite a good draw. But I don't know whether
there necessarily is such a thing, because you any team
can can play well or can trip you up, or
you know, like you can underestimate any team at any stage.
So I think, yeah, whilst it looks good on taper,
(07:24):
I think we need to make the most of that
as well by you know, like I say, not taking,
not taking anyone likely playing our game and what have you.
I guess the first goal is to get off to
a good start, then make the semis and then you know,
from there it's just a one round shootout in a way.
So there's I guess how we look at it from
(07:46):
a planning point of view rather than you know, who
are we who are we playing?
Speaker 2 (07:50):
Type thing?
Speaker 1 (07:51):
Yeah, and Steve Johna alluded to it there a bit,
but just for our listeners who might want to track
the progress online through the next few days when it
starts on on Tuesday, just run us through the exact format.
Is the top four that advance after the six rounds?
Speaker 2 (08:04):
Yeah, So the men's tournament is in two pools, so
the top two teams out of those pools advance into
the semis. The women's format is slightly different.
Speaker 5 (08:13):
There are only twelve teams, so each team will play
six opponents and the top four teams out of that
whole group will advance the semi finals. So you obviously
can't go past Auckland Harbor and the local scandal. Be
very strong teams in that woman's face, and then we
would like to as many other things, will consider the
(08:34):
opportunity is there to take one or two of those
places for the team finals, and it's gone. It's the
one round shootout, So getting to that Saturday morning is
all important.
Speaker 4 (08:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (08:45):
And just finally, John O, you've been doing this for
so long now, you've obviously had four titles from this
to go with you a couple of men's Masters titles
as well. Does the passion still just come through every
time you put on that Wellington ship when you're heading
to a new tournament, like this.
Speaker 4 (09:00):
Absolutely yeah, I can say that pretty easily and pretty quickly. Yeah,
there's no. I don't think there's anything quite like representing Wellington. Obviously,
I've done a little bit of other stuff, you know,
I've represented New Zealand, or I've represented myself in big events,
and I still maintain and try and pass on to
all the guys. But I still think this is the
(09:22):
best part of golf for me and hopefully for the
other guys as well. But yeah, like, I don't think
there's anything like, you know, being at the pinnacle of
your local sport and going and hanging out with some
really good mate so you play a lot with golf
with and you're trying to win a national title. I
(09:43):
don't think there can and should be much better than that.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
Absolutely no. Well, we're all right behind you as we'll
watch with interest over the next week or so. Guys,
great to catch up John, all the best and Steve
with you being part of things down there as well,
go well too, and I look forward to tracking the
progress so the next few days.
Speaker 3 (10:02):
He thanks Adam, cheer Steve.
Speaker 1 (10:04):
