the crump drives into the paint. Jump stop squeers up,
shoots in store well into the right side. Now Booker
to shoot a three and she knocks it down. Now
out to the right side, three pointer. Good by Jordan Lee.
Her first bucket Las Rodriguez to the right side with
it working against the Laker, just took the ball right
out of her hands again. Here come to loghorns into

it on air, we'll also talk all things guess what
Olympics because gold is the favorite.

Speaker 3 (03:29):
Color of a lot of people.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
I want to get into this because Texas women's basketball
has had their ups and downs throughout the season, and
when I say ups, I mean there's been a lot
of them.

Speaker 3 (03:41):
The only down was they had.

Speaker 1 (03:42):
A tough go against a couple of teams. But they
find a way to get it done. And that's exactly
what they were able to do yesterday going up to
Fayeville to make up a game that was a scheduled
for January the twenty fifth, but they had to restap
because of ice, and what they did was go up

(04:03):
and give a dominant performance. Texas now twenty five and
three on the year, ten and three in conference play.
Arkansas falls to oh to thirteen in conference play in
eleven and seventeen on the year. Couldn't happen to a
better team exactly exactly. Didn't want to get stuck there
for sure. But the one thing that I looked at

(04:25):
going into this game, Marcus and I talked about this
a little bit earlier. We understood that Texas was going
to go and win this game. There was no doubt
in our mind about it. But it was about the
performance and how were they going to be able to
get it done well. Madison Booker did Madison Booker type things.
Jordan Lee hit a couple three pointers, so it was

(04:46):
good to see that happening. Alijah Crump came off the
bench to give you sixteen points.

Speaker 3 (04:52):
Kyla Oldaker, you heard it right there.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
Kathy Harshton and Craig Way kind of chuckling at the
fact that she got another double double and the ability
of Ashton Judd. This is somebody that I have been
wanting to see get more involved into the team and
into the game. In her twelve minutes she finished with
thirteen points, so she was definitely effective.

Speaker 3 (05:17):
It was definitely effective.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
Rory Harmon eight points and seven assists, zero turnovers, and
she had two steals.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
But it was more than that.

Speaker 1 (05:26):
It was an opportunity for those young ladies to go
out there and kind of calm the waters. As I said,
they're twenty five and three and ten and three in
conference play in the SEC. They won all the games
outside of the SEC beat some ranked teams along the way,
played a gauntlet of a schedule, but they went out

(05:47):
and handled their business. Mark and coach Vic Shaeffer after
the game talked about the performance of his team first five.

Speaker 5 (05:54):
I just want to commend Arkansas and coach. I just
have watched him. You know, we were ready to play
them a month ago, and who they are today and
where they were a month ago is way different. I
just you know, we told our kids they don't play
to the clock, they don't play to the score. They
just keep playing. They just keep coming at you. And
I thought they did that tonight. I mean they went

(06:16):
to the free throw line thirty two times, very aggressive.
We weren't very aggressive, only went nine times.

Speaker 3 (06:23):
And you know, you have.

Speaker 5 (06:25):
To give them, those kids a lot of credit. I
think she's doing a great job with them. And again
that's a sign of good kids and good coaching. And
I think that's that's my impression of Arkansas and coach
and the job that they're doing, and a lot of
respect for that.

Speaker 3 (06:41):
It's hard to get kids to continue.

Speaker 5 (06:44):
To play hard and fight and grind sometimes, but man,
those kids just keep doing it, and.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
They're doing it better a month later.

Speaker 5 (06:50):
You know, after the fact, I had to throw out
all the film that I'd looked at and start. Really
even though I would have done it anyway, and watched
the more recent film.

Speaker 3 (06:59):
It was just night and day. So I'm proud of
my team.

Speaker 5 (07:03):
You know this, this group offensively was really good tonight.

Speaker 3 (07:06):
We made some shots. I told them at halftime.

Speaker 5 (07:09):
Man, it's a whole lot more fun to coach and
a whole lot easier coach when you make some shots.
And I thought we made shots first half and did
some really good things.

Speaker 3 (07:19):
Booker.

Speaker 5 (07:19):
Booker's been making threes in practice. She's been making them
in in uh, in her workouts with shooting, and you know,
I told her. I think I told her when she
was out there in pregame. I'm like, baby, you've been
making those. You need to make those tonight. You need
to take them. Don't even think twice about it. And
of course Aliah is such a great shooter. Rory makes
two tonight, it always helps. And then Kyla has a

(07:42):
double double inside, and we knew we had an advantage
in there. We just had to try to take advantage
of it. But I thought at times we played really hard,
and other than the filing, which I've got to address,
you know, I thought I thought our kids really really
played hard, and I'm really proud of them. We've vet
a gauntlet, y'all. We have really had a tough, tough

(08:05):
gauntlet of top twenty five games, top ten games, top
five games, and it has really been a challenge with
this group, and I'm really proud of them. We've had
great workouts since our last week and had obviously a tough,
knockdown drag out on Sunday with Tennessee. Seems like we

(08:26):
get everybody's best shot. And you know again, I thought
Arkansas played really good tonight as well.

Speaker 3 (08:32):
So proud of my group, Proud of my team.

Speaker 5 (08:35):
They just continue to work and we got plenty to
work on. But this one thing about this group, they're
going to continue to bring it in practice and try
to get better.

Speaker 3 (08:46):
I'm with him. The only thing that I that I.

Speaker 2 (08:49):
Have to disagree with, coach is that they played great
because they played against you. They did not play great.
They hustled, but they did not play great. They got
a whooping they I mean, I'm talking.

Speaker 3 (09:05):
About the woodshed. They don't have.

Speaker 2 (09:07):
Wood shares no more. These kids today y'all looking at
y'all and live in there. And we lived in because we.

Speaker 3 (09:13):
Got took out to the wood shit like they got.

Speaker 2 (09:16):
Hey, they broke the belt out hard. They did the
Michael Irvin for real. Yeah, and it was good to
see Texas shoot them as many threes as they did.

Speaker 1 (09:25):
Well, the problem is they were ten of twenty eight.
You know what, I'll take thirty six percent.

Speaker 2 (09:31):
You know, like this is not you know, you you
play baseball, you know the at loll averages. Yeah, like
if you if you forty percent baseball, you pretty good.

Speaker 3 (09:41):
Well you look at it.

Speaker 1 (09:41):
The only reason why it was so bad is because
of Leah went one of seven, one of seven.

Speaker 3 (09:45):
Yeah, if she did, if she would.

Speaker 1 (09:47):
Have you know, made a couple of those, the percentage
obviously Sleep would have went.

Speaker 3 (09:51):
Up in the forty. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (09:52):
Well, the other part of it is Madison Booker taking them,
you know, being able to shoot the three. Oh she
was three or five, right, Yeah, and she was asked
about that in the post game with the SEC Network crew.

Speaker 6 (10:05):
A little bit ragged, but all of a sudden, you
kind of took over in the second with your mid
range game. Take me back to that quarter and what
you did to give your team some separation.

Speaker 7 (10:13):
I kind of like you remember the game kind of
a little bit, but no, I just I think with
this game is like going to the game, coach kind
of challenges to do a better job of just like
run their offense, just doing the little things of offense too,
and just kind of scoring. I think sometimes, you know,
these pastball games can be kind of stagnant, So we
were trying to, you know, move around, like just shut
the ball, play as a team, players one and have

(10:35):
fun out there.

Speaker 8 (10:36):
Or you're so well known for the mid range magic
that you have, and they pack it in that zone there,
and you know, I think you should shoot more threes.
I think you shoot more three And you got there
and you're knocking down right side and left side beautiful shots.

Speaker 3 (10:53):
Talk about that, and.

Speaker 8 (10:54):
You didn't hesitate at all talk about your three point shooting.

Speaker 7 (10:57):
I mean it's always been there, you know. I think
I just kind of early on the season I turned
something down. So you know, once I started shooting him again,
they were off. But you know, coaching, you put like
a lot of confidence in me to do somebody can
tend the ball.

Speaker 3 (11:12):
So I listen to him. I mean, he's my coach.
He made my minutes, so I just did that. What's
your luck? Flay for coaching, It's great.

Speaker 7 (11:20):
His passion, just his love for the game is. You
can definitely feel it, you know, coaching and practice, you
can just feel like he wants to win and.

Speaker 3 (11:27):
It kind of just.

Speaker 7 (11:30):
We show it too sometimes, but I think sometimes he
shows it more and which it's not a.

Speaker 8 (11:33):
Good Well, it's a very talented Texas team. You've got
a great record. And how do you feel getting here?
Were getting into late February already you blink your eyes,
you'll be going to Greenbook for the SEC tournament. What
do you think about your team right now?

Speaker 7 (11:47):
I mean, for what top five in the country right now.
That's not where we want to be at. That's not
our goal. We have bigger goals this season. But you know,
we got to just keep getting better. You know, it's
still things we need to work on, even in February
right now that you think that we would be perfect
right now, but we're not. But it's just continue to
be hungry. You get better every day, one percent better

(12:09):
of it. Don't look too far ahead, don't look too
far back, you know, the pass of the past, and
kind of just keep getting better at what we already
are good at.

Speaker 3 (12:17):
Our strength. Sorry, this season, she sounds like a coach.

Speaker 8 (12:19):
A great answer, that's a great answer, right there.

Speaker 6 (12:22):
BET's the congratulations on the winning. Best wishes to you down.

Speaker 3 (12:24):
The shad, Thank you so much. Yeah, that's what it's
all about. That's what it's all about.

Speaker 1 (12:30):
Exciting time for this Texas baseball team, on baseball basketball team,
women's basketball team as they continue to grow and get
closer and closer to that March Madness gauntlet that they've
been playing in. Going through this. Coming up next, we're
gonna talk Gauntlet. I'm confused about what's going on at

(12:50):
Kansas playing time possible number one pick, but one ESPN
analyst says it's a cautionary tale.

Speaker 3 (12:59):
I'll explain right here on the.

Speaker 1 (13:00):
Morning Kickoff on Sports Radio and thirteen hundred The Zone
and always free on the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 3 (13:07):
Welcome back to.

Speaker 1 (13:07):
The Morning Kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone, Feel Good Friday edition of the Morning Kickoff.
Mike Harball hars We're old strongest man, Dean Mark Henry,
that's right, and of course Marcus behind the boards. Coming
up in the next segment, We've got a special story
that I wanted to share about a couple family members
that are definitely part of Black History Month. I wanted

(13:33):
to get into this because this has been bothering me
the entire season. If you haven't been paying attention to
the story out of Kansas. Obviously, Bill self is Bill Self.
He's done an unbelievable job as the head coach of
the Kansas Jayhawks. Kansas Jayhawks are always in the conversation

(13:54):
for playing for a national championship, being a part of
the landscape of college basketball, and really getting after it. Well,
he's got an interesting situation that is happening in Lawrence, Kansas.
There's a player named Darren Peterson, and we talked a

(14:14):
little bit about this yesterday, and we got a chance
to hear from Bill's self yesterday. But one of the
things that is definitely bothering me about this whole situation
is the unknown part of it. And you, obviously, if
you inside the Jayhawk walls, there's probably conversations that are

(14:38):
being had, there's probably situations that have been addressed, and
they even talked about the fact that, hey, we know
that sometimes he's not going to be there. The best
thing about us is we can move on. We continue
to play without him. But he's the possible number one
overall draft pick and when you start to look at

(14:58):
your dynamic as a basketball team, not just college but
in the NBA, you try to find ways to get
it done well. As I spoke about the situation about
the team in the locker room, there might be some
distress in that locker room, and one of their players,
el Marco Jackson, talked about a little bit of it,

(15:22):
and tell me if you feel any ankst in his voice.

Speaker 9 (15:26):
His first half player is like, he does that with
such ease, and we've been seeing it since summertime. So
as crazy it is for you guys to see it,
like for us, it's kind of normal, but it's really
not normal. But you know, I'm not going to talk
about that. You know, you have a really good first half,
so I don't know, I'm not going to talk about.

Speaker 1 (15:48):
Yeah, that's frustration without so much ease. And then all
of a sudden, I'm not gonna talk about the second
half because he didn't play.

Speaker 3 (15:57):
Hey, eighteen years it down.

Speaker 2 (15:59):
He shifted down when he down shifted all the way
to the bench.

Speaker 3 (16:04):
Yeah, taped.

Speaker 1 (16:05):
The coach made a three, taped self and was like
take me out, Like he made a three right in
front of their self. It's almost like again, we keep
going back to this movie. It's almost like Blue Chips.
It's like this dude has so much ability that we

(16:25):
often look at him a little bit.

Speaker 3 (16:27):
Different because he can be that type of guy.

Speaker 1 (16:32):
I heard people talk about generational talent when it comes
to him.

Speaker 2 (16:37):
Anthony Edwards is a lot of people compared him to
Dwayne Wade and Anthony Edwards.

Speaker 3 (16:42):
Like a combination of the two.

Speaker 2 (16:44):
Either way, he good right, but and I tried to
look at it from his side, heards, I tried, unbelievable talent.
What if he goes up, somebody goes under and breaks
his leg. I thought of every negative scenario that you
can think of why he can say, you know what, man,

(17:07):
I'm really trying to protect myself. But none of it
works because every time I think, I think, you go
to the school to play for a school, you go
to play for a coach, but ultimately you end up
playing for the people that you're on the court with.

Speaker 3 (17:27):
They're protecting you. If somebody foul.

Speaker 2 (17:30):
You too hard, one of these guys that are expendable,
I hate to say it, then you there for files,
go out there and smack him up. The old school goon,
the goons, go do protect your teammate. You run, you sweat,
you bond, and then you said, say, you know what, guys,

(17:57):
I'm gonna sit it out.

Speaker 3 (17:58):
Man, I got my twenty. I'm good.

Speaker 2 (18:00):
Yeah, I'm gonna sit this second half out.

Speaker 3 (18:03):
You know I'm gonna get drafted.

Speaker 2 (18:06):
And you make it about you and you give up
on your team. Bro, we need you. We've been practicing.
All the players roll around you. Now you eliminate yourself
from that. Now we got guys that have me had reps.
He's just not thinking clearly and the people around him

(18:30):
are horrible too for allowing that. And Marcus made a
point during the break. You're a GM and you're gonna
draft this guy in your top five, possibly number one
or number two. What's gonna happen in the NBA when
it gets thick?

Speaker 3 (18:51):
Is he gonna quit then?

Speaker 1 (18:52):
Too? Well, it's interesting that you bring that up because
Jason Williams had take yesterday. I believe it was on
First Take or Get Up, one of the talk shows
on the Four Letter Network, but he spoke about the
caution of picking a.

Speaker 3 (19:09):
Guy like this.

Speaker 10 (19:11):
If I were a general manager, I would be extremely
concerned about Darren Peterson. I don't question his talent at all.
His talent is the number one pick in the draft,
but I would take aj to Bonca because I'm not
sure about the availability of Darren Peterson. Darren Peterson has
played twelve of twenty four games this year in college basketball,
and it's been everything from an injury, a hamstring injury,

(19:32):
cramping with the thor gun on the sideline every single possession,
having the flu, not playing through the flu, and also
just checking himself out of second half of games. I've
done college game Day where all a sudden, he got
eighteen the first half. You're like, damn, this kid is
so elite, and all of a sudden, the second half
is he playing?

Speaker 3 (19:47):
What happened?

Speaker 10 (19:48):
Nobody knows, Nobody wants.

Speaker 3 (19:50):
To talk about it.

Speaker 10 (19:51):
His talent is unquestionable, it's elite, But don't feel like
he really wants to be there. It doesn't feel and
maybe this is a byproduct KP. When kids get paid
nil and they get money up front, right, if that's
the way it goes, It's like, well, if I don't
want to be here, I get my money up front,
then I can check out when I want to check out.

Speaker 3 (20:10):
That's what this feels like.

Speaker 10 (20:11):
I don't know if it is that, but damn sure
on paper it looks like that.

Speaker 11 (20:15):
But I'm gonna tell you this, billself better than me,
because I would have been got on this ass like
back pockets. We would have been moving some furniture. There's
no way in hell I go and recruit you. I
pay you the dollars that I'm paying you, and you
come and you act the way that you're acting, meaning
like not showing up, thinking that we're doing things on
your terms.

Speaker 3 (20:36):
Again, this is not I don't look at this.

Speaker 11 (20:38):
As college basketball anymore. Once you start getting paid, this
is your job. And so I'm starting to think, you know,
I want to get to the root of the problem.
Who is in this corner telling him what he needs
to hear? Who is representing him right? Who's telling him
to do these things? Because I can't blame an eighteen

(20:59):
night ten year old kid, a young man, should I say,
for acting this way?

Speaker 3 (21:04):
Right?

Speaker 11 (21:05):
What he did last night was disturbment. You could see
it all on Bill self face. I mean, you know
what I'm saying.

Speaker 3 (21:10):
It was. It was frustration all over it.

Speaker 11 (21:13):
And the last part, I'm a hard one, is it's
guys like this that don't fulfill their obligations and ruin
it for everybody else. We wasn't having this conversation last
year about Cooper Flag.

Speaker 3 (21:26):
No, we were not.

Speaker 11 (21:27):
Cooper Flag was showing up and showing out every single time,
and he probably got paid twenty plus million dollars.

Speaker 3 (21:33):
A dude, to your point, came half of it. It came
from you now and then come to me. But I
know the collective which it didn't come from. But that's
the thing about it, man, that's not familiar.

Speaker 1 (21:44):
They understand the importance of it all. Jason Williams was
the number one overall pick talent, you're talented. He played,
Cooper Flag the number one overall pick playing. They talk
about aj the pat stuff from from by U Baller.

(22:06):
He's playing in every game. They're not taking.

Speaker 3 (22:08):
Him out every minute.

Speaker 1 (22:09):
So the understanding of who this person is is the park.

Speaker 3 (22:15):
Is around him. Yo, I don't want nothing to do
with them. It's a little bit.

Speaker 2 (22:19):
I'm not I'm not risking my job as a GM
on him.

Speaker 3 (22:23):
Yeah, I'm not gonna do it. But you're also risking
it by not taking it. No, No, like I told you.

Speaker 2 (22:28):
This is the deepest Draft since Kevin Garnett's group came out.

Speaker 1 (22:34):
Still still he's a generational talent. Coming up next, I
want to talk about my generation and my family's talent
right here on the morning Kickoff on Sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred, The Zone and always free on the iHeart
Radio app. You know, Black History Month is a month
that a lot of people finally getst their their due.

(22:58):
There's a lot of folks that have done some amazing
things in their career, probably a lot of people that
were the first to be able to do something. I
work with someone who is part of Black history. I
work with the world's strongest man WWE Hall of Famer
that has done some amazing things in his life. I too,

(23:19):
have done some things that I don't ever really get it.
I don't really talk about it near as much of
some of the things that I have been privy to
and some of the things that I've.

Speaker 3 (23:28):
Done throughout my career.

Speaker 1 (23:31):
But one of the things that has been very special
to me, there's two of them. One of them, my uncle,
Sheriff Greg Hamilton, was the first African American, first black
sheriff in the city of Austin Ford, Travis County. He
was the first one around this area. Since then, there's

(23:51):
been some police chiefs and there has been other.

Speaker 3 (23:57):
Sheriffs around here.

Speaker 1 (24:00):
One of the biggest stories that I don't really talk
about near as much as I probably should, and that's
my fault, is my great grandfather. He was a very
very special man to a lot of people. And KX
or not KX k ce N out of Waco actually

(24:23):
did a story on him just a few days ago.

Speaker 12 (24:27):
All righty, so this morning for Black History Month, we
are firing up the grill on a story that's pure
Kaleen history and a barbecue legacy that helped change the city.
Meet Maurice Hamilton, Colleen's first black business man. On September second,
nineteen fifty one, he opened Maurice's Real Pit Barbecue along

(24:47):
US Business one ninety. He will operate the restaurant for
much of his life, serving up real Pit barbecue and
making history while doing it. But Maurice's impact went far
beyond his storefront. He also was assault after caterer. When
Colleen banker and Chamber of Commerce leader Roy J. Smith
hosted military parties at his Nolan Circle home, Maurice Hamilton

(25:10):
provided the barbecue, feeding soldiers and community leaders during a
critical period of growth tie to fort Hood. So in
the nineteen forties and fifties, Colleen's black population grew as
fort Hood expanded, bringing in black soldiers and their families,
which slowly shifted the city's racial makeup and opening the

(25:31):
door for black entrepreneurship. So when we talk about Colleen's
transformation into that diverse city it is today, Maurice's Real
Pit Barbecue isn't just a restaurant. It's a symbol of
progress and black history served hot.

Speaker 1 (25:45):
And I can't thank them enough for highlighting what my grandfather,
great grandfather, excuse me, was able to achieve and what
he was able to bring to the city. Now, the
truth of the matter is my uncle who became the
sheriff of Travis County, becoming the first that was his grandfather,

(26:06):
and so the lessons that were being told every single
day was an opportunity for us to become better men,
become better people, and of course figure out our way
in the struggle of being able to start your own business.
When the story came out, I posted it on my
social media and there were so many people that had

(26:29):
stories about what that restaurant meant to them and their families. Black,
white did not matter. They were all drawn to my
great grandfather's barbecue and what he was able to do.
So I wanted to make sure that I shared some
light on that to be able to, you know, talk

(26:52):
about what my family has been able to achieve. When
my uncle became the sheriff, it was a tough time
for our entire family because he was the first. And
you know, when you become the first, not everybody agrees
with your thought process.

Speaker 3 (27:07):
Along the way, but we all made it through it.

Speaker 1 (27:10):
He is honored all the time by so many people,
and that is why I wanted to make sure that
I shed light on my great grandfather and of course
my uncle, who have done great things in this world.

Speaker 3 (27:24):
Man, that's awesome.

Speaker 2 (27:26):
Black history is American history, absolutely, and it's every day,
you know, all year long. We all need to love
each other and respect each other, you know, and the
social climate and political climate, Uh, sometimes we tend to
forget that. And I'm not My friends are not gonna

(27:47):
side with their status quo and with what's going on
in the world. They they love me for me right,
and and I love them, and that's just that's just
what the world needs to have more of, and we
need to have more love respect for each other. Yeah,
and like I said, I appreciate the fact that people
have reached out to me because they saw the article

(28:09):
number one, They saw the story on the news, but
then they were.

Speaker 3 (28:13):
Like, I did not realize. I did not realize.

Speaker 1 (28:16):
So funny story about me growing up in Colleen. I
had two last names. And obviously you see Hamilton was
the last name. That's my father's last name, but on
my birth certificate it had my mom's name on there.

(28:37):
And when I would go to school, obviously my birth
certificate you had to go by Harde, but when I
would sign up for sports, I would go by Hamilton.

Speaker 3 (28:49):
So for.

Speaker 1 (28:52):
Seven years I had I was Mike harg in school,
but I was Michael Hamilton in sports. And then it
came time for sports where you get picked and you
got to sign up. Well, some people knew me from
school and their parents knew me from school, they didn't
know me from sports. So there was a where you

(29:13):
get to pick your players. They would pick Mike harj
and not Mike Hamilton. Somebody else would pick Mike Hamilton,
and so I finally had to go to court to
go by Michael Harje all the time. I was scared
for my life at that time as a young kid.
I think I was ten nine years old, and every

(29:34):
time I would go somewhere, they were like, your last
name is Harje, you will go by Hard And I
was like, when I signed up for sports, it's Michael Hamilton.
I needed my parents, my dad, my family. They're like, no,
you are going with Harje.

Speaker 3 (29:47):
So your government papers say Hard, what's your birth certificate?
Saying what does your social security say?

Speaker 13 (29:54):
It sounds like you had an alter ego, like a
superhero when when I put these gloves exactly Mike Hamilton.

Speaker 1 (30:02):
Well, think about this, it would have been a little
bit different to call me Harball Hamilton. It would have
been a totally different thing. I don't know if I
were to roll with Harball Hamilton, but I wanted to
give a shout out to my great grandfather and my
uncle Greg. When we come back, we got to talk
about some more legacy that was made, because history was

(30:24):
made yesterday in the Olympics, and we'll talk about it
right here on the morning kickoff on Sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred, The Zone and always free on the iHeartRadio app.
Welcome back to the morning kickoff right here on Sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Want to make sure
that you tuned in at eight seventeen when we get

(30:45):
a chance to talk to Ann Parker Coleman of Caveview,
she breaks it down. We have a weekly segment on
caveew that lets us talk a little bit about baseball.

Speaker 3 (30:58):
We'll talk more about.

Speaker 1 (30:59):
That a little bit later, but right now I wanted
you to hear how yesterday the gold medal came to
the US through.

Speaker 8 (31:09):
Albert passpor Color with the facts, then thinks fool.

Speaker 10 (31:12):
Cut for the next stuff, Color the overcolor Hero, the
United States.

Speaker 3 (31:21):
Friends Gold, the god USA.

Speaker 1 (31:35):
USA wins gold in the in the hockey and it
was one of the most dominant performances throughout the hockey
season four uh for through the Olympics for the US.
And it's interesting to me, Mark, because they played seven
games in Milan.

Speaker 3 (31:54):
They had they went seven to.

Speaker 1 (31:55):
Oh thirty three goals for them, two goals giving up
point differential obviously of plus thirty one. And they had
two wins, two wins against the people that supposedly made
up hockey, the Canadians, who they went out there and beat.

Speaker 3 (32:15):
Them in epic fashion.

Speaker 1 (32:18):
How cool was that They've actually did not allow a
goal for three hundred and fifty two minutes in this.

Speaker 3 (32:26):
Year's that's domination.

Speaker 2 (32:28):
Yes, like this may be the most dominant that the
Americans have ever been in hockey. Yeah, I mean, I
can't remember hearing this level of excellence. It's just you know,
it hadn't happened.

Speaker 1 (32:50):
Well, we have twenty seven gold medals, I mean twenty
seven medals total, nine gold, twelve silver, six bronze, Norway
sixteen goal, eight silver and ten.

Speaker 3 (33:05):
Bronze.

Speaker 1 (33:06):
So they have thirty four medals we have twenty seven,
followed by Italy who has twenty six.

Speaker 3 (33:14):
They spend a lot of time in the cold. Yeah,
a lot of their sports. They probably invented a lot
of them sports. Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (33:24):
So as you sit here and you look at this,
obviously there's still a lot that is going on when
you start to look at how the Olympics continue to row,
as you know you can. All you got to do
is get over to that iHeartRadio app. Put in the
keyword Olympics and you can always hear it for free.

Speaker 3 (33:44):
On that iHeart Radio app.

Speaker 1 (33:47):
So make sure that you have that locked in if
you want to continue to follow it.

Speaker 3 (33:51):
And I wish they had that when I was competing.

Speaker 2 (33:53):
It would have made it a lot easier for people
to access the information and hear the results before.

Speaker 3 (34:02):
Man and it's free, then it's free.

Speaker 1 (34:04):
So for you, I mean, what was your events more
Summer Games? Yeah, because we were in August. You were
August through? What it was like for a month though?

Speaker 3 (34:16):
Right?

Speaker 2 (34:16):
Well, I mean we were there for two weeks and
the uh weightlifting portion was a week long because of
the weight classes one day, one class a day being
the super everyweight I was last, so that whole week
I spent still training and just waiting my turn.

Speaker 3 (34:39):
And that's what everybody did.

Speaker 1 (34:41):
Could you have waited to go over there or was
it a must that you needed to be there with
the team.

Speaker 2 (34:46):
The entire team went to the village together, so we
would fly over like we did in Barcelona. The same
thing with Atlanta. You know you're there for you know,
a week and a weekend a day.

Speaker 1 (34:59):
Okay, Yeah, I remember when we went to Atlanta for
SEC media days. You were talking a little bit about, yeah.

Speaker 2 (35:07):
Showing Georgia Georgia Tech's existing campus, you know, owned.

Speaker 3 (35:17):
Was an Olympic village, the Olympic Village. Those were the
dorms that we stayed in on Georgia Tech campus. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (35:24):
They were brand new, right, They had just built that
whole piece on Highway seventy five.

Speaker 1 (35:30):
Didn't they build that specifically for you guys?

Speaker 2 (35:34):
Or then they left it for Georgia Tech University because
they backed up to their existing campus.

Speaker 3 (35:40):
What were they use what do they use it for now?
It's still it's Georgia Tech campus.

Speaker 1 (35:45):
Oh okay, so so it's regular dorms for other people. Yeah, yeah, okay,
you call it still the Olympic Village dorms, Yeah, I bet.

Speaker 2 (35:55):
Because that was a wild They named it after some
dignitarians city.

Speaker 3 (36:01):
The name of the Mark Henry uh Man.

Speaker 2 (36:03):
They ain't thought about me since I left.

Speaker 7 (36:07):
The John.

Speaker 3 (36:09):
The John R. C. Duncan somebody billionaire?

Speaker 1 (36:13):
Yeah, yeah, from from Georgia Tech that was able to
go there.

Speaker 3 (36:18):
They may have.

Speaker 2 (36:18):
Named one of those wings over there, like the Roman Reigns.

Speaker 1 (36:22):
You know he played football at Georgia Tech. That's right,
that's right. But he wasn't Roman Rains though, right, No,
he was Joe on the side.

Speaker 3 (36:30):
Wait what Annoyedy Joe Annoyte okay, also.

Speaker 2 (36:36):
Joe owner Side, I was a guy that I competed against.
And uh, he and the Rock were both the two
legacy kids in Hawaii that were going to assume the
role of hogh chief and he was uh. The Wayne
was the my Via family and Joe owner Side was
a world champion powerlifter and he was also you know,

(37:00):
one of the legacy kids that had the key to
the throne.

Speaker 1 (37:04):
So who ended up taking the throw? Dwayne also he
was the one that he became a chief. Is that
why he's got all those tattoos the way that a
man don't don't big him up too much. I said tattoos.
I didn't say nothing about nothing else.

Speaker 2 (37:20):
The family Chris and brands and those tattoos. Dwayne actually
did the tapping because they do it a special way,
and he did the I think the rest of the
armsleeves stuff was ink.

Speaker 3 (37:36):
But the stuff from.

Speaker 2 (37:37):
The waist down, we're all tapped and it's dangerous, like
you can die from it, but you have to go through.

Speaker 3 (37:44):
But you have to go through it. You're gonna be
the king. You gotta do it. Man, I don't know
if I want to be king. He can't go to
Wakanda smart.

Speaker 2 (37:57):
In order for you to be keen, you're gonna have
to take this shot. If I'm not drugged, you mean,
with nothing.

Speaker 1 (38:05):
My favorite thing that you ever said is like you
have to be like mister T and the.

Speaker 2 (38:09):
A give me my milk, cause I'm not thinking, excuse.

Speaker 3 (38:13):
Me with no needle.

Speaker 1 (38:16):
I just want to be around one No, I I
want to be around one time with you and a needle.

Speaker 3 (38:24):
Oh my gosh, that's hilarious. When we come back, we're
gonna talk Spurs.

Speaker 1 (38:28):
They took over the Moody Center and Winby has talked
about his team and they.

Speaker 3 (38:34):
Are responding that is true.

Speaker 1 (38:37):
Right here on the Morning Kickoff on sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred to zone and always free on the iHeart
Radio app. Welcome back to the Morning Kickoff right here
on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred to zone and always
free on the iHeart Radio App. Mike Harballhart's World's Strongest Man,
WWE Hall of Famer and former Olympian Mark Henry, and

(38:59):
of course we've got our guy Marcus behind the boards.
I wanted to get into this conversation because it is
it is taken over and when I say taken over.
That means that the San Antonio Spurs have taken over
the Moody Center and have taken over Austin. Last night
they get the victory over the Suns, and not only

(39:19):
was it a victory, it was one of those woodshed
as you like to say, Mark, when you get out
there and you know what it's all about. One twenty
one to ninety four win, Bin Yama doing wimby things,
and that's seven straight wins for the San Antonio Spurs.
But when you think about the San Antonio Spurs and

(39:40):
what they have been able to do in a short
period of time for the last two seasons, all they
have been able to do was get better and better
and better, and that is what they continue to grow from.
Mitch was his name. Johnson is the head coach. He's
I didn't realize this. He was the former ast the
Spurs head coach, won a championship here and now he

(40:04):
is leading this team. But one of the players that
continues to elevate his game and finds a way to
get it done is the fun Castle. It's the fun
Castle and he and Champagne, these are two guys that
have gone through a lot with each other, and along
the way they have gotten better and better. And when

(40:27):
Castle and Champagne talked about the Spurs' growth.

Speaker 14 (40:32):
I mean, I mean, like I said earlier, piably just
because of the trajectory of you know where our season
is going and you know where we could end up.
You know, I mean, obviously we see where we're at
in the standings, and let me see what are the
teams that we have left in our schedule, so we
know it doesn't get any any easier from here.

Speaker 15 (40:48):
We have like an eight game stretch where we told
ourselves we want to go, you know, we end up
going seven to one. I think we did lost to Charlotte,
and I think from that loss moving forward, we had
to really using ourselves. You don't want to are we
putting our engine in the right places? Are we doing
the right things to you know, win, not for you
know self alcol accolades points like stats or whatever whatever

(41:11):
it may be. Having those conversations to where we can't uh,
you know, bs against you know, teams that are lower
standings or you know we don't think are as good.

Speaker 14 (41:20):
I mean, that's when we get in trouble. So just
trying to fix that problem before it gets too bad. Personally,
I keep it about with you. I've never really been
in a winning like a winning team like even in college.
My team wasn't the best team in college. We were
just solid.

Speaker 3 (41:34):
But I do.

Speaker 15 (41:35):
I think it's something that we need to to win
games and to ultimately get where we want to get to.
If we don't, if we can't you know, speak to
each other and have honest conversations. And my teammates can't
look at me and curse me out.

Speaker 3 (41:44):
And be like, well, what are you doing.

Speaker 15 (41:47):
We have a problem, we'll have a problem. So I
think everybody's kind of letting our ego go. There's no
egos and here it's just you know, don't listen to
what I'm don't listen to how I'm.

Speaker 3 (41:55):
Telling you, just to what I'm telling you.

Speaker 15 (41:57):
It's kind of what we've been going by and what
we've been doing.

Speaker 3 (41:59):
So you know, more of that. Think about this, Mark.

Speaker 1 (42:05):
This is a team that has found a way, that
has found a way to stay together, play together, and
enjoy being with each other to the point that they're
closing the gap on Oka See. They've already shown that
they can beat Okay See multiple times in Okay. See

(42:28):
defending champion also have one of the best records in
the NBA right now.

Speaker 3 (42:34):
But the Spurs are right there with them.

Speaker 2 (42:37):
And not only are they right there with them, but
they had the head I think there were three and one. Yeah,
that's what I'm saying. They they know that they can
eat them. They're not worried about them. You know what
I was telling you this during the break. I hadn't
heard this. That that sound that Marc has just played
with Castle. Man, it hurts a little bit, and I

(43:03):
got some stuck in my throat to take.

Speaker 3 (43:07):
I was wrong.

Speaker 2 (43:10):
Because I was like, man, this would be a good
time to trade Castle and some of the other expendable
guys on that bench to Milwaukee for Giannis. After watching
him play yesterday and after watching him play on Friday.

Speaker 3 (43:29):
Like Castle is different, Like I man, that dude.

Speaker 2 (43:34):
I think he got like a hover button like on
the video game or something, because he jumps.

Speaker 3 (43:40):
And he's it's.

Speaker 2 (43:42):
Like he floats in there and other people are coming down,
and then he'll shoot like he gets people off balance
and he can jump off of either leg. And it's
a gift. It's not just a good basketball player. It's
like it's a skill. So he's got something that I

(44:02):
didn't see. And you know, I think that every team
in the NBA should be shaken a little bit because
if I play you, if that.

Speaker 3 (44:13):
Team plays you.

Speaker 2 (44:16):
Seven games in a row, you're not gonna beat them.
I don't think that there's a team right now in
the NBA, including Oklahoma City, that can play them seven
times in a in a in a week and beat them.

Speaker 3 (44:32):
I don't think there's not one team.

Speaker 2 (44:34):
So that's me saying, basically, I think they'll win the championship.

Speaker 3 (44:38):
Yeah, that's what it sounded like you were saying.

Speaker 2 (44:40):
I'm you, you pouring the team out and then let
me let me let me rephrase it if I'm wrong.
But I don't think that there's a team playing right
now because Chet Hungern is the is the deciding factor
in the Oklahoma City games. And what the reason that
the Spurs are beating them three to one is because

(45:04):
Wemby nullifies him. All of their bigs have no chance
against Winby. He's that dominant a player. The Guard play
at Oklahoma City with Shae Gilders, Alexander.

Speaker 3 (45:20):
Shae Shae Has, Shae Has.

Speaker 2 (45:27):
He doesn't have enough help at point guard to go
against the four headed monster of guards that are at
the Spurs. Eventually he's gonna get tired and go to
the bench, and then Castle is gonna come on, our
Champagnee is gonna come on.

Speaker 3 (45:46):
Fox is gonna be there.

Speaker 2 (45:47):
They got they got so much depth on that sel
like and and they have too so much depth at
guard that they nullify the star player, so like, you
can't beat them. I just I just think in a
series with the coaching that they have who the coach
was a disciple of coach Papa too. Yeah, so it's

(46:12):
not like he's not a defensive oriented coach. You know,
if he needs to turn the defense up, he can.
It's just I look at the Spurs as being a
championship team.

Speaker 13 (46:23):
How deep do you think the Spurs would be willing
to go to the bench where they go eight deep
in the playoffs? Sevent deep because that's usually you shrink
your rotation in the playoffs. How deep are you willing
to go?

Speaker 1 (46:37):
There's no need for them to shorten it because every
single player on that squad can ball out.

Speaker 3 (46:43):
They have the depth.

Speaker 1 (46:45):
So my question to you Mark, it's because you talked
about this when Mark was out the other day. You
looked at this team and you what was what came
to your mind? What'd you tell me?

Speaker 13 (46:55):
What I saw is I saw no like I saw
them not being that team that is scared in the playoffs.
I see it as a team that is angry so
in the playoffs trying to prove it.

Speaker 2 (47:07):
Yeah.

Speaker 13 (47:08):
Usually when you have a young team, they get to
the playoffs, no playoffs experience, you can beat them with
the experienced team. Now, they're always those young teams that
are scared because they don't know what they're doing. And
the combination with the Spurs is they're angry team that
can do it and then they don't have the fear
of not knowing what they're doing.

Speaker 2 (47:29):
Yeah, yeah, I see exactly the same way. Yeah, this
is a team that and they can go nine too hard.
They can go eight or nine deep.

Speaker 13 (47:38):
I can see them being able to go nine and
keen deep actually in the playoffs.

Speaker 3 (47:42):
But are they.

Speaker 13 (47:45):
Willing to because that is usually the issue with teams
in the playoffs is they have the debt to go
eight nine. The only team I've ever seen that willing
to go deep with their rotation in the playoffs, and
this is back in the nineties with the Utah Jazz.
Most teams now they tend to go seven or eight.
Most teams actually go seven in the playoffs. And it's

(48:06):
a frustrating thing on my part as a viewer. It's like,
you have this DP team and you you just shrinking
it down to a seven man rotation.

Speaker 3 (48:14):
Yep.

Speaker 2 (48:15):
Yeah, when you got Barnes, Kiln, Johnson, Bryant and Carnett
and and I forgot Harper, they have nine. Yeah, they
have nine guys and the rotation.

Speaker 3 (48:32):
Of the Oklahoma City Thunder is nine. So you got
they match up with match up. That's what I'm saying.

Speaker 1 (48:38):
If you look at this team and you look at
the way that they are set up, and the biggest
thing to me is the youth factor they can run with.

Speaker 3 (48:48):
They can run with. They're all young guys. They're young,
They're gonna and Barnes don't need to play more than
twenty minutes.

Speaker 1 (48:55):
And when he does, he handles his business. Yeah, whenever
he's out there, and he provides the leadership. But you
just heard from Castle and Champagne and what they've been
able to do. They've been able to correct their situation
so quickly. They do it on the fly, and that,
to me is the best part of this team. Like

(49:18):
when you watch the Spurs play, they're having fun. They
don't go out there and try to fill out the situation. No,
they bring the situation.

Speaker 2 (49:26):
It's funny that both of those teams the way they
mirror each other. They operate like a college team, but
they're pro teams and they're all so young that they
all kind of relate to each other, right, I.

Speaker 3 (49:40):
Mean, they get it.

Speaker 2 (49:41):
Caruso is the old guy on on Oka. See him
and Burns are kind of like the same guy. They're
like the defensive keep everybody in line guy.

Speaker 3 (49:52):
Yeah, they get it.

Speaker 1 (49:53):
They get it, and it's time for us to get
it because coming up next and Parker Coleman breaks down
Texas BASEB, Texas softball, and of course last night Spurs
victory over the Suns. Right here on the Morning Kickoff
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone and.

Speaker 3 (50:09):
Always free on the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 1 (50:11):
Welcome back to the morning Kickoff right here on Sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.

Speaker 3 (50:17):
It is Friday.

Speaker 1 (50:19):
We got jobs, but it's time for us to talk
to our good friend and Parker Coleman of cavew as
we get ready for a busy, busy weekend.

Speaker 3 (50:31):
First and foremost, how are you doing this morning?

Speaker 16 (50:35):
Good guys, I'm hoping. Okay, give me.

Speaker 2 (50:39):
Yay.

Speaker 16 (50:40):
Every week.

Speaker 17 (50:41):
Every week, I don't change anything, but my night has
not been working, so I'm really happy that's working.

Speaker 16 (50:50):
Yeah, I don't even know what you ask me anymore.

Speaker 1 (50:53):
We were just excited at Yeah, we were waiting to
see what was gonna happen before we dove all the
way in. But I want to talk about this because
you got a chance to be with coach Slasnagel and
the team yesterday as they get ready to host Michigan
State tonight. First pitch, six point thirty at the Dish.
It's going to be beautiful weather, a beautiful time. But

(51:13):
one of the things that he was able to talk
about was the pitching staff and how Max Wiener, the
pitching coach, has been able to connect with all of
these great pitchers.

Speaker 16 (51:26):
Yeah, hearts. You hit on it right there.

Speaker 17 (51:28):
That was probably my favorite thing that I learned yesterday
when we talked to coach loss. I don't know how
we got on the subject of Max Weener, but if
you just look at him in the dugout, guys having
a great time.

Speaker 16 (51:39):
I mean, he looks young.

Speaker 17 (51:40):
So he looks like a college guy, but he looks
like he's having so much fun, like he's actually on
the team, not coaching the team. I encourage fans to
truly pay attention to him, and I feel like that
is just the epitome of the kind of coach he is.
And kind of reiterated that he feels like he is
kind of me one of the players, but also elevated

(52:00):
in the way that like he he is like a therapist,
and even if you walk into his office, it's going
to feel like you're going into a therapy session. He
kind of has the office tricked out. We had some
in incinse. We have scented candles, like it's a vibe
in there, and Saw says, you know, that's kind of
what pitchers need.

Speaker 16 (52:19):
He kind of equated them to kickers, to football kickers.
You know, you kind of need somebody.

Speaker 17 (52:25):
Those guys at least need somebody that you can go
to invent and slots.

Speaker 16 (52:30):
I appreciate this about him. He's self aware.

Speaker 17 (52:32):
He knows that he writes the lineup card and he's
the one side of the scholarship. Guys aren't going to
be as honest and as candid with him as they
would with somebody else, and moxicants to be that guy.

Speaker 2 (52:45):
MS Parker, You we talk about the pitch, and we
talk about how well Textas has done hitting the ball.
I want to turn into a small version of coach
slots the defensive side, Like who's been showing out on
the defensive side once the pitchers make the pitch, if

(53:09):
somebody does get lucky enough to get a hit off Texas,
who's been the one that's been making the defensive plays
the most.

Speaker 16 (53:18):
I don't know if you could say the most.

Speaker 17 (53:20):
I've been the most impressed, probably with a Rod at shortstop.
I feel like there were a lot of questions with
who is going to take over jaln Flores his position
because he was such a stud there, and you know,
you had tim Obisara coming in, so there's a little
bit of a competition there. Obviously, a Rod went out
lost some weight this season, so he's moving a little

(53:41):
bit faster, and I mean it's only been what four
games now, I guess if you count that midweek, but
I just thought he looked really natural in that position
much more natural than a guy I maybe he would
have expected who played pretty much all over the infield
in even in the outfield last year.

Speaker 1 (53:57):
Yeah, I was impressed with what I've seen from him
as somebody that played at shortstop.

Speaker 3 (54:01):
I know what the position.

Speaker 1 (54:03):
Looks like, and the way that he moves is the
way that you expect the player like that and his
caliber to be able to do that. One of the
other players that we have had an opportunity to talk about,
obviously is Ethan Mendoza. Him at the top of that
lineup I saw, you know, we've talked about his weight game,
the strength that he's put on, and it's good weight.

Speaker 3 (54:26):
He feels comfortable at that playing weight.

Speaker 1 (54:28):
But he also is the guy at the top of
that lineup that gets everything going for a rod for
Aiden Robbins and now Carson Tiny talk about what you've
learned about him along the way as well.

Speaker 17 (54:41):
Yeah, I mean, I don't think that you can emphasize
the weight gain enough. Mendoza isn't a really big guy,
and now with that weight game, we've seen a lot
more power from him. He homeward in the first two
games last weekend. But he's just one of those reliable,
consistent hitters who you know is going to get on base,
and that's exactly what you want at the top of

(55:03):
your lineup.

Speaker 16 (55:03):
That's exactly what you want to see get the most
at bats.

Speaker 17 (55:07):
And then you mean, gosh, like, once you get through
Ethan Mendoza, I feel bad.

Speaker 16 (55:12):
For the pictures that have to face the top of
the lineup.

Speaker 17 (55:14):
You go Ethan Mendoza, then you got to deal with
a rod and then you got Aiden Robbins, Carson Tini,
it is it's a Gauntland and then he moved down
the lineup. You got to deal with a guy like
Anthony Pack towards the ends like it's it's really tough.
But to your point, Ethan Mendoza just consistent, reliable hitter.

Speaker 16 (55:31):
That's why you want him at the top.

Speaker 1 (55:33):
Yeah, he is one of those dudes in the lineup
that you can do a lot with. Once he gets
on you can run the bases, you can do some
hit and runs. And then even when he comes back up,
he's a great situational player and his defense is getting
better too. Let's go to the other side, Let's go
to basketball. The men's basketball team continues to find a

(55:54):
way to get it done. We've seen the ups and
the downs. You've been in there and some of those
press conferences where coach Miller just kind of lets you
know exactly where he is in his mind. But this
team has decided that they want to go out there
and fight, and that's what we've seen. And he also
mentioned I know we talk a lot about Dalan Swaying,

(56:15):
but he's been given a lot of love to Tremon
Mark and what he's been able to do.

Speaker 17 (56:21):
Yeah, I feel like you've seen Tramon Mark come alive.
And he's a guy that can be a little streaky.
But I mean Texas five game win streak right now, Yes,
it is probably the softest part of their schedule. The
real test now is going to be can you extended
to six? Can you send it to seven? Because now
is when it really gets it's hard. You got Georgia

(56:43):
on Saturday, You're playing away at Georgia. Then you welcome
oh yeah, the defending national champs Florida, and then you
got to face Texas A and m Arkansas.

Speaker 16 (56:52):
I think you round out with.

Speaker 17 (56:53):
Ou like it's it's gonna be a tough stretch to
end the season. But what I thought was interesting on
Tuesday night after they won against LSU. You know, everybody's like, oh,
five game win street, coach, what's what's going on. You're not,
you know, talking so much smack about your team in
the postgame press or anymore.

Speaker 16 (57:12):
What's what's changed?

Speaker 17 (57:14):
And yes, their defense has gotten better, But he was
also like, I think that that's a product of just
being together longer. This is just the same of college
basketball now teams don't you know, it's going to be
a completely new team every single season.

Speaker 16 (57:30):
And he didn't have a ton of time with these guys.

Speaker 17 (57:33):
I feel like we really saw that at the beginning
this season, them still getting acclimated to each other.

Speaker 16 (57:37):
How we get to see the payoff of that of like, okay,
you have.

Speaker 17 (57:40):
And in almost an entire season under your belt, things
are starting to kind of just click a little bit
more and click with with coach Miller too, because again
he's brand new.

Speaker 16 (57:51):
These guys don't know.

Speaker 17 (57:52):
Some of them, you know who came with them, know
his system, but the majority of them don't.

Speaker 2 (57:58):
Ap It was at the beginning of the fourth period
there was a Kendal Weaver sighting. Again I don't know
if you saw it, but that was a play where
the ball got moved around. They threw an inside pass
to one of the centers and Kendall took off and

(58:19):
jumped and the ball hit the back of his hand
to deflect the ball and Texas got the turnover. His
hand was at least a foot above the rim. Like,
I want to see what his highlight reel is going
to look like at the end of the season, because
he's done some things that they're not going to show

(58:42):
up in the statue. And it is right now, Kenda
would probably be the MVP of hustle plays and you know,
just kind of off the reels type of plays, don't.

Speaker 16 (58:57):
You think, Yeah, absolutely, I actually did not. I was
not there, so it did not see that playing.

Speaker 17 (59:02):
That makes me mad because I remember the last one
you and I talked about where he just like let.

Speaker 16 (59:08):
The up to the room.

Speaker 17 (59:09):
Yet he is scary athletic, and you're right, he's not
the kind of guy.

Speaker 16 (59:13):
That's going to light up the statu sheet. He's not.

Speaker 17 (59:16):
But he is a difference maker. He's the one who
at the end of the game coach the role. They say, yeah,
it doesn't show in the stats, but like he he
was the difference tonight. And I feel like we saw
that a lot last season too, when we heard it
a lot from.

Speaker 16 (59:33):
Uh from Texas's old head coach.

Speaker 17 (59:36):
And then even when Miller was coming around, it was
like he he is a guy that you have to get.
He is a he is a glue guy. And I
think it's maybe not because of plays like that, that athleticism,
but I.

Speaker 16 (59:48):
Think that athleticism helps.

Speaker 17 (59:49):
And I think that hustle that he has that you
can see through athletic plays like that.

Speaker 16 (59:52):
I mean, that's that makes all the difference.

Speaker 2 (59:54):
They'll play for one of three teams next season in NBA,
and that's the spur.

Speaker 3 (01:00:01):
He'll play for Detroit or he'll play for the Knicks.

Speaker 2 (01:00:04):
They look for guys that hustle, that that grind, that
want to sometimes they want to fight you.

Speaker 3 (01:00:10):
I don't. I've not seen Kendall get to the point.

Speaker 2 (01:00:12):
Where he wanted to throw hands with anybody, but somebody's
explosive as him.

Speaker 3 (01:00:17):
You don't want to get hit by a guy like AP.

Speaker 1 (01:00:22):
I wanted to ask you this too before we let
you go. Texas women's basketball gets another big victory. Conversation
was a little bit different after the game, coming from
Vic Schaeffer. He had mentioned it earlier in the week.
Some teams respond differently, and I kept saying, this team
is good. They just had a bad game. We got

(01:00:44):
to understand who they are. They went and handled their business,
but the road doesn't get any easier for them. What
are your thoughts on this Texas women's basketball team.

Speaker 17 (01:00:54):
Yeah, it's been such an interesting season because they are
so talented, and yet when they lose, we hear things
like they don't have heart and they are soft, and
when you watch them, I don't know it. It's tough.
And coach Schaeffer said earlier this week that he doesn't
think that if you know, he could go back in time,
I don't know if he would have said quite those things. Again,

(01:01:16):
then he's just looking out for the best interests of
the team. And you say those things a fire team up.
It doesn't fire everybody up. And I think he kind
of learned that. But I mean, whether you regret that
or not, Like the past two games have showed that
in some ways it did kind of work.

Speaker 16 (01:01:33):
This team has responded.

Speaker 17 (01:01:34):
You get that big win over Tennessee earlier this week.
Last night, you just absolutely obliterated Arkansas and too I
think the best thing about it was is they're three pointers.

Speaker 16 (01:01:47):
Texas is a team that does not shoot threes.

Speaker 17 (01:01:50):
Victims not like to talk about that, but they win
tim for twenty eight behind the arc, So huge win
for them, and they kind of need to keep it going.
They'll play Mississippi State on Sunday, but you got to
close out the regular season strong because you're kind of
right now they're in a position where they could lock
up that fourth number one seat for NCAA play.

Speaker 1 (01:02:12):
Yeah, and that's an important part of making sure that
you get a home seating and being able to kind
of craft your way through the tournament as this time
is starting to take place.

Speaker 3 (01:02:25):
As always, we want to thank you.

Speaker 1 (01:02:27):
For taking the time this morning, and folks, every Wednesday,
Ap and I are together on CAVUW we started our
new Hardballs segment about baseball and it's been fun and
I always look forward to it. But thank you for
taking the time today.

Speaker 16 (01:02:44):
Yeah, thank you, guys. I'll see you on Wednesday.

Speaker 1 (01:02:46):
Herd all right, I'll see you Wednesday. There she goes
and Parker Coleman of CAVU. Coming up next, we have
our guy Mark Henry bringing you his world's Strongest Tech
right here on the morning kickoff on Sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred of Zone and always free.

Speaker 3 (01:03:01):
On the iHeartRadio app. You heard them.

Speaker 1 (01:03:03):
WWE Hall of Famer World's Strongest Man tells you that's
what he do and right now he is gonna do
what it do.

Speaker 3 (01:03:11):
W W Hall of Fame of World's Strongest Man.

Speaker 1 (01:03:13):
Dee Park Henry brings you his World's Strongest take.

Speaker 3 (01:03:17):
Take it away a big fellow. Yes, you know what time?
And then what time is it?

Speaker 2 (01:03:21):
If time for the World's Strongest Take by the World's
Strongest Man Marcus. Back then they didn't know me. Now
I'm hot, They're all on me.

Speaker 3 (01:03:34):
You know.

Speaker 2 (01:03:36):
Well, here we are again, guys, World's Strongest tape. I
don't know how to feel about this because my anxiety
for rule changes and so forth is real high because

(01:03:57):
I always think about the history of the league and
what league had to go through to.

Speaker 3 (01:04:01):
Get to where it is now and changing things.

Speaker 2 (01:04:06):
It kind of messes with the history because the guys
before didn't have these options. The NBA, the league officers
had conversations with all the shareholders and with all the
Board of Governors and the Competition Committee and the general
managers and coaches about putting in some anti tanking rules

(01:04:34):
in the NBA for next season, including starting with potential
concepts for changing how you get your draft picks and
what you could do with them. Commission out Adam Silver
informed everyone that he plans to make anti tank and

(01:04:56):
rule changes for next season.

Speaker 3 (01:04:58):
And he said it for fully and you get to
that point.

Speaker 2 (01:05:04):
And he also find the Utah Jazz a half a
million dollars for what he considered a blatant disrespect of
the rules and tanking, and Indiana Pacers one hundred thousand
dollars for the same for not playing players that were

(01:05:25):
healthy laid in games. And there's other teams right now
that are under the microscope that they're saying that those
teams will likely be fined in the up and coming days.
Some of the rule changes that they're thinking about is

(01:05:47):
even if you win a lottery pick, you get one
of these top fifteen sixteen picks, they're gonna roll you down.
They're gonna take away your ability to get that pick
in the top fifteen sixteen picks because you tank. You
do not want to be on his anti tanking list.

(01:06:09):
He's gonna bump you down.

Speaker 3 (01:06:11):
Ten spots.

Speaker 2 (01:06:14):
Holy cow, they're no longer teams will allowed to be
to pick in the top four in consecutive years. I
think the one that's gonna hurt the most is if
you actually make it to a play the playoffs and

(01:06:34):
you play in a championship conference final.

Speaker 3 (01:06:38):
You lose your pick if you're on that list.

Speaker 2 (01:06:44):
So I suggest if you are a team in the
NBA and you're at the bottom right now, you're one
of the top ten worst teams in the league, you
get on your horse and you start playing because you
do not want to be on this list. Because if
you get a top ten pick and they say no,
we're gonna bump you down to twenty, or if you're

(01:07:06):
seven and now you get bumped down to twenty one,
you're gonna be upset with yourself.

Speaker 3 (01:07:18):
Now, this year, it's a deep draft.

Speaker 2 (01:07:22):
You got seventeen eighteen guys that can really come in
and help your franchise. Texas has one of those guys
on their team. But my take is this hard. I
think the tanking is gonna stop right now because you've
got the commissioner mad and what he says things and

(01:07:42):
they listed as him speaking forcefully to all the powers
that be, the owners.

Speaker 3 (01:07:48):
The owners are not used to getting talked to like this.

Speaker 2 (01:07:51):
These are billionairess multi billionaires, and when you tell them, look,
I don't care about where you stand. If you get
on my list, you're gonna lose your draft pick or
we're gonna push it down.

Speaker 3 (01:08:07):
What say you? I agree with it.

Speaker 1 (01:08:08):
I mean, I think this is that time where I
think players need to be playing. I think players should
be playing. You getting paid a lot of money, a
lot of money, So go to work, go do your thing.
That's what you get paid to do. I don't feel
like it today. What where's that at? Where's that load management?

(01:08:30):
That thing is the worst thing that you could ever
have created, because it makes no sense. You know what
it is? Every game you don't play, start taking money.
You want a day off without pay, that's what you get.
And let's see that. Put that in the rule book.
But you know what's gonna happen to the collective bargaining agreement?

Speaker 3 (01:08:52):
That players are unfair? No way, no how, that's my boy.

Speaker 1 (01:08:59):
Rob Parker will say, But you gotta understand, and I
agree with you. I think that you not playing in
the game that you're supposed to be playing in is
the worst thing that you can.

Speaker 3 (01:09:09):
Do because fans lose. Man.

Speaker 1 (01:09:11):
Just think last night, all the people that went to
the Moody last night.

Speaker 2 (01:09:14):
If Winby wasn't playing, it would have been a waste.

Speaker 1 (01:09:20):
Everybody doesn't have that type of disposable income anymore to
go to a people save up for that.

Speaker 3 (01:09:27):
They didn't drive to.

Speaker 1 (01:09:28):
San Antonio all year long because they wanted to see
Winby here and I needed some time off.

Speaker 3 (01:09:35):
No, no, no, you don't, No, you don't. It ain't
that hard.

Speaker 1 (01:09:39):
Hey, monitor your minutes, not taking yourself out of the
game completely. Peterson, when we come back, When we come back,
we'll preview all the things that are happening this weekend.
And I gotta tell you two lifetime Longhorns will be
at a special.

Speaker 3 (01:09:56):
Place starting today.

Speaker 1 (01:09:58):
Gotta go check them out right here on the morning

SEC Network, but all the action can be heard on
ninety eight point one KVET and of course AM thirteen
hundred The Zone with the voice of Texas Athletics, our
guy Craig Way.

Speaker 3 (01:10:36):
That will be tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (01:10:38):
Starting tonight, we have Texas Baseball six point thirty, First
pitch six thirty two, but you can hear it all
starting at six point fifteen with Texas Baseball pregame show
as they will take on Michigan State. First pitch tonight
six thirty. Texas Baseball plays tomorrow at two o'clock and
then on Sunday they are at noon. We also got

(01:11:02):
Texas Women's basketball this weekend as they get ready to
take on Mississippi State.

Speaker 3 (01:11:09):
It's a home game.

Speaker 1 (01:11:11):
There's a lot that is happening that will be at
one o'clock. You only got a couple home games left
for the Texas women. To get out there to this
Sunday and check them out as they take on Mississippi State. Also,
make your plans today to go over to the new
HB over there by Hancock. They've upgraded, they made some adjustments,

(01:11:34):
and they've done some new things over there and go
check out Longhorn legend Kwan Cosby. He will be there
from four thirty to six thirty, brought to you by
bud Light and Brown Distributing. And on Saturday that Jamal
Charles will be there doing the exact same thing.

Speaker 3 (01:11:52):
Sign up autographs.

Speaker 1 (01:11:54):
He'll be there from one to three and it is
brought to you from by bud Life in Brown Distributing
and Mark. There's a special event that is going on
this weekend. Our guy, Derek Johnson's Defend the Dream Foundation
is having his Celebrity Waiter Night at the Four Seasons.

(01:12:15):
The event is sold out for February the twenty second.
It has already been sold out, but you can go
to Derek Johnsonfoundation dot org for all the information and
check it out. In one of the celebrity waiters, it's
gonna be Mark Henry.

Speaker 3 (01:12:31):
That's right.

Speaker 2 (01:12:31):
I'm gonna have an apron on and a Trey handing
out drinks and there's gonna be some really important and
special longhornt athletes, former Longhorns and as well as local
celebrities and man just coach Sargan is gonna be there
and it's gonna be hosting Brown.

Speaker 1 (01:12:52):
It's gonna be hosted by our guy, said Golden of
the Austin American Statesman. He will be the host of
it all, but obviously dealing with Derek Johnson and his foundation,
We've done a lot with them. Derek and I have
done a women's clinic before as well. Special guests go
all the way from Aaron Williams, TJ Forod Kwon Cosby,

(01:13:15):
Michael Huff Griffin, Vince Young v is supposed to be there,
Brooks Keishnick Drew Stubbs, Reggie Freeman, Sylvin Young, bj Johnson,
and of course uh CDC Mac Brown, de Los Dodds,
John Bianco is gonna be there. And our guy Norman Watkins.
You know Norman has been on the show with us
quite a bit and he has a special relationship with

(01:13:38):
Derek Johnson. There's gonna be some celebrity chefs, my man
John Carver. He's done an unbelievable job with all of
his restaurants here in town. So it's gonna be a
very special special event for a great cause with Derek
Johnson's Defend the Dream Foundation and.

Speaker 2 (01:13:56):
The whole organization is about UH empower kids through literacy
and how they go in and they rebuild libraries so
kids can be able to have books and new books,
not just you know, run down books, but like brand
new books.

Speaker 3 (01:14:13):
So I love the fact that he's able to do that.
He's got a bunch of sponsors that have done a
really good job.

Speaker 1 (01:14:18):
And if you want to be a part of it,
you're not gonna be able to get in, but you
can make donations, right and you can also help with
the foundation and try to build more for his foundation.

Speaker 3 (01:14:31):
He's done an unbelievable job with that great human.

Speaker 1 (01:14:35):
As we've talked about before, And you start to look
at all the things that are happening this weekend, Texas
basketball has to be one of the biggest stories. And
I'm talking about Texas basketball the men because now they're
they're about to go through a tough, tough stretch. You know,
they went through they won five straight and now it's

(01:14:57):
an opportunity.

Speaker 3 (01:14:58):
Can you get to six? Can you get to say
and how long can you make this go?

Speaker 1 (01:15:02):
And I think that this team is playing basketball and
they're headed in the right direction.

Speaker 2 (01:15:07):
They're headed in the right direction, and I think they
also have got to the point where they know each other,
like the nuance of not playing together and they struggle
with the files, still have some struggles. But if they're
able to fix it hard to these next five games

(01:15:30):
and to be able to go into the playoffs and
limit the files and play team ball, they have enough
talent to make a run. And I'm just praying that
they all realize where they are and how hard it
is to get where they are ye and don't waste
it now.

Speaker 1 (01:15:49):
Now they only have two home games left Wednesday at
