Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let's kick start our sports raps and we will go
straight to balls first and in studio, Jason Putterker's with us.
One to here, Jason Morning, Adam. We've talked several times
this summer already just about the busy year of bowls
it is for Wellington. We're luckily enough to you, lucky
enough to have some some redic called tournaments coming here
over the summer, Jason. One of those is the big
Trans Tasman Tournament end of January. It gets underway at

(00:21):
nine AY and we've had a couple of announcements about
he'll be representing us.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Yeah, great to see this event back. It was at
nine oh last year as well, so comes back to
nine I this year. And we're fortunate as Wellington Bowl
is to have a few her owns being selected. So
in the opens men we have Fimbar mcgigan who's been
selected again. He made his debut in this tournament last
year at nine O halfway through he filled in for

(00:45):
Ali Forsyth who pulled up sick I think during that event.
So he enters first caps during that event and he
gets picked again for this one. So it's great for
Fimbar in the women's development we have Natasha Russell who's
one of our again overseas based Valentonian, so she picks
up a cap in the development team. And then the
men's development team we've got Blake Signal who's back again

(01:07):
played in this event last year, and again Robbie Byrd
who came into the development team last year when Fimba
moved up to the senior team and he's back in
the team for another crack at his home club as well.
So great to see.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
And is that you know that surely helps give you
a bit of a psychological edge playing at home.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
Yeah, look, and I think in hometown support, right, So
he's gonna have a lot of supporters here, as all
the Wellington players will and that'll count a lot, so
no doubt. We'll talk about that a bit close to
the time, and a great opportunity for not only bowlers
to go down and see some Australia and New Zealand competition,
but anyone, you know, it's free to go down and
have a look. So, like I said, we'll preview that

(01:43):
a bit later in January.

Speaker 1 (01:45):
Yeah, looking forward to that, right, So we'll recap into club,
but obviously this time last week previewed round six for
the women and the men. To we start with the women, Jason,
how did that pan out?

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Yeah, Dynasty Sport into Club Round six was played last weekend.
We had Johnsonville twenty two to one winners over Miramar,
Tawa big winners over Victoria twenty three nil. Plymoton beat
Tony Central sixteen to eight. Again, Stakes Valley big winners
over Silver Stream. That was one versus two last week,
so a big result there for Stakes Valley and nine

(02:16):
I winning the bottom of the table clash fifteen to eight.
So some interesting results there have sort of changed the
table a little bit. And at the moment we see
johnson Will jumped to first one hundred and nineteen points,
but they've actually played two extra games, so they've Next
week is their last game and next week they'll be
playing Stakes Valley, which is who were in second place

(02:38):
one hundred and thirteen with two games in hand. So
if Stakes Valley win that game next week, almost assured
of having home advantage when it comes to the playoffs.
Silver Stream in third place on ninety points again played
an extra game. Tawa on sixty nine and fourth played
an extra game as well, so only two games less
for those two teams. Then we have Plymoton on sixty eight,

(03:00):
Choria sixty two, Miramar fifty eight and Patony Central fifty three.
Same bottom two as we've had the last couple of
weeks nine iine to forty seven and I part on
forty three. But with twenty three points available each round,
it's looking pretty tight. There's a lot of teams that
can still make the top four and there's a lot
of teams that can still make the bottom two. So

(03:20):
good mentioned to see how these last three rounds go.

Speaker 1 (03:22):
Yeah, okay, some real one sided games. Was it the
same in the men or things of it tighter last weekend?

Speaker 2 (03:27):
Yeah? Interesting? In the men we spoke last week we
had top five versus bottom five, the opportunity to split
that table apart. Well, the games didn't go that way
and we had three of the bottom teams beating three
of the top teams. So interesting results. Tawa beating Stokes
Valley fifteen to seven, and it was one of those
those games. I beating Mirramar fifteen to eight, Plymouth Johnsonville

(03:52):
beating Plymoton fifteen eight, Lyle Bay beating Victoria Away fifteen eight,
and Island Bay were bottom of the table beating Tony
Central fourteen nine, so that table is rarely tightening up.
Now we have nine An eighty nine points, Johnsonville eighty seven,
a little bit of a gap back to Stakes Valley
on seventy six and Victoria on seventy one to around

(04:14):
out the top four, but close in behind. We've got
Tony Central on sixty nine, Tais sixty four, Plymoton fifty nine.
Lyle Bay get themselves out of the bottom too courtesy
of their victory over Victoria. They're on fifty four. Miramar
drop in on fifty three in Ireland Bay on fifty.
But again that's a tight table. There's a lot of

(04:37):
balls to come in that section. I think we might
see changes to the top four and possibly changes to
the bottom two as well.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
Okay, and resumes next weekend.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
They're right, Yes, another ound next weekend and then we
have a bit of a break and we come back
white tonguey weekend for a double header which will close
out the round robin.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
Cool all right, leaf for to chatting that next week.
Let's go to the over sixties pairs very up to
with that.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
So there's first of our over sixties events played during
the week, fours and singles to come later on and
then we'll have a finals weekend or finals competition where
all the finals are played. So we're down to the
semi finals of the over sixties peers. In the first
semi final we have Brent Stubbins and Alan Brighter of
Johnsonville and they'll square off against Rowan Cuff and Graham

(05:21):
down from Plymoton. And in the other semi final we've
got Ken Brown and Adrian Cronin from Johnsonville up against
Raj Suka and Barbara Pilkington from Ireland Bay.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
All right, and the open singles, the aerial masters stuff
what have is that that's at knockout stage now.

Speaker 2 (05:38):
So today we'll have qualifying. You're going to win two
out of three to qualify. Tomorrow we go into knockout
and then through to the finals as well on Monday.
That should be completed by then. One hundred and forty
eight men. That's the second highst we've had for the
last fourteen years, probably your second hist actually we've had
overall and slightly up on last year. Women fifty six

(06:02):
entries and that one slightly down, but as a combined
number two hundred and four. That's an equal best for
about fourteen years now, so happy to see that and
see the numbers still remain pretty strong and that makes
that the second biggest singles competition in New Zealand for
the men, only behind the National Singles. So it's a

(06:23):
great event and it's a tough one to win, so
defending champs going into this event, we've got Craig Walker
and Paula Meredith both returning to defend their titles. Players
to watch out for this is going to be a
bit of a tough one. The obvious choices of Ray Martin,
I think, fim Bar mcgwiggan and Robbie Byrd. We've already
spoken about Fin Bahr and Robbie making the trans Tasman

(06:46):
scene and Ray Martin's been part of that New Zim
High Performance squad as well. So we also have Jordan
Keene who was runner up last year. Interesting to see
how he goes this year, so we can back that
up and some other singles players we have around the place,
Sam Allison from Nine to Eye, Steve Ditford from per
Tony Central, and we've got a few out of the

(07:07):
area visitors and Gavin Hamlin plays a bit of singles
out of the Martinborough Club, so it might be one
to watch as well.

Speaker 1 (07:13):
All right, So yeah, run across the weekend. It seems
like a really popular tournament though. What's what do you
think's triggered the ignitement of entries?

Speaker 2 (07:21):
I think in the past what we've done is we've
had to have markers for singles, right, and every club
had to provide eight markers per green, so essentially they
took out eight people out of every green that we
were being used that could enter the competition. We adjusted
it slightly so now the players mark and each club

(07:41):
that needs to provide two markers, so all of a sudden,
these people that were marking and maybe not playing when
they wanted to play can out enter the tournament, and
therefore the numbers have gone up.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
Yeah awesome, all right? And what about in the women's competition.

Speaker 2 (07:53):
Jase, So, I'm the women's competition stand out for me
as Lisa White prolific and singles in the past, so
she's going to be a hot favorite I think going
to this. But man, she's got a tough draw. She
draws Dale Rayner first up and both rep players so
I mean essentially, what's going to happen here is one

(08:14):
of those players are going to lose their first game
and they will go essentially straight into knockout because they
won't be able to afford to lose another game. And
then Lisa also has to play Kara and Guildford who's
a Wellington Rep as well, so they play each other last,
so it's been on results that could actually knock one
of those players out of the tournament at that point.
And Karen also comes up against Alia Tavulu who's well

(08:37):
versed in singles, so she's a pretty tough section there.
It'll be interesting to see what happens and how those
results go. Claire Hendra another Wellington Rep. First game against
defending champ paul E Meredith. Again, one of those players
are going to lose that game and they're going to
go straight into knockout for the rest of the tournament.
Won't be able to lose again. Another one to watch
out for Angela Signal who's taken over the single spot

(08:59):
at Stakes Valley Premiere women's team and has won who
last four games there, so sneaky won there to watch
and see how she goes. Rosanna mirrorway from nine to I.
She won the Open Fours earlier this year. Again, one
to watch out for another Wellington Rep match up here
Kenny Critchlow and June wirel play each other first as well.

(09:21):
Again one of those players are going to lose straight
into knockout. So there are some very tough sections out
there in the women's game.

Speaker 1 (09:29):
Yeah wow, some interesting matchups across the board well well
have thought to following that and obviously again chatting into
club for the final round before Christmas next week Jayce,
So have a great weekend and we'll cash up then
you two.
