Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let's talk local football now, because there's still a lot
of Wellington based teams in the national club knockout competitions
for the women sixteen teams are left in the Kate
Shepherd Cup heading into this third round, So we bring
in Hannah Wignell now to look ahead to the weekend's
action in that and a couple of Central League games
as well.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Morty, Hannah, good morning.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
Give us a bit of a background as to a
Saturday morning when it's been so wet all week. How
do you how to sort of our top players here
in Wellington prepare for wet weather football.

Speaker 3 (00:31):
Well, I think there is always the nervousness that the
game's gonna get shifted, and it really happens in the
Central League. They do all they can to keep the
games on, but there is that nervousness of that is
it going to go ahead? And I think it can
play with your play with your head a little bit
in terms of prep and like readiness to get out

(00:51):
onto the field. I think that's a big, big factor.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
Yes, I hope everyone stays safe in the soggy conditions. Right, Well,
let's go to the Kate Shepherd Cup now. Third rounds
underway already quite a surprise result last night. The Wellington
Phoenix women's reserves too strong for Wellington United, so former
winners Wellington United are outs. One nill was the score
under lights at Newtown Park last night, the goal for

(01:14):
the Phoenix coming in the sixty eighth minute through Siena Candy.
So yeah, big result for the Wellington Phoenix team had.
Let's go to today's action though in the other game
featuring local teams and this one should also be interesting.
Waterside Carori up against Mirramar Rangers and this one has
we moved to the turf out at Potoni.

Speaker 3 (01:32):
Yeah yep. So Mirror Mars offered a defeat last week
to a ten women Palmerston North United, and I want
to just talk about that a little bit because Parmeson
North is sitting bottom of the table and they knew
that it was a major game for them and they
needed to get some points this season and Merrimat was
a good team to do that against, and to give
them credit, they did. With ten women, Mirror Mars stay

(01:56):
on five points and Parmerston North United bunny hopped them
to six in the lead and are now on six points.
As I said, before last week Caarroti's game was rained off,
so they've got fresh legs and they'll be coming in
full noise to this game. Coori A top form their
third in the table and they'll be looking for a
big score. Merrima have the ability to hold out top

(02:16):
teams and score points late on, but stamina is required
for the Central League, and I know from personal experience
that as the season wears on, some teams and players
get fitter and stronger, and others start to feel the
effects of the high intensity trainings and games. The game
is played on turf at Paterni and therefore it'll be

(02:38):
a really quick game. So we'll see this week if
Merrima can hold keep up and hold hold their own
or whether the wh they're starting to feel the intensity
of the league so to speak.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
Yeah, great, all right, looking forward to that one eleven
o'clock kickoff and to the Central League. Obviously, several teams
not playing in the Catch shipped cup across the weekend,
so they've got games as usual and at one o'clock today.
I also on a turf at Victoria University, but of
course that's the home ground anyway. They're hosting for tiny.

Speaker 3 (03:07):
Yeah. Another defeat last week for vic Unie. They went
down three nil to Palms to North. Marra's teams often
have slump periods within a season and vic do have
depth in depth and experience in their squad, so I
think that they can tighten up and fix their mistakes
and they can bounce back from this, but they are

(03:28):
currently in a big slump po Toni are also coming
off the back of a rained out game. As the
the Courori comment before, they'll be looking to up their
goal difference should the race to the top of the
table get close towards the end of the season, and
we know Tony have it in them to score lots
and lots of goals. Peppi Oliver Bell is currently fourth

(03:49):
in the Golden Boot Laver Ladder. They have a strong
midfield that supports them with a really dynamic attack. The
match is being played at Vicuni's home ground. It's a
tight pitch and it's easy for set pieces, so we
could see Patney concede one or two. I think this
will be a really good game to watch.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
All right, well one pm at the BOYD Wilson Turf
and then tomorrow wrapping up the weekend's action for the
Central League Taradale against the Matsuro and I guess despite
there not being Wellington based teams Hannah, there'll been a
lot of interest in I guess A the relegation race
and B I guess Taradale potentially getting some important mid
table points.

Speaker 3 (04:24):
Yes, this game is being played in Napier at Taradale's
home pits, so you can imagine that they'll have the
home advantage. Motu have to travel the span of the
North Island to play the game. They'll be used to travel,
but that's got to be tough for any team. Taradale
I know again from experience playing up there a number

(04:46):
of times. Their supporters are avid Avid fans and it
can really affect the opposition team's focus. Taradale are coming
off the back of a four n loss to Patny
Mota coming off the back of a three defeat to
the Phoenix More one need to win this game. They're
currently bottom of the table with one win and three points.

(05:07):
I expect this game to be hard fought and at
times scrappy, especially if one team takes the lead early.
I would give the win to Taradale with the home
advantage but I don't think it's a Dundale.

Speaker 1 (05:19):
All right, well we will see how that pans out
eleven thirty tomorrow for that one. Great to catch up.
Had a big weekend of football across both the Central
League and Kate shepperd Cups, so we we'll scam those
results over the weekend and chadighan Nex Saturday. See you
then share we go across to the day's action and
Premium men's football. Dale Warburton back with us morning to
your Dale, good morning game, and we're back talking at

(05:41):
Chatham Cup this weekend. Yes, it's into round three the
national club knockouts competition and Dale like yes, you'll start
to now see some top teams or ones that could
often go quite fast start to be eliminated over the
next couple of rounds.

Speaker 2 (05:55):
Yeah, still a few rounds before they get into the
national stage of it. But yes, six certain teams saw
they're all face playing each other and then too Central
League two teams, So I have an opportunity to go
a little bit deeper into the Cup than perhaps they
were expecting at the start of the season.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
All right, let's start with the day's action two o'clock
waterside to Rory supposedly hosting Wellington Olympic and like Guestyle,
because of the weather, this has been moved to the
turf at to a Tony memorial. So yeah, trip north
for both teams and of course Olympic coming off for
a bit of disappointment from last week in the Central League.

Speaker 2 (06:26):
Yeah, Toney Moore not really a home home home pitch
for Waterside Corey, that's for sure. It's probably the up
the ends of the the city. Yeah, as you say,
but both had very comfortables to get into the third
round water So Cory had a four and a one
over pasta on North Merritt and then Wannington Olympic had
three and all over for Tony. But you say both
are coming off league losses. Olympic will be smarting from

(06:49):
their from their loss to Miramar Rangers when they went
down three to one. It's their first Central League lossince
April last year, which I believe is about twenty five games.
So they had a hell of a run but obviously
got to by Miramar last weekend. What to say, cry
they went down for one last weekend. Lucas Halliyakis's own
scorer for them as they went down to Tony Wellings

(07:10):
Olympic come obviously a good reign of performance in the center.
In the Chatham Cup, they won it last year and
they're looking to I guess, to be first back to
back one of the other Cups since Cashmere did in
twenty thirteen and twenty fourteen. To themselves, they've also they've
gone three times as well the Chim Cup, but not
since nineteen forty nine and it's been a long time

(07:31):
between drinks for them. Probably unlikely to break that drought,
but you'd think Willis Olympic should be pretty strong favorites
going to that one, and they did beat Croy five
mil in the league earlier in the season.

Speaker 1 (07:41):
Also at so Naper City Rovers have the trip down
to take on Mirramar Rangers and looks like, hell, this
one's been moved to Martin Lucky a turf.

Speaker 2 (07:50):
Is this one mad like? Not actually too but probably
one of the best pictures in the country that doesn't
get a lot of weekend actions. So yeah, it's probably
a pretty good condition, probably better than David farrynch and
that's for sure. Two sides who have storied histories in
the Chatham Cup. Naple City Rovers they won at five times,
the last pretty recent back in twenty nineteen. Miramar four
time winners, the last further back in twenty ten. Both

(08:14):
had pretty comfortable wins to get through to this to
this round, Miramar being Maras eight nil and then Napier
rolled Wellington Phoenix three to one. Accidentally, it was these
two sides played each other in the Cup last last
year in the round of sixteen and Naple City Rose
won that one in a close battle in Napier have
also beaten them three nil in the League at home

(08:35):
just as recently as last month. So interesting to see
how that one goes. With Mirima coming up for the
excellent win over Winton Olympic Martin bour and I scored
a brace for them to close the gap with the Olympic.
But yeah, it could be pretty type battle out for
that one, and prepotentially one that goes beyond ninety minutes.

Speaker 1 (08:52):
All right, we'll wait and see there. Wakefield Park Island
Bay up against Western Suburbs.

Speaker 2 (08:57):
Yeah, Western Suburbs pretty good, strong history right the recently
gives in the Channel Cup there three times winners, the
last back in two thousand and six. Island Bay have
never won it and I'm doing pretty confident say they
weren't changed this year. They did beat north Fields pretty
comfortably last round to get through, whereas West required extra
trying to get past slowly Upper Hut Island. Bay did

(09:19):
win this fixture in the league between the two sides
not too long ago, Charlie Hale with a penalty ten
minutes for four times, enough for ale Vata to keep
that one to win over West. But you think despite that,
probably West will be the favorites going into that one,
despite being away from home at Wakefield Park.

Speaker 1 (09:37):
All right, that one at two thirty the stats I
don't then tomorrow at two o'clock wrapping up the Wellington
based teams and actions stop out with the trip up
to Parmes and North United.

Speaker 2 (09:46):
Yeah, interesting one both sides. They're in centrally tooth and
division below the I think other six sides we've talked
about and just one point separated them in that league
Palmas North Math, so they don't know a bit of
a grouping of MASSI University, Palmerston North End and one
or two Red Sox, a bit of a plumbration there
for to find a first team that's relatively competitive. These

(10:09):
two sides did play a little draw out in the league,
but that was way back in April. Stop Out. They're
in previd runner form at moment. They beat fellow Central
League two sides seating Sex Milo in the league to
get through to the third round and they're currently on
a nine game unbeaten run, so despite being they're closing
the table. Perhaps Stop that will be the favorites ones

(10:31):
to come back from Palmerston North with to get into
the fourth round.

Speaker 1 (10:34):
All right, that'll be a good result for them. We'll
watch with interest across the weekend. Thanks for your time
as always, Dale, and we'll be back next week. Cooler
