Speaker 1 (00:01):
And it looks like the Crusaders by button to touch.
A heartening start of Valentine's Dave for the Crusaders, down
by fourteen early, they find a way with precision on attack.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Fifty three twenty five final score.
Speaker 3 (00:21):
Yeah, that's how Super Rugby opens for the Hurricanes last
night down in christ Church thirty three twenty five. He
heard they're on gold Sport with Nick Bewley. Hurricanes great
start fourteen mil leaders and then on the score sheets
leading twenty two to fourteen at halftime as well. But
the Crusaders just showing some class late in the game
(00:42):
to see the Hurricanes off and get what I think
is a very statement win from the Crusaders. Approaching the
twenty twenty five season after a rough start last year,
Let's find out how the Hurricanes are reflecting on the
season opener. Assistant coach Bryn Evans is with us on
the show this morning. Brent, very good morning to you,
thanks for joining us.
Speaker 4 (01:00):
Yeah, no, no, no problem, good morning. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:02):
Well it was a high paced way to get the
season underway, wasn't it, Brian?
Speaker 2 (01:04):
What did you sort of make of it? Overall? It
was hard to catch your breath at times.
Speaker 4 (01:08):
Watching on Yeah, it was, you know, even from the sideline,
I think I was running the water and had to
stop and take a bit of water and myself. That
looked pretty fast paced out there.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
Yeah, okay, initial thoughts on the game.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
You know, there were some great moments from the Hurricanes,
particularly in that first half, but overall is a whole
eighty minute performance.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
What have you taken out of that?
Speaker 4 (01:28):
Yeah, look, we were really happy how we started. I
think we were really happy with some of the opportunities
we created, and I think towards the back end of
that game, you know, we maybe didn't look after the
ball as well as we couldn't. We always knew, regardless
of who was playing through the Crusaders coming down here
is going to be a really cuugh ass start the season,
(01:49):
and yeah, they you know, they took their opportunities and
made us pay on the back in.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
There position seemed to be key to points in success
last night. The team that held onto the ball had
had the great moments and ultimately the Crusaders with the win.
Was that the type of game you were expecting hitting
down there?
Speaker 4 (02:06):
Yeah, yeah, one hundred percent. You know, we we did
really well defending for multiple phases and then when we
did turn the ball over, you know, we actually probably
got rid of it a little bit too quickly and
then put ourselves back on on defense and under pressure again,
and you know, guys like Will Jordan Sevarice out wide
(02:27):
exploded a few holes there and made it made it
tough work for us.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
What was behind you think maybe the lack of attacking
options late in that second half when the game was
sort of on the line.
Speaker 4 (02:42):
I just think we uh as that sort of showed
we just didn't have enough ball, didn't have enough territory
at the right end of the field, and you know
something we'll have to go away and look at and
figure out how we could be better in that back
end of the game.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
Set piece seemed to work pretty well.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
You created some good opportunities on the set piece, some
good tries in that first half. From there, you'd be
happy with that for the starting point of the season.
Speaker 1 (03:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (03:06):
Yeah, Look, they're quite they're tough set piece. Whether it'd
be scrumber line now and we thought that we you know,
managed to win our own ball and get a little
bit of go forward there, which gave a good platform
for the backs. And when we did that well, we
showed that we can, you know, move them around the
park and we finished off a couple of tries quite nicely.
(03:28):
So you know, it's a real positive there and something
we'll take forward to next week.
Speaker 3 (03:32):
Give it a few injuries, obviously, the back line on
the whole is quite a young back line.
Speaker 2 (03:37):
Is that a weakness for the Hurricanes at the moment?
Speaker 4 (03:40):
No, I don't think so. You know, like there's some
guys that got their opportunity last night, and I think
for the most part, most of those guys stood up
and then and showed why they should be playing. And
you know, you have pre season, then you have a
long block. We were training from the start of November,
and you don't actually know the speed and the pace
of super rugby tool you actually out there and you know,
(04:04):
some of the boys come off the field and said, man,
that was pretty quick, you know, And that's what it is.
And the only way those guys are going to grow
and get better is from experiences like last night, and
you know they'll they'll be better off for it.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
Harry Godfree at ten. I think a lot of people
that have watched him over the years know what he's
capable of. And he sort of seemed to stare at
the back line with a fair better confidence through a
lot of the game.
Speaker 4 (04:27):
Yeah, it was great for Harry. You know, no better
way to test yourself than to come down to Crash
Hitch and go up against a pretty tough Crusaders outfit.
And I think, you know, he's growing every time he
puts on that tingers and you know, I think he's
going to be a player for the future.
Speaker 3 (04:45):
What's I guess the one focus point brand that you'll
take into team meeting, whether it's on Monday or building
up to the next week's game, that you think needs
needs addressing.
Speaker 4 (04:54):
Yeah, well this is you know, the competition. There's you know,
one week it's the Crusaders, the next week it's the Jurist.
There are two very different sides and two different sort
of preparations for both games. So we'll have to watch them.
I think they're playing today against the Brumbies, and you
know they're always a very hard team to plan for,
(05:14):
how expensive and the type of athletes they have on
the field. But I think, you know, we'll be talking
about the things that we did well in this game,
which was our set piece, and how can we use
that as a strength for ours and then obviously on
the other side of the ball was how can we
we've fixed up those those defensive lapses we had and
make sure that we're you know, have that cohesion from
(05:37):
one to twenty three.
Speaker 3 (05:39):
Injuries have been a bit of a tough point for
the Hurricanes and the off season, just like the.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
Crusaders as well. How did everyone sort of pull through yesterday?
Speaker 3 (05:46):
You could see that the lungs and bodies were taking
a bit of a battering throughout the game.
Speaker 4 (05:51):
Yeah, I think, you know, lungs. Lungs is probably the
number one thing, and you know most of the boys
pushed up to breakfast and pretty good, Nick, So we've
got a great sort of medical team that obviously a
year managing a few injuries at the moment for the squad,
but our mentality really is if you know good to go,
then we need the next one up to step up
(06:12):
and do a job. So we've got really good confidence
in our squad and if boys get given a chance
and they're just going to have to take.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
It, yeah, great.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
Riley Higgins, I know there was a bit of discussion
during the week with that selection at twelve. He was
out of the twenty three. Now was that down to
an injury?
Speaker 4 (06:29):
Yeah, he picked up a little injury at training so
as a bit of an exit, like just an obvious
training injury. So that sort of ruled him out and
he's just hopefully going to get that fixed and see
how see how he turns up after that. So yeah,
(06:50):
and saying that, you know, him and Pete both both
of the head cracks at that jersey throughout the preseason,
and he's been going well and he's got the first
crack at it. So he did it no disservice last night,
which is good.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
Yeah, he seems to have come back and really good neck.
I saw him at Why No Your Master last Friday.
He seems to have trained really well in the off
season and be firing. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (07:14):
I mean, you know, you've got a guy who's who's
gone away for a season and Jeordie who's sort of
commanded that jersey for the last couple of years. So
now that there's now that he's not there, you know,
it's really up for grabs. And both those boys have
been going hammer and tongs all pre season, so it's
been a really great battle to watch.
Speaker 3 (07:33):
Indeed, and just you mentioned that the drawer there Brian
traditionally and clashes with them and years gone by.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
What what kind of game have you had and.
Speaker 3 (07:41):
Have yet to prepare for an opposition that I guess
can throw a lot at you.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (07:46):
I mean it's probably more for the water boys to
get the water out there as fast as you can,
so we know it's going to be a little bit
of a helter skelter left to right game, so it'd
be great to get up to nap. You know, they've
got the fans out there, love their footing and though
they'll be pumped at a super rugby games coming to town,
and I'm sure as the daw they have fans everywhere,
(08:10):
so I'm sure there'll be a few blue juices in
the crowd as well, so it'll be great, great occasion.
Speaker 3 (08:15):
Yeah, nice one, Brett. Really appreciate you chatting to us
this morning. Following this the season. I'm not looking forward
to the season here, especially when the Hurricanes are playing
at Sky Stadium, so appreciate your time, Mat and safe
travels back to Wellington this morning.
Speaker 4 (08:27):
No worries, mate, Thanks a lot.
