Speaker 1 (00:01):
Seven past seven on a sunny Saturday morning across the
Wellington region here on Newstalks. 'd bet it's great to
have your company here on the All Sports Breakfast. And
it is the final rounds this weekend in both the
men's and women's Central League football competition for twenty twenty five.
So after today the national league spots will be confirmed
and the teams heading down a grade will also be
(00:23):
confirmed as well well once to playoff for promotion relegation
will be confirmed. So lots to be played for through
the course of the day. Let's start with the men's
competition and find out what matches are Ahit, Dale Warburton
is our correspondent to's with us. Now morning to you, Dale.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
You good morning.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
A game all right, well into the final round of Dale.
All these games today is part of the final round
or kickoff at very similar times either two thirty or
three in fact just the one to three o'clock game.
The rest underway at half past two this afternoon, Dale,
what in particular are you looking at heading into this
final round when you cast your eye over the table mostly.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
Towards the bottom. Olympic wrapped up another title last weekend
and all the National League spots are already set and done,
so there's not much to really talk about at the top.
So it's down the bottom and there's really two teams
and it's can't keep three. I suppose North Wellington down
the bottom if Island Batus above them in upper huts,
(01:19):
so to those tames play each other, so it's a
bit on the line in that one. That's mostly a
relegation battle this weekening.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
Yeah all right, and let's go to game number one
on our list, and it is the champions Wellington Olympic
up against the team that will probably be pretty disappointed
Dale and missing out on the National League Napier City Rovers.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
Yeah, I think they will be. I mean, it was
always going to be a battle for those other couple
of National League spots as I say, nope, but maybe
you don't really have much to play for after missing
out on that after one last weekend, they'll probably look
back on the season and rue sort of five game
patch in the middle of the of the season where
they went winless, so they kind of turned around towards
(01:59):
the back end, but they left had a bit too
much to catch up and with a pretty strong form
in the back half of the season for Olympic. They're
fresh offs, ferming their fifth straight Essential League title with
the comfortable five and winnover Island Bay, all the goals
coming in the first half there, so they wrapped it
up nice and early and had a good celebration. No
doubt they will have an eye to the Channel Cup
(02:19):
final next weekend, so they might rea a few bodies
ahead of that. I'll see how that plays out, but yeah,
not too much run on that. We think perhaps Peo
will probably be a little bit too strong at home
Waitful Park.
Speaker 1 (02:31):
Yep and Fair the North and Johnsonville, Alex Moore on
the turf, North Wellington and Upper Heart City and that
relegation clash you talk.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
About, Yeah, easily the game of the game of the
round in that one whoops out case it's North Wellington.
When that they are safe, they looked up above Upper
Heart if they do that, so they'll be looking at that.
We'll do a pretty impetitive turn around if that ends
up happening, because they were they've been a license round
four and I didn't win a game in their first eight.
(02:59):
But they'll they'll take some confidence out of out of
a two two draw with one to Phoenix last weekend
when they scored twice in the last fifteen minutes or
so to secure a point. A draw will likely see
them relegate unless Ireland Bay lose by six goals against
Western Suburbs. That's not out of the rounds of possibility.
(03:22):
But for Upper Heart they just don't They just don't
need to lose. Even lost, that might likely be fine
as Island Bay is below them and unlikely to win
that game. So it was a pretty tight a fear
between these two sides in the season. Upper Hut scored
in andrew time to win four to three. So I
definitely want to watch there at Alix Moore.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
All right, Western Suburbs back Home Ant and Deva Park
and they've got to Island Bay second to bottom.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
Yeah, probably a game of wordth of notes here. I
guess Island Bay there to say, pretty pretty vulnerable. You'd
think they're probably unlikely to win or draw against West
given I guess the relative table position of the two sides.
But having said that that they to beat them one
nel winner in the season, but since then, Islibey have
lost six of their last eight games and only won once,
(04:07):
So you think the best chance of svove for them
is not to lose heavily to West and hope that
North Wellington don't win for West. They secured that National
League spot with their comfortable three nor win over up Hut.
All those goals came in the second half to return
them back to Nationhalleague after missing out last season, so
you'd think they've been really pretty confident mood there. I
didn't ever part suttenly.
Speaker 1 (04:27):
Okay, what a side Carrory and Wellington Phoenix reserves. I
guess not much riding on this game other than pride, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:35):
Not at all. I guess what's Corus ended stumbling towards
the end of the season. They've won just once the
last eleven games in the league, and they took an
eight to one battering at the hands of Mirramar Rangers
last weekend. It's now six games they've conceded more than
five goals in a game, so they have taken some
big losses this season. They've somehow managed to secure National
(04:56):
League spot sorry Central expot for next season, so next
they'll be a good chance to pop ahead of nape Perth.
They win when today the drums to fourth and they'll
be annoyed that they let's lift that turn leader against
Norfolk last weekend, but do you think they shouldn't have
too many problems out there at Corey.
Speaker 1 (05:14):
Park indeed, so all right? And then wrapping things up,
Patni up against the National League Bounds Murma Rangers.
Speaker 2 (05:23):
Yeah. Muramo had had seven different scores in that eight
one win over Watersarah cor and they locked them into
a second place, which I think they'll be pretty pretty
happy worth considering they're a bit lower down last year.
They did welcome back our top score of much and
in that game, so they'll be tough to have them
back for the National League in a couple of weeks time.
(05:43):
But Toni came back from nape Pier with a big
five to one lost the next to their name. They're
four nil downe at halftime before the game kind of
evened out on the scoring front. It look like Patonio
will almost certainly finished in sixth position, which they'll be
pretty happy. But they were flirting with relegation for long
periods of the time, which perhaps they won't be happy
with it. But you'd think cameramand there should be pretty confident.
Speaker 1 (06:04):
Tony brilliance well plenty to play for a lot of
those games and pride for the rest of them. So
I appreciate the wrap up, Dale, and well, I'm sure
we'll be looking to chat maybe Chatham Cup next weekend,
so I appreciate your time as always.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
Yeah, I check to you.
Speaker 1 (06:18):
Then, continuing our look at Central League football heading into
the day, let's look at the final round of the
women's competition, and correspondent Hannah Wignell is with us. Morning
to you, Hannah, good morning. To have a players approach
the final round, I mean for some teams is a
lot riding on it at both ends of the table.
Others that sort of play for pride. What will have
(06:39):
teams have been going through these last couple of days
building up to this one.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
Yeah, I think I think for a lot of players,
if I'm really honest, they'll be tired. You know, this
is the eighteenth game league game this season, and they've
had many more in the build up and through cup games,
and I think they will be tired. So part of
them will be looking forward to the rest coming up,
(07:04):
but for a number of players they won't even be
thinking about that, especially in these there's a couple of
really clinch games that we'll talk about. So for them
it'll be full noise, full adrenaline, and they'll probably have
a level of come down on Sunday or Monday, and
that their employers will probably see that.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
Indeed.
Speaker 1 (07:27):
All right, well before then we'll get to the games
and eleven this morning, big one for Waterside Carrii sitting
in that fourth spot but only one point outside the
top three, hitting into the final round that they've got
the Phoenix.
Speaker 4 (07:40):
Yeah, this is.
Speaker 3 (07:41):
Going to be a really tough match for Karori. It's
still die for them. As you know, it's a tight,
tight race between Kori and Toni for who gets there
in the league and that National League spot. Cordori had
a convincing win last week against ck CuNi. They won
six to one, Renee Bacon getting a hat trick. However,
Toni also won last week. As it currently stands one
(08:03):
point above them. Karori really really need to win this game.
Battoni need to draw at minimum or lose.
Speaker 4 (08:16):
For Karori to get that third place spot.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
So yeah, they have to give it or all and
and see what happens in the Batoni game. For the Phoenix,
they're seeing out the season comfortably in second place. But
they won't want to be giving up anything.
Speaker 4 (08:31):
In this match.
Speaker 3 (08:32):
They won last week five no against Mirima. The game
is being played at Karori, which will be a small advantage.
I expect there will be one goal in this game
and because of the season consistency, on paper, you'd give
it to the Phoenix. However, you know, the motivation does
sit with Karori. It'll be a really really good game
to watch.
Speaker 1 (08:52):
Wonderful And speaking of that Patoni game, which is all important,
it's on at the very same time, so no advantage
one way or the other to team was already knowing
a result before it matters. And it is Patni at
home against Vicini.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
Yeah, Patoni in that fight for the national league spot.
They have a slightly easier home stretch. They're playing, of course,
bottom of the table vic given their league placing currently,
they have the advantage and.
Speaker 4 (09:24):
So you'd say that that third place spot is there
to lose.
Speaker 3 (09:27):
Vic remained bottom of the table on eight points and
they've really struggled to get off the bottom and all
this season. Last week Patni played Taradale. It was a
tough game for them, they traveled to Napier, but they
did end up coming away with a two nierl win,
goals to Peppie, Oliver Bell and Sam Hatchwell. It was
Peppy's nineteenth goal of the season, but for Sam it
(09:48):
was her first, which would have felt really really good.
Speaker 4 (09:51):
TONI are a great side.
Speaker 3 (09:52):
They'll keep their composure in this game and they'll be
looking to avoid any notion of a drawer. As you've said,
the games of being played at eleven both could order
game and this game, so teams will be eagerly awaiting
the results of the others. If I'm honest, double expect
lots of goals early from Potni, but we will see.
Speaker 1 (10:14):
Time will tell, all right. There at one motturoa who's
seeking to bottom, so they'll want to be you know,
keeping goals against them at a minimum. And they've got
Palmerston Norsey United as well, who are one spot above them.
Speaker 3 (10:26):
Yeah, so road trip for Palmers North United up to
New Plymouth. Mouturo had a game off last week, so
they'll be looking forward to a final kick around with
somewhat fresh legs. The round before they played Wellington United
and I know it feels funny to say this, but
they only lost two nil and the goals were only
conceded in the last ten minutes, which is actually quite
(10:49):
an achievement when you're a bottom of the table team
playing top of the table, so they will.
Speaker 4 (10:53):
Be feeling good about that result.
Speaker 3 (10:55):
Palms North United lost a hard fought battle last weekend in.
Speaker 4 (10:58):
Their derby against Palm North Merist. The game finished for
to to Merist. On paper, the game.
Speaker 3 (11:04):
Was pretty even for seventeen minutes, so the United players
may have some quite tired legs coming into this game.
Speaker 4 (11:11):
It'll be a really good game.
Speaker 3 (11:13):
More to raw ninth in the league, needing points to
ensure they stay off the bottom. Palmers North United are
just above them, and they'll be really wanting to prove
a point and finish high up as high up the
table as possible. I've been really impressed with Palmers North
United's fight and determination, especially as they're a new team
to the league this year, So I hope both teams
(11:34):
finish this game and can celebrate all.
Speaker 1 (11:37):
Right, and then two games to wrap up the season
tomorrow Parmesan North Marist hosting Taradale. I guess playing for Pride.
Speaker 3 (11:45):
Yeah yeah, and it's a travel game for Taradale, which
they'll be well well used to but Palmers North Merist
will have that home advantage. As I've just said, Marist
had a really good win last week four two against United.
One achievement from that game for Maris and that the
coach can take away is that four goals were scored
(12:07):
by four different players. And having had to default a
game recently because of lack of players, it's really nice
to see that those in the squad, many in the
squad are capable of hitting the back of the net.
For a lot of teams not relying on that one
star striker is really important. Both of these teams should
be really pleased with their season. Maris currently sit fifth
(12:29):
in the league on twenty five points, Taradale six in
the league on twenty one points. The game won't change
either of the league positions, but it will be really
evenly matched and a great game to watch.
Speaker 1 (12:40):
Wonderful And then wrapping up the season with the winning
team of the Central League, of course, Wellington United travel
cross down to mirramaut Rangers.
Speaker 2 (12:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (12:50):
I mean I don't need to say too much, but
United hamassive achievement and they will want to finish this
season with all wins. Nat Olson and the team is
going to take out the Golden Boot title for this season.
She's currently top of that table. I'm thirty three goals.
(13:13):
But it's worth noting, you know, in terms of the
depth of players that can score, there are three other
players from United in the top ten goal scorers for
this league, so it's not that Nett is on her
own in the United team, and it probably goes a
long way to show that the results through the.
Speaker 4 (13:30):
Results that they've had this season.
Speaker 3 (13:33):
It's a home game for Merrima, so I'd expect they
will encourage a lot of supporters to come down and
I hope the game has a special feel. Merrima have
held their own in a really, really tough league. They're
seventh on twelve points and it's likely that they'll finish thereabouts.
Both Merrima and Palmers North United we're new into the
(13:54):
league this year and for those newer clubs often all
it takes a few really standout games and you can
near enough guarantee your spot in the league for another year.
Speaker 4 (14:05):
So I think they should be really really pleased.
Speaker 3 (14:08):
They could look to Taradale as an example team who
came into the league number of years ago and have
really kind of built year on year to become a
really solid, competitive middle of the table team. So I
do think this game will have a celebration field. No
matter what the result. It's going to be a tough
game for Merima and United. I'll be looking to refine
(14:32):
their tactics, but I really do hope it's a special
felf and they should be proud.
Speaker 1 (14:36):
Yeah, wonderful, brilliant Hanai. Well thanks for that as we
eye up the final round. Obviously still a but a
football to come for some of our top clubs over
the next few months. But appreciate you. I'm filling us
in on the central leg each and that every week.
It's been fantastic, So thank you very much and sure
we'll be chatting soon.
Speaker 4 (14:52):
Yeah, thank you so much.
