Speaker 1 (00:00):
News talks.
Speaker 2 (00:00):
They'd be on the Allsport Breakfast twenty nine past eight.
It's Round two of Rugby's NPC. This weekend DAN for
the Wellington Lions. It was an opening round loss to
Canterbury and Potty Do a last weekend DAN. Today they
traveled up to meet one of the round one winners,
the White Cut the Mulus. That game in Hamilton this
afternoon from two now for the Lions today, no captain
(00:20):
Brad Shields, he's out after his head knock during the
game last week. No starting half back from last week
Kyle Preston either, he's absent two after his impressive call
up to the All Blacks. So Judy and Savia to
skip at the team. Not a bad shift of captaincy.
A few options there with a lot of experience in
this Lions team. And a milestone for the Wellington Lions
(00:41):
today with loose forward he can play lock as well.
Caleb Delaney marking his fiftieth appearance for the Wellington Lions.
So Caleb joins us now from Hamilton, looking ahead to
the game. Morning to your Caleb, and congratulations on the
milestone mate, Pretty significant, I think considering you know MPC
seasons are relatively short, so I'm sure it's a it's
a mulstone yet you're pretty proud of.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
Yeah, definitely. I mean to get to get one game
as a dreams, so fifty pretty unreal to me. I
think I've been pretty lucky with injuries as well. It's
only ten regular season games to get fifty. Yeah, pretty crazy.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
Yeah nice, And you know you've you've been in Wellington
that whole time through a very successful period of the
Wellington lines as well. Just tell us about I guess
about you know, the journey you've had coming from as
a very young player now a mainstay of the team
and obviously you know, probably one of the leaders in
the environment too.
Speaker 3 (01:32):
Yeah. So came up to Wellington and twenty eighteen from Nelson,
it just tripped away, got through the academy and managed
the debut in twenty twenty for the Lions. And yeah,
it's going well, fifty games now, It's pretty pretty unreal
to me. I didn't think it was possible, but stuck
at it.
Speaker 1 (01:52):
Yeah great, and how nice has it been?
Speaker 2 (01:53):
You know, been part of of some of the success
that's that's come with you know, being a Wellington line
obviously a couple of titles in the mix there.
Speaker 3 (02:00):
Yeah, one two from two actually, so I'm pretty proud
of that. But yeah, hopefully one more this year.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
Tell us about sort of I guess the group's come
back together for twenty twenty five. Obviously a standout season
last year, another title. As you said, what has kind
of been the focus all the sort of differences of
this campaign as you've got ready for twenty twenty five.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
Yeah, there's been a bit of a change up in
the coaching staff, which is good. Some fresh faces here
and yeah, some new learning for the boys just been
good as well. I think we've got the four pack
to dominate the other teams and then the star power
up white. So just have to stick to our game
and now the basics, the kerry clean and the physical
(02:43):
side of it. And yeah, I'm sure we'll do well
this weekend and hopefully when the time.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
Yeah, nice tough, tough loss against Canterbury. Obviously, guys you
were in that game for quite some time. They pulled
away towards the end there with the couple of tries
to seal the result. How have you guys reflected on
on how things played out at Potty Apart last weekend.
Speaker 3 (03:01):
Yeah, tough, tough loss on Actually we we thought we
were the better team but didn't execute an Aaron twenty two.
I think we dominated most of the stats, so some
some easy factions there. We're just going to hold onto
the ball and mix it well.
Speaker 2 (03:17):
Out of our twenty to as well, and losing Brad
during that game obviously without him this weekend as well,
not just obviously a scrum partner of yourself, but also
that the captain of the team.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
How much has that loss been felt just through the
weekend things.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
Yeah, obviously a great player, Brad, but no, there's another
boys stepping up in that area, especially in the fowards.
So yeah, it'll be tough without them, but we should
be sweet.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
And Julian Savia are taking over the captain seat. Does
he try and get in the middle there and tell
you you forwards out how to run things or does
he sort of stick to stick to us his own
workout there in the back line.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
The forwards, he'll however, say, but they stick to the backs,
And yeah, we've got some good forward leaders in there now,
so yeah, he's a great skip of thy Yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
Nice. A lot of people, a lot of the guys
in the team have talked about, you know, how quickly
it all came together this year. I know, with like
the Hurricanes, you guys are training through the summer and
then finally getting underway instead of February March. I believe
it was quite a sort of quick start from when
you first got together as a group to game one
last weekend.
Speaker 3 (04:16):
Yeah, it's real ross, real ross campaign. Pre season, I
think we had one hit out and then straight into it.
So every team's the same and it's the team that
can adapt the fastest and take those learnings the first
few weeks carried on for the rest of the.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
Season in terms of you know that the forward pack
and this is probably for Super Rugby as well. You've
become a regular starter of both for the Hurricanes and
Wellington lines, but their positions when there's always a lot
of depth arounds, there's a lot of young guys coming through.
How do you maintain your you know, just making sure
that you are sort of one of the first choices.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
When the coaches are laying out their team for the week.
Speaker 3 (04:51):
Yeah, I think they look at everything. The coaches, how
you go through the week and how you train. It's
not just what you put on the field. But I
think just simplifying what your core role is and executing
that and then anything on top of that is obviously great.
But yeah, just nailing the core role.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
And Peter Larkey obviously had a frustrating into to Super
Rugby a couple of injuries. How nice has it been
sharing duties with him? There's the first round one last
weekend and obviously heading into this weekend's game too.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
Yeah awesome they have them back from injury. I think
he's gone going to the All Black Tour soon, so
we'll make the most of time this week and then yeah,
see if we can get them back later on.
Speaker 1 (05:29):
Yeah nice. I mean how much do people like him?
Speaker 2 (05:32):
And having sort of some other guys that have had
that black jersey experience, how much has that sort of
changed things up? Obviously Ruben Love and the team last
week and you lost Kyle Preston as well has been
called up to the national team.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
Yeah, that's obviously a massive confidence boos having those boys back.
They bring plenty of physicality and energy that the other
boys sort of drive off. Yeah, it's going to be
a big loss when we lose KP and SI. To
make the most of when they get them back, and
when they go other boys will step as well.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
Amazing how things change in rugby, isn't it.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
You know a year ago he'd just come off that
title with ol Boys University sort of you know, struggle
to struggle to start sometimes at NPC, and here he
is flying away with the Avs.
Speaker 3 (06:11):
That's crazy. It happens pretty quick. Just one good seasons
all you need. But N's he's always been at that level.
He just needed an opportunity to shut and he's done
that now.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
So yeah, absolutely, white Cutter. What are you What are
you expecting from them? That had a pretty interesting hopening
round went over over Auckland to start the competition a
week and a bit ago. Yeah, what's what's kind of
the expectation is your head up to Hamilton?
Speaker 3 (06:35):
Yeah, I think they're going to come through us up
front and I've got some stars out wide, so we've
just got to take that physicality to them. They're going
to stay in at the whole eighty as well, seeing
that last twenty minutes and the weekend that's where they
really thrive. So if we can get out to a
good lead and hold it, I'm confident we'll get a
job done.
Speaker 2 (06:52):
And Caleb a bit of time with the Malory All
Blacks again this year. How you special as being part
of that team again for you in twenty twenty five
and has it helped you your rugby this year do
you think so with some developments and different experiences.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
Yeah, there was an awesome campaign. Means a lot to
me and my family to make that team and definitely
a step up was a winter Japan for a week
and then expect to song today had a tough loss
to Scotland that I learned a lot and had a
lot of fun.
Speaker 2 (07:19):
As were nice and just just finally kind of how
does the NPC kind of compliments you know what you're
doing with Super Rugby and your focus is with the
Hurricanes obviously completely different set up, completely different coaches, but
does it give your benefits as your sort of eye
into to twenty twenty six next year?
Speaker 3 (07:35):
Yeah, it kind of gives you a chance to really
work on what you want to get it right for
Super and for me getting some time at number six
rather than just lock. I think it's going to benefit
me greatly just round the field and stuff. So it
can be the option for the Canes if they need
but yeah, just working on, need to work on to
the next ten weeks.
Speaker 2 (07:56):
Awesome, Cada Pable, congratulations on the milest I hope it's
celebrated accordingly and I'm sure you're hope you can celebrate
it with a wind up and up in Hambleton this weekend.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
