כנראה שאת המשפט המפורסם ביותר בתולדות המדינה אמר ראש הממשלה דוד בן גוריון כבר ברגעיה הראשונים. אין ילד בישראל שלא מכיר בעל פה, אפילו עם קולו הצפצפני-משהו של בן גוריון את המילים: 'אנו מכריזים בזאת על הקמת מדינה יהודית בארץ ישראל, היא מדינת ישראל', שהודיעו לעולם על הקמתה של מדינה חדשה.
אבל מסתבר שבדיוק כמו שהוא מפורסם, כך הוא גם רווי מחלוקות על פרשנותו, ובמיוחד המילים 'מדינה יהודית'. הוויכוח על זהותה היהודית נמשך כבר 75 שנה, ואם נהיה כנים אף יותר מזה, אל ראשית ימי התנועה הציונית. תמיד היה מדובר בגלים עולים ויורדים, אך נדמה שבחודשים האחרונים מדובר בשיאים חדשים אליהם מגיע הוויכוח הזה. אז הפעם, רגע לפני יום העצמאות ה-75 למדינת ישראל, ננסה לצעוד בתוך הוויכוח שקורע את החברה הישראלית, בעזרת ד"ר רוני קמפינסקי, דיקן אקדמאי וראש חוג אזרחות במכללת אפרתה.
