Speaker 1 (00:00):
I had a busy weekend for football because certain clubs
(00:02):
are in the early rounds of the Kate Shepherd and
Chatham Cups, but also some Central League games carrying on.
So let's look at the women's side of things to
start things. Often great to welcome in a new contributor
for women's football here on the All Sport Breakfast. Hannah
Wignall has with us. Had a very good morning to
you and thanks for coming on board.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
Hi, thank you very much for having me. I'm really
pleased to be here.
Speaker 1 (00:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
Great.
Speaker 1 (00:22):
How is the season going with Seaturn so far?
Speaker 2 (00:25):
A good season.
Speaker 4 (00:26):
It's a very good season so far, but we got
relegated last year, so we'd expect it to be a
good season.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
Yeah, exactly.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
All right, Well, a big game for you this weekend.
We'll talk about that one in a moment, but let's
go to the Central League and obviously we have seen
Wellington United continue their traditionally good form from the past
few years. Six from six. The Phoenix team in second
place along with Watersyecroy with four from six and one
game is part of the rounds a little bit later
on today, Hannah Victoria University up against that inform Phoenix team.
(00:56):
What do you reckon about this one?
Speaker 4 (00:58):
Well, it's said it's the only Central League game of
the week and it's kind of a top of the
table versus bottom of the table clash. So Phoenix Academy
a second in the league with vic UNI's just sitting
on eighth.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
Sitting eighth in the league on four points.
Speaker 4 (01:15):
I think Phoenix are clear favorites here, but I wouldn't
completely rule Vick out.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
The league is known for upsets and vic Uni have
it well within their grasp. Two weeks ago they almost
pulled off something against Wellington United. I think.
Speaker 4 (01:31):
In particular though, for the Phoenix team, one to watch
is Kdpugh who's currently third on the Golden Boot Ladder,
So an upset could be on the cards, but it's
likely Phoenix will take this.
Speaker 1 (01:43):
All right, one o'clock on the turf at Boyd Wilson
for that one, right, let's go to the Kate Shepherd krper.
Of course, the club knockout competition games being played right
around the country today and tomorrow, and Hannah just give
us a bit of a player's perspective. How excite how
much excitement does this some sort of you know bring
into a team's camping for the National knockout competition each year.
Speaker 4 (02:03):
Yeah, I think it's really exciting for the Wellington clubs,
especially those that don't necessarily make it into the National
Women's League. I think in particular for Wellington United, they
know it's in their grasp to get to the final.
They're the only club in recent history in Wellington to
have made it to a catch up at Club Final
(02:24):
and in twenty twenty one they won, so it kind
of is a bit of anything's possible for the Wellington
clubs in this tournament. It's our bridge to the rest
of the country.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
Yeah, all right, very good. Well excitement building obviously as
several teams have the buy from this round. But still
a few games to be played across the weekend, three
featuring Wellington and Company based teams. And let's start off
this afternoon two o'clock at Newtown Park, Henna Wellington United
versus Potni. What do you see interesting about this one?
Speaker 4 (02:55):
Well, a lot of expectation on United, as I've just said,
having won in twenty twenty one and.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
Made it to a final more recently.
Speaker 4 (03:04):
These two teams, Wellington United and Attorney played each other
last weekend in the Central League.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
United took the win three to one.
Speaker 4 (03:11):
So it's again more expectation on United to come out
with the victory. I think if you look at the
players they've got in their squads, you have two really
attacking players who are top of the Golden Boot Ladder
in the Central League. So it's going to be a
really close game, but it is United to lose.
Speaker 3 (03:29):
All right.
Speaker 1 (03:30):
It's that one underway two o'clock at Newtown Park. Let's
go to tomorrow's action. It does your Seatson club, Hannah
have the trip up to the Company Coast against TIA.
How are you feeling about this one? Oh?
Speaker 4 (03:42):
Look, I'm really excited about the game, obviously personally invested,
and I'll try and give you an unbiased overview. Tikotahanga
or TK is an amalgamation of three clubs up the
coast and they're currently top of the table in the
Wellington Amier League. Seatoon My team was sitting first place
(04:04):
on eight points, so not too much difference between the
top the top four or five players in PRAMS.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
Last weekend, t Can Seatoon played each other. It was
a two all draw.
Speaker 4 (04:18):
Both teams have really dynamic attacks, so there'll be lots
and lots of goal sporing opportunities in this game coming up,
and I can speak from my own personal opinion. It
felt like a bit of a loss last week. Sometimes
a drawer does feel like that. So we'll be definitely
an intense and good battle. I think, being biased, Seatun's
(04:41):
got a real depth of Central League players still in
the squad and so I think it is.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
Seatuns to take all right well the best.
Speaker 1 (04:48):
So that at one o'clock kick off up the coast tomorrow,
then wrapping up the Wellington based games as part of
the Round of the Kach she had cut tomorrow afternoon
in Johnsonville. It's North Wellington against up Hot City.
Speaker 4 (04:58):
Yeah, another two two Premier level teams. Upper Hutt are
currently sitting seventh in the league. North Wellington are currently
sitting bottom of the table. They haven't had a win
this season. They've also not played each other this season,
so it will be an interesting match. I think on paper,
Upper Hut we'll take the win. But the good thing
(05:19):
for North Wellington in this game is that they've got
nothing to lose. They can try new tactics, new players
and you never know they could pull off their first win.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
All right, we will see well. That is the Kate
chefferd Cup games featuring Wellington. The based teams across the weekend.
Had a great to chat. Really appreciate you joining us
for the very first one and we'll Chattigan very soon.
Hannah Wignall there with our first women's football reports here
on the All Sport Breakfast mcday head for men's football
as well alongside the women's. With the Chatham Cup getting
underway and plenty of teams still playing as part of
(05:48):
Central League action as well, let's head to Dale Warburton
to look ahead to the day's action. What is her Dale?
Speaker 3 (05:53):
Good morning again?
Speaker 1 (05:54):
All right, Chatham Cup aways. Pretty exciting, isn't it, especially
in some of these teams that you know it does
mean a loss and some of them will be really
trying hard to get through these first couple of rounds
which will be special for them.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Yeah. Absolutely. It's usually that the lower replaced teams come
in early and try weave their way through a couple
of rounds before some of the big dogs the Central
League teams get a sniff and there's always usual one
team that does are surprisingly well. So I guess we'll
see you in a couple of weeks too, that might
be all.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
Right, let's start off with some of the action today
and we'll start at two pm out at hot Park
stop Out hosting nine night.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
Yeah, but we must mention this one here. I think
stop Out their fifth in Central League two, which is
the division Central League. They've considered just five goals in
six games, pretty defensively sound. They had a pretty comfortable
qualifying win over tik Tahi Tanga, who based up on
the Company Coast there nine I they're down Cap two,
(06:52):
which is basically three full divisions below, but they have
one five from five there, so they're doing well and
looking pretty well for emotion. But you'd think this might
be a big blowout to Stop Out. When I think,
all right.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
Let's go to two thirty Douglas Villa up against Victoria University.
Speaker 3 (07:11):
Yeah, Douglas Fuller they are. That's at seventh in Central
League too. They kind of struggle a little bit. Then
they've had a couple of wins, a drawer and three
losses hosting Victim who in the division below, the sixth
and that Capital Premiere. So Dougs certainly on paper loook
the best side. But Vicktim. You have had three wins
and three losses and they've had a surprise when over heart,
(07:36):
so that's a lot of heart play in the same
division as Douglas Hillis. So they might chance themselves as
another upset to get through the next round. But on
paper you think Douglas Phllip will be the favorites there, all.
Speaker 1 (07:45):
Right, that one over the hell this up them Back
in town Wellington Marrison Tawa.
Speaker 3 (07:50):
Yeah, another one where teams are in different division Tier
tallis at third in centrally two. They've had three wins,
two drawers and a loss. They had left it very
late in their qualify game against Wellington United. They were
one nil down, actually won at three three to one,
but they scored goals in the eighty fourth at ninety
and ninety first minute, so they left it very late
for there. They will be having a trip out to
(08:12):
Computer Pact host to play went to the Maris. They
are fifth in the division below that's kept Premier a
full division below. They had a pretty couptable four nil
winover Stokes Valley. How that was helped by the opposition
goalkeeper getting sent off in that game. So yeah, again
another one where you think should be pretty strong favorites
in that one, all right.
Speaker 1 (08:31):
Wrapping up the Wellington based games as part of many
across the country, Seatoon hosting one, are.
Speaker 3 (08:36):
We mother, Yeah, that's fine, a game where teams are
across different division Seatoon there's six and centrally two. They
would require extra time to be rather unfantasy Greytown Football
Club to get through to this round. They'll host Wandery
mat third and cap Rel prims of the division below.
And we have conceded nineteen goals through six games, so
(08:58):
they're very leaky. They're back but somehow still results. And
they had a comfortable eight or whenever Company Coast United
in their game with a four goal haul from sin Nicole.
So again you'd think Sea team will be Sea team
will be the favorites in that one, all.
Speaker 1 (09:12):
Right, Well, lot goes in those are the Wellington based
games as part of the early round of the Chatham
Cup today across to the Central League, and as we
mentioned and Dale said, most of these teams getting direct
entry into the next rounds of the Chatham Cup, so
full rounds action in the Central League today. Olympic as
well probably expected still six from six and unbeaten letter
(09:34):
yet to put down a game in this competition. So
around seven today Dale, let's start up north at Endeavor
Park where Western Suburbs are hosting the Phoenix Reserves.
Speaker 3 (09:43):
Ithually quite interesting game here, two teams who ru Academy
foundations there with Western Weston suburs A at comfortable six
too went over North Wellington last weekend. Kellyan Newan scribed
a hat trick for them after North Wellington opened the score.
So it has created a little bit of a top
six bottom four divide with Suburbs of six four points
(10:04):
ahead of Island Bay United. So I'll be looking to
christ that gap a little bit more, but sending the
ways as well. As Phoenix are coming off a three
and all lost to Wellings Olympics if their first loss
of the season, and there were three and all down
after about thirty minutes and never quite recovered. They still
remain a second place deal five points off top. But
it should be a pretty good game and perhaps the
sense might be very slim favorites in that one.
Speaker 1 (10:26):
All right, looking forward to that one. That's three pm.
Probably a bit of a mismatched game. Alber Hat City
hosting the Inform Wellington Olympic.
Speaker 3 (10:34):
Yeah, probably right there. I think other heart, they were
surprised one of the last week and they previously only
scored one goal in their first five games, and then
you flipped the script and scored four in the first
twenty three minutes in a game against Patona, included races
to Ethan Baber and Lucas Hanson that put them four
one up earlier in their game, and then they managed
to hold on to games three points for them, So
(10:58):
it's surprising it up for them, say Wells Olympic, they'll
they'll be huge favorites in this one. They beat Well
three no thanks to get goals to Haberschwatson, Jack, Henry
sink Here and Ben Mitter. If look at the stage,
they'll sort of be runaway leaders. So they should have
no problems. Out at Maystone Park.
Speaker 1 (11:17):
North Well Eason still looking for their first one. Any
chance today hosting Aside CORRII.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
Not on not on paper, but you know, funny football
is a funny, funny game. Years North Under. If they'd
had another heavy loss, I think it's about the fourth
in a row there. This time they lost six two
against West so they now conceded thirty three goals in
six games, which is an astronomical amount. It's ten more
than anyone else in the league. So they're rarely struggling defensively.
(11:43):
Waterside Quarry they're coming off the back of an excellent
two on win over Next City Rovers. Yea Delaney with
a brace for them keeps them in contention for a
top four. They're kind of beat cool with Napier and
just two points behind Merrimot Rangers. So again probably a
water Side cory would fans for themselves to pick up
a three points and keep a bit of pressure on
the on the top half of the table.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
All right, Wakefield Park three thirty Island Bay against for Tony.
What are you expecting here?
Speaker 3 (12:05):
Yeah, a couple of clubs struggling towards the bottom end
of the table win each for each side so far
this season. Island Bay they lost six to one to
Murma Rangers. They had their captain Jeremy Sutton sent off
after he'd scored earlier in the game, so he had
a pretty eventful one. Unfortunately that means he'll miss this game,
as will Sam Matthews for Potnia, who was also sent
off last week and their four three loss to Upper
(12:27):
Huts so if you see how that plays up. But
you know, two teams down the bottom, but you think
maybe Tony might my face themselves a.
Speaker 1 (12:33):
Little bit more then and just up the road tomorrow
should be a pretty good one Mma Rangers with a
trip up to take on Napi City.
Speaker 3 (12:41):
Yeah, big trip for Mirama. That's probably probably the game
of the round. I think an opportunity there for Miriama
to put a little bit of space on the two. Okay,
it's the two sides in the race for a National
League spot. Mato Buenosod Martin Borno scored four goals and
their six one win over Island Bay last weekend and
Nap you're at home, always challenging, but they have struggled
(13:01):
in the last and they well they're only two games
at home so far. They had to draw with Upper
Heart and a close win against North Wellington. Two sides
down the bottom and the table. So Merrima might see
them as sous as have been an opportunity for three
points in the Sixtra tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (13:14):
All right, looking forward to that one underway up in
the Hawk's Bay tomorrow, Dale great to chat as always,
big weekend of club football for oh several reasons, so
I'll track some of those results through the day. In
chatt again Neick Saturday.
