Speaker 1 (00:05):
Hi. Uh. This week will not be a full episode
because it's Thanksgiving, and I just want to talk a
little bit about how Thanksgiving is definitely different this year.
People are obviously more insular, less social, but I think
people are craving a little bit of that love and
connectivity and making it their own. So thank you so

(00:29):
much for staying with me. This has been an incredible
experience that's been polarizing. There has been a lot of
controversial back and forth about guests of mine and things
said on here opinions. So keep it coming, uh. I
wonder what you're all doing for Thanksgiving. I have been
talking to bring my daughter about it, and she loves animals,

(00:52):
She really really loves animals. And she has told me
I forgot the number of turkeys that are slaughtered, and
she said millions, millions of turkeys. And I'm not mad
at turkey per se, and I don't love turkey. I
find that at the table, it's usually the thing that
people care the least about. I mean, there are some
grandfathers that really love the big drumstick, or people like

(01:13):
to find the wishbone, or I like the crispy skin,
et cetera. But By and large. It's the frying of
the turkey, the braising of the turkey, that the turd
duck in, the double stuffing the turkey, the stuffing the
turkey with a bird, with a dog, with a pig
with a stuffing, and do you stuff inside the turkey
or does that give you salmonella? Do you stuff after?
Is your stuffing rice? Is it corn bread? Is it

(01:34):
just bread crumbs? Is it day old bread? I mean
a lot of sort of controversy. Do you use the
cranberry in the in the can or do you hold
cranberry it um. So we have been talking for a
long time about making enchiladas together, just brind and I
just making enchiladas, our last thing with stuffed shells. And
I think we'll go to my friend's house who have

(01:55):
had the best family has been very careful and it's
just going to be them and their dogs. And they
say that we can bring Biggie and Smalls, and we're
talking about stopping over there. Uh, but we also were
talking about just bring myself Biggie Smalls, saying home and
making enchiladas. And truth be told, in the past, I
have on occasion stay at home by myself on Thanksgiving.

(02:17):
I never will admit it to anyone because then everybody
sort of it's the way that people were for my
fiftieth birthday, said that I don't a family and I'm alone,
and she's gonna feel sad and upset and depressed. The
truth is it's a day that you sort of reflect.
It's a calm day. Nothing's open. Uh. Sometimes it's nice
to just be. And you know, it hasn't just be

(02:39):
that sounds like a good name for a podcast. It
hasn't been meaningful when I've done that, except that it's
been sort of reflective and meditative. And so whatever Thanksgiving
is for you is right. It is actually just a day.
I mean, it's good to be thankful. It's great to
be thankful all the time. It's nice to connect with
other people. Although it may be largely by zoom, but

(03:02):
I don't think there should be a lot of pressure
attached to it. I think it should be to make
it meaningful. I remember one year I was really sad
when it was in the throes of some negativity surrounding
my divorce, and it was warm out and I just
walked straight into the ocean in my clothes in the
Hampton's I just needed to sort of cleanse myself on
Thanksgiving Day. I wanted to make it meaningful. I just

(03:23):
felt like I just needed to sort of refresh and
turn the page. And I think that whatever it is,
it will be good. It is a time that you
think about what we have, what other people don't have.
I definitely will think about my relief work, and there's
been so much tragedy and disaster. We'll think about politics,

(03:44):
I bet I'll think about I will think about lack
of family and lack of relationship. And one thing I
will say that friends of mine have thought is interesting
is the pressure of sort of if you're not if
you're not Mary Aid. I have a friend who, by
the way, won't be with her own husband on Thanksgiving
because her dad is very ill and in Europe and

(04:06):
she had to go there. So a lot of you know,
there will be a lot of dividing and sort of
just a different dynamic in where people need to be
regarding the pandemic and logistics and not putting other people
at risk. But in addition, people who are single and
don't have someone or or maybe in that gray area.

(04:29):
It's just not the year that you feel you could
feel bad about yourself because you're not with someone at Thanksgiving,
because you could even be in a good relationship, but
for whatever reason, everyone has to stay separate. I have
a friend that I won't see for the whole week
because she won't put her parents at risk and she's
in quarantine before. So it's sort of comforting in that
way to just say it's not usual year to practice

(04:51):
self care and try to rest and do the best
you can, but not to put any usual expectations on
this holiday, and maybe as a result of that will
all learn for future Thanksgivings. So I wish you love
and health and happiness and success and laughter, and this
too shall pass, and use it as a time of

(05:12):
reflection and a time to be grateful and just think
about the meaning of Thanksgiving, whatever that is for you.
So happy Thanksgiving to you, and I'll be back next week.
So thank you for supporting us.
