Speaker 1 (00:00):
Up and down the country this weekend. It's the national
club knockout football competitions. There's second rounds Chatham Cup for
the men, Kate Shepherd Cup for the women. It's the
first round featuring the top tier teams of the year.
So let's go to women's action first and preview the
Kate Shepherd Cup games and it wignoles with us. Wanted you, Hannah,
Good morning, all right, on another busy weekend of action. Hannah.
(00:22):
Let's start a little bit later today with the solitary
game in the women's Central League which is carrying on
as the rest of the teams take place. Take part
in that Kate Shepherd Cup, and that is the Wellington
Phoenix Academy team. Of course, the team in the Central
League League is the under eighteen team and they're taking
on more Todor today at Fraser Park. What do we
expect from this one?
Speaker 2 (00:43):
Well, things aren't getting easier for Motor. They've come off
a heavy defeat against United last week. They lost seven
nil at home. The first and only win of the
season was in round one against Palmerston and Palmerston not United,
and this week, as you've said, they're away at the
and whilst the Knicks have been only picking up tight results.
(01:04):
They are a fast style of play and they'll be
looking to cement another when Motor traditionally struggle when they
play away and for long weekend, and there are additional
complicating factors. Teams often run short on long weekends and
that can really change change how a team performs. So
with the Phoenix second to top and moturo A second
(01:25):
to bottom, i'd expect it to be a comfortable when
for the next All.
Speaker 1 (01:29):
Right, so that one underway at twelve thirty the safternoon
and we'll go to the Kate Shepherd Cup. Now four
games featuring Wellington based teams across the weekend, and the
reason that the Phoenix under eighteen teams still have that
game in the Central League is because the Phoenix have
the women's reserves team and the Kate Shepherd Cup. And
we'll start with their game, Hannah. They've got the trip
up to Parmeston North Morris but later this morning eleven thirty.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
Yeah, the Cup represents a really good opportunity for teams
in the lower leagues to take a crack at a
really tough, good opponent and so this is kind of
the pattern we'll see for all the Kate Shepherd Cup games,
this game in particular is being played in Palmerston North
and it's perhaps palmers North Marrit's only advantage. They're coming
(02:14):
off a close win against Palmerston North United and so
they'll be in high spirits. But it will be their
toughest game of the season and they'll know this. So
with the right attitude from the coaches and players, they
should come into this game with a plan and a
belief that they can execute it. Upsets are possible, so
with a bit of luck, we could see something. If
(02:39):
I look back at the Phoenix reserves in twenty twenty four,
they played in the Women's National League and they only
finished ninth out of ten on the ladder. We know
that there'll be a lot of movement of players coming
in and out of this reserve squad, so it doesn't
necessarily indicate the result, but I do think it's going
to be a very very tough day at the office Forrest.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
All right, we will see and probably also preparing for
a tough day this game tomorrow. Yeah. Katah Tannga up
at their home ground on the Carpety Coast there, they've
got the unbeaten team from twenty twenty five so far.
Wellington United a special day though for the visitors too.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
Yeah, this will be a really interesting game up the
coast and Ti Kotakitanga will hold their own, but as
a Premier League side, I would say they'll struggle against United.
In particular, United's backline is very hard to break down
and they we know that they score goals, goals on
goals and goals. United are also used to playing on
(03:37):
grass and I think with the Kate Shepherd Cup being
in the club's blood, they've had a taste for two
finals and they'll be wanting to reach a third. I
think they are going to really show up. There is
a chance for TK, however, they've scored a lot of
their goals from corners and including direct from corners, not
(03:58):
just knock ons, so I think we could see an
early goal from TK in the form of a corner
and that could shake the game up. But it is
United to win. It's a really exciting week for one
player in particular, Gemma Robertson. She'll be playing her two
hundredth game for United. Jemma is one of the most
versatile players on the pitch She's currently playing in the
(04:20):
back line right back wing back this season. However, she
is known for her ability as an out and out
winger and she thoroughly deserves all the celebrations that he'll
await her. It's an incredible milestone and it couldn't happen
to a nicer player. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:35):
Great, congratulations to her for the milestone and I'm sure
the Wellington United team will be playing for Jimma today.
So yeah, one thirty kick off up the coast for
that one tomorrow. Also tomorrow afternoon at two Mirama Rangers
at home at David Farrington hosting Victoria University.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
Yep, this will be probably one of the most interesting
games of the week. They're very even in the league
and they met in round two. The score was nil all,
so as you can imagine, it was a battle of
the midfields. Both teams will show up for this game.
We think Merma have the upper hand as it's the
home game for them and they've got momentum delivering a
(05:14):
few stand up performances of late last week they held
the Phoenix Under eighteens at Bay only losing one nil
when we anticipated a far bigger goal difference that on
the other hand, are coming off a string of heavy
defeats and they tend to struggle against teams who move
the ball well. I think general consensus among my football
(05:35):
paers is that Merrima will take the win. However, this
game could go either way.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
All right, two o'clock tomorrow for that one. Then wrapping
up the weekend's action from a Wellington perspective at two
thirty tomorrow out at Maidstone Park Upheart City, our home
against the Waterside Grory. I guess a cross league game,
so a typical contest we often get in these early rounds.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
Yep, yep exactly, and again a good chance for lower
ranked teams to have a crack at those tougher opponents.
Could Ordi have been showing up strong in the Central League,
whereas upper Huts in this case have been struggling for
results in the prems. It's useful to kind of look
back on teams and how quickly they score goals within
(06:19):
a game. You know the pattern of play, and for Kurori,
they typically score most of their goals in the first half,
so if they go ahead, they'll likely go ahead. Early
last week they played Vic. It was five MIL and
four of their goals were in the first half. When
they played Merrimat they won seven to one. Six of
(06:39):
their goals are in the first half, so if Upper
Hut can hold Koori out, we may see them panic. However,
I think it will be Corordi's game wonderful.
Speaker 1 (06:50):
All right, Well, there are the four games across the
way hand and the Kate Shpard Can't featuring local teams,
and of course other matches happening right around the country
as well. So busy long weekends for all the top
men's football players from around the country. I had a
great to catch up as always, thanks for your thorough
report on things and you have a great weekend.
Speaker 2 (07:06):
Too, thank you very much.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
Continuing with our local football coverage we go across to
the Men's Now and the Chatham Cup. The long running
event has its rounds two this weekend as well around
New Zealand, and plenty of games featuring Wellington teams, so
to look ahead to those. Dale Warburton with us wanting
to you Dale, good morning again, righty oh well, always
an exciting time, isn't it? Just remind us Dale, this
(07:29):
is very much the early phase of the competition, isn't
it Where we are seeing some of those top teams
into the fold.
Speaker 3 (07:36):
Yeah, it's been a couple of rounds of slowly introduction
introducing some of the teams in lower divisions and some
have been obviously knocked out. And I think it's the
first round before the Central League teams in here. So
we're basically down to the last sixteen in the Wellington
area and we sort of slowly creep down as we
go through the rounds.
Speaker 1 (07:57):
Yeah, dude, all right, let's get into the games and
we'll start off with first one chine logically one o'clock
this afternoon at the Boyd Wilson to Victoria University and
Palmerston North United.
Speaker 3 (08:07):
Yeah, it's Victoria New who had done pretty well taped
through so far. They've beaten lower Hut one in the
first class one round and then followed followed that out
work for three to win an extra time over Douglas
follow Hurts and Marston Based. Both of those you would
consider upsets as they play in the division above. Victu
Vicuni in cat prim which is kind of coll into
(08:27):
the third third third tier league in Wellington and Palms
North Yeah United there in Centrally two, which is the
second tier so another one where the victor vikw the
Koreans will go in as underdogs Palms North United. They
qualified with a big ten to one win over our
(08:48):
Western United of New Plumbus ben more against six goals
in that route. But yeah, to be another interest to
see whether Unique can cause another upset in the second round.
Speaker 1 (08:58):
And all Central League affair, but probably still a little
bit far apart these two teams, Upper Hut City hosting
Western Suburbs.
Speaker 3 (09:05):
Yeah, the first of four centrally all Central League games,
which a bit of surprising this early in the rounds.
As you say, West are up and first and a
pretty reasonable season, the Upperhart struggling down at ninth. Both
teams have had by so far. This is their first
game in the Central League and they did They did
play each other in the league just two weeks ago,
(09:25):
West running out very comfortable for five winners in that game,
So you'd expect West to be pretty pretty confident going
into that one. Out to Maidstone Part two.
Speaker 1 (09:35):
O'clock kick off there. Wellington maris hosting Mirima Rangers.
Speaker 3 (09:39):
Yeah, Mirrima'll going to that one's very strong favorites. Marist
upset Tara in the first round they're down in Capitol
Premier year, so at third tier again they're kind of
struggling down there too as well. They're in eighth, so
they're just one place above Merrima's reserve team who they
beat three to earlier in the season. I say Merrima's
first entry into the Central into the Channel Cup. They're
(10:02):
up and second in the Central League, so full two
divisions above, So you think Mariamar should have no issues
there all.
Speaker 1 (10:08):
Right, and well not across the league game stop Out
against Sto and a hut Park.
Speaker 3 (10:13):
Yeah, both both sides play in Central League too, which
is the second tier, and just two points separate both
of them. Stop Out in fourth on twelve points into
seventh on ten points. Stop about comfortably comfortably beat nine
nine nine Nils in the first round. Drum Type scored
a hatchet for that one C two and they had
a much closer result they had. They beat one nil,
(10:36):
which already Mansford with the goal the winner and that
one stop out and won the league ficture between these
two sides four nil earlier earlier this month, so you'd
expect stop Out to be perhaps a couple favorites in
that one too.
Speaker 1 (10:48):
Hot Park the venue for that at two o'clock at
two thirty at Johnsonville, North Wellington hosting Island Bay.
Speaker 3 (10:54):
Yeah, the second of an all Central League affair. Island
teams kind of struggling towards the bottom end. Island Bay
eighth on eight points, North being from winners and last
place on just the two points. They have played each
other so fun in this league. It was a three
to three entertaining game in the first round of the season,
which is about all the goals came in the first half.
I think I think five of them came in the
(11:16):
first half back in March. But you dick, Yeah, one
of the ones where could go either way. But perhaps
Island Bay will be slight favorites given a slightly better
league performance so far.
Speaker 1 (11:29):
And then it's three. Pretty tough draw for Patoni again.
They've got the inform and pretty dominant Central League leaders
of Wellington.
Speaker 3 (11:37):
Olympic Yeah, and also defending champions. They beat Aukland City
last year in the final on penalties after it was
one one after extra time. Yes, they say, Olympic. Yeah,
they're in first place. They dropped their first points last
weekend with the door open Napier and Naper Platonian sevens
with just the two wins. It was a pretty tight
(12:00):
year between these two times, two sides in the league.
It was three to two back in April. The Olympic
were up three nil earlier in that game before Potany
pulled a couple of goals back. But again, you think
Olympic should be pretty strong favorites in that one, all right.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
And then what about Palmas and North Maris hosting water
Side Krory. They'll be Watersidechory Hiving for a sort of
pretty decent trip up there.
Speaker 3 (12:22):
Yeah, you think so that the division above, but it's
kind of one of those ones where perhaps there might
be a bit of an upset briwin here. I think
Palmas North marrit there in Central League two there in Sex,
they've had some pretty mixed results in the league. They
did beat going to be at Athletic too the first
round to qualify through they came to have four recards
and three to Palms sort of Marise. I don't know
(12:43):
what was going on there, but well so koury as
I saying. In Central League the whole division above, they've
had pretty mixed results in the league, with three wins
three draws, and three losses. So yeah, Kory, we were
going to favorites for that one, but if they they
take it a bit lightly and passed off Marius might
beck themselves for further an upset.
Speaker 1 (13:02):
Yeah, and one coming up tomorrow, Dale, And that's probably
the most exciting one and certainly probably the hardest to
pick right Wellington Phoenix reserves team. The trip up to
Napier City Rovers.
Speaker 3 (13:11):
Yeah, absolutely the last of the Central League games. Yeah,
to say Running Phoenix and third and third and Napier
City three points back and forth, so it could be
quite anyone. Running Phoenix won their league game two or
but that was down and down in Willington, so they
had to do make that big trip up to Napier
(13:33):
tomorrow for it. And in Naper I'll be buoyed by
the fact they took their first points off walnership at
last weekend with the one all draw up there. So yeah,
certainly one that could go either way and may even
go to extra time or penalties.
Speaker 1 (13:46):
Yeah, we'll be interesting to a clock kickoff up there
in Napier tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (13:49):
Dale.
Speaker 1 (13:50):
Thanks for the thorough preview of all those games featuring
Wellington teams. Of course, dozens and dozens of games right
across the country as part of the Chatham Cups of
Dale will touch base again Talking Central Leagnis appreciate your.
