Speaker 1 (00:00):
Nine past eight well William Jones Park and Waywia. Marta
was basking in sunshine yesterday afternoon as two thousand excited
Hurricanes fans packed in to watch the team's final pre
season Super Rugby match against the Blues. It was a
thirty one nineteen win for the Canes. They were up
twelve to seven at halftime, but I thought the Hurricanes
(00:21):
were certainly the dominant team for decent chunks of the game.
They made some great breaks. They impressed on the counter
attack as well. The tries went to Kerninaholo, Billy Proctor,
Kate Banks, Fehie Finong and a Fall and Peter Larkeye two,
Harry Godfrey, Riley Hohepper getting decent time in the number
ten Jersey as the race for that is on with
(00:42):
Brett Cameron and Rubin Love both injured at this point
of the season. Peter hu Mugger Jensen on his home
ground at Waynuiya. Marta started with a real burst of energy,
making several great line breaks. He looked like he'd worked
hard in the off season, must say, and I think
showing it's going to be an interesting bustle for that
number twelve Jersey with Riley Higgins this year. Also it
(01:04):
was great to see cam royguard his first match of
twenty twenty five after that challenging but rewarding year for
him by the end of it, very impressive and dominant
when he came on and half back of you know,
obviously one of a number of all blacks scattered across
both sides in the match yesterday. And also just want
to mention the ground staff, the council, the rugby club
(01:25):
did an amazing job producing a brilliant surface that all
players and coaches had nothing but great things to say
about during the day yesterday in the sunshine and wainui.
So a brilliant day had by all. And hey just
to cap it off, the Hurricanes had a pretty good
win as well as the countdown is on to the
start of the season proper. So after that when by
the Canes, I caught up with their coach Clark laidlaw
(01:47):
that why Nui Marta yesterday? Well, claik, what did you
want to get out of today seven days out from
the start of the season.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
Well, one of the things I want to do was
connected with community. I mean you look at you know,
the amazing job. Why new he's done to the field,
the people here. We came pre Christmas to do some
work in the community, and yeah, it's a big part
of us wanting to.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
Get that right today.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
So super pleased with that. And then you know, from
a rugby side, just really keep practicing how we want
to play the game and yeah, get buddy on, buddy
that's not our own buddies. And you can see there's
some stuff that went well and some stuff that we
really to keep thinking about. But you know, all in all,
really happy with the preseason where we're at, and yeah,
excited to get into it next week.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
A lot of eyes were on some of those old
blacks return today. I guess Ken would be one. He
got probably what about half a game through the middle
of the match had how did you feel he went?
Speaker 2 (02:32):
Yeah, he's good, isn't He's a god rugby player. Doesn't
take him long to get up to speed. He's seen
now with his injury coming back, how quickly you know
that game for Counties scores two tries and yeah we thought,
you know, he's came back in the group really well.
He can tell he wants to lead and he's a
number one night and obviously in our club, and yeah,
along made that continue. You know, he's he's got a
lot of growth in his game still and he's hungry
(02:53):
to grow in different areas and we're going to challenge
on that. But all in all, it was a really
good hit out FROMM. Since I guess fust Rounounds is
no Vem, but sort of.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
A few of those options at team have a run
around today as well. Where where are you at with
that awake up from from Crusiders.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
Yeah, we need to have a good look, won't we.
But I thought they all done well. Carl him at
the back with Harry and then Harry shifted to the back,
and then two nineteen year olds that came on at
the end was and we'll call and Liam O'Connor have
future pivots for us. So yeah, it was you know,
it was different halves, wasn't it. You know, it was
a bit looser in the second half. It was a
bit more of a tight tussle and defense in the
first half. So yeah, we'll have a good look at
(03:27):
it and then make our decision from them.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
And just over all, you mentioned few areas to improve on.
What what are the immediate focuses from from what you
saw with your own eyes today.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
I thought I thought the first half we got narrow
decision making. There was opportunity to move the ball, setting
off turnovers. So we talked about that half time, and
I'm just making sure we keep our heads up. I
thought some of the defense was outstanding, but can we
be better there around you know, those big collisions the
big man on this, so we can worry without another day.
But yeah, and you know the set piece. Maybe at
the end we were younger players. There's some good little
(03:54):
lessons for them around how they execute. But yeah, all
in all, you know, really happy, and we know that
preseason and doesn't know, I always coming for too much
so when I get too carded away, But no, no,
engury's better looks of it. So we'll dust yourselves off
and get ready.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
Oh that's the best news, isn't it. No injuries, No
further injuries for the Canes on the back of that
win yesterday. And Clark actually just said after we stopped
recording that it is going to be a fifty to
fifty where he sees it at the moment between Riley
Higgins and Peter Urmunger Jensen for that number twelve Jersey.
Also speaking of midfield there Billy Proctor a huge rugby
year for him last year, of course, making his All
(04:28):
Black State boo after yet another successful Super Rugby season,
so a lot of eyes on him and Hurricanes colors
for twenty twenty five as well. He was one of
yesterday's tri scores. I spoke to Billy Proctor after the game,
or Billy has the start of another year after a
big one for you last year, what kind of approach
have you sort of tried to come into this year
with At the stage, I.
Speaker 4 (04:47):
Just get him the body right, really, you know, just
trying to give myself on a position where I can
be out on the field and put my hand up
for this team. Yeah, and I guess also trying to
be a leader in this team. We have, you know,
a few young boys coming through and we've lost a
few from last year, especially in the backs, like we're
quite young to an extent and experience, but you know,
(05:09):
just trying to help the boys out around me and
you know, guide us in the right direction.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
And your assessment on today a few breaks on the
score sheets as well, how did you see things?
Speaker 4 (05:17):
It was nice, nice to get out on a sunny
day and you know, play play the forty that we
like to play, which is you know, expensive and I
guess exciting. Yes, it was nice to get a few
touches and get the ball in a bit open space
and yeah, just just have fun with it.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
Really a bit of energy from Peter among A Jensen
early on. What did you notice of her? He looks
in pretty decent night.
Speaker 5 (05:38):
Yeah, he was.
Speaker 4 (05:39):
He was awesome today. Playing in his hometown might have
something to do with it. I'm sure a lot of
his family and friends are here and this is you know,
where he grew up, and you know, I know he's
very proud of this place. So it was nice for
him to show it and put a performance on for
I guess in front of his family friends.
Speaker 1 (05:57):
Just the last year, you know, be on the All
Blacks tour and game time wasn't necessarily always there. How
did you manage to sort of just stay sort of
game ready and then that when maybe you went on
the park as often as you might have liked.
Speaker 4 (06:08):
I guess it's just part of being the environment, you know,
it's you know, I guess the pinnacle of New Zealand rugby.
And I guess looking from the different perspective that if
you're not playing, you've got to be ready and and
also help the boys that that are playing. You know.
So it was you know, probably a little bit of
different experience than what I had been used to do
in the in the last couple of years. But yeah,
(06:31):
it was it was all good and it was nice
to be in the environment and you know, be around
around those boys and in that color of coaching.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
Jordie's departure last year, what does that sort of change
about the dynamic and the midfield this year as you
call group from last year still to to come together
without him, I.
Speaker 4 (06:46):
Guess it doesn't change too much. Like obviously, you know,
Jordie leaving is you know, he's you know, I guess
he speaks for his stuff. How how how good of
a player he is. I guess the core group was
still here. In terms of midfielders like Riley balen Pete.
You know, we've all been around for for a week
while now, so you know, we know what to expect
(07:07):
and you know, just gives them opportunity to for someone
or want of them to clean their twelve jersey, and yeah,
just gives them opportunity and you know, that's good for them.
Speaker 1 (07:18):
But he propped a sneaking after the Hurricanes pre season
match yesterday against the Blues and it was a predominantly
Hurricanes fan base yesterday, the one that we faithful outs
in numbers. But I think it's fair to say headlighting
the star power across the two teams was former Hurricane
now in Blues colors, of course, Boden Barrett's Boden back
and the Blues this year after missing Super Rugby last year,
(07:40):
of course, and I caught up with Boden briefly after
the game as well.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
He played about forty minutes on the park.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
Good to have you back and welling to mate grass
through its rugby. Why do we first question? Have you
played on William Jones Pike before?
Speaker 4 (07:50):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (07:51):
Look, it's so good to be here.
Speaker 5 (07:52):
What a day, the fields looking amazing and all the
fans came out. I used to turn out every well
most years while as a Hurricane for the junior club registration,
so it's good to be back. And it was actually
the club the Hurricanes assigned me to when I was
here too, so yeah, it's great for the community.
Speaker 1 (08:10):
So good day and brushing off the cob webs from
off season. How did you find it out there? For
first forty minutes seem to go pretty well.
Speaker 5 (08:16):
Yeah, I mean it's psychologically the biggest shift, you know,
putting the boots back on and trying to find some cohesion,
and yeah, getting things to work is a bit harder
than you know your hope. But the key is not
to get too frustrated, find the solutions. And you know,
we've got Round one next week, so we'll we focus
(08:37):
on the Chiefs, take whatever we need to from today
and move forward.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
And what's been like rejoining the environment?
Speaker 1 (08:43):
Obviously a great year for the Blues last year, which
I know you're sort of part of the wider set
up towards the end there, but you know, coming back
in from a championship winning team, what have you.
Speaker 5 (08:50):
Noticed at the moment, I'm all eyes and ears. I'm
figuring out the way that the game is played and
I'm enjoying that. Look, we're got a long way to
go again. We worked really hard last year, or the
boys did that wanted and they said how hard it
was to win. So I feel like I'm a student
of the game and still so much to work on.
(09:13):
So it keeps me hungry. And the main things I
got through today not too badly, feeling okay.
Speaker 1 (09:19):
And it wouldn't want to be in the coach's office
when they're looking at some of the jigsaw puzzles selections
this year with the number ten Jersey, there's a fair
few options they've got on their sleeps.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
Yeah, look, it's it's great.
Speaker 5 (09:28):
It's a great problem to have. Already, there's been a
couple of niggles, a couple of injuries, so we need
a fit squad. It's certainly a full squad effort when
it comes to playoff footy and earning the right to
be there at the business end of the season. So yeah,
we'll just put our hand up and compete as hard
as we can at training and hopefully we can all
(09:50):
contribute to the team.
Speaker 1 (09:51):
And just a week to go of Chiefs to start
things off. Feel feel like everyone's ready to ready to
go for that one.
Speaker 5 (09:55):
Yeah, what a way to start for us. It's Eden Park, Yeah,
home game. We're pretty excited about that.
Speaker 1 (10:03):
Awesome to have you back in all the best of
the season, Thanks very much, Boden Barrett there, Yeah, and
certainly a fan favorite there. You can tell even those
in Blues colors now certainly held in high regard by
Wellington at rugby fans and everyone there that was cheering
on the Hurricanes a popular member of the crowd as
players spent a lot of time yesterday engaging with fans,
signing autographs, getting photos taken. It was a wonderful day
(10:25):
that they can connect with the community, which you know,
they don't get the chance to do that terribly often
in terms of actually playing at a nice, you know,
club level venue, you know, connecting with the grassroots game
and you could tell that everyone involved from the one
Nou your Marta club, you know, ball kids and everything,
chefs and you know, just different people providing different services.
(10:47):
They absolutely loved having the Hurricanes and Blues in town.
A great occasion for rugby. So going to be interesting
this week. Hurricanes haven't chosen a captain for twenty twenty
five yet, obviously a plethora of options. Bradshield's coming into
the year as the incumbent, but there are so many
options across the park. You heard Billy proped to mention
(11:07):
just before that leadership is one of his big tasks
of this year with this Hurricanes group. He's been captaining
this team on and off filling in over the last
couple of seasons. You've got dup Fir's done an amazing
job captaining the Wellington Lions as well, and you know,
just so many other options across the field. So yeah,
I'd say the Hurricanes are going to possibly look to
(11:27):
have not just a captain, but maybe three or four
co captains or a leadership groups. That'll be interesting when
that is announced leading up to that Crusaders game next week.
And obviously a couple of jerseys of interest, that number
ten jersey filling the void of Brett Cameron. The race
is on for that and given what Clarke had said
as well Clark Laidler the coach that the number twelve
jersey and the midfield could be a little bit interesting
(11:48):
this year as well as the Hurricanes spend a season
without Jordy Barrett. So a few interesting talking points leading
up to Game one for the Hurricanes next weekend. It's
the start of the season for them, a tough trip
down to christ Church to take on the Crusaders, who
I think everyone knows we'll make an improvement from last year,
So looking forward to that Gold Sports over on fifteen
(12:10):
oh three am Will be your home of live at
Super Rugby commentaries right through the season. Looking forward to
bringing you coverage of the Hurricanes on the All Sport
Breakfast right through their season and twenty twenty five as well.
