Speaker 1 (00:01):
Twenty to eight here on the Old Sport Breakfast, continuing
our National Football League coverage. You had a Round two
and the PA Toni women's team made history last week,
not only their first match in the National League, but
opening with a one neil win over West Coast in
front of home fans. PA Tony's coach Ryan mcglinchy is
with me now morning to you.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
Ryan. That must have been a great moment last week.
Speaker 3 (00:23):
Well for me, there's no sleep the night before like
most games, but yeah, it was a great weekend. Obviously
very historic for the club. Yeah, the first National League game,
first time we played West Coast Rangers, and it was
also the first game of the Nice League for this setting,
so it was quite quite nice for the club. And
the game played out, I guess, yeah, I guess we
(00:46):
played a lot through the ruse that were set in
place in terms of our block and trying to sit
in and then trying to get on the counter. So
the guards just put on a great performance and really
for straight at West Coast Wringers and then we've got
that we were roared on the on the break, so
it was yeah, it was a really special day, Adam,
(01:06):
it was it was great to be part off. And yeah,
the celebrations after we were second and none of it
was Yeah, it was fantastic.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
Yeah, amazing, And that the goal to right back and
time quite light on the pace and that was that
just as a result of of what you mentioned before.
Just frustrating your opponents from from West Coast.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
Yeah, I like to I like to believe, so I
think that the player just before the goal, you were
sitting and sitting in deep on the edge of our
box and just trying to frustrate. And then the aim
is always the kind of keep one player high. This
is the stretch to pitch because you never know what
can happen. And there was a wee bit of window
on the day as well, so with monaged to sit
in frustrate them and then and then you pick up
the scraps to play r nights for him and furness
(01:45):
to her. She just held the line well and West
Coast Rangers pushed up so they left her on her
own inside her own half. So it was a I
would say, an easy chance to teat from the sidelines.
But for Rene, like she's used to, she's done this
for a long time, so it was it was great
to see us on her debut as well.
Speaker 1 (02:01):
Yeah, amazing, And I was gonna ask Wellington. We spoke
to Wellington United last week. They have obviously come into
this league with a few roster changes. Has much changed
with the Patoni team for this National League phase of
the season.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
Well, we've brought in five or six new faces, but
they're they're all Wellington based, unlike most of the teams,
and like Welling United have brought him food from overseas
and whatnot, so we've we've kind of brought a couple
in from Croy like Renee Bacon and Nick Ross. We've
brought a player in from Mira mar and Amy King,
brought a player back from Australia, so Ammy Price, who
(02:37):
went over there just for work at the start of
the year, but she's been pa Toni based for the
last four years. And then we've got a goal keeper
from Tomingos Mars and Leo and a few others have
come in for training players. So it's I feel, yeah,
feeling trainings. It's the most intent it's been all year
and the players are are the reason for that. Like
we've got a good roster, maybe twenty to twenty four
(02:58):
players at the minute and training which is adding that
extra intensity and competition. So it's really great to see
that we when I have that at the club because
that's been the goal is to try and create that
that place for the players to have competition and develop
those players as well. So yeah, it's nice to.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
See, yeah, exactly, and juggling fitness levels and I guess
just physicality because it's a long season, isn't it. And
we're into October now the season started way back in
what March? How do you sort of manage workloads and
things taping that in mind.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
Oh, it keeps going in the football never sleeps for surely. Yeah,
it's man we've got we've brought for for nationally, we've
brought in Nick Chong from The Dinner Football. He's an
S and C specialist, so he's really involved in that
condition and stuff and making sure that the players are
are they're peak or they need the rest. But for us,
it's just communication, Adam. To be honest, like, we've got
(03:49):
a good, good coaching staff the club, a lot of
experience in there between the staff members, so we're able
to communicate, communicate effectively with the players and they just yeah,
they're I guess with us, we've just got to kind
of speak up culture. It's really nice to girls to
tell us where they're at and how they're feeling. We're
gonna load them right in things. But yeah, it's a
long season, you know, especially with the changes the last
(04:12):
three four or five years that have come in. And
it's the right idea is to bring more games in,
but it's definitely definitely like you're playing for nine months
of the year, you know, and then the girls will
have a four week or six week breaking and it's
back in the preseason. So yeah, it is is long,
but we manage it well, I think.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
Yeah, yeah, great.
Speaker 1 (04:29):
Through the Central League season, I say, you only conceded
fifteen goals, which was the second equal best record in
that regard. So is that that the style of football
you sit out to play? It does does things change,
you know in terms of what your priority's at now
that you're in the National League.
Speaker 3 (04:47):
Yes, ye have fifteen goals considered either of them were
against bally Nit is fun enough, you know. So it's
one team scored here against this, which is yeah. I
guess it just highlights for our strongest areas are we've
got Marie Green and and Kivin Patterson who are for me,
some of the best defenders in the country, not just
the Central League, and they marshal that line. And we've
(05:07):
brought on a few players from the next to top
that as well. But well, yeah, I guess my micro
type of football is more expansive. Having the back line
is a start, but scoring goals is just important for me.
But yeah, we've we've changed the philosophy a wee bit
going into the nights and league just because of who
we're competing against and every week is a big game.
(05:28):
I mean, you know, I guess we're the underdogs nearly
every game that we go into, which is which is
a good position to be in at times. So yeah,
we've changed it a wee bit. But like having that
having that defense, the players in there, and we've got
lots of players that can rotate in and out, like
we've got lots of yeah, lots of different types and
abilities of players to go in that back line too.
So I think our yeah, the strength is in our
(05:49):
in our setup at the back, and then we kind
of go from there. But it's definitely definitely a work
in progress. Still, it's still still not perfect, but it's
it's nearly there.
Speaker 1 (05:57):
And when you're not playing the things that you used
to from outside the raison. You obviously got Phoenix this weekend,
but a time like West Coast last week, how much
son do you sort of spend trying to find info
on them, looking at videos and things like that, or
do you in sort of kick that to a minimum
and work out what's what's based for yourself?
Speaker 3 (06:13):
A good question. It was a struggle actually for the
West Coast one, just because we didn't have much footage
from them obviously, and we were not in the database
for the Northern League, so it was a way bit
of a struggle. When we got some footage kind of
towards the end of that, that weight going into the game,
but like going forward, we've got plenty before they So
like we're between myself and Sam Marty, the assistant coaching
(06:35):
director of Football Tony, we spent a lot of time analyzing.
It's like one of my big I guess loves of
the football in terms of coaching is going under the
videos analyzing with it. But I'll just pick bits and
pieces from it and I'll I'll not overload the information
to the players too much. So we'll look at what
we need to do in terms of like what the
(06:57):
oppensation strengths are, if there's any weaknesses, and then we'll
try player around that. But we kind of sticking to
what we want to play and then just add wee
bits and pieces in we're going with to try and
match or help break down in that position. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
Yeah, in week one at home.
Speaker 1 (07:12):
Round two only a few minutes up the road at
Fraser Park for the Phoenix, so I guess nice to
ease into the competition as well without any of those
big travel matches at this point.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
Oh yes, yeah, Look, we've been lucky. Actually we're only
away twice in the schedule, so we're a oplaying next
weekend and then the last game of season and that's it.
Everything is local based or at home, so we've drawn
quite well for a first season. So yeah, the game
on Sunday night, like six o'clock off on a Sunday
and I have it's a strange one, but it's close
(07:42):
to home, so it's just around the corner, so that helped.
That definitely helps with with the first season in Nice
League and a lot of players haven't haven't played at
Nice league level before, so that definitely helps with just
getting used to who we're playing against in a different
setup that we're doing and whatnot. So it's it's been
a nice draw. I don't know how the have to say, Yeah, and.
Speaker 1 (08:01):
Given the Phoenix are in the competition for different reasons
than yourselves, I mean, is it hard to know what
to expect from them in a game like this one tomorrow?
Speaker 2 (08:08):
Obviously? I League season for them isn't far away.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
Correct, Yeah, I think that the templayers in the from
the reserves and missing there over at the in Tahiti
for the World Cup, and then Colum Holmes is over
there at the minute and Tory as well, so there's
a few key personnel missing. So I'm I'm assuming I
know this means something, but yeah, I'm assuming that it
will be more on the eight teams that will to
play against which we're familiar with. Yeah, I know them
(08:35):
quite well, so I know whatever team they put out
and somebody, they're going to be great. They're going to
be keeping the ball closer, they're going to be transitional, well,
very aggressive, so it's going to be a great game
and somebody whoever's in So yeah, moving forward to yeah.
Speaker 1 (08:49):
Right, and Ron, you've been at the Batani Women's clubs
that have overseeing things there for a few seasons. Now,
how proud are you of of the work you and
and ow Thos have been able to put into the
club to reach this point, bring the club some success
in terms of reaching National League, one of the top
couple in the Central League to be striving for the
national illness, Is it a special feeling for you?
Speaker 3 (09:11):
It is a special feeling on me, and it's a
special feeling for the whole club and the player people
who have involved, like my assistant coaching Linda has been
whether since the start as well for the last four
or five seasons, you know. And there's there's people behind
the scenes that have been there a long time, like
Julia who's managed the team as well. So for all
of us, it's like making national League was one of
our tick boxes and one of our goals to show
(09:32):
how far we come, you know, and and eventually hopefully
it will be a consistent thing and challenging for the
top Bonnors as well. But I think, yeah, it's very proud.
To be honest, Sometimes I struggle to sit down and
reflect and being be present in the moment, you know,
so I've still getting used to just you know, pot
myself on the back a wee bit, but it's yeah,
(09:54):
it's very special with the people involved in the and
the players involved as well, since they wanted to. It's
just a really nice feeling and it goes to show
I guess Patni's brand and the women's footing at the
minute is we are growing every year and it's it's
really great to see because that's that's the good at
the end of the day. We want to be somewhere
where you know, female athletes can come feel sa if
and developed, and that's I think that's what we're we've
(10:16):
got going. So it's as yeah, it's a it's a
pro pro plug.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
Yeah, great, awesome, Ryan, Well, yeah, congratulations on the success
this year and and and the way that's built over
the last few years. Mate, So all the best for
the remainder of National League, especially this weekend and and
go Well, thanks so much for your time.
Speaker 3 (10:34):
Yeah, I appreciate it. Thanks for reaching out.
